Eyes wide shut: what the mask on the pillow means.

Eyes Wide Shut is Stanley Kubrick's final movie starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, but what does the mask on the pillow near the end mean?

What does the mask on the pillow at the end of Eyes Wide Shut   mean? Eyes Wide Shut cast Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple, with the former playing a doctor who goes on a strange, sexually charged journey one night when his wife admits to having had adulterous thoughts. The movie is based on the 1920's novella Dream Story  and Kubrick developed the project for decades, and once considered a slightly more comedic take with Steve Martin in the lead role.

In keeping with the filmmaker's quest for perfection, the shoot for Eyes Wide Shut famously rolled on, with the movie holding the record for the longest consecutive shoot, as filming began in late 1996 and wrapped in mid-1998. Tragically it was the director's final film with Kubrick dying less than a week after screening an incomplete cut for the studio and its stars. The movie went through post-production following Stanley Kubrick's death, though some have argued about how much it represents his intended vision.

While the final movie was greeted with somewhat mixed reviews at the time, the appreciation for Eyes Wide Shut has only grown since its 1999 debut. Like much of the director's work like The Shining , movie fans love to debate the symbolism and meaning of Eyes Wide Shut . There are many, many readings of the story available, with the movie itself embracing a sort of dream/nightmare logic. Masks - both literal and figurative - are a major motif, and one of the most important sequences is when Bill infiltrates a masked sex party at a remote mansion, which is being held by members of high society. He's eventually discovered and forced to remove his mask but is saved from a bleak fate by another masked woman who tried to warn him to leave earlier.

The second half of Eyes Wide Shut sees Bill being given ominous warnings from this secret society, and he can't seem to find his mask from the party. In one of the final scenes, Bill comes home and as he comes to bed he sees Alice ( Nicole Kidman ) sleeping next to the same Venetian mask he wore at the party. He then breaks down crying and confesses to Alice his misadventures of the past few days. The big question is how did the mask get there, and who left it?

The most obvious answer is Alice found the mask and left it out as a way to let Bill know she knew something was going on. This is the implication of Dream Story  too - with the movie being quite faithful to the structure of the novella - though Kubrick obviously leaves this moment up to interpretation. The second, and more terrifying suggestion, is the mask is a final warning from the secret society for Bill to drop any further investigation or the fate that befell the woman who saved him could be visited upon Alice.

One intriguing reading of the Eyes Wide Shut   mask being on the pillow is that it's only in Bill's head as if he's exhausted by trying to hide his attempts at infidelity or true feelings from Alice, leading to an emotional breakdown. Other interpretations are floating around, including the idea Alice was also at the party, and while there's no set meaning for how the mask got on that pillow, the idea Alice put it there herself seems to be the prevailing theory. Given how upset she appeared following his confession, it's very unlikely she knew exactly what he was out doing, however.

Tom Cruise may keep quiet about his kids, but the “Top Gun: Maverick” actor is a father of three.

The Golden Globe winner became a parent while married to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001.

After struggling to conceive, the former couple adopted daughter Isabella and son Connor in 1992 and 1995, respectively.

Amid their divorce, the “Big Little Lies” alum suffered an ectopic pregnancy . After splitting from Cruise and moving on with Keith Urban , Kidman later welcomed daughters Sunday and Faith via surrogate.

As for Cruise, he moved on with Katie Holmes in 2005. The duo welcomed their daughter, Suri, in April 2006, seven months before tying the knot in Italy.

Isabella Jane Cruise

Kidman and Cruise adopted Isabella shortly after she was born in 1992, and their daughter has followed in the “Mission: Impossible” star’s Scientologist footsteps.

In a March 2019 newsletter for the organization, Isabella thanked her dad “for everything.”

Although Kidman keeps quiet about her relationship with Isabella, she did speak about her adult children in a November 2018 Who interview .

“They are adults,” the Emmy winner said of Isabella and Connor at the time. “They are able to make their own decisions.

“ They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it’s my job to love them,” she continued.

“I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it’s what my purpose is.”

Connor was also raised in the Church of Scientology after being adopted in 1995.

Cruise and Kidman’s adult son is active on social media and has documented his fishing trips, his new buzzcut hairstyle and more.

Over the years, Connor and his dad have been photographed on rare outings.

The duo watched basketball games together in Connor’s younger years, and have more recently been spotted boarding a helicopter and hanging out on the “Jack Reacher” set.

Suri Cruise

Holmes gave birth to Suri in 2006 and has maintained a close bond with her daughter.

The “Dawson’s Creek” alum told Town & Country in 2017 that she provides the little one with a “stable and innocent” childhood .

Cruise, however, still has “no part” of his youngest child’s life , a source exclusively told Page Six in March 2022.

In a 2012 defamation lawsuit against Bauer Media, the “Jerry Maguire” star said he didn’t see Suri for three months after his and Holmes’ breakup.

“Listen, when there is a divorce … things change,” Cruise said. “It’s not an ideal situation.”

Ex-Scientologist Leah Remini has asserted that Cruise “can’t be connected” to Suri because Holmes is considered a “suppressive person” or “enemy” in the religion.

Tom Cruise Once Hinted Why He's Estranged From His Daughter Suri

Tom Cruise has long been tightlipped about anything that happens in his personal life, but his experience with fatherhood has been an exception, particularly with regard to his youngest child, Suri Cruise . Way back when, the "Mission Impossible" star was bursting at the seams with excitement for the birth of the only child  he shares with ex Katie Holmes , resulting in the revelation that he purchased a $200,000 sonogram machine so he could see her anytime he wanted.

"I'm a filmmaker — I need to see the rushes," he told GQ at the time (via Hollywood ). "At first we did it a lot. I don't know how many times, but I did not exceed FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulations." When Suri was finally born, Tom expressed profound awe. "It [the birth] was everything that we wanted it to be. It was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable," he shared with  "20/20" reporter Deborah Roberts . "What words can you use? It's still something that I'm processing and keep reliving."

However, the dynamic between Tom and Suri experienced a dramatic shift over the years since his highly publicized split from Holmes, resulting in a strained and distant relationship with Suri. In a surprising revelation, the actor asserted that his affiliation with the Church of Scientology played a big part in the estrangement.

Tom Cruise's ties to Scientology got in the way

The intricacies surrounding Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' divorce remain a mystery to this day, but rampant speculation has repeatedly suggested that it had something to do with Cruise's deep ties with Scientology. Knowing that she couldn't escape the shackles of religion if she were to approach the split the conventional way, the "Dawson's Creek" alum reportedly decided to blindside her ex-husband with divorce filings instead and go off the grid with Suri.

Interestingly, this isn't something Cruise has explicitly denied. During his deposition in his $50 million libel suit against a media outfit that alleged he abandoned Suri, he was pressed on whether Holmes left him "in part to protect Suri from Scientology" (via HuffPost ). The "Top Gun" star was backed into a corner then, so he had no choice but to respond: "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes." However, he countered by asserting, "There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion," rendering the point essentially moot.

Tom Cruise reportedly hasn't seen Suri in years

Despite the abrupt nature of their split, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes finalized their divorce in record time. The former couple only took 11 days to iron out the kinks in their separation with Holmes getting sole custody of Suri and $400,000 a year in child support payments until Suri turns 18 — though Cruise was granted ample visitation options.

But he has reportedly never fully utilized his visitation privileges, and initially he chalked it up to the complications of his divorce from Holmes. "Listen, where there is a divorce — if you look at this also in terms of Suri coming to me and certain agreements that you have, when a divorce occurs things change," he said in the deposition (via Radar Online ). "And it's more complicated, as everyone knows when that is, when that occurs, and there are certain agreements; now you have to ask for permission and organize schedules to make things happen. So it wasn't — it's not an ideal scene. It's not an ideal situation."

Unfortunately, it continued over the years, and his relationship with Suri is practically non-existent to this day. A source confirmed with  Page Six that the actor has "no part" in his daughter's life, and this will likely persist as long as he's deeply embedded in Scientology, as the organization prohibits its adherents from associating with former members. "This is his loss, his issue, his problem," another source said. "He must be really brainwashed."

The Ending Of Eyes Wide Shut Explained

1999 was a busy year for a lot of reasons. Facing the centennial, there was a lot to look forward to, and a lot to leave behind. For director Stanley Kubrick, there was one film idea that he just had to finish before the year was over, and that was "Eyes Wide Shut." The movie is based on a German novella from 1926 called "Traumnovelle," or "Dream Story," which focuses on a man in Vienna who finds out his wife has fantasies of other men, and goes on a two-day journey dealing with personal realizations about sex, individualism, and morality.

For Kubrick's film, he transferred the story from early 20th century Vienna to New York City, Greenwich Village specifically, in the 1990s. The director cast Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman , husband and wife at the time, as the main couple in the story named Bill and Alice. The movie began filming in November 1996 and ended in June 1998, holding the Guinness World Records for longest constant movie shoot at over 15 months, with 46 weeks of unbroken shooting.

The film is a confounding story, and even two decades later, fans and critics alike continue to debate the meaning behind "Eyes Wide Shut" and whether the final cut was what Kubrick really wanted.

The themes and meaning of Eyes Wide Shut

While Kubrick's other films explore topics like free will, conformity, and class privilege, "Eyes Wide Shut" takes on society's dehumanization of sex. For Bill and Alice, sex and temptation is all around them, but they only have eyes for each other. But one night Alice admits that she considered having an affair with a handsome naval officer a year earlier, and Bill's whole world is turned upside down. He then begins a night-long journey to explore and possibly give in to his own temptations, stumbling upon a secret society participating in a masked orgy.

The story is strange and winding, adding to the dreamlike quality of filmmaking that takes influence from the original "Dream Story." Throughout the night, Bill meets various strangers who attempt to engage him in sex. While he almost gives in a few times, he makes it through the encounters unscathed until he gets to the main event, the secret society's weird orgy. With this film, Kubrick is taking on "the causes and effects of depersonalized sex." One early review of the film describes the orgy scene as "the fulcrum" of "Eyes Wide Shut," saying, "sex is normally the most intimate means of human interaction, yet here it is reduced to a ritualistic, almost creepy form of gratification ... There is freedom in anonymity, but also isolation and a complete dearth of emotion" ( Reel Views ).

After this encounter, Bill finally realizes the dark side of this world of sex and anonymity, returning to his wife Alice's side. She is still open with him about her past sexual fantasies, but in the end they stay loyal to each other, happy that their marriage and mutual sexual attraction have survived this long.

The crazy process to make Kubrick's last movie

It's safe to say that Kubrick had a reputation for being quite the demanding and unusual filmmaker. Although many people are familiar with his abuse of Shelley Duvall on the set of "The Shining," some might not know just how crazy it was to make "Eyes Wide Shut," the director's last film.

Along with how long it took to film the movie, Kubrick put his main two actors through a lot of intense experiences. The director took take after take of the same scene, but not because he had a detailed vision in mind. According to a  Vanity Fair article detailing the film's production, his "theory was that once his actors bottomed-out in exhaustion and forgot about the cameras, they could rebuild and discover something that neither he nor they expected." Kubrick also never let his actors see any daily footage, and this inability to track his own performance across the film gave Cruise an ulcer, which he hid from Kubrick.

The director also thoroughly blended fact and fiction, creating a feeling of distrust between Cruise and Kidman by choosing to "direct each actor separately and forbid them to share notes. In one painful example, for just one minute of final footage where Alice makes love to a handsome naval officer—an imaginary affair that haunts Bill over the course of the film—Kubrick demanded that Kidman shoot six days of naked sex scenes with a male model ... He banned Cruise from the set and forbade Kidman to assuage her husband's tension by telling him what happened during the shoot." The emotional abuse he put his actors through was apparently worth it for them, but it's up to debate whether or not it improved the final product.

Debate and censorship for Eyes Wide Shut

"Eyes Wide Shut" is Kubrick's final film before his death. According to the documentary "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures," Kubrick was in the middle of post-production when he showed what Warner Bros. executives claim was a relatively final cut of the film on March 1, 1999. The director died six days later, on March 7, 1999, at the age of 70. "Eyes Wide Shut" opened on July 16, 1999, and did well at the box office and with critics. It currently holds a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes . But that doesn't mean that there isn't any controversy attached to the film's release. 

Firstly, the movie had to be censored to hit the R-rating, with the orgy scene taking a large hit. According to a 1999 New York Times article, "65 seconds of the movie were digitally altered. Essentially, shrouded digital figures were placed in front of couples engaged in sex, partly blocking the audience's view." At the same time, some people argued that "Eyes Wide Shut" was an unfinished film, and the final product was not the one Kubrick intended to release. A frequent collaborator of Kubrick, writer Michael Herr, revealed in a Vanity Fair piece that Kubrick called him shortly before he had to show the Warner Bros. executives a cut the film, saying that "there was looping to be done and the music wasn't finished, lots of small technical fixes on color and sound; would I show work that wasn't finished?" He was forced to show the executives due to contractual reasons but didn't want to, and this was likely the cut that later became the final product.

While there's a lot of interesting history and questions revolving around "Eyes Wide Shut," unfortunately Kubrick isn't around to clarify anything. Still, the director's final film impresses as an unforgettable story about morality and sexuality, no matter what way you look at it.

Just weeks after shrugging off breakup rumors, Tom Cruise , 43, and Katie Holmes , 27 (pictured earlier in Sydney Harbour), welcomed their first child together. As for a wedding, Cruise told GQ, "We're kind of looking at late summer, early fall."

A REGULAR MOM

Before the birth, Holmes went about business as usual, shopping solo around L.A. "She's so quiet and demure," an observer told PEOPLE of the actress (on April 15). "If she wasn't surrounded by bodyguards, you wouldn't even know she was famous."

Holmes flashed her bump March 18 as she and Cruise snuck out of a Beverly Hills gym after watching his daughter Isabella, 13, play basketball. The action scene was typical for the globetrotting couple. "I think that this kid, if I had to guess, will be a stuntperson," said JJ Abrams, Cruise's Mission: Impossible 3 director.

Going for a dip Down Under, the couple stayed in sync despite a tabloid report of a split – a story their rep called "100 percent false." "They appeared to be a happy, loving couple," Aussie broadcaster Richard Wilkins told PEOPLE. "He looked loving and attentive, and she appeared to be equally happy and in love."

SUPPORT GROUP

After announcing her pregnancy in October, Holmes debuted her bump – and previewed her parenting skills – at one of Isabella's soccer games in Beverly Hills (the couple also often watch Cruise's son Connor, 11, play baseball). The pregnancy "is a great thing for them," a source says. "They are totally happy."

FUEL FOR TWO

Holmes, in West Hollywood in February, hasn't done press for her new movie, Thank You for Smoking – perhaps because she's been too busy prepping for motherhood. She told Access Hollywood she and Cruise had started putting together a baby room, and confessed, "I'm learning how to knit."

ISLAND PARADISE

At the Le Taha'a resort in French Polynesia last month, Holmes shared some quality time with Connor and Isabella. "She almost seems born for motherhood," says her Dawson's Creek costar Oliver Hudson. "She's a nurturer. She's got mother qualities a lot of girls her age don't have. She wouldn't be having a baby if she wasn't ready."

On Dec. 15, Cruise threw Holmes a 27th birthday party, complete with balloons and stuffed giraffes, at New York City's FAO Schwarz toy store. "She found her happiness," says a Holmes pal. "She's going to be a mother at 27. She has everything she wants."

HOLIDAY ON ICE

Later that night, the party moved to Central Park's Wollman Rink, where they had the ice to themselves. Holmes was "beaming," says a bartender at the Post House restaurant, where the couple dined before the bash. "Pregnancy doesn't treat every woman well, but it suits her."

MIAMI STYLE

After their New York City celebration, the pair flew to Miami, where they shared a stage with married pals Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (Cruise's Collateral costar). When will Cruise and Holmes, who have been engaged since June, tie the knot themselves? Most likely "in the summer or early fall," Cruise told Barbara Walters.

MOTHERS DAY

In December, Holmes shopped with mom Kathleen (pictured), dad Marty and Cruise's mother, Mary Lee South, at Barney's New York in Manhattan. Despite the distance, Holmes's Toledo-based parents "are staying in close contact with her, and they are positive and loving," says a family friend. "That's how they are."

In Las Vegas in January, the beaming parents-to-be chatted up Ellen DeGeneres at a promotional event. When the couple appeared on her talk show that month, they promised to name their child Ellen (Dellen if it's a boy) after DeGeneres offered her babysitting services.

IN HER SHOES

Proving pregnancy hasn't cooled her heels, Holmes shoe shopped with fellow famous mom Victoria Beckham at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills in January. Holmes already has a head start on her little one's footwear: Cruise's War of the Worlds costar Dakota Fanning, 11, says she sent the couple "little baby Uggs."

BRIGHT FUTURE

Boy or girl, Cruise and Holmes's child will be welcomed by delighted parents (in Rome last year). "That baby is going to have a good life, because of the good, caring people that (Tom and Katie) are," says Cruise's pal, King of Queens star Leah Remini. "That baby is going to be very, very loved."

Bella is an artist who sells her work online

Isabella Jane Cruise — or Bella Kidman Cruise , as she is currently known — was born on Dec. 22, 1992 in Miami, Florida. The  Daily Mail reported that she was the third child of a fellow Scientologist who was married with two children but unable to support another. After making a connection with the superstar couple through the church, Bella was adopted by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman , who would divorce by the time she was 8 years old.

In a 1999 interview, Cruise talked about what his children might do in the future. "I don't know if Bella will be an actress. Right now, she says she wants to be a bear when she grows up. Connor wants to be a pilot, and I've been taking him up with me in my plane since his second birthday" (via the Daily Mail). 

Both children have largely stayed out of the limelight, particularly since becoming adults. Bella, who is nearly 30 years old as of this writing, is an artist who has an Instagram account dedicated primarily to her creative pursuits. Recently, she made a rare public appearance hosted by rocker Courtney Love to celebrate 30 years since the release of Hole's album, "Pretty On The Inside." Bella was photographed next to a piece of her own artwork that was on display at the event. On her  website , she sells tote bags, T-shirts, pins, and prints of her original work.

Bella lives a modest lifestyle in England with her husband

"She's very mysterious. I don't know why she's chosen Croydon, poor child," is how one of her neighbors characterized the very private life of Bella Kidman Cruise since she moved to the U.K. city in 2017 (per the  Mirror UK ). Despite having parents who are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Kidman Cruise lives a quiet and unassuming life (reportedly without their financial support) in the London suburb with her husband, Max Parker, an IT consultant. "Bella lives just outside London. You know, she really feels more English. We lived there for 'Eyes Wide Shut,' 'Mission Impossible,' and 'The Portrait of a Lady,'" Nicole Kidman told Vanity Fair in 2019. "They both had English accents when they were little."

Kidman Cruise and Parker married in September 2015 in a ceremony that wasn't attended by the groom's or the bride's parents. "We didn't go, but we knew all about it. We stayed away; we didn't want the media circus," Parker's mother told the Daily Mail when asked why she and her husband weren't present at the event. As for the bride's mother, who was in London at the time of the nuptials, Kidman Cruise told the outlet that their relationship was fine despite her absence. Tom Cruise's no-show was blamed on his work schedule. 

Parker, who takes public transportation to work, said shortly after their marriage, "I'm still a regular guy." Regarding her husband, Kidman Cruise said, "I'm very lucky."

Bella reportedly has a tumultuous relationship with her mom

Despite Bella Kidman Cruise's recent inclusion of her mother's last name into her own name, and her  recently liking some of her mom's Instagram posts, the status of their relationship is still largely a mystery. Shortly after her marriage to Max Parker, Kidman Cruise told the  Daily Mail , "Of course [we talk], they're my parents. ... Anyone who says otherwise is full of s**t." Life & Style also reported that the rift between the two was on the mend as of 2018, when a source told them, "Nicole is thrilled that Bella has paid tribute to her by naming her clothing line BKC. She's supportive of Bella's career move and really excited for her!"

RadarOnline , however, reported as recently as 2019 that Kidman's relationships with her eldest children suffered when they chose to follow their father into Scientology. "They have made choices to be Scientologists. It's our job as a parent to always offer unconditional love," said the Oscar-winning actress. In her book, "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology," actress and former Scientologist Leah Remini describes an interaction that occurred in 2006 between her and Kidman Cruise after Tom Cruise's marriage to Katie Holmes. Remini says she asked Kidman Cruise if she had seen her mother lately and was told that, "Our mother is a f*****g SP," which in Scientology speak means "suppressive person," someone the church demands be cut from the member's life (per Vogue ).

In 2010, Nicole Kidman spoke about her eldest children to Hello! Magazine (via  Vogue ), saying "they live with Tom, which was their choice. I'd love them to live with us, but what can you do?" With their father as the custodial parent, both children deepened their ties to his controversial religion and are active members of the church. 

The Underground Bunker , which reports regularly on Scientology's inner workings, published a 2019 email featuring Bella Kidman Cruise's own words. She said, in part, "We all need to do this. It's hard work. It's a lot of effort. It's a few meltdowns and running to the bathroom to have a mini episode, but it is worth everything because you will get through. This is a gift to yourself and so many others." According to a former member, the email likely indicates that Kidman Cruise is now a qualified auditor in the organization. According to the Scientology website , the goal of auditing is to "restore beingness and ability."

"Like Tom, they've become Scientology royalty," a source recently told OK! Magazine  of the two children.  Connor Cruise also lives a very private life and has reportedly been punished by the organization in the past for partaking in forbidden activities, like drinking and vaping. Currently, he resides in Clearwater, Florida, home of the church's global headquarters. According to a former member, he is being groomed to become a "perfect Scientologist" (per RadarOnline ).

Young Connor Cruise pursued a few different career paths before settling into his current culinary-related interests (per Hollywood Life ). As a child, he acted in a couple of films, including "Seven Pounds," which starred Will Smith, and the 2012 remake of "Red Dawn." Indeed, a scroll through Cruise's grid shows him posing with a huge variety of deep-sea catches, including a grouper, a yellowfin, and an amberjack, to name just a few. Connor Cruise has recently expanded his social media presence to showcase his love of all things meat-related. The aspiring food influencer announced on his original Instagram account that he was launching a second account dedicated to his love of grilling. "After many friends telling me, I have finally decided to start a food IG @connorsmeatshack with my bestie @kimj526. Give it a follow if you like backyard steaks, bourbon, chicken, or really whatever we are feeling like that day," he posted.

Cruise began posting on @connorsmeatshack in 2021. The content consists largely of close-ups and short videos of him in what appears to be a backyard location cooking on a Traeger pellet grill, a black charcoal Weber grill, and a large black griddle (per Hollywood Life ). One  video shows Cruise cooking a ribeye steak over charcoal with a caption that says, "Internal temp is dealers [sic] choice, but we aim for 120-122 post rest! (Don't you DARE say well done!)."

Suri Cruise is estranged from her father

Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in November 2006 after what appeared to be a whirlwind romance. Suri Cruise, who was born in April of that same year, attended her parents' wedding along with her siblings, Bella Kidman Cruise and Connor Cruise. Of his biological daughter's birth, Cruise said to Deborah Roberts on "20/20" that "it was everything that we wanted it to be ... it was spiritual. It was powerful. It was indescribable. A source told Us Magazine in 2018 that Cruise could see Suri, as he was given visitation rights for up to 10 days a month, but that "he chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist."

Suri seems to be following in her parents' footsteps

By all accounts, Suri Cruise has led a fairly insulated life since her parents' split. That said, she seems to be brimming with talent — at least when it comes to singing. Mom Katie Holmes recently tapped her teenage daughter to sing "Blue Moon" for the soundtrack of her film, "Alone Together," which she wrote, directed, and stars in. Cruise's version of the classic song plays over the opening credits and is clear evidence that she has some pipes.

Suri has always been a fashionista

Already considered a style icon, Cruise has inspired several fan accounts dedicated to her fashion choices. In 2013, Us Magazine  credited the then 6-year-old for influencing several looks worn by none other than Catherine, Princess of Wales.

As a child, Cruise was known to sport fancy dresses with full skirts in bold colors and patterns. She was often seen wearing headbands or bows and carrying accessories ranging from purses to stuffed animals to dolls. Suri's life is very different without the influence of Scientology

The early years of Suri Cruise's life included being photographed regularly by the paparazzi whenever she was out with her famous parents, but that all changed after her mom, Katie Holmes, divorced her father, Tom Cruise , and they went to live a more private life in New York (per Style ). 

Apparently alarmed at what Scientology had in store for her daughter as she grew older, Holmes sprung the divorce on Cruise. The two were said to be at odds over Suri's imminent attendance at the New Village Leadership Academy, which was founded by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith (per the  Independent ). The school, which claimed to be secular, was, according to ex-teachers, exactly the opposite. "There's no question about it, the New Village Leadership Academy was a Scientology school," said Dr. Mariappan Jawaharlal, who taught there from 2008 to 2010 (per The U.S. Sun ).

Since their move to New York, it has been reported that Holmes enrolled her daughter in Avenues The World School, where she wears a school uniform and is afforded no special treatment despite her family's status. According to E! News , the school offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes language immersion and courses in humanities, literacy, math, sciences, arts, and physical education.

Adorable 'Jerry Maguire' star Jonathan Lipnicki opens up about anxiety, bullying

Twenty years ago, the spiky-haired, bespectacled Jonathan Lipnicki totally upstaged Tom Cruise and Renée Zellweger in "Jerry Maguire."

But Lipnicki was only 6 when he made his film debut and as he's revealing now that working as a child actor came with high costs.

As he explained on Instagram Tuesday, he was "relentlessly" bullied and called a "has-been" as a child. The frequent bullying contributed to his panic attacks and anxiety as a young man.

All The Alleged Drama Surrounding Tom Cruise's Child Support For Suri Coming To An End

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' whirlwind relationship was the topic on everyone's lips when the couple started dating in April 2005. After a very public courtship and engagement, they welcomed their first and only child, Suri Cruise, in April 2006 and subsequently tied the knot in November of that year. Unfortunately, the couple announced the end of their relationship in 2012, and their divorce was finalized the same year. As the end of Cruise's child support agreement approached, rumors started swirling that Holmes and her daughter would essentially run out of money once Cruise stopped paying. Gossip ramped up when a source claimed that Holmes was scrambling to find work again to increase her income.

Rumors Started That Holmes Was Actively Looking For Work As The Child Support Ran Out

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's divorce in 2012 was a shock to dedicated "TomKat" fans, but it also resulted in a rocky relationship for Cruise and his daughter, Suri , who became estranged. Holmes' Lawyer Debunked The Rumors

Fans were concerned when rumors spread that Katie Holmes was frantically looking for acting roles as Tom Cruise's child support payments were coming to an end. Holmes' legal representation quickly shut down the speculation. Holmes herself never publicly commented on the source's claims that she was facing a tenuous future, but her attorney, Jonathan W. Wolfe, released a statement that set the record straight.

"The story is riddled with falsehoods," Wolfe explained to RadarOnline , referencing the source's claims in the In Touch article. "One would hope there would be more newsworthy items to cover, and publications would avoid reporting as 'facts' claims from anonymous sources peddling such obvious misrepresentations."

Holmes has continued to work since her divorce with Cruise and after she became a mother to Suri. Over the years, Holmes has appeared in various projects, including "Rare Objects" and "CODA." She's also ventured into other areas of show business like producing, using her talents on "All We Had" and "Alone Together." It seems her hard work has paid off, as of 2023, Holmes' personal net worth sits at $25 million -- which is likely plenty keep her going when the child support runs out.
