Justin Bieber's 'Purpose': Every Song Ranked | Billboard

Justin Bieber has plenty to celebrate on the one-year anniversary of his latest album, Purpose.

Following the Nov. 13, 2015 release of Purpose , Bieber landed his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (with two more after that) and debuted atop the Billboard 200. So Billboard thought why not celebrate with JB and relive the greatness that is Purpose ? with a ranking of all the songs from his fourth studio album?

Check out our list of Purpose ? songs from the not-so-great to the cream of the crop. And of course we included songs from the deluxe version, because when it comes to the Biebs, we don’t mess around.

18. “I’ll Show You”

Love Taylor Swift's Style? Here Are Some Eras-Inspired Looks to Wear to Her Tour

Bieber has proven that he can put his own spin on a R&B track just as well as he can on a sugary sweet pop hit, but this just kind of fell flat. It doesn’t do much for Bieber’s voice and the beat sounds somewhat similar to the underground hip-hop you listened to in middle school. There’s definitely better ways he “showed” us his musical chops on this album.

Trending on Billboard

17. “Mark My Words”

For an album opener, “Mark My Words” isn’t exactly what one would picture to introduce a collection filled with some awesome tunes. The story does ? have a certain significance that feels right for an intro, but the melody to go along with it doesn’t really match up. And if the “na-na-na-na-na-na-na-nas” were supposed to be catchy, Bieber kind of missed the “Mark” on that one.

16. “Life Is Worth Living”

It almost feels cynical to put this song so low when the meaning of it is pretty poignant. But there’s just not much magic in “Life Is Worth Living” — at least compared to the others around it. Something about it is a little more pious and sing-songy than we were bargaining for.

15. “All In It”

A more successful attempt at a slick R&B track, Bieber managed to craft a head-bopper with “All In It.” But even with the titular phrase serving as both the hook and the chorus, the song loses its appeal the more those three words are repeated.

14. “No Sense” (feat. Travis Scott)

One thing to commend Bieber for on this album is the variety he achieved on the collabs, despite having three rappers contribute. While pairing with Travis Scott was a good move for the Biebs, it actually kind of backfired on him — Scott was the best part of the otherwise not super exciting track.

13. “Trust”

Bieber doesn’t exactly need to do anything except breathe to make girls swoon, but he really shows off his ability to bring the girls to the yard with this croon. It is a little on the repetitive side, but his silky vocals void any sort of obnoxiousness that could result from singing the same lines over and over.

12. “Children”

Although meaningful lyrics about being a “visionary for a change” don’t typically come in Skrillex-laden tracks, the DJ/producer came together with Bieber to prove that the result isn’t as strange as you would think. When that explosive beat drops you really pay no mind to what Bieber’s singing about anyway.

11. “No Pressure”

The climbing vocals in the chorus make for one catchy little ditty in “No Pressure,” and with Big Sean providing a smooth rap slipping in references to Yoko Ono and Empire , there’s something somewhat artful about this collaboration.

10. “Get Used To It”

A couple of the five extra songs on Bieber’s deluxe version of ?Purpose ? practically gave the phrase “bonus track” a new meaning, and “Get Used To It” is one of them. Some people may not like being told they need to “get used to” someone loving or checking in on them, but Bieber delivered the rather stalker-esque lyrics in such a bubbly, bumpin’ way that you forget Stockholm syndrome may be a risk factor of listening to it.

9. “Company”

Now that we’ve reached the halfway point, it’s becoming a little clearer that Bieber was a culprit of writing some awfully repetitive lyrics on ? Purpose ? . But when it happens in a song that’s this slick and danceable, it’s hard to care that he says the word “company” almost 20 times.

8. “We Are” (feat. Nas)

While there may be catchier choruses on Purpose ?, Bieber’s masterful runs in this track make for quite the bumping tune. But it’s not the most radio-friendly song of sorts, and frankly no rap feature will ever compare to the epic rhymes Ludacris laid down on “Baby.” (C’mon, using the word playground in a rap? Genius.)

7. “The Feeling” (feat. Halsey)

This collaboration probably could’ve been just as much of an earworm without the assistance from Halsey, but the team-up on “The Feeling” made it practically irresistible. And if you aren’t convinced by the “feeling” this song gives you just by listening to it, watch their steamy Today ? show performance of it and suddenly you’ll see why it’s so high on this list.

6. “Purpose”

A bit cheesy (especially the talking track that closes out the song), “Purpose” is a perfectly heartfelt thank you to those die-hard Beliebers that surely makes them melt as soon as they hear the tinkling of the piano. Plus, the stripped-down sound makes for a nice reminder that he’s actually a great singer.

5. “Where Are U Now” (feat. Skrillex and Diplo)

Considering there’s a Grammy involved with this one (Bieber’s first, at that), we couldn’t not? give it a top 5 ranking. But it’s not just the hardware that makes this song great. It’s definitely a club banger — no matter how annoying you may find the dolphin-sounding squeal of the beat drop — and showcases Bieber’s voice in a way we didn’t realize it could be delivered.

4. “Been You”

Perhaps one of the bigger odes to the poppy goodness Bieber delivered in the ? My World era, it’s not so surprising that he made it a deluxe track rather than putting it on the regular LP — but we’re just glad he decided to share its glory with the world. With a bouncy, almost ’80s-style beat and swoon-worthy vocals in all aspects of the song, “Been You” is one ?Purpose ? track we’re still waiting to hear on the radio.

3. “Love Yourself”

Whether you were riding the Bieber train before Purpose ? or not, there’s a relatable element to the phrase “my momma don’t like you and she likes everyone” — and an epic delivery of the rest of the “screw you”-type lyrics — that makes “Love Yourself” an appealing tune to even the biggest of Bieber haters.

2. “What Do You Mean?”

Bieber couldn’t have picked a better song as his (somewhat) comeback single, and it was certainly worthy of being his first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. While Bieber was called out for promoting rape culture with the lyrics, the lighthearted bounciness of “What Do You Mean?” relays an innocence that makes you think Bieber is legitimately posing the question — in one heck of a catchy way.

1. “Sorry”

Call it cliche — “Sorry” is  Purpose ?’s most successful song (7x platinum) — but there’s no denying this song is an absolute jam. Bieber had dished some pretty memorable pop hits in the past, but there’s nothing quite like the masterpiece that is “Sorry.” From the moment the beat starts, the song makes it tough to not ? shake your hips, sing along, or simply lose all control of your body… and that’s the sign of a powerhouse track.

The purpose of the Justin Bieber Purpose Tour? To complete the teen sensation's transformation

justin bieber purpose tour songs

Justin Bieber brought the Purpose World Tour to Glendale Wednesday in the midst of one of modern music's most successful cases of a teen sensation pulling off the rarely managed transformation from the shriek-inducing mass hysteria that made him famous in the first place to a more sustainable career.

He's grown the music up without abandoning the fans who sang along to every word of "Baby" Wednesday. And he's done it in a way that's definitely resonated with the masses, sending three consecutive hit singles from the "Purpose" album to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 — a pinnacle the superstar, now 22, had never reached before.

To say he put the focus squarely on the "Purpose" album would be grossly understating just how squarely he was focused on the sharing of that album, which he played in its entirety — not in order, but he did all 13 songs (while also dusting off two bonus tracks from the deluxe edition, "Been You" and "Get Used to it").

The oldest song he played was "Baby," telling the fans "Let's bring it back!" before leading them all in a celebratory singalong while flanked by dancers as the screens behind him filled with colorful graffiti art. It seemed like he was really into it, embracing that part of his story with a smile while boldly moving on.

Highlights of the set, which found him backed by a group of extremely talented musicians, included all three hits from "Purpose." "Love Yourself" was the climax of a solo unplugged mini-set performed on a red velvet sofa, inspiring a massive singalong. That same unplugged mini-set also included an unreleased song, "Insecurities."

"Sorry" was saved for the best of all possible encores, bringing the night to a rousing finale with the quadruple-platinum smash that stands, for now at least, as Bieber's finest hour. Of course, a number of his biggest fans may focus more on other aspects of Wednesday's performance of "Sorry," which featured Bieber being "rained on" after removing his shirt.

He also reached back to his previous effort, "Believe," for two obvious highlights — a rocked-up rendition of "Boyfriend," which found him surrounded by dancers in LED bodysuits, and the pulsating EDM vibe of "As Long As You Love Me."

And that EDM vibe hit harder on "Where Are U Now," the song he recorded with Diplo and Skrillex that launched his string of hits last year.

The production was state-of-the-art throughout, from the multi-tiered staging itself to the lighting, the pyrotechnics and hydraulics, and video treatments that accompanied each song.

The concert began with a video of Bieber stuck inside a glass cube, after which the singer made his entrance, stuck inside his own glass cube, which rose above the stage as he sang "Mark My Words" while marking the walls of the cube with words you couldn't really read.

It should be pointed out, this being Arizona, that the star was wearing a Coyotes jersey when he made his first appearance. Over the course of the night, Bieber's T-shirt selections would go on to range from Tupac to Marilyn Manson and the Misfits.

Seeing Justin Bieber rock a Misfits 20 Years of Terror shirt while singing "What Do You Mean?" can now be safely added to the list of biggest smiles this world has to offer.

There was plenty of slick choreography and acrobatics. And while Bieber's only acrobatic moments were a few flips on a trampoline suspended on a mini-stage above the audience while singing "Company," he's only gotten better as a dancer. And the moves he did suited both his image and the tone of his performance.

Bieber didn't speak a lot, but when he did it tended toward the inspirational. In setting up "I'll Show You," Bieber told the crowd, "All my life, I always had people tell me that I wasn't good enough. I wasn't strong enough. You know what I always told those people? I'll show you."

That drive to show his legions of detractors that he's good enough is probably what's driven Bieber to the heights he reached on "Purpose." And the good news is, those same detractors would appear to be as unconvinced as ever, writing him off as a matter of course.

And if the Purpose World Tour has taught us anything, it's that those people who insist he isn't good enough will only make him stronger. You don't have to mark my words. He'll show you.

Justin Bieber's 'Purpose' Tour Needs These Songs

justin bieber purpose tour songs

You can say what you want about Justin Bieber, but you can’t deny that the dude makes good, nay, great music. It just is the way that it is. So, whether you’re the number one Belieber or if you secretly and begrudgingly hit replay on your “This Is Definitely Not A Justin Bieber Playlist” playlist because you just can’t quit him, the news that Bieber has a Purpose tour coming up is pretty much a universally exciting thing. Especially when you consider the plethora of catchy songs over his career that he has to choose from, in addition to all the shiny new ones he’ll certainly deliver to the crowd.

A concert line up is a beautiful thing. Not only do we get a mix of old and new tunes, but remixes, covers, and medleys that we probably wouldn’t get to experience otherwise. And, there’s always the possibility of surprise guests showing up to duet. With that in mind, I think I have a pretty good idea of what the ultimate line up would look like, thus far, for the Purpose Tour. But, you know, there’s always room for those songs yet to be released and surprise jams.

Here’s the Purpose Tour line up I think concert goers need to see Biebs deliver.

1. "Where Are U Now"

I don't know about you, but I picture him ascending from center stage in a cloud of smoke and a sea of strobe lights to this one. It just feels right .

2. "Sorry"

This will, for sure, get everyone up out of their seats.

3. "All That Matters/Heartbreaker" Medley

I think this is a splendid idea. He should really put me on the payroll.

4. "Boyfriend"

I think this may still be my all-time favorite song of his.

5. "Baby"

Because this song should be included in every Biebs show, ever.

6. "I'll Show You"

Raise those phone flashlights, people.

7. "Love Yourself"

Ed Sheeran did good with this one.

8. "Hotline Bling (Remix)"

It's SO GOOD. It's too good. It's also a perfect opportunity to have Drake come onstage.

9. "Confident"

I feel like this song didn't get enough media recognition. The fans would definitely appreciate hearing it, though.

10. "As Long As You Love Me"

11. "The Feeling"

Imagine a surprise duet with Halsey? Imagine Halsey opened for him?!

12. "What Do You Mean?"

Because, duh .

With only a few months separating us from what could be the greatest tour that Biebs has ever done, if these songs don't make the line up, I will be sorely disappointed.

Justin Bieber - Purpose (PURPOSE The Movement)

[Verse 1] Feeling like I’m breathing my last breath Feeling like I’m walking my last steps Look at all of these tears I’ve wept Look at all the promises that I’ve kept [Pre-Chorus] I put my all into your hands Here’s my soul to keep I let you in with all that I can You’re not hard to reach [Chorus] And you bless me with the best gift That I’ve ever known You give me purpose Yeah, you’ve given me purpose [Verse 2] Thinking my journey’s come to an end Sending out a farewell to my friends, for inner peace Ask you to forgive me for my sins, oh would you please? I’m more than grateful for the time we spent, my spirit’s at ease [Pre-Chorus] I put my heart into your hands Learn the lessons you teach No matter when, wherever I am You’re not hard to reach [Chorus] And you’ve given me the best gift That I’ve ever known You give me purpose everyday You give me purpose in every way [Bridge] Oh, you are my everything Oh, you are my everything [Outro (Spoken)] I don’t know if this is wrong, because someone else is telling me that it’s wrong. But I feel this so let me just like try my best not to let this happen again. We weren’t necessarily put in the best position to make the best decisions You can’t be hard on yourself for, these were the cards you were given so you have to understand that these, like that’s not who you are. You know you’re trying to be the best you can be, but that’s all you can do. If you don’t give it all you got, you’re only cheating yourself, give it all you got but if it ends up happening, it ends up happening That’s what’s w– happening with me, it’s like “God, I’m giving it all I’ve got, sometimes I’m weak and I’m going to do it.” And it’s like I’m not giving myself grace, I’m just like understanding that’s just how it is

The musician made the announcement on Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

However, when asked about when his tour will begin, he admitted freely that he had no idea.

“This is the only thing I had to remember, and I don’t remember!” he told DeGeneres, pointing fans to his website for further details. “What am I doing? I’m here to promote an album and a tour, and I’m not doing that!”
