THE MICHIGAN ONE ROOM SCHOOLHOUSE ASSOCIATION

Survey of michigan one-room schoolhouses.

It is estimated that at one time there were over 7,200 one-room schools in Michigan, and approximately 7,000 of those have been found and documented on our website by Michigan One Room Schoolhouse Association (MORSA) founding board member Suzanne Daniel. Our goal is to continue her work and find them all.

Please, feel free to search for the schools you know and to search for schoolhouse museums.

2024 MORSA FALL CONFERENCE

The 2024 Conference will be held on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 at the James E. Bonine House (Pictured below) located at 18970 M-60, Vandalia, MI 49095 and Brownsville #1 School (Cass County).

We are presenting an unique collaboration at the MORSA Fall Conference in Vandalia, MI. MORSA will be joining the members of the UGRRSCC (Underground Railroad Society of Cass County) The county was the nexus of two underground railroad routes used by Freedom Seekers during the pre-Civil War era.

Local members have been instrumental in the effort to preserve the stories and structures of the era. Four sites comprise the centerpiece: the James E. Bonine House, the James E. Bonine Carriage House, the Stephen Bogue House, and the Brownsville School.

The school is believed to be one of the oldest integrated schools in the state; providing education for the children of those seeking freedom from its opening in the 1840's until its closure in the 1950's.

The conference attendees will meet at the James E. Bonine House for the program. Jim Cameron, President of the Michigan Oral History Association will be the keynote speaker. Jim is a board member of the Historical Society of Michigan and a retired Saline High School history teacher. Guests will tour the UGRR sites, culminating with a visit to the Brownsville School.

Foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the one-room schoolhouses in Michigan.

Encourage and stimulate the collection, preservation, and interpretation of Michigan's one-room school houses through conferences, newsletters, awards, consulting services, resources, and related historical activities.

Coordinate an inventory of all one-room school houses in Michigan through correspondence, survey forms, photography, and research.

Coordinate and further the programs of other historical societies and historians as they relate to one-room schoolhouses and act as a state-wide communication network.

Cooperate with appropriate individuals, organizations, and institutions on the local, regional, and state level in projects and activities which will promote and sustain interest in the history of one-room schoolhouses.

Larry Schlack, Former President of MORSA

In 1993 the Michigan One-Room Schoolhouse Association (MORSA) was founded at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in Ypsilanti. The founding was a joint effort of the Historical Society of Michigan and the College of Education at EMU. The organization does not promote a return to one-room schooling, but it rather seeks to foster understanding of and appreciation for Michigan's remaining one-room schools and the important role that they played in the history of education in Michigan. A further purpose of MORSA is to stimulate and encourage the preservation and interpretation of Michigan's one-room schoolhouses through conferences, newsletters, awards, consulting services, and related historical activities. An annual conference is held each year at which sessions on restoring schools, researching history of buildings, and acquiring furniture and artifacts for restored schools are attended by participants from all over the state. At a popular session titled simply "Stories and Reminiscences," those who attended or taught in a country school tell tales of what it really was like. The annual conference is held at a different location each year and always features a restored schoolhouse. A major activity of MORSA is the ongoing statewide survey of one-room schoolhouses. A county-by-county directory is in preparation detailing location, condition, and current use of buildings. The survey is housed at the Grand Rapids Public Library. Twice a year MORSA publishes the Slate, a newsletter devoted to items about restored schools and historical reminiscences about life in country schools. The association maintains a Web site at www.miorsa.com

Cape cod museums, mashpee one room schoolhouse.

Where is Cape Cod’s Smallest Historic One-Room Schoolhouse? It is in Mashpee!

Mashpee’s historical gem sits in the heart of Mashpee Center across from Town Hall at the intersection of Route 130 and Great Neck Road North and is open to the public, free of charge, every Monday from 11:00am – 2:00pm from Memorial Day until Indigenous People Day in October.

It is the 1831 One-Room Schoolhouse. Come take a tour, learn about Mashpee history, see some of the early educational artifacts, take part in an 1850 classroom and write with your quill and ink pen and on your slate board. Originally located in South Mashpee, the historic dwelling served as a schoolhouse until 1901, as a chapel (Ockway Chapel), library and the location of important pieces of Wampanoag history with the preaching of Blind Joe Amos and William Apess.

It was also the site where the Mashpee Wampanoags signed what amounted to a Declaration of Independence. They wrote “all men are born free and equal” and declared that they would act against further encroachment by white settlers; 102 Wampanoag women and men, signed that Declaration of Independence in the school- house, which later led to some basic rights for the Wampanoags to govern themselves.

The schoolmaster or schoolmarm will welcome you each Monday throughout the summer to tour through this important piece of Mashpee history. So, come and visit and go back to school in early Mashpee; don’t be late, however, as for every five minutes you are late, you have to stay after school one hour.

Those unable to make the Monday openings can also schedule a tour on another day by contacting schoolmaster DeSorgher at [email protected] or by calling 508-314-2605 to work out a time for a tour.

One-room schoolhouse tour.

Local residents are invited to take a trip back in time this weekend to learn how students in the early days of Marietta and Washington County received an education.

The One-room Schoolhouses, Cemeteries and Museum Tour is part of the celebration of the 227th anniversary of the founding of Marietta and the Northwest Territory. Schools which date back to the early 1800s will be open on the self-guided tour Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“There are so many neat schoolhouses in the area and this fit into what we are doing (for the anniversary),” said Jean Yost, with the Marietta Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. “There is a tremendous amount of people interested in preserving the history of these places.”

Yost explained that prior to the Ordinance of 1787, education was a luxury for the wealthy. After the Congress of the Confederation passed the ordinance, one-room schoolhouses popped up in communities all over the territory.

“Some of these townships had two, three and four schools,” he said.

A few of those old one-room institutions of learning will be open for the public to tour:

Christy School was built around 1900, used by grades first through eighth until 1938. It was restored by the Ken Pottmeyer family in 2000.

Round Bottom School, which could date as far back as 1795 according to information from the SAR, is being renovated by Waterford Boy Scouts with assistance from Waterford Township Trustees, the Lower Muskingum Historical Society, Lang Masonry and Haessley Hardwoods. The adjoining Round Bottom Cemetery is home to the gravesites of Revolutionary War soldiers John Beach, Abel Sherman, Benjamin Shaw and Peter Shaw and of early pioneer settlers Benjamin Dana, Allen Devol, David Wilson and Daniel Story.

Strait Run School is located on Buell Island in Lowell and was constructed in 1860. It features furnishings of the period and has undergone recent renovations.

Gravel Bank School in Warren Township was constructed circa 1915 and is currently used and maintained by the local Boy Scout Troop. The adjacent Gravel Bank Cemetery holds the resting places of Revolutionary War soldiers. Gravel Bank will be open to tour from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Tunnel School was constructed in 1880 and is currently undergoing restoration by the Warren Township Historical Society.

“We are in the process of refurbishing and, as an Eagle Scout project, a young man is painting and helping with renovating (the school),” said Hugh Coffman, a member of the Warren Township Historical Society. “This is one of our main projects … we were fortunate to have six sets of original windows that were refurbished and put back in place … we have some original student desks and a chalkboard.”

Coffman said the school opened around 1880 and held first through eighth grades. It closed in 1953 and Harry Vickers had been the teacher for its last decade of use as a school.

“All of the schoolhouses in Warren Township closed in 1953 and the students then went to Warren Elementary,” Coffman said.

Volunteers will be at each of the schools to answer questions, according to Yost. Coffman said he would gladly field any questions related to Tunnel School. He can be reached at (740) 374-6718.

Concert in Moscow 1993

Samvel Gasparov , a movie director, tells the story about MJ' show in Moscow in 1993:

one room school house tour

'I heard about Michael Jackson for the first time back in the 70's. I even knew some of his songs, but I never was a fan. When I worked as a truck driver, I used to listen to Georgian music. Later, when I went to college, I grew to like Joe Dassin, Charles Aznavour, Tom Jones, and Engelbert Humperdinck. But I always knew about Jackson, and I knew that he was a good singer. In the early 90's my dream was to make a movie called "Run brother, run". American filmmakers expressed some interest in the script, and in 1992 I went to Romania where we rented a foundation. As it happened, Michael Jackson was giving a show in Bucharest at that time, and I was introduced to his producer Marcel Avram by one of our mutual friends. Marcel asked me to help them tape Michael's concert, and I did what I could. It was a pleasure. The performance left me stunned. Jackson impressed me very much – he was a genius, that's no question. I was personally introduced to him, and I remember shaking his cool pale hand. On the second day at dinner I told Avram about my wish to make a movie in the USA and my need for money. I already had an offer for five movies and lodging in the US by then. "I like you", Avram said. "If you want, we can bring Michael to Moscow. Then you can organize a show and make some money." I thought it would be cool, but I honestly didn't believe it was possible. But soon after that Avram sent his people to Moscow in order to check out Dessa, the company I headed at the time. It was one of the first Russian private companies created for the purpose of movie making, and I had some good folks on my team.

Suddenly the project came to life. Money was pushed to the background in my mind. I was full of enthusiasm, I wanted to bring that joyful event to people – after all, it was the first time a big Star was going to visit Russia. Since the visit of Avram's delegation and till September 1993 we were busy with preparations. It was my first experience in show business, and I couldn't imagine that it would be that hard and unpredictable. I thought that all showbiz "sharks" would support me and help me with that project, but it turned out the other way round – they threw obstacles in my way and tried to prevent the show from happening. We felt that our efforts were not appreciated. We even got phone calls with threats. And we got attacked by the media: they wrote that I was the king of the liquor industry and the head of the Chechen mafia. They said I was organizing the show in order to sell vodka on the stadium. It was a nightmare! They also wrote garbage about Jackson – that he was a pedophile, and that I was going to bring not him, but his impersonator who would lip synch to his songs. But all this crap only turned us on. We decided that we would make the show happen no matter what.

one room school house tour

On September 15, 1993 Michael postpones his flight out of Moscow, Russia, and instead goes to visit a hospital for mentally challenged children there, who rejoice at seeing him and fight for his attention. One of his aides says that the singer has asked for one of the children to be flown to America for care and treatment which Jackson will pay for. The singer holds a few children in his arms and on his lap, comforts and plays with them and wishes to entertain them: “I’d like to sing with them. We all know a song together”, he says, visibly emotional. He also visits children in a nearby orphanage, who will sing a song to him in Russian, turning him – the ultimate performer, into an attentive spectator.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

We walked over the bridge where I got a better photo of the Kremlin to enter metro station to travel the one stop back to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. This cathedral has a fascinating story.  It is Moscow's largest Orthodox cathedral.  It was built between 1839-1883 as a memorial to those who fell fighting Napoleon's army in the War of 1812.

At its entry, the marble walls are covered with inscribed names of those whose lives were lost.  For more than a century, it was the city's largest single structure, dominating the city skyline.  In 1931, a few seconds demolished what had taken 50 years to build, following Stalin's orders.

The marble from the church and other valued materials and objects were stripped and removed to be used elsewhere, such as for creating art in the Metro stations.  During Khrushchev's time, one of the world's largest outdoor swimming pools was built.

In recent years, the decision was made to rebuild the Cathedral; this time it took only 5 years at a cost of $150 million.  While the city provided most of the funding, when the decision to rebuild was announced, the rubles poured in from the general population.  Once again, photos were not allowed, but my friend bought a booklet, and she kindly let me use it so you can see its elaborate interior.

What you probably DO know about this cathedral is that the Russian punk band Pussy Riot performed a protest concert inside the church in 2012, resulting in their arrest and jail time for 3 of its members.

After my friend selected her icon from the gift shop, it was time to bid our favorite Muscovite guide farewell. Our Moscow guide has restored my faith in her generation.  So wise and compassionate she is.  She was extremely perceptive about our preferences and needs.

As my friend noted to me last night after we got back to our room, there wasn't a problem our guide didn't solve with calm and timely effectiveness.  After she presented both of us with gifts tied with satin ribbon, she walked us across the plaza in front of the cathedral to our waiting cab.  She told my friend that she reminded her of her own "Baba" and that she would send my friend a picture of her to show the resemblance.

Even with this affection on her part toward my friend, I know our guide would have delivered the same excellent guide service to us, topped with abundant grace and sensitivity.  These characteristics are a part of her inner soul.  Our positive regard of Moscow is because of our guide.
