It's probably safe to say that many of us are saying goodbye to the good old trusty iron and turning to alternatives. Clothes steamers have been a popular choice for de-wrinkling items for years now, and it seems they are filling in the gap here. But how many of us know how to best use these appliances?

Mistakes, such as unintentional dripping, can be made all too easily when it comes to clothes steamers. That’s why we’ve pulled together this step-by-step guide to take you through the best way to use them, whether you’re dealing with an upright or a handheld model. Even if you’re a seasoned steamer, there are tips here to improve the performance of even the best clothes steamers .

1. Choose the right type of steamer

If you’re completely new to using a clothes steamer, you should know that there are two types to choose from: upright and handheld.

Upright clothes steamers are freestanding appliances which feature large bases from which a hose extends to a steamer head, or nozzle. There’s often a built-in hanger attached as well so you can steam items directly from the machine.

The advantages are that these tend to last much longer when compared to handheld steamers and are generally more powerful - but they are expensive and take up space.

Handheld steamers are much more compact, which makes them ideal for smaller jobs or travelling. The entire device, including the water tank, can fit in your hand, so you can simply plug it in and start steaming. Not surprisingly, they are the cheaper option of the two. You can get foldable handheld steamers too, which further reduce the size, but the performance is not as good compared to standard designs, according to GHI testing.

Whichever you choose, bear in mind that a garment steamer won’t offer the same power as a steam iron, as it’s gentler. If you want to replace your iron, a steam generator iron is a better choice.

2. Prepare the room

When you use a clothes steamer, it’s naturally going to release a lot of steam. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to open doors and windows beforehand and make sure the room is well-ventilated. Otherwise, you could be encouraging mould . You could also use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture.

If you’re using a handheld steamer, find a space to hang the items you’re preparing to steam. A bathroom shower rail could work well considering this room is easily vented, and this allows for full access to the item, but the back of a door frame is also suitable. Just make sure the surface on which you’re steaming isn’t liable to water damage, such as exposed wood.

3. Make use of the different settings

Get to know your steamer before you start to use it. Check the available settings and read over the instructions. Some settings may be better suited for certain materials, or the setting could simply refer to continuous or manual steam. It’s best to find out, otherwise you risk damaging your wardrobe. If you need to switch settings during steaming, give the device sufficient time to adjust.

4. Allow time to heat

Don’t start using your steamer until it’s up to temperature. Not only will the performance struggle, it may spit and release droplets, leaving your clothing damp and unsuitable for immediate wear. Wait until the indicator (if your steamer has one) is illuminated or, if not, give it as long as specified in the instructions; steam should start flowing from the head once it’s ready. Our tip is to give it 30 seconds more so any residual water from the previous steaming session is released.

5. Start steaming

Before you start, we recommend holding the steamer at a slight angle as you steam – holding it flush to the material encourages droplets (although stick to flush if your instructions advise it). Use your free hand to hold your garment taut.

Gently brush the steamer in short, steady streaks over the material, working your way from top to bottom. Don’t press hard against the material and don’t hold the steamer too far away from the material, unless you’re steaming very delicate items, such as silk. In these cases, keep the steamer about an inch away to prevent damage.

You can turn delicate materials or those with embellishments inside out to protect the shape or adhesive, if there is some. Work gradually as you steam and don’t spend too long in one spot to prevent damage. Above all, follow your manufacturer’s guidelines for best use. Some will even suggest steaming horizontally to get rid of stubborn wrinkles.

6. Take your time and watch your fingers!

You can burn yourself on the steamer nozzle and even on the clothing if you touch it soon after steaming. Steam items carefully to avoid burnt fingers and wear a heat protection glove, or pad if supplied. You can purchase one if necessary too, such as this Garment Steamer Ironing Glove . Don’t be afraid to do more than one pass as you work, which may be needed for thicker materials that are liable to crease. Once you’ve finished, leave items to cool and dry until ready to wear.

7. Empty the tank

As soon as you finish, drain the water tank completely. We recommend leaving it to dry out if you don’t intend to use the steamer again in the short term. Don’t let the nozzle come into contact with metal objects, or it could be scratched. For handheld steamers, a travel bag may be supplied to keep it protected.

9. Remember to descale

Clothes steamers will require descaling occasionally, otherwise the water will leave traces of limescale in the device, which block and damage the internals. Ironing your clothes can smooth out the wrinkles and make a garment more presentable. Many clothes are made ready to wear, but you will still find some items that need to be ironed. Be careful: if you use the iron improperly, you might burn yourself or ruin the fabric!

How do you use an iron?

• Set the heat level on the iron and wait for it to heat up. Start on the lowest setting and work your way up.
• Run the iron flat across the fabric slowly, smoothing out wrinkles.
• Flip the fabric over and iron the other side.
• Hang the garment up immediately after ironing.

Preparing to Iron

Low Setting: Acetate, rayon, silk, and wool. For rayon and silk , turn the items inside out prior to ironing. For wool items, place a damp cloth between the item and the iron.

Medium Setting : Polyester (slightly damp before ironing)

• Make sure that you use filtered water! This may help you avoid calcium build-up in your iron, which could clog the steam spouts.

Using an Iron

• The heat levels are often listed in relation to a certain type of fabric. For instance, cotton responds well to high heat and steam, but some synthetic fabrics might melt or fuse if they're exposed to such temperatures. Do not use an inappropriate setting!

To finally set things straight (pun intended), we chatted with Sharon Barodawala, iron expert and associate product manager at Rowenta , to help break things down.

What Is the Steam Function Really For?

"The purpose of the steam function is to continuously produce steam when the iron is on," Barodawala tells us. "Steam is the key to ironing because it helps get rid of wrinkles quickly . Steam permeates the fibers of the fabric, and the heat from the iron makes them stay in place." In other words, without steam, don't count on those pants being pressed as well. The most common mistake people make with the steam function? "Not using it!" she says.

How to Use the Steam Function

After filling your iron's water compartment, be sure to give the iron enough time to heat up. "Once the red light is off, the iron should be ready to use," Barodawala says. To prevent water from dribbling out of the soleplate and all over your button-up shirt, avoid rushing the heating-up process. "Let the iron be ready [before using]. At low temperatures, water will drip out." As for when you push the steam burst button, which emits a shot of steam, she suggests this for smoothing out an extremely creased area. "This will help iron it out faster."

Using the Steam Function on Various Fabrics

To avoid ruining your favorite blouse (with too much heat, or not enough moisture before steaming), be sure to double check your clothing labels for best ironing practices. "Most irons [also] have settings for different types of fabrics so be sure to read your labels before you begin ironing." It can also be helpful to begin ironing your load with the most delicate fabrics first and gradually working your way to heavier sweaters and pants; this will allow your iron ample time to adjust to increased heat settings.

Choose somewhere that will allow you to move around your garment easily. Take your steamer or steam generator and a hanger.

You can steam directly onto the item while holding the hanger in your hand. When you want to put it down, simply find a hook on the back of a door or the edge of a cupboard and attach your hanger to it.

TAKE THE RIGHT STEPS

• Place your jacket, blouse, shirt, or trousers on a hanger.
• To keep one hand free, attach the hanger to your Steam Cart or to the hook of your choice.
• First, spray steam a few times away from your clothing to check that the device is working properly and to release any built-up condensation.
• Place your iron a few inches from the fabric and spray the steam towards it. Steam using vertical movements, from top to bottom. Repeat the process until the creases disappear with the magic of the steam. A great result can be achieved in just a few seconds.
• For even faster steaming, use your free hand to keep your item stretched down. Pulling the fabric tight reduces creases and increases steam efficiency.
• Repeat the steps section by section: the back, sleeves, and front of the jacket or shirt as well as on hidden parts such as the inside of trouser legs. The steam passes through the fibers and removes creases from both sides of the fabric.
• If one part is particularly creased, just apply the steam for slightly longer.

Steaming is an elixir of youth for your wardrobe with the added benefit of providing freedom. Keep in mind however that steaming does not replace ironing, which removes creases deeper and gives you a perfect result.
