Cork Cruise Port

The Port of Cork is the only port in Ireland with a dedicated cruise berth in Cobh. The Port can also handle cruise liners in Ringaskiddy Deepwater Quay and the City Quays. One of the most abiding memories of cruising in Northern Europe is entering picturesque Cork harbour. The deepwater of the Port of Cork is the natural entry point to many of Ireland’s principal visitor attractions and arriving by cruise liner is a truly sublime experience.

Cobh Heritage Center cruise terminal is adjacent to the Cobh train station which is only 50 meters from the place where passengers disembark. 8 Best Things to Do in Port Cork (Port of Cobh)

1. cobh heritage center (the queenstown story).

If you want to learn about turbulent Irish history, you should first head to this unique heritage museum at the cruise terminal, next to the Cobh railway station. The museum consists of permanent exhibitions allowing visitors to learn about the largest Irish emigration, the country’s maritime history, the Irish Potato Famine that left in starvation over a million people in the 19th century…

You will see exhibitions of the first steamship that made a transatlantic trip in 1838, learn about the tragic sinking of RMS Lusitania in 1915 and see exhibitions on the RMS Titanic whose last port of call before it sank in 1912 was Cobh (back then Queenstown).

Right outside the Heritage Center, you will find the statue of Annie Moore, the first emigrant to the United States processed through the immigration station at Ellis Island. Cobh Heritage Centre is fully accessible for wheelchair users and the entire center is step-free.

2. The Titanic Experience

Take a guided walking and virtual tour alongside a knowledgeable guide and learn all about the connection between the Titanic and Cobh harbor, its last stop before its sinking in 1912.

Housed in the former White Star Line ticket office on Casement Square, only a 5-minute walk from the cruise terminal, this visitor attraction offers a powerful insight into the Titanic’s everyday life. You will learn about the living conditions for third and first-class passengers on board the ship and even experience the chill of sinking as one of the last 123 passengers who embarked on the Titanic right at that place!

The whole experience is designed to make you feel and live the destiny of these last 123 passengers, and you’ll even get a boarding pass with one of their names! It is a truly unique experience and a must when visiting Cobh. The Titanic Experience Center is wheelchair friendly, there is a small device lift that will take you to the reception level.

The whole tour takes around 1-1.30 hours and the departures are every 15-30 minutes. It is recommended to book tickets online to avoid disappointments and lack of space. Tickets must be booked up to midnight before the day before your visit.

3. St. Colman’s Cathedral

Also known as Cobh Cathedral, this magnificent church standing on a hill overlooking the town and the harbor is the tallest church in Ireland with its 91.4-meter tall (300 ft) spire. The construction of this imposing neo-Gothic church started in 1868 and was completed in 1919. The tower has a carillon of 49 bells making it one of the largest in Europe.

The iconic cathedral is located in the heart of Cobh, less than a 10-minute walk from the pier. It is open daily and has free admission. St Colman’s Cathedral is wheelchair accessible.

4. Cork City Sightseeing

Cork city spans both banks of River Lee and boasts numerous medieval churches, forts, picturesque lively streets, and a fantastic tourist offer.

Cork city panorama with St Anne's Church and Tower

If you want to get the most out of Cork in a day, I suggest you either explore the city on foot (however bear in mind the city is hilly) or take Cork Hop on Hop off bus tour and explore the main attractions of Cork at your leisure with their non – stop loop. Onboard the Hop on Hop off bus you will have access to information about the city, its rich history and architecture. Some of the main Cork attractions included in the sightseeing bus itineraries are:

  • Shandon Bells & Tower at St Anne’s Church – Built in 1722, this is the oldest church in the city featuring a 36.6 meters (120 ft) tall tower that you can climb and admire the most stunning 360-degree views of Cork city. To get to the observation area located on top of the tower, you need to handle 132 steps. The biggest attraction is the bells that visitors can ring on the church’s first floor.
  • Cork City Gaol – The restored 19th-century city prison converted into an impressive museum featuring exhibitions, night tours, and a gift shop.
  • The English Market – The most famous market in the city opened in 1788 and is known for its long tradition of selling organic and locally produced goods. You can find everything here, from a great selection of cheese, meat, seafood, vegetables, fruits, bread, spices and sauces to an extraordinary collection of wines from all around the world. It is an indoor market housed in an old building boasting remarkable architecture.
  • University College Cork (UCC) – You can tour this magnificent campus and learn about the history of this renowned college founded in 1845 as one of three Queen’s Colleges.
  • Nano Nagle Place – A restored walled convent with breathtaking gardens and a museum dedicated to the nun Nano Nagle, who worked tirelessly to educate the poor people of Cork.
  • Crawford Art Gallery – A fascinating art gallery displaying a collection of 2000 paintings, sculptures, glass and video works.
  • FitzGerald Park – Nestled along the River Lee, this peaceful oasis offers an extensive green space boasting fountains, sculptures, walking paths, and beautiful views over the river. Cork Public Museum (history and ethnography museum) is located in the park.
  • St Finbarr’s Cathedral – A beautiful, neo-Gothic cathedral was built in the 19th century and is dedicated to the city’s 6th-century patron saint, Finbarr of Cork.

5. Blarney Castle

Explore the most visited attraction in Cork, the legendary medieval stronghold originally built around 1200 AD, but demolished afterward and finally restored in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster. According to the legend, the Lia Fáil, or “Stone of Destiny” was part of the king’s throne and it is said that people kissing the stone will receive the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness.

Blarney Castle Cork

The stone was set into a tower of the Blarney Castle in 1446, and ever since the castle has been attracting visitors from all over the world to kiss the stone and tour the castle and its mystical gardens. I strongly recommend purchasing tickets online to avoid the long lines at the entrance. Also, online prices are a little cheaper. Guests with mobility challenges are welcome to explore the castle grounds and gardens. Certain areas are not paved.

How to Get to Blarney Castle from the Port of Cobh and Cork?

  • From Cork – Blarney Castle is situated in Blarney Village, 8.5 km (5 mi) from Cork. From Cork city center take bus 215 (multiple stations in the city: Cork City Bus Station at Parnell Place, St Patric’s Street, City Library, South Mall stop, Cork City Hall) to Blarney Church stop. From there you need to walk less than 10 minutes to the entrance of the castle. The journey by bus takes approximately 20 minutes. Check the timetables and fares at https://www.buseireann.ie/ .
  • From Cobh – Cobh Heritage Center is located 25 km (15.5 mi) from Blarney Castle. The easiest way to get here is on an organized shore excursion so you don’t need to worry about transportation and entrance fees. If you wish to explore it on your own, you will need to take the train to Cork and then switch it over to bus 215 . Check the train timetables at https://www.transportforireland.ie/ .

Check out Blarney Castle tours and activities

Take a trip over the small quaint fishing village of Kinsale, known as the gourmet capital of Ireland and famous for its rich history, narrow streets, colorful shops, and scenic harbor. You can visit the Kinsale Museum featuring exhibits on local history, and admire two old military forts:

  • Charles Fort , a star-shaped 17th-century fort also known as the “new Fort” is located a few minutes drive from Kinsale. This imposing military fortress served as a British Army base until Irish Independence in 1921.
  • Across the harbor is located Fort James , a pentagonal fort also known as the “old fort” that was built to defend the harbor in 1607.

Kinsale village, Cork County

How to Get to Kinsale from Port Cork and Cobh?

  • From Cork – Kinsale is located around 25 km (15.5 mi) from the city of Cork. Éireann bus 226 departs from Cork Kent railway station (Horgan’s Quay) and goes directly to Kinsale (you get off at Kinsale Town Car Park, the last stop). The taxi ride takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • From Port Cobh – From Cobh cruise port, my suggestion is to take an organized transfer or an organized shore excursion as it’s the most reliable option due to the distance between Cobh cruise terminal and Kinsel (which is around 50 km/31 mi, or 50 minutes drive). If you want to go there on your own, you need to take a train from Cobh to Cork and then switch over to bus 226. This option is not recommended as you will be traveling up to 2 hours each way.

Check out Kinsale tours and activities

7. Fota Wildlife Park

Situated on Fota Island around 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the port of Cobh, this verdant 100-acre park is home to more than 100 species of exotic animals and an ideal place to spend the day with the family.

You can choose to explore the park on your own at your own pace or take one of the behind-the-scenes tours to get up close and feed some of their most popular animals like the friendly Humboldt penguins. The park also offers more in-depth tours where you will learn about the rangers’ day-to-day life and our role in preserving our world.

Grey-cheeked Mangabey at Fota Park, Port Cork

To get to Fota Park, you can take the regular train from Cobh Railway Station to Cork Kent Station (or from Cork to Cobh if you are coming from Cork), and get off at Fota train station which is in the middle of the route. The trip takes approximately 10 minutes from both directions. There is a 10-minute walk from the stop to the entrance to the park. A taxi ride takes approximately 10 minutes. Guests with mobility challenges are welcome to the Fota Wildlife Park.

Check out Fota Island tours and activities

8. Waterford

The oldest city in Ireland was founded by Vikings in 914 AD and offers interesting places to visit such as the impressive Medieval Museum , the 13th-century Reginald’s Tower , the Bishop’s Palace, and the renowned House of Waterford Crystal , the finest crystal makers in the world. Explore the manufacturing facility and visitor center to get a close-up view of the process behind the famed glasswork.

Waterford is located in the southeast corner of Ireland approximately 120 km (75 mi) from Cork cruise port. It takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to get to Waterford from both Cobh cruise port and Cork. Due to the distance and limited time in port, I suggest booking an organized shore excursion through the cruise line or a reliable tour operator. There is no direct train from Cobh to Waterford so you will need to change trains and the journey could take more than 4 hours one way. An alternative option is to take a taxi or book a private round-trip transfer.

Explore Waterford tours and activities

If you are taking a cruise to Ireland , make sure you plan your day as this part of the country has so much to offer. You can choose to spend your day in the wonderful Cobh, explore the highlights of Cork, or take a day trip to one of Ireland’s picturesque towns and villages.

DISNEY's Magic cruise ship is set to dock in Ireland this afternoon.

The luxury liner, which is 300 metres long, will arrive in Cobh as part of the British Isles cruise.

Disney fans won't want to miss it

And Mickey Mouse and friends will stay in the area for a couple of hours – setting sail again at 6.15pm.

A number of free family events - including an outdoor ball pool trailer, balloon modelling, face painting and a magic show - will take place on the promenade to mark the ship's first visit.

Port of Cork's Chief Executive, Brendan Keating said: "Welcoming the Disney Magic to Cork is a real honour for the Port of Cork and we look forward to further calls from this admired cruise line."

Disney Cruise Line described Cork as "home to a vibrant culinary scene and a plethora of pubs, shops and cafes."

One of the main pool decks on Disney Magic

They said: "It invites visitors to connect with Ireland’s ancient past, with historic sites like Blarney Castle, where visitors can kiss the famed Blarney Stone."

A spokesperson added: "Following a request by Disney Cruise Line the Deep-water Quay in Cobh will be closed to the public from 2pm until the Disney Magic departs at 6.15pm.

"The Port of Cork is encouraging anyone coming to Cobh to see the ship to view it from the High Road or promenade, and to follow traffic signs for parking in the town."

Trip Report: Cobh Ireland

Boats in Cobh Harbour

Of all the ports the Disney Magic westbound transatlantic cruise was stopping at Cobh is the one I was most excited about. There are lots of options for excursions from Cobh and many you can do on your own.

The Streets of Cobh on the Disney Magic Westbound Transatlantic cruise

We wanted to do the Titanic Experience and found a company that offers the Titanic Trail Walking Tour and the Titanic Experience for one price. Disney had a similar sounding excursion that they were charging $99/person. On our own, it was €17 for adults and €11 for our daughter. She was twelve at the time of the cruise and no longer considered a child by Disney. The decision was easy. We opted to tour on our own and booked the 11:00am tour.

Breakfast before visiting Cobh

The all ashore for this port was 9:15am. Our Titanic Trail Tour began at 11:00am, so we had time to have breakfast in the Main Dining Room. Be sure to check your Navigator or app for the times that Lumiere’s is open for breakfast and lunch. I had the French Toast and Pineapple Stack and loved it. If you like pineapple I recommend trying this dish. It was one of my favourite breakfast dishes.

Once we were all fuelled up we headed out to visit the beautiful town of Cobh. Its name was briefly changed to Queenstown to honour Queen Victoria in 1849 to commemorate her visit to the town. It is well known for its association with two nautical disasters. It was the last port of call for the Titanic and is where the survivors and the dead were brought from the Lusitania. If you are interested in learning more about the Lusitania check out Erik Larson’s book Dead Wake . Many Irish left Ireland for North America leaving from the Port of Cobh.

Cobh is a very pretty town and easy to walk around.

The Titanic Trail Walking Tour

Just before 11am, we made our way to the meeting point for the tour. There were around 20 people on the tour including us. Almost everyone was off the Disney Magic. The tour guide was good and had a lot of interesting information about the area. As we were touring we kept meeting up with the group on the DCL excursion. Both the private tour and the DCL tour followed the same route. If you are thinking about taking the tour I do recommend you do it on your own and save some money.

Cobh Ireland on the Titanic Tour Disney Magic transatlantic cruise

The tour made its way up to St. Colman’s Cathedral. A beautiful cathedral that overlooks Cobh Harbour. Consecrated on 24 August 1919 it houses the famous 49 bell Carillon, the largest in Ireland and Britain. The tour ended there and we had a few minutes to visit the Cathedral before we made our way back down to visit the Titanic Experience.

The Titanic Experience Cobh

Titanic Experience Disney Magic Transatlantic Cruise

There was some confusion when we arrived at the Titanic Experience. A line was outside but it was very unclear as to whether we needed to stand in the line or not. It turned out we were not supposed to wait in line and eventually made our way by for our tour. I enjoyed the tour. If you are planning on staying in Cobh it is a must do. You can book it separately and don’t need to do the tour of Cobh to go in.

After the Titanic Experience and a stop in the gift shop we wandered around Cobh for a little bit longer taking in the town. The weather was a little cool and the skies were threatening rain most of the day. We decided to head back to the ship.

Back on Board

Georgia went to the Edge, and Jay and I decided to stop into the Cove Cafe before we sailed away. It was still fairly quiet onboard. At the Cove Cafe I ordered the Hot Cocoa Wonder. They bring out a glass with a solid chocolate ball in it and pour hot milk over it. The ball of chocolate melts and reveals that it was full of mini marshmallows. If you are looking for a fun drink to warm you up it is a good choice. Jay chose a glass of scotch to warm him up.

disney cruise ship cobh

It was getting close to sail away time, so we headed to deck four and deck ten to get some last pictures of Cobh as we sailed away.

Leaving Cobh Ireland Disney Magic Transatlantic cruise

The show tonight was John Charles. We have seen his show on past cruises and decided to skip it on this cruise, instead, we went and watched the Incredibles 2 in the theatre. I think it was a good decision. Before dinner, we stopped at O’Gills for movie quotes trivia. We love trivia and it was very popular on this cruise often standing room only. Sadly we did not win this one.

Dinner tonight was in Lumiere’s and was the Lumiere’s menu . Lumiere’s isn’t my favourite restaurant and the menu is okay. I think it could use a bit of a revamp. I am pretty sure it hasn’t changed since our first cruise.

Georgia had the Duck Confit, Jay had the Escargot and I had the Iced Lobster and Jumbo Shrimp. I wasn’t a fan. Even though iced is in the title I am always surprised how cold it is, I don’t think it is the best temperature to enhance the flavour. Next time I will follow either Georgia or Jay’s lead and get the duck or escargot.

Duck Confit at Lumieres on the Disney Magic Westbound Transatlantic cruise

For our entrees, Georgia had the Crispy Roasted Duck Breast and I had the Chateaubriand Roasted Filet Steak. Mine was good but not memorable. Georgia loves duck as you may have guessed and enjoyed her meal. Jay was going to order the Conchiglie Pasta, but our served warned him that it was not the best choice, so he ordered the Roasted Rack of Lamb. Raphael, our server, bought out the Conchiglie Pasta for Jay to try. It did have an odd taste that didn’t mesh well with the lobster. I wouldn’t order it, Raphael said that it was often sent back. Trust your server’s recommendations.

Crispy Roasted Duck Breast at Lumieres on the Disney Magic Westbound Transatlantic cruise

For dessert, Georgia opted for the classic Opera cake. The ship was rocking a fair amount at this point and I was feeling unwell so I skipped dessert and headed back to the room.

Classic Opera Gâteau at Lumieres on the Disney Magic Westbound Transatlantic cruise

After dinner, Georgia headed to the Edge to meet up with her friends. Jay came back to the room to check on me. I have always been prone to motion sickness and the combination of our room location, so far forward, and the rough seas, I was seasick. Luckily it was the only time I felt that bad and was much more careful about taking my anti-nausea medicine. I have found that the roughest part of the journey on a transatlantic cruise is when we are near land. We have had no trouble out in the Atlantic Ocean, so far.

Coming up next our first of many sea days! If you are just joining this trip report make sure you check out our planning , our time in London , and how we got to the port from London . See the next post about our first sea day here.

Here's a look on-board the Disney Cruise Liner that could be hitting Cork next year.

The mammoth ship is set to land in the Rebel County in September 2022, but in a slight change of plan it'll now be docking in Ringaskiddy.

The seven-day cruise that stops off in Cork, Dublin, Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow and Edingburgh, is full of family activities and even has an on-board nightclub.

The trip, which costs €4,000 for two guests, had initially planned to land in Cobh but their site has changed the itinerary and replaced the town with redeveloping Ringaskiddy.

The 300 metre long vessel will dock there before passengers will be whisked off to see a range of the county's best attractions.

They say: "The third most populous city in the country, Cork is a European cultural capital with a celebrated arts community, a trendy dining scene and a robust shopping atmosphere.

"The residents of Cork take pride in their beautiful city with its Gaelic heritage, verdant landscape and multiethnic population."

A different promotional video on their site described the "colourful Port of Cork" as the "perfect gateway to explore this stunning island".

They say: "Cork offers so much to explore, from a guided tour of Spike Island where over 2,000 convicts were detained to enjoying the 18th century hunting lodge the Fota House, located on the 788 acre island.

"The children will enjoy their special tour through the house while trying to uncover the conundrum of Mrs Kevin's missing cat.

"And don't forget to sip a cup of tea while the little ones fill their tummies with a cookie.

The video then moves on the Jameson Distillery and Ballymaloe Estate.

"Enchanting village" Kinsale is also on their list with hose signing up promised some lovely refreshments in The Spaniard Pub as well as sights that are "truly something to behold".

We'd have to agree with them there.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.
