They Were At The Peak of Their Career

On October 19, 1977, Southern rock titans Lynyrd Skynyrd performed the final show with their classic lineup at South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Auditorium – this was just two days after the release of their fifth studio album Street Survivors . A day after the concert, they boarded the a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft en route to their next gig in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

While flying over Mississippi, it ran out of fuel and crashed during an emergency landing killing three members of the band – lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines. The assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray also died while 20 others sustained injuries but survived.

Before the flight, everyone was nervous about flying in a rickety plane. But according to Gary Rossington, “Ronnie said, ‘Hey, if the Lord wants you to die on this plane, when it’s your time, it’s your time. Let’s go, man. We’ve got a gig to do.”

We couldn’t find footage of their last show but we do have the full concert footage of their July 13, 1977 performance at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. Check it out below.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Live 1977

Lynyrd Skynyrd Live Asbury Park 1977 was one of the shows on the long and grueling tour for the band that year. The 1977 Tour began in January, and had a relentless schedule through most of that year.

Skynyrd had just finished up the European leg of the tour, the last of 21 shows being in Hamburg, Germany on March 1. There had been a short, 5 show Asian Tour before that, with all of the shows being in Japan.

The North American leg of the tour kicked off on April 22, in Johnson City, TN at the Freedom Hall Civic Center. They were still promoting and touring behind the release of their highly acclaimed live album, One More From The Road. It was released in September, 1976.

Their previous studio album, Gimme Back My Bullets, had just been released in February, 1976, less than a year before this tour started. It was the only album that Lynyrd Skynyrd released that had only two guitar layers. Those being original members Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins.

“Bullets” was recorded after Guitarist Ed King Left the band, and before the addition of Steve Gaines. Skynyrd was at the peak of their popularity, and definitely as strong as every sound and performance-wise.

This show was towards the end of the North American leg of the tour. After the Asbury Park 1977 show they would have about 5 weeks off the road before going back out for another stretch of shows.

This concert was on July 13 at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Asbury Park 1977 Setlist

The setlist for this show, and for most of the tour since Skynyrd didn’t change their song list much, was mostly from their earlier albums. Containing several already classics, and fan-favorites.

Three songs were included from the upcoming album, Street Survivors, scheduled to be released in October of that year. The list contained no songs from their most recent studio album, Gimme Back My Bullets.
