Windows Sockets Error Codes

  • 6 contributors

Most Windows Sockets 2 functions do not return the specific cause of an error when the function returns. For information, see the Handling Winsock Errors topic.

The WSAGetLastError function returns the last error that occurred for the calling thread. When a particular Windows Sockets function indicates an error has occurred, this function should be called immediately to retrieve the extended error code for the failing function call. These error codes and a short text description associated with an error code are defined in the Winerror.h header file. The FormatMessage function can be used to obtain the message string for the returned error.

For information on how to handle error codes when porting socket applications to Winsock, see Error Codes - errno, h_errno and WSAGetLastError .

The following list describes the possible error codes returned by the WSAGetLastError function. Errors are listed in numerical order with the error macro name. Some error codes defined in the Winsock2.h header file are not returned from any function.

Winsock Run-time Error 10054

VB Help gives the description for the run-time error 10054 as ““The connection is reset by the remote side””, but doesn’t give any more details. Can anyone elaborate on this description, and tell me what might cause this error, and how I can prevent it. I am sending a series of short UDP messages among several PCs on a LAN, and somtimes get this error and somtimes do not. I think the error occurs only between certain PCs. I’d appreciate any help! Tom Reidy

I also have a problem similar with this. When my program run using Win98 client I encountered no such error. But when a Win98 client communicates with Windows XP, the error occurs. What I need to do is suppress the error cause it is halting the system, right now I have no recourse but to use Win98 for all client.

Thanks, Vic

For starters, try a continuous ping (if allowed) to the target machine to see if you are getting 100% packet transmission. You might have a bad connection. If only certain machines get this error, maybe they have some sort of personal firewall installed that is preventing or blocking the communication. Also, I can suggest putting your transmission code in a short loop (3 retries) if you encounter this error on a sporadic basis for better success rate.

Also, I found this “official meaning” at www.sockets.com

WSAECONNRESET (10054) Connection reset by peer.

Berkeley description: A connection was forcibly closed by a peer. This normally results from a loss of the connection on the remote socket due to a timeout or a reboot.

WinSock description: Same as Berkeley. On a datastream socket, the connection was reset. This reset could be generated locally by the network system when it detects a connection failure, or it might be received from the remote host (in TCP terms, the remote host sent a RST packet). This error is also possible on a datagram socket; for instance, this error could result if your application sends a UDP datagram to a host, which rejects it by responding with an ICMP Port Unreachable.

User suggestions: Some network systems have commands to report statistics. In this case, it might be possible to check the count of TCP RST packets received, or ICMP Port Unreachable packets. See other suggestions under WSAECONNABORTED.

WinSock functions: recv(), recvfrom(), send(), sendto(), FD_CLOSE

kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 is typically an error (bug) found at runtime. To make sure that the functionality and operations are all working in a usable condition, software developers like Apple Inc. do debugging before software releases. Unfortunately, engineers are human beings and can often make blunders during testing, missing error 10055.

Some users might experience the message "Winsock Error. kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055." while using Safari. In the event of the detected error 10055, customers may convey the presence of problem to Apple Inc. via email or bug reporting. Apple Inc. will then patch these defective code entries and make an update available for the download. So, in these cases, the developer will then release a Safari program update to fix the error message displayed (and other reported problems).

In the majority of cases you'll see kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 during the booting process of Safari. Let's analyze some of the most common causes of error 10055 runtime errors:

Error 10055 Crash - This is a very popular error 10055 runtime error that causes the entire program to shut down. This emerges when Safari fails to respond to input properly, or does not know what output is required in return.

kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 Memory Leak - The consequences of a Safari memory leak involve a malfunctioning operating system. Possible causes include failure of Apple Inc. to de-allocate memory in the program, or when bad code is executing an "infinite loop".

Error 10055 Logic Error - Logic errors manifest when the user inputs the correct data but the device produces the wrong result. This can happen when Apple Inc.'s source code has a vulnerability regarding data handing.

These kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 problems are generally caused by Safari-related file corruption, or in some cases, if the file has been accidentally or maliciously removed. As a first troubleshootiong step, most PC professionals will attempt to replace the applicable version of the Apple Inc. file. We also recommend running a registry scan to clean up any invalid kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 references which could be cause of the error.

Classic KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 Problems

Partial List of kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 Safari Errors:

  • "KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 Program Error."
  • "KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 not valid."
  • "KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 encountered a problem and will close."
  • "Sorry, we can't find kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055."
  • "KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 is missing."
  • "Error starting program: kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055."
  • "Can't run KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055."
  • "KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 quit."
  • "Fault in Software Path: kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055."

These Apple Inc. error messages can appear during program installation, while a kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055-related software program (eg. Safari) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Notating when kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 errors occur is paramount in finding the cause of the Safari problems and reporting them to Apple Inc. for help.

Creators of KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 Difficulties

KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 problems can be attributed to corrupt or missing files, invalid registry entries associated with KCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055, or a virus / malware infection .

More specifically, these kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 errors can be caused by:

  • Corrupted or invalid kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 registry entry.
  • Virus or malware corrupting kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055.
  • Malicious deletion (or mistaken) of kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055 by another application (not Safari).
  • Another software application in conflict with kCFErrorDomainWinSock: 10055.
