Patagonia Tours & Vacations

Hiker in red jacket in the mountains of Patagonia, on a clear sunny day with a few clouds

Sandwiched between two oceans and sprawled across two countries. Patagonia is as ‘end-of-the-world’ as it gets.

Advancing glaciers, gushing waterfalls, snow-topped granite pillars…it’s no wonder Chile and Argentina both stake a claim over this beautiful slice of South America . Where else can you hike past herds of guanaco, hear giant shards of ice crash into the sea, sail the Beagle Channel past unique flora and fauna, and drop by the world’s southernmost city? If anywhere makes you feel small, it’s Patagonia. Adventure to the end of the world and appreciate our planet at its most wild and spectacular.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Where is patagonia.

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

These are the basics you will need to bring for an active adventure in Patagonia:

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)

Rucksack and day bag

Reusable water bottle

Thermal base layers

Hiking clothing

Waterproof/windproof jacket

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Everything taken care of

Adventure doesn’t get much bigger than at the end of the world - and that can be a little overwhelming. If you’re wondering where to go and what to do in Patagonia, we’ve got you covered. Our Patagonia tour packages take care of all the essentials, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. Whether you want to hike the Patagonian Steppes or cruise the Beagle Channel, you’ll be free to find your happy place here.

All you need to know about Patagonia Mountains & Lakes Tours

What is the best month to visit patagonia.

Patagonia is best visited from September to April. Summer (December to February) is the most popular season due to the warmer weather and lush landscapes. Autumn (March to May) gets colder but brings stunning golden foliage and great wildlife viewing, while Spring (September to November) has more rain and chilly winds, but blooming flowers and fewer crowds.

Is Patagonia better in Chile or Argentina?

Patagonia spreads across both Chile and Argentina and it’s easy to do both in one trip. If you’re short on time, go to Chile for Torres del Paine, the iconic ‘W’ trek, the Rio Serrano boat cruise, and the scenic Carretera Austral highway. Alternatively, head to Argentina for Los Glaciares National Park, stunning Mount Fitz Roy, and the amazing wildlife of Ushuaia and Puerto Madryn.

How many days do you need to visit Patagonia?

The time you spend in Patagonia is entirely up to you and all depends on the places you want to visit in Patagonia. If you want to see the top highlights of both Argentine and Chilean Patagonia and do some hiking, you may need around 10 days or more. However, if you only plan to see a few highlights or do some short walks, a week or less may be enough.

Where do you fly into for Patagonia?

If you’re heading to Patagonia, you’ll most likely fly into one of the capital cities - Buenos Aires in Argentina or Santiago in Chile. You can then take a domestic flight into several Patagonia destinations, including Punta Arenas, Balmaceda and Puerto Montt in Chile and Ushuaia, Bariloche, El Calafate and Puerto Madryn in Argentina.

What Makes Our Patagonia Trips Special?

  • The Absolute Best of Patagonia — We’ll take you to the most iconic places including Fitz Roy, Torres del Paine, and Tierra del Fuego, hiking by day and being welcomed at boutique hotels and heritage estancias by night.
  • The Right Pacing to Truly Experience Patagonia — Patagonia is vast, and its weather is notoriously changeable—you can’t rush this trip, or you may never see the mountain views, much less truly experience its amazing parks.
  • Insider Access to Exclusive Accommodations — Our decades-long relationships in Patagonia give you special access to some of Patagonia’s most renowned estancias and lodges. We usually have sole access to each of these boutique accommodations.
  • Superb Trip Leaders and Expert Local Guides — Our Trip Leaders have decades of experience and incredible knowledge to share. You’ll be introduced to countless locals along the way and given a wonderful insider’s experience.
  • Comfortable Travel — Travel here requires a few long drives, but we do it in comfort, with a redesigned bus that has half the seats removed, doubling your legroom—and we make plenty of stops for photography and wildlife spotting.

Everything You Need to Know

We time our trips for Patagonia’s ideal hiking weather, from late November through early March, when we can enjoy the mildest temperatures and 16 hours of daylight.

Patagonia weather chart.

An immense, wild territory covering over 400,000 square miles of Chile and Argentina, Patagonia spans the entire southern tip of South America, and has endless wild territory to explore. Our trips allow you to experience the best regions of this vast wilderness area: Tierra del Fuego, Los Glaciares, and Torres del Paine.

Patagonia offers everything from long through-hiking treks to short leisurely walks. Our team of experts hand-pick the very best parts of these trails that show you the most magnificent vistas while staying away from the crowds. See here for just a few of our top picks.

Our long-term relationships in Patagonia give you the privilege of insider access. The boutique, family-owned lodges and estancias we partner with are a highlight of our Ultimate Patagonia and Estancias of Patagonia journeys for many guests, welcoming us in at the end of each day with a glass of Malbec and a roaring fire. In many of the lodges, we will have the whole property for our group alone, and as Patagonia becomes more and more popular as a destination, this kind of special access is increasingly hard to find.

We’ve been staying at some of the estancias for 30 or more years. They know us, and we know the wonderful families, hosts, and long-time staff members who make these accommodations feel like home in the wilderness. They are not “fancy” per se, but instead are genuine, inviting, secret hideaways that you will long remember. We start with a bang at El Pilar, a storybook lodge on the edge of Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park, where Fitz Roy is framed by the dining room window and the home-cooking is superb. El Pilar sits right on the trail of one of the best hikes in the park, and is run by a wonderful couple, Guillermo and Cristina. Estancia Helsingfors is way off the road, exclusive to our group, and has the most magnificent setting imaginable (we even have the trails to ourselves here).

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

You could not have designed a better itinerary. Every day, every lodge, every meal, every experience was (unbelievably) better than the day before. Thank you for making this a phenomenal travel experience that I’ll remember for a lifetime.
We were so well taken care of—lovely hosterias, in unbelievable settings, always comfortable, and fantastic food.
The trip design was brilliant. Each day we thought we had captured “the prize” but the next day was even better. How did you do this?
The trip totally surpassed my expectations. Patagonia was absolutely breathtaking and one of the most spectacular travels I have had so far.
A fabulous itinerary, with spectacular scenery and hiking opportunities, wildlife, lodge comfort, quality dining, and no altitude—wow!
A 5-star experience—unforgettable, well organized, planned, paced.
Our Patagonia experience seemed surreal. Breathtaking views, outstanding Trip Leaders, and excellent lodging.
Of all nine of our wonderful WT adventures, Patagonia is one of our most memorable. The combination of outstanding WT staff and a truly magical place (plus the good fortune of great weather) made this trip a ‘life list’ experience for us!
This was a trip of a lifetime. I loved, loved, loved the hiking, the views, the corners turned to find a spectacular glacial lake, towering rocks, a glacier swooping down, a waterfall. What more could a person want??
Impeccable itinerary and outstanding implementation. Every day delivered a new ‘oh my’ because of the variety of the scenery and experiences. Thanks, Wilderness Travel!
Loved the variety, from penguins and glaciers, to high deserts and craggy mountains.
This was a truly exceptional trip where we felt that we were able to fully experience the Patagonian wilderness but from the relative comfort of some wonderful small hotels and estancias.

Patagonia Tours & Vacation Packages

Encounter one of Earth’s most extreme environments by taking an Argentinian Patagonia tour through the extraordinary steppelands, glaciers and stark coastlines of South America’s furthest frontier. Step into a land of true contrast, where the vast emptiness of silent plains opens out onto towering pillars of granite, glaciers, and huge ice fields second only to those of the Antarctic.

Puerto Pirámides on the Valdés peninsula – and nearby Puerto Madryn to an extent – is a veritable year-round water wonderland, a sanctuary for elephant seals, sea lions and fur seals, often frequented by pods of orcas, and even calving Southern right whales between the winter months of July and September. When summer arrives, head south to Punta Tombo to find the world’s largest colony of Magellanic penguins who are resident from September to March, and continue down the coast to Puerto Deseado for a frivolous festival of flippers, fins, feathers and fur, as you witness charismatic rockhopper penguins, five species of cormorant and Commerson’s dolphins in the estuary and a huge fur seal colony at the Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve. Finally you’ll reach the end of the world – well, its southernmost city – Ushuaia, the gateway to the dramatic Tierra Del Fuego National Park , a fossil-rich land of superlative natural beauty filled with waterfalls, forests, mountains and glaciers.

You can take direct flights to Patagonia Argentina from Buenos Aires or Chilean Patagonia from Santiago de Chile. There are also international flights and ground transportation between Argentinean and Chilean Patagonia. For the best experience, consider booking Patagonia tours to ensure a smooth trip.

The best time is from October to April (our summer). The weather is more pleasant for outdoor activities, making Patagonia travel ideal during these months. However, there are trips in Patagonia available all year round.

From north to south, the highlights are Bariloche, the capital of the Lake District, Península Valdés, the most important wildlife reserve of Argentine Patagonia where whales come every year to breed their calves, El Calafate, where people go to visit the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén, the Argentine capital of trekking and, finally, Ushuaia, best known as the city “at the end of the world”. These destinations are must-visits on any Patagonia trip.

Regardless of when you travel, bring warm clothes! Even if you travel during the Argentine summer and are blessed with a beautiful, warm day of sunshine, the winds can come out of nowhere and blow you away in no time. So wear windproof/north-facing jackets, a hat, gloves, long pants, and scarves. Warm clothes are essential for all trips to Patagonia.

Yes, to have the right clothes to enjoy Patagonian nature is important. The weather can vary a lot on the same day and you can have the four seasons in 24 hours! This is a crucial aspect of Patagonia travel planning.

The best is to dress in layers, the weather changes a lot and it can be sunny and warm like a summer day, or it can rain, be windy, and even snow on the same day! Wear shoes suitable for trekking, waterproof shoes are better. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a small backpack, and a water bottle you can recharge are also important for any Patagonia tours or adventures.

What To Do in Patagonia?

When you hear the word “Patagonia” you think of a vast, virgin, and distant territory in the southern tip of South America. Shared by two countries, Chile and Argentina, Patagonia offers beautiful and spectacular landscapes . Although this region shares its name between these two countries, the landscapes are completely different.

Patagonia hosts stunning glaciers, and incredibly diverse wildlife, especially in Península Valdés .  The Perito Moreno Glacier, the penguins of Ushuaia , and the most reputed hiking trails of El Chaltén add to the highlights Patagonia charms travelers .

Chile on the other hand is known by the fjords that many have sailed. From Puerto Montt to the archipelagos of Chiloe, Chonos, and Aysen, and the mythical city of Castro, Chilean Patagonia offers different landscapes from Argentina .

However, one place in Chilean Patagonia overshadows any other destination,  Chile’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine .  With its three majestic pink and white granite towers guard, the park welcomes hundreds of hikers daily during summer.

To sum up, weather permitting, Patagonia is an all-in-one destination that offers something for everyone! You can choose between active trips, hiking journeys, or even family vacations to discover the best of Patagonia. Whether planning your Patagonia travel itinerary or looking for the best trips in Patagonia, this region promises unforgettable experiences. Travel to Patagonia with confidence and explore the wonders of this breathtaking region.

Best destinations to combine in patagonia.

Patagonia features different regions and natural attractions. It is divided into the lake district, the coastline of Península Valdés where most of the Patagonian wildlife can be found, and the southernmost Patagonia which comprises Ushuaia, El Calafate, and Torres del Paine National Park.

El Calafate, Argentina

Known as “the capital of glaciers”, El Calafate, is one of the most popular destinations in Patagonia. It was named after a typical blueberry that grows in the area (the legend says whoever eats a Calafate blueberry will always return to the city).

It features the best of Patagonia in Argentina , giant glaciers, icy lakes, remote estancias, and no shortage of breathtaking views accompanying outdoor excursions such as trekking, kayaking, and horse riding. This is a small city, really easy to get around on foot, with beautiful views of Argentino Lake.

The nearest airport has good flight frequency, this is the easiest way to reach El Calafate. The city and its glaciers (around 47 in the park) were discovered at the end of the XIX century.

Today, El Calafate offers the famous Perito Moreno Glacier boat trips in Argentino Lake, day tours to Patagonia ranches to learn about the rural culture, visits to El Chaltén and Mount Fitz Roy to enjoy amazing views and adventure hikes and other activities.

El Chaltén, Argentina

Founded in 1985, El Chaltén is a little mountaineering village located inside the Glaciers National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Argentine Patagonia. For many years this secluded place remains the unexplored spot for intrepid travelers.

Today, though it manages to preserve its little-town ambiance, El Chaltén is visited by many people every year who enjoy hikes of different lengths and difficulty levels. Is in this isolated corner of Patagonia where the famous Mount Fitz Roy can be admired.

Mount Chaltén is another highlight near the village which was named after this colossal and sacred mountain for the Tehuelches, the natives of the region. Its summit, frequently covered by clouds, was called by the Tehuelches “Chaltén” which means “smoking mountain” in their language.

In 2015, Chaltén was declared “National Capital of Trekking”, but travelers can also enjoy other adventure activities like kayaking, horseback riding, and sailing.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Puerto Madryn was founded in 1865 by a 150 group of Welsh that established on the area in 1886. Welsh, Spanish and Italian immigrants worked together to build the railway that would connect Puerto Madryn to the city of Trelew. Is in Trelew where today the nearest airport is located.

Nowadays, the railway it’s no longer used, and many travelers fly to Trelew and stay in Puerto Madryn to visit the incredible natural reserve of Península Valdés, the most important wildlife hub of Patagonia .

The Southern Right Whale arrives at the coast of the Península (but can also be seen from the very coastline of Puerto Madryn!) once a year, between June and December. On the other hand, from October to April, large colonies of Magellan Penguins can be seen too, making this coastal region a favorite among both wildlife enthusiasts and those in search of a truly once-in-a-lifetime Argentine experience.

Bariloche, Argentina

San Carlos de Bariloche locates in the Argentine province of Río Negro at the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. In 1903, Francisco Moreno, an intrepid explorer, and scientist donated these lands to create the Nahuel Huapi National Park, the first in Argentina, and thus, Bariloche started to flourish.

Few people know that the city is entirely located inside the park, famous today for its stunning lakes and mountains . Plus, Bariloche neighbors the Andes Mountain Range and features some spectacular mountains to be climbed like the Tronador, actually, a non-active volcano.

Therefore, Bariloche is nowadays one of the most populated cities in Patagonia. It is the tourist hub for hiking or skiing, but also to taste the best artisanal chocolate and craft beer .

In addition, the city is one of the most essential scientific poles in America. Students come to Balseiro Atomic Center and Institute to follow Physics and Nuclear Engineering studies.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, best known as “the destination at the end of the world”. It is the southernmost tip of land in Argentina and a favorite destination for adventure traveling.

To clarify, actually Tierra de Fuego is an island, separated from the American continent by the Strait of Magellan. From Ushuaia, you can sail through the legendary Beagle Channel too, and visit Les Eclereurs lighthouse.

This is a popular outing because on the way travelers can spot islands covered by sea lions and cormorants. Moreover, you can hike in go kayaking in Tierra del Fuego National Park to enjoy a close encounter with the particular vegetation and wildlife of the region.

Torres del Paine, Chile

Torres del Paine National Park, created in 1959, is one of the most visited destinations in Chilean Patagonia. Its first inhabitants were the Tehuelches, a native community of skilled hunters.

With its 227,298 hectares, extended hiking trails, glaciers, lakes, and stunning mountains, the park hosts thousands of travelers each year. In 1978, the park was declared as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO , and the 8th wonder of the world in 2013 .

The “Torres del Paine” name refers to the three distinctive granite peaks of the Paine Mountain Range that soar more than 6,500 feet (nearly 2,000 meters) into the sky. The park welcomes more than 250,000 visitors every year and the 5-day “W” trek is the most famous hiking circuit inside the reserve.

Puerto Varas, Chile

Known as the ‘City of the Roses’, Puerto Varas locates is in the Lake District in southern Chile. It is located on the southwestern shore of the extensive Lake Llanquihue, which offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped and still active Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes.

Traditional German-style architecture characterizes the city. Puerto Varas is a great choice for open-air adventures, excellent kayaking and angling are among the many activities this city offers. Renting a bike in Puerto Varas and riding to the beautiful Petrohué waterfalls while enjoying the many lakeside beaches on the way is one of the unique experiences we recommend.

Puerto Natales, Chile

Puerto Natales is the nearest city to Torres del Paine National Park and features a nearby airport. Some of the highlights of Puerto Natales are the Milodón Cave, an archaeological visit that will make you travel 10,000 years into the past. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Ultima Esperanza fjord. In Puerto Natales, you can navigate to see the largest glaciers in Patagonia!

What Kind of People Patagonia Tours Suit Best?

For animal lovers.

Besides the great landscapes, another good thing about Patagonia is the native wildlife. On the Chilean side, the national park Torres del Paine is home to deer, foxes, swans , and solitary but still dangerous pumas that can be found chasing one of the funny-looking “cousins” of the llamas: the guanacos. Also, if you pay enough attention, you might see the Andean condor, known for being the largest bird on the continent.

Meanwhile, don’t think that the unstable weather and freezing temperatures of the end of the world have made it impossible for animals to survive: guanacos, rabbits, and beavers are all over Tierra del Fuego. The province also features one of the many penguin colonies , and if you jump on a boat, you may also see some Humpback whales. These unique wildlife encounters make Patagonia tours perfect for animal lovers.

For athletic

Those who can’t stay still for a long time and enjoy playing sports even during their vacations can find great opportunities for enjoying adventure tours in Patagonia . Kayaking through the amazing fjords, rivers, and lagoons of the Lake District, skiing at the end of the world or the breathtaking Chilean volcanoes, horseback riding on the Patagonian steppe, climbing, mountain biking, rafting … the possibilities are endless.

For not that sporty but enjoy beautiful sites

The region is also perfect for calm visitors who enjoy watching and listening to nature for hours without undergoing great physical effort. Besides, one of the most amazing points of Patagonia is standing still, waiting for you, and being approachable by boat.

Yes, we are talking about Perito Moreno Glacier . Just watching the five kilometers of width and 60 meters over sea level that features this breathtaking ice mass is a once-in-a-lifetime experience impossible to forget. This is a highlight for many Patagonia travel itineraries.

The region is also perfect to take cruises that cross the fjords and glaciers of both countries. Another interesting option is to grab a car in Chile and jump on the Austral road that ends in the idyllic Lake O’Higgins after getting the most out of the beautiful region of Aysen.

Meanwhile, on the Argentine side, one of the best drives is through the Lake District , where the stunning setting will make it impossible to resist not jumping out of the car a thousand times…

If you’re a cold-sensitive person

Looking at the forecast weather can make those sensitive to cold want to draw back from their adventure in Patagonia . It’s a huge mistake. It’s true that even if you arrive during the summer months (December-March), the temperatures will still be low and you’ll have to face fierce winds, but it’s because of this unstable and harsh weather that this corner of the world has breathtaking scenery to offer.

Besides, there are plenty of places to take shelter and interesting indoor activities , like the Paleontology Museum in Trelew , where the dinosaurs will help you warm up. Still, stay outside as long as you can. Wear your best winter clothes, and don’t forget to cover your feet, hands, and head. We guarantee you: it’ll be worth it. Whether you’re on a Patagonia trip for adventure or relaxation, the experiences are unparalleled .

Patagonia is a destination that caters to various types of travelers. Whether you prefer tranquil trips in Patagonia, exciting adventure activities, or cultural experiences, there’s something for everyone. Travel to Patagonia and discover the diverse attractions that make this region unique.

Thank you and the entire team for making our trip a wonderful experience. The accommodations were terrific. The tour guide in Santiago was particularly wonderful. Can't say enough about Patagonia Camp. The staff, yurt experience and natural beauty made the camp experience truly memorable.

Thank you again

PS what a great idea to plant trees.

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

We enjoyed our trip very much

Sayhueque did an amazing job from start to finish.

You guys helped me provide my husband with a truly unforgettable experience for his 50th birthday, and I can’t say thank you enough.

The trip was really great, everything went smoothly and I had a great time! The organisation was great and I have nothing to really complain about.

I would rate this trip 9.5/10 and definitely recommend it to others if they wanted to go to Patagonia. The activities that you chose were very good and the organisation was great. Also because of the 24/7 emergency contact that responded very quickly. Felipe, our travel advisor was great help!

Thanks for everything

Our trip was fantastic - you and the team did a great job pulling together with very little notice. We will gladly use your company again and refer you to others. It turns out, a friend of ours used your company in 2021 (we found out afterward) and was also very happy.

Everything went according to plan perfectly. We were happy with all the accommodations, all were very clean; the guides & drivers were all wonderful, very nice & helpful on private tours; good on shared tours. Driver Franciso from P. Arenas airport to Torres Del Paine was great; made the trip interesting, had fun with Spanish/English - saw lots of wildlife, and made a few picture stops.. a fun journey.

Good job... we'll be back!

We had an incredible experience.

The only hiccup we had were the flights being overbooked and having to spend more time than needed at the airport. Overall, we loved all the excursions. We would 100% recommend Say Hueque.

- At Iguazu, we enjoyed having the private guided tour to learn more about the falls and Rodrigo was great. It would have been nice to have an extra hour or so at the end to walk around ourselves and revisit some of the falls- they were so beautiful and could have spent the whole day there watching them!

- For the hike at Torres del Paine, the guides were fantastic. We are just faster hikers and don’t typically hike in a group. I think for that excursion, having the option to take the bus there and do a hike on our own and bus back would have been nice.

- The museum was closed in Ushuaia for the penguin rookery tour. Would recommend scheduling that tour on the days the museum is open if possible. Either way, seeing those penguins so close was so much fun! They’re so cute!

- Wish we could have been there one extra day to watch Argentina win the World Cup while in Argentina! What a fantastic game!!!

Thanks again for all your assistance with this. We had a wonderful time and hopefully one day we can go back (we really want to combine the O and the W for a backpacking trip in Torres del Paine!)

All the guides and hotels were fantastic and we wish we had more time there, we really had the best honeymoon we could have asked for!

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

Learn About Our Private Trips

On this  Patagonia hiking tour , we will pick you up at the airport in Puerto Natales, Chile. Depending on what time you arrive, you’ll have time to rest or explore the town before we meet for our orientation where we will review the upcoming days, issue gear, and get to know one another. We will then toast to the adventures ahead and enjoy our first Patagonia dinner together.

Important Note : When you enter Chile, you will be issued a document called a PDI (tourism card). Please do NOT throw this away. You will need it to exit the country and nearly every lodge we stay in also asks for a copy.

  • Hiking Mileage: 9.3 mi (15 km)
  • Elevation Gain: 820 ft (250 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 985 ft (300 m)
  • Trekking Duration: 5-6 hours
  • Driving Duration: 1.5 hours

Today we depart Puerto Natales after breakfast and head towards Torres del Paine National Park. Our drive takes us to the region’s biggest lake, Mirador Lago Toro. The views from this lake of the Torres del Paine massive are a great introduction to the types of sweeping autumnal landscapes we’ll experience throughout our coming days. Upon arrival at the lake, your guides will give an overview of the natural and cultural history of the area. Our hike today starts directly from the lake and ends at our lovely lodging by the Rio Serrano. This hike is off the beaten path, full of solitude, and showcases well the Patagonia environments you came to enjoy. Once arriving to our remote lodge, we’ll join our awaiting luggage, get checked in, and relax before dinner together.

  • Hiking Mileage: 11.8 mi (19 km)
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 2524 ft (740 m)
  • Trekking Duration: 7-8 hours
  • Driving Duration: 1 hour

After an early wake-up call and scrumptious breakfast, we’ll depart the lodge. Our objective today is quite possibly the most popular hike in Torres del Paine National Park. Our early start will let us beat the crowds on the trail to this iconic destination. We begin our trek to the Ascencio Valley, while having views of the stunning Ascencio River. We will come to Refugio Chileno (a backcountry hut) and have a break for water and snacks. We then continue through a beautiful forest of native Lenga (Beech) trees and keep hiking until we reach a glacial moraine (a ridge made from debris pushed out by the glacier). From the moraine, we trek another hour until we reach the most impressive Torres del Paine rock spires! Our views of the iconic granite towers and turquoise glacial lake are absolutely breathtaking, and they are the features that made this park world-famous. After our hike we will head back to the Villa Serrano, where we will enjoy another night at our cozy and elegant lodge.

  • Hiking Mileage: 5 mi (8.1 km) *optional hike
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: 2780 ft (847 m) *optional hike
  • Elevation Loss: 2780 ft (847 m) *optional hike
  • Trekking Duration: 3-4 hours

This morning after breakfast, we will drive roughly 30 minutes to Grey lake, where we will have the opportunity to kayak for the morning, if weather conditions are in our favor. We begin our paddle on the Pingo River in an area full of icebergs that have broken off of Grey Glacier. It’s absolutely magical to paddle around floating blue icebergs in Patagonia! After we have seen the icebergs, and if the weather allows, we’ll continue down river via kayak back to our lodge, where we will have lunch and change into our trekking clothes. We then begin hiking to our special Two Glacier Look Out Point. This is a special and lesser-known hike that leads us to an awesome vantage point to see Grey and Tyndall Glaciers. This hike is optional, and if you prefer, you may relax at the lodge.

Due to occasionally harsh weather conditions, the kayaking is not always possible and will be substituted by an alternative activity if not possible.

  • Hiking Mileage: up to 13 mi (20.9 km)
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: up to 2953 ft (900 m)
  • Elevation Loss: 2953 ft (900 m)
  • Trekking Duration: 7-9 hours

After another breakfast with breathtaking views of the Paine Massif in front of us, we transfer to Pudeto and cross lake Pehoe by catamaran. Today we explore the famous French Valley, one of the most picturesque valleys in Torres del Paine National Park with hanging glaciers and awe-inspiring granite walls and spires. With any luck we’ll witness glaciers calving and hear the resulting natural symphony echoing throughout the granite amphitheater. Today’s lengthy hike is through the French Valley and up to a stunning viewpoint to witness the spectacular surrounding mountain vistas. We will then descend back to Lake Pehoe, board our catamaran, and travel back to Villa Serrano for some free time before dinner.

  • Boat Excursion: 2.5 hours
  • Driving Duration: ~3 hours

After breakfast we will say goodbye to Villa Serrano and board the Grey III catamaran for a 2.5-hour boat tour of the lake, glaciers, and mountain views. The boat gets up close and personal to Grey Glacier and there is an option for a Chilean pisco sour served with glacial ice as we absorb the majesty of our surroundings. We will enjoy lunch in the near the boat harbor. We then start our return to Puerto Natales. Along the way, we’ll stop to explore the Milodon Cave Natural Reserve. This reserve is surrounded by magnificent snowcapped mountains and glacier-colored fjords. Here we can learn about of the beginning of the Holocene era (12.500 years BC), where the early human settlers to this region first left remnants of their presence. We’ll follow the coast of the paleo-lake of the Last Hope Fjord, here we visit various caves and learn about how the settlers lived and survived in this area. We’ll savor our final celebratory dinner together in Puerto Natales.

After breakfast, our shuttle driver will deliver you back to the airport in Puerto Natales. Thank you for choosing Wildland Trekking!

Important Note : When you enter Chile, you will be issued a document called a PDI (tourism card). Please do NOT throw this away. You will need it to exit the country and nearly every lodge we stay in also asks for a copy. It is also a good idea to take a picture of it, front and back.

We secure limited amounts of pre and post trip lodging in Puerto Natales as an optional add-on for guests of this trip. This lodging is on request, and is available on a first come, first serve basis. If interested, please reach out directly  to our team to check availability.

Safety Precautions

Your safety is our top priority. Our hiking tours are led by professional hiking guides, all of whom are wilderness-certified first responders or EMT’s, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience. Guides adhere to standardized risk management protocols in case of any potential or actual incident, and all tours carry an emergency communication device and comprehensive first-aid kit. Additionally we have a “24/7” system through which guides or guests can reach Wildland support personnel at any time.

In the interest of your safety, it’s important to refer to the  Center for Disease Control website  for up-to-date recommendations on immunizations before your trip.

Essential Eligibility Criteria

Essential Eligibility Criteria (“EEC”)  have been specifically identified to help you understand the skills and abilities necessary to participate on each Wildland trip, and they apply uniformly to all potential trip participants, irrespective of the presence or absence of any disability.

Once you identify a trip in which you may be interested, please carefully review the  EEC  and itinerary details. If after reviewing the EEC that apply to your desired trip, you determine you need an accommodation in order to meet the EEC, please  contact us  prior to registering to discuss your requested accommodation.

The EEC exist for your own safety and the safety and enjoyment of all participants. If you are unable to meet the EEC for the trip, with or without an accommodation, you are not eligible for that trip. If you register and arrive for a trip for which you do not meet the EEC, you will be disqualified from participation on the trip and will be dismissed or evacuated from the trip without a refund.

Our approach to international travel is to combine the best of two worlds: the dialed-in details, professionalism and consistency Wildland trips are known for; and the cultural immersion and intimate regional knowledge that only locals can provide. To excel with this approach, we vet and hire the best local guides, welcome them into the Wildland family and train them to meet our standard of excellence with every aspect of a trip. But along with managing logistics and safety, your guides will teach you about the area’s history and culture, and provide a level of familiarity and intimate detail only locals can.

Check out our  Meet Our Team  page for staff bios.

Weather In Patagonia

The Patagonia region of Chile, where we operate our trips, is at the far southern tip of South America, relatively far from the equator and close to the South Pole. It is a generally cool climate with potential for year-round inclement weather including rain, snow, sleet, and very strong winds.

The average temperatures and precipitation in the Patagonia region are:
