Frequently Asked Questions

How can i transport cake without a carrier, how do i keep cake fresh without a container, some baking essentials for the holidays, how to choose a cake carrier - buying guide.

In this buying guide, we'll discuss points that you should consider before making a purchase, including the material, the size, and features that a carrier should have.

Decide Between Disposable and Reusable Carriers

If you're selling or gifting your cakes , purchase some disposable carriers! They are usually made of craft paper and don't cost much at all.

If you bake cakes often, a reusable carrier is the most cost-effective in the long run. It's a great option for those who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint as well. Reusable products are usually made of plastic material that is hardy enough to hold the weight of your cake.

You'll also find carriers made of polyester fabric. They're usually designed with an insulated interior to help preserve the quality of your cakes . They're also able to store hot thanks to their ability to retain heat.

When selling desserts, it is safer in terms of food safety and laws to use disposable carriers to avoid contamination between batches. Reusable carriers are a great eco-friendly alternative when bringing treats to an event or party.

I prefer disposable containers because usually when I'm bringing a cake somewhere, it isn't coming back home with me. It makes it easier for everyone to just take a disposable box.

Match the Inner Height and Diameter of the Carrier to Your Cakes

As a rule of thumb, you'll want a carrier with a diameter that is two to three inches bigger than the diameter of your cake . For example, if you tend to bake 10-inch round cakes, you'll want a carrier with a diameter of at least 12 inches.

Don't forget about the height of the carrier! If you tend to bake two or three-layer cakes and decorate them with a variety of items, like nuts, fruits, and figurines, you'll need a cake holder that is tall enough to avoid smudging your decorations .

Usually, one layer of cake is about two inches tall. So if you're making two-layer cake that is roughly four inches tall, make sure that the height of your carrier is about five to six inches so that there is room for decorations.

When it comes to the size of cake containers, it is important to keep in mind the standard size that you make. Getting a large cake carrier is great if you typically make large cakes, but getting a smaller container because you make more 6-inch cakes would be better to keep everything from sliding around in a container that is too large.

I typically buy 10 x 10 x 12-inch boxes ; they fit everything from 4-inch cakes to even 10-inch cakes.

Make Sure the Locking System Provides a Tight Seal

While choosing a carrier, make sure that it has a secure system of locks that provide a tight seal to prevent your cake from falling out during transportation. An airtight seal will also help your cake stay fresh for longer.

If you choose a reusable plastic container, pick one with multiple side latches to help secure the lid to the base. Multiple latches will also prevent air from getting inside the container and drying out your cake.

You'll also find products that boast a twist-to-seal lid. Compared to latches, these don't seal as tightly and might only keep your cake fresh for a couple of hours.

Some products feature a double-lock system that combines a locking lid and side latches to keep your carrier secure and airtight. This system is much more secure than a twist-to-seal lid but isn't necessarily better than a locking system that only uses side latches.

For a cake carrier made from polyester fabric, make sure it has two zippers : one upper and one lower. A double zipper system will help you get the cake out of the carrier easily.

Disposable paper carriers cannot provide an airtight seal like their reusable counterparts. So you should only keep your cake in a disposable holder for a few hours .

Make sure to get a cake container that is tall enough to fit the cake with all the designs and toppers while being able to shut the lid securely. I use cardboard boxes with a lid that has a window because they fit snugly over the top without damaging the cake. I can even place another box on top!

Consider Additional Useful Features

For easy carrying, many carriers are designed with a handle on top. However, make sure that the handle is durable and can actually hold the weight of your cake . You can check the review section to see what people think about the handle; if most people say it's flimsy, you shouldn't use it.

If you have a small kitchen, you might find a carrier with a collapsible design useful. When not in use, you can fold it down for easy storage . And for easy cleaning, check if your carrier is dishwasher-safe.

Finally, if you want to showcase your gorgeous cake or keep an eye on it during transit, choose a product with a transparent lid or a clear window.

In addition to reviewing and commenting on our buying guide, Shayanne also took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about cake carriers.

"It is almost impossible to transport a cake without a container," Shayanne explains, "but in life, you never know what could happen. If you find yourself without a cake carrier, the best solution I have found is using a box (I typically use old Amazon boxes), taping the cake on its board to the base of the box, and loosely covering the top with plastic wrap.

I also make sure the cake is ice cold , if not frozen, for this step so I don't risk ruining the design or frosting."

Shayanne says, "To keep a cake fresh without a container, use a cake stand with a lid or plastic wrap. If storing after the event, I like to cut slices from the cake and individually wrap them in plastic or put them in a storage container. You can freeze slices or refrigerate them this way."

9 Tips to Safely Transport a Cake Long Distances

Share this post:

Your love and dedication show in every detail of your cake. You feel happy and proud of how your baking project turned out, but your job isn’t over yet.

The next step is to successfully move the cake without disrupting any decorations to the party. To some, this process can be even more challenging than making the cake itself!

Luckily, I’ve got a few tricks you can follow to help you safely transport a cake long distances without messing up its look.

Ready to learn all about them? Let’s begin!

How to Transport a Cake For a Long Distance

The effort and time that goes into perfecting a cake are some of the main reasons you need to learn how to safely transport it.

It’s not just about a tipped-over decoration or some smudged frosting; it’s about all that time in the kitchen and the smiles you want to see on your loved ones’ faces!

So, how can you do it? Here are some tricks I tried myself:

1 – Avoid Soft Fillings

Planning for transporting your cake starts from the minute you gather the ingredients. So, when you start to layer frosting and fillings, think if these ingredients will survive the trip.

I remember once when I used a pastry cream filling, and I have to say that it wasn’t the smartest choice. Don’t get me wrong, it was delicious but didn’t hold up its shape after a lengthy journey.

Cake Layers

As the cake was moved, the pastry cream made the layers slide onto one another instead of staying in place.

Moreover, it’s best refrigerated before it’s served, so it’s not the best choice if your cake will travel for more than four hours.

This is why I recommend using buttercream instead. It’s rich, tasty, and will set beautifully, holding your cake layers together.

Of course, this only works if you have the flexibility to choose the ingredients. When you’re preparing a special order, some clients might insist on that tasty yet slippery pastry cream.

Don’t worry because this doesn’t mean your cake will be an out-of-control mess.

Just use a border of buttercream around the edge of each layer, loading the center with the soft filling. Buttercream will hold the cake layers up and keep the soft filling from sliding too much.

Think of it as a fence to hold in your filling! This step will make your cake much more sturdy and easier to transport.

2 – Think About Your Decorations

Decorating A Cake

When decorating the cake, think about the sturdiness of the decorations. In other words, ask yourself: Will the decorations hold against all the bumps in the road?

Sturdy gum paste flowers may transport quite well, while a design of piped whipped cream flowers will most likely melt when transported.

So, unless you want to end up with a wilted and slightly depressing flower, I would avoid whipped cream.

You should also think about what decorations would be best to add after you have arrived at your destination.

For example, I’d save any fragile fondant figures or other delicate decorations to be added to the cake once it has reached its final display spot.

Not only will it make traveling less stressful, but it’ll ensure that your cake looks perfect before being served.

3 – Stack the Cake for Transport

Three-Tiered Cake

If you are planning to transport a two-tiered (or higher) cake, you want to construct the cake well to ensure it arrives at its destination safely.

Cake supports, like this one from Amazon, are essential for building any stacked cake. These supports are placed inside a cake and pressed into the bottom layer after it has been assembled.

The supports should be the same height as the cake so that they are level with the top of the cake once they are pressed in.

When you place the second cake on top of the first, the top cake will sit on the supports rather than the cake itself. This means the bottom cake will not have any weight on top of it.

What if you skip the cake supports? Well, the top cake may slowly sink into the bottom as the weight becomes too much for the bottom to hold.

And we don’t want that, do we?

When the cake supporters hold the weight, the cake will maintain its structure, becoming easier to transport.

4 – Connect Your Cakes

Long Toothpicks

Connecting the tiers of the cake will also make transportation less troublesome. If you have a multi-tiered cake, consider connecting the tiers so the cake acts as one unit, rather than several separate cakes.

A simple wooden dowel can be stuck into the top cake and gently pressed down through all the tiers. There are also many different cake systems on the market, helping bakers connect tiered cakes and making those tasty creations easier to transport.

When your stacked cake is linked together, the tiers will be much easier to move as they won’t slide—even with whipped cream in the middle!

5 – Get a Strong Box

A good old box is the perfect solution for transporting a smaller cake over a long distance. Just get a sturdy box to put the cake in, and you’ll be good to go!

Remember that the board or plate that the cake sits on should be touching the sides of the box, or it will slide around as you travel.

For example, if you place the cake on a ten-inch cake board like this one from Amazon, the box should also be ten inches in diameter. This will prevent your cake from moving around and keep it pristine even over a long-distance ride.

6 – Chill Your Cake

Before traveling, always let your cake chill for a few hours. Keeping the cake in the fridge will help the layers and decorations set.

With or without decorations, chilling helps set baked goods and keeps everything in shape. Moreover, it’ll prevent the layers from sliding and ruining the look of your cake.

I recommend chilling the cake for at least two hours, but preferably overnight if you can.

No longer, though. Remember that you can’t bake a cake too much in advance because you still want it to taste fresh and look amazing.

7 – Get a Non-Slip Mat

Silicone Baking Mat

If you’ll need to drive to transport the cake, whether in a box or just stacked on a cake board, you want to ensure it doesn’t move around as you drive.

The easiest way to do this is to place the cake or box on a non-slip mat. One of the best options is a silicone baking mat like this one , guaranteeing it’s a little larger than your cake.

Put the mat first and then place the cake on top. This mat will prevent the cake from moving around as you drive.

Don’t have a silicone baking mat? No problem.

A silicone pot holder, rubber can opener, yoga mat, or rubber cabinet liner will work. As a matter of fact, anything that would help hold the cake in place, like rubber, silicone, or plastic, won’t disappoint you.

8. Invest in a Carrier

To tell you the truth, I didn’t consider investing in a cake carrier until I really started to take baking more seriously.

Do I regret this? Just a little bit.

I can think of all the times I ended up with messed-up decorated cakes that needed an emergency facelift right before serving.

This is why I strongly recommend buying a professionally designed cake carrier , especially if you plan on transporting cakes often.

There are multiple cake-carrying systems to help protect your cake while in transit. You can even get a carrier made to transport multi-tiered cakes!

Some traveling cake carriers can be pricey, but if you’re delivering and moving cakes frequently, they’re worth the investment.

9. Be Ready For Repairs

I hate to break the bad news, but even with all these tips, your cake might still get messed up.

Mistakes happen, and while these tips can help protect your precious cake, they’re not 100% guaranteed.

I always pack everything I would need to repair an unexpected cake accident. Spatulas, piping bags, extra frosting, fondant flowers, and everything else you’d think you’d need should be on that emergency list.

Trust me; this is one of the most vital tips to transporting a cake for a long distance, as you can fix it or give it a touch up whenever you like.

Final Thoughts

Successfully transporting a cake has two main steps.

First, you should think about transportation and how it’ll affect your ingredients. Start by considering the suitable filling and decorations, and ensure you securely build the cake.

The second step is to pack the cake well. From using an appropriately sized box to using toothpicks to secure tiers, a silicone mat, or a carrier, there are several options to consider.

Just follow these two general guidelines, and a triumphant cake delivery is guaranteed!

Do I need to pack dry ice around it to keep it cool? We will be in the car for about 7 hours.

Thursday 14th of July 2022

Hi Valerie!

You could use dry ice if you'd like, but ice packs and ice would work as well, as long as you put it in bags to prevent everything from getting wet. You'd also want to keep an eye on the ice to make sure you don't need to stop and get more while on the drive. Good luck!

How to Transport a Cake

How to Transport a Cake

The cake is baked and decorated – now it’s time to party! Whether you’re traveling 20 miles or 20 feet, these helpful tips and tricks about how to transport cakes will help ensure that your treat gets to wherever it’s going safe and sound.

LET’S START OFF WITH A FEW BASICS:

  • All about that base.  Make sure to secure your bottom layer to the cake board or platter using a little swipe of buttercream frosting. This will prevent your cake from sliding off the base.
  • Choose the right size board for the job.  You want to use a  cake board  that measures at least 2 in. bigger than your cake. For example, if you’re transporting an 8 in. cake, use a 10 in. cake board. This gives you some extra room for moving the cake in and out of the box and prevents your decorations from getting smudged against the side of the box.
  • Speaking of, double (or triple) up on those cake boards.  A little extra support can go a long way, especially if your cake has more than one tier. For tiered or heavier cakes, we suggest taping two or three cake boards together for extra stability.
  • When it comes to the box, size matters.  For a snug and safe fit, try to use a  cake box  that’s the same size as your cake board. If your box is slightly larger than your board, use a non-skid mat inside the box to prevent your cake from sliding around. Also, don’t forget to account for height. Select a box at least 2 in. taller than your cake, especially if it’s piled high with decorations.
  • Package decorations separately.  If you have gum paste flowers, fondant decorations or candles for your cake, package those separately and place them on your cake once you’ve arrived at your destination.

Once your cake and decorations are packed, you’re ready to hit the road! There are a few things you can do during this stage to make sure your cake arrives ready to serve.

PLANNING AHEAD

  • Whether or not to consider the weather.  Cake, icing and filling are all sensitive to heat and cold. If you’re traveling a long distance in the summertime, you may want to avoid using Swiss meringue buttercream or cream cheese frosting, which are sensitive to heat.
  • Let your host know if you need fridge space.  If your cake needs to be refrigerated when you arrive, make sure you call ahead and let your host know to make some room in the fridge!

SUPPORTING AND PACKING

  • Time to chill!  To make it easier to handle buttercream cakes, you can chill it in the fridge or freezer before transporting. This will make the surface of your cake less likely to smudge when packing your cake.
  • Build your box around your cake.  Rather than building your cake box separately then trying to find a way to drop the cake in without smudging it, try assembling the cake around the box. Simply place the cake (on its board) on the flat bottom of the box, then build up the sides and tape it closed.
  • For added support and stability, use a cake carrier . If you want to give your cake added protection, try using our cake carrier. With three locking latches and a sturdy handle, this carrier is great for transporting heavier cakes up to 5 in. tall and 10 in. round.
  • Travel first, build later.  If your cake has more than one tier, package each tier separately, then assemble your cake once you’ve arrived at your destination.
  • Plan for repairs.  It also couldn’t hurt to bring a little extra icing, prepared decorating bags and a spatula to fix any smudges that happen during transport.

Our take on plastic

Plastic is a key material for IKEA, and remains so going forward. It is strong, durable, lightweight and versatile. It is a main component in a large amount of our products and has a wide variety of applications from surface materials such as paint and foil, to screws and shelf pegs. There is a lot of valid concern regarding how plastic impacts the environment and at IKEA we take this very seriously. As part of our larger circular journey and transition from virgin fossil based material, we are working hard to change all plastic in our home furnishing products to plastic made from recycled and/or renewable raw materials.

Only recycled or renewable plastics

Plastic is most commonly derived from oil and gas, which are non-renewable fossil sources. These sources do not renew themselves and will eventually be depleted. Our ambition is that by 2030, all plastic used in our products will be based on renewable or recycled materials. Renewable plastic is made from materials such as vegetable oil, corn, wheat grain and sugar cane. Recycled plastic allows us to give a second life to non-biodegradable products such as PET bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill. Using recyclable sources also lessens our dependency on oil as a raw material. Currently more than 40% of our plastic products are based on recycled and renewable materials and our aim is to reach 100%. As we add products made from recycled and renewable materials to our offer, we hope to inspire other companies to do the same.

Phasing out single-use plastics

Single-use plastic items pollute ecosystems if not disposed of responsibly. As part of our commitment to people and the planet, all single-use plastic products from the global home furnishing range were phased out in 2020. This includes items such as plates, cups, and plastic straws offered in our restaurants, bistros, and cafes. These were replaced by disposables made from 100% renewable sources.

PET and PP our most commonly used plastics

Polythylene terephthalate (PET) and Polypropylene (PP) are durable, hygienic and shatter-resistant plastics. They absorb very little water and have good chemical resistance. Both PET and PP can be reused and recycled, which reduces waste and gives the product several lives through use and reuse. PET is the most recycled plastic in the world and can be used for many different purposes such as plastic bottles and containers for packaging food and beverages as well as for personal care products, pharmaceuticals and many other consumer products. At IKEA we mainly use recycled PET in boxes, filling material for textiles and kitchen front foil. PET is approved by health-agencies as safe to use for food and beverage. IKEA uses recycled PET that is post-consumer based, which means it is based on collected and sorted PET bottles.

Clean and safe

IKEA takes product safety very seriously and all products are tested and comply with the strictest possible laws and safety standards on all IKEA markets. Customers should always feel confident that products bought at IKEA are safe and healthy to use. IKEA wants to minimize or totally refrain from the use of chemicals and substances that can be harmful to people and the environment.

Together, we can do more

Our journey towards only using recycled or renewable plastic will take some time and require new ways of doing things, but we are determined to take responsibility and find new solutions. We want to give our customers the possibility to choose products made from more sustainable materials that can be recycled again one day. Together, we can make a big difference!

The 5 Best Cake Carriers

There's nothing more frustrating than spending hours making a beautiful cake only to have it get smashed in transit — I know, because it's happened to me. The best cake carriers are made from durable, food-safe materials with sturdy bases and tall covers that won't ruin your decorations.

Most cake carriers are made from plastic, which is lightweight, fairly durable, and usually dishwasher-friendly. Some have convenient carrying handles on the top, and most are designed so that the base — where your cake will sit — can lock into the cover, ensuring that the two pieces don't separate and cause your cake to fall out of its carrier. Typically, the base will either have a twist-lock design or tabs that snap the lid onto it.

For general use, you'll want to look for a carrier with a diameter of at least 12 inches and a height of at least 6 inches. This size will typically fit a 10-inch cake or pie , though if you make Bundt or quarter-sheet cakes, you'll want to look for speciality carriers.

If you want to transport and serve your cake on the same base, look for one with a sleek aesthetic that you love. You may also want to look for additional features, depending on what you tend to bake. Some cake carriers also have convertible bases that can either be used for cupcakes or as serving trays.

Never deal with smudged frosting, toppled cakes, and other avoidable baking emergencies with one of these cake carriers, all of which are conveniently available on Amazon.

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

1. The Best Overall

STERILITE Cake Server

  • Dimensions: 13 7/8 inches by 13 5/8 inches by 8 inches

Surprise your friends with this opaque cake carrier , which will let you do a big reveal of your cake's design once you arrive at your destination. Amazon shoppers love this durable plastic carrier, which boasts an overall 4.8-star rating along with over 4,300 reviews. The base snaps to the lid, and there's a carrying handle on the top. It's safe for both the freezer and the top rack of the dishwasher, and the 8-inch height gives more than enough clearance for standard two-layer cakes.

One fan raved: "I love this product! It keeps my cakes moist, it's light-weight, and so easy to travel with.I use it very often (at least 4 times a week).I don't feel stressed when carrying cakes on crowded streets of NYC. It's great so far! It's sturdy, easy to clean, locks are really tight and secure. It's not too expensive and the quality is amazing!I'd buy it again!"

2. The Best Convertible Round Carrier

Top Shelf Elements Cake Carrier

  • Dimensions: 12.56 inches by 12.09 inches by 5.94 inches

This convertible cake carrier is perfect for anyone who loves to entertain. Made of plastic, it has a clear snap-lock lid, so you can see what's inside, and the sturdy base converts to a five-section serving tray that's great for serving chips and dip, charcuterie, candy, and more. While the height is just under 6 inches, reviewers had no problem fitting a two-layer cake in this carrier. This carrier is top-rack dishwasher-friendly and comes in three pastel colors.

One fan raved: "This is a wonderful carrier for traveling with pies, cakes, cupcakes or any dessert that fits under the dome. The best feature is the secure lock in place it provides. The handle is designed very well also. The pale seafoam green color is very pleasing to display on your kitchen counter. I love it!!!"

3. The Best Collapsible Cake Carrier

Prepworks By Progressive Collapsible Cake Carrier

  • Dimensions: 15.75 inches by 15.75 inches by 6 inches (expanded)

If you're short on storage space, this collapsible cake carrier is a great choice, since it folds down to just under 5 inches tall when collapsed. When it's fully extended, it can hold the included two-tier cupcake holder with enough spaces for 24 cupcakes, or a taller two-layer cake. Made from BPA-free plastic, it's dishwasher safe and features a snap-lock base with a carrying handle on the clear lid. It comes in both red and blue.

One fan raved: "Love it!!!! I had no idea of the true capacity of this cake keeper until I got it and “unfolded” it. VERY well made. At first I was worried because the cupcake tiers seemed to slide around on the base...but, as soon as you put the lid on and lock it in place...those trays didn’t budge. I was able to transport them an hour away with absolutely no damage to my cupcakes."

4. The Best For Bundt Cakes

Nordicware Bundt Cake Keeper

  • Dimensions: 13 inches by 12 inches by 7 inches

This Bundt cake keeper will keep your stunning glazed creation in perfect condition until you get it to your next picnic or party. It's made from dishwasher-safe plastic with a twist-lock lid design, and the lid is transparent so you can still see your cake while it's stored. In addition to being great for transport, this carrier is also a good way to keep cakes moist for days after they're baked, and the taller design gives plenty of clearance for intricate Bundts.

One fan raved: "I purchased several of these before the holidays to use when giving Bundt cakes (rum cakes) away to family and friends around the holidays. These are fantastic! I love the locking lid, so that it can't be inadvertently knocked off, especially in transit. I kept a few for my own use at home and love, love, love them. [They] wash up nicely with a little warm soapy water. Great product!"

5. The Best For Sheet Cakes And Small Baked Goods

Snapware Snap 'N Stack 2-Layer Carrier

  • Dimensions: 14.75 inches by 11 inches by 8.5 inches

This versatile two-layer cake carrier is perfect for the all-around baker, since it can hold quarter-sheet cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and more. Made from BPA-free plastic, it can hold up to 24 cupcakes, and is safe to use in the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. The stacking containers have a snap-lock design, and the top lid includes a convenient carrying handle.

One fan raved: "I have had this cupcake carrier for years, and like it so much that I have bought it for others. The quality is great, it holds together securely, and the layers are deep enough to hold cupcakes with a significant amount of frosting on them. The interior trays also have nice deep wells so the cupcakes don't shift in travel, and can be lifted out to use as a serving tray. Definitely recommend!"

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

Soviet cakes named after cities of the world

Prague cake.

travel cake carrier

Until recently, you could find the swanky Prague Restaurant on Old Arbat Street in Moscow. It was famous, first and foremost, for its cakes. This was where in the 1950s and 1960s its head pastry chef, Vladimir Guralnik, created the recipes for what would become themost popular Soviet desserts. These included Bird's Milk Cake, Wenceslas Cake and the Czech Roll—desserts that are familiar to anyone born in the Soviet Union. And, of course, there was the legendary Prague Cake, named after the Czech capital, which is where Guralnik studied confectionary-making in his youth. It still remains one of the most popular desserts in Russia and across the former USSR.

The funnything is that the city of Prague doesn't actuallyhave such a cake. In taste, it is most similar to Austria's Sachertorte, but the recipe is different. Prague Cake is simpler and uses condensed milk. It consists of chocolate sponge layers spread with apricot jam and chocolate butter cream and is then coated with a delicate chocolate glaze. And there is no liqueur in the Soviet cake, although homemade versions come in different variations.

Kievsky Cake

This light nutty meringue cake was invented at a Kiev confectionary factory in 1956. The recipe was devised by Konstantin Petrenko and Nadia Chernogor. Nadia was just 17 at the time and had just begun studying confectionery making. One timeshe forgot to put some egg whites in the fridge and, to avoid being told off for wasting food products, she used them to make cakes with a layer of butter cream. Before long, her invention went into wide scale production, and the cake was named after the capital of the Ukraine.

Minsky Cake

This fruit shortcake is named after the capital of Belarus, where it has been produced since the 1970s. But it is more popularly known as Little Mushrooms Cake or Autumn Cake since it looks like a forest clearing that’s decorated with "mushrooms" made from white butter cream and green "leaves." These days you won't see it so often, but practically every shop or cafe offers a smaller version of Minsk Cake – short crust tartlets topped with "little mushrooms."

Warsaw and Krakow Cakes

In the mid-1950s at least two cakes named in honor of Poland made their appearance in the USSR. Poland was one of the key members of the Warsaw Pact .

The cakes were virtually identical. Krakow Cake was a short crust rectangle topped with almond meringue, and Warsaw Cake was the same but included fruit jam between the layers. Sadly, and undeservedly, these delicious cakes have been largely forgotten today.

Leningradsky Cake

This was one of the most beloved Soviet cakes, and everyone with a sweet tooth was always on the lookout for it. Its recipe was approved in the early 1960s. It is believed that it was meant to compete with Kievsky Cake and therefore was named after the great city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).

The cake consists of layers of shortcake and chocolate buttercream that are injected with brandy. The top of the cake is decorated with buttercream flowers and chocolate fondanticing. In Soviet times, it was so popular that is would sell out as soon as it appeared in the shops! But today you can buy and taste this legendary cake in many cities across Russia.

Bonus: Moskva Cake

travel cake carrier

Quite a few of dishes, ranging from salads to sweet buns, were named after the Soviet capital. And in the early 1950s, the city acquired a Moscow-branded raisin cake with powdered sugar. The cake was even included in the space diet for cosmonauts.

There was also a gateau-type Moscow Cake consisting of three layers of sponge steeped in chocolate and strawberry buttercream. But this wasn't as popular as the Leningradsky or Prague cakes and has largely been forgotten altogether. As a result, until recently Moscow was left without a cake bearing its name!

It was only in 2015 that Moscow pastry chefs decided to rectify this injustice. They devised several cakes and asked Muscovites to choose which wasbest. In the end, 200,000 people voted for this one, made with hazelnut layers and condensed milk. Today you can try it in any Moscow cafe, pick it up in a store or even make it yourself.
