Chaka Khan is the latest woman to be inducted into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. She is a global music star that has served as an inspiration for generations of singers, songwriters, recording artists, storytellers, and musicians.

Aside from being a singer, she is a distinguished songwriter, producer, visual artist, author, actress, humanitarian, activist, and mother.

While her birth certificate may say Yvette Marie Stevens, in many ways, Chaka Khan is one of a kind.

She is a trendsetter, a fighter, and a survivor. She redefined pop, soul, jazz, and funk, and has helped mold the contemporary music landscape into what it is today.

Although Chaka has affectionately been referred to as the “Queen of Funk” and is also known as the “Empress of Funk, Rock and Soul,” she prefers to ditch the genre limiting monikers. After all, she has the rare ability to sing in eight different music genres, these include R&B/soul, pop, rock, gospel, country, world music, dance, and classical music.

Chaka has developed a vast and loyal international fan base, and she has performed in six continents.

Humble beginnings

She grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and she was the eldest of four siblings. In her teenage years, Chaka and her sister, Bonnie, formed a vocal group, The Crystalettes, with two school friends.

Chaka subsequently sang with several local bands before she became the lead singer for the band Ask Rufus, which would become Rufus, a group that would churn out hit after hit.

She learned to trust her heart and instincts and follow her dreams from an early age. She caught the attention of Stevie Wonder, who wrote Rufus’ debut single “Tell Me Something Good.”

This song earned Chaka and Rufus their first Grammy Award in the “Best R&B Vocal Performance by A Duo, Group or Chorus” category; moreover, it became a Top 5 hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and the Billboard R&B songs charts.

Rufus entertained audiences with sold-out concerts, and their smash hits include the ubiquitous “Ain’t Nobody,” “Once You Get Started,” “Sweet Thing,” “Do You Love What You Feel,” and “You Got the Love,” which was co-penned by Chaka and Ray Parker Jr.

A Landmark Year

2023 is a landmark year for Chaka. She celebrates her 50th anniversary in the music business, as well as her 70th birthday.

An induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, class of 2023, solidifies her legacy as a musical powerhouse. With the once-in-a-lifetime performance at the ceremony, a dynamic medley of hits alongside H.E.R., Common, and Sia, stands as a testament to her generational influence within popular culture. She was bestowed the “Musical Excellence Award.” The prestigious acknowledgement recognizes artists, musicians, songwriters, and producers whose originality and influence have made an impact.

“The Musical Excellence Award means a lot to me,” she said. “This meant even more to me than getting in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, especially just to have the words ‘musical excellence’ attached to my name.”

Earlier this spring, on March 29, 2023, Chaka made a special appearance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as part of “Women’s History Month,” where she celebrated her golden anniversary in the music industry, and her 70th birthday. Five of her outfits from her music career are displayed in the “Legends of Rock” exhibit.

For over five decades, Chaka has remained relevant as one of the mightiest and most influential voices in modern music. Her artistic work has stood the test of time, and it continues to inspire fellow recording artists, musicians, and fans alike.

Chaka possesses a voice of seductive fire and sweet smoke. At the age of 18, she came to prominence with the innovative multiracial funk and rock group Rufus. Back in the 1970s, Chaka was the group’s secret weapon, and she was both fearless and feminine.

Rufus is credited for being “funky, sexy and soul,” and they subsequently “made an indelible mark on a generation of music.”

‘I’m Every Woman’ and other solo hits

“I’m Every Woman” was her debut single from her solo album “Chaka,” which she released in 1978. It was Khan’s first hit outside of her recordings with the group Rufus. Her signature song “I’m Every Woman” is more than just a hit single and Grammy-nominated tune, it’s a lifestyle filled with positivity.

As a solo recording artist, her other hits include “Clouds,” “What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me,” “Through the Fire” and “I Feel For You,” all of which have become pop, R&B/soul, and adult contemporary classics in their own right.

Speaking of “I Feel For You,” which was written by Prince, it was her rendition that catapulted her to the stratosphere. It was one of the most popular songs of the ‘80s, and it made history by becoming the first R&B tune to feature a rap vocal (performed by Grandmaster Melle Mel).

She also lent her powerhouse vocals on two of the biggest Grammy-winning songs of 1986: Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” and Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.”

Chaka: The frequent collaborator

Aside from being one of the world’s most distinctive artists, she is known as a perennial musical explorer and song stylist. She has collaborated with such

diverse artists as Prince, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige, and Ariana Grande to George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones, and Miles Davis.

Her collaborative spirit has birthed so many musical gems. One that has become a musical trivia topic is that in 1999 Chaka’s voice became the voice for the theme song of the children’s television show “Reading Rainbow.”

Chaka has also collaborated on countless film soundtracks over the years including “Love Me Still” from Spike Lee’s film, Clockers , “My Funny Valentine” on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, “Missing You,” from the Set It Off soundtrack, and her Grammy Award winning performance of the Marvin Gaye classic, “What’s Goin’ On,” from the documentary film Standing in the Shadows of Motown .

Chaka: The stage and theater performer

In 1995, Chaka made her theater debut on London’s iconic West End, where she starred in “Mama I Want to Sing.”

Seven years later, in 2002, she headlined “Signed, Sealed Delivered,” the musical based on the music and lyrics of Stevie Wonder. Then, in 2008, she made her way to Broadway, where she stepped into the leading role of Sophia in Oprah Winfrey’s Tony-nominated musical “The Color Purple.”

10-time Grammy Winner

With music and streaming sales in excess of 100 million units, Chaka’s mantel holds 10 Grammy Awards (and she has been nominated 22 times, three of which were as a band member of Rufus), and she is consistently listed as a musical influence for generations of young artists, especially women.

“It is lovely to be recognized by your peers, where they think you are doing a good enough job that you deserve a Grammy. It would be nice, however, if that would affect my pay grade,” Chaka said with a sweet laugh.

Influences

One of her biggest musical influences, the late but great Aretha Franklin proclaimed Chaka as a “premier vocalist.” Another one of her greatest musical inspirations, Miles Davis, paid her what she considers to be a huge compliment when he acknowledged that “she sings like my horn.”

Chaka was also inspired by the legend ary Sarah Vaughan, as well as folk rock star Joni Mitchell and R&B/soul pioneer St evie Wonder.

Modern artists such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Lizzo, and Sam Smith have all cited Chaka as a musical influence.

An eclectic discography

In her respected and prolific career, Chaka has released 22 studio albums, 10 of which were certified gold and platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). 10 of her singles have catapulted to the top spot on the Billboard charts.

Her recorded music has produced well over 2,000 catalog song placements.

Her latest single “Woman Like Me” was released in July of 2022, and it raises awareness on self-respect for all women and encourages them to live in their own truths.

“Life inspires my music. Love, breakups, and almost everything in life,” she said about her music and songwriting inspirations.

The entrepreneur

Aside from being an entertainer, she is also an entrepreneur. She is known for “Chakalates,” her gourmet chocolates, which she launched in 2004, as well as Khana Sutra, a fragrance collection, which includes candles, as well as room and linen sprays.

The Chaka Khan Foundation

In 1999, she founded the Chaka Khan Foundation, whose mission is to educate, inspire, and empower women and children to reach their full potential.

It featured a variety of educational programs and initiatives to help women and children at risk, especially children with difficult backgrounds and autism.

She is now relaunching her foundation and focusing initiatives on mental health and wellbeing.

With this foundation, she is able to make a huge difference, and help people, especially children, on a higher scale. She is a firm believer that “the arts, music, and mental health are all very important, especially for our youth.”

In return, Chaka feels that “giving is better than receiving,” so she is happiest when she is doing something for somebody else.

Chaka: The bestselling author

Chaka’s life story and her music career was profiled in her autobiography “Through the Fire,” which was published in 2003 via Rodale Books.

Her memoir “Through the Fire” is a candid account of the trials and tribulations she went through in her life and music career. She is not afraid to be raw and vulnerable and opens up about her substance abuse, where she offers optimism and encouragement for her fans and readers. She refers to “walking through life” as a metaphor of “walking through the fire” accordingly.

Dr. Chaka Khan: Honorary Doctorate Recipient

In December of 2004, Chaka was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music from the Berklee College of Music in Boston for her services and accomplishments in contemporary music and for her philanthropy.

“A lot of kids get sidetracked and feel like they should put on some booty shorts, and do the song, and that’s sad. That’s one of the things that bothers me and makes me sad about this business. I always also remind kids to go to college because they are always hiring at the post office, and somebody has to work the computers,” she told young and aspiring artists.

Chaka’s Awards and Accolades

Chaka has been the recipient of countless well-deserved accolades and awards. Notable acheivements include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, the Soul Train Legend Award, the BET Lifetime Achievement Award and Triumph Award, the World Music Lifetime Achievement Award, the United Negro College Fund’s “An Evening of Stars” Tribute, and a Grammy Honors Award from the NARAS Chicago Chapter.

Her Chicago hometown also honored her with “Chaka Khan Way,” a street in her name, and Sunday, July 28, 2013, was officially declared “Chaka Khan Day.”

Personal life

Chaka has lived for a time in both London and Germany, as well as New York. She now resides in California. She is the mother of two children, daughter Indira Milini and son Damien Holland.

Chaka is a true renaissance woman who can use her music and her book as a vessel to help spread her radio energy and indomitable spirit with the rest of the globe.

“Thank you for hanging in there with me for all these years. I hope I brought somebody some joy, some truth, and some love,” she told her dedicated fans.

Kirk Franklin

journey morning show

With a celebrated career spanning 30 years, Kirk Franklin continues to make a profound mark on the music industry. The eclectic 19-time GRAMMY Award-winning artist, songwriter, music producer, and television and film producer has successfully bridged the gap between gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and pop as he continues to take his career and craft to new levels. It’s no doubt that Franklin’s God-given talent and deep faith have helped him remain the influential, relevant, and visionary he is today.

Franklin is back with his 14 th and most personal and reflective studio album yet, titled Father’s Day. The album, slated to be released in early October from his RCA-distributed label, Fo Yo Soul Recordings, is a collection of 10 inspirational, beautifully curated tracks (all written by Franklin) with the constant theme of love, faith, and resilience flowing through them. Father’s Day will be accompanied by a short film that will be released a few days before the album and provide a deeper context to what Father’s Day means for Franklin.

Making the album wasn’t exactly easy for the artist. While creating Father’s Day , the man Franklin grew up thinking was his father (whom he didn’t have the best relationship with) passed away, and shortly after that, he discovered his real biological father after a series of DNA tests. This was one of the most traumatic experiences Franklin had to go through, and someone else in the same position might have faltered. But for Franklin, who had his fair share of ups and downs throughout his life, his music and heavenly father God helped him get through this latest storm and also helped him come up with the name of the album. “I have no idea how I was able to finish this album with all that was going on at the time. But I know that I would have been in an even worse troubling state if I wasn’t working on it. Father’s Day gave me an escape and an emotional outlet,” he admits.

The lead single, “All Things,” released in May 2023 with an official video, is a bold, upbeat, soul-stirring track that is a reminder that God is what makes everything and all things possible. The second single, “Try Love,” which will be released in late August, is an uplifting song with a rousing chorus that goes: “ This is your day love/This is the day that you can’t give away love/ I’ve been waiting all day love/Waiting for your embrace love,” before switching gears midway into a funky R&B throwback. “Needs” is an authentic, comforting gospel ballad that delves into the need of God in one’s life. Gospel royalty such as Chandler Moore, Tori Kelly, Jonathan McReynolds, and Jekalyn Carr join Franklin on the exhilarating track “Again,” while Kelontae Gavin and Maranda Curtis lend their vocals to its sequel “Again & Again,” with both songs rejoicing in how no matter what, God will continuously move mountains for you. Franklin closes out the album with “Somebody’s Son” a deeply moving and touching song where he candidly expresses the heartbreak and pain he’s felt throughout his life (especially most recently) due      to the familial trauma he’s endured.

Franklin hopes the album resonates with people and gives them permission to accept the highs and lows of life while still understanding that God is always there for them. “For many people, the image of God is Him always keeping score of their wrongdoings. So there’s some fear when it comes to their relationship with God,” he says. “I hope this album is a stripped-down, honest conversation about the difficulty of the life journey and how life can be messy, nuanced, and a matter of trial and error even for those who subscribe to faith. But it’s all wrapped in a bow of love, and that love doesn’t always make sense, but is always constant.”

Since bursting onto the scene in 1993 with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album Kirk Franklin & The Family, Franklin has blessed the world with hit after hit, a bevy of award-winning, lauded albums (in addition to multiple GRAMMYs, he has garnered nearly 40 Stellar Awards and is a 22-time Dove Award winner), and a plethora of epic collaborations with artists such as Mariah Carey, Lil’ Baby, Chance the Rapper, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Khalid, and Michael Jackson. His most recent album, Kingdom Book One (Tribl Records, Fo Yo Soul Entertainment, and RCA Inspiration), a live, collaboration album with the gospel group Maverick City Music, was recorded at the Everglades Correctional Institution in Miami-Dade, Florida, to raise awareness on the injustice of mass incarceration and debuted at number two on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart and the Top Gospel Albums chart. The album also received three GRAMMY Awards, a BET Award, and NAACP Image Award. In March 2023, Franklin made history by spending 100 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Songwriters Chart and becoming the first person to reach the 100-week milestone on a songwriters chart.

In addition to his music awards and accolades, Franklin’s 2022 tour with Maverick City Music broke records as one of the highest-grossing tours in the history of gospel and Christian contemporary music. This fall, Franklin will hit the road again with The Reunion Tour, which will feature Israel Houghton, David and Tamela Mann, Tye Tribbett, and The Clark Sisters, and kick off in Boston with stops in 29 cities across the country.

Making hit records and selling out concerts isn’t the only thing Franklin has mastered. He has served as an executive producer for two popular holiday films such as Kirk Franklin’s The Night Before Christmas in 2022 and Kirk Franklin’s A Gospel Christmas in 2021 and also served as an executive producer for the BET+ television series “Kingdom Business” in 2022, which was renewed for a second season. In addition to that, Franklin and his wife, Tammy Franklin, premiered their new dating series “The One,” on TV One this past May and served as co-hosts and executive producers. Franklin is now shopping a few more projects around and plans to continue working on unscripted and scripted programming. “I’ve been very excited about being part of these projects,” says Franklin. “I still enjoy doing music, but I’m very grateful to be used by God to bring his name to the conversation and use the vehicle of entertainment to do it.”

For Kirk Franklin, his iconic songs, unforgettable verses, and undeniable showmanship have made him the star and household name he is. Still, he remains humble and extremely grateful to be blessed to share his passion for music with the world. Right now he is in the healing process, and the music gives him the strength to persevere. And yes, the past several months have been a trying time for the renowned artist, but at the same time he is excited about the release of Father’s Day . “The Lord has been super kind to me. This album is an opportunity for me to escape and an opportunity to communicate what I may not always emotionally be able to say,” he says. “This album has been a lifesaver God has blessed me with, and I am truly grateful.”

The Morning Show Season 4: Everything We Know

Season Four is officially underway!

preview for The Morning Show - Season 3 Teaser Trailer (Apple TV+)

Every product was carefully curated by an Esquire editor. We may earn a commission from these links.

So, what does that mean for our dear friends at The Morning Show ? Will Season Four bring (another!) much-needed reckoning? Or do things have to get worse before they get better? All we know for sure is that Season Four will center on Bradley and Alex’s friendship. The Morning Show is rooted in current events , and the series tracks their ability to navigate politics while working together as journalists. At the end of Season Three, Bradley faces felony charges after he admits to hiding her brother's assault of a police officer during the January 6 insurrection. The episode ends with Alex escorting Bradley to the FBI to confess, then heading back to UBA to pitch a merger with another network. Both Alex and Bradley's futures are in flux, but The Morning Show 's showrunner, Charlotte Stoudt, said they’ll stick together as the series continues.

“The show is a love story between these women,” Stoudt explained to The Hollywood Reporter . “The core of The Morning Show is their dynamic and how they change each other.” As she plans Season Four, Stoudt is determined to keep Bradley and Alex’s storylines intertwined. “I think that [their dynamic] always has to be there, absolutely. So we’ll find a way. They’ll be in the same room somehow!”

Keep reading for everything we know about Season Four of The Morning Show .

What Will Happen in Season Four of The Morning Show ?

Season Three left many stories open-ended, so the next season should be interesting, to say the absolute least. Bradley’s romance with Laura fizzled out after the January 6 debacle, so Season Four could see them reconcile or finally get some closure. Meanwhile, Cory—who was accused of grooming Bradley—was forced to leave UBA, but as we know, people rarely walk out without a fight. Of course, Paul Marks's illegal side gigs are sure to blow up soon, and we'll certainly catch up with Alex’s attempt to negotiate a merger with a rival network. No matter where Season Four heads, there will be loads of material to work with.

When asked about including current events (like the SAG-AFTRA strike or the war between Israel and Palestine) Stoudt said it’s too early to tell. “We obviously look at everything that’s going on in the world,” she explained. “Whether it’s that conflict or something else, we always try to be as thoughtful and as intentional about it as we can.”

Who Will Return in Season Four of The Morning Show?

The official cast has not been released, but we can count on Alex and Bradley’s return. As for everyone else? Well, it doesn’t sound like Stoudt plans to kill anyone off anytime soon. While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter , she explained that each character serves a purpose—and they haven't finished their respective journeys. “I think all of those people [in the show] actually have a lot more [to do],” she said. “You can turn a lot more cards for all those people. They have a lot more to do in their journey to be integrated as people.”

When Will Season Four of The Morning Show Premiere?

Unfortunately, Apple TV+ hasn't announced the premiere date. If production ramps up soon, we might be able to see Season Four by early 2025. In the meantime, you can catch up on the first three seasons on Apple TV+.

Why Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Is In For A ‘Heartbreaking’ Journey On The Morning Show, As Season 3 Tackles Women’s Issues

Apple TV+ drama continues to highlight real-world issues.

The Morning Show is finally back with Season 3 , and those with an AppleTV+ subscription are finally getting to see how Alex Levy, Bradley Jackson and the rest of the UBA gang have been surviving since COVID shut everything down at the end of Season 2 . After examining social issues like #MeToo, the pandemic, racism and the ugly inner workings of corporate America in its first two seasons, the popular drama looks to dissect women’s issues this time around, according to executive producer and director Mimi Leder , and she warns that Jennifer Aniston ’s character will face quite a tough journey.

Season 3 kicked the action into high gear pretty quickly, with the two-episode premiere launching Reese Witherspoon ’s Bradley into space aboard tech billionaire Paul Marks’ ( Jon Hamm ) shuttle and UBA being hit with a cyberattack. Alex remains frustrated with her role in the company (some things never change) and demands a larger role, discovering that Cory Ellison ( Billy Crudup ) has been scheming (really, they don’t change) with Paul about possibly buying UBA. Mimi Leder, who directed the first two episodes, said Alex will have some hills to climb this season, telling Deadline :

She wants a seat at the table, but getting that seat might cost her more than she ever imagined when Paul Marks walks into the room. So I would say there’s this real power triangle between Cory, Paul and Alex in that part of Alex’s arc. That’s the beginning of her arc, but it’s her finding her voice and finding her power. And it’s a very heartbreaking, powerful story and journey that she goes on to find that voice.

The Season 3 trailer (shown above) teases a bit of this power struggle, when a smug — yet infuriatingly entertaining — Cory refuses to close the door to Alex’s office, but I can’t help but wonder what “heartbreaking” and “powerful” events await the disgruntled anchor. Will Alex find herself in another ill-conceived romance? According to Jon Hamm, that certainly sounds like a possibility, as the actor teased that his story alongside Jennifer Aniston will be “juicy.”

How Alex fares when she goes toe-to-toe with these powerful businessmen is part of The Morning Show ’s tendency to attack real-world issues, as Mimi Leder delved into the focus of Season 3, saying:

The themes of this season were women’s agency, women’s reproductive rights, abortion rights. What are the ways in which women’s power is being challenged right now and undermined? Also…we wanted to talk about the threat of the future of journalism and the threat to it all over the world and the threat to journalists. Most notably, we wanted to speak about the state of the truth. Our show is very topical. These are all issues that are happening here.

At the onset of Season 3 we see Bradley trying to help a woman who has been providing safe abortion care to people in Texas, and it sounds like we can expect to dive deeper into that story. And in addition to Alex’s efforts to move up in the company, I’m really interested to see what appears to be an increased role from Holland Taylor’s Cybil, whose motivations have yet to be uncovered.

Another character getting some well-deserved focus already is Greta Lee’s Stella, who not only stood up to Alex for skipping out on the big shuttle launch but seems to have a past with Hyperion CEO Paul Marks.

The EP/director has me excited for all the drama that’s yet to come this season. New episodes of The Morning Show drop every Wednesday on the streaming service, and while you’re there, be sure to check out some of Apple TV+’s other best series .

Grammy-nominated artist Marcus King on his guitar being his salvation during his mental health journey: "Music is all I really had"

By Anthony Mason , Kelsie Hoffman

April 10, 2024 / 11:46 AM EDT / CBS News

Grammy-nominated musician Marcus King's new album, "Mood Swings," explores the darkest days of his mental health journey and the hope he's found through therapy and music after overcoming depression, body image issues and abandonment.

King is a fourth-generation musician whose first memory growing up in Greenville, South Carolina, was opening his dad's guitar case. For King, the guitar feels like an extension of himself.

"'Cause it was my like original safety blanket, to escape everything," he said. "Music is all I really had to provide any kind of peace and calm waters within this storm going on in my brain and in my heart."

King said his mother left when he was young, triggering abandonment issues.

"We've got a better relationship now," he said. "But that's pretty difficult for a young boy."

King then lost several family members and began to wrestle with his body image.

"My heart aches for him," King said about his younger self. "His self-confidence was so diminished by so many people."

By age 14, he started playing gigs. With his long hair and hippie outfits, King felt like a high school outcast. So he quit school his junior year.

"I got on the road as soon as I could," King said. "I just, right away, got really into the hustle of it all."

Getting started, King said he was using a pseudonym in his email to book himself and the band.

"I used a little smoke and mirror tactics," he said.

marcus-king.png

Now, the 28-year-old has built a reputation as a mesmerizing live performer, which he said is a result of throwing himself into his craft.

"I've always been deeply insecure, so I'm a little perfectionist when it comes to my art," King said. "You can't deny me if I'm the best at it."

He released three acclaimed albums leading the Marcus King Band. In 2020, he earned a Grammy nomination with his solo debut, "El Dorado."

But his demons caught up with him.

"I was just in a really rough spot. I had just gone through a really bad breakup, and I was just, I don't know how to put this. It was just a series of benders, you know, followed by, you know, deep, deep depression," he said. "I was hurting so bad that it was difficult to perform."

King was near rock bottom when he met Briley Hussey at a gig. He said she helped to save him.

"What I saw was a woman who wasn't gonna tolerate any nonsense," King said. "She made me fight for it, fight for her."

The two married last year, while King was working on his new album, "Mood Swings." King worked with legendary producer Rick Rubin on the album.

Rubin urged King to make mental health a writing partner. King said that took him into the "basement of his soul."

"There was a lot of acceptance and a lot of just reckoning with, you know, my guilt and the way that I behaved in past relationships," he said. "I'm the problem. Call is coming from inside the house."

King said for so long, he was afraid to talk about his mental health.

"I didn't want people to get the wrong impression of me, I didn't want people to say, 'Wow, this guy is just a little nuts.'"

Now, King feels blessed and "absolved," but he knows that his mental health is something he has to take day by day.

"I always say I'm in remission from depression because it comes back around," he said.

But with meditation and medication, King said he's able to keep it in check. Plus, he'll always have his music.

"I mean it's great therapy," King said. "But real therapy in addition is always best. I found that out later."

Robin Roberts' nephew helps save a life as a stem cell donor

Jeremiah Craft learned in January that he was someone's match.

When Jeremiah Craft was growing up, he watched his aunt, " Good Morning America " co-anchor Robin Roberts , undergo a lifesaving bone marrow transplant .

The stem cells used in the 2012 transplant to save Roberts' life were donated by Craft's mom, Sally-Ann Roberts , who was a perfect match for her younger sister.

The journey of the Roberts sisters was a unique one, as 70% of patients in need of a bone marrow transplant do not have a fully-matched donor in their family, according to NMDP , a non-profit organization that manages a global marrow registry.

In the majority of cases, patients must rely on donations from strangers on the NMDP registry.

PHOTO: "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts, far left, poses with her nephew, Jeremiah Craft, and her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts.

With those statistics in mind, Sally-Ann Roberts convinced Craft, at the time a teenager, to sign up for the NMDP registry, which involves sending in a simple swab of your inner cheek that can help match you to current or future patients.

"Basically, my mom 'voluntold' me to sign up, kind of like a mandatory suggestion," Craft, now 29, recalled to "GMA."

Several years later, to his surprise, Craft said he got a call that he was a match for a stranger.

Take the first step to sign up to become a bone marrow donor today. Visit my.nmdp.org/gma or text GMA to 61474 to request a swab kit.

At the time, Craft declined to participate in the transplant. According to NMDP, less than half of potential donors agree to donate when they are found to be a match, for a variety of reasons.

"Unfortunately, at the time, I just was thinking about me," Craft said of his decision. "It was acting selfishly, and I didn't heed the call."

Craft said he quickly regretted his decision, saying, "Up until this point, I was very, very sure that that was going to be the biggest mistake of my life."

In January, Craft unexpectedly got a second chance. He received a call from NMDP notifying him that he was once again a match.

"Because I've been thinking about that person every day since then, it was just impossible for me to not say yes," Craft said of his decision to become a donor.

Added his mom, Sally-Ann Roberts, "He did not hesitate. He was ready."

Once he decided to move forward, Craft underwent five days of injections to help stimulate his blood stem cells to prepare for donation day.

Craft then traveled from New York City to Houston in March to complete his donation. As is standard protocol, Craft's travel expenses were covered by NMDP.

The organization pays travel expenses and non-medical costs for all donors, as well as any medical expenses not covered by insurance, according to its website .

Robin Roberts spoke to Craft ahead of his donation day, calling him a "superhero."

"I'm proud of you," she said to her nephew.

Craft said he was "grateful to God" to have a second change at saving a life.

"I’m a regular guy trying to do the right thing for the second time," he said. "I'm just grateful to God that I can go from pretending to be a hero to growing older, learning what is important and actually saving a life."

Craft donated through peripheral blood stem cells, or PBSC, donation, a non-surgical procedure in which blood is drawn from one arm, passed through a machine that separates the blood-forming cells and then the remaining blood is returned to the other arm, according to NMDP.

PHOTO: Jeremiah Craft is pictured in March 2024 during the bone marrow donation process.

For Craft, the donation took a total of five hours, but donation times can vary.

The other method for donation is bone marrow, which takes place in a hospital and is typically a one-day procedure in which needles are used to withdraw liquid marrow from the back of the pelvic bone. The donor is typically in the hospital from early morning to late afternoon and most donors feel completely recovered within weeks, according to NMDP .

Spring is hummingbird migration season: Interactive map shows where they will be

T he great North American eclipse is behind us, flowers in the northern states are starting to bloom and all the signs of spring are here . That means hummingbirds are on the move.

Known for their long, nectar-sipping beaks and ultra-fast wing flutters, hummingbirds are only found in the Americas.

Many hummingbird species migrate north in late winter and spring after spending the cold winters in Central America or Mexico. According to the American Bird Conservancy, some hummingbirds travel up to 5,000 miles every year.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

USA TODAY has compiled bird sighting data from Project FeederWatch to show the hummingbird migration patterns. Here's what it looks like:

Tips for feeding hummingbirds

According to the National Audubon Society, native, flowering plants are the best food source for hummingbirds. But you can help it along its migration journey with a simple feeder.

Mix refined, white sugar and water in a 1:4 ratio, boil it and cool it, and put it out for the birds in feeder. Don't use any food coloring or sweetening agents, as it could harm the birds, the Audubon says.

The Audubon also recommends the following for feeding hummingbirds:

  • Empty and clean the filter once a week in cold weather, twice a week in hot weather
  • Put the feeder out about a week before the birds usually arrive in your area
  • Avoid using pesticides or dish detergent

If you're not having any luck seeing hummingbirds at your feeder, the audubon society suggests hanging it nearby red or orange tubular flower plants, which they are naturally attracted to.

Starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston , The Morning Show takes an inside look at the fictional news network UBA, including the lives of those who bring the world’s top stories to the screen and the internal politics at play.

Since premiering in 2019, the show has been a top performer on Apple TV+, earning more than 50 award nominations to date. Aniston won the SAG Award in 2020 for playing anchor Alex Levy and Billy Crudup won an Emmy Award in 2020 for his portrayal of UBA president, Cory Ellison.

Season 3 introduced Jon Hamm as billionaire Paul Marks, a corporate titan who is being courted by Cory Ellison to rescue UBA from its financial woes. While Marks and Levy develop a romantic relationship during the season that could jeopardize the deal, suspicions about Marks’ past and intentions start surfacing.

Now that season 3 has wrapped, read ahead for everything we know about season 4.

Warning: spoilers for The Morning Show season 3 ahead.

How did The Morning Show season 3 end?

Apple TV+

Following a network hack and a near acquisition by corporate titan Paul Marks, UBA’s sale to Hyperion was stopped at the last minute when Alex Levy presented a merger between UBA and NBN to the board. Alex also confronted Paul about his shady practices, from using spyware on their phones to his attempt to cover up problems with the Hyperion One rocket.

Stopping Paul was a group effort that began with a potential whistleblower, Kate (Natalie Morales), who was fired from Hyperion. Bradley, Stella (Greta Lee) and Chip (Mark Duplass) joined forces to discover what Paul was hiding and stop the sale. Alex, somewhat distracted by her relationship with Paul throughout the season, didn’t join the efforts until it was down to the wire.

Finally, Bradley and her brother, Hal, turned themselves into the FBI for their actions surrounding the Insurrection. Bradley had covered up Hal’s involvement on January 6 — with some help from Cory — by deleting footage that implicated Hal and lying to the FBI.

What is The Morning Show season 4 about?

Erin Simkin/Apple TV+

The streamer hasn’t released any information about season 4 storylines, but based on where things left off at the end of season 3, the aftermath of the merger between UBA and NBN will likely be a major plot point. Combining the two media companies raises a lot of questions about who will still have a job and which programming will survive, including UBS’s flagship morning show.

Along with the merger, the season 3 finale teased that Alex has a new role and a real seat at the table, so we could potentially see her in a powerful position within the media company.

There’s also a solid chance that the fallout from Bradley’s cover-up of her brother’s involvement in the  insurrection at the U.S. Capitol will continue to play into the storyline.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter , showrunner Charlotte Stoudt shared that the writing for season 4 has just kicked off, but fans can expect to see the consequences of season 3 play out "in every sense and for every character."

"If we asked the audience to go on that ride, then we have to honor that ride," she said.

Of course, as it has from the first season, The Morning Show will continue to draw inspiration from real-life headlines.

When will The Morning Show season 4 air?

A premiere date has not been announced, but if the current pattern of releasing a season every other year continues, we’re looking at a 2025 release for season 4. Season 1 premiered in November 2019, Season 2 in September 2021 and Season 3 in September 2023. It is possible that the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes could delay it further.

Where can I watch The Morning Show season 4?

Season 4 of The Morning Show will air exclusively on Apple TV+. Seasons 1-3 are available to stream now .

The season 4 cast hasn’t been confirmed, but Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson and Aniston’s Alex Levy should be back, especially since both stars are also executive producers on the series.

Aniston has spoken about her positive experience working on the show. “We thrive and it’s quite — dare I say it — easy,” she told Variety . “It’s such a pleasant set to be on. We love to communicate. We love to work stuff out, and we don’t just shove stuff under the rug. There’s no stone left unturned in a creative decision. We all put our heads together. There’s something so wonderful about trusting in your co-workers to know that if five people tell you look sick, then I’m gonna lay down, I’m gonna put my sword down on this one.”

Crudup’s Cory Ellison, Duplass’ Chip Black, Lee’s Stella Bak, Karen Pittman’s Mia Jordan and Nestor Carbonell’s Yanko Flores are all likely to return for season 4 of The Morning Show .

Even if Bradley and Laura don’t reconcile, we’ll probably see more of Margulies since her character is one of NBN’s star anchors. Also, with the UBS/NBN merger storyline, we could see more of Elizabeth Perkins, who made an appearance in season 3 as NBN president, Elena.

Season 3 introduced Chris Hunter, played by Nicole Beharie, but that character was being courted by a sports media network, so there’s a chance that she won’t be back.

While Hamm’s character, Paul Marks, might not have a prominent storyline in future seasons, we could see more of him, whether he finds a way to seek retribution for his UBS deal falling apart, or as a subject on one of the news shows.

When does The Morning Show season 4 start filming?

There isn’t a start date in place at this time. Since the WGA strike only concluded at the end of September 2023 and the SAG-AFTRA strike is ongoing, it’s unclear when filming for season 4 could begin.

Will there be a season 5 of The Morning Show ?

A fifth season pickup hasn’t been announced since filming hasn’t even started on season 4 yet, but the streamer has an option in place which makes season 5 a possibility.

While showrunner Stoudt told THR that she's focused on season 4 for the time being, she didn't rule out the possibility of the story continuing.

"You can always say something new about what’s going on in the world," she said. "I have no idea about how long people want to go on, but I do think it’s a show that can constantly reinvent itself."
