What are the different types of travel feeding seats.

There are different options of travel feeding seats available. The main four are travel highchairs, travel booster seats which fold up for easy transporting, table clamp seats and seat harnesses which are usually made of durable fabric.

Travel highchairs can sit on top of a dining chair, so that your child can join you at the table. Or there are some travel highchairs which are freestanding but fold up and can be taken out for the day or on holiday.

Travel booster seats attach to a dining chair and can be folded up compactly. They are great as they usually have a handle which makes them easy to carry and they are also lightweight and some have room for storing items such as nappies and wipes.

Table clamp seats are another compact and lightweight option are great if you are eating out at a restaurant or at family or friends. They easily clamp onto most tables and are strong and ideal for letting your child sit straight up to the table with the adults. It saves you having to ask for highchairs at restaurants too.

Seat harnesses are fabric which wraps around your baby and the chair, holding them in place. They won’t give your child any height on the chair so if they are very small this may not be the first choice for you.

Following six months of liquid breakfasts, lunches and dinners, your baby may be ready for weaning. That means it’s time to buy the best high chair you can find.

As with most baby-related purchases, there’s often an intimidating number of options available, with different features and coming in at a range of prices. Do you opt for a lightweight design that’s easy to pack away for storage? A high chair that will serve your child from six months to 10 years old? And what’s your finish of choice – plastic or a natural material?

How to choose the best high chair for your baby, is my baby ready for weaning.

Some babies are ready to try solid foods from around four-to-five months, but according to the  NHS guidelines what they can and can’t eat is restrictive at this time. However, by six months, almost all solid foods are on the table. Your baby must be able to sit upright with their head held steady, without support, and other signs that they might be ready for solid food include chewing and swallowing motions without the tongue-thrust reflex pushing objects out of the mouth, as well as curiosity about what you’re eating. If you’re seeing all these signs pretty consistently, then chances are your baby is ready to move from a liquid to solid diet.

You’re probably best to get a high chair just before your baby starts showing these signs, so you’re ready to go with puréed fruit as soon as they’re ready. Many high chairs are designed for babies who can support themselves, although a handful can be used as reclining seats for younger babies until they’re ready for weaning.

What types of high chairs are there?

There are three basic types of high chair :

How long will I need a high chair for?

Depending on your child’s height and confidence with sitting, you’ll be using your high chair three to five times daily for around 18 months. As such, it’s worth getting one that will comfortably fit your baby for this period, and will last the distance. This is the reason it’s sometimes worth spending a little extra. Most high chairs fit children up to around three years old, but it’s likely your child will be sitting on a standard dining chair before then – most children will use a high chair from six months to around two years.

What essential features should I look for?

As well as easy-to-clean surfaces, the best high chairs keep your baby from slipping out of the bottom. Many high chairs feature a safety harness of the kind you find in a buggy, while others have integral waist and leg straps to keep baby in place.

A tray makes it possible to feed your baby in any room of the house (to begin with, we recommend having lunch in the easiest room to clean) and doubles up as a play surface for toys and drawing. Adjustable seats mean you can choose a height that’s comfortable for you from which to assist baby eat.

What else do I need to buy?

So you’ve chosen a high chair, now what? Regardless of whether you’re spoon-feeding your baby or going down the path of baby-led weaning, there are a couple of essentials you’ll need. These include bowls, spoons, a cup and bibs. It helps to have at least two of each so one can be washed while the other is being used. There are dozens of options to choose from, but we recommend a pair of plastic, bamboo, or silicone bowls; a plate with compartments; a pair of training spoons; a sippy cup; a pair of bibs with a catch tray (also typically made of silicone); and a pair of wearable bibs for when you’re ready to let them get messy. You could also opt for a weaning mat, which sits underneath the high chair to catch all the falling food to make cleaning up that little bit easier.

For years, the iconic Stokke Tripp Trapp won over the hearts of countless families who wanted a chair that would grow with their child, but now the brand has outdone itself with the Nomi – a high chair that can be used from birth right up to adulthood. While the fundamentals of both chairs are similar, the Nomi feels more streamlined, provides better support, and – in our tester’s opinion – has a more comfortable seat, making it the superior option.

For young babies, parents can purchase the newborn set, which allows your little one to be close to you in every room – whether that’s the kitchen, at the table, in the office, or while you’re getting ready in the bathroom. The baby set can then be used from six months. This includes a scooped-out seat, made from wipe-clean recyclable plastic, which provides exceptional back and side support for little ones as they learn to sit and eat with you. As your child grows, the Nomi becomes a chair that’s perfect for desks, reading, activities at the table, and so much more. The seat and footrest offer supreme comfort and can be adjusted at the simple twist of a knob.

Cleaning couldn’t be easier, either. With no PVC or fabric, or pockets or corners in which crumbs can become stuck, everything can be wiped down with ease. After weeks of use, ours looks as clean as the day it arrived.

The lightweight chair sits on anti-tilt wheels, which make it easy to move it from room to room, but which also prevent the chair from tipping over, no matter how active your toddler might be at dinnertime. The harness offers extra security – this is considered an “extra” and is perhaps something (in our opinion) that should just be included as standard.

Yes, the Stokke commands a hefty price tag – particularly when you consider all the add-ons. But taking into account that this chair will serve for a good number of years, we think it’s worth the investment.

2. Graco Snack N’ Stow: Best value high chair

Graco is something of a go-to brand for families all over the world, and for good reason. Its price-accessible baby staples include the Snack N’ Stow high chair – a lightweight, agile, standalone design that offers one of the most compact and slimline folds we found in testing.

Everything about this high chair felt easy – it’s easy to put together, easy to clean, and even easier to fold away. Our only suggestion? Some clips to keep the legs together once it’s folded would have been beneficial – but with a price tag that starts at £40, we can’t complain. The wipe-clean seat is available in five different prints, although you’ll spot that some designs are more expensive than others. Getting baby in and out is straightforward, too, since the tray can be moved into three different positions. While some high chairs can feel a little too reclined, our 9-month-old tester certainly seemed comfortable in the Snack N’ Stow, helped along by the softly padded seat and two-position footrest; plus the harness offered extra security to keep her upright. Overall, a real home hero – and a great chair to keep at granny’s house.

As the name suggests, this parent-favourite has six different modes, including three recline options (with cushioned newborn insert) that let you keep your young baby near you while in the kitchen. As they get older and you start weaning, the seat can be placed more upright with a tray table attached.

The seat then detaches and acts as a booster seat, either with or without the tray table; or, the seat can be removed completely, giving your child a seat in which to sit and play, or the option to sit up at the table. Our toddler tester loved the independence of sitting at a regular dining room chair on this booster seat with his brother, while we liked the fact this seat keeps him a little more secure. What’s more, as your child gets older, the tray table can be attached to the legs of the highchair and the seat lowered to provide a play table.

If we’re nit-picking, it isn’t the most stylish of high chairs on this list (although there are five prints to choose from), and all its bells and whistles make it pretty chunky and heavy. It isn’t cheap, either. Nevertheless, these are minor issues; this is an all-round fantastic high chair, and you really will get your money’s worth for years to come.

Anyone who loves the clean, Scandi aesthetic of Stokke’s beautifully made pieces will love the Clikk – a basic but stylish high chair that’s as practical as it is good-looking. The beechwood legs are complemented by a moulded, easy-to-clean bucket seat and brilliantly sized tray that comes in a wide range of pastel colours. Ours was the Clover Green option, but the selection of hues will likely work in most kitchens and dining rooms. The chair takes mere minutes to put together, with zero tools required.

Cleaning is a doddle, too, thanks to the detachable wipe-clean and – here come the magic words – dishwasher-safe tray. Perhaps the only difficult thing to keep stain-free is the harness, but this is a common issue on so many high chairs. The chair and footrest offered our mini-tester a super-snug and comfortable fit, and will keep them brilliantly upright from as young as six months. Unfortunately, you can’t adjust the height on this chair – thankfully, it was spot on size-wise for our tester – so you might want to check it against the height of your own dining table before purchasing.

If you love the look of Vital Baby’s iconic Nourish Scoop high chair, you’ll love this updated version that comes with a 360° swivelling seat. The ultra-functional Nourish Scoop is loved for being lightweight and compact, and this space-saving upgrade is no different. With an ergonomically curved and cushioned seat to keep baby upright and comfortable, a built-in footrest and an adjustable and detachable tray, the whole high chair is made from glossy, wipe-clean materials that protect it well from inevitable food stains (hello, tomato sauce). The neutral design means it will blend in well with most kitchen or dining room decor – our tester especially loved the wooden legs.

We also loved how easy it was to fold and store away. It’s on the smaller side, however, so while it can hold babies up to 15kg, it might be a better option for dinkier tots.

Silver Cross’s Buffet high chair might be a touch on the pricey side, but since it will see your little one through from a newborn to a toddler, it’s actually rather good value.

The design is wonderfully practical: it has a three-position reclinable seat, seven different adjustable height options, and a detachable tray with a dishwasher-safe divider. Plus, the removable, wipe-clean seat cover can be washed after particularly messy mealtimes. The newborn cradle mode eases back into a lie-flat recline position for when baby is sleeping at mealtimes, and can be placed upright with the tray from six months.

We tried out the Cool Grey colourway (it’s also available in Candy Pink), which looks super smart and doesn’t show up marks, plus it made a nice addition to our tester’s kitchen. While the chair is slightly on the larger side compared to some on this list, it does fold away neatly for easy storage.

A design classic in white moulded plastic, IKEA’s Antilop is probably the most-seen high chair in dining rooms and restaurants across Europe. Why? It’s cheap, functional, comfortable, and easy to clean. It’s also easy to assemble: the chair comes in one piece and the legs pop into the bottom; you then clip on the tray, if required.

It’s spacious enough to be comfortable for your child while also being secure, and you can easily get your child in and out without too much hassle. One of the drawbacks is that the detachable tray is slightly narrower than that featured on some of the models in our list, which means it will catch a little less dropped food. Overall, though, this is a great-value high chair, and a fantastic option for families on a budget.

8. Infantino Fox Grow with Me 4-in-1: Best high chair for toddler appeal

This fun-loving design from Infantino is a brilliant value-for-money high chair that converts into a booster and toddler seat. Naturally, thanks to its engaging and colourful design, it proved a hit with our one-year-old tester, but it’s great for parents, too.

It’s straightforward to assemble without the need for tools, and easily transforms into a booster or pre-schooler chair by unclipping or clipping-in the extendable legs and removing the detachable try. There’s a recline option, too, which means it can be used by babies from as young as three months, when they start to show an interest in wanting to sit upright and join you at the table, but can’t quite support themselves.

Our tester loved the good-sized tray and sectioned silicone food mat, which not only allows for baby-led weaning but for sensory activities with dried pasta, water, bubbles and more. It was very easy to clean, with no difficult corners for banana porridge or squashed Weetabix to hide in.

Our only gripe? This perhaps isn’t the easiest chair to store when it isn’t in use. The wheels on the bottom of the legs are great for moving it around the house, but aren’t ideal for storage. The legs also flare out quite a bit, so you’d likely need to unclip all the parts and store them separately if you’re tight on space.

However, we’re particularly keen on the compact Pocket Snack booster seat from Chicco because it’s height-adjustable – in fact, it has four height positions – and its tray can be placed in three positions, or it can be removed completely. It also comes with a three-point-harness for extra security.

The Pocket Snack has been designed to fit most dining chairs, and when you’re not using this travel high chair, it’s easy to fold away. It’s light enough to carry as a booster seat when needed, too.

One of the more expensive high chairs on our list, the Cosatto’s 3Sixti2 features all the bells and whistles other high chairs can only dream of.

The first is the six-position swivelling seat, which makes light work out of getting baby in and out. In addition, the strong and weighty base offers huge appeal to those with active little ones – although some might find that it leaves a footprint on the carpet, and it doesn’t make this high chair particularly portable. Nevertheless, the chair scores points for being relatively easy to build – some slotting, sliding and a few screws later, and the multi-height chair was ready to use. Our tester loved how easy it is to clean, too. The soft, padded PVC-lined chair not only offers a bouncy cushioned seat, but it’s removable and wipeable, and has an adjustable back rest for maximum comfort.

The 3Sixti2 is available in a range of colourful and engaging prints that might not appeal to all tastes, but will be loved by babies and toddlers. The two-part tray is a great addition, and can be removed for when your little one wants to join you at the table.

Traveling with your toddler is full of challenges. Often babies and children don’t want to do what we want to do, like going to restaurants and sitting nicely in the high seats provided. Sometimes we take one look at the high chair and don’t want to put our babies in there. Eating out or eating at friends are both part of our lives these days, and if we are caravanners we want our babies and children to be safe in our ‘van.

One way of getting over the problem is having a travel high chair seat that belongs to your toddler. Of course, it is nearly impossible to carry around a full size high chair but there are travel high chairs and travel booster high chairs that make your life a whole lot easier!

There are many high chair seats available in the UK but it’s difficult to see which will be the best for your child. Also, different travel high chairs are better for different age children. Today we are going to check out some of the best on offer, and we will recommend our favourite for a younger child, from about 6 months upward and one for 1 year upwards.

Caravan Travel High Chairs

This is my favourite chair for children aged from one year. While it claims to prevent little ones slipping sideways, it isn’t something that I would personally rely on – I think for younger kids there are better travel high chairs available.

This travel high chair is great though if your child is confident at sitting up and able to do so for some time. It has some great features:

• Fits any chair
• It is padded on the back, sides and the front bumper bar
• Suitable for babies 6 months to 3 years, or 33lb/15kg
• Packs down to a small bag 25cm x 12cm x 8cm
• Quick to inflate or deflate
• Compatible with aeroplane seats
• Can be used with camping seats – useful if you are a caravanner
• Easy to wipe clean and it dries quickly

You can see that this is going to be a very comfortable seat for your little one. It’s very light, so it’s convenient to take anywhere. You can use it in restaurants – great if they either don’t have high chairs or all the travel high chair seats are taken.

It fits into a bag that’s smaller than an iPad, so it’s small enough to put under the buggy or to hang on the buggy handles. You could put it at the bottom of the baby bag and not notice the weight, and it’s there when you need it.

It’s not very expensive so you could have one at the grandparent’s house for when you visit, it’s quick and easy to inflate so your little one doesn’t have to wait long before their seat is ready. If you have a toddler yelling for their lunch, then you will appreciate that!

This seat is great for aeroplanes. It has a hole which the ‘plane seat belt can fit through to make sure your little one is safe. Again, because it is small and light it is easy to bring onto an aeroplane.

If you want to take your little one caravanning with you, normally you would need to bring a dining chair with you in the ‘van. But with this travel high chair, you can use it with a camping chair.

PLEASE NOTE: This is the only travel high chair UK that I have found that fits into a camping chair.

This is why it is my favourite, because it fits so well into a camping chair. It means spending less time and less money because you don’t have to take a dining chair with you, and you don’t have to buy a specific hard backed chair so your toddler can eat with you. Keep the relaxing camping chairs and enjoy your time as a family!

2. Baby Travel Seats Cover Toddler Highchair Safety

My favourite seat for babies 6 months to 12 months. I like it so much, if there was a new baby in my family this is the seat I would buy. I am a grandma, and I’m not likely to become a grandma again any time soon but this is definitely an excellent baby travel high chair.

Here’s why:

• Portable -it’s mainly fabric so it’s light and folds up small
• Fits over the top of a chair – fast and easy to set up
• One click to secure it to the chair
• Shoulder straps to keep your little one safe
• Machine washable – hurrah!
• Carry bag – it comes with its own co-ordinating bag

One of the main reasons I love this baby travel high chair is because of the one click securing at the back of the chair. Because the back of the seat envelopes the back of the chair it’s possible to pull it on with one hand. It has the one click securing system which again is possible with one hand. Okay, it’s definitely easier with two hands but at least with this, you know that (with practice) you can get it on with one hand, while your baby is being held in the other arm.

The reason I like this for younger kids is it has a five-point harness with the shoulder straps. They can fit closely and with the ‘pouch’ your little one will sit in; they are held firmly in place. Because the construction is fabric it isn’t difficult to squeeze in a cushion for more support or to make your baby more comfortable. We want our little ones to enjoy eating out and being in their travel high chair.

We have all been there when your little one is screaming for food and the cafe or restaurant high chairs are all taken. Everyone is looking at you, and you just want to get your baby fed. “Hangry” babies are very stressful! This way you can get the baby travel high chair on the chair and fixed into place with no problem. Then put little one in and give them something to eat. You are a super mum! (Or super dad!)

Psychologically children want to be part of the group, and this seat really puts them there. You can pull your baby up to the table and they feel like they are in the gang. They will play with the food at the table just like the grown-ups are doing and they will chat away just like you do. Fabulous for families with more than one child.

I really like the designs of this baby travel high chair. The fabrics are contemporary and thank goodness, they are machine washable. I would get three, one in the wash, one drying and one to take with you out and about.

Another great benefit of this chair is the bag for the chair is in the same colour as the travel seat. Many other high chairs have bags in navy or black or grey – how many of those do you have kicking about? If you can see the design of the baby travel high chair on the outside you know what it is immediately. Anything to get us out of the door that bit quicker!

3. Chicco Pocket Snack Booster Seat

This is a really popular seat and it has a tray, which is awesome for babies to use for playing or for eating. It has loads of benefits and it’s easy to see why it is so popular. It isn’t actually listed as a travel high chair but I think it would be good for caravanners.

Here are some features:

• Lightweight at only 2kgs – that’s less than a bag of potatoes
• Attaches to a dining chair with safety straps
• Allows children to be part of things at the mealtimes
• Easy to adjust the height to fit the table
• Adjustable tray, easy to remove
• The seat is available in dark grey, lime and mandarin (orange)

This high chair is very good, it attaches to chairs very safely. Although it is robust it collapses down to a roughly 36cm square, so it’s easy to carry around. While it isn’t as light as some of the other travel high chairs, 2kgs is not a huge amount of weight particularly if you are going to mainly use it in a caravan.

I like that it can be safely put on the floor and your little one can use it for playing. Really good if it’s a rainy day and you are stuck indoors; you can put a few toys on the tray and your little one will play nicely for at least a while.

It has long straps so it can be easily adjusted to fit most sturdy chairs. The sides are rigid so they will keep your little on where they are supposed to be. It has a three-point strap system, which is good. I prefer a five-point system for babies under a year – it’s just how I see it. So, I would only put babies in this chair who are very able to sit up unaided. You could always put cushions down the sides of the chair to support your little one if needed, but they will probably get quite dirty at mealtimes.

Another plus about this chair is the way the height can be changed. This means it will fit a wide variety of tables. If the tray is still attached, obviously this will need to tuck under the table or be removed for your little one to feel included. Removing the tray is something some buyers have found fiddly.

There is a lot to be said about the benefits of this booster seat/high chair, but it would be remiss of me not to mention a couple of things.

First of all, the straps will get dirty and need to be washed as with any seat. But customers have said that it is very fiddly to get back on. When you think you are going to need to wash it pretty regularly, it is something to consider.

There is nothing to signify that this will fit on a camping chair, and I think it would be too heavy for a lightweight chair like that. It would have to be a dining chair or similar. That said, I love that the seat is available in a choice of colours.

This booster seat is very popular with parents following a baby-led weaning programme.

This is a great little portable travel high chair, and I like that it has five points and so it is super-safe for your babies. It does claim to make feeding times effortless – not sure that I can agree with that – but it does make things easier when you are out and about.

Like the Cosy Cover chair, this one is fabric so it’s washable. It fits over many different types of chair, making it great for when you are out and about. This one comes in seven different colours so you can have one to fit your tastes – or your little one’s tastes. Again, if it were me, I would have three, one in the wash, one drying and one in your handbag. They are very reasonably priced!

The bag the seat fits is very small, 16cm at its largest point, which is slightly bigger than a school ruler. Or about 6inches, if inches work better for you.

Many people have bought this for going camping and found it invaluable.

5. Booster Seat for Indoor/Outdoor Use  

This seat is very good, it’s a bit like the Chicco seat mentioned above. It has a tray which is BPA free, and clips easily on and off. The tray is adjustable, and the seat comes in lime green or pink.

• Straps are padded between the legs to prevent any chafing
• Received the “Best Baby and Toddler Gold Award” 2018 by Mum

Lots of people really love this chair, it is under two kg and measures around 38cm square. It collapses up like an umbrella and fits neatly into its carry bag.

I have to say that some people have found the fabric frays, which is a shame. It’s by no means something that everyone talks about so it might just be one or two faulty chairs, but it is worth considering.

It has a pocket at the back which is very convenient for baby wipes or small toys for your little one.

6. Lightweight Portable Seat 5 Point Harness for 1-3 Year Olds

I do like this Polar Gear travel high chair/booster seat. I like the fact it will give your little one a few more centimetres height enabling them to sit with you up to the table.

It also features:

• Lightweight – just 590g
• It has adjustable straps
• Suitable for when a child can sit unaided
• Folds up to 30 x 28 x 11cms

This is a good seat for your little one and if you prefer not to have a tray, it could be ideal for you. The colour and design are pleasant and contemporary. There isn’t any choice of colour, which is a shame.

Polar Gear only recommends this seat for children aged 12 months plus. Although children younger can sit up unaided, it seems a shame that it somehow isn’t suitable for younger children. It is said to be useful for children up to 4 years old though, so that is good.

Obviously, it’s up to you to choose which travel high chair you put your little one in and we would, of course, recommend you read reviews and see which is most appropriate to your circumstances.

We like the first two chairs, as they really meet the needs of campers and caravanners. We hope we have given you something to think about and helped you decide on the best travel high chair for you.

How do I get a tray?

Really good high chair. We have taken it travelling a number of times and the little lad is happy as. Compact and light weight. The only thing to be aware of is that the seat depth isn’t ideal relative to table height meaning they are eating with the table at high chest height (probably different for your future basketball players). We ended up putting a folded towel in the seat to prop him up. The only change I would make would be to make this seat height adjustable. Nice product all in all Phil and Teds.

What a brilliant product. Love it! Feels safe and secure for the little ones to sit in right up at the dining table. Awesome addition with the travel bag that it comes in. Would highly recommend this for grandparents who don’t want to have a bulky high chair in their home.

I just came here to purchase another cloth insert for our lobster chair. Not because ours was faulty or defective but because it’s been used SO much. We purchased 6 years ago for our first and she used it every day for 3 years. We had our second 15 months ago and he’s been using everyday for 9 month. I’d say ~4yrs of everyday use is definitely worth the price for this chair!!! We’ve never owned a traditional high chair. This chair attaches beautifully to our quartz countertop and cleaning up under this chair is a breeze. No high chair legs or feet to keep clean. No bulky chair to figure out where to put when not in use. We also travel to restaurants and grandparents with it and it works great there too. Also, when it gets nasty we just take it outside and hose it down and air dry. Buy it...you won’t regret it!!!

I am gutted I didn’t have one of these with my first two babies! They are amazing! We take it everywhere. So much easier than using (often sticky) restaurant highchairs. It’s great for traveling as it’s so light and can fit into the suitcase. Also ideal for around the house as it doesn’t get in the way like a big high chair. Our two year old is just about pushing the weight limit now but it really does feel very secure and safe. I love it!!

How to choose a baby high chair

Ultimately, it is up to you when it comes to choosing a high chair, but it is good to consider what you might like. There are so many different styles and types and you need to narrow down what is important for you and your family. For instance, if you want a high chair that fits your decor, there are some great, stylish high chairs on the market. Alternatively, perhaps you are interested in a high chair which grows with your child, because many can become seats as your little one matures. If you want your little one to join you at the table but also at the breakfast bar and perhaps the work top too, then height adjustability is important.

How to safely use a high chair

Another factor that will be on top of your checklist will be the safety functions. Some highchairs will have harnesses to ensure your little one is secure, but if they don't, it's worth checking the safety features to prevent accidents, or look at the suggested guidelines from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents . When choosing a pushchair, lots of designs will have additional benefits, from adjustable seats to the ability to convert the high chair into a chair for when your baby outgrows it. There are a few things parents should look out for when purchasing a highchair.

• Look out for the British Standard EN 14988:2006 safety standard mark.

• We all know how much babies and toddlers can wriggle. That's why it's important to choose a highchair with a 5-point safety harness, to keep them safe and secure.

•Check if the high chair has a crotch bar or strap to prevent baby sliding out.

•An adjustable or removable tray is a great safety feature because it means you can easily get baby out of the high chair if you need to.

When you are using a highchair don't put it too close to a table leg, or wall, where your little one might be able to push against it and tip the high chair backwards. Also, always make sure you have strapped your baby securely into their high chair and that you never leave them in it unattended.

The Hauck Sit N Relax 3 in 1 Highchair was awarded Silver for Best Highchair  at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024.

What an impressive highchair the Sit N Relax 3 in 1 Highchair combo is! It comes with a height-adjustable frame on which you can fix either the newborn attachment or the seat unit for older children. And what's more, we liked the newborn attachment with a toy bar that can also be fixed on the included bouncer frame.

Unfortunately, this isn't the easiest high chair to clean because of the fabric, but our tester thought the quality and build of the highchair was brilliant. It has the added bonus of being foldable and converts to a rocker. It is easy to assemble and is a great, safe space for children at meal times.

Our mum tester said: "As this is a 3 in 1 product the ease of transition as your baby grows is great. Both the highchair and rocker are great quality in terms of comfort as the materials used are lovely and soft. The build was straightforward once you know what you're doing. The tray table for the high chair is a great size for all plate/bowl sizes plus plenty of space for a cup too. It was easy to get the tray on and off too."

The Puggle Munch Crunch is a 3-in-1 highchair is suitable from 6 months to 15kg, which means it has a long lifespan, and grows from a baby to a toddler. Changing from a highchair to a booster, and then a low chair, it's unlikely you'll need another chair for your child. Our testers liked that the Munch Crunch is lightweight and super easy to assemble, for that added convenience for feeding and has a cushioned removable easy clean seat pad, perfect for those messy meals. However, it isn't foldable which can make it difficult for storage, or travelling.

Our mum tester said: "I would recommend this to a fellow parent because it is a good quality product. It is well made and easy to use. When it arrived it only took a few minutes to set up, the seat is smooth and comfortable for my baby, and the straps are very secure so felt she was safe. The colour and design is lovely too and fits in well with my kitchen."

The Maxi-Cosi Minla has five recline, four tray, and nine height positions, more than many will need! It can be used as a highchair or a booster seat with a tray, which our reviewer loved, saying, 'I love the fact that the chair grows with baby'. She also liked how the seat can be used as a travel seat which connects to a dining chair. It is easy to clean, but the grey fabric does show marks quite easily. Maxi-Cosi can ensure a hassle-free clean up as Minla benefits from washable covers and a compact fold, although with its premium fabrics and stylish look, you won't want to put it away.

Our reviewer Jen says: "The product is very easy to clean. The cushion is wipe-clean without it being plastic feel (baby doesn't stick to it when sweaty), and it's great that you get a spare cushion so you can wash it. I also love the fact that the chair grows with baby, so you don't need to buy several different products. With the different settings, a small baby can use the chair (ie adults can have a hands-free dinner whilst baby lies in the chair), and an older child can also use the chair as a 'booster seat'. The Stokke Nomi High Chair is suitable for newborns with the special attachment, although this must be purchased separately, which allows your baby to be at height level with the dinner table. It can easily be converted to a sturdy high chair with the baby attachment and we loved that it also functions as a  chair for toddlers  and older children.

The Stokke high chair is very stylish and will look great in most living spaces. But it is also really practical and is easy to use, especially when trying to get your little one in and out of the seat. Plus it is lightweight so easy to move from room to room.

Our parent tester said: "I feel that it hits all the pain-points that all parents are familiar with when it comes to meal times and high chairs, such as style, practicality and ease of use. It's usually a struggle trying to wrestle a strong-willed and wiggly toddler into a high chair, then having to strap them in, but with the Stokke Nomi that really isn't a problem as babies over six-months and toddlers can just slide into the seat easily"

However, some testers thought it was a little basic, but it's possible to buy lots of accessories to add to it, such as a padded cushion, a toy basket or even rocking feet, to turn it into a rocking chair which are great for younger children. Our reviewer Julie says: "I would easily recommend this chair to other people. It's a beautiful design which also comes in grey - a very trendy colour at the moment, therefore, matches a lot of people's interiors, it's very well built, great quality, and super practical. The five-point harness straps make it very safe to use for any age with no fear of the child falling out of it or tilting the chair over. The Stokke Tripp Trapp highchair is a modern design that looks fantastic in a kitchen. It's solid and very sturdy and fits upright against the table – enabling little ones to be an active part of family mealtimes, which our testers liked. The chair has no recline feature, but does adjust according to the height of its user. It's comfortable and compact – great for families with limited space – and is a dream to clean (seriously!).

It is expensive, and accessories (a harness and cushioning, for example) cost extra, but its ingenuity, longevity, quality and convenience make it a worthwhile spend, if you have the cash for the initial outlay. You might have to assemble it yourself, but this is more than a highchair; it's a piece of furniture that'll adapt with your little one as they grow.

With six adjustable height levels, mealtimes have never been so easy. Reviewers said the Beaba Up & Down chair goes higher than other high chairs making it very versatile, although actually adjusting the height can be tricky. However, once your little one is sat in an optimum position, the removable tray is a great addition. This chair also has a removable cushion, but it wasn't a hit with our reviewers as it was difficult to remove for washing.

Our reviewer Katrina says: "I really like the fact the Beaba highchair has the six different levels to adjust the height. Many highchairs I have used previously do have the option to adjust the height, but none go as high as this. It is a great thing to have if you have a breakfast bar or a high table you want to sit at with your baby. It is also a great height if you want to stand and feed your baby. One thing which I did find difficult was adjusting the height, I found you had to push in the buttons either side at the same time and get each side a perfectly equal height as it wouldn't clip in otherwise and be wonky. The most common age that a baby will start needing a highchair is around the six-month-old mark because babies typically begin to sit up on their own and eat solid foods at this stage in their development.

Getting the wiggles out before mealtimes can burn off some of your baby's energy. This way, they're less likely to want to move around once it's mealtime. Let them have some tummy time, get them crawling or jumping around before you sit them in their chair.

What comes after a highchair?

Once your child has outgrown their highchair, the next step is moving them to a  booster seat for the table. It will allow your little one to feel more grown-up sitting around the dinner table and will take up less space than a highchair. Your child should be ready to use a booster seat at home and in restaurants anywhere from 18 to 24 months.

Do babies need a footrest on a high chair?

No, it is not necessary but it can be useful. When a child has a footrest it creates a more stable position for the safest possible eating environment. Your little one should be sitting in a 90-90-90 position which means their ankles, knees and hips are all at 90 degrees.

Is it okay to buy a used high chair?

Yes, it is, just make sure you check it over to ensure it is safe. Some things to check include looking at the material and seeing if it is clean and not torn, and that no padding or foam is coming out, which could cause a choking risk if baby pulled it out and put it in their mouth. Also ensure there is a five point harness that works and that the high chair is sturdy and stands securely on the floor.

If you have put a high chair in the attic and are wondering if you can use it with a new baby, then it is fine to use an old high chair. Again, the same safety check apply. The safety standard, BS 14988-1, was introduced in 2006, so any high chair produced after this date should be safe as long as it has been well looked after. Buying baby equipment quickly adds up so if you can use an old high chair, or buy a second hand high chair, it is a great way to save some money.

At 7.9 pounds, the IKEA Antilop Chair is lighter, smaller, and easier to move around than most high chairs. Yet it’s also sturdy, durable, and comfortable to sit in. The smooth, plastic-and-steel construction is simple and functional, without the grime-collecting fabric or crumb-catching crevices that cause problems in other chairs. Compared with some competitors, the Antilop chair can accommodate slightly bigger children, but it’s not a chair that kids can continue to use as they hit preschool. Assembly is easy, but removing and reconnecting the tray can be a pain. And even though the price is impressively low, you’ll have to buy the chair in person at IKEA or pay extra for shipping.

If you want a high chair that blends in with adult furniture and can serve your kid well from 6 months through the end of childhood and beyond, we recommend the Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair . Compared with our top pick, this 15.5-pound chair is a lot pricier and more complicated—the baseline model requires add-on purchases for use with infants, and it takes some effort to assemble and adjust. (You could also just go with a bundled version .) But this chair is far easier for bigger kids to climb into by themselves. It’s also an unusually attractive piece of furniture, something you may want to keep forever, and, if not, it should be easy to sell secondhand.

The compact, 6-pound Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat buckles to an adult chair, and it’s a versatile spare to keep at the grandparents’ house. It can work as either a high chair with a tray or as a booster pulled up to the table. It isn’t as comfy to sit in or as simple to clean as our top pick (it has buttons and seams that can collect grime or allow spills to reach the adult chair underneath). Compared with other chairs of its type, however, this one is easier to clean and less expensive.

Phil&teds Lobster Clip-On Highchair is small and lightweight (about 4 pounds), so it’s easy to fold up and pack into a suitcase—or even to wedge into a diaper bag when you’re on the go. Yet it’s also sturdy enough that it feels safe for use at a restaurant, regardless of the construction of the table it clips onto.

The research

We consulted various experts , including pediatricians, occupational and physical therapists, and product designers.

We spent several hours researching high chair safety online, using the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission ’s database to see which chairs had been recalled recently and why.

We also surveyed over three-dozen parents from across the country to determine which high chair features were most important, as well as to learn about chairs that people loved and hated.

High chairs are among the few baby-gear items that are pretty much a necessity. Most babies begin eating solid food at around 5 or 6 months , and they start using a high chair at the same time. Some families put the high chair away before a child turns 2, while others continue to use the chair through toddlerhood and sometimes beyond (if it’s a booster or a convertible model). In all cases, a high chair will help keep the child—and the child’s food—in place and contained.

Our research and interviews led us to conclude that a great high chair has several attributes:

Safe and stable: A high chair should not feel wobbly at all. Some chairs have three-point safety harnesses, which buckle just around the legs and at the waist; others have five-point harnesses, which include shoulder straps. The safety harness type doesn’t necessarily make a chair safe or unsafe, said Heather Felton, a pediatrician and injury-prevention expert. She added, however, that “all of the straps that come with a high chair should be used.”

Simple to clean: Ease of cleaning is the thing that causes most people to love or hate a high chair. Tiny diners love smearing hands full of sticky puree everywhere they can reach. And, more often than not, toddlers are notorious for overturning entire bowls of Cheerios and milk. A high chair has the potential to drive a parent crazy if it has too many crevices where crumbs can collect, spaces under the seat where liquids can pool undetected, or a seat cover that can’t be easily thrown in the washing machine after a diaper leak.

Compact and manageable: Those who have limited space will likely appreciate a high chair with a smaller footprint. A chair that’s easy to fold or disassemble for long-term storage may also be a plus, as is a chair that’s easy to pack into the car or even into a suitcase for travel.

Designed to make meals easier and more pleasant: A great chair should also be reasonably simple to use. Due to their design, some chairs are easy to trip over, even if they’re not huge. The seat should be comfortable enough to keep a baby happy through mealtime. And, ideally, the chair should not be a total eyesore.

Also, in a comfy chair, a child will be able to sit with their hips, knees, and ankles at a 90-degree angle. Over the past few years, the occupational therapist who runs Feeding Littles (the popular baby-led-weaning education company) has recommended that everyone buy a high chair with a footrest. But the experts we spoke with were split on the issue. Carrie Pagliano, PT, told us kids move so much that they’re unlikely to use a footrest. Occupational therapist Julie Barnes said that when kids have their feet resting flat on a solid surface, this “provides the best postural support, which is the basis for stability of the neck and jaw during eating.”

In short, you can buy a high chair without a footrest, and everyone will get by just fine. But a footrest may help your child to use their energy for eating (a novel motor action for infants), rather than for maintaining their posture. (Many parents wrap an exercise band around our top pick , as a hack to give kids a place to rest their feet.)

We carefully considered about 30 popular models during our first round of testing, 12 during our second round (in 2023), and four more in 2024. We eliminated the chairs with many negative customer reviews that specifically described how difficult they were to clean. This process left us with a lineup of 13 high chairs to test the first time around, eight in 2023, and three in 2024.

Jenni and Erica tested the high chairs with their infants and toddlers. They timed the assembly of each of the 24 high chairs, noting any particular difficulties or frustrations. They measured each chair’s footprint, and they considered how easy a chair was to fold, roll, or lift out of the way between meals.

Then they used each chair with their children (who, over the years of testing, ranged in age from 7 months to 4 years old). Jenni and Erica focused on how difficult it was to get their kids in and out of the chairs, and they noted any cleaning challenges.

The IKEA Antilop has a smooth, rounded plastic seat and tray. It’s easier to clean, simpler to use, and less expensive than every other high chair we tested.

Although this model is lightweight, it’s also sturdy, and its neutral, white-and-silver design and clean lines look presentable in just about any decor. This high chair stacks easily with the tray removed (great for parents with twins or closely spaced kids, or for use at day care), and it’s simple to take apart for storage or travel. Although the Antilop chair has none of the extra features that many high chair designers consider to be standard—such as different height settings or a reclining seat back—we still preferred it over nearly every other chair.

IKEA Baby Footrest

If you’re concerned about ergonomics, you might want to get this add-on footrest. It’s tough to install yet sturdy once in place, and it’s height-adjustable.

It’s the easiest to clean. The Antilop high chair is just one piece of plastic, with no hard-to-reach areas where liquids can pool, and there are no crannies, cracks, or seams where grime can hide. There’s also no fabric (unless you spring for the optional support pillow, which has an also-optional stain-resistant cover ). This chair’s tray fits in the dishwasher, and the safety straps are relatively easy to remove and toss in the washing machine. We love that you can bring the entire chair outside and spray it down with a hose.

The attached tray is easy to use, but it is designed to stay in place most of the time. We’ve found that this makes starting mealtimes simpler and easier, and it reduces clutter around the kitchen and dining room. And the tray’s 1-centimeter raised edge prevents many (but definitely not all) spills from ending up on the floor. When you do need to remove the tray, though, it can be a pain.

The 7.9-pound chair is lightweight, sturdy, and simple. And when the tray is removed, the high chair is easily stackable. It is very easy to assemble—we clocked two minutes. All you have to do is slide the chair’s legs into place and click on the tray. The Antilop chair has a smaller-than-most, 22-by-24-inch footprint and a three-point safety harness, so there are no shoulder straps to get messy. (We’ve found that the three-point harness is tight enough across a kid’s hips to keep them from being able to climb out, despite the lack of shoulder straps.) This chair doesn’t have wheels, but it doesn’t need them because it’s light enough to easily pick up and move around. (Many of the other chairs we tested weighed 25 pounds or more—we could easily see why the designers added wheels.)

The Antilop chair has a plain but attractive look. Though the chair is about as basic as can be, you can modify it in two important ways. First, the optional support pillow gives babies who are first learning to eat solids a little boost up to the tray (though the cushion quickly becomes unnecessary for many). Second, the high chair can also work without the tray, if you prefer to push it close to the table so your baby or toddler can eat there with the rest of the family; note, however, that the tray is not as easy to take off and put back on as using our upgrade pick , the Stokke Tripp Trapp . (To make cleanup even simpler, you can add a silicone placemat from Etsy that fits perfectly inside the tray. Or consider adding handmade, wipeable cushion covers in cute fabrics .)

Jenni has been using the Antilop since her son was born, four years ago. It’s a bit scratched up, but it remains entirely functional. She has taken it on road trips, moved it into four rental homes, and is now using it with her second child. For the price, this chair’s durability is something to behold.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The most common complaints about the Antilop chair tend to be about the tray. When parents remove the tray for the first time, many will be left wondering whether it’s actually intended to come off. This is a common question posted to online forums, and there are YouTube videos showing how to do it: Using one hand, you push down on the center of the seat, and then you yank the outer edge of the tray upward, with force (this is harder than you might think).

Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy enough to remove the tray and then snap it back in after washing it by hand or running it through the dishwasher. (It also loosens up over time.) It is dangerous, however, to try and remove the tray when a baby is in the chair, and IKEA warns against this behavior, with stickers on the tray itself. Jenni removes the tray to wash it every evening (and has done so for the past four years).

The tray does not adjust to move closer to or farther from the baby’s tummy, so more food may fall onto the seat than if you were using a chair with an adjustable tray. (IKEA’s optional back cushion helps with this problem, and it can bring smaller babies closer to the tray and allow them to sit up straight.) The seat puts no padding under a baby’s bottom, but it was comfortable enough for our littlest testers. This model also does not include a footrest, but you can add an aftermarket footrest or strap an exercise band across the legs , to give your child some extra support.

Parents of older babies and toddlers will also find that the Antilop chair requires some cooperation, especially with a heavier toddler (you’ll have to lift them way up and slide them in, similar to using a typical wooden high chair in a restaurant). IKEA does not provide a specific age or weight limit for its chair, but Jenni used it with her son until he was 4 years old.

It does not fold or adjust in any way. This high chair stands at a fixed height that allows you to pull it up to a dining table (the tray sits at the 29-inch mark). However, it’s too low for eating at a breakfast bar or taller counter.

To get this chair for $20, you have to take a trip to IKEA . You can also buy it through IKEA’s website , but shipping fees vary. Many IKEA products (here are some of our favorites ) are now also available through Amazon, but often at an absurdly inflated price. The chair has no warranty.

The solid-beech Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair is the only high chair we tested that’s truly comfortable and easy to use—both for infants and for preschoolers who are ready to climb into a chair by themselves.

It’s also the only high chair we tested that has been part of an exhibition at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art , thanks to its iconic 1972 design, by Norwegian designer Peter Opsvik. The aesthetics are clearly a draw, and they’re inseparable from this chair’s value. Unlike the IKEA Antilop and the vast majority of other high chairs, the Tripp Trapp is a piece of furniture you might keep forever: With its five configurations, it can grow from a first high chair for a 6-month-old to a toddler seat to a chair appropriate for most teens and even adults.

Among all of the high chairs we tested, the Tripp Trapp works for the widest range of ages. It was extremely comfortable for Erica’s 7-month-old, and it was even better for her preschooler, who could climb into it herself. The safety gliders (which attach to the legs) allow bigger kids to push away from the table without tipping and to get down on their own. Overall, this high chair seemed the sturdiest of the two-dozen models we tested, and it’s even designed to hold teenagers or adults up to 242 pounds.

It’s reasonably easy to clean. The simple-to-secure Baby Set attachment can go right in the dishwasher for cleanup (you can choose to purchase it separately or as a bundle from the get-go, which we recommend if you’re buying this seat for a baby under 2). You need a screwdriver to remove the safety harness, and the screw is tough to reach without taking the chair’s seat out, so it takes some effort to keep that grime-free. However, during our testing, the safety straps and buckle did scrub free of all stickiness and stains.

It can be used at the family table. Opsvik’s intent with the high chair (which he designed for his 2-year-old son) was to bring little ones right up to the table, so they could eat with the rest of the family. “On a Tripp Trapp chair, smaller children sit on a higher seat than the taller ones, and these reduced height differences have improved the interaction between children and grown-ups around the same table,” he wrote in an email. “Mealtimes have become more relaxed, and children find it easier to concentrate on the activities taking place around the table when the physical environment has been adapted to their size and needs.” Erica’s little tester loved being at the table with her parents and her big sister. Without a tray, though, all of the mess ends up on the tabletop, but a placemat can help with that.

In 2023, Jenni tested the new, less-expensive Stokke Steps , a plastic seat that mimics the Tripp Trapp’s design, and she found that her toddler liked its family-table friendliness as well. He loved the chair’s design so much that he declared it his “special seat” and refused to eat on anything else.

It has great resale value. The resale potential for used Tripp Trapp chairs is strong, and that may help justify the investment. For example, in New York City, they often sell on Craigslist for more than $150 .

It comes in 10 colors (brights and neutrals). It also comes in lighter “natural” and darker “walnut” wood finishes (all of the chairs are made of beech).

When you register this chair, it has a seven-year warranty .

The add-ons are expensive. This chair can be purchased as a preschooler, kid, or adult chair for $240. But if you’re looking for a high chair for a baby, you’ll want the version including the high chair set , which consists of a plastic seat and back that attach to the chair’s wooden slats.

Parents who want their baby to eat apart from the table can buy an optional Stokke plastic tray ; it’s lightweight, dishwasher-safe, and easy to attach to the Baby Set. There are also optional fabric cushions for the chair’s seat. (You can purchase this set as a bundle with the chair and the high chair set.)

Stokke also has a newborn seat attachment , which you can buy for an additional $150. The Stokke newborn seat, which we haven’t tested, can be used from birth up to a maximum weight of 19.8 pounds (most kids will probably want to sit up well before then).

At about 15 pounds, the Tripp Trapp is heavier to move around than its plastic-and-steel or plastic-and-wood counterparts. It also has a longer assembly time (36 minutes) than many other chairs we tested, but we found it was easier to put together and adjust than similar all-wood competitors.

The Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat , which buckles to an adult chair, is smaller, lighter (4.7 pounds), and easier to travel with than our top pick . So it’s a great second chair to keep at the grandparents’ house. This inexpensive model cleverly folds into a compact little package with its own carry strap, and it can work either as a high chair with a tray or as a booster seat pulled up to the table. But it’s not as comfortable to sit in or as easy to clean as our top pick , which we prefer for everyday use.

It’s relatively easy to clean. We studied the half-dozen readily available chairs of this type, and we concluded that the Healthy Care Deluxe Booster Seat would be the easiest to clean (many similar chairs have large, often ruffle-lined fabric components). The tray insert goes right in the dishwasher—though we did find that it stains easily—and the seat itself is small enough to clean in the sink.

The design is simple but versatile. It took us two minutes to put this chair together. It can adjust to three heights; this is helpful when you’re using it as a booster seat, since some kids need a higher boost to reach the table than others. The tray also has three positions. We tested the Deluxe booster, which includes a snap-on lid, so the tray stays clean when stored away. But the booster is also available without the tray cover (for $5 less).

It’s a convenient spare seat. This chair can work with or without the tray, either as a booster seat pulled right up to the table or as a space-saver high chair. That flexibility makes this chair appropriate for 6-month-olds, toddlers, and preschoolers. Erica’s preschooler liked to have it pulled right up to the table during a visit to Grandpa’s house. And longtime Wirecutter editor Courtney Schley has taken it on trips, to the homes of friends, and to restaurants, in addition to using it in her own home . After their children outgrow this chair, many parents will keep it in a closet to bring out when a baby visits.

And though this seat won’t win any beauty contests, if the tray isn’t attached, you can push the adult chair right up to the table and hide the booster from sight. As with other chairs designed for use next to a table, with this one, parents need to make sure babies aren’t able to kick or push on anything that might cause them to tip over.

This seat does not come with a warranty.

It’s not as easy to clean as our top pick. This chair makes more of a mess than the IKEA Antilop, primarily because food and liquid tend to fall through the booster seat to the adult chair below. The seat also has some buttons, grooves, and other parts that collect grime.

If you’re looking for a high chair that can be packed in a suitcase or even slipped into a diaper bag, the Phil&teds Lobster Clip-On Highchair is the best choice. It weighs about 4 pounds, is smaller than a MacBook Air, and attaches more easily to more tables than other chairs of this type.

It’s compatible with more tables than other models we tested. The Lobster chair works just like any other clip-on chair: The arms slot onto a table, and then you use a tension rod to screw the clamps into place. This chair stands out because it fits on tables that are between 0.8 and 3.75 inches thick—a broader range than for other, similar seats.

It has a washable cover. The chair comes assembled, but you’ll need an Allen wrench to remove several of the parts, if you want to zip off the fabric cover for cleaning (you slide it over a few panels to fully remove it). The padded shoulder straps can also be removed for cleaning. Though the Phil&teds site recommends hand-washing, a company rep told us machine-washing is also okay. We machine-washed the cloth seat and the straps multiple times without incident.

Unlike other clip-on chairs we tried, this one has a slide-on, dishwasher-safe tray. This is a good idea in theory (less mess!), but it’s less useful in practice at a restaurant. Jenni’s daughter kept pushing the tray away from her, and it didn’t stay solidly attached to the chair.

Phil&teds products have a one-year warranty.

The Lobster is a bit more shallow than other clip-on chairs. At 10 months old, Jenni’s daughter was chunky, and her stomach was almost pressed against the table. Although the company says the Lobster chair can fit kids up to 37 pounds, we doubt that a bigger child would fit into the smaller frame.

We don’t recommend it for everyday use. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns against everyday use of chairs that clip to a tabletop, since this type of chair involves so many variables: The table must be stable and heavy enough to hold the weight of the baby and the chair; the caregiver needs to lock it on properly; and the baby may be able to kick and push, if they can reach the table with their legs. Be sure to test the table’s stability before you clip your baby on.

If you want the ergonomics of the Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair at a lower price point: The Mockingbird High Chair is a great option to consider. It’s made with hardwood and sturdy plastic. And, like the Tripp Trapp, it’s highly adjustable: The chair’s footrest can be adjusted to four different baby footrest heights, its seat has three widths, and the chair can also be converted into a toddler chair (which is ideal for a growing kiddo). Note, however, that the toddler footrest is not adjustable. This chair can hold 150 pounds, and it comes with the additions that the Stokke Tripp Trapp doesn’t, so it’s less expensive overall. The Mockingbird chair is also the narrowest of any model we tested, by nearly 2 inches. This chair was easy to clean, but it was tough to build, so you’ll want to follow the company’s emailed instructions closely.

If you like the Stokke brand, but you want a slightly less expensive option: The Stokke Steps chair is worth considering. This chair is similar to the Tripp Trapp chair, but it’s made with plastic, which is (arguably) easier to clean. Like the Tripp Trapp chair, the Steps chair requires multiple add-ons for use with an infant or a baby. But it has a long life and holds up to 187 pounds, and the resale value for any Stokke product is quite good.

If you’re looking for a more stylish and versatile chair: You might like Lalo’s The Chair , which, with added attachments, converts to a booster seat as well as a play chair . This chair’s plastic material is easy to clean (though we didn’t like having to wash the optional-use cloth cover), and its bucket shape kept Jenni’s daughter upright. It’s also lightweight, and it has a reversible footrest and removable tray. But the ribbon-like harness straps are tough to clean, the footrest is adjustable to only two positions, and the tray is difficult to remove. The company also makes an attractive and useful set of dishes .

If you want a clip-on chair, and you don’t mind a slightly larger size: The Inglesina Fast Table Chair is more padded than either the Lobster chair or the Chicco Caddy , and it accommodates slightly larger children. The machine-washable cover unzips, and it’s easier to remove than the covers of its competitors. But this chair is a bit bigger and heavier than the Lobster chair. So the Inglesina chair is tough to pack in a suitcase, and it has a ramp-like effect that pushed Jenni’s daughter toward the table. Its clamp system is just as secure as the Lobster’s, though.

With several ergonomic seating configurations and the ability to hold up to 220 pounds, the Bugaboo Giraffe offers a similar set-up to that of the Stokke Tripp Trapp , Lalo’s The Chair , and the Mockingbird High Chair . It has an easily adjustable footrest and seat, both of which slide up and down with the push of two buttons. It also has an easy-to-remove tray—though reviewers have noted that the white tray stains easily. As with the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Stokke Steps chairs, with the Giraffe chair you can add an infant attachment (for $110), to bring your 0-to-6-month-old baby close to you while your family sits at the table. And for another $110, you can get the rocker frame , to use the high chair’s infant attachment as a rocker on the floor. We haven’t yet tested these additions, but we plan to this year.

The Chicco Caddy Portable Hook-On Chair uses the same clamp system as the Lobster chair , but the Chicco material is tougher to clean. (It buttons on, rather than unzipping; Jenni has used this chair for years, and she finds herself just leaving it dirty, versus taking the time to clean it, because disassembling it is annoying.) The Caddy’s clamp system is also harder to use than the Lobster chair’s, and the Caddy chair sometimes felt wobbly because it wasn’t clamped tightly enough. The Caddy is also bigger than the Lobster, and it won’t fit well in a suitcase, although it’s just fine for a road trip.

The Ergobaby Evolve is a high-quality chair made with thick pieces of wood, small pieces of plastic, and no metal. We liked the decently sized tray, which was easy to remove. It has a similar construction and look to both the Stokke Tripp Trapp and the Mockingbird chairs. And, like those chairs, the Evolve chair turns into a toddler seat. (It can also turn into a kitchen step stool, for an extra $50, if you bundle it with the high chair, or about $80 if purchased separately .) But turning the Evolve into a toddler chair requires quite a bit of deconstruction, and it holds only 100 pounds, less than the comparable chairs we recommend hold.

The Evenflo Eat & Grow 4-in-1 Convertible High Chair has a huge footprint, and it’s covered in fabric that’s machine-washable but a pain to remove. The tray is washable but tough to unsnap. And the materials feel cheap. This model converts to a toddler chair and a kid chair (as well as a table!), but we still prefer the IKEA Antilop .

The Graco EveryStep Slim 6-in-1 Highchair looks like a throne. But why, oh, why is it made with white pleather? We like that it’s adaptable, with possible configurations for infants, toddlers, and beyond. The tray comes off and is easy to throw into the dishwasher. And it rolls nicely (which is important, since it’s big and heavy). But the materials are hard to clean, and this chair is really huge. (We previously tested the Graco Blossom 4-in-1 Seating system , which was also tough to clean.)

The Graco DuoDiner LX Highchair is a modular chair that doesn’t try to turn into a youth seat at all; it works only as a regular high chair, a space-saver chair buckled to an adult chair, or a booster. That means there’s no hidden seat at the bottom to collect sticky liquid. On the other hand, the chair’s seat itself is much heavier and even more like a car seat than those of the other modular chairs. So this one is more difficult to take off and bring to the sink.

The Ingenuity Trio 3-in-1 High Chair was the least expensive modular chair Erica tested. But it also felt a little cheaper: The tray was tough to lock in, and the wheels had it sliding around the floor, even when they were locked. With misplaced footrests, it also didn’t transition well into a toddler chair. That said, it was the easiest modular chair to clean.

The best thing about the Joovy Nook is that its tray opens and swings out to one side, so the caregiver doesn’t need to take it off and then put it back on when seating a baby in the chair. The Nook also folds flat with one hand and leans nicely against the wall. The worst thing about the Nook is that removing the seat cushion for deep cleaning is extremely difficult.

The all-wood Keekaroo Height Right High Chair ’s system for adjusting the seat and footrest is similar to that for the Stokke Tripp Trapp. So this model can be used throughout childhood and as an adult chair. It will likely work just fine for kids ages 3 and up, but it doesn’t seem ideal for the youngest eaters. The wooden tray was very heavy and clunky to slide in and out. And the combination of the seat height, tray placement, and three-point harness allowed Erica’s 7-month-old to lunge forward in the chair (the Stokke chair and the other wooden chair we tested, the now-discontinued Svan Signet Complete, both have a five-point harness).

The Phil&teds Poppy High Chair looks like something out of The Jetsons . But underneath its Aerocore seat cover, there are many hidden gaps, crannies, and slots in the plastic seat frame; in our tests they collected spilled juice and were a big pain to clean. The Amazon listing suggests that the Aerocore seat cover can go in the dishwasher, but the instruction manual advises scrubbing with soap and water instead. And indeed it wasn’t a good idea to put the cover in the dishwasher—it warped when we did so.

The Skip Hop Eon 4-in-1 has a deep bucket seat, which affected Jenni’s daughter’s posture. She wasn’t comfortable in the seat, and she tended to fuss and slouch rather than eat. With a silicone material that we could wipe down quickly and a tray cover that easily snapped off for the dishwasher, this seat was not a problem to clean. And it can convert to a shorter seat for a toddler. But it has a large footprint, and the footrest was too low for an infant and too high for a toddler. For a fraction of the price, the IKEA Antilop is a similar but far better option.

Before testing, we ruled out a few other popular chairs, including Peg Perego’s Prima Pappa Diner and Siesta , because their seat covers were not machine-washable.

Falling is the most common high chair accident that lands children in the emergency room—usually because caregivers don’t fasten the safety straps that come with the chair, or they leave them too loose, explained Heather Felton, a pediatrician and injury-prevention expert in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Injuries from high chairs are fairly common in general. About 24 children are treated in the ER every day in the US, or about one per hour,” Felton wrote in an email. “Most falls happen when a child is climbing or standing on the chair. The most common types of injuries are to the head and neck, with closed head injuries, including concussions, being the most common.”

It’s important to follow the specific safety instructions that come with each chair. For example, it’s not safe to try to remove the IKEA Antilop chair’s tray while a baby is in the seat. The Stokke Tripp Trapp Chair’s manual explains that this high chair is not for use on rough surfaces and uneven floors—such as areas with rugs or tiles—because the chair needs to be able to slide backward. With both the Tripp Trapp and any booster, including the Fisher-Price Healthy Care Deluxe , in which a child is buckled to an adult chair, you need to watch for frames underneath the table that a child could push their legs against, causing themself to tilt backward.

When it comes to camping luxuries, there’s little that means as much as a camping chair. Whether it’s to sit outside your tent and watch the world go by, rest weary legs after a day’s hiking or reposition from the campsite to the beach to watch the kids play, you’ll want a comfortable place to sit.

How we tested.

In addition to doing the obvious and sitting on the chairs we also used them round a fire pit and in every reclining position possible. Testing happened at different times of day to assess how breathable fabric was in the heat of the sun and the cool early to mid evening. We carried these chairs varying distances before putting them up, sitting on them for upwards of 90 minutes to assess whether comfort levels changed over time.

It does need trees or a hook in order to hang, but it only needs a single anchor point.

Made with reinforced parachute silk nylon, it’s triple stitched with taped seams and stainless steel rings so it won’t rust either. The backrest is adjustable and rather than settings – like a chair – you can adjust it to whatever angle you want. It might not be the cheapest on the list, but it can fit three people – four children at a push – and can also double as a camp bed if needed. And despite fitting plenty of bums, it weighs in at just 2,100g. Thanks to the advanced high-tech aluminium alloy frame, a higher specification than aircraft-grade aluminium which goes through over 70 production processes, it can take 190kg in weight too. With a five year warranty it comes in sensible black, a funky tie dye purple blue and red colour, rainbow bandana and blue paisley so it really will suit any style.

Quecha folding reclining camping chair

• Weight : 4.65kg

One of the few on the list with a headrest, Quecha’s is easily one of the most comfortable we tested. In fact, we may have even fallen asleep during testing in the sunshine. The Quecha HQ is at the foot of Mont Blanc in The Alps and all of its products are rigorously tested by outdoor enthusiasts before coming to market.

It’s not the lightest on the list weighing in at 4.65kg but this isn’t really designed to be portable – it’s a “set up camp” type of chair. It takes a maximum weight of 110kg but the ventilated fabric on the backrest meant clam-free backs even in the warmer temperatures. The downside is that it doesn’t have a cup holder so there’s nowhere for a cool glass of sauvignon after a day’s camping.

Kelty lowdown couch

• Weight : 9.5kg

Unlike most camping sofas, the Kelty is designed to be lower to the ground, just 32cm off it to be precise. It’s at the perfect height to enjoy and manage a fire pit and stretch out tired legs, and as well as fitting three humans, it also spacious enough for a dog to curl up on, too.

It’s generally heavier than others, weighing in at 9.5kg, but that’s to be expected for a sofa that fits three and boasts a maximum load weight of 272.2kg. Whoever sits in the middle won’t have one of the two adjustable drinks holders – which fits cans, glasses, flasks and bottles – though. It measures in at 163cm x 60cm x 80cm while the packed size is 89cm x 23cm x 34cm. But the carry wrap it comes in also doubles as a padded mat so no design is wasted.

Futon deck chair

One of only two wooden models on the list, this might not seem like a camping chair as we know it. It packs completely flat so can easily sit in a boot or under a camper van seat and despite being made of oak it weighs just 3.5kg.

The name Futon might not be synonymous with camping, but the Adirondack style seating made it ergonomic and incredibly comfortable. It lacks a head rest so it’s not one to fall asleep in and it doesn’t have a drinks holder but the good news is, it’s so low to the ground, you can easily rest a can, glass or bottle on the floor without having to reach for it. This is one of the best looking on the list too, so a pair outside your tent will definitely make a style statement.

Stripes Company stool

• Weight : 1.9kg

A stool might not be everyone’s idea of a relaxing camping seat but long before aluminium became de rigueur for camping seats, wood, especially teak – was a popular choice. The Stripes company has stuck with using grade-A teak for its beautiful stools which means it weighs in at 1.9kg and is suitable for an average sized adult to sit on.

Available in a staggering 57 colours and striped patterns, there’s every possibility you’ll spend longer choosing a stool than sitting on it. The Stripes company also offers deckchairs and directors chairs in the same 57 colours so it’s possible to get matching sets, and use this as a footstool. Helpfully, the fabric seats are removable and washable too.

Outwell ullswater camp chair

• Best : For campfires
• Maximum load : 125kg
• Weight : 5.9kg

With a high back and three adjustable positions, the Ullswater feels and acts like a traditional camping chair. It weighs in at 5.9kg so is towards the heavier end compared to others in our list, but it does have a maximum load of 125kg. The cupholder folds away which is handy and the padded upholstery in the back and neck rest make it a really comfortable chair.

The carry bag is ergonomic which makes it comfortable to carry across a few fields to your final campsite, and folds away fast too. And while it might not win any awards for colour scheme or futuristic design, it’s an exceptionally comfy chair at a reasonable price. The cherry on top is that it comes with a two year manufacturer’s warranty.

Vango titan 2 oversized chair

• Best : For snoozing in
• Maximum load : 180kg
• Weight : 5.96kg

Any camp chair list wouldn’t feel complete without a Vango on it. Synonymous with camping and the great outdoors, the Vango titan oversized camping chair is wide and sturdy, and feels very much like a bucket chair when you’re sitting in it. It’s comfortable enough for nights round the campfire, sitting by the river with a fishing rod or even having a snooze in after a day at the beach.

It weighs in at 5.96kg but can take 180kg which gives it one of the biggest weight loads on the list. The wrap around design makes it one of the better looking chairs on the list too, and the brick dust colour sets it apart from competitors. It did get slightly clammy in direct sunshine though so isn’t as breathable as it could be, but the extra padding is what makes it so comfortable.

Coleman forester bucket chair

• Best : Looking camping chair
• Maximum load : 113kg
• Weight : 3.8kg

The bucket style of this chair makes it one of the better looking on the list. Weighing just 3.8kg and with a maximum load of 113kg, the chair has a steel frame finished in black which just adds to the style and class. During our testing, this one felt warmest in the evening, the wrap bucket style carried heat well. The bottle holder isn’t a conventional one, it’s simply a fabric pocket, so it won’t fare well with a glass or a can. But it does come in its own carry bag which is ergonomic to carry and the high back really lets you feel like you’re sinking into comfort, which is much needed after a day spent outdoors.

Outwell Lake Huron chair

• Best : Inflatable chair
• Weight : 6.6kg

The only inflatable on the list, blow up chairs might not be the first thought when it comes to camping but with more people turning trips under canvas into longer holidays, comfort has become paramount. At 6.6kg it’s the heaviest on the list but this chair is more for those setting up a home-away-from-home than it is for wild camping.

There’s no need to remember a pump as this chair self inflates, and you can choose how firm you want the finished seat to be from plush to firm. The cover is also detachable so can be cleaned easily. It’s definitely not one to put into a backpack for a day’s hike but when it comes to comfort, the Lake Huron is hard to beat.

The verdict: Camping chairs

First place has to go to the Nemo reclining chair , which is perfect to relax, lie back and look at the stars in. It does come with a hefty price tag but it’s durable, brilliantly made and feels like it’ll last decades.

The moon chair from Ticket to the Moon comes in second, as it’s incredibly ergonomic, comfortable, very lightweight and very easy to fall asleep in. Not to mention it’ll likely garner envious glances from anyone who happens to be camping nearby.

Special mention has to go to the Futon . It’s exceptionally comfortable and folds completely flat which means that two could sit in the boot underneath a tent or bags.

Highchairs provide a safe space for a baby or toddler when they’re old enough to eat sitting upright, but too young to sit securely on a full-sized chair. After three months of research and testing, here are the eight best highchairs available to buy.

But there are a host of other extra features that you can look out for too.

Equally useful for six-month-olds trying solid food for the first time and wriggly toddlers needing a place to eat without distractions, highchairs come in a variety of sizes, functionalities and prices. To find the best highchairs, our parent tester put some of the UK's top-rated models thoroughly through their paces with the help of her nine-month-old and two-year-old. Over a period of several months, she tested each highchair rigorously for safety, stability, ease-of-assembly, day-to-day use, aesthetics, how easy to clean and value for money.

We also consulted the Mumsnet forums - the largest online network of UK parents - for advice on which products they recommend and use with their own children, as well as seeking out expert advice from the NHS on what to look for in a highchair. While it may not look like anything special, our Mumsnet users rave about this highchair for being budget-friendly, functional and easy to clean up after mealtimes.

The smooth plastic seat and steel click-in legs are designed for quick assembly – just two minutes! It's lightweight and stable so you can easily take it apart to take away with you, however, at less than the cost of your monthly nappy bill, you can afford to buy one for Grandma too. If you need more than one, they easily stack up so they don't get in the way, and you can also buy the ANTILOP cushion for making it more comfortable for your little one. One of the only downsides is it is not intended to last beyond toddlerhood or 15kg, so it has a limited lifespan.

Chicco Polly: Great for multi-use but bulky

If you are dead keen to have your baby at the table in a high chair, I would look for a secondhand Chicco Polly Magic. I got one on eBay for not much and it was fab. Could recline right back or you can add the toy arch. Was invaluable with a wee one and a toddler for meal times. We passed it onto a friend as the use of it is pretty short lived and then they passed it on also. Once weaning, I got the cheap Ikea one .

I had a Mimzy highchair and it was fab, but it was recommended to me as little one has hip dysplasia and its really wide. It could be a pain to clean but all the padding comes off and goes in the washing machine which I used to do once a week (normally Sunday after dinner and then it would be dry by Monday dinner time after nursery).

Why buy a highchair?

Highchairs are a safe and supportive place for your baby to eat before they’re old and tall enough to sit on an adult-sized dining chair. Most come with a plastic tray so your baby can see and reach their food easily – especially useful when first weaning .

As child nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed says, sitting your child at your eye level and at (or close to) the rest of the family at mealtimes aids their development.

“Babies often learn what and how to eat by watching their parents and siblings eat too”, she says. “It’s more likely that they will happily accept foods that they see you gobbling up yourself.”

For older babies and toddlers, a familiar chair often signals ‘mealtimes’ to them, allowing them to eat free from distraction and out of harm’s way.

How long will I need a highchair for?

Although some of the chairs we tested had extra accessories making them suitable for smaller babies, children should only use a highchair to eat once they’re able to sit unaided.

Charlotte Stirling-Reed advises, “Baby needs to be sitting in an upright position and should easily be able to hold their head and neck steady. Always sit with your baby when offering foods, especially finger foods.”

The life-span of your chair will depend on the type of model you choose, as some are intended to be used throughout childhood and beyond (see section below). You’re likely to find a chair with a tray essential from first weaning up to the age of three.

Then, depending on the size and independence of your child, you may want to switch to a booster seat on an adult chair. Many multifunctional and transitional highchairs adjust in height, so you can bring the chair right up to the table.

How much does a highchair cost?

It varies tremendously with brand and functionality. A budget highchair, including this year’s winner, the IKEA Antilop, will set you back somewhere between £10 to £50. A multifunctional option will usually be in the £50 to £150 price range. A transitional one can be anything between £150 to £300+. A travel chair should really stay under £50 if it’s to be cost-effective.

What to look for in a highchair

The relevant safety directive to look out for is EU directive EN 14988:2017, which specifically sets out standards for children’s highchairs.

We asked Charlotte Stirling-Reed what features bewildered first-time parents might watch out for, here are her top tips:

The height of the seat back (so it will support your child as they sit)

The robustness of the safety harness (is it three-point or five? Does it seem secure when attached?)

How solidly the tray is attached to the chair when in place

How easy it is to clean

Does it have a footrest (to help your child avoid slumping in the chair)

How to choose the best highchair:

Highchairs have come a long way in the last couple of decades as companies have begun to apply intelligent design to baby equipment. There are several broad types on the market, so consider which functions are important to you before making your choice.

1. Budget highchairs

At the inexpensive end of the spectrum are the budget chairs. These tend to be standalone highchairs (intended to be used by themselves using a plastic tray, instead of being pulled up to a table), short on adjustability features and elaborate design – favouring instead a functional simplicity that often, incidentally, means they’re much easier to clean.

Indeed, they can still tick all the essential boxes without the added extras and loads of Mumsnet users will tell you that you don't need to spend much on a highchair to make it worth your while. Our Best for award went to the IKEA Antilop, which was also the cheapest on the list.

2. Multi-functional highchairs

A multifunctional highchair is a step-up in functionality and price. It has been designed to include features that make life easier or that adjust the chair to suit your child.

Multifunctional chairs usually include adjustable seat height options, reclining seat backs, trays that can move between several different positions, extra tray inserts to save on washing up or under-seat toy storage baskets. Single-stem highchairs, which stand on one leg instead of four, even rotate 360 degrees as well as adjust in height.

Multifunctional options might also include newborn accessories so you can use the chair before six months, or have a removable tray so the chair converts from a standalone chair to a table-side one. They usually fold away and often stand when folded for easier storage, and come with luxuriously padded cushions, which are comfortable for your baby to sit on but are crumb magnets for any dropped food.

A multifunctional chair might be a good choice if you want to adjust the chair to fit your baby or sit at your table, if you prefer a more comfortable cushion or if you know you’ll want to fold it away when you’re not using it.

3. Transitional highchairs

These are the big guns of the group – the chairs intended to last as standalone models in babyhood and then convert to table-side models that can be used in toddlerhood, childhood and even beyond.

As a result, they are usually crafted from sturdy, high-end materials, are intentionally designed to look elegant and minimalist, and come with a range of design options so you’ll want to stick with it long-term.

They are also, of course, the most expensive – and be aware that, in this group in particular, you’ll need to pay extra for everything except the chair frame itself (including newborn accessories, baby seats, trays and even safety harnesses), so make sure this is included in your budget.

The good news is that, because these chairs last so well, there’s a thriving second-hand market on eBay and Facebook Marketplace, where you can sell yours on or pick up a used model for a fraction of the cost.

4. Travel highchairs

These ensure that your child always has somewhere safe and age-appropriate to eat when they’re not at home – whether that’s at a grandparent’s house, a friend’s, or away on holiday – although many are designed so well that people use them at home too.

Most travel highchairs either attach to an adult dining chair as a chair-mounted booster or clip onto the table edge (sometimes called a hook-on or clip-on highchair) like a vice. In both cases, you need suitable furniture to make it work – though, anecdotally, the chair-attaching kind fit more universally than the table-attaching kind.

It’s a good idea to read up on their specs before choosing one to make sure you’ll be able to use it safely. It’s helpful when travel chairs collapse to a portable size and many come with their own carry cases or shoulder straps to help with this.

They might also be a good choice if your child spends regular time at a relative’s house but the relative doesn’t have space for a full-time chair, if you know they’ll eat better on holiday in a chair made for them, or if your kitchen is small and you want something that won’t take up any extra floor space.

Which brand high chair is best?

We like the Stokke Tripp Trapp the best out of all the highchairs we researched - and with a second highchair, the Stokke Steps , also in our round-up, we think the title of best overall highchair brand is well-deserved. It looks stylish, you can use it from birth and with almost 50 years of use, it has certainly stood the test of time.

How we chose our recommendations

To help us find the best highchairs, we started by thoroughly researching the products currently on the market. We commissioned Rachel Jeffcoat, a writer and mum of three, to research and review the top highchairs out there. As a parent to an eight-, six- and two-year-old, Rachel has years of experience using a wide variety of baby equipment, from baby toys to stair gates and everything in between. Rachel spent 16 hours researching the current highchair market. For this category, Rachel partnered with Katrĩna, who has a nine-month-old baby and a 33-month-old toddler to juggle at mealtimes, so was able to put all our products through their paces over the course of three months.

There's no incentive for us to be lazy with our research or in our testing process. There's no reason for us to respond to pressure from retailers or brands trying to promote new products. It's actually quite the opposite and we think it's a good system, one that keeps us focused on making parents lives' easier.
