Artic Adventures 8  Day Ring Rd Tour Artic Adventures offered a well rounded 6 day tour of the Island.Central office provided excellent email communications and corrected errors on dates of lodging quickly when brought to their attention. Van for travel was clean, comfortable, ample room under seats and above bins for rental equipment and personal items for the 15 in our group.Charging port, phone holder with pull down tray included in the newer van.Luggage was placed in Uhaul trailer the van pulled behind, tour guide always put the luggage in and out .Our Tour Guide/ Van driver Almar  "Al" had a love for his country that just shined! Our guided tour with crampons at a Glacier was guided by Michael. He was very personable, explained and assisted when needed. He took our tour at the pace we could handle learning a new skill.Whale watching was a tour of a few groups on the ship.Top deck provided a view for about 12 people and the rest of 25 or so had to often miss the show as the boat was often head on instead of turning to allow those on main deck a good view. Back on the van,Al had an enormous amount of information on all the parks, history of landmarks, and a never ending wealth of patience to our countless questions! Everyday he provided the itinerary ,housing for the evening and information on where we could eat during the mid day and evening.Frequent stops every hour or aso were provided for bathroom breaks and drinks.Al encouraged us to switch seats every day to allow a different view for all.He helped us to discover the Northern Lights and invited us out to view them, every night. Al united our diverse group and we are still communicating with each other. The tour had many adventures, an Icelandic Horse Farm visit, an extra fee for Thermal pool swim as well as a beautiful daily waterfall, parks, beaches, hot springs, iceberg coves, seals, and old Volcanic sites.Would highly recommended this tour.

8 Day Around Iceland Winter Minibus Tour

WOW! I can only say great things about my 8 day Ring Road minibus tour of Iceland. Tour Radar(TR #91986) and Troll Expeditions (TE182993) had a 24 hour telephone service and were able to answer all my pretrial questions in a timely manner Erik our driver is also a topnotch guide. He is charming, very knowledgeable about Iceland and many other things. He was extremely helpful...a delightful man. My 17 fellow travelers from many different countries were fun and sociable. I was the oldest in the group (79) and they all took care of me, my suitcase and technology. The van was very beautiful and comfortable.. there were even phone chargers in the ceiling. We took frequent restroom stops and there were great windows for taking pictures from the bus.

Thank you Tröll Expeditions for the memories!

Daily itinerary

A shot from the inside of a cave with a waterfall flowing over it on the South Coast of Iceland.

Day 1 - South Coast of Iceland

Kicking off from Reykjavík you will turn East to explore the most visited region of Iceland – South Coast. Its relative proximity to the capital and abundant picture-perfect, diverse scenery make it a top favourite. The region is dotted world-renowned waterfalls, stretches of unique black beach coastlines and enigmatic moonlike plains.

First on the itinerary are stunning waterfalls. Seljaladnsfoss is a 60 m high single drop that amazes many travellers and locals alike. Seljaladnsfoss is mostly known for the path hidden in the cave that allows you to fully encircle the fall. Just a stone’s throw from Seljalandsfoss is Gljubrabui, often called “The Hidden Waterfall”. This off the beaten path, the smaller 40-meter waterfall is concealed behind a cliff. The third waterfall visited on this day is Skogafoss. This is an impressive 60-meter tall, 15-meter wide waterfall that takes its waters from both Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Next on the agenda is Sólheimajökull glacier. There you can take part in a very unique activity, a Glacier Hike (bookable as an extra). Under the care of your experienced glacier guide, you can put your feet down on the ice and enjoy amazing views. Just before lunch, you will stop at the world-famous Reynisfjara Black Beach. One obvious particularity of this beach is its black-coloured sand, formed from eroded volcanic rocks and, more precisely, lava that hardens when cooled and shatters into billions of tiny particles. For lunch, you will stop in Vík, a charming village located opposite Reynisfjara.

Icebergs floating in the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon in East Iceland.

Day 2 - East Iceland

The eastern part of the country has a calmer and quieter vibe about it. This region of the country is characterized by smaller picture-perfect, pocket-sized towns and villages, each having their own particular charm.

This day starts at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the deepest lake in Iceland powered by the outlets from Vatnajokull Glacier. The calm, crystal-clear surface is full of icebergs floating towards the Atlantic Ocean. Some of them are washed ashore and dazzle like diamonds on the black satin beach which is affectionately the Diamond Beach.

You can also add an amphibious boat tour of the lagoon. This 45-minute long tour will leave you with unforgettable memories. You will get close to the icebergs and remember to keep your head up for seals swimming around.

On this day you will also stop at Vestrahorn Mountain. This is one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland, proudly rising above the mighty ocean.

You will see Djupivogur town located in a deep fjord with trading history dating back to the 16th century and the Lagarfljot area, filled with magnificent natural backdrops and rich folklore.

This day ends in Egillstadir, the capital of Eastern territories. There you can rest in the hotel, or add something unique to that day. You could visit the Vök geothermal pools set on the beautiful Lake Urriðavatn. Hot springs scattered deep underneath the lake heat these exquisitely designed man-made formations allowing its guests to take full advantage of the geothermal waters and their natural healing properties from deep within Iceland’s grounds.

The Grjotagja Geothermal Cave located in the north of Iceland.

Day 3 - The Northern Territories and Lake Mývatn

Setting off from Egillstadir the direction turns North where you will spend two days. Iceland’s Northern territories are characterized by cosmic landscapes, world-renowned natural backdrops merged with rich geology and Norse history.

The day starts with visit by Studlagil Canyon – one of Iceland’s newest findings and best-kept secrets. Turquoise waters of the Jokulsa river run through the canyon, considered by geologists as the biggest collection of basalt columns in the country.

The highlight of the day is a visit at Dettifoss, considered as Europe’s most powerful waterfall with 500 cubic meters of water flowing over its 45-metre drop.

On day 3 you will travel around Lake Myvatn, one of the wonders of Iceland. Myvatn is nestled in a quiet area of the country’s Northern territory with rich and colourful fauna and flora and yet again, unbeatable natural sceneries.

You will be amazed by the power of Mother Nature while visiting the Hverir Geothermal Fields scattered with mud lakes, steaming holes and colourful grounds. Then you will visit the Grjotagja Geothermal Cave, Dimmuborgir, Hverfjall Volcano and Krafla just to name a few.

Between lake Mývatn and Akureyri lies the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’, or, in Icelandic, Goðafoss. Its crystal-clear waters flow from the Skjálfandafljót River, high up in the Highlands through Bardadalur valley to reach its grounds and cascades down a 12-metre drop creating swirling green-coloured forms in the waters below.

If you wish to relax in truly Icelandic way then add a visit in Mývatn Natural Geothermal SPA. This man-made pool offers not only relaxing soak in silky geothermal waters but also amazing views over Lake Myvatn itself.

This day ends in Akureyri – the capital of Northern Iceland.

Visitors spotting a whale tail in the waters off the coast of North Iceland.

Day 4 - Whale watching and scenic North Coast

Your final day starts in the city of Akureyri, the country’s northern gateway, which is home to a little over 20.000 inhabitants, making it the second-largest city in Iceland after Reykjavik. Akureyri is considered as its own distinctive mini version of Reykjavik, being the central business, cultural and service hub for the northern territories. As an add-on, you can take a boat tour searching for the whales breeding in ice-cold waters of Eyjafjordur Fjord.

Then it is time to turn towards Reykjavik. On the way, you can enjoy unique landscapes and the scenic drive along the North Coast with stops at Hvitserkur Rock and Kolugljufur Canyon with a spectacular waterfall

The estimated arrival time in Reykjavik is at 9 PM (21:00).

  • DAY 1 – South Coast of Iceland

Today we will discover the beautiful south coast of Iceland.

In this part of Iceland, you can see many of the most beautiful places in the country. A great combination of ice, lava fields, lagoons, huge mountains, volcanoes, and a rough black coastline. There are also plenty of incredible waterfalls in the area, such as Skógafoss , Seljalandsfoss , and the secret waterfall Gljufrabui . We will enjoy the pure nature and visit many places of interest. We will also stop at Reynisfjara Black Beach , the most beautiful beach in the country. The last stop on this day is Skaftafell National Park – a hiker’s paradise.

Optional activity:

Glacier Hike (3 hours) – minimum age 8 (available from April to October)  – put the crampons on and enjoy the magnificent, raw views around you. Under the care of an experienced, skilled, and qualified glacier guide, you will discover mind-blowing places, great crevasses, and unique ice formations. It is necessary to wear solid hiking shoes, and highly recommend wearing warm, windproof jackets. That is all you need to bring – we provide the crampons and all the necessary equipment to walk safely on the glacier. This activity takes approximately 3 hours.

  • DAY 2 – Adventure in the East

This day starts with a visit to Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon – world famous glacial lake filled with floating icebergs falling from the biggest glacier in Europe – Vatnajökull. Some of them are being washed back ashore and dazzling in contrast to the black sand beach called Diamond Beach – nearly as famous as the lagoon itself. This area is also known for reaching wildlife, including grey and harbor seals swimming in ice-cold waters or resting on the shore.

Then it is on to mountain Vestrahorn (one of the best spots for photos in Iceland) and continues along the dramatic east coast boasting long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks, which contrast with fertile inland farmlands. Natural harbors mean picture-postcard fishing villages, and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful sweeping views with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. One of the visited settlements is Djupivogur, located in Berufjordur – a long and narrow fjord rich in birdlife. This charming fishing village had a long trading history dating back to the 16th century. Presently, the local harbor serves only fishermen, but you can still catch the spirit of this place while taking a short walk around the port buildings – including Langabud, an old trading station built in 1790.

During spring and summer (from April to October) , we also visit Studlagil Canyon – the hidden gem of Iceland. Turquoise waters originating in Vatnajokull glacier run between the biggest formation made of basalt columns in the country that you can admire once just a short walk from the parking lot.

This day ends at Egillsstadir – the capital of East Iceland.

Optional activities:

Blue Ice Cave visit – minimum age 8 (available from November to March) start your day with a super-jeep ride across the glacier to reach the natural phenomenon – Blue Ice Cave. This 3-hour-long expedition will leave you with many unforgettable memories. All the safety gear will be provided. Please make sure to wear warm clothing and solid hiking boots.

Amphibian Boat Tour at Jökulsárlón (available from May to September) take a 45-minute-long amphibian boat tour among floating icebergs. Remember to keep your head up for seals swimming in ice-cold waters or resting on the shore.

Vök Geothermal Floating Pools  – new geothermal SPA built on the beautiful Lake Urridavatn. Put your swimwear on, relax and enjoy the view over the untouched landscape. Pools are filled with warm waters streaming up from deeps under the lake.

  • DAY 3 – Lake Mývatn and Waterfalls

This part of Iceland is considered the most beautiful part of the country. Unfortunately, since located in the remote part of Iceland, not so many people have a chance to explore this area. Lake Mývatn is one of the wonders of Iceland. It is a unique natural environment created in a lava eruption 2300 years ago. Here you can find geothermal hot springs, caves with steaming blue waters, giant rock formations, unique bird life, and fauna. The most remarkable point is the magnificent Dettifoss , Europe’s most powerful waterfall. Before jumping back on the bus, we will take you on a short hike to admire another waterfall called Selfoss. On that day, we visit the area to the following places Hverir , Grjótagjá , Dimmuborgir , and Krafla power station. The last stop on this exciting route is Godafoss – the waterfall of Gods.

Mývatn Natural Geothermal SPA  – take a deep plunge into silky, blue waters, reach in minerals that will make your skin smooth and relaxed. Simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings of lake Mývatn – the fourth largest lake in the country.

  • DAY 4 – North Iceland – a region famous for rich wildlife

The fourth day starts from Akureyri – the capital of the North. This small, remote city is located in a stunning, deep fjord, next to the harbor, where modern architecture, historical wooden houses, and Akureyri church are located on the hill, serving as a viewing point at the same time. The day continues to the north coastline heading to Dalvík – a small fishing village. While driving through the North Coast, you will quickly realize how each region of Iceland differs from another – but still, each one can amaze you equally. In the North, we will be visiting the rock Hvítserkur which is a unique formation and a great place for photos, Seal Center in the small fishing village Hvammstangi where you will get information about these beautiful animals, and Kolugljufur Canyon with a spectacular waterfall (accessible only from April to October).

Whale Watching Boat Tour  – if spotting whales from a distance is not enough for you, you should secure your spot on this activity. The whale-watching tour takes around 3 hours , and the chances to see the huge mammals playing in the sea are very positive in this area of Iceland.

  • DAY 5 – Borgarfjörður and Lava-Themed Attractions

Today you will explore the Borgarfjordur area, where you will see the great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 m (almost 300 ft!) across the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which flows from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá River from ledges created by a less porous rock in the lava.

A stone’s throw upstream from Hraunfossar , there is another waterfall called Barnafoss . Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident that is said to have occurred here in the previous century. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall, and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterward, the grief-stricken mother had the bridge destroyed.

You will also stop at Grabrok Volcanic Craters – Stora (Big) Grabrok, Grabrokarfell, and Litla (Small) Grabrok, which formed approximately 3.400 years ago during a massive eruption shaping the landscape around. Solid, wooden stairs lead up to the top of Stora Grabrok, from where you can admire other colorful craters, lava fields, and lake Hredavatn. Finally, we take in the sights at Deildartunguhver , the highest-flow hot spring in Europe.

We stay overnight in the Borgarfjordur area.

Lava Caving  – visit a colorful Vidgelmir Lava Cave. Shy of 1600 meters, the cave features unique colors and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth. During this 1,5 hour long expedition, you will have a chance to see one of the largest lava caves in Iceland with its stunning lava stalactites and stalagmites. The area surrounding the entrance to the cave will allow you to realize how powerful volcano eruptions can be.

Krauma Geothermal SPA – Krauma natural geothermal baths & spa is located next to Deildartunguhver and powered by its waters. This brand new beautiful Spa offers five relaxing geothermal baths, a cold tub, two steam baths, and more, all in a very natural environment.

  • DAY 6 – Black beaches, rough lava fields, and the magic of Snæfellsjokull National park

Today you’ll view Snæfellsjökull volcano , wearing a magnificent crown of ice, the highest peak in this area of Iceland, and is often visible on clear days from Reykjavik. It is this place that Jules Verne chose as the entrance to the earth’s core in Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne.

Ytri-Tunga is a charming farm with a nearby beach and a famous seal colony. Animal lovers will enjoy seeing their cute faces as they sunbathe and play in the surf.

Arnarstapi and Hellnar are in a lovely coastal area with a natural harbor. Beautiful rock formations decorate the coastline, spotted with green-and-yellow moss, and you can stroll along the cliffs here to take in the refreshing sea air.

Look for Lóndrangar , two black basalt columns marking the coast, so tall they can be seen from the road! Djúpalónssandur is another gorgeous black beach, where the air is filled with the sounds of birds circling the cliffs and the ocean waves hitting the sand. At Djúpalónssandur, you’ll find a curiosity on the beach: four large, smooth stones. They are “lifting stones” used to measure the strength of fishermen who once worked and lived all along the coasts.

At the famous Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum, you’ll see treasures and tools collected during a lifetime at sea. There may even be fresh hákarl (the famous “rotten shark”) to try, dried in a shed behind the museum several times per year, along with a taste of Icelandic cumin schnapps to wash it down.

At your last stop, Kirkjufell mountain rises out of the green hills, surrounded by trickling rivers. This is one of the most popular photography spots in Iceland, so be sure to get a picture for your collection!

  • DAY 7 – The Golden Circle and Kerið volcanic crater

The Golden Circle is the most popular day tour in Iceland. Geysers, The Golden waterfall, and Thingvellir are classic destinations for any visitor to our island.

We want to add something unique to your experience, so we will also visit the giant volcanic crater Kerid . The crater is 270 m wide and more than 55 m deep. A lake at the bottom of the crater gives it a little magic. The lake is almost 14 m deep.

Thingvellir National park is the National shire of all Icelanders. It lies within the belt of volcanic activity and fissures which pass across Iceland, a part of the mid-Atlantic ridge, the junction of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This all-encompassing six-day tour takes you to every region in Iceland on the  Ring Road  and deep into the heart of West Iceland, too, starting with an adventure on the South Coast with its stunning waterfalls and black sand beaches, plus an option to hike your way across a glacier.

The second day takes us to the glittering  iceberg lagoon at Jokulsarlon , where you will have the chance to take a boat trip around the icebergs or go ice-caving beneath the glacier. From there, we will whisk you through the peaceful landscapes of the  Eastfjords  with stops at Vestrahorn, the old fishing of Djupivogur, and, in summer, the breathtaking Studlagil Canyon before an overnight stay in Egilsstadir.

The third day brings us to  Myvatn,  an area well-known for active geothermal hotspots and magical places such as Grjotagja and Dimmuborgir, with an opportunity to soak the day away in the Green Lagoon. You’ll also see the  majestic waterfalls of Dettifoss, Selfoss and Godafoss .

The fourth day starts from Akureyri where your optional whale watching boat tour sails from. A short detour away from the Ring Road will later bring us to the Vatnes peninsula, where the dragon-shaped sea stack Hvitserkur  and the beautiful  Kolugljufur canyon  will be seen.

The fifth day will see us in  West Iceland taking in the weird and wonderful lava field waterfalls of Hraunfossar, the piping hot springs of Deildartunguhver and inside the biggest lava cave in Iceland.

On the final day of this special six-day tour,  you’ll have the choice of a circuit of the Golden Circle, or a day exploring the Snaefellsnes peninsula. The maximum size of the group on this tour is 19, offering you a pleasant and carefree way to discover the country. Your night-time accommodation is included, so all you have to do is sit back and relish the experience. We’ll also give you all you need to know about the optional experiences that you can enjoy on the journey, including glacier hikes, whale watching, visits to an ice cave, lagoon boat tours, and soothing spa experiences.

Day 1 | The South Coast of Iceland

For the first stage of this six-day journey, you will be transported from Reykjavik to the South Coast over a highland pass across a lava plateau dotted with superheated steam vents rising into the air.

Splendid views of the wide coastal plain can be seen as we sweep downhill past the geothermal greenhouses of Hveragerdi along the way, heading towards some of the most beautiful sights the country has to offer.

As we progress along the Ring Road, the land rises again up into enormous mountains and glaciers on the right, with the Atlantic coast on the left. Soon, the world-famous volcano Eyjafjallajokull starts to appear in the distance. This is our first stop, where you will see the splendid waterfall of Seljalandsfoss as it cascades 60 meters down into a blue-green river.

We’ll also take you to the “Hidden Waterfall” of Gljufrabui, just a few minutes away but rarely seen by most Ring Road travelers, as it is concealed behind a secluded rockface.

This section of Route 1 can often be very windy indeed, and the smaller waterfalls might be blown aside or even back up into the air! A few minutes further along, you will soon see the superb Skogafoss waterfall, easily spotted even before we turn off the Ring Road. Glacial waters gracefully fall 60 meters into the Skoga river, where the eternal spray sparks uncounted rainbows on sunny days. You can also ascend a 500-step path to the top and see the views from there too. The next stop on the first day is the dramatic black sand beach at Reynisfjara, offering views of the superb stone sea arches of Dyrholaey in the distance, the fascinating basalt columns fastened to the cliff-face and the other-worldly Reynisdrangar, the volcanic rock towers that lurk just offshore.

Powerful Atlantic waves storm ashore here, crashing their way up the beach and often catching out the unwary with their speed – take care when walking along the volcanic sands here.

Optional Activity

Minimum age 8 – put the crampons on and enjoy the magnificent, raw views around you. Under care of an experienced, skilled and qualified glacier guide you will discover mind-blowing places, astonishing crevasses and unique ice formations. It is necessary to wear solid hiking shoes and highly recommend wearing warm, windproof jackets. That is basically all you need to bring – we provide the crampons and all necessary equipment to walk safely on glacier. This activity takes approximately 3 hours.

OVERNIGHT STAY ON THE COUNTRYSIDE

You will stay in a cozy country hotel located just few kilometres away from the Glacier Lagoon

Day 2 | Adventure in the East

This day starts with visit at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon – world famous glacial lake filled with floating ice bergs falling from the biggest glacier in Europe – Vatnajökull. Some of them are being washed back ashore and dazzling in contrast to the black sand beach called Diamond Beach – nearly as famous as the lagoon itself. This area is also known for reach wildlife, including grey and harbour seals swimming in ice-cold waters or resting on the shore.

Then it is on to mountain Vestrahorn (which is one of the best spots for photos in Iceland) and continue along the dramatic east coast boasts long, narrow fjords with steep sides and jagged peaks which contrast with inland fertile farmlands. Natural harbors mean picture-postcard fishing villages and seemingly never-ending roads cross the region, providing beautiful sweeping views with steep mountains towering just behind the houses. One of the visited settlements is Djupivogur, located in Berufjordur – long and narrow fjord rich in birdlife. This charming fishing village had a long trading history dating back to 16th century. In present days, local harbour serves only fishermen, but you can still catch the spirit of this place while talking a short walk around the port buildings – including Langabud, old trading station build in 1790.

Optional Activities

Take a thrilling 45-minute amphibious boat tour among the floating icebergs. It’s your chance to get up close to these glittering giants as the bergs sway around the lagoon.

You’ll jump on an open-top 4WD vehicle and slide into the glacial waters for a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with these magical mountains of ice. Wrap up warm and look out for seals!

OVERNIGHT STAY IN EGILSSTAÐIR

The Capital of East Iceland

Day 3 | Lake Myvatn and Waterfalls

The third day sees the tour turn north through moon-like landscapes and into the beautiful lake region of Myvatn, famous for its fascinating lava formations, flat-topped mountains, and a wealth of flora and fauna.

We start the day by giving a visit at Studlagil Canyon – the hidden gem of Iceland. Turquoise waters originating in Vatnajokull glacier run between the biggest formation made of basalt columns in the whole country, that you can admire once taking just a short walk from the parking lot.

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, nearly 50 meters high and a hundred meters wide, producing plumes of spray that are visible from some distance away. Before jumping back on the bus, we will take you on the short hike to admire another waterfall called Selfoss.

Myvatn is the fourth largest lake in the country, lying across the Mid Atlantic Ridge with geothermal features bubbling away alongside dormant volcanoes.

For Game of Thrones fans, the Grjotagja geothermal cave will be a highlight. In contrast, the dramatic lava fields of Dimmuborgir, with its easy walks, will intrigue others. Nearby is Hverir, a geological marvel where you can walk numerous paths between sulfurous and colorful hot-pots.

Glorious Godafoss is not the biggest waterfall in the country, but it is very significant as the place where pagan symbols were forever discarded, thrown into the Skjalfandafljot river when Iceland became a Christian nation.

This region provides visitors with splendid views and ever-changing landscapes, from green fjordside pasturelands to dark, brooding lava fields, bright blue lakes and rivers, snow-capped peaks, and boiling mud pots.

The spa’s serene setting amidst birch and pine trees makes it truly exceptional.

The Forest Lagoon boasts two pools, with the large pool spanning 530m2 and maintained at a soothing temperature of around 37°C (98.6F), dry sauna & cold pool.

OVERNIGHT STAY IN AKUREYRI

The Capital of North Iceland

Day 4 | North Iceland – region famous for reach wildlife

Last day starts from Akureyri – the capital of the North. This small, remote city is located in a stunning, deep fjord. The city center is located next to the harbor, where one will find both modern architecture, historical wooden houses and Akureyri church located on the hill serving as a viewing point at the same time. The day continues by going South towards Varmahlid village, where charming turf church is located. While driving through the North Coast you will easily realize how each region of Iceland differs from another – but still each one can amaze you equally. In the North we will be visiting the rock Hvítserkur which is a unique formation and a great place for photos,  and Kolugljufur Canyon with spectacular waterfall.

If spotting whales from the distance is not enough for you then you should secure your spot on this activity.

The whale watching tour takes around 3 hours and the chances to see the huge mammals playing in the sea are very positive in this area of Iceland.

  • From: kr. 12.990,0

OVERNIGHT STAY IN BORGARNES

The Capital of West Iceland

Day 5 | The Silver Circle with Lava Caving

Today you will explore the Borgarfjordur (Silver Circle) area where you will see the most powerful hot spring in Europe – Deildartunguhver, charming Glanni Waterfall and great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 m (almost 300 ft!) across the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which flows from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá River from ledges created by less porous rock in the lava.

Literally a stone’s throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in a previous century. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall, and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-stricken mother had the bridge destroyed.

The highlight of the day is a visit to the Lava Cave at Viðgelmir  – just shy of 1600 meters the cave features amazing colors and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth. During this 1,5 hour long expedition you will have a chance to see one of the largest lava caves in Iceland with its stunning lava stalactites and stalagmites. The area surrounding the entrance to the cave will allow you to realize how powerful eruptions of volcano can be.

You will also stop at Husafell – magical place to unwind after a day of wonder, with birch tree woodlands, waterfalls, rugged lava fields, crystal-clear water springs, medieval remains and much more to see.

Day 6 | Snæfellsnes National Park

The final day of this epic tour of Iceland brings us to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Often described as “Iceland in Miniature”, you’ll discover golden beaches, crunchy lava fields, stunning waterfalls, and magical mountains.

The name translates as “Snow Mountain Peninsula”, and the enormous stratovolcano Snæfellsjökull dominates the sky wherever you look.

As we make our way around the peninsula, you’ll visit Kirkjufell, one of the most photographed peaks in the country, featured in “Game of Thrones”. The name means “Church Mountain”, and its triangular shape will amaze you!

The peninsula is unusual for its golden sand beaches, like Djupalonssandur. You’ll find some traditional “lifting stones”, which were used to test the strength of the local fishermen! Nearby stand the towering twin basalt cliff pinnacles at Lóndrangar, where thousands of seabirds make their homes in the summer. There’s a seal colony at Ytri-Tunga, and we’ll make a stop to see these cute creatures if the weather conditions are favourable. Then it’s a short drive back to the capital, so you can sit back and enjoy the magical memories you’ve made on the best road trip in the world!

You can also find answers to FAQ below

When you complete your booking, you’ll be asked to choose a pick up and drop off location. Where possible, we will collect you directly from your hotel .

Some parts of the city have traffic restrictions, so you’ll need to go to a designated bus stop for collection instead if your hotel is in that area.

This link will tell you which bus stop is closest to your accommodation.

There’s a 30-minute window for collection while we pick up other passengers from their locations.

At the end of your tour, you’ll be dropped off at the same place unless you choose to get off at another stop instead – that’s your choice! Drop off can also take up to 30 minutes.

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so you’ll need to prepare appropriately, whatever the time of year for your tour.

That means choosing the right clothes (light layers), shoes (sturdy and waterproof) and coats (windproof & waterproof). And not wearing jeans, just in case it rains!

We’ve prepared a detailed guide for you to read, full of tips and tricks to help you know what to wear, what to bring and what to leave behind!

If you’re booking a multi-day tour of up to three days, the maximum “carry-on” bag size is 22 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm or 22 x 18 x 10 inches)

If your multi-day tour is longer than three days, then your ticket includes “carry-on” (see above) and 24 inch “checked” baggage sized no bigger than 60 x 41 x 23 cm (24 x 16.4 x 9.2 inches)

For shorter tours, you can choose to add “checked” baggage for an additional fee during the booking process.

If you want to guarantee bringing a larger bag on a shorter tour, it is best to book in advance. Oversized luggages can not be taken on board but need to be stored prior the tour at either our office or at one of the public luggage lockers dotted across Reykjavík ( CHECK LOCATIONS & PRICES ).

If you wish to store your luggage at our office please contact us by email at [email protected]

At Nicetravel, we choose our overnight accommodations with care to make the best use of your time in Iceland, with reasonable drive times between stops.

You’ll enjoy a private room with en suite bathroom facilities and breakfast, WiFi, towels and, in most cases, a kettle for a morning brew.

Outside the capital, most Icelandic hotels are comfortable and unfussy, with friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff.

Enjoy the scenery while relaxing at the end of each day!

Hotel rooms are sold based on two adults sharing, so single-room occupancy is more expensive as a result.

If you are a solo traveler, we will not assign you a room with a stranger, so the single supplement fee becomes applicable.

If you are two people traveling together and staying in the same room but paying separately, the single supplement fee is not applicable.

Simply add the name of your travel companion in the “special requirements” section when completing your booking.

For couples or groups traveling together, rooms will be assigned according to the number of people who have booked together.

Depending on availability at each location, you may request twin beds if that is your preference.

Larger groups will be accommodated in combinations of triple, double and twin rooms – three people in a triple room, four people in two doubles or twin rooms, five people in one triple and one double, and so on.

If a person in your group would prefer a single room, you must select “single supplement fee” for them when booking.

Solo travelers must pay a single supplement fee in all instances.

Breakfast is included at each overnight location, featuring bread and butter, preserves, boiled eggs, cooked meats, fruits, yoghurts, tea, and coffee.

All other meals are at your own expense.

As the tour continues around the country, you can grab lunch and dinner at each of the scheduled stops, and we’ll offer recommendations if you want them!

Yes. We monitor the weather and road conditions on the tour route to maximize your chance to see Iceland’s attractions at their best.

That means we may change the order or timing of the stops to take advantage of the weather (avoiding rain or snow showers where possible) and “ golden hour” photo opportunities .

If we receive a weather alert from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or roads are closed by the local authorities, we must cancel tours for your safety.

Iceland’s weather is very changeable, meaning changes may occur quickly. If we have to cancel tours, we will send you an email notification immediately .

So please check your email inbox before heading out to the collection point, particularly if the weather looks bad in the city.

Sometimes the weather is worse outside the city, or vice versa!

On average, we will cover 200-300 kilometers each day, with four to five hours of driving.

We schedule our tours as evenly as possible, with driving distances between each stop varying from 45 minutes to a couple of hours.

You’ll have around 30 to 60 minutes to explore each location, with most attractions just a short walk from the parking lot.

As with everything in Iceland, the precise timings of the tour will depend on weather and road conditions on the day, as our priority is to keep you safe while exploring Iceland.

If you want to bring small children on our tours, we will provide booster seats to ensure their safety and comfort.

Important: bringing children younger than the minimum age stated for each trip is not permitted; please check carefully before submitting your booking.

Please contact us by email ( [email protected] ) at least 12 hours in advance, with the subject line “Booster seat + your booking reference number”.

After the final stop on the tour, we will return to the city. There is no specific time or drop off location – this can differ from the pick up spot.

You’re free to ask the guide to drop you off in the city center, or back at your collection point, whichever is the most convenient for your evening plans.

You can expect to be dropped off within 30 minutes after the scheduled end of the tour.

All our scheduled group tours are guided in English. Though it is possible to book a private tour guided in other languages. We will try to accommodate your request the best we can!

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss. But there are more stunning canyons in Iceland, like Vatnsjfjörður, Kólugljúfur or Þingvellir just to name a few.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Eiriksstadir is a reconstructed Viking-era longhouse in Iceland, which provides a glimpse into the architectural style of the early settlers. Hlíðartúnshúsin (located in Borgarnes) is a collection of several turf houses that were first built more than a hundred years ago. You’ll see a sheep barn, a cowshed, and even a hut used to store potatoes!

Iceland is also famous for turf-roofed churches, such as the iconic Viðimýrarkirkja and Hofskirkja, showcasing the continuation of this architectural tradition into religious buildings.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Once a little 17 th -century fishing village and trading station, Akureyri is now a bustling town. You’ll find funky cafés, restaurants, art galleries, design stores and a botanical garden to explore.

Even though it’s very close to the Arctic Circle, the 20,000 people who call Akureyri their home enjoy some of the country’s warmest and most stable weather.

As you walk the streets of Akureyri, make sure you take a look at the traffic lights. All the red lights are heart-shaped!

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many ! To reach Gljúfrabúi, you´ll need to walk through a narrow opening in the rock and wade through ankle-deep water in a small canyon. Inside, you will be greeted by a magnificent waterfall cascading down from a steep cliff. Remember to wear solid shoes and take your raincoat with!

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

Diamond Beach, also known as Jökulsárlón Beach, is a mesmerizing natural wonder located in Iceland. It is situated near the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where icebergs from the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier float into the Atlantic Ocean.

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. It is known for its stunning coastal scenery, with cliffs, gorges, and rock formations.

The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

It’s one of the busiest towns in West Iceland, a focal point for fishing, culture and commerce for a thousand years. But you can still feel its Viking roots wherever you look!

You’ll discover that it has a cheerful small-town vibe that makes it a delight to explore. So take a walk around its pretty streets and rocky shoreline, and enjoy the stunning views across the fjord to Hafnarfjall!

We usually arrive there around 5-6 pm, crossing the fjord over the second-longest bridge in Iceland, with stunning views to enjoy on both sides of the waters.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

The town is surrounded by moss-covered lava fields and towering volcanic mountains. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, so there are frequent earthquakes. That means new hot springs are constantly opening up in this highly active area, even in people’s homes and gardens!

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Some even use geothermal power for carbon-neutral cooking! Make sure you try the tomato soup while you’re here!

We usually arrive there around 4 pm – which gives you plenty of time to enjoy this charming town.

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

The Westfjords are one of Iceland’s oldest regions, and coming here is like taking a step back in time. A spectacular series of stunning fjords cut through dramatic peninsulas dotted with pretty fishing villages, thundering waterfalls, towering cliffs, and colorful beaches, reached by winding mountain roads. Few people live here, so it’s one of the most peaceful and relaxing regions Iceland has to offer. Look out for seals, puffins, and Arctic foxes – there are more of them than people! Take the Westfjords Way with us – a road trip you’ll never forget!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Þingvellir National Park

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours.

South Coast

See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast

Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

Iceland Ringroad

Traveling on iceland’s ring road by bus.

Not every road trip has to be done by car. For those who prefer to be driven rather than to drive themselves, buses are a wonderful option in Iceland. There are well-developed bus lines along the Ring Road as well as in larger cities.

Can I travel Iceland’s Ring Road by bus?

Yes, you can. However, there are a few things to consider. Buses do not run in a 5-minute interval, so it’s important to check the schedule ahead of time. In addition, bus services in Iceland operate on both summer and winter schedules. During the winter, connections are severely limited.

Most bus companies divide the Ring Road into four parts: West (Reykjavík and surroundings), North (Akureyri, Hsavik & Myvatn), East (The fjords, Höfn and surroundings) and South (Vík, Jökulsarlon). Each route is usually served at least once a day, but buses may be cancelled in bad weather. During the summer, there are often 2 or 3 buses a day.

How much does it cost to take the bus in Iceland and how do you pay?

The cost of the round trip depends on how far you want to travel and which company you use. For example, IcelandByBus offers an all-inclusive ticket for 33,000ISK (230€), which allows you to circumnavigate the entire island in one direction. Alternatively, they also offer a West and East ticket, which allows you to travel the corresponding half-circle. These tickets cost 20,000ISK (135€) and 39,500ISK (270€), respectively. There is also a Highland Pass that takes you to the highlands for 12,500ISK (85€).

Reykjavik Excursions currently offers seven different passes:

  • Hiking on your own – 12,500ISK (85€)
  • Circle – 42,000ISK (280€)
  • Combo – 58,000ISK (390€)
  • Beautiful South – 24,500ISK (165€)
  • Beautiful South Circle – 22,000ISK (150€)
  • Highlights – 46,500ISK (310€)
  • Highlands – 44,000ISK (295€)

In addition, you can also book and customize individual sections here. For example, the route from Reykjavik to Vik costs 7500ISK (50€). Here you can find all the tours that Reykjavik Excursions offers.

Another option is the buses from Straeto. These buses offer inner-city bus rides in Reykjavik, but also rides across the island. You can find a very detailed price list here. A trip from Reykjavik to Akureyri, for example, costs just under 60€ and a trip to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is about 68€. The buses stop at many popular destinations, but as far as I know, a complete circumnavigation of the island is not possible with Straeto as there is no connection between the northeast and southeast!

All companies offer payment by credit card. However, it is still advisable to book ahead, ideally through the website of the respective provider. With Straeto buses, it is quite common to get on and off dynamically. With Sterna and RE, the tours are often planned in advance, and those who want to ride along on a whim may be out of luck.

What else do I need to consider when taking the bus in Iceland?

Not much, but there are 1-2 peculiarities to keep in mind. For one thing, when taking inner-city rides, always position yourself at the bus stop where the driver can see you. Especially when it’s raining or snowing, tourists like to hide in the shelters, and the bus just drives by them. It always helps to look out or otherwise make yourself noticeable. Most bus drivers are pretty good at spotting passengers at bus stops.

Furthermore, as a hiker in Iceland, you can flag down a passing bus to stop. So, if you’re not keen on sticking strictly to the schedule and are feeling adventurous, you can hope to catch a passing bus along a particular route. You can pay directly to the driver, and off you go.

Similarly, in Iceland, you can ask the bus drivers to drop you off at a spot that isn’t an official stop. If you ask nicely, the driver will be happy to drop you off at any spot of your choice. However, you should be a little cautious, as often there won’t be another bus for the next 24 hours, so be prepared for an overnight stay. If you’re traveling with a tent and sleeping bag, you have the freedom to choose, but if you’re reliant on a hotel, you should check the area beforehand and possibly book a room.

Summer and Winter schedules for buses in Iceland

During the winter, buses operate on a significantly reduced schedule, so it’s essential to check ahead of time whether your intended travel route is feasible during the specific season. The highland roads are also closed to buses in winter, so highland tours are not offered. It’s best to check with your chosen provider in advance and generally pay attention to weather conditions . You can check the current weather, weather warnings, and forecasts for Iceland at any time here.

Buses in Reykjavik and Akureyri

For a city trip, you don’t need a rental car or bus. If you want to experience the city, you should explore it on foot, which is easy to do in all the cities in Iceland.

However, if you want to travel to the suburbs or have booked a hotel far, far away, you’ll be glad not to have to walk the transit routes every time and can instead use the inner-city buses. Straeto offers these buses, and the yellow buses are easy to recognize. A ride costs 400 kroner, which is just under 3€, and you can ride in one direction as long as you like. The buses operate in 15 or 30-minute intervals, and the fare must be paid in cash. Only the buses that go to the countryside have a card reader for credit cards. The main terminal in Reykjavik is called Hlemmur and is located in Reykjavik’s city center.

If you’re in Akureyri, you can even enjoy a free inner-city bus. You can view the timetable and stops on this page . The buses operate from 6 am to 11 pm on weekdays and from 12 pm to 6 pm on weekends and holidays.

Experience reports on bus travel in Iceland

I have only taken the city buses in Reykjavik a few times and otherwise have always traveled on the island with a rental car. I never had any problems and always found the rides pleasant. The rides to or from the airport were also always good.

Many friends and acquaintances have taken trips with Reykjavik Excursions, and the feedback has always been very positive. The buses were always punctual, clean, and in perfect technical condition. Some loyal Iceland travelers also told me that despite their vast experience, they often prefer to switch to the bus instead of renting a car because the drivers know their way around better, and you arrive more relaxed. So, if you’re planning to go to the highlands, consider whether a day trip might be an option.

Experience the Land of Fire and Ice on This 7 Day Iceland Itinerary

The writer was hosted.

Get ready for an exciting adventure through the land of fire and ice with a carefully crafted 7-day Iceland itinerary along the famous Ring Road. From the dramatic landscapes of the Golden Circle to the enchanting waterfalls of the South Coast, this itinerary offers a blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences. Prepare to immerse yourself in the surreal beauty of Iceland as you explore volcanic lava fields, soak in the Blue Lagoon and witness the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights in the night sky.

Day 1: You’ve Arrived in Iceland!

After landing at Keflavik Airport, grabbing your bags and picking up your rental car, you’re ready to start your Iceland adventure. But, of course, you’ve likely just spent the night on the airplane and a bit of refreshing is required. Fortunately, Iceland’s famed hot springs, The Blue Lagoon, is just a 22 minute drive away. Make your reservations before you arrive and head straight to The Blue Lagoon for a dip in this geothermal hot spring because no trip to Iceland is complete without this experience.

Once refreshed, a driving time of 40 minutes brings you to Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city. If a self drive road trip isn’t part of your itinerary, bus service is available from Keflavik Airport to the Blue Lagoon and on to Reykjavik.

A guided tour by locals is an excellent way to spend your first day in Reykjavik as an introduction to the capital city and Iceland in general. We chose the free tours by locals , a company with knowledgeable and entertaining local guides that lead walking tours of  downtown Reykjavik. The “tip what you think the tour was worth” concept is unique and the tour focuses on highlights like the stunning Hallgrímskirkja church, historic buildings and the city’s colorful neighborhoods. The guided tours introduce visitors to the stories of one of Europe’s most unique countries.

Whale watching tours provide another interesting experience in Reykjavik. Departing from Reykjavik Harbor, the tours not only search for whales but also keep an eye out for puffins and other migratory birds that visit Iceland seasonally.

Day 2: Drive the Golden Circle

Depart Reykjavik on Day Two of your self drive road trip to experience the natural wonders of the Golden Circle. The first stop, Thingvellir National Park harbors history and the marvels of nature within its boundaries. The park sits in a rift valley where the tectonic plates of North America and Europe meet.

Another must-see along the Golden Circle, the geyser geothermal area houses several geysers including Strokkur – Iceland’s most visited active geyser. Walk alongside the geysers and feel the steam as it erupts. Or stretch your legs on the hiking trail for a view overlooking the geothermal area.

Another must-see, Gullfoss Waterfall  – which translates as Golden Falls – is one of Iceland’s most beloved waterfalls. Gullfoss is fed by the waters of Hvítá River that travel from the glacier Langjökull, before cascading 105 feet down the Gullfoss Waterfall’s two dramatic stages.

Continue Along the Ring Road

Next up on the Golden Circle, a stop at South Iceland’s Kerid Crater  seems almost otherworldly. This volcanic lake with deep blue-green water surrounded by red rock and lush mossy vegetation formed over 6500 years ago after an eruption. Allow yourself enough time to explore the hiking trails the circle the rim of Kerid Crater. Or venture down the hiking trails to the waters of the Kerid Crater for another perspective.

Continue east along the Ring Road on a two-hour drive to Vik. Of course those two hours may become three with all the sightseeing possibilities along the south coast of Iceland. Highlights include the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach and the Fjadrargljufur Canyon.

Overnight near Skaftafell nature reserve and get ready for the next day’s big adventures.

Day 3: Experience Black Sand Beaches and an Ice Cave Tour

Day Three unveils a full day of adventure. Start with a walk along one of Iceland’s most striking black sand beaches. Framed by dramatic basalt columns, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is a must-see. As you make your way along your Ring Road itinerary to Vik, take the turn off to Dyrhólaey to view the spectacular arch in the sea. During nesting season it’s possible to spot puffins and other bird life here. A 19 minute drive east from here leads to the lovely village of Vik.

For an experience off the typical tourist track, book an Ice Cave Tour with Southcoast Adventure . The experience begins with a pick up location in central Vik and a drive through ancient lava fields. You’ll then strap on some crampons for a short glacier hike on the mighty Myrdalsjokull glacier and into the ice cave. Plentiful shops, restaurants and lodging options make Vik an ideal place to overnight before continuing on your Ring Road itinerary.

Day 4: Waterfalls, a Glacier Lagoon and Europe’s Largest Glacier

As you continue east on the Ring Road, a drive time of under two hours brings you to Svartifoss waterfall – another gorgeous must-see waterfall framed by black basalt columns. Continue east to reach the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon where massive icebergs can be seen floating in the lagoon. For an up close view of the floating icebergs, consider taking a glacier lagoon boat tour. Be sure to allow enough time to see nearby Diamond Beach as you follow the road to the breathtaking east fjords. Overnight in a hotel or guesthouse in Höfn and rest up for the next day. From Höfn you’ll have a clear view of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull.

Day 5: Driving and Sightseeing on the Ring Road

Today you’ll continue your Ring Road itinerary driving north to Lake Myvatn. Detour onto Iceland Road 864 for an additional drive time of about an hour to capture spectacular photos of the Dettifoss waterfall.

When you reach Lake Myvatn, more geothermal areas await exploration at Hverir and Kfafla. A must-see, Godafoss waterfall, located in the river Skjálfandafljót in north Iceland, falls from a height of 39 feet and has a width spanning 98 feet. Hiking trails provide an ideal way to see more of this region considered part of the Diamond Circle for sightseeing.

Continue traveling on Ring Road another 45 miles to overnight in Akureyri, the largest city outside of the greater Reykjavik area. Akureyri is a renowned cultural center with many galleries and museums. It’s also home to the world’s northernmost botanical gardens.

Day 6: Travel the Iceland Ring Road to Snaefellsnes Peninsula

Driving in Iceland is an adventure in itself and today’s 230-mile drive from Akureyri to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula proves my point. Drive time typically runs about 4 hours and 30 minutes without stops. But the jaw-dropping vistas along the way beckon you to stop and take photos. A couple of not to be missed sights along the way are Hvítserkur and Kolugljúfur Canyon.

Visible from the impressive black sand beach at Húnaflói Bay, Hvítserkur is a distinctive rock formation often referred to as the Troll of Northwest Iceland. The 49 ft tall basalt sea stack features two unusual holes at its base and creates a silhouette often likened to a dragon drinking from the sea.

A short detour off of Ring Road, the breathtaking Kolugljúfur Canyon and Kolufossar waterfalls make an ideal stop to stretch your legs and take in these beautiful wonders of nature. It’s a short walk from the parking lot to the canyon which is accessed by a footbridge.

As you continue to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, you’ll leave the Ring Road behind to take route 54 at Borgarnes. Overnight nearby to rest up for a full day of adventure on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

Day 7: Exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula

While day tours are available from Reykjavik, Snaefellsnes Peninsula deserves a nearby overnight stay to allow a full day to explore this gorgeous peninsula. Home to Kirkjufell – the country’s most photographed mountain – the landscapes leave you breathless. Just steps from Kirkjufell the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls add to the serenity of this place.

A counter-clockwise drive along the Snaefellsnes Peninsula leads you through picturesque fishing villages, miles of lava fields, a volcanic crater and new discoveries at every turn. The peninsula is home to Snaefellsjokull National Park – a park filled with all the geological wonders Iceland offers along with intriguing human history. You’ll find black sand beaches, picturesque churches, soaring cliffs, volcanic craters and miles of lava fields.

When your explorations conclude, an hour’s drive time along Iceland’s west coast leads you back to Reykjavik.

Best Time to Visit Iceland

Deciding when to visit Iceland presents a few choices. If your focus is chasing the Northern Lights, visiting in the aurora season that runs from October until April gives you the best chance. Of course, mid-winter guarantees dark skies for hours, increasing opportunities to view the elusive Northern Lights. But, the downside to a winter visit is limited daylight. So if you want to cover as much of Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes in seven days, you may need a season with more light.

Also, for those hoping to self drive on a road trip along the entire Ring Road, winter often means unsafe road conditions due to heavy snow and ice in some areas. For a winter visit, consider guided day trips from areas along the south coast of Iceland.

In summer months, the Northern Lights aren’t visible. But, the midnight sun extends your day giving you more time to explore each destination you visit. If there’s a downside to spending the mild summer months (mosquito free by the way) in Iceland, it’s the crowds. You know that Golden Circle you want to see? Everyone else wants to see it too. That means bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Personally, I prefer the shoulder season. And on our recent visit to Iceland, we arrived in mid-April for a week exploring this magnificent country minus the crowds. It’s early for bird and whale watching, but not impossible to catch a glimpse of some of the early arriving puffins and whales on a boat tour. Lingering Northern Lights are also possible on a clear night in April. Autumn presents another viable option for a crowd-free Iceland road trip.

What to Know Before You Go

Most travelers who visit Iceland arrive at Keflavik Airport. Located 50 kilometers outside the capital city of Reykjavik, Keflavik Airport is a relatively small airport compared to some of our mega-sized airports in the US. It’s also easy to navigate and rental car counters are located inside the airport.

Unless you plan to use a tour company for guided day trips, a rental car is the best way to really explore this magnificent place. Always up for a self drive road trip, we reserved a rental car in advance of our arrival. Small vehicles make the most sense on the narrow-ish roads throughout Iceland, but if you’re venturing outside Reykjavik in search of secret lagoons, lava fields and black sand beaches, it’s best to rent a small SUV with 4-wheel drive. Some roads are unpaved and road conditions are unpredictable so that extra power comes in handy.

Although I don’t typically use the extra insurance offered for rental cars, Iceland’s extreme wind and unpredictable weather warranted the need for rental car insurance just for peace of mind.

Camper vans provide another option for intrepid travelers up for a rugged adventure. Campgrounds throughout Iceland  offer various types of hook-ups and facilities.

Packing for Iceland

Your packing needs for Iceland vary greatly depending on whether you visit in the winter or summer months or the shoulder season I chose. One thing remains the same – you need layers! You also need a waterproof rain jacket. And, of course, pack a swimsuit for soaking in the country’s hot springs. You’ll find more information to aid in planning your packing list here .

Aurora Tourism in Iceland: You Can Seek, but You May Not Find

The country markets itself as a destination to see the northern lights — especially this year, which is a peak time for solar activity. But they can be elusive, as one writer recently found.

Amelia Nierenberg spent four nights searching for the northern lights in Iceland.

  • March 25, 2024

From the outside, it may seem like the northern lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travelers gaze at the green bands above them . The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.”

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are northern lights big bus tours and northern lights minibus tours and northern lights Super Jeep tours . There are private guides and boat cruises . There’s an observatory base camp . There’s even a museum .

Tourists line up outside a red minibus in the twilight. Behind them, there is a light green statue that is illuminated.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” said Björn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at Iceland’s meteorological office , chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

This year, the letdowns are especially intense.

The northern lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles toward Earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity , which some assume means that the displays could peak, too.

But the enhanced solar activity doesn’t necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual: In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona , Missouri and southern England .

That doesn’t mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they aren’t. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

But nothing special, with the northern lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming .

Last month, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high — this was the best year yet, right? But as I learned more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good” Inga Dís Richter, the chief commercial officer at Icelandia , a tourism agency, wrote in an email two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions , one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travelers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night , which includes space weather. (Some are not — Aurora Forecast , which costs $12.99 a year, sends alerts.) Many people also turn to Facebook pages , where enthusiasts hungrily swap sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the northern lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said John Mason, a global expert on the northern lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms. Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For $88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9:30 p.m.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I’d either see something astonishing with these strangers — the sky, banded with light — or shiver with them shoulder-to-shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasizing the word “hunting,” “similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there’s limited light pollution. Although the northern lights can appear over the city, it’s best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr. Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could only make out the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed toward Reykjavík. Were those the lights? (No. That was light pollution.)

Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it’s much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

Mr. Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr. Gunnarsson and other guides said. It’s rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Eric Larimer, the digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland , a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Rangá , which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming — low-slung and wooden — but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. (The Kardashians stayed there . So did the Real Housewives of Orange County .) A standard room costs more than $300, depending on the season.

But Rangá doesn’t just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Fridrik Pálsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the northern lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the northern lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the northern lights: They are usually only visible on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good northern lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Dr. Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights — great Wonka colors swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr. Pálsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights didn’t show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent — and, for city dwellers, also rare. The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy program.

He bent into a toddler-size telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on Earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Mr. Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way — they create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Rangá was a pioneer in Iceland’s northern lights tourism industry: About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr. Pálsson, the owner of Rangá, speaking of northern lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the northern lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Sveinn Birkir Björnsson, the marketing and communications director at Business Iceland , which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board . From April to August, there were about 1.1 million, too.

About a decade earlier , when tourism overall to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travelers are drawn by the lights — and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It’s also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes , but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows — Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity . In January, lava flowed into a small town and last week a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grótta Lighthouse , a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me off — many tourists go there because it’s darker than most of Reykjavík, but then don’t think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked, and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We didn’t see the lights. And I didn’t see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3:30 a.m., half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it’s a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that — darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern lights or no northern lights, it was still cosmically beautiful.

Day 2 – Meet your guide & explore the Golden Circle route

This morning, you’ll meet your guide before setting off on a tour of the iconic sights along Iceland’s Golden Circle route.

After a hearty buffet breakfast at your hotel, hit the road with your expert guide at the wheel. Throughout today’s journey, keep your eyes glued to the stunning scenery that flashes past the window.

Soon you’ll arrive in Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, the site of the world’s first parliament. Here, your guide will share the history of the area with you. What’s more, you can walk along the continental divide between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.

Then there’s the geothermal area at Geysir, another of the Golden Circle’s must-see attractions. Prepare to be amazed by the Strokkur geyser, the most active here. If you wait for just 5–10 minutes you’ll see it shoot super-heated water 20 meters (65 feet) into the air.

Round off the day with a visit to Gullfoss waterfall, or ‘Golden Falls’, your final stop on the Golden Circle. Stretch your legs on one of the trails surrounding these tiered falls. Don’t forget to take your camera – this cascade of water looks impressive from all angles.

Day 3 – Waterfalls, black sand beaches & volcanic Iceland

On today’s itinerary, you could see 3 of the things Iceland is best known for: spectacular waterfalls, adorable puffins, and volcanic formations.

Begin the day with a visit to 2 breathtaking waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. At Seljalandsfoss you can even walk behind the impressive plume of water.

Drive further along the south coast and you’ll come to Dyrhólaey headland, home to basalt columns, black sand beaches, and towering sea cliffs. Between May and mid-August, you’ll notice these cliffs are packed with nesting puffins.

Later, stop off in the picturesque village of Vík before you glimpse more evidence of the country’s volcanic heritage. This comes in the form of Eldhraun, the world’s largest recorded lava field in the last 10,000 years.

Day 4 – Vatnajökull National Park, boat tour on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon & Diamond Beach

You’ve seen some of the volcanism that puts the fire in the Land of Fire and Ice, but now it’s time for the ice. Today you’ll stand on the shores of a glacier lagoon, walk between icebergs on Diamond Beach, and see the country’s largest glacier.

This morning your guide will whisk you off to the biggest national park in Western Europe: Vatnajökull National Park. Here you’ll marvel at the glacier-topped peak of Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland’s highest, on your way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.

Not only will you have time to walk the shores of the lagoon, but you’ll also board a zodiac boat to get up close and personal with the ice. Imagine sailing around the lagoon, surrounded by jagged peaks as icebergs bob past.

Afterward, head to nearby Diamond Beach. An otherworldly scene awaits you. Think glittering shards of ice scattered across black volcanic sands with the ocean as your backdrop.

Day 5 – Landmannalaugar, lava fields & hot spring bathing

Venture into Iceland’s pristine interior to hike in multi-colored valleys and soothe your muscles in natural hot and cold springs.

The rugged roads of Iceland’s highlands await today. Your guide will expertly navigate these dirt tracks to bring you into the volcanic heart of the country. Here you’ll embark on a short hike where you can admire the striking many-hued rhyolite mountains.

In the afternoon, you can take part in a revitalizing Icelandic wellness ritual. This involves taking a dip in cold pools, before soaking in naturally warmed springs.

Day 6 – Journey between glaciers on the Sprengisandur route

Head further into the highlands as your guide navigates the Sprengisandur trail. Mind-blowing scenery is waiting for you!

Fueled up with a wholesome breakfast, it’s time to see even more of Iceland’s wild interior.

With your guide at the wheel, you can take in the scenery from your comfortable 4x4 vehicle. Relax and rely on your skillful guide to safely ford glacial rivers and drive the rugged terrain ahead.

Throughout the journey, enjoy gazing out at the view, which includes these beautiful glaciers: Hofsjökull and Vatnajökull. This region is known to have inspired many of Iceland’s ghost stories and folk tales. Why not ask your guide to share a few with you?

If Sprengisandur is closed due to road conditions, don’t worry! Your group will take the Kjölur route through the highlands instead.

Day 7 – Lake Mývatn & Dettifoss waterfall

Explore the northern reaches of Vatnajökull National Park and marvel at the wildlife and geological wonders that you’ll find around Lake Mývatn.

Once you reach Lake Mývatn, you’ll be blown away by your volcanic surroundings and the birdlife on the lake. Then visit the Hverir geothermal area where you can walk between boiling mud pits and see fields of cooling lava from the Krafla volcano.

You’ll also get to glimpse Dettifoss waterfall, one of the most powerful in Europe.

Before arriving in Húsavík, you’ll stop off at Ásbyrgi canyon to see its 100-meter (328-feet) tall walls. Here your guide will delight you with age-old legends. One of which says, the horseshoe shape of the valley was made by the hoof of Óðinn’s eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.

In the afternoon you'll visit the pretty fishing village of Húsavík to get a glimpse of local life before returning to your accommodation.

Day 8 – Askja caldera & Iceland’s volcanic interior

Today you’ll see volcanic craters, turquoise lakes, and the vast expanse of Vatnajökull National Park’s Ódáðahraun desert area.

Once more, your guide will lead you into Iceland’s rugged heart. The terrain here is so otherworldly that it was used as a training site for the moon landings by NASA in the 1960s.

From here, you’ll head for the huge Askja caldera, which formed during an eruption in the last ice age.

The caldera is home to 2 neighboring lakes: Víti and Askja. Although Lake Askja is the largest, the milky blue waters of Lake Viti make it just as striking, despite its small size. A hike to the crater’s edge will give you unrivaled views over the lakes.

Then round off your day with a visit to Drekagil, the ‘Dragon Valley’. Here you can wander between the strangely shaped lava formations and gaze up at the rocky pinnacles that gave the area its name.

Day 9 – Akureyri, Goðafoss waterfall & the ‘Troll Peninsula’

Journey along Iceland’s north coast and discover magical valleys, quaint villages, and Akureyri, the country’s second city.

This morning, you’ll begin your journey along the Arctic Coast Way. Sit back and enjoy views of the spectacular coastline dotted with picturesque villages. En route, you’ll stop off at Goðafoss (‘Waterfall of the Gods’), another of Iceland’s breathtaking falls.

Next, arrive in Akureyri, the capital of the North, where you’ll have time to explore. Have your camera at the ready as you meander along the charming streets, lined with colorful houses. You could head to the botanic gardens or tour the artist’s district.

Afterward, hit the road again on your way to Tröllaskagi (‘Troll Peninsula’). This striking region got its name from the rock formations that resemble frozen trolls. From here, continue onto Skagafjörður, the home of the Icelandic horse.

As well as being the traditional heart of this hardy horse breed, you’ll also find that Skagafjörður boasts many historical sites from the Viking-age sagas.

Day 10 – Arctic Coast Way & Erik the Red Museum

Continuing along the Arctic Coast Way, you’ll have plenty of time to marvel at epic sea cliffs before immersing yourself in Viking history.

Your guide will take the wheel once more, following the Arctic Coast Way, as it skirts the Arctic Circle.

Keep a lookout for seals hauled out on the beaches that line this stretch of coast. You’ll also pass Hvítserkur, a 15-meter (49-feet) tall arched rock formation that rises out of the sea.

In the afternoon, you’ll drive across Laxardalsheiði heath and the surrounding farmland. The region is known to be the home of Erik the Red and his son, Leifur Eiríksson, two of the most famous Viking explorers. Your guide will share Viking legends with you and you’ll be able to learn more by visiting the Erik the Red Museum.

Day 11 – Snæfellsjökull National Park, bird watching & coastal villages

Soak up the wild beauty of Snæfellsjökull National Park as your guide shows you the region’s top spots.

This beautiful corner of Iceland is home to a dormant volcano, topped by a dazzling glacier. It’s this glacier, Snæfellsjökull, that gives the park its name.

Your guide will also take you to Kirkufjell, perhaps the most photographed peak in the country. After time to capture this iconic mountain, you’ll head for Arnarstapi village where basalt sea stacks line the coast.

Before returning to Reykjavík, you may also have time for a short hike between the historic settlements of Arnarstapi and Hellnar.

Once you arrive in Reykjavík, your guide will say goodbye at your hotel. The rest of the evening is yours to spend as you like.

Day 12 – Goodbye Iceland

Shared airport transfer to Keflavík Airport for your return flight (included).

Now that your unforgettable trip to Iceland has come to an end, it’s time to say farewell and board the plane home.

Or, if you’d like more time to enjoy the buzz of city life, why not stay in Reykjavík for an extra night or two?

You’ll get to stay in accommodation around the country, and some tours include a few evening meals too. After a day’s exploring, you’ll go back to your private room and meet your guide and group the next morning to continue your trip.

All of our guided group tours start and finish in Reykjavík.

How big will the group be on the tour?

There are 2 group sizes available:

  • Small group: Up to 16 people
  • Big group: Up to 36 people

Small groups offer a more intimate travel experience, whereas big groups are more wallet-friendly.

What will the other people in my group be like?

You’ll likely be with people from a whole mix of backgrounds, from different countries and of different ages. Your guide will entertain you with fun facts and jokes as you journey around Iceland. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll be laughing along with your group!

There will most probably be a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups of friends and family.

Can I customize a guided group tour?

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.
