7.3L Fluid Specs & Capacity Guide
1994-2003 Ford SuperDuty Diesel Oil & Fluid Capacity And Recommendations
Part of obeying a strict 7.3L Powerstroke maintenance schedule is putting the right fluids and oils into your truck. You also need to know just how much oil or fluid your 7.3 calls for! Don’t worry, i’ve got you covered. In this post, our 7.3L Powerstroke Fluid and Oil Capacity Guide, I’ll tell you exactly how much and what type of oil or fluid you need. That means the exact 7.3 Powerstroke OEM Fluid and specifications from Ford. By using our recommended fluids and correctly filling your truck’s components, you’ll be able to extend the useful life of your truck.
How Much Oil And Fluid Do I Need in my 7.3l Powerstroke?
Although 7.3L Powerstroke Fluid Capacity and specifications are listed here, it’s very important to consult your owner’s manual just to be sure! Also, always use your dipstick to determine when your 7.3 has the correct oil or fluid. Depending on your axle, fluid fill specifications vary. Check the owner’s manual to get the proper fluid fill recommendations. 7.3L Powerstroke Online owner’s manuals and diesel supplements are available for free.
What is the best Oil And Fluid To use on my 7.3L?
To keep your 7.3 running strong, we recommend using OEM fluids for just about everything. There is a little bit of flexibility with engine oil. You may need a different viscosity if you are in extremely cold climates. You do not have to go with Motorcraft 15W40 however. There are many good 15W40 engine oils made specifically for a diesel.

Rear diff fluid capacity
- Add to quote
What is the gear oil capacity for my rear diff? I can't seem to find the right info in my manual. It's an '02 F350 with the limited slip. Thanks all, Peter
You don't mention which F-350 you have, and it makes a difference. If you have single rear wheels (SRW), then your Ford "Sterling" diff holds 6.9 pints of gear oil. But if you have dual rear wheels (DRW), then your Dana 80 rear end holds 8.3 pints. Ford says to add friction modifier additive if you have limited slip. In one place they say 4 ounces, and in another place they say 8 ounces. I wouldn't add any until after you button it up with the fresh lube, drive several miles, and then do a figure-eight test on dry clean parking lot pavement. If you don't get the clatter/chatter/racket from the rear end during full-lock turns, then you don't need any friction modifier. If you do get the racket (caused by a tire dragging around a sharp turn instead of rolling), then I would add one ounce at a time and retest. Too much friction modifier will turn your LS rear end into an open axle. So that's why I would add one ounce at a time instead of just dumping in the whole 4 or 8 ounces.
Sorry about that....it's a SRW with the Sterling diff. Does the 6.9 pint capacity include the extra ounces of the friction modifier, or is that in addition to the 6.9? Thanks for the info!

Got a bit of seepage around the housing so may change it again and no additive this time. Ian
[ QUOTE ] Does the 6.9 pint capacity include the extra ounces of the friction modifier, or is that in addition to the 6.9? [/ QUOTE ] 6.9 pints (3.3L) is the total capacity. I would pour in 3 quarts (or 3 liters if you're in Canada) then test it and determine if you need friction modifier. After you have the right amount of friction modifier mixed in and tested, then top it off with diff lube.

Tuapse Refinery in Krasnodar Krai has formed a part of the vertically integrated structure of Rosneft since its inception. This is the only Russian refinery located on the Black Sea coast, and it is also one of the oldest: it was put into operation in 1929.
The program of modernization of the Tuapse Refinery is being implemented in three phases:
- 1 st construction phase — within the processing unit (section) ELOU-AVT-12 (with the capacity of 12 million tons/year for oil) and off-site facilities;
- 2 nd construction phase — within the processing units (sections) for vacuum gas oil hydrocracking, diesel hydrofining, sulfur production, hydrogen production, gasoline hydrotreatment, reforming, isomerization and off-site facilities;
- 3 d construction phase — within the processing unit (section) for Flexicoking and off-site facilities.
After the completion of the modernization program, the oil refining depth will increase from 54% to 98.7%.
In Q4 2013, within the framework of implementation of the project for construction of the new refinery, a crude oil distillation unit ELOU-AVT-12 and other facilities of the 1st start-up complex were commissioned in the territory of the Tuapse refinery).
- For 2 nd phase facilities — development of working documentation was completed, the construction and assembly works were under way.
- For 3 d phase facilities — development of working documentation was under way. Modernization of the Tuapse refinery all allow to satisfy the growing needs for high-quality motor fuels of the Russian South. Furthermore, considering the unique geographic position and transshipment capacities of the Company in Tuapse, the potential for alternative export of crude oil will be expanded.
In 2014, the summary Investorsments into the Tuapse Refinery totaled 57 billion rubles net of VAT.

This is a quick how-to for changing your own rear differential oil. this will save you about $40 or so from taking it to a shop. 1)loosen bolts (dont remove) all around diff cover and allow fluid to drain. 2)after done draining, remove diff cover and set off to side. 3)inspect gears for chipped teeth and look in carriage for debris. clean anything out that doesnt belong. 4)replace new gasket or use RTV (black) and put cover back on. NOTE: if you are using RTV to create a gasket then wait 1hr after putting cover on to let dry. 5)find fill plug and open (should just require 3/8 ratchet, no socket needed, and maybe 3" extension). 6)Fill using owner's manual preferred oil. Trust me, its in there. FOR 01 EXPY WITH 9.75 REAR....75W140 FULL SYNTHETIC WITH OIL FRICTION MODIFIER...JUST OVER 3QTS. And there you have it. It just cost you $75 and about 1hr (drain time, wait time on RTV, and fill time) to do the same job that most places charge $110+tax. I will have some pics to follow.

nice write-up with pics
thanks man. just thought i would let everyone know how easy it was. panda, i used valvoline from napa. it was $14 a bottle (buy 4 of them) and i only bought one bottle of 4oz modifier, but buy the 7oz instead. royal purple was super expensive. i bought the valvoline cuz it said compatible with ford...it shouldnt really matter what brand, as long as you buy the recommended weight. it should be on something like page 252 in your book. just look up fluids and it will tell you the page to find the levels and types. i believe most of the expys take the 75w140 FULLY SYNTHETIC.
that what mine takes. i just didnt know what brand you used. a lot of options out there. ill see what oreileys recommends.
i called kragen (oreilly's) and they said they had some royal purple. its $17 a bottle. you can do this as cheap or as expensive as you want. but i think you are just paying for the name in my opinion.

Reuters: Tuapse refinery hit by drone resumes work after 3 months of repairs
Rosneft's Tuapse oil refinery has resumed processing after sustaining damage from a drone strike in January, Reuters reported on May 6, citing industry sources.
A fire broke out at the Tuapse facility on Jan. 25 following reports of a drone attack. Multiple strikes on oil depots in Russia, including in Bryansk , Oryol , and Leningrad oblasts, were reported in January, amid increasing claims of drone attacks in Russian regions bordering Ukraine.
Two industry sources told Reuters that the Rosneft plant in Tuapse has resumed operations. Repairs were completed at the facility's primary oil refining unit CDU-12 at the end of April, they said.
According to the sources, the unit's capacity totals around 250,000 barrels per day (bpd). The refinery processed 20,000 metric tons of oil on May 1, they claimed.
Rosneft's Tuapse refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai is one of the largest oil processing plants in southern Russia.
Ukraine has escalated attacks against Russia's oil industry in recent months, successfully reducing the processing capacities of multiple facilities.

Definitely NOT a 10.5L Sterling, which makes the literature wrong. Looks like you need 4.0L of 75w-90 synthetic oil. Depending on brand you may need to add ~8 oz of friction modifier, Ford calls theirs XL-3. Some synthetic oils come with friction modifier, so you may not need it.
20. Location. Poconos PA. I know the procedures. I'm asking here about the fluid to be used. I have a 2017 Expedition Limited. Front differential - 80w90 with no friction modifier. Rear Differential - 75w 140 synthetic, with friction modifier 2.75 quarts (3). Transfer Case - XL12 transfer case fluid. 2 quarts.
The 9.75" rear diff calls for SYNTHETIC SAE 75W-140 (with or without Traction-Lok). The 8.8" diff calls for Synthetic SAE 75W-140 with Traction-Lok or non-synthetic SAE 75W-90 without Traction-Lok. If you have a front diff Ford specs a non-synthetic SAE 75W-90 for the front diff. Reply Like. # 6. 06-26-2011, 09:52 AM.
Kentucky. It is very simple. Unscrew the fill plug first and then unscrew the drain plug. I highly suggest putting a torch on the plugs. Ford uses red loctite and I buggered mine up and had to buy new ones. Put your drain plug back in, pump new oil in, then put the fill plug back in. And you are done.
Before I bring it in, I thought I would change out the read diff fluid since I have done some research on the forums. I crawled underneath and found the info on the rear diff is 3L73 - 9.75. I see the drain plug and fill plug. I purchased the recommended Motorcraft gear oil and 4oz of friction modifier.
