Moss Point Mississippi

There’s nothing quite like a family vacation for enjoying the quality time together, away from the hustle of everyday life. As you consider your options for your next family getaway, Mississippi offers everything you need to make the most of time spent together, whether you love outdoor adventures, history, rock ‘n roll or the blues. Find trip planning ideas and family-friendly activities  to prepare for your Mississippi getaway with help from Visit Mississippi.

Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities

From the Appalachian foothills to the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast, outdoor activities abound in the Magnolia State. You’ll find crystal clear lakes, streams, and rivers for kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing, as well as hiking and biking trails to suit visitors of all ages and abilities. Some must-see local, state, and national parks include:

  • LeFleur’s Bluff State Park (Jackson, MS)
  • Arkabutla Lake (Hernando, MS)
  • Percy Quin State Park (McComb, MS)
  • Clark Creek State Park (Woodville, MS)
  • John W. Kyle State Park (Sardis, MS)
  • Natchez Trace (Tupelo, MS and beyond)

Prefer the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico? Mississippi’s Gulf Coast is often called “The Playground of the South,” and for good reason. Relaxing on sandy shores, swimming, kayaking, and deep-sea fishing make for fun-filled days for visitors of all ages. Gulf Islands National Seashore  in Ocean Springs offers easy access to beaches and more, and everyone will love eating their fill of fresh-caught seafood at one of the many local restaurants along the coast.

A Window into History

Mississippi played a pivotal role in the Civil War . The state is home to historical landmarks that introduce the whole family to important moments in our nation’s past. Antebellum tour homes offer a glimpse into the daily life of prior generations, while battlefields allow your family to see the locations where pivotal conflicts took place, shaping our nation’s history. History buffs won’t want to miss Vicksburg National Military Park , where guests can pay their respects at the National Military Cemetery, tour the USS Cairo Museum, and take guided walking and driving tours.

In addition to Civil War history, you’ll find countless museums and other important sites to explore. The state capital of Jackson is home to four can’t-miss museums, all within walking distance. These include:

  • Mississippi Civil Rights Museum
  • Museum of Mississippi History
  • Old Capitol Museum
  • Mississippi Governor’s Mansion

You won’t want to miss the rich artistic history of the state, as well, from the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson to sites and trails dedicated to Delta Blues music , Mississippi literary icons , and the birthplace of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis.

More Ways to Have Fun

Are you ready to try something new? If so, there’s no better place than Mississippi, where exciting new experiences await. You can even plan a visit to one of our NCAA teams’ home campuses to see where the Ole Miss Rebels and the Mississippi State Bulldogs take to the field to compete in the best athletic conference in the nation. From water parks and agritourism to shopping and spas, your Mississippi family vacation will be one to remember for years to come.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers good times for parents and kids alike. Spending the day at the beach is guaranteed fun, but there are also other great experiences like a tour of the Biloxi Lighthouse trip on the Betsy Ann , an authentic riverboat. Be sure to check out Escape , a 55,000-square-foot family entertainment center at the Margaritaville Resort Biloxi. Here, guests and the general public can enjoy a 48-foot volcano rock-climbing wall, ropes course, bowling, an indoor cloud coaster and virtual gaming.

Madison County

Comprised of the cities of Ridgeland, Madison, Canton and Flora, this county just outside the state’s capital offers attractions perfect for a family vacation. Ridgeland’s Renaissance at Colony Park has world-class shopping and dining with a splash pad for the kids, while Madison is full of playgrounds and parks for a day in the sun. Flora is home to the Mississippi Petrified Forest , a six-block nature trail that’s home to ancient trees and 36-million-year-old logs. In winter, Canton becomes “the city of lights” with their annual Christmastime light display in the famous Canton Square.

Gulf Coast Gator Ranch

South Mississippi is home to many beautiful swamplands, and the Gulf Coast Gator Ranch in Moss Point offers a chance to get up-close-and-personal with some of the swamp’s most intriguing creatures. Children as young as four can even take a trip on their Airboat Swamp Tours, with a chance to see wild alligators, explore the Mississippi wilderness and give the kids an experience they’ll never forget.

Alligator

Hattiesburg

The Hattiesburg Zoo and Kamper Park are just two of the great family destinations in the MS Main Street Community of Hattiesburg. Kids Rule Family Fun Center also offers open play time on its obstacle courses, interactive sports games and inflatable jumps and slides. In the fall, enjoy a University of Southern Mississippi football game and take the family tailgating before the game.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia is home to the annual Neshoba County Fair , a festival that’s a hit for families and offers live music, rides, horse races and many other attractions the family will love. Stay at the Pearl River Resort for plenty of pool time and great food for the kids, plus golfing and drinks for the grownups. The not-to-be-missed attraction in Philadelphia, though, is Geyser Falls Water Theme Park , a top-rated water park with rides and thrills for kids and adults of all ages.

Pearlington

Infinity Science Center is the official visitor center for NASA’s nearby Stennis Space Center. A top STEM destination of the southeast, the center offers 35,000 square feet of interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits, artifacts and stimulators that make learning about Earth, space and technology interesting, immersive and fun. Located in Pearlington, Mississippi, the Infinity Science Center is just a short drive from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans.

Inside the Infinity Science Center

Gulfport is a great beach destination with fun attractions suitable for many different types of families. Stop by the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center , an interactive children’s museum in a converted 1916 former school, splash and swim in the Gulf Islands Waterpark or enjoy dinner at Island View Casino . For a truly unique experience, visit the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies , where you can interact with marine animals in touch pools and watch a dolphin display while learning about research conducted by the institute.

Historical Vicksburg has fun things for the entire family to enjoy. The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum gives a glimpse into the beginnings of the popular soda that was first bottled in the city. To catch up with history, the Vicksburg National Military Park offers guided and self-guided tours of the city’s involvement in the Civil War. For a little more laid-back fun, head downtown for a bite to eat before stopping by the Catfish Row Children’s Art Park , a collection of murals, children’s art exhibits and splash fountains set against the backdrop of the Mississippi River.

Mississippi has great importance in the agricultural sector of the USA . But that is not the only reason for the popularity of this state. This state has a rich civil war heritage. The USS Cairo Museum takes you on a trip through the events of the civil war.

Family vacations in this state are on another level. There are many kid-friendly attractions, and the Mississippi Children’s Museum will be the best place if your kid loves art and history. If Mississippi had to be summed up in just a few words, “The State of Museums” would be it. Both the Seafood Industry Museum and the Walter Anderson Museum serve important roles in educating the public about the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Despite this, we feel obligated to let you know that Mississippi is not a particularly interesting place for very young children; rather, it is best enjoyed by school-aged children (about ages six and above) who are able to fully appreciate the state’s many nuances. Still, this is the perfect state for laid-back vacations with the family. The historical sites are definitely worth checking out.

Here, we will discuss the factors and details you must know before leaving for a trip to Mississippi with your kids. So it is best to read this guide to fully understand what to expect in Mississippi.

Mississippi is a perfect place for a family vacation for uncountable reasons. This state has many family-friendly places, and the food is to die for.

History & Museums

Many people who are interested in the past will have a difficult time leaving this state. The history of this state is fascinating and a topic of interest for people of all ages. This trip will teach kids a lot about the history of the entire USA. The Healthworks Children’s Museum is one of the best educational museums in this state.

Nature Geeks Heaven

This state can offer you every activity, whether you enjoy trekking or just lounging on the beach and tanning. As soon as you leave the Gulf Coast resorts, you may access the beach and go trekking. To allow you to experience many forms of living, there is also a location for camping accommodations.

Water Parks & Gaming Center

Water parks are a must for every state in the USA, and Mississippi makes sure to bring forth the best ones you can find. The gaming center at the Mississippi Gulf Coast is also one reason kids will love the trip to this state.

National Parks

Don’t forget about the Catfish Row Children’s Park, which offers a ton of entertainment. Kids in particular often get queasy from studying too much history. So, if you’re experiencing this, it’s time to go on to Natchez National Historical Park or Wall Doxey State Park.

Food & Fun

Countless activities are available to you, regardless of where you want to go—the Mississippi museum, a park, a water park, a village, the mountains, etc. The Big Play Entertainment Center is also located in this historic city. You have the entire day to visit exciting locations and devour mouthwatering breakfast favorites. But we can assure you that you will not have enough time to visit every location.

If you go for a few days, you will only be able to see half of the beauty Mississippi has to offer. But whatever the case, Mississippi is the best for experiencing a perfect family vacation.

Mississippi experiences both extreme summer and winter conditions. And when the temperature is extreme, kids will find it hard to enjoy their trip to Mississippi. However, you get a few continuous months when the weather in Mississippi is the best for kids and families.

So to enjoy these historic riches, you must not visit Mississippi in the months of January, February, November, and December. But this does not mean that Mississippi becomes an old rag during these months. You can visit this state during these months only if you do not have kids and old people with you. It is because they won’t be able to absorb the weather conditions and might fall sick.

To avoid any mishaps, the best time to visit Mississippi is in the months of March, April, May, June, August, September, and October. Did you notice that we missed July? The reason for doing so is that the heat is a little unbearable for kids during this month. Other than that, there is no problem with visiting Mississippi during the month of July.

So if your kids can manage, you can plan your vacation for July. However, we won’t recommend you do so. The other months, which we said were the best because they delivered the best weather conditions. The temperature is moderate, and you and the kids can enjoy the vacation without any trouble.

So it is up to you to decide which month suits you best. Obviously, you need to check your schedule before planning a trip. But if you ask us which month is the best, we will say March and April. These months give you the feel of spring. So you can enjoy your time at the beach and water parks without having a fear of catching a cold. Moreover, the state isn’t as busy during these months as it is in comparison to the other months on the list.

The weather in Mississippi across the year is different. It is said that Mississippi is one of the hottest states in the USA. One time the temperature in Mississippi went above 90 F, and the entire USA was amazed and dying at the same time.

But with winter, there is no difference. The weather is extremely cold, so sitting on the sandy shores can leave you freezing to death. July is the hottest month, while January is the coldest. But if you give it a close thought, the most critical places in the USA are museums, and the weather is not really influential on the buildings. Air conditioners and heaters are always turned on.

But the museums are not the only place you will visit during your trip, so you need to have an idea of the weather in Mississippi. There is enough snowfall during the winter, but not as much as there is in other states. The Mississippi River does not freeze entirely during the winter, but a layer of ice covers the entire river.

From November to January, winter takes a toll on Mississippi. As far as the summers are concerned, they are pretty long. They start at the end of April and last until August. Autumn enters the state during October but does not stay for long.

If we talk about spring, then there isn’t any such month that represents spring. However, March and April give you a feeling of spring. And that is why these two months are the best for a family vacation to the state of Mississippi.

As for summers, there isn’t much heat, but humidity is at its peak. But don’t think you won’t have to face any sort of heat during the summer. It is summer for a reason. But the water parks, such as Dunn’s Falls Park, make the day bearable with all the fun rides.

You can roam around in shorts and dresses for as long as you are wearing sunblock.

The duration of your vacation is the most contentious aspect of trip planning. When would you like to go, or how long would you like to stay here? These questions and more are part of every family trip.

As far as Mississippi is concerned, the perfect length of time to spend in this state is around four to six days. If you can manage it, a week is also great. But for an average family, four days are enough in Mississippi. You can enjoy different things during this time, and things will not go out of budget.

You can, however, take as much or as little time as you choose. The answer also depends on the time of year you want to travel to Mississippi.

Suppose you visit the state during the months of March and April; we recommend you make your trip five days long. For other months, three to four days are enough. This is because the weather in Mississippi is friendly during the months of March and April but not really that great during the other months.

However, this is also contingent upon how many days you feel you can handle comfortably. You’ll need to consider many factors, including your financial plan, to achieve your goal. If you only have three days to spend in Mississippi, you’ll be wishing you had more time the second you arrive.

One of the best things for youngsters to learn and enjoy in Mississippi is the various interactive exhibits. However, Mississippi has more to offer your kids than just this. Your children will have nonstop fun throughout this tour.

You can visit the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and take the kids to the Jackson Zoo on the same day, as both places are close to each other. If your kids love water parks, don’t think twice before taking them to any water park in Mississippi, as all are great.

The Tupelo Buffalo Park is also a great option; the kids will enjoy their time there. The Margaritaville Resort Biloxi is a place where kids can enjoy a game room, eat great food, and do almost anything. It is an all-in-one place.

If you want your kids to learn a little about mammals, take them to the Center of Marine Mammal Studies. Your kids will love it more than their school trips. The Hattiesburg Zoo is also great for a day to spend with kids. They can meet new animals there, and the zoo makes sure nothing gets out of hand.

You can take your kids to Holly Springs, as this place offers a rich history and fun at the same time. The Elvis Presley Center is a place for both kids and adults. There are different zoos and parks around this center so that you can enjoy your time here with kids.

These are not the only things you can do with kids in Mississippi. There are a few more options, but those won’t fit into the schedule if you are visiting for a week or so.

In terms of hotels and resorts, Mississippi stands behind many US states. There is no problem with visiting Mississippi except for the hotels. There are good options, but they are pretty expensive. It is hard to find an economical hotel or resort in Mississippi. However, it is not impossible.

There are options that are ideal and provide the service that you get from a luxury hotel. Some of these lie in the center of the state, while a few are on the coast. You must select the one that lies close to your destination. For example, if you want to go to the state park, choose a hotel that is close to the state park. This will save you a lot of time that you can spend on other activities.

We did our best and made a list of the best family hotels in Mississippi. They are:

  • Hard Rock Hotel and Casino
  • Beau Rivage
  • Best Western Seaway Inn
  • Harrah’s Gulf Coast
  • Margaritaville Resort
  • Golden Nugget Biloxi Casino & Resort
  • The Lodge at Jackson Hole

We know these options are few, and since Mississippi is not a big state, the best hotels are not many. These, however, are great for a stay with family. The staff and the rooms and suites are outstanding. Many of these hotels provide an indoor swimming pool as well as bars. So if you want to enjoy yourself when the kids are sleeping, the hotel will make sure to provide you with fun.

The Lodge at Jackson Hole is among the best resorts in the entire state of Mississippi. They give you a feel for cowboys, and the breakfast there is fantastic. You can book their deluxe king suite if you want to enjoy the best. The same is the case with the other hotels on the list.

What’s the Average Cost of a Hotel in Mississippi?

The average cost of hotels in Mississippi lies around $140 to $150 per night. This is not a bad average and suits almost everyone. Most of these hotels and resorts provide free breakfast service, which justifies the price of their one-night stay.

Luxurious hotels charge significantly more because of the extra space, service, and comfort they provide. Expenses at a top-tier Mississippi hotel might average $250 per night. However, you do not need to spend so much on a hotel because it is a vacation.

Since you can get the same service from the hotels on our list, going for the expensive options will be foolish. However, this does not mean you cannot go to any other hotel in Mississippi. If you find a better option, do give it a try.

A wise man once stated, “Food reveals the true nature of man.” Mississippi’s cuisine is a window into the state’s welcoming culture. Options exist to cater to various cultural preferences. However, the most popular dish from Mississippi is a true reflection of the state’s inhabitants.

There are many traditional food points in Mississippi. The following list will give you an idea of the best restaurants and markets in Mississippi.

  • The Iron Horse Grill
  • The Shed Barbeque & Blues Joint
  • Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza and Ice Cream Joint
  • Chuck E. Cheese
  • Woody’s Roadside Biloxi
  • Strawberry Cafe
  • Bops’ Frozen Custard
  • Rooster’s
  • Primos Cafe

There are a lot more names we want to add to this list, but that will leave you confused. For breakfast, Primos Cafe is the best option. Other restaurants on the list are great for dinner and lunch. Bops’ Frozen Custard is the perfect spot for a great dessert during the summer. And it is also one of the essential food places you must visit when in Mississippi.

Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza and Ice Cream Joint is great for when you want a quick and cheesy dinner. Their pizzas are the best in Mississippi, and they are always busy. So make sure to reach the restaurant a little earlier so you can find an empty table.

Now that you know about the best activities and spots in Mississippi for kids, now is the time to think about the entire family. Day trips are an essential part of family vacations. Without them, a trip lacks the feel of a trip.

There are many one-day trip options, but they are not the best for the whole family. The following is a list of a few day trip options you can choose from.

  • Kirkwood National Golf Club
  • Lynn Meadows Discovery Center
  • Rodney Ghost Town
  • Biedenharn Coca Cola Museum
  • Strawberry Plains Audubon Center
  • Mississippi Museum
  • Vicksburg National Military Park
  • Gulfs Islands Waterpark
  • Antebellum Mansions in Natchez

These are a few options that are great for a one-day family trip. There are more options, but it is impossible for us to fit each into this article. The Antebellum Mansions in Mississippi will leave you stunned if you are an architecture lover. You will never want to leave this place.

If you want a spooky day, Rodney Ghost Town is the best place in Mississippi. A few museums can be found on our list, but they are not the only ones in Mississippi. There are other options, and if they fall close to your other sites in the travel plan, there is no problem visiting them.

The few water parks and resorts on our list are the ones that stand at the top of their categories. In short, all of these options are great, and it depends on you to select the ones that feel the best for you. Remember that these are just options and not the only ones in Mississippi. If you know a better place, we recommend giving it a try.

You should be aware that you will be traveling a lot when you are in Mississippi. We’re talking several hours here, so consider that. To get to Lamar House Museum, for instance, from Natchez National Historical Park, it would take about four or five hours.

From this, you can get an idea of what we meant when we said we did a lot of traveling. The public transportation system in Mississippi is not the best. If you have been to Texas or New York, you will be disappointed by the transportation system in Mississippi.

Nonetheless, if you are traveling alone, there is no problem with using public transport to reach different locations during your trip. But the same is not the case when traveling with kids. Kids ask for comfort during trips, even if the ride is only a few minutes.

You do not want to hold a crying kid while traveling in Mississippi. So the first thing we will ask you to do is not take public transportation. If you are in touch with a travel agent, you can ask them to arrange a car for you. This will be a better and cheaper option in many ways.

Not only will the kids love it, but you will also feel free to go about anywhere. There will be no time limits or anything. So, renting a car is the best option if you are a free bird. However, if this option does not fall within your budget, you can choose shared rides.

These rides are cheap and are better if you are not good at driving. You can save a lot of money and time this way. But if your kids are not the type to share their car ride with a stranger, this won’t be the right option.

In the end, there is one thing we have to say about traveling in Mississippi. It is not cheap. You are wrong if you think that the travel cost will be the same as it is in Pennsylvania. So if you have to pay more, it is better to pay for the best. And that is renting a car that is perfect for your family.

You can decide between the different models and make this arrangement before leaving for Mississippi. Do not think that you will be able to get a car right after stepping into Mississippi. Such things must be done before leaving for the state.

You can either fly to Mississippi or drive there. If not, you can take a cruise to Mississippi. But that obviously depends on your budget. There is one more option, and that is using the railways.

The first thing you must know is that all these options are valid and great for getting to Mississippi. But the final decision depends on your budget. The Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers Airport lies in the east of Mississippi and is the best way to get to this state.

As for the railways, the time duration and distance vary depending on the state you are coming from. This won’t be an option if you come from another country. It would also be uneconomical to travel to some other state and then use the railways to get to Mississippi.

Driving is only recommended if you live in a state close to Mississippi; otherwise, it can be a stressful and lengthy experience that the kids may not like. And last but not least, a cruise on the Mississippi River is one of the most spectacular ways to get to Mississippi. The cruise itself will be a lot of fun, and that will only enhance your time in Mississippi.

Our personal favorite is the cruise, as you will be able to enjoy your time traveling. The sailing experience will make your kids fall in love with the water.

Budget-friendly vacationers looking to go to Mississippi by air or rail have a few good options.

kid friendly places to visit in mississippi

Mississippi is a great state—perhaps the best in the USA. However, this does not mean that you can leave your kids alone without keeping an eye on them. Crimes are a part of every state. No matter how much the government tries, there is no way it can stop each and every human from committing a crime.

GPS Tracking

On family vacations, losing your child is the one thought every parent has at the back of their mind. Always remind your child to turn on the global positioning system (GPS) on any electronic device they own. It’s not like it’s 1990 anymore when kids didn’t have cell phones; now everyone has one, so it’s essential to utilize them effectively.

Meetup Spot

Before leaving your hotel, tell your kids about the day’s plan. Make sure they remember every place you will be visiting. If you visit a water park, zoo, or beach, select one spot as the meetup spot. If your kid gets lost, they will come to that spot and wait for you to find them.

Say No to Strangers

Tell your kids not to take anything from strangers. This is one of the significant tricks kidnappers use, as kids easily fall for it. Whether it is candy or anything, make sure your kid is well-trained so that he/she does not fall for the trick.

Necessary Medicines

Always keep a first-aid box in your luggage. Mississippi hospitals are expensive, and you won’t want to visit them. So it is better to bring the necessary medicines along on your trip.

These are a few tips you must consider and act upon while on a trip anywhere. These will help you in ways you cannot even imagine. We wish you and your kids a safe and fun trip to Mississippi.

kid friendly places to visit in mississippi

Mississippi is an excellent place for kids. Especially the ones that love art and history. Although it might not be the most idyllic setting for young children, this location is a nirvana for those aged six and up. The state of Mississippi is committed to preserving all of its diverse cultural traditions and customs.

The food in Mississippi is excellent, and the desserts are the best ones so far. Make sure to plan your trip according to this guide, and you will not encounter any difficulties.

Cheers to a fun trip to Mississippi!

Our Favorite Towns to Visit in Mississippi

kid friendly places to visit in mississippi

Mississippi doesn't get its personality from bustling metropolises, state-of-the-art stadiums, or pristinely pruned roadways. It gets it from old-fashioned town squares, crumbling antebellum homes, and highways marked with blues and barbecue. Civil War battlefields tell tales of a peppered past, while the Blues Highway sings a nostalgic song. The quirky coast makes you want to stay awhile, the northern reaches send you on a path to the Appalachian foothills, and the Delta commands the soul of the state. The melting pot of characters and history that makes up Mississippi is something even some of us Southerners don't understand, but we do know that the collection of charming small towns down on the coast, along the river, and up to the mountains gives us a privileged peek inside. These are the gems of Mississippi , and we've rounded up our best picks. Check out our favorite towns in Mississippi.

Ocean Springs

The Gulf Coast has come a long way since being hammered into devastation by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with restoration and cleanup efforts slowly giving life back to this quaint coastal town. Locally owned shops, galleries, and restaurants infuse your trip with the quirkiness and laidback attitude of the small town, while the warm ocean breeze calls for a relaxed mindset. Pay a visit to the The Shed Barbecue and Blues Joint , a rustic rickshaw of a restaurant that started with a shed made from dumpster-diving finds and expanded as the locals' love for the hometown joint increased. (It's now a full family affair, with grandma manning the beer bar.) You'll find dinner and a show with mouthwatering barbecue and live blues. ocean-springs.ms

Named for the Native Americans that once settled the area, this river town is steeped in character that you can see, taste, and feel around every corner. Historic antebellum homes with column-lined porches and a regal demeanor are flanked by towering live oak trees draped heavily with Spanish moss, showing the inherent historic respect this small town has for Southern culture. Tour historic homes before stopping in King's Tavern, the oldest standing building in Natchez, for an unreal atmosphere and wood-fired meal (or Roux 61 for your fill on authentic Cajun seafood). Fun annual events, such as the Natchez Biscuit Festival in September and Great Mississippi River Balloon Race in October, keep Southerners going back year after year. visitnatchez.org

Bay St. Louis

This artsy beach town feels old-fashioned Southern, but with a twist, with its offbeat storefronts, creative community, and time-worn architecture. You can venture to the popular Old Town for shops, art galleries, and good eats like The Buttercup on Second Street restaurant. Just minutes away from Main Street, you'll find the Depot District with the local Bay St. Louis Little Theatre. And don't skip a stop at The Mockingbird Café , a coffee house by day and music venue at night. Bay St. Louis one of those nostalgic towns that you'll find yourself missing after you leave. baystlouisoldtown.com

We can't figure out the je ne sais quoi of the Mississippi Delta. It's the soul of the state, the birthplace of blues, and the product of both historic joy and strife. It's full of the most Southern small towns, incredible hidden spots including ruins and abandoned towns, and majorly good eats; and Cleveland is one of those special towns. You have to go to Delta Meat Market , a butcher shop and farm-to-table restaurant located downtown, for amazing upscale Southern cuisine. Venture to Dockery Farms, where a cotton gin and restored service station still stand; but also where, in the early 1900s, impoverished black tenant workers worked by day and played the blues by night. Charley Patton, an early Delta blues trailblazer, learned the blues while at this farm. visitclevelandms.com

This Southern college town is more than just a four-year destination for co-eds; it's one of our favorite places to head during a trip with the family, for a weekend girlfriend getaway, or on a Mississippi road trip. We like to stick close to the Square for the cute shops, delicious restaurants, and charming scenery. Book a room at The Graduate for its prime location and hip atmosphere (rooftop terrace bar included), and shop around at popular spots like Cicada and Square Books while you're out and about. You can grab a bite at City Grocery for your Southern food, Oxford Canteen for your greasy food, and Bottletree Bakery for your sweet treats. visitoxfordms.com

Other than being another must-stop in the Mississippi Delta, Greenville is home to some mighty fine eats. You have to pop into the popular Doe's Eat Place for fine Southern cooking and a cheerful welcome by Aunt Flo, the 91-year-old local icon who has been helping out at the restaurant for decades. But you can't leave the town until you've stopped at the easy-to-miss Scott's Hot Tamales . The red-and-white shack is barely the size of a snow cone stand, but it's been serving up famous tamales (beef brisket, corn meal, and a whole bunch of spices wrapped in corn husks) since the 1950s. You can attend the Delta Hot Tamale Festival every October for tamale cook-offs, countless tamale vendors, and a Hot Tamale eating contest. The small town has seen the likes of great Southern writers, famous blues musicians, and everything in between—all of which helped form that Mississippi soul. Popular Delta towns Clarksdale and Greenwood are just short drives away. visitgreenville.org

Corinth is the perfect destination for the history buff. You can head to the Veranda House, which served as headquarters for Confederates during the Civil War, and you definitely need to see the crossroads from which the bucolic town gets its namesake. It was originally named Cross City because of its notable cross-junction of railroads; but it was suggested by a local to change the name to Corinth in homage to the ancient Greek city that also served as a crossroads. You can pretty much hop, skip, and jump to countless historic sites from the Civil War and from earlier settlements. Your trip wouldn't be complete without a stop at one of the oldest running drugstore and soda fountains, Borroum's Drug Store and Soda Fountain , established in 1865. Old-fashioned staples such as vanilla, grape, and cherry sodas pair perfectly with cheesy melts and burgers. corinth.net

About a 30-minute drive northeast of Hattiesburg , this destination oozes Southern small town charm. It's now known for being the Waco, Texas, of Mississippi; as Erin and Ben Napier film the HGTV renovation show, Home Town , in Laurel, that promotes family-oriented and community values. You feel that sense of community while strolling down Main Street with its local shops and restaurants. Cafe la Fleur is a go-to spot for lunch or dinner with its New Orleans flair, while you can finish off the day at Sweet Somethings Bakery for cookies, candies, and truffles. The Napiers' downtown shop, Laurel Mercantile Co., is filled with heirloom wares and inspired goods to bring home. laurelms.com

Make sure to pencil in time to take in the gorgeous view of the sunset on the bay during a trip to this small coastal town. We love the traditional Southern exterior and sleek modern interior of the beachfront White House Hotel , and you can cook your own catch at local restaurants, such as Shaggy's or Morton's. Two Biloxi natives were featured in the 2016 lineup of legendary captains and crews (Hats off to you, Captain Jay and Captain Kenny), so if you're there during milder temperatures, make sure to charter a fishing trip. And, of course, you can visit one of the over-the-top casinos that the area is known for. biloxi.ms.us

Located only about a half hour from Jackson, Canton is filled to the brim with historic architecture and homes, most notably the Madison County Courthouse. The courthouse square is the local hub speckled with quaint shops and restaurants and the host of the Canton Flea Market. At Christmastime, this town is decorated with some 200,000 lights, everywhere from the historic courthouse square to the vintage carousel and carriage rides. The town even served as the backdrop for famous films such as A Time to Kill ; O Brother, Where Art Thou? ; and My Dog Skip , making it fun to visit for movie fans. cityofcantonms.com

This northern Mississippi town formed in the 19th century as the location of a gristmill and saw mill on the banks of the Tallahatchie River and was the birthplace of great Southern writer William Faulkner. You can meander your way (or bike, which is the popular choice) along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains on the 44-mile-long Rails to Trails pathway that begins in historic downtown New Albany, and you check out the Ingomar Indian Mounds to get a taste of history. The historic downtown is full of parks, specialty shops, eateries, and antique stores. Stop in The Vintage Market for an authentic soda shop experience complete with a coke float or ice cream sundae. newalbany.ms

Port Gibson

Port Gibson made its name as the city dubbed "too beautiful to burn" by Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War, keeping it safe from the blazes of his war campaign. The town abounds with sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so you can make your way through the relics kept safe from the rampages of time. Don't miss the Windsor Ruins, which consist of freestanding Corinthian columns from the largest Greek Revival antebellum ever built in the area (but you wouldn't be able to tell; the columns are all that's left )—it's eerily historic and incredibly cool. Port Gibson was also home to The Rabbit's Foot Company , a prominent player in the blues movement in Mississippi started by Pat Chappelle. It's now marked as a stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail. portgibsonms.org

Vicksburg is another favorite for history buffs due to the Vicksburg National Military Park and battlefield as well as its Greek Revival, Italianate, and Victorian homes dating back to the late 1700s. Learn about the siege of Vicksburg at local museums; tour local mansions; or visit downtown boutiques, antique shops, and galleries. Eat in an old service station resurrected as the Historic Klondyke Trading Post , which serves up some of the city's best hamburgers and fried catfish as well as specials like pistolettes stuffed with crawfish etoufee. Then try your luck at the casinos docked on the Mississippi River. visitvicksburg.com

Tupelo in northern Mississippi is a must-see for fans of the King of Rock 'n Roll. Elvis Presley's birthplace puts it on the map in the Americana Music Triangle, along with Memphis and Nashville. Make sure to stop at the two-room home Elvis was raised in along with his childhood church—but take note that this town is also rich with Civil War and Natchez Trace historical sites. Get a bite to eat at one of Tupelo's many barbecue shacks or diners, including Johnnie's Drive-In, which the future King used to frequent as a boy. Then drop by the Blue Canoe , the town's original home for live music. tupelo.net

10 favorite kid friendly places to visit in oxford, mississippi.

kid friendly places to visit in mississippi

Shop the Post

At only a short 1 hour drive from Memphis, TN, Oxford is a favorite of ours to visit. It’s such a short drive, but there is SO much to do there. The town has so many great restaurants, boutiques, and more, and it’s such a cute little spot. They have so many great spots right on the square, so it’s super convenient and walkable for families with kids too.

You can read about our last visit here . Believe it or not, it was Grayson’s 4th time visiting! We try to go a couple of times each year. It’s been so fun watching him explore there over the years. And I love how kid-friendly the town becomes each time we come to visit. It’s a perfect spot for families and kids! Keep reading for my recommendations on our favorite spots to visit while in town.

We stayed at our favorite, Chancellor’s House . We always stay here when we are in town, and it is perfect for large families. They have adjoining rooms, rooms connected to the terrace, and snacks in the lobby (Grayson approves!) The rooms are much more spacious than the other hotels in the area, and it’s perfect for families and kids. Keep reading for my recommendations on our favorite spots to visit while in town.

2.) Get a good book at Square Books Jr. This is one of our absolute favorite spots on the square. They also have Square Books for the adults too. = ) But for the kids, they can find such a big selection of age-appropriate books and even some great toys to keep them entertained all weekend long. We left with a garbage truck book and a wooden track crossing and a crane set. They came in handy all week!

4.) Go for a walk at Bailey Woods Trail . After exploring Rowan Oak, we went on a little walk down this trail. It is a short trail, but it’s always one of my and Matt’s favorite ones in the area.

5.) While you’re exploring the square, go eat lunch at South Depot Taco Shop on the square. They have tons of gluten-free options, and the food was so good! We tried a burrito bowl and some corn tacos with grilled chicken and buffalo sauce and ranch. Yum! Matt’s favorite was the bbq tacos. There is plenty of room inside, you order quickly at the counter, and the restaurant is lively so no worrying about your toddler being too loud in here. Win-win!

7.) Get dinner at Lamar Yard . This is a favorite of ours because of how kid-friendly it is. The food is good, and they have a fenced-in area outside where the kids can play and swing after finishing dinner.

8.) Get ice cream at Oxford Creamery . Grayson and I got the chocolate ice cream, Matt got butter pecan, and we all raved about how good it was. They also have fresh donuts they bake if you would rather have a donut than ice cream. Either way, it is all so yummy!

9.) Go play at Avent Park . This is the best park in town, and it’s perfect for kids. If the weather is nice, you will definitely want to add this stop to your list.

10.) Get some cookies at Insomnia Cookies . They have gluten-free options too! And ice cream! We also swing by here. It is right on the square and so convenient as you’re leaving or heading back to your hotel.

We had such a great trip in Oxford this time, and we can’t wait to come back again this summer when it warms up even more. Grayson has been coming here since he was only a couple of months old, and as he gets older, there is even more and more for him to do here each time. Have you been to Oxford, Mississippi before? What are your favorite spots?
