In the UK, the school year is divided into three periods, called terms . In the US, the school year can be divided into two periods, called semesters , or three periods, called trimesters . Many US universities have summer periods, so their year is divided into quarters . Students have a timetable (UK)/ schedule (US) to tell them the times of their classes. To talk about what is taught in a particular subject area, we use the words syllabus or curriculum .

The person in charge of a school is called the headteacher in UK English and the principal in US English.

In a college or university, we use the word lecture for a lesson where a teacher speaks to many students in a large room called a lecture theatre (UK)/ lecture hall (US). A lesson for a smaller group is often called a seminar , while a lesson with just one or two students is a tutorial . In the US, a lesson for a group of students is called a class ; the class can be a large lecture, a small seminar, or something in between. We often use the verb attend with these words:

I attended several of her lectures.

A person who teaches at a college or university is called a lecturer in the UK and a teacher or a professor in the US. In the UK, the title Professor is only used for the most senior lecturers.

If you study a subject such as history or literature, you will certainly have to write essays . In the UK, a longer piece of writing, often done as part of a college or university course, is a dissertation , while the written work for a PhD is a thesis . Confusingly, in the US it is the other way round – with US students writing a master’s thesis and a doctoral dissertation . When you do a piece of writing, you may start with a rough draft (a basic plan) and you may need to do some research to find the facts you need.

Remember to use the verb do (not ‘write’ or ‘make’) with homework , and also that the word ‘homework’ is uncountable – don’t put ‘a’ in front of it or try to make it plural!  Your teacher sets (UK)/ assigns (US) your homework (tells you what to do), and you may have to hand it in (UK and US)/ turn it in (US) (give it to the teacher) the next day.

When your teacher is talking, you may make notes (write some things down) in a notebook so that you will remember what was said. You may use a textbook in class, with information about the subject you are studying. For subjects such as languages, you do exercises to practise what you are learning. For maths (UK)/ math (US), you may need to show your workings (UK)/ work (US) (write down how you reached the answer).

Finally, if you have an exam or a test (a small exam taken in class), you will need to revise (UK)/ review (US) what you have learned, to check that you can remember it.

I have a doubt concerning this post: are you sure a master’s thesis (US) is equivalent to a dissertation (UK)? (it sounds like you’re comparing them)

I don’t live in either US or UK but I thought a master’s thesis was a final piece of work you hand in to end a cycle and get a degree (meaning something you do only once in a course) whereas a dissertation is something you’re set to do in the middle of any course and any subject matter (that is, several times during a course).

Could you please further clarify this?

A “docent” is a person who guides people through a museum or such, explaining as they go. So why the heck why aren’t they just called “tour guides”? Why use a $50 word just because it’s a museum???

True, a common word would sound less pretentious, but it would also say less about the guide. “Docent” comes from the word “teacher.” A “guide,” like many VO talent, might just present a script, whereas (in principle, at least) a teacher knows what they’re talking about.

So, are you a docent?

First, let’s elaborate a bit on what we are talking about …

Another reason for saying “docent” is that the word also has other applications. It often designates an unpaid museum volunteer, or a parent assisting on a school field trip. In some countries, it refers to an associate professor.

Let’s also make clear that this question is relevant to more than museum tours, or tours of any sort. It’s also a valid issue in other genres, from eLearning to industrial explainers, and in online virtual tours, as well.

And while we’re at it, you might like to know that “docent” comes (by way of German, “Dozent”) from the Latin word “docēre. ” Incidentally, the English word “docile” – as in “she was a very docile pony” – does not mean “gentle” as some people think; it means “easily taught or trained,” and it comes from the same Latin root.

So now you can docent the word “docent”! (In which case you would also want to know that, grammatically, “docent” is only a noun, not correctly used as a verb. But plenty of people do.)

Where were we?

Oh, the distinction between a “teacher” and a “guide” – that should be obvious. A teacher typically knows their subject intimately. Whether they are holding class in a semester series, or leading tourists through a museum wing, a teacher knows much more about the subject than they are able to tell in such a brief time.

In contrast, a tour guide may be a lot like someone who narrates an audio tour. They may know only what’s in the script. A tour guide might know much more than that; they might even be an expert. But it’s not necessarily part of the job description. They may know just enough to answer some occasional standard questions.

How is it with you? If you specialize in museum tours (or historic walks, etc.), you might know your subject(s) inside-out. (Yes, you listeners of the former radio show “Car Talk,” there are jobs for an Art History degree!) But if you specialize in some other form of narration, or a wide range of audio tours, you can’t possibly be expert in all of the subjects you’re handed.

How, then, do you sound knowledgeable in them? Here’s a quick guide …

Be natural, be yourself, confident and friendly. Don’t be pompous or overly formal. By sounding natural, you sound comfortable – the comfort enjoyed by someone who knows what he or she is talking about. In contrast, if you sound stiff (the way some people think a teacher should sound), you don’t enhance the subject matter, you distract from it.

Be curious. The wider your view of the world, the deeper you’ll enjoy looking into all sorts of subjects, and the more likely you’ll know about a topic at-hand. It may also make you readier for new opportunities. But curiosity goes still deeper than that. The more interested you are in learning about things that are new to you, the more comfortable you’ll feel in your reading about them – whether aloud or to yourself.

Focus on your best prospects. If your client is a museum of modern art, it’s good to know about Rembrandt and Goya, but better to be up on your Giacometti and Lichtenstein.

Know your audience.

Are they the average tourist, or are they highly educated or sophisticated individuals? It may decide your approach to tone, but also to your interpretation of the script. Take, for example, an ironic reference to van Gogh’s ear. Some people aren’t aware that he lost it. Others will know and catch the irony. Others may consider any such ear reference to be a tasteless or corny joke. The same principle applies if your audience consists of medical experts, or people in a particular industry, and so on.

Remember your VO training. Exhibit-goers often include visitors from other countries, and the subject matter may involve unusual words or references. Your narration needs to be natural, but especially clear and unrushed. Appreciate the importance of emotion and nuance. An audio tour is more like hearing one side of a conversation, rather than it is a lecture. At appropriate points, give your listener time to pause, view or react.

In other words, be a docent. Sound — as if you were there in person — like you’re ready, eager and able to answer their questions.

QB Shedeur Sanders attends first in-person lecture at Colorado after more than a year

U niversity of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders attended an in-person lecture on campus for the first time recently, more than a year after he enrolled as a student, according to a video posted to his YouTube channel Wednesday.

The video shows him being trailed by videographers as he enters a chemistry class in Boulder, then causing a quiet stir during the lecture as some fellow students notice him and the cameras.

“Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve been to one in-person class?” Sanders says in the video after leaving the lecture hall.

His nine-minute video is entitled, "Shedeur Sanders Attends In-Person Lecture For First Time."

This does not mean he hadn’t attended classes at all. Just not in-person.

But then college is not what it used to be.

Just ask Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders, Colorado’s head football coach .

In January, “Coach Prime” spoke about this during a podcast with host Bret Boone, his former baseball teammate with the Cincinnati Reds.

“It’s so different now man because most of the school is online,” Deion Sanders said. “Like, they go to classes and I’m like, 'You guys are missing the best part of college − to be on campus, to walk around and build the atmosphere and build relationships on campus with other students outside of football.' That’s the best part of it, but now you have so many kids, they’re just online. I don’t even know if Shedeur has partaken a class on campus in his college career.”

Shedeur Sanders is a senior sociology major at Colorado in his second year at the university after transferring from Jackson State and enrolling at CU in January 2023.

“It’s actually not all that uncommon, especially for student-athletes, whose schedules with class, practice, and competition can get really complex,” CU Boulder spokesman Steve Hurlbert said in response to a question about online-only learning at the university.

Shedeur Sanders has additional responsibilities in the meantime. He is in middle of spring football practice, which concludes with the annual spring game on April 27.

George Perkovich, the Ken Olivier and Angela Nomellini Chair and vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace , gave a lecture on 20 March at the FRIB Laboratory. Perkovich’s lecture is part of MSU’s Distinguished Nuclear Policy Lecture series. As part of his visit, Sean Liddick, associate professor of chemistry at FRIB and in MSU’s Department of Chemistry, and FRIB associate director for experimental science, hosted Perkovich on a tour of the facility and discussed FRIB’s history, progress, science, and technology along the way. 

The “Does Nuclear Arms Control with Russia and China Have a Future?” abstract states: “Nuclear arms control for the foreseeable future will be hindered by polarized politics that impact compromise with foreign adversaries and internal opponents, and by the emergence of new technologies and multi-party rather than bilateral strategic contests. This presentation will explore how these processes confound military planners, political leaders, and diplomatic negotiators in each country who would have to figure out what sorts of arms control bargains are desirable and acceptable. History suggests ways to overcome these obstacles, but the pathways to be navigated today are more challenging.”

Perkovich, who oversees Carnegie’s Technology and International Affairs Program and Nuclear Policy Program, works primarily on nuclear strategy and nonproliferation issues, cyberconflict, and new approaches to international public-private management of strategic technologies. He is the author of the prize-winning book, India’s Nuclear Bomb (University of California Press, 1999), and co-author of, Not War, Not Peace? Motivating Pakistan to Prevent Cross-Border Terrorism (Oxford University Press, 2016). 

Perkovich’s short-form writing has appeared in leading international journals and newspapers. He has advised many agencies of the U.S. government, and testified before both houses of Congress. He has been a member of the National Academy of Science’s Committee on Arms Control and International Security, the Council on Foreign Relations Task Force on Nuclear Policy, and was a principal adviser to the International Commission on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament, a joint initiative of the governments of Japan and Australia. He served as a speechwriter and foreign policy adviser to Senator Joe Biden (D-Del.) from 1989-90.

Horses for Courses: Green jacket winners mean 'go' at Augusta National

A tradition unlike any other, the Masters Tournament opens the major championship portion of the annual PGA TOUR schedule.

Founded in Augusta, Georgia, Augusta National Golf Club opened its doors in 1934. Designed by Dr. Alister Mackenzie and Bobby Jones, the 2024 scorecard reflects the commitment to the modern game. Playing to 7,555 yards, 10 more yards than 2023, the par-72 will play the longest in history, but other changes will be prevalent this week.

The addition of yards on the scorecard comes from a new tee box on No. 2. Modified green contours on the second, fourth and sixth holes add extra challenges to an already demanding front nine. The back nine is where the fireworks happen annually, but arriving at Amen Corner in contention with a chance is the first order of business. Players with experience in those moments from past Sundays have a major advantage this week.

Scottie Scheffler (+400) needed only three tries to ace this examination. In 16 career rounds, he’s posted 72 or better 14 times and has never finished outside T19 (2020). Defending his title last year in his fourth visit, he added his second top-10 payday with T10. The Texan, joined by Matt Fitzpatrick (+3300), are the only two players to square less than 20 bogeys over the last two editions. Only Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth have a better career scoring average (more than 10 rounds played).

Jon Rahm (+1200): Making his eighth trip, the 2023 reigning champion has never had to request an early checkout. Joining his countrymen Ballesteros, Olazabal, and Garcia donning the green jacket last year, the Spaniard has five top-10 paydays from seven previous visits. Playing 28 rounds, his scoring average of 70.50 is the best of the qualified players who have posted between 25 and 49 career rounds. The two-time major champion has produced the lowest or second-lowest round in two of the last three editions.

Players listed are in the field this week; 2024 season stats.

The ultimate second-shot golf course, Augusta National requires every tool in the bag. Uneven lies in the middle of the fairway, let alone from the second cut, will test the resolve and execution of the best ball-strikers. Controlling the golf ball into the right spots on the greens with the correct trajectory and spin will create scoring chances. Finding Greens in Regulation, usually below the hole, will help to keep bogeys off the card. The water penalty areas, five in total, start at No. 11 on the back nine.

Patrick Reed (+6600) , who putted the dimples off the ball in his victory in 2018, is the only winner in the last 10 years not to finish T7 or better for the week in this category. Cashing in the top 10 three times in his last four visits, including T4 in 2023, proves his game translates in Georgia.

Par-4 Scoring Average

Everyone will score on the four par-5s, but the 10 par-4s provide one of the toughest challenges annually on TOUR. Not including the 2020 November event, Augusta National has ranked in the top four in five of the last six years. The only year outside the top four was the 2021 edition (T8). Grinding out pars and keeping the big numbers off the card will allow the results on the par-5s to add separation instead of trying to mitigate damage.

The only player under 40 with more top-10 finishes than Jordan Spieth (+2200) has never set foot inside Butler Cabin. Finishing T2 on debut in 2015, the Texan became the second-youngest winner (Tiger Woods, 1997). Posting 270 during his win, he tied Tiger Woods for the tournament scoring record and became the first player to put 19-under par on the board. The three-time major champion has made the cut in nine of 10 starts and cashed T4 or better six times, including two of the last three years.

In November 2020, Dustin Johnson (+4000) posted 20-under, the lowest tournament total, to win his first green jacket and secure his fifth top-10 finish.

A gust of wind, an uneven lie, or indecision will lead to plenty of missed GIR. When missing the target, the ability to play check-check-stop, bump-and-run, or the flop shot will keep the momentum rolling. The other half of this equation is holing putts once the ball is on the green. Which way is Rae’s Creek? Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing in this green slope? Experience is a fantastic 15th club to possess from tee box to hole location this week. Ironically, the only winner from the last 10 not to register in the top 16 was five-time winner Tiger Woods (+150000). The last three winners in April ranked first or second in Scrambling.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) claimed his green jacket on his 10th attempt. The Japanese star has only one finish outside T19 from his last nine consecutive weekends and has cashed in 11 of 12 trips. Pounding GIR and getting up and down from everywhere reduces the pressure off his putter. The only winner from Asia, he enters the week with a scoring average of 71.54 in 46 rounds.

Rory McIlroy (+1000) is the only highlighted non-winner this week. Signing for top-10 paychecks in seven of 15 visits, he is the highest-ranked player on the all-time money list without a win. Only Woods and three-time winner Phil Mickelson (+20000) have produced more top-10 results of those expected to challenge this week. Missing the cut in 2021 broke a run of 10 consecutive weekends. Closing with 64 in 2022, he snuck in the back door to claim second place, his best result. Missing the cut in 2023 changed his preparation for this year’s event.

Oddsmaker’s Extras

• Xander Schauffele (+1400): Finishing tied for second on debut in 2019 to Woods, this Californian has added T10 and T3 in two of his last three visits. More than comfortable on the grounds, over 22 rounds, his career scoring average is 71.32.
• Brooks Koepka (+2000): Joining Schauffele as co-runner-up in 2019, the five-time major champion is still looking for his first green jacket. Last year he led by two shots after 54 holes, but a disappointing Sunday round of 75 knocked him to T2 again. Missing the cut in two of his last three attempts was due to a balky knee, no longer an issue holding him back.
• Jason Day (+6600): The Australian exploded onto the scene in 2011. Posting a second-round 64 on debut, he was left behind by Charl Schwartzel’s four birdies in the final four holes yet shared second. From 2011 through 2019, he cashed outside T20 twice, T22 and T28. Missing the cut in 2021, the 2015 PGA Champion opened with 67 last year before fading to T39.
• Tony Finau (+4000): Signing for T10 or better in three of his first four visits, the big hitter has cooled with T26 and T35 in the last two tournaments. Never missing a cut in six tries and posting a 71.33 scoring, it’s obvious his game translates.
• Corey Conners (+6600): The Canadian will be looking to join countryman Mike Weir as the only winners from north of the border. Missing the cut last season after winning the Valero Texas Open the week prior, he snapped a streak of three years running with a top-10 finish. He won’t have that problem to worry about this week!

One of the oldest hotels in Hong Kong is the definition of luxury. 13 photos offer a glimpse inside Art Basel's hotel partner, The Peninsula.

• The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong, an iconic property that opened in 1928, offers a luxury experience.
• The hotel boasts nine restaurants, a spa, a mall featuring high-end brands, and over 50 suites.
• The Peninsula also offers unique experiences like the Art in Resonance program and a helicopter pad used by celebrities.

Steps away from the glistening Victoria Harbour sits the Peninsula Hotel.

The flagship hotel in the Peninsula Hotels group, which boasts properties worldwide, opened in December 1928, making it one of the oldest hotels in Hong Kong. The original building only housed six floors and was the tallest building in the city when it was built.

Now, the hotel has a 30-story tower, more than 50 hotel suites, nine restaurants and lounges, a spa, and what they call a "shopping arcade," or an intimate mall featuring Chanel, Harry Winston, and other luxury brands.

The iconic hotel, one of the official hotel partners of Art Basel Hong Kong , sponsored by the global lead partner UBS, is nestled right on the Kowloon Peninsula in Tsim Sha Tsui. Thanks to their Art in Resonance program, it's also home to four memorable art pieces featuring "emerging and mid-career" artists. I toured the 5-star hotel and saw exactly why the Peninsula provides the best in hospitality and accommodations, from the hotel's helicopter pad, which has welcomed Bon Jovi and Tom Cruise, to the gym that Madonna specially requested be outfitted in the hotel's biggest suite.

When you first walk up to the hotel, you're greeted by an art installation in the hotel's signature green.

Kingsley Ng, a visual artist based in Hong Kong, was the creator behind the art installation affixed to the hotel's exterior. During Art Basel, " Esmeralda ," as it's titled, was unveiled revealing a sky-high art moment that mimics water waves.

You're also greeted by a fleet of Rolls-Royce cars.

Before you enter the hotel, guests know they'll be treated to a luxury experience thanks to the Rolls-Royce fleet parked outside. The hotel has 14 Rolls-Royce Extended Wheelbase Phantoms on hand for guests to use.

Every car is in the hotel's signature green with a peanut butter leather and wood paneling interior.

The cars are facing two stone Chinese lions, placed outside the hotel for protection, according to Kylie Cheung, the hotel's assistant director of communications.

There's also a vintage Rolls-Royce tucked away in the hotel's basement.

Housed in the garage is the hotel's most precious member of the fleet, a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II , a tailor-made car that belongs to the Kadoorie family. The family owns the Peninsula Hotel Group along with China Light and Power, an electricity company servicing most of Hong Kong.

The car, built in antique fashion, is preserved beautifully. I got a chance to sit inside the car, to feel the buttered leather under my hands. There's even a rotary telephone inside the vehicle, a call back to an earlier time before cellular phones and devices.

The hotel lobby is lavish. It features tall white columns with 76 hand-painted gargoyles on top.

Walking inside the hotel, you're met with two sides, both for dining.

The hotel's communications director told Business Insider that the middle of the lobby was previously used as a dance floor and that men and women would sit separately on two sides "so as not to cause embarrassment."

Today, the lobby is the place for the hotel's famous afternoon tea , held from 2-6 p.m. local time for a minimum cost of $350 Hong Kong dollars, or around $44. The all-day menu features an assortment of salads, pastas, sandwiches, and what they call "Asian specialties."

The lobby also houses an art installation by French artist Elise Morin. The art dune-shaped piece, titled "SOLI," comprises broken CDs, a nod to the piece's sustainable message.

The 300-room hotel has over 50 suites, including its finest, the Presidential Suite.

BI toured two of the hotel's suites, including the 4,000-square-foot Presidential Suite that's welcomed presidents, billionaires, and business leaders, according to Cheung.

The room, number 2608, is the picture of opulence thanks to marble floors, an executive dining table, a piano, and custom-made furniture.

Walking in, you're greeted by artwork, a 2011 wooden sculpture by Sun Yi titled "Dancer II." To the left is a media room where guests can relax and enjoy a movie.

If you'd rather look at the Harbour, floor-to-ceiling windows and a terrace offer the perfect unobstructed view.

A gym, specially requested by Madonna, sits in one of the suite's rooms.

As you move through the suite's dining room, if you walk too fast, you might miss the hidden full-sized kitchen, which features Miele appliances, a wine fridge, and an espresso machine .

Along with a bedroom comes a his-and-hers closet and bathroom. There's also a gym, the brainchild of Madonna. Yes, that Madonna.

When she stayed at The Peninsula, she didn't want to go downstairs to the gym, Cheung told BI, with the other hotel guests, and requested a gym be built inside the suite for her. It's stayed there ever since.

The cost for the entire suite? A mere $234,000 HKD or around $29,900 per night.

A smaller suite, costing about $2,000 per night, includes a spacious vanity area and closet.

If that price tag gave you a bit of sticker shock, don't worry. There are plenty of smaller, more affordable suites that aren't as grandiose as the Presidential Suite but are elegant all the same.

One of the smaller suites I saw included a dining room table, a living room with a faux fireplace, and a sitting area in the bedroom, along with a roomy closet and vanity area. The room even came with a nail dryer in case you need an impromptu manicure.

Outside The Verandah, a buffet-style restaurant, sits another art installation.

Lachlan Turczan, a native of Los Angeles, created one of my favorite art pieces with his water sculpture titled "Harmonic Resonance."

This kinetic sculpture moves water , thanks to submersible low-frequency vibrations.

When staring at the drum, I felt a sense of calm, feeling the remnants of the vibration through my feet. Looking at the sculpture reminded me that every cause has an effect.

A tucked-away music room also serves as the hotel's archive.

With such a history, the Peninsula Hotel also houses an archive of its achievements. It also serves as a soundproof room for the many musicians who've stayed at the hotel.

The hotel houses nine restaurants and lounges, featuring different cuisines.

Dining is one of the best aspects of staying at the Peninsula Hotel. The hotel boasts nine restaurants and lounges with two restaurants earning a Michelin star.

A Swiss chalet inspired Chesa, a manager told Business Insider. In fact, the entire interior of the restaurants was flown in from Switzerland.

There's also Spring Moon, which has earned a Michelin star and features Cantonese on its menu, a Japanese-inspired restaurant named Imasa, and Felix, which boasts "Contemporary European" cuisine, according to the hotel's website.

There are also two lounges, The Bar, and The Lobby, which I previously mentioned, and The Peninsula Boutique & Café that serves coffees and delicate pastries.

There's a reason Gaddi's has a Michelin star.

Business Insider tried a six-course meal at the French restaurant Gaddi's, led by Chef Albin Gobil. He recently earned a Michelin star, and it's easy to see why.

He's clearly a thoughtful artist who doesn't skip any detail regarding presentation. He also served a foie gras that was my best this year.

The experience is complemented by a dining room featuring chandeliers and textiles from the Ming dynasty, part of the private Kadoori family collection.

While shopping in the arcade, don't miss Saya Woolfalk's art installation.

According to on-site materials, Woolfalk's " Visionary Reality Portal ," is created by two kaleidoscope videos, 3D animation, live action, and hand-painted paper. The installation is meant to mimic the stained glass of churches.

Guests can skip Hong Kong traffic by landing at the hotel's private helipad.

Before walking out to the hotel's helipad, guests are treated to a small museum documenting the history of the China Clipper. The first plane, which could only go up about 10,000 feet in the air, lasted 10 years starting in 1935.

It's an area used for private dining and for going over safety precautions for anyone about to board the hotel's helicopter. And a few famous faces, including Tom Cruise and Bon Jovi, have walked this corridor since a helicopter is only an 18-minute ride from the city's airport, operator Paul Leigh, who's worked at the hotel for 30 years in various capacities, told Business Insider.

For any Batman fans, you might recognize the helipad from a 10-second shot in Christopher Nolan's 2008 film, "The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader and the late Heath Ledger as Joker.
