an icon of sports architecture in Baku

The architecture of Baku never ceases to amaze. You’ll be convinced of this yourself after a visit to Baku’s Olympic Stadium  – the country’s most unusual and largest sports construction.

Baku Olympic Stadium

  • About Baku Olympic Stadium

The Baku Olympic Stadium, completed in 2015, stands out even among the many unique examples of modern architecture in Baku. Everything about it is unusual, from the ring-shaped form and the original interior to the retractable roof and the colourful and dynamic lighting in the evening. The enormous complex over 60 metres high – higher than a 20-floor apartment building! – and with an area of 120,000m2 can accommodate almost 70,000 spectators. In 2017 at the World Stadium Congress it won the “best new stadium in the world” award.

Already some very prestigious international sporting events have been held here: the first ever European Games, the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games, as well as qualifiers for the UEFA European Football Championship and FIFA World Cup, and Nations League matches. The spectacular stadium is included on UEFA’s list of elite sports venues and this summer will stage four matches of the EURO 2020 European Football Championship .

At the complex you can relax and have a great time, be it doing sport in the fitness centre or martial arts club, dining with friends in the fan-cafe, shopping or strolling in the beautiful park along the shore of Boyukshor lake next to the stadium. Conferences, seminars, concerts, corporate events and even weddings also take place here.

To fully explore this architectural marvel and unique multisport complex you can take a tour, for which there are several options that vary in length and complexit.

While a relative newcomer to the world of hosting international sporting events, Baku has quickly established itself as a popular host city with a lot to offer.

The Flame Towers of Baku

Article body

Baku is getting ready to serve as one of the 12 host cities for EURO 2020. The general secretary of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA), Elkhan Mammadov, describes the association’s plans for the EURO, why Baku is a great destination for football fans, and the legacy that is being built.

“We built a strategy so that Baku would become a sporting hub in the future, and slowly we are getting there. Baku will become a sporting hub,” he says, recognising the commitment shown by the association and local stakeholders, who are already driving to make the EURO a success in Baku.

So, what attracted the City of Winds – as Baku is known because of the sweeping gusts from the Caspian Sea – to becoming a EURO host? The city’s pedigree in staging major events is growing, and shaping football in Azerbaijan for years to come is the AFFA’s motivation.

“The legacy will be having more people to play football, to grow the game,” Mammadov says. “Football is a sport, a sport that will never stop growing. Moreover, in the last few years, its popularity has increased remarkably. Yes, there are other sports as well, and interest in them has also increased. However, football has always been the most popular sport of them all.

“For us, it is important to maintain the level of interest in football in the country and in the region as well. The legacy for us will be more kids playing football, more kids going outside and leaving their computers behind and playing football, therefore, encouraging a healthier lifestyle and building a healthier nation.”

In perfect harmony The largest city on the coast of the Caspian Sea, Baku is the lowest-lying capital in the world, at 28 metres below sea level. Baku is also home to the Baku Olympic Stadium, which will host three group matches plus a quarter-final at EURO 2020.

A city that has benefitted from rapid expansion in recent years, Baku also boasts a rich historical heritage, including Icheri Sheher, the old town, home to various cultural sites and the grand 15th-century Shirvanshahs Palace. Keen to showcase the impressive capital, Mammadov is looking forward to welcoming fans from across Europe, and beyond.

”Baku has the advantage of being a city of harmony, with both a historic part which is very interesting and attractive for sightseeing, and also a modern part with different art exhibitions as well as different modern attractions,” he says. “Moreover, Baku is a sporting hub, with different sporting activities. So, tourists can enjoy three major sides of the city during their stay in Baku. All these sites are very close to each other, some even within walking distance.

An unmissable party In addition to promoting regional engagement and supporting fan mobility, Mammadov wants to see EURO 2020 leave a profound and lasting impact on the people of Baku. “For 2020, we are building a story of the EURO in general in Baku, and in neighbouring countries,” Mammadov adds. “Because we want the whole region to feel the thrill of EURO 2020. There will be different exciting activities organised in the city and we are going to extend the duration of the fan zone experience, so people can come and enjoy themselves there, and then go to the matches to support their teams.”

Mammadov also explains how the buzz of the EURO will land in Baku long before the matches begin. “We want to build the fan zones before the event starts. So, maybe 30 days before the event, the fan zones will already be open. Volunteers, fans and tourists will be able to come and feel part of the event, including tourists who are not there for the matches. This is very important. And I think this will create a kind of competition among the fans as well because the 12 host cities will have their own fans.

“Prior to the event, we are planning to have different EURO-related competitions and there will be different sporting activities, not only football. Additional entertainment programmes will be arranged closer to the date. We are planning to have a calendar of events to promote EURO 2020 and the other host cities and, of course, to connect with the fans in the other 11 cities.”

Mammadov’s message to fans is: “Simply enjoy the EURO as much as possible. The event will last 30 days. Take the opportunity to take 30 days off, take a holiday and enjoy all 12 host cities.”

Baku Situated on the shores of the Caspian Sea, Baku is the most easterly of the EURO 2020 host cities and will leave a striking impression when it welcomes the EURO for the first time. Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan, also known as the Land of Fire, and the natural gas fires burning on the hillside of the nearby Yanar Dag mountain are certainly a sight to behold. The Flame Towers skyscrapers in the city centre echo this natural phenomenon, lending a modern face to an ancient city. New too is the Baku Olympic Stadium that opened in 2015, has already staged Qarabağ FK’s UEFA Champions League group matches and the UEFA Europa League final this season.

Arsenal’s Mkhitaryan omission from Europa League Baku final highlights football’s global politics at its most fragile

When English Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal meet in UEFA’s Europa League final on May 29, one of the latter’s big name players will not be with his team. Henrikh Mkhitaryan won’t be playing in the match – one of the most important games of the season for Arsenal.

The reason? The game is being played at the Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan. Mkhitaryan is an Armenian – and Armenia and Azerbaijan have an enduringly fractious relationship , dating back to the fall of the Russian empire in 1917. Currently, there are no diplomatic relations between them, principally because of a conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory inside Azerbaijan’s current borders. Arsenal said, in a statement:

We have thoroughly explored all the options for Micki to be part of the squad but after discussing this with Micki and his family we have collectively agreed he will not be in our travelling party. We have written to UEFA expressing our deep concerns about this situation. Micki has been a key player in our run to the final so this is a big loss for us from a team perspective.

Under normal circumstances, Mkhitaryan wouldn’t be allowed into Azerbaijan, though Azerbaijan’s UK ambassador has insisted that he is welcome (and would be safe) providing he confines himself simply to playing football. The Armenian international and his club seemingly think otherwise.

We’ve been here before – earlier in the season Mkhitaryan didn’t travel to play against Qarabag , an Azerbaijani team, in a previous round of the Europa League. Furthermore, we know that clubs and national associations are often mindful of the consequences that international conflicts between countries can have on football.

Already this year we have seen issues with Qatar qualifying to play in the AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, a country with which it doesn’t have diplomatic relations. Matches involving Israel or Israeli players frequently prove difficult – for instance, in 2006, Yossi Benayoun and Yaniv Katan were left out of a traininng trip to Dubai by their club West Ham. There have been issues in the UK, too, including when Argentinian Osvaldo Ardiles needed to move on loan from Tottenham Hotspur to Paris Saint Germain following the outbreak of the Falklands War in May 1982.

Level playing field?

UEFA itself is not blind to the sometimes highly charged, political nature of the sport. Indeed, during draws for both international and club matches, European football’s governing body keeps some countries apart given the state of relations between them. As such, Azerbaijani and Armenian teams don’t face one another in competition nor do, for example, Ukraine and Russia .

Yet there’s something different about Mkhitaryan’s case, not least because he can hardly be characterised as a mainstay of the Arsenal team following his big money move from Manchester United early in 2018. Rather, UEFA’s selection of Baku to host a game of this nature has been controversial from the outset, most recently because of the unusually small number of tickets – 6,000 per team – allocated to Arsenal and Chelsea. This is despite the city’s National Stadium having a capacity of 68,000.

One apparent reason for this is that Baku’s airport is unable to handle large volumes of people , an explanation that has provoked derision from a mass of London fans keen to attend the game. It doesn’t help that Azerbaijan is not easy to get to from Britain – it’s a 6,000 mile round trip that is costly and time-consuming to undertake. Even before Mkhitaryan’s withdrawal from the match, many had been calling for it to be played elsewhere.

Several groups, including Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders , have long been highlighting the actions of government in Baku. Azerbaijan is frequently accused of denying press freedoms, violating human rights, and using sport as a means through which to wash the country’s tarnished image and reputation. The country is also scandal riven, most notably the Laundromat money laundering scam which ultimately engulfed the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Winds of change

All of which begs the question as to why UEFA took its decision in 2017 to award Baku the hosting rights to the 2019 Europa League final. In simple terms, over the past decade, the winds of egalitarianism have been blowing through the corridors of the governing body’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Former president Michel Platini was elected on a manifesto that included awarding hosting rights to countries beyond Western Europe.

In many ways, the current president, Aleksander Čeferin , is part of Platini’s legacy: a Slovenian lawyer, he is supposedly committed to ensuring that European football is not controlled by a small number of powerful nations. Unsurprisingly, therefore, it was on his watch that the Azerbaijani capital won the race to stage this season’s Europa League final (even though, just three weeks earlier, the Laundromat scandal had just broken).

At the time, UEFA likely had an eye on the financial benefits of playing matches in a wealthy oil and gas-endowed nation that has been spending big on sport. Not only does Baku have newly built infrastructure capable of successfully delivering mega events, it also has an affluent middle class willing to spend on them. It’s also worth remembering that, in recent years, UEFA has benefited from a lucrative sponsorship deal with SOCAR – the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic.

It seems ironic that Azerbaijan’s growing international prominence and its massive programme of spending on sport are embodied in the “ Baku Process ” – an initiative launched by the country in 2008 with a mission to promote international understanding, dialogue and respect. Whether the country likes it or not, Mkhitaryan, two English clubs and a European football match are now shining a spotlight on the differences between the country’s rhetoric and its reality.
