“WA is a huge state, and this short trip offers a great introduction into some of the unspoilt places you can visit and amazing wildlife you can view.” – Liz – One Stop Adventures Travel Expert

Description

  • Other Information
  • Weird and fascinating rock formations at the Pinnacles
  • Hike through the amazing landscapes of Kalbarri National Park including Natures Window & Z-Bend
  • Optional abseiling at Murchison Gorge
  • Unique Shell Beach
  • Interact with the famous Monkey Mia dolphins!

Day 1 - Perth to Kalbarri

Begin your exploration of Western Australia’s Indian Ocean coastline by heading north from Perth, the state capital, to the Pinnacles Desert. Sitting inside Nambung National Park, these incredible limestone rock formations are entirely natural, having been formed in a way still inconclusively understood by scientists.

You’ll have the chance to experience this unique landscape on foot with the help of a knowledgeable local guide. This 4 Day Monkey Mia Tour then continues past the landmarks of Geraldton, including Point Moore Lighthouse and the HMAS Sydney Memorial, so that you can spend the night in Kalbarri at the mouth of the Murchison River.

Meals: Lunch & dinner Accommodation:  Dormitory accommodation (private room upgrades available)

Day 2 - Kalbarri to Shark Bay

Day 2 is dedicated to the delights of Kalbarri National Park, which wraps itself around the Murchison River’s estuary. Keep an eye out for short-beaked echidnas – one of just two egg-laying mammals – as you follow the path to Nature’s Window, framing the river as it flows towards the ocean.

Then tackle the Z Bend trail into Murchison Gorge, which promises even finer views than those available from your previous vantage point. You’ll also have the chance to abseil down the walls of the gorge with our Kalbarri Abseil optional extra.

The day continues northwards towards Shark Bay UNESCO World Heritage Site, visiting a unique beach made of white cockle shells along the way.

Meals: Breakfast & dinner Accommodation:  Dormitory accommodation (private room upgrades available) Optional activity:  Abseiling at Murchison Gorge (purchase on the day)

Day 3 - Monkey Mia to Northhampton

Having stayed overnight at Monkey Mia, you’ll be in a prime position to experience one of the world’s most unusual but charming of wild animal encounters. Around 300 bottlenose dolphins live off Monkey Mia, and a handful of them have developed a special bond with visitors – swimming into the water just shin-high each morning in search of food.

There’ll be plenty of time to enjoy the phenomenal coastline these dolphins call home before heading off to visit the oldest living structures on Earth. Known as stromatolites, these coral-like columnar structures have been formed by an ancient type of bacteria over billions of years and exist in just a few places worldwide.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner Accommodation:  Dormitory accommodation (private room upgrades available)

Day 4 - Northhampton to Perth

Much of today is reserved for making the journey back to Perth. However, regular comfort and meal breaks ensure there is still time to capture the commanding coastal vistas to memory.

Leaving the working farm at Northbrook a short distance from the town of Northampton, you’ll follow the shoreline from Highway 60, passing through a variety of protected areas, including Beekeepers Nature Reserve and Wanagarren Nature Reserve.

Switching over to Indian Ocean Drive, sights to look out for include Edwards Island and Lancelin Island, edged by crisp white sands. You’ll arrive in central Perth just after sunset, at around 7pm.

Meals: Breakfast

What to bring

1.5 Litre refillable water bottle Hat, sunglass and sunscreen Comfortable walking/hiking shoes Weather appropriate clothing Wind jacket and warmer clothes for evenings Insect repellant and/or fly net Towel and toilettries Swimwear

Please note : The double/twin rooms can only be booked if there are 2 people. If you want to book for 1 person, please select the private room. Our commitment

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Western Australian Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

This can be provided by an accredited local travel agent or from your preferred insurance company.

What is your Vaccination Policy?

In accordance with current Government regulations, it is no longer a requirement to be double vaccinated, although we do highly recommend it.

It is not necessary to bring any medical supplies other than any personal items you may require. Each tour will carry an first aid box and our guides are all certified in First Aid.

How much luggage can I take?

You may bring a backpack and suitcases and it will be stored securely in our trailer or under the bus during the trip. We recommend bring a smaller day pack to store your daily essentials such as drinks, jackets and sunscreen while on tour.

Where can I store my luggage whilst on tour?

During the tour your main luggage will be stored in our trailer. This trailer is always locked however we cannot guarantee the complete safety of your gear from theft or damage. This is why it is so important to purchase a good travel insurance.

If you need to store your luggage whilst away on tour, this can be done through your accommodation. Most hostel and hotels will store your luggage safely free of charge.

Will I be able to do any laundry whilst on tour?

Generally you will not have enough time to do laundry whilst on tour. You will be having far too much fun! However, for longer tours heading towards Adelaide involving hostel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to wash your clothes if really need. Please enquire by contact us directly via email or phone.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

For all camping tours in the Northern Territory you will need a sleeping bag. The Northern Territory can get very cold at night, especially during the months of June and July. Our tours are made to be fun, informative and active and can be enjoyed by anyone with a moderate degree of fitness and agility. Travellers should be comfortable with hiking/walking up to 5km each day.

Do I need travel insurance?

Insurance is important in protecting visitors from loss or damange of goods, medical problems, cancelation by passengers or other casualties. Its highly recommended.

Some tours on this website require you to have travel insurance. If you are Australian then it is not necessary.

Can I get online whilst travelling?

For tours incorporating hostel/hotel style accommodation you may have the opportunity to use wireless internet or use of nearby internet cafe.

This will vary from tour to tour so please contact us directly for more accurate information.

For camping tours internet will not be available.

Will I be able to use my mobile whilst on tour?

If you are using Telstra as your mobile service provider than most likely yes! Their coverage of Australia is quite extensive so you shouldn't have too much trouble.

No. Tour prices do not include any travel arrangements other than for the duration of the tour itself.

If you need assistance with booking flights or buses our travel team and certainly help - Just ask!

How far in advance do I need to book my tour?

Who travels with us

Is this tour for me.

Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 45, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture.

Our tours are for those wanting to really explore Australia and its many facets. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on experience.

The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast - although there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings.

As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.

What type of groups go on these tours?

Onboard our tours there are usually around 5 - 24 people ( depending on the tour and destination ). Lost In Australia's travellers want to explore the country and develop a real sense for the land, nature and its people. We travel in small groups which allows us to get from destination to destination quickly and effortlessly whilst being flexible and free!

Is it ok to travel alone on one of these tours?

We have many travellers jumping onboard our tours by themselves. Those travelling by themselves are very much welcomed and encouraged. During your outback adventure you'll meet new and interesting people and forge relationships that will last a life time.

Those who do travel by themselves will probably be sharing a room with a travelling companion of the same sex, but even if you do get your own room, you won't be charged extra. For camping tours, generally there are enough tents available that you can have your own if you choose to.

For more information please contact us directly.

How many people will be on tour?

Group sizes vary from tour to tour. You can find the size of your group by checking out information at the top right hand corner of the tour page. Group sizes range of 5 - 24 people.

Is there an age limit?

We get a large range of travellers from all over the world and from a very large age range. We get people of all ages joining these trips; generally our travellers vary between 21 - 45 though we also get many happy travellers in their 60s and 70s. Some tours however have a restriction on children under the age of 16 - 18. This will depend on the destination so please email us for more info.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Not really. The centre of Australia is quite dry and there is very few places where we are allowed to swim. However, for tours heading upwards towards Darwin there may be areas for swimming. If you aren't able to swim then you don't need to go into the water. In many cases there may be shallow areas when you can still get wet without having to actually swim. Please contact us for more information.

Cost and Fees

What does "paid locally" mean.

Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.

Will I need additional money?

Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.

Do I need to tip our guide?

If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary in Australia and is not at all expected.

Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?

Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. If you wish to do optional activities such as helicopter rides or wildlife safaris, then an extra cost may be needed. However, this will always be made clear at the time of your booking.

Whilst on tour

What type of tent will i get.

Tents are generally designed to accommodate a minimum of 2 people. This means there is plenty of room to move about and store your luggage. However, most Uluru tours we try and encourage the use of swags and mattress rather than tents. This is the ideal way to camp in the centre of Australia; Around a campfire, under the stars!

What will the food be like?

Our emphasis is on fresh food wherever possible and our meals are nutritious and varied on these tours. If you are vegetarian or gluten intolerant we can cater for you, but if you have very specific dietary needs you may need to provide your own food, please discuss this at time of booking. For breakfast we supply cereals, fruits, toast, tea and coffee. Lunch is usually a self-serve picnic sandwich and salads; in the evening we have a cooked dinner - This can vary between pastas, bbqs, rices and other hearty food to keep you energized! We always carry water in the vehicle and you will often have the chance to buy your own drinks, ice-creams etc at stops. Please refer to each individual tour/package to establish which meals are included.

Can you cater of special diets?

We can certain cater for most dietary needs. Please advise us at the time of your booking so arrangements can be made. For travellers with more extreme diets we may ask that you bring along additional snacks.

Can I book extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour?

Definitely - We know Australia inside and out and would be happy to give you good recommodations.

Are there days where we travel for a long time?

During the first day we usually do a couple of hours driving to get out of the city and into the country side. However, once in the national parks, trips between attractions usually take between 30minutes to an hour.

For tours heading up to Darwin or down to Adelaide, expect periods where we drive for a few hours at a time. Australia is enormous and the distance between towns and attractions can be quite large. But don't worry, we take plenty of breaks so your able to stretch and move about.

For more accurate information please see tour itineraries.

What will the weather be like?

Between the months of April and August Central Australia is quite cold so be sure to bring warm clothing. Temperatures range from about 20c during the day right down to 2c at night.

Between October and March temperature are warm, so light clothing during the day is ok. However, night times can still be quite cool so its wise to bring light winter clothing for extra warm.

Where do I meet the tour?

Our tour guide picks up from all major hotels and hostels. For pick locations in suburban or rural areas please contact us to arrange a meeting point and time.

What is the weather like in Western Australia?

WA is Australia’s largest state, comprising one-third of its land mass. In the north much of the landscape is barren. The Great Sandy Desert fringes the central-west coast. The Nullarbor, a vast dry plain, sweeps across the south and over the border into South Australia (SA). The southwestern corner of the state is a fertile area of forest and vineyards, and is only small in comparison to the size of the rest of WA.

Interesting variations in landscape include the Kimberley in the extreme north of the state, a wild and rugged area with a convoluted coastline and stunning inland gorges.

The Pilbara, in the northwest, is magnificent ancient-rock and gorge country from which the state derives vast mineral wealth. Away from the coast most of WA is simply a huge empty stretch of outback: along with the Nullarbor Plain and the Great Sandy Desert, the Gibson and Great Victoria Deserts cover much of the state.

It’s tropical in the north, where the Dry and Wet seasons replace winter and summer. The Dry lasts from June to August and the Wet from December to February, with monsoonal rain falling from January onwards. The rain can render roads impassable and Port Hedland weathers a serious cyclone at least every two years. In the interior the climate is semi-arid and arid. The southwest of WA is temperate. It’s often above 25°C here while the average temperature along the Kimberley coast is a heavenly 28°C. Up in the Pilbara temperatures can soar to an enthusiasm-depleting 48°C.

Departing Perth, we travel north to the Pinnacles Desert to view the spectacular sight of thousands of limestone pillars that resemble an ancient ruin. Following the scenic Indian Ocean Drive, we break for lunch at the popular seaside town of Dongara.

From here, we make our way up the coast to Geraldton. This bustling town is the commercial centre for the Mid-West region, exporting Iron Ore, Mineral Sands, Wheat, Barley and Western Australian Rock Lobster.

Whilst in Geraldton we visit the beautifully designed HMAS Sydney Memorial, which features a silver dome of 645 seagulls to represent the loss of HMAS Sydney sailors.

We also stop at the St Francis Xavier Cathedral which was built in stages from 1914 to its eventual opening in 1938. The Byzantine style architecture of this cathedral is one of Monsignor John Hawes’ greatest masterpieces.

Still in Geraldton we explore the Yamaji Art Centre which is Aboriginal owned and operated and provides professional services to support and develop Aboriginal artists living in the Lower Murchison region of Yamaji Country. On our way out of this region, we will visit Northampton, one of the oldest settlements outside Perth today, classified by the National Trust as a Historic Town.

We will see stunning coastal gorges and magnificent scenery on our drive further up the coast, including Hutt Lagoon and the vivid pink Salt Lake where beta-carotene is harvested for commercial use, and Pot Alley.

Accommodation :  Edge Resort Kalbarri

Day 2  – Kalbarri to Monkey Mia Dolphins

Kalbarri Skywalk, Shark Bay, Stromatolites, Shell Beach, Eagle Bluff, Denham, Monkey Mia

Kalbarri is nestled at the Murchison River mouth and surrounded by stunning coastline, soaring river gorges and protected bays. Today, we will visit the amazing Kalbarri National Park for spectacular views of the Murchison River Gorges from the awesome Kalbarri Skywalk.

From here we will journey to the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and marvel at the astonishing world-class natural attractions in the region. Shark Bay is well known for its white beaches, turquoise waters and rust-red sand dunes. It is primarily renowned for both its terrestrial and marine life. It is nature at its most pure.

Next stop is Hamelin Pool to view to view Stromatolites, which are one of the earliest forms of life to evolve on our planet. Living fossils, part of the earth’s evolutionary history.

Further up we will visit Shell Beach which is home to billions of tiny Cardiid Cockle; the 60 km stretch of beach is covered to a depth of some seven to ten metres.

A stop at Eagle Bluff will give you a scenic view over the coast; you might be lucky enough to spot Lemon Sharks, Stingrays, Turtles or Dugongs.

Our last stop for today is Monkey Mia Resort. Before dinner go for a walk along the beach to see the Dolphins or go for a refreshing swim.

Accommodation : Monkey Mia Resort

Day 3  – Monkey Mia to Carnarvon

Three-hour Dolphin Cruise, Carnarvon One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct

This morning, on day three of our Perth to Exmouth tour, experience a very special breakfast whilst watching the dolphins come in close to the shore. After breakfast walk to the beach to see dolphin feeding and hear all about their lives in Shark Bay.

Join a three-hour boat cruise to see the dolphins in their natural environment and other wonderful sea creatures of the Shark Bay area, including dugongs, turtles, stingrays, lemon sharks, nervous sharks and sponge dolphins.

After lunch, we head further north to Carnarvon, a regional hub that provides essential services to the surrounding areas. The township lies at the mouth of the Gascoyne River and supports horticultural and fishing industries.

We visit the Carnarvon One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct. The One Mile Jetty was built in 1897 and was the first port in Australia to transport commercial live stock by sea on a regular basis. State ships stopped in Carnarvon on average twice a week until they ceased operations in 1966.

Accommodation : Carnarvon Best Western Motel

Day 4  – Carnarvon to Coral Bay

One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct, Bumbak’s Preserves & Ice creams, & Space and Technology Museum

Carnarvon is a diverse and laidback town where the outback meets the coast. It is recognised as a food bowl region, well known for its bananas, mangos, and luscious seafood. There is a rich indigenous culture, as well as stations producing wool and cattle.

We visit the Carnarvon One Mile Jetty Heritage Precinct. The One Mile Jetty was built in 1897 and was the first port in Australia to transport commercial livestock by the sea on a regular basis. State ships stopped in Carnarvon on average twice a week until they ceased operations in 1966.

This morning we visit the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, Carnarvon Tracking Station and the OTC Satellite Earth Station. The station was built to support NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs.

Visit Bumbak’s before making our way up the coast to Coral Bay. Bumbak’s Preserves & Ice creams is one of Carnarvon’s major tourist destinations. It offers award winning homemade preserves & ice creams possessing an extensive portfolio of 100 lines. Their mango smoothie and banana smoothies are the ultimate of scrumptious.

Visit the Bibbawarra Bore an unusual sight. The artesian bore is 914metres deep and hot water gushes out at 97,741 litres (21,500 gallons) an hour. The temperature of the water 68 degrees Celsius.

Stock troughs were built in the 1940s to transport the water along the stock route for the sheep and cattle. It was funded in part by the Boolathana Pastoral Company and a government grant. The water travelled along the 175 metre long trough, cooling as it flowed along it. This meant by the time it reached the sheep and cattle it was cool enough to drink. The trough was the longest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Lunch at Coral Bay, check into accommodation, don bathers and walk out into the water with your goggles and drift over the coral close to shore.

Accommodation : Ningaloo Coral Bay – Bayview

Day 5  – Coral Bay to Exmouth

The Ningaloo Reef is one of the longest near-shore reefs in the world and Australia’s largest fringing reef system, stretching 300 kilometres from Red Bluff going north along the coast to Muiron Islands the north and Bundegi Beach east in the Exmouth Gulf.
