10 SUVs That Will Make You Forget Your Sports Car Dreams

This is how much a 5-year-old honda cr-v is worth today, the toyota rav4 is the new camry for more than one reason.

  • The Nissan Patrol Safari Y61, known for its off-road prowess, has maintained its reputation for ruggedness and has a devoted fan base, particularly in regions like Australia, the Middle East, and Africa.
  • The Patrol Y61 is highly valued by non-governmental organizations and the United Nations for its unmatched capabilities in accessing remote and challenging locations, making it the ultimate choice for traversing unforgiving environments.
  • The Patrol Y61 offers versatile powertrain options and a comprehensive range of trim levels, catering to various needs and applications. It boasts a powerful 4.8-liter gasoline engine, making it a favorite among Middle Eastern tuners who push its performance to over 1000 horsepower.

Fewer vehicles can command the respect and admiration that the legendary Nissan Patrol Safari does. The Patrol Safari built originally in the 1950s with inspiration from the Willy's Jeep, this Japanese marvel has managed to uphold its reputation of unwavering ruggedness, owing to its exceptional off-road prowess. The Patrol has garnered a strong following in regions such as Australia, the Middle East, and Africa where off-road exploration and daring escapades prevail, and has cultivated a devoted fan base.

The fifth-generation Patrol Safari Y61 is a model the North American region never had the pleasure of seeing, however, the region got its first introduction to the Patrol-based platform in 2010 with the introduction of the second-generation Infiniti QX56. The Patrol Y61 remains the oldest new Nissan SUV that is still in production in selected markets as demand for the SUV has not weaned the slightest.

The Patrol Safari doesn't hold the distinction of being the oldest Japanese truck still in production, that spot is shared with its arch-nemesis the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series . While the newer iterations of the Nissan Patrol boast heightened luxury and a plethora of modern features, these aspects gracefully take a back seat in the narrative of this article. Instead, it is the fifth-generation Patrol Super Safari Y61 that claims the spotlight in this epic saga of classic mobility.

A 4x4 That Is Worth It For Corporations And Enthusiasts Alike

For nearly three decades, the Nissan Patrol Y61 has stood as the primary choice of vehicle for Non-governmental organizations operating in Africa. The vehicle's unmatched capabilities have made it an indispensable asset for these organizations, allowing them to access remote and challenging locations that are beyond the reach of conventional pick-up trucks and standard SUVs. Given the necessity to transport vital supplies to remote areas, the Patrol Y61's enduring performance has solidified its position as the ultimate choice for traversing such unforgiving environments.

Enthusiasts love the Patrol Y61 for its off-road capabilities thanks in part to its four-wheel drive system with an intelligent rear differential lock that allows the SUV to navigate difficult terrain such as mud or sand easily by distributing torque evenly to the rear wheels. Up front are three-link and five-link rear telescopic shocks and heavy-duty coil springs to ensure that the SUV beats all obstacles in its way. Nissan has made sure that whether enthusiast use or corporate, drivers are not left lacking with a host of features including:

  • Tan leather seats and door trim
  • Eight-way powered driver seat
  • Four-way passenger seats
  • Automatic climate control
  • Navigation system with Bluetooth, USB, CD, AUX, and AM/FM radio
  • Rear Pintle hook
  • Dual front airbags
  • Cruise control

In the Middle East region, the Y61 Patrol is a regular fixture on the desert dunes, in both its original form and as customized versions, a testament to its popularity and adaptability in the region. Nissan's continuous production of the Y61 Patrol isn't for amusement purposes as the vehicle is one of the big sellers in the region.

In the United Arab Emirates, for example, the Patrol Super Safari Y61 has a base price of 178,000 AED, which translates to $48,461. While this price point might not raise eyebrows among North American readers accustomed to different market standards, it's essential to consider that the Patrol Safari is the definition of basic as you will be hard-pressed to even get navigation on some models.

Versatile And Robust Powertrain Powers This Body-On-Frame SUV

The Nissan Patrol Y61 has firmly cemented its position as the preferred vehicle for Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the United Nations (UN). Recognizing this significant role, Nissan has curated a collection of aid-specific models tailored to the requirements of these organizations. These specialized models are equipped with a diverse array of engine options, catering to varying needs across different trim levels. The engine displacements span a range from 2.8 to 4.8 liters, encompassing both four and six-cylinder configurations, available in either gasoline or diesel variants.

The Nissan Patrol Y61's extensive lineup of trim levels ensures that there is a model suited for every specific application. The available trims include STD, GL, GRX, Amsterdam Stock GL, and Ambulance. This comprehensive range caters to a spectrum of needs, from essential transport to advanced configurations required for specialized missions.

Specifically, the Patrol Safari is powered by a 4.8 liter inline six gas-powered engine producing 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Power translates to the wheels via a five-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic transmission. The Patrol's 4.8-liter gas engine is noticeably more powerful than its competitor the Land Cruiser 70 Series. As expected, the powerful six-cylinder gets horrendous gas mileage of 13 mpg when off-roading and 19 mpg in city driving.

Nissan Patrol Engine Specifications

The diverse engine line-up of the Patrol is held in high regard as reliable and durable, some Middle Eastern tuners have pushed the 4.8-liter engine to over 1000 horsepower. These tuners race the highly modified Patrols up the many steep dunes in the Middle Eastern region, A quick search on YouTube will yield many videos of modified Nissan Patrol beating supercars and recking dunes.

The Rugged Nissan SUV's Design Variation And Interior

The Patrol Y61 has always had an iconic design that has not changed much from the previous generation Y60. From the beginning, the Patrol has maintained a rugged boxy design that is functional and appealing . The Y61 received a light refresh in 2005 that saw new fender flares, headlights, and a larger taillight. The front is dominated by a long hood sheltering the beastly six-cylinder and a large bumper, a long side step makes it easy to step into the vehicle through the large doors.

The Nissan Y61 Patrol can be had as a four-door SUV or a two-door available in the Middle Eastern Region. The rear end features a split barn door with a spare tire housing mount on the right side, the rear of the Super Safari sports a spoiler at the edge of the back that adds to the visual appeal. Although rugged, the Patrol Super Safari does have a sunroof that offers a bit of modern creature comforts.

The interior of the Patrol is as simple as it is practical. The Patrol Safari comes with leather seats with leather door inserts contrasting the black dashboard. An 8.0-inch infotainment system takes center stage in the middle of the dash with silver contrasting sides. Unlike many modern luxury SUVs today, the Super Safari has a traditional shifter in the center console. The center armrest features a cool box to store your drink on those hot weather days.

Summing Up The Nissan Patrol

The Nissan Patrol Super Safari is an undeniable legend of offroading that very few have had the pleasure to experience due to its limited market availability and lack of modern-day creature comforts. This SUV exists in Nissan's portfolio of vehicles to serve individuals and organizations with a desire to go places many would dare not.

The Patrol is the last of a dying breed along with the 70 Series Land Cruiser that is unapologetically raw in its build concept, a vehicle that justifies the phrase " if its not broke, dont fix it". The fifth generation Y61 Patrol is a gentle reminder of a bygone era of automotive industry when manufacturers cared more about how well machines worked instead of pleasing the masses with plush interiors and unnecessary technology that distracts from the journey.

The legendary Nissan Patrol Y61 turns 25 this month

The Nissan Patrol Y61 celebrates 25 years

It could be said that the fifth-generation Nissan Patrol is a legend in its own right. Also known as the Y61 or GU, this SUV is a proper off-roader with its live axles, beefy exterior, and robust mechanicals. It’s been a while since it was discontinued here, but it’s still alive and kicking in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Latin America.

25 years ago, The Nissan Patrol Y61 was launched

So why are we bringing up the old Patrol here? That’s because this SUV celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. If you want to be more specific, the Y61 Patrol’s exact birthday is October 13, 1997, at least according to Nissan’s press archives. So, what was the first release model like? Let’s take a look at the spec sheet from its launch date.

OTHER STORIES YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: BMW iX3 electric crossover confirmed for PH market Hennessey has turned the Bronco Raptor into a 500hp beast

The Nissan Patrol Y61 was always available as a three-door

At the time of its launch, Nissan offered two body styles for the SUV, namely in three and five-door guises. There was also one gas and two turbodiesel options for the giant 4x4. These were the 4.5-liter, inline-six gas that made 200hp, the 2.8-liter straight-six diesel with 145hp, and the 4.2-liter turbodiesel that packed 160hp.

Nissan Patrol Y61 first release interior

Other features? It might not seem much these days but it came standard with dual airbags and anti-lock brakes. Interestingly, it even had a fuel cutoff system that kicked in just in case you rolled the thing over in the trail. Hey, stuff happens. But one thing Nissan was particularly proud of with the Y61 Patrol was its suspension articulation. At the time, Nissan claimed it had suspension travel of up to 220mm at the front and 240mm at the back. It’s why you get to see some Patrols do some crazy suspension dances when they’re rock crawling.

The Nissan Patrol Y61 celebrates 25 years

Since its launch 25 years ago, updates have been few and far between. The rather anemic 2.8-liter inline-six diesel was replaced with a 3.0-liter unit (aka the ZD30), and the 4.5-liter gas engine grew to 4.8-liters later in life. The Patrol also received a facelift in 2005, featuring a (slightly) more modern pair of headlights, a new grille, and larger tail lights. There hasn’t been a major update since then aside from the addition of stability control in select markets.

The Legend Edition of the Nissan Patrol Y61

The Y61 Patrol bowed out of the Philippine market in 2017, but not before going out with a bang with the Legend Edition . Since then, the only way to have a Patrol here is with V8 gas power . But if you head to Africa, Latin America, or the Middle East, you can still see these SUVs sitting proudly in showrooms, ready to take on whatever the elements can throw it. Heck, the United Nations still uses it as a patrol vehicle (no pun intended); a testament of its reputation for reliability and robustness.

We’re sad that the Y61 Patrol is no longer sold here, but we’re glad it lives on elsewhere. But in terms of longevity, this generation of Patrol still has one SUV to beat: the 70 Series Land Cruiser .

Now that’s a Big Test we’d love to do someday.

Driven in the UAE: 2021 Nissan Patrol Super Safari

Auto test drives.

Amidst clamour for luxury SUVs, this fabled iteration of an iconic off-roader stands tall

auto safari

Introduced towards the end of 1951, the Nissan 4W60 — later named Patrol — had a relatively slow start. But over the decades, helped by the much improved G60, the MQ, and the GQ iterations, the Patrol nameplate established itself as a badge to be reckoned with among off-road enthusiasts. However, it was the fifth-generation Y61 version that truly cemented its now legendary status as a go anywhere, do anything utility vehicle. While it was popular in markets such as Australia and South America too, in the Middle East, the Nissan Patrol almost became an integral part of the landscape. This was especially so here in the UAE. The Y61 Patrol Safari was so popular among the country’s off-roading enthusiasts that it was safe at the time to assume that it would only evolve at a pace similar to that of the Mercedes Gelandewagen. It seemed too good to be altered, and was etched into the collective psyche of the region’s dune-bashers.

However, as rival brands started churning out capable SUVs loaded with luxury trappings that appealed as much to the affluent city driver as it did to the daring explorer, the Safari started looking archaic. The modern, comfortable, luxurious, and sophisticated Y62 interpretation of the legendary Patrol was launched in 2010, complete with a new platform, a design overhaul, an interior that oozed luxury, a new V8 engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission and a new, more capable four-wheel drive system. Sales figures show that was a wise decision, but what seemed a wiser decision to Patrol aficionados was the one taken by the Japanese carmaker to keep the Y61 in production alongside the new version.

auto safari

The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line of the Y61 that is specific to the Middle East. While it essentially remains the same for the 2021 model year, a few tweaks and additions here and there have made sure it remains suitably updated. These include three new colour combinations, with a black exterior colour option joining the existing white and gold body colours. Also available as an option is a new gold accent across the roof, bumpers and spare tyre cover as an alternative to the dual tone accent from previous models, letting owners create the combination of their choice. The classic ‘Super Safari’ decal along the side of the car has also got a subtle refresh. New 17-inch alloy wheels with a ‘diamond cut’ pattern and black paint rounds out the exterior upgrades.

auto safari

The interiors of the 2021 Super Safari have also been updated with new tan leather and cloth options to choose from. If you choose the tan leather option, the seats come with a special Super Safari embossing. A new 8-inch display and audio system with Apple Carplay add a touch of modernity to the otherwise delectably utilitarian cabin.

auto safari

The rest of the good-old Safari remains the same. The 4.8-litre inline six-cylinder mated to five-speed automatic is superbly capable, refined and smooth on- and off-road. While an adventure-oriented three-door variant is still available, the five-door model is as practical and comfortable as any modern SUV and is still a great family car. It can easily seat seven passengers thanks to the two foldout cargo-area seats, which are also reasonably comfortable. It also comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in cool box, making it an ideal companion for impulsive detours into the wilderness with family or friends.

auto safari

And the rough country brings the best out of the Super Safari, with its straight-line drive transfer allowing on-the-fly shifting from 2WD to 4WD with just one shift of a lever. The navigation system, rear locking differential, front and rear-pintle tow hooks as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera make sure you are ready for anything that the mountains, the desert or the back woods throw at you. Stability control and a tyre-pressure monitor are standard, as are dual front airbags, ABS, an immobiliser and cruise control.

auto safari

A single model lasting six decades and still going strong is no mean feat. Not more than a handful of cars have managed to achieve this in the history of automobiles. And even as the Patrol nameplate keeps evolving in its successive iterations, if Nissan chooses to keep the Y61 going with periodic updates, there will still be takers. And they will tell you why this is one of the best SUVs on sale today.

Legendary 3-door Patrol Super Safari returns to Nissan line-up

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, July 12, 2017: Following the success of the relaunched Patrol Super Safari 5-door earlier this year, Nissan have once again responded to the demands of the Gulf’s 4WD-loving motorists. This time it’s the 3-door version of the Patrol Super Safari – also known as the  Hard Top version – that is being re-launched, to the delight of the region’s off-road enthusiasts.

“When we relaunched the Patrol Super Safari station wagon in March it was as a response to the demands of our customers who had both a deep sense of nostalgia for the vehicle and a genuine appetite to see its return,” explained Fadi Ghosn, Chief Marketing Officer of Nissan Middle East. “We quickly realised after the relaunch, however, that there was equally an appetite to see the return of the 3-door variant. As a company, we pride ourselves on our track record of listening and responding to our customers’ feedback.  The relaunch of the 3-door Patrol Super Safari is yet another example of that customer focus.”

Like its larger sibling, the 3-door Patrol Super Safari is packed with features designed with comfort, practicality, style, and desert performance in mind.

From a visual perspective, it’s hard to ignore the impressive machine cut, black 17” wheels framed by grey over fenders or the eye-catching red Super Safari graphics which adorn the vehicle’s flanks. There are two colour choices for the body, two-tone combinations of either grey and white or grey and gold, while inside an attractive tan interior is equally the sole option.

In engine terms, again there is only one choice in the form of Nissan’s proven 4.8L 6 inline cylinder DOHC unit which produces 280 HP and 451 Nm of torque. This is a power plant that gives a superb combination of serious power and massive torque for off-road applications for while returning reasonable fuel economy under normal road driving conditions. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) significantly enhance safety while driving on the highway over long distances at higher speeds.

New driver aids include a navigation system as well as front and rear parking sensors with rear view camera, Bluetooth, USB, CD, auxiliary input socket and FM/AM radio to complete the in-car entertainment offering.  The vehicle comes equipped with automatic climate control and a built-in, refrigerated cool box.

Dual front airbags, ABS, an immobilizer and cruise control are among the other features contributing to both safety and driver convenience, while the vehicle boasts rear locking differentials, front and rear tow hooks as standard equipment for desert use with an electric front winch available as an option.

Essentially, all of the classic on- and off-road driving capabilities and characteristics so beloved of generations of Gulf drivers have been retained in the relaunched Patrol Super Safari 3-door, while comfort, style and safety have been enhanced to create one of the most desirable and practical vehicles available in the region today.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 3-door Key Specifications:

• 4.8L 6-cyl in-line DOHC engine, max 280hp and 451Nm of torque

• 5 speed automatic transmission with manual mode

• Rear locking differentials, available electric front winch, front tow hook, rear pintle hook

Nissan y61 super safari modifications

By Danish Ali January 11, 2022 in Nissan Patrol GU/Y61

So I recently bought a Nissan y61 super safari, in the gulf region. After a few months of using the suv I’ve realised that it does feel abit under powered and the suspension to be on the stiff side. I’m willing to throw in some money for some suspension and performance mods. I’d like to be recommended a good suspension kit which actually improves its on road comfort. As far as the performance mods go, I want the suv to be able to make 400-500 horsepower. Of course with a turbo setup which is both reliable and reasonable. So guys please let me know the best suspensions available and what I can do to achieve the 400 hp mark
