ESIM Product Comparison

Orange holiday europe esim.

Orange Holiday Europe eSim is an all-inclusive eSim plan that can fully replace a physical sim card. You get 20 GB of mobile data and a (French) phone number, so you can make calls and send/receive text messages without any roaming charges. It’s worth noting that I’ve not seen anything similar with any other eSim provider, so this is by far the best option if you need a monthly eSim plan for Greece that includes everything.

And don’t worry that it’s a French number; it’s still the European Union, so you can make calls, send texts, and use mobile data without any additional charges. The only catch is that you need to register your eSim within the first month if you don’t want it to get deactivated when the plan stops being valid.

This eSim will cost you around 39 Euros. It’s expensive, but worth it if you want an all-inclusive plan.

  • Includes a phone number
  • Generous data allowance
  • Regional coverage

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

Orange Holiday Zen eSim is an all-inclusive eSim plan, similar to the previous Orange Holiday Europe eSim plan. The Zen plan is valid for two weeks, as opposed to thirty days of the previous plan, and it includes a smaller data allowance. You get 8 GB of mobile data, and you only need to pay some 20 Euros for this plan.

You will also get a French phone number so you can make and receive calls, as well as send and receive text messages. The data plan even includes free phone minutes and 200 free texts to Europe and worldwide, and it’s genuinely one of the best two-week plans you can buy for Greece, especially if having a phone number is important to you.

  • Phone number included
  • Good value for money
  • Coverage in the entire EU

Holafly is the most popular eSim provider for travelers who need an unlimited data plan. All of their eSim options for Greece include unlimited data , and they differ in the duration of the plan. The most affordable plan is active for five days, while the most expensive plan gets you almost three months of unlimited data in Greece.

You don’t get a local phone number with the Holafly eSim, but that’s the case with most eSim providers. Also, one major downside of Holafly is that they don’t allow data sharing, meaning you’ll be able to access the Internet only on the device on which the eSim is active. This is an issue if you want to create a hotspot that your friends and family could use as well.

It’s worth noting that Holafly also offers regional eSim plans that are priced identically to individual-country plans. If you’re planning to visit more than one country in Europe, a regional Europe eSim plan is the best value for money.

  • Unlimited data
  • Easy top-ups
  • Lots of options
  • No data sharing

Nomad is another popular international eSim provider with some really good data plans for Greece . Their data plans are actually cheaper than Airalo, which doesn’t happen very often. Nomad’s eSim plans for Greece start at $4.5 for 1GB that’s valid for a week, and go up to $35 for 20 GB that you can use over a month.

The cheapest monthly data plan for Greece is $8.50 for 3 GB, which is the best deal for month-long Internet access. Also, it’s worth noting that you can always purchase additional data once you spend everything in the initial plan, so there’s no reason to overpay for data that you might not even use.

Nomad also has regional data plans that offer coverage in 25 or 35 European countries (both plans include Greece), but they’re more expensive than individual data plans for Greece. These plans are worth considering only if your travel plans include going outside of Greece.

  • Very affordable plans
  • Options for regional plans
  • Easy activation and top-ups
  • No phone number

Airalo offers eSim data plans in Greece starting from just $5. The cheapest plan from this eSim provider includes 1 GB of data that’s valid for an entire week, and it’s the perfect data plan for travelers who just want to have the safety net of internet access in case they need it.

The priciest plan from the same eSim provider is $49, and it includes 20 GB of data that is valid for an entire month. This is a pretty good deal for a longer stay in Greece, especially if you usually use a lot of data while you’re traveling. It’s important to note that Airalo has a bunch of other and cheaper plans that are valid for an entire month, so you can ensure you stay connected in Greece for 30 days for as low as $9.

Airalo also offers regional plans for Europe, but they are a bit more expensive than the individual country plans. They’re worth it, in case you are planning to visit other countries in Europe or the European Union, in addition to Greece.

  • Affordable data plans
  • Regional plans are available
  • More expensive than Nomad

Ubigi is a good option if you want a regional eSim plan that’s active in Europe or even worldwide. They don’t offer individual country plans, so their eSim packages are a little pricier compared to the likes of Airalo and Nomad.

On the other hand, Ubigi also has one of the cheapest eSim plans that’s active in Greece, and it’s perfect for travelers who are in the country for only a little while. The plan is active for just one day and it costs $2, for 500 MB of data. Most of their other data plans are valid for at least 30 days and include anywhere from 1 GB to 50 GB of mobile data.

Another thing to note about Ubigi is that they also sell monthly plans that are active for as long as you keep paying the subscription. The cheapest one is $12 per month and it includes 5 GB of data. You can use it in all 27 countries of the European Union, plus the UK and Switzerland.

  • Monthly plans
  • No Greece-only option

AIS SIM2Fly

AIS SIM2Fly is a Thailand-based company, so it’s not the best option for traveling to Europe. This is a good option for Thailand nationals, mostly because of the wide availability of these eSIMs in their region.

This provider doesn’t offer individual country plans for Europe. Instead, they have one global plan that you can buy for $33. It includes

  • 6 GB of data
  • is valid for two weeks
  • unlimited 2G Internet access
  • a Thai number for calls & SMS

You can easily top up the plan once you use up the initial data.

  • Unlimited (low-speed) data
  • Coverage in 120 countries

The O2 Go Card is intended for UK residents traveling abroad, or simply those who prefer a prepaid data plan instead of a postpaid one. The eSim grants you access to the O2 network, which includes Internet access in Greece without any data roaming charges,

You can purchase the O2 Go Card either directly from the network operator or from a different provider like SimOptions. The latter might be a better solution for international travelers, simply because it’s a little easier to pick it up and activate it.

The card includes 10 GB of data valid for 30 days, for $25. It also includes a Czech phone number, which allows you to make phone calls and send/receive texts without roaming charges in Greece.

SimOptions Smart Comfort X

The Smart Comfort X is a data plan offered by SimOptions, a popular international eSim provider. This provider offers their own eSim as well as eSims from other network providers, so you can easily compare deals on their website and find the best one for you.

Their eSim includes 5 GB of data valid for 30 days, and it costs around $18. The eSim does not include a phone number, but it’s also worth noting that it’s a regional eSim, meaning you will be able to use it in 26 other European countries, in addition to Greece. While you are in Greece, you will have access to the Nova network with the SimOptions eSim.

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Greece

The main benefit of getting an eSim for your Greece trip is that you’ll always have WiFi access. While Athens and some other bigger cities have decent free WiFi coverage, that’s not the case with the more remote areas in the country. If you’re planning on exploring outside the bigger cities (which you absolutely should because Greece has stunning nature), you’ll need to bring your own Internet.

If you get an eSim with a phone number, you can also make calls and send/receive texts without paying for roaming charges, which can be quite expensive. No data roaming charges is also an advantage of a Greece eSim.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Greece

Vodafone is the largest local mobile operator in Greece and they have the best network coverage in the country. If you plan on traveling to multiple cities and exploring remote areas in Greece, your best bet is an eSim that can connect to the Vodafone network.

They have several data plan packages for tourists, and you will get the option of choosing between physical sim cards and eSims. It’s worth noting that you must pay an additional fee of 9.9 Euros for a prepaid eSim, on top of whatever you’re paying for the data plan you choose.

There’s no extra fee for a physical sim card, so purchasing an eSim data plan from a local provider isn’t really the best option, at least in terms of value for money.

Cosmote is also a big network operator in Greece, and they offer internet-only sim cards for tourists. Their mobile data sim cards include 4G LTE access only, and they cost 20 Euros for 12 GB of data. When you use up all the original data, you can easily top up the sim card with more data for a discounted fee. It’s worth noting that this provider does not currently offer eSim data plans for tourists.

Nova (former WIND) also offers physical data-only sim cards for tourists, and they’re more affordable than Cosmote’s packages. But you can only purchase a physical sim card for a prepaid plan and not an eSim.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Greece

All devices that support embedded sim technology will be compatible with eSims in Greece. This includes all iOS and some Android devices that were released from 2018 onwards. All iPhones released since the iPhone XR are compatible with eSims and you should have no issues trying to activate an eSim in Greece.

It’s not quite as simple with Android phones, simply because there are a lot more of them. The eSim technology is still being reserved for the best and most expensive Android phones, and many budget and mid-range phones do not support this technology yet.

If you’re using a flagship phone that was released in the past 4-5 years, or a Google Pixel phone, you can most likely add an eSim data plan.

In any case, it’s super easy to check whether your phone supports an eSim, so be sure to do that before you purchase any Greece eSim plans. Just call *#06# and if you see an EID number, that means that your smartphone supports an eSim. If there is no such number, your phone most likely doesn’t support an eSim and you’ll need to purchase a physical sim card.

If your phone is compatible with an eSim but you’re still having issues setting it up, it’s best to contact the support team of the eSim provider for a quick resolution of the problem.

Data Needed When Traveling to Greece

The amount of data you need when traveling to Greece depends on how you’re used to using your phone, and what you plan to use the Internet for. If you need an Internet connection just to access maps for directions, use social media, and check your email, you will be fine with 3-5 GB for up to two weeks.

On the other hand, if you need to stay connected because you need to work while you’re in Greece, or you want the option of streaming movies and Youtube videos, your best bet is an unlimited data plan.

Just make sure that whatever data plan allows you to share the connection (create a hotspot) so you can connect other devices to the WiFi. Since most eSim providers who offer unlimited data plans don’t allow data sharing, a physical sim card will be your best bet in this case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is esim available in greece.

Yes, eSim is available in Greece and you can use an eSim with a data plan that you purchased from any international provider. However, tourists will have a harder time purchasing prepaid eSims in Greece, because they’re usually tied to postpaid packages.

How can I buy an eSim in Greece?

The best way to buy an eSim in Greece is to purchase one online, from one of the many international providers. Vodafone is the only local provider that offers eSim data plans for tourists, and those come with an additional fee of 10 Euros, on top of the existing cost of the data plan.

How do I activate my eSim in Greece?

To activate your eSim in Greece, just follow the instructions you received with it. Either scan the QR code, or open the settings on your smartphone, find the SIM manager, select add eSim/add a data plan, and input the necessary information to add the sim card.

The eSim card is normally activated as soon as you turn on mobile data, so if you add it before your trip, don’t use 4G before you arrive in Greece.

Guide to the best prepaid esim data plans for greece.

A guide to finding the best prepaid eSIM data plans for visiting Greece.

phones and technology

greece travel esim

The best way for travelers to get fast and affordable mobile data in Greece is with a prepaid eSIM data plan. But there are multiple different prepaid eSIM data plans available so I’ve written this guide to help you find the best eSIM for Greece so you can find the perfect option for your travels.

In A Hurry?  I recommend checking out both  SimOptions  and  Holafly  for the best deals on eSIM data plans for Greece. Continue reading this article for more in-depth, specific recommendations.

Reasons To Avoid Using Your Current Provider’s “International Plan”

Your current mobile phone provider likely offers an expensive international data plan option but the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, the AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day, Verizon TravelPass is also $10/day and many T-Mobile plans offer free international roaming but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying a prepaid Greece eSIM data plan from a European mobile company—for example, eSIM data plans from  Orange  or  Holafly  will cost you around $2-$3/day.

For more in-depth information, check out my guide on  How To Use Smartphones and Data Plans In Europe  and my  Guide To Using eSIM data plans in Europe .

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans For Greece

greece travel esim

Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there are only a few different mobile providers that offer eSIM data plans for Greece.

You essentially have two routes when it comes to eSIMs in Greece—buying an eSIM from a local mobile company or buying an eSIM designed for short-term visitors.

Local Mobile Providers in Greece

The first (and most complicated) option is to buy an eSIM data plan directly from one of the main local Greek mobile carriers ( Wind ,  Cosmote , and  Vodafone .). The problem for visitors is that many of these Greek plans are intended for people who live in Greece so you’re typically required to sign up for a long-term contract. Their websites and mobile interface aren’t always translated into English so that’s another hurdle you’ll need to deal with.

Additionally, the activation process can take a few hours so you’ll be wasting a lot of your precious vacation time stuck inside a mobile phone shop.

I only recommend this route if you’re visiting for multiple months as the cost savings aren’t practical for most short-term visitors. If you’re looking for a physical SIM card, check out my guide to the best prepaid SIM Cards for Greece .

Traveler-Friendly eSIM Plans For Greece

The best Greece eSIM option is to buy a prepaid data plan geared toward short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, translation issues, etc. For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan I’ve listed in this guide will vary slightly so spend time looking at the specific details of each plan. But here are the main things to consider:

  • Data Allowance:  Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
  • Plan Length:  eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.
  • Mobile Hot Spot Tethering:  Most eSIM plans don’t allow you to use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
  • NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between Apple iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).
  • NOTE: The eSIM plans that include voice calling will give your phone a European phone number but you’ll also keep your original phone number.

HOLAFLY GREECE ESIM [Best Unlimited Data Greece eSIM]

greece travel esim

Holafly  is a European-based eSIM provider that I’ve personally used while visiting Europe and had a great experience using (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to get a more in-depth look). Holafly sells both Greece-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from local Greek mobile providers (Vodafone and Wind) so there’s a possibility you might get less priority on the Vodafone/Wind networks during peak usage times than actual Vodafone/Wind customers.

Unlike other mobile companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

Holafly Greece eSIM Specs:

  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Tethering:  No
  • Network: Vodafone/Wind
  • Calls coverage:  60 minutes of credit make calls from all of Europe—except Iceland, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. Comes with an Austrian phone number.
  • Data service works everywhere in the EU

Bouygues My European eSIM

greece travel esim

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

  • Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
  • Data Tethering: Allowed
  • Service Speed: 4G/LTE
  • Calls: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas calls
  • Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas sms
  • Credit validity: 30 day
  • Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
  • Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB)

greece travel esim

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM

greece travel esim

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other mobile plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual European phone number that works anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You’ll get 20GB of data with this plan but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. But even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always top up to extend the plan for an additional 14 days).

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  20GB (Orange often upgrades plans to 30GB of data)
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used everywhere in Europe.

I’ve personally used the Orange Holiday Europe plan while traveling through Europe and it worked flawlessly. Read my Orange Holiday Europe review to hear more.

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM [Best Budget-Friendly Greece eSIM]

greece travel esim

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling during a typical trip to Europe—but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB (Orange often gives you 15GB of data)
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

SIM OPTIONS EUROPE 30GB ESIM

greece travel esim

The eSIM/SIM retailer SimOptions also sells their own data-only Europe 30GB eSIM that covers the EU. It doesn’t come with any bells or whistles but it does come with a generous 30GB of data and it’s valid for 30 days after activation.

  • Price: $49.99
  • Data Allowance: 30 GB
  • Calls:  None
  • Credit Validity: 30 Days

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR PHONE IN GREECE

greece travel esim

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  as well as tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Greece.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

Known for its tranquil island resorts and millennia of history and culture, Greece isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Greece at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Greece and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Greece by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like WIND Hellas.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Greece and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Greece . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Greece, for example, Airalo works directly with WIND Hellas to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Greece range from $5 to $49 and include between 1 GB and 20 GB of data. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone and it's very quick – in our test, it took us just two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). What's more, if you start running low on data during your trip, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

Considering Airalo? Take advantage of the following special offers until the 31st of December 2024:

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Greece, Holafly's data packages cost between $19 and $99 once off and are valid from five to 90 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Greece, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Greece like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

greece travel esim

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's.

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Greece or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Greece?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Greece, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Greece. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Greece without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Greece are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Greece is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Greek SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Greek trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Greece. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Greece,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Greece (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Greek networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Greek vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Greece from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Greece With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Greece with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Greece.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Greece to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Greece (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Greek phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Greece

Are you planning a trip in Greece, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Greece, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Greece, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Greece overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Greece, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. What is the best esim for greece, orange – simoptions.

Let’s remember that an eSIM is an embedded SIM, which means that it is built into the device. You cannot remove or insert an eSIM. One of the pros of this new technology is that you can get the plans from the comfort of your home. If you have a compatible device, all you need is to go online and find the best offers for you, make the purchase, and activate the eSIM with the QR code that they send to your email. This fact also makes it easier to get mobile services during a trip, because the eSIM can be purchased at home, and activated upon arrival.

One great option for you if you plan to travel to Greece is Orange – SimOptions. They have two types of eSIMs, one that includes only data and another one that includes all the services (data, messages, and calls). You can feel free to choose the one that better fits your needs.

Getting an eSIM gives you peace of mind that there will be no way to damage the card or the slot.

Another option when is to eSIM is Bouygues Telecom. They offer you something better than having services in Europe, and it is having unlimited services! That is right. Below you will see more details, however, take into account that the eSIM has to be activated in France first.

O2 – SimOptions

Do you have a smartphone that only supports SIM cards? Do not worry, we also thought about you. We know that until eSIMs become standard, many people will continue using SIM cards. That is why we bring you another option. O2 offers international SIM cards, and for Europe, they have a Tourist card.

Since 2012 I am traveling the world continuously and eventually turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly travel to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2022 I visited 62 countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used in the last two years.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. Providing essential travel tips is what made me start writing sim card guides about every country I visited and now on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world.

After that I will explain how e-sim cards work, more about the network coverage and 4G/5G data speed, answers on some FAQ about e-sim cards, the difference between e-sim cards and local prepaid sim cards and everything else you need to know.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom rates the two e-sims as the best e-sim cards for traveling to Greece in 2024:

1. My European eSIM from Bouygues Telecom - $44.90 USD

bouygues esim card for greece

  • 30 GB data in all of Europe
  • Unlimited calling in all of Europe
  • Valid for 30 days

  • 15 GB data in all of Europe
  • Valid for 15 days

You can order both Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards for Greece via SimOptions .

Both Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards come with a phone number from France and they support incoming calls and sms and they come with unlimited calls throughout all of Europe as well as free EU data roaming.

In fact, the Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards are therefore also rated as one of the best e-sim card for traveling to Europe in 2024.

If you are going on a Europe trip and visiting multiple countries then check out my list of the best prepaid and e-sim cards for traveling in Europe . You will find this Bouygues Telecom on top of the list of course.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Greece or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Greece.

However, you can still order a sim card for Greece on the internet before your trip. Check out Traveltomtom’s complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for Greece in 2024  or find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Greece

There are multiple website on the internet that sell e-sim cards for Greece. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Greece from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

As of April 2024 the mobile internet operators in Greece do not sell e-sim cards for tourists, they only provide physical prepaid sim cards. Luckily you can order e-sim cards for Greece easily online.

These are the 3 big e-sim card providers and they sell great e-sim card plans for Greece:

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for Greece.

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering your Greece e-sim card.

Why using SimOptions? They offer e-sim cards including calling and texting. Airalo and Nomad only offer data-only e-sim cards.

Unfortunately only one of them is 5G ready, the rest only supports 4G/LTE. So you can instal the e-sim card even when you are not in Europe yet. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I travel the world full time and I am on the road constantly so pretty much every week I am in a new country, which means I probably buy like 30-40 sim cards per year.

Traveltomtom is on the road to 197, meaning I would like to travel to every country in the world . As of April 2024 I have visited more than 155 countries, still more than 40 to go, but no rush.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for Greece?

cheapest esim card for greece 2024

The cheapest e-sim card for Greece is an e-sim card from Nomad for $4.5 USD with 1 GB data for 7 days. Airalo  has a similar e-sim card plan with 1 GB data for 7 days for $5 USD. Both e-sims are only valid in Greece and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Greece

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Greece in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Greece without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Greece with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Greece, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Greece so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

International data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed, but there is 4G/LTE in every tourist destination in Greece.

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Greece. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for Greece you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Greece e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your Greece e-sim card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Where to buy an e-sim card for Greece?

You can only buy an e-sim card for Greece on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Greece. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to Greece in 2024.

On arrival in Greece

When you arrive in Greece and you want to buy an e-sim card for tourists then you will have to go to an official retail store of an internet provider. How to locate the nearest one to your hotel? Use Google Maps. Not all mobile internet operators in Greece offer e-sim cards for tourists. Most tourist sim card plans are only available as a physical sim card.

In Athens they also sell prepaid sim cards for tourists on the streets, next to the entrances of big metro stations. These official resellers are often students and they sell only physical prepaid sim cards.

For more info about buying a prepaid sim card for tourists in Greece in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in Greece, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network.

Flying into Greece and landing in Athens then you can also buy a sim card for Greece on arrival. However, there are NO e-sim cards sold at Athens Airport, only physical prepaid sim cards and expect to pay tourist prices. The e-sim cards mentioned in this article are much cheaper.

Check out my complete guide for buying a sim card at Athens Airport .

When to order an e-sim card for Greece?

You can order an e-sim card for Greece pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Greece. Or if you want to maximise your validity then activate your Greece e-sim card on arrival after you connect to the free WiFi of the airport on arrival in Greece. All international airports in Greece have free public WiFi.

How do I know? Traveltomtom also wrote an arrival guide for Athens Airport .

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Greece

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Greece e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Greece. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a pocket WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Greece or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Greece and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Greece recommended above ( SimOptions ,  Airalo ,  Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Greece.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Greece e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to Greece.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a Greece e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Greece. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Greece e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

If your Greece e-sim card also allows you to make phone calls and you want to make a local call in Greece, you simply switch between the sim cards and make a local phone call with your Greece e-sim card.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings.

Can I make phone calls with a Greece e-sim card?

This depends on the type of e-sim card that you order. Only the international e-sim cards from SimOptions offer calling and texting. All the e-sim cards from Nomad and Airalo are data-only.

The international e-sim cards from SimOptions  come with unlimited calling in all of Europe as well as free EU data roaming. Which means you can call to and from any country in Europe to any European phone number at no extra charge. You can also use your data in every country in Europe.

Does a Greece e-sim card come with a phone number?

This also depends on the type of e-sim card that you buy. E-sims that support calls and sms they come with a phone number.

In the above Greece e-sim card comparison you can find all the specifications per e-sim card. All the international e-sim cards from SimOptions come with a phone number, which means they can also receive calls and sms.

Can I use 5G on a Greece e-sim card?

Yes, some of the Greece e-sim cards are now 5G ready. SimOptions sells two international e-sim cards that support 5G and all the Airalo e-sim cards for Greece are also 5G ready as of 2024.

orange 5g esim card for greece 2024

This  Orange Holiday Europe with 50 GB data for 28 days and unlimited calling and texting for $59.90 USD  from SimOptions is another Traveltomtom favorite e-sim card for traveling to Europe

This e-sim card is valid in all of Europe and therefore also rated as one of the best sim cards for traveling to Europe in 2024 .

The  Airalo e-sim cards for Greece  operate on the Nova 5G network, which is actually the weakest 5G network compared to Vodafone and Cosmote. For more info about the 4G/5G network coverage check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best prepaid sim cards in Greece in 2024 .

Are there e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data?

None of the by Traveltomtom recommended Greece e-sim cards for tourists include unlimited data.

Even if you would come across e-sim card providers that offer e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes.

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Greece e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card.

Via SimOptions you can order the Orange Holiday Europe e-sim card with 50 GB data, which is pretty much a sim card with unlimited data. Because using 50 GB data in just a couple weeks is a lot. Just make sure you are not uploading your whole camera roll to Google Drive or iCloud using data and you will be totally fine.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close look at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Greece in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Greece?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Greece, but are they also the best way to stay connected when traveling to Greece?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Greece:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are probably a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Local prepaid sim cards often offer bigger data plans than e-sim cards. However, local prepaid sim cards can only be purchased on arrival in Greece in a phone store and NOT on the internet.

More info about the best Greece prepaid sim cards for tourists can be found in my complete guide for buying a sim card for Greece in 2024.

For example in the link above in my comparison of the best prepaid sim cards for tourist in Greece you will find that for €12 EUR ($13 USD) you can buy a local prepaid sim card with unlimited data in Greece + calling minutes.

If this sounds like something you want then on arrival in Greece you will need to find a sim card shop nearby your hotel.

They also sell Vodafone sim cards at Athens Airport , but at tourist prices, no way near €12 EUR ($13 USD).

The advantage of local prepaid sim cards is that you buy them directly from the mobile internet provider. You get the cheapest prices, (unlimited) local calls & sms included, the biggest data packages and the fastest data speed.

Be aware that the local prepaid sim cards for tourists you buy in Greece are also NOT 5G ready. None of the mobile internet operators in Greece (Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova) allow prepaid users to use the 5G network, 4G/LTE is the max data speed on prepaid sim cards.

international prepaid sim card for greece

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Greece. Some of them are great for using in Greece as well as in all other countries in Europe and you can easily order them online.

Traveltomtom also put together a list of the best sim cards for traveling in Europe in 2024 .

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

Click here to order an international prepaid sim card for Greece directly online .

The advantage of an international prepaid sim card is they all included calling and texting. Most e-sim cards are data-only sim cards.

There are two different e-sim cards:

  • E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards that you buy in Greece in a mobile internet provider store

The big difference is that e-sim cards provided by the local internet operators in Greece: Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova can only be purchased at one of their phone stores around Greece.

However, as of April 2024 e-sim cards are NOT available for prepaid tourist sim cards. Traveltomtom personally shopped around to find out if e-sim cards were available for tourists. Every phone store I called in Athens, Crete and Thessaloniki, I got a NO!

This also counts for Athens Airport. Read all about it in my detailed guide about buying a sim card at Athens Airport .

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Greece, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple click. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Greece. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists? When we compare Greece e-sim card prices with local prepaid sim cards for Greece Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that in fact e-sim cards for Greece are the cheapest as they already start from just $4.5 USD.

However, if you are a heavy data user local prepaid sim cards are much better value for money as for €12 EUR ($13 USD) you already get a physical Greece prepaid sim card with unlimited data, including calls.

However, after a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected.

Therefore a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Greece. Faster, easier and less stress and depending on your needs sometimes even cheaper.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid sim card.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Greece were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison, tips and tricks it was easier to make a decision and order your e-sim card for Greece right away.

Not sure if eSIM is the right thing for you? Or perhaps, your phone doesn’t support eSIM, and you’re looking for a Greece SIM card instead.

There are three leading providers of Greek SIM cards: Wind, Cosmote, and Vodafone. All three offer 4G/LTE coverage.

You have two options for buying a SIM card in Greece:

  • Buy an expensive SIM card directly at the airport (rates are usually higher at the airport)

If you’re looking for the best rates, we recommend buying a SIM card at a local store. That said, remember that you can’t always find SIM stores at the airport. It can depend on your destination.

Depending on how long you plan to visit Greece and if you plan to use wifi service when possible, these factors will determine which eSIM you require.

If you plan to use wifi in Greece (hotels or cafes may offer this option free of charge), you should go with the smaller plan ( 1GB for $5, valid for 7 days ).

Alternatively, if you mostly rely on phone coverage for your data, then choose a plan that includes more data. I’d recommend this 3GB eSIM data pack for $9 , valid for 30 days.

How to Buy eSIM Card Greece

The process for how to buy an eSIM for Greece is straightforward.

This option allows you to make calls and send text messages within Greece. It will also give you access to data and local calling rates. There are many local carriers to check on and search prices, but when you can download the smallest data pack for eSIM for Greece, starting at just $5 for 1GB , it’s effortless.

The most popular eSIM for Greece is definitely the 10GB package for $25 . It’s a good deal, especially since it lasts for 30 days.

Perhaps I’m biased now because I just love eSIM as a product. In terms of convenience and affordability, Greece’s eSIM is a no-brainer.

eSIM Greece - Best Sim Card in Greece

Keep your initial SIM card in your phone

Another bonus of downloading a Greece eSIM is that you don’t need to remove your physical SIM card from your device.

An eSIM is digital, so it’s all encrypted inside your phone.

It’s great news because you won’t risk misplacing your teeny SIM card (as you’ll leave it inside your device); it also means you can receive your messages from home and keep your original phone number.

Another bonus is that once you buy the eSIM for Greece , you can navigate the Airalo app in English.

So there you have it – The Greece eSIM is the obvious choice for staying connected.

Regional eSIM to Travel in Europe

In addition to the single country, Greece eSIM card, you may be interested in Airalo’s Regional eSIM if you’re travelling around Europe.

So, if you plan to do a region of countries simultaneously (say Europe), your best bet is to buy a Regional EuroLINK eSIM .

It means that if you’re travelling through multiple countries in the same region at once, then the one Europe Regional eSIM (which covers 39 countries) is all you need to stay connected as you travel around.

Seriously, it’s excellent value and no fuss!

The smallest data pack is 1GB for $5 , valid for 7 days and the largest data pack is 100GB for $185 , valid for 180 days!

eSIM for Greece

Best eSIM for Greece: Stay Connected While Traveling in 2024

Planning a trip to Greece? An eSIM allows you to access data services without using a physical SIM card. eSIMs make it easy to stay connected while avoiding expensive roaming charges from your home carrier.

This guide compares the top eSIM providers available for travel in Greece. I evaluate cost, data amounts, network coverage and more to recommend the best eSIM plans.

Best eSIM for Greece

Why Get An eSIM for Greece?

Here are the biggest benefits of using an eSIM for trips to Greece:

  • Avoid expensive roaming charges  – Most home carriers charge very high rates to use your phone internationally. An eSIM saves money.
  • Easy setup  – eSIMs activate quickly after scanning a QR code. No need to find and swap SIM cards.
  • Flexible plans  – Choose data amounts and plan lengths to match your travel schedule.

Without a local SIM, many travelers rely on public WiFi or their phone’s roaming capability. But roaming data is very expensive – $10 per day is common from major U.S. carriers!

Buy eSIM For Travel

An eSIM gives you affordable access to fast, secure mobile data coverage throughout Greece. Prices start around $5 per week for a basic eSIM with 1GB of data.

Using eSIMs for Dual SIM Phone Setups

Another great perk of eSIMs is dual SIM capability. If your phone supports eSIM, you can use it simultaneously with your regular SIM.

For example, you can use your home SIM for calls and texts. The Greece eSIM provides a data connection to avoid roaming rates. With both SIMs active, you seamlessly switch connectivity as needed.

Dual SIM setups prevent the need to swap physical SIM cards during your trip. You also keep your home phone number available while traveling internationally.

eSIM Card for Greece: Finding the Right Plan Length and Data Amount

To find the best eSIM plan for your Greece travels, consider:

  • Length of trip  – eSIM plan durations range from 7 days to over 90 days. Match closely to your travel dates.
  • Data needs  – Light users might get by on 1 GB per week. But streaming video or using GPS can burn 5GB quickly. Estimate your normal usage before choosing a data amount.

Also pay attention to fine print details before purchasing an eSIM for Greece:

  • Hotspot/tethering capability
  • Roaming areas – Can you use the same eSIM elsewhere in Europe?
  • Expiration window to activate after purchase
  • Renewal/top-up options

Next, let’s compare top picks for eSIM providers in Greece across these criteria.

Recommended eSIM Providers for Travel in Greece

After researching all the options for eSIMs in Greece, I recommend three providers:

  • Orange Holiday

These eSIM providers have great network coverage in Greece plus affordable short-term prepaid plans designed for travelers.

Below I’ll outline key details on the best plans available from each Greece eSIM provider:

1. Holafly – Best for Unlimited Greece Data Plans

Holafly offers prepaid eSIM plans with unlimited high-speed data, a rarity among travel SIMs. If you plan to use lots of data, their unlimited eSIMs provide the best value.

Some key details on Holafly’s Greece data plans:

  • Unlimited 4G/LTE data
  • Plans available for 10 days ($34) up to 90 days ($99)
  • 60 minutes of calls to Europe included
  • Does NOT support hotspot/tethering
  • Runs on Vodafone and Wind networks

2. Airalo – Budget Greece eSIM Plans

For lighter data usage, Airalo eSIMs offer cheaper prepaid data amounts compared to competitors. Their 1GB weekly plan starts at only $5.

Here are the quick specifics on Airalo eSIMs for Greece travel:

  • Inexpensive data packages (1GB = $5 for 7 days)
  • 4G/LTE and 5G data speeds
  • eSIMs valid for 7, 15 or 30 days
  • No calling or SMS texting capability
  • Tethering IS supported
  • Uses Nova telecom network

3. Orange Holiday – Feature-Packed International eSIM

Orange Holiday eSIMs are designed for travel across Europe. But they also provide great coverage and rates if you only visit Greece.

Benefits of choosing Orange Holiday eSIMs for Greece include:

  • 20GB, 30GB or 50GB data amounts
  • Unlimited calls & texts within Europe
  • 14, 28 or 90-day options
  • Allows tethering
  • EU-wide roaming

One tradeoff – Orange Holiday plans are slightly pricier than domestic Greek eSIMs. But they add roaming flexibility.

Getting Setup With a Greece eSIM

Activating an eSIM requires just a few minutes and a working internet connection:

  • Order eSIM plan  – Purchase your eSIM via provider website
  • Receive QR activation code  – QR code delivered via email
  • Scan QR code to activate  – Use phone camera to register eSIM
  • Connect to network  – eSIM automatically connects after scanning

Once activated, you can manage your eSIM just like a regular SIM card in your phone’s settings.

Top-up data or monitor usage directly from your eSIM provider account. The process is quick and painless compared to finding a local SIM.

When Should I Order And Activate An eSIM for Greece?

You can purchase an eSIM for Greece before arrival or once you land in Athens or your other destination.

But pre-purchasing 1-2 weeks ahead is best to:

  • Avoid needing a connection right after long flights
  • Get questions answered from customer support
  • Ensure delivery of any required activation instructions

I also recommend activating your Greece eSIM just before the flight there. This prevents eating into your limited data amounts while still home.

Many eSIM data allotments only last 7-30 days. You want to maximize the gateway-to-gate time where you have data access in Greece. Activate as close to landing as practical.

Using eSIMs vs Local SIM Cards in Greece

Besides eSIMs, purchasing local Greek SIM cards is an option to save money on data. But dealing with physical SIMs does come with a few downsides for short trips:

  • Must find and travel to a cell phone store
  • Usually need to show passport and fill out paperwork
  • Swapping SIMs can be tedious and risky

Local SIMs also seldom offer good rates for short 1-2 week tourist visits. They really become cost-effective compared to eSIMs for longer month+ trips.

Thus casual Greece visitors will probably find prepaid tourist eSIMs simpler. But do compare pricing if you stay for longer periods.

Wrap Up: Stay Connected in Greece With an eSIM

Using an eSIM keeps your smartphone usable abroad while avoiding expensive roaming fees from standard carriers. eSIMs are quick to set up – just scan a QR code.

For standalone Greece trips, Holafly provides affordable unlimited data plans. Airalo offers the cheapest intro packages with 1-2GB.

Orange Holiday gives heavy data users options up to 50GB to cover Greece and beyond. Their eSIMs even include EU-wide calling.

Hope this guide helps you find the right eSIM plan for your upcoming Greece travels! Share any other questions in the comments.

The Holafly eSIM offers maximum speed coverage (3G4GLTE). But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.

Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?

Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your phone’s settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already the Holafly eSIM set up correctly.

What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM’s QR code?

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

This prepaid eSIM data plan includes unlimited data for the corresponding valid days. However, please note that the operator may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy, as it applies to all other network users. In particular, if the operator estimates the usage of more than 90GB of data in a month, they may temporarily reduce the speed to between 256-1024KB to avoid affecting other users. This limitation is intended to prevent network saturation and will be removed within 24 hours. If you think the local carrier has limited your speed, please get in touch with us by chat, and we will check if there is any incidence and how to restore your rate to the maximum speed permitted by the network.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

You can’t do that with the Greece plan. If you wish to extend your plan, you can purchase a new eSIM.

Can I share data with other devices?

Certainly! With the Greece eSIM, you have the capability to share up to 500MB of data per day across devices by creating a WiFi connection using your smartphone. Refer to your device instructions for guidance on setting up a WiFi connection via a mobile hotspot.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cellphone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. You can rename the data plan on your phone. Then, you’ll be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cellphone’s settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Check your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan, and turn on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code and take it with you on your vacation just in case. Remember that you need a prior internet connection to activate the eSIM. Set up is quick and you will be able to enjoy your data plan right away.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the virtual SIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSIM at the same time. Choose the SIM card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. eSIM is more secure than a physical SIM because it can't be removed if your iPhone is lost or stolen.

With eSIM, you don't need to obtain, carry, and swap physical SIM cards (which can also be lost), or wait for them to arrive by mail.

You can have two eSIMs active on supported iPhone models at the same time. This could, for example, include one eSIM for your home and another eSIM for the place you're visiting.

You can swap which of your stored eSIMs are active simply by changing your selections in Settings. This might be helpful if you travel regularly to the same places.

These prepaid carrier options might offer more affordable local plans for data, voice, and text. Check with individual carriers for details.

eSIMs have gained a lot of traction in recent years, especially in international travel. Admit it, you do not like getting into huge queues to buy an eSIM just after you’ve landed at your dream location. You can now skip the queue with the best eSIM for international travel, with plans ranging from 3 days to as long as a year.

These eSIMs are easy to install and provide excellent network coverage. However, with so many providers offering eSIMs, which one should you purchase? I have done the hard yards to find and review the best eSIM you can get for international travel, regardless of whether you want to travel to Europe, the USA, Asia, Africa or Australia. So, make sure you read till the end to know everything you could ever need before purchasing your next eSIM.

What is an eSIM?

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

eSIM cards are digital SIM cards already embedded in the mobile device, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards. It is a small rewritable chip fixed inside your phone, which connects with an antenna to function as a SIM card. The antenna is nothing but a network selected by you.

Since it is rewritable, you can change your operator with just a simple phone call. There’s no need to go through the hassle of purchasing a new SIM card and waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

Actually, eSIMs have been around for quite some time now. You can find many devices that are compatible with eSIMs. But when iPhone decided to remove the good old SIM card slot and shift the device to being completely eSIM featured, this feature got its attention. The main reason eSIMs are being preferred is because of their ease of use and convenience.

Another advantage of eSIM is that it saves space accommodated by the SIM card holder, leading to either smaller phones or larger batteries, both of which are interesting propositions. Not to mention, the enormous amount of plastic being used to make all these SIM cards will no longer be required.

eSIMs could be pretty revolutionary as they can be used to enable 5G connectivity in almost anything we would want it to, preferably glasses or a fitness tracker, as it doesn’t take up as much space inside the device.

While there’s no major difference between using an eSIM card and a physical SIM card, eSIMs could be a slight turnoff when you want to switch phones. That said, the benefits of eSIM certainly outweigh a few cons here and there.

Why should I get an eSIM for international travel?

Now that we know what an eSIM is, let’s dive into why it’s so beneficial for international travel. The best thing about them is that you can store as many as eight (sometimes even more) on your phone and activate the SIM when needed without having to pay additional roaming charges.

Of course, if your current network operator provides free roaming service, there's no need to consider a travel-specific or local SIM from the place you're traveling to. But if that's not the case, it can be quite a task to find the right operator and negotiate with language barriers.

eSIMs are also generally more secure than physical SIMs since there’s no need to remove them in case you want to change your SIM card, so they practically can’t get lost. And if your phone gets lost or stolen, tracking it through the eSIM card is much easier since it cannot be removed from the device.

Note that international roaming works the same way on physical and eSIMS. The only difference that sets the two apart is that while you can add only two physical SIMs at a time, you can conveniently purchase an eSIM from a local carrier of the place you are visiting without losing your old numbers. This is especially handy when you are visiting multiple countries.

With eSIMs, switching SIMs is as easy as purchasing a plan online and activating it after completing the payment. If you travel frequently for business or any other purpose, switching contact numbers could be quite a frequent task. With eSIMs, you can shuffle between SIM cards as soon as you enter the airport or right when you leave the country.

Is my phone compatible with eSIM?

Most phones manufactured after 2018 are compatible with eSIMs, except for a few exceptions depending on the location and carrier. IPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are among the first eSIM-compatible iPhones that came out in 2018.

Follow these steps to see if your iOS is eSIM compatible and carrier unlocked:

  • Go to Settings > General > About
  • Scroll down to find the Carrier Lock section
  • If your device is unlocked, it will show "No SIM restrictions" If that's not the case, you need to unlock your device first.
  • If you have an iOS 15 or later, Scroll down to "Available SIM" and if you have earlier iOS versions, find "Digital SIM"
  • If your phone supports eSIMs, it will show a 15-digit IMEI number

The following are the latest models that support eSIM:

  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE 3 (2022)
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

You can also use eSIMs on the following iPads:

  • iPad Pro 11″ (model A2068 onwards)
  • iPad Air (model A2123 onwards)
  • iPad Pro 12.9″ (model A2069 onwards)
  • iPad (model A2198 onwards)
  • IPad 10th generación (2022)
  • iPad Mini (model A2124 onwards)

For Android numbers, it is best to check with the manufacturer if your device is compatible with eSIM. This, too, depends on the model, place of manufacturing, and the carrier used for the Android device.

Another way to check is by going to the settings > Network & Internet and tapping on the "eSIM cards". If you find a "Download a SIM instead?" option, your device is eSIM-compatible

You can also check if your phone has an EID (Embedded Identity Document Number), which is the serial number that matches with the eSIM embedded in your device.

  • Dial *#06# and press call
  • If your device is eSIM-compatible, you'll be able to view your EID number

Some popular Android phones that support eSIMs include:

  • Samsung Galaxy S21 models
  • Samsung Galaxy S22 models
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 20
  • Samsung Galaxy Fold Series
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Series
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 models
  • Google Pixel 7
  • Google Pixel 6
  • Google Pixel 4
  • Google Pixel Fold
  • Google Pixel 3 XL
  • Huawei P40 Series
  • Oppo Reno 5A
  • Oppo Find X5
  • Sony Xperia 1 V
  • Xiaomi 13 Series
  • Sony Xperia 10 III Lite
  • Motorola Edge+
  • Motorola Razr 2019

Note that this isn’t an exhaustive list — it’s only an indicative list of popular smartphones that support eSIMs. In case you do not find your phone year, check with your manufacturer.

Top 10 eSIM providers for international travel

Airhub

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Airhub is a huge online store from which you can buy eSIMs in over 190+ countries worldwide. It has a massive variety of eSIM plans that include data, local call minutes, SMS, and international call minutes.

While most eSIM providers usually have around 3-5 plans per country, Airhub provides up to 15 plans to choose from for a single country which gives you the flexibility to select the plan that resonates best with your needs. Also, Airhub has truly managed to make some of the best partnerships with local companies to offer the cost-effective deal that it does.

If you're going to hang in a country for multiple months, you can simply go for the monthly subscriptions. Some of these plans also include unlimited voice minutes and SMS - you truly get the best deal here.

The majority of plans that you will find on the website are prepaid, with a few postpaid plans and a postpaid monthly subscription in a few countries, the most important one being the United States. However, it doesn't have strong coverage in Latin America. For example, I found them offering only a single plan in countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. Moreover, there are no plans for countries like Cuba, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Ecuador.

The regional plans offer an attractive price proposition as well, with options available in APAC, Africa, North America, the Middle East, and Europe. We highly recommend the Europe plan if you're about to go on a Europe tour. Airhub covers up to 49 countries in the plans, with the plans starting at just $11 for a month with a 3GB data limit. We could also spot a few 1-year plans in Europe ranging from 10GB to 100GB for the year.

When you open the Airhub app, there's not a lot going on like most other eSIM apps — the interface is clean and intuitive. After logging in, you will find a page that lets you select the country, with three tabs differentiating local eSIMs, regional eSIMs, and Monthly plans (note that the global package is included in the regional eSIM category).

Concluding, Airhub stands out with its great plans, minimalist apps, and websites and ticks all the boxes of travelers and remote workers looking for an affordable and effective eSIM.

Best eSIM for customizable plans

Airalo

Airalo is easily one of the best eSIM providers for travelers looking for an affordable and reliable SIM card, which plans in more than 200 countries. The stand-out thing about Airalo is its great collaborations with local telco companies all over the world which makes it the cost leader that it is today.

Keep in mind that this also means the cost of Airalo depends on the place you're traveling to, and the cost of data there — validity and data limit being the other two factors that affect its price.

It also offers 7 regional plans, including Latin America and Caribbean Islands — regions that aren’t well catered by other eSIM providers.

It also has a specific global plan that provides access to around 84 countries worldwide — perfect for international travelers. You can choose between 1GB to 20GB of data spread across 7 days to 180 days validity.

To buy the eSIM, you simply have to go to the app, create an account, choose the place you are traveling to, the package of your choice, and then install the eSIM. After that, you’ll need to follow a simple eSIM activation procedure, and that’s it. The payment can be made through a credit card or Apple Pay.

One major thing to look out for getting an Airalo eSIM is that most of them don't offer voice minutes — there's only a data plan. So if you're someone who makes a lot of voice calls throughout the day, you might want to look out for an alternative here. That said, you can always communicate via Internet calls when needed.

Airalo has a loyalty feature where you get credit every time you purchase data from the service provider. Initially, you get a 5% Airalo credit for every purchase, which keeps increasing as you collect more and more credit. So, initially, if you spend $20 on a package, you get a $1 credit that you can use for future purchases.

Best eSIM for easy installation

AloSIM

AloSIM is a Canada-based tech company that offers great prepaid data SIMs at affordable prices. One innovative feature of the app is its AloSIM data calculator that helps you find the estimated data that you will require depending on the things you use your internet for on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Once you have decided on the amount of data you need, you can head over to the eSIM area and select a plan to your liking.

The reason why this is so great is because it bears testimony to the brand's transparency and genuineness. Being able to calculate your daily requirements won't let you overspend on something you don't need.

Another thing I love about AloSIM is that you get to see which partnering networks you're gonna be connected with before you purchase any package so that you can assure that you are connected to a reliable network. You can also check the speed availability in the region (3G, 4G, 5G, or LTE). This is something most eSIM providers do not offer.

Installing the eSIM is also easy with AloSIM. There are three ways in which you can do that:

1. Automatic installation — if you want to start using your plan straight away, you should go with this option.

2. Scanning QR code — this option is available in almost all eSIM providers — you just have to scan the QR code to activate your network.

3. Manual installation — You will have to go through a step-by-step instruction manual to adjust your settings and activate your eSIM.

The prices at AloSIM are among the most reasonable I’ve seen. You can get the 5 GB for 30 days plan for as low as $16 in the US. That's a lot of difference compared to the plan your home SIM can provide you. Plus, data sharing is supported, so you can use your personal hotspot to connect to other devices or let a friend free ride with you. AloSIM also offers as many as 11 regional plans — one of the highest on our list.

However, I couldn’t spot a regional plan for Africa or an extensive Asian plan. The Asian regional plan covers just five countries in Southeast Asia. Thus, it isn’t a great option if you’re traveling East.

Just like every data-only eSIM, you will not get a phone number with AloSIM. Also, there's no unlimited plan for you to rely on if you're a data junkie. Overall, AloSIM stands out with its transparency, auto-installation feature, and affordable price.

Best eSIM for value for money

Nomad

Nomad eSIM is a great option if you’re on short trips and need a travel eSIM that doesn't cost you a fortune. It is well-known for its short-duration plans of 7 and 15 days. Its offerings are divided into regional plans and individual country plans.

You can also purchase an unlimited data plan in selected individual countries, such as the UK, something that isn’t available with regional plans. With Nomad, you can purchase one GB of data for as low as $1.30 (in Asia and the Americas).

It has an incredible value proposition in North America, Asia, and Europe. However, when it comes to Latin America, you can definitely find cheaper options. For example, 1GB of data with a 7-day validity costs $9 on Nomad. However, the same plan is available at $6.5 on Airalo, with both of them covering the same three counties —Canada, USA, and Mexico,

What we love about this provider is that it doesn't charge you any one-time connection fee or even a fee for the SIM card itself. There's no hidden cost, and you don't have to worry about enormous roaming costs as well. Just pay for the upfront amount of the package, and you’re good to go.

There are eight regional plans - APAC, Nordic, Europe, SEA - Oceania, Global, North America, Africa, and Middle East. Regional plans allow you to buy the plan once and use it in a specific group of countries - no need to buy a new eSIM for every country you travel to. For example, if you’re visiting France, Germany, and Italy, simply get the Europe regional plan. You’ll not need to buy a separate eSIM in each country.

The global plan is decent, with an option to purchase a global e-Sim for either 110 countries or 140 countries. The 110-country plan starts at $25/GB (validity of 7 days), while the 140-country plan starts at $19/GB for the same validity period.

Recently, Nomad added an SMS plan available in selected countries like Canada, the United States, and the UK. I found the plan to be pretty reasonable, too, starting at 100 texts for $4.

What's more, Nomad has one of the most user-friendly apps. You can easily find all the plans, and the interface is very clean. You can also track your data usage on the go and add more data if you seem to be outrunning your current limit.

If you're not an expert at understanding chunky instructions, you'll love its setup process that takes you through the app step by step and even includes pictures to clearly illustrate what you need to do.

If there's still something you need help understanding, there's built-in 24/7 message support, and the response time is quick and reliable. It doesn't have a live chat feature like most of the peers.

Concluding, Nomad is a solid option for frequent travelers with its short-term packages at affordable prices and easy-to-set-up interface. With the commendable user-friendliness of this provider’s app and reliable customer support, it’s one of the best travel eSIMs.

Best eSIM for security

Instabridge

5. Instabridge

Instabridge has been around for a while, and its eSIM services are truly one to consider if you are looking for a safe and seamless internet connection. This is especially recommended if you're going to stay in one place for a long time — you can find plans that last up to a year.

It is the #1 app on iPhone for global internet access, and with access to more than 190 countries and over 200 million app downloads, you can guess that it's a hot pick among travelers.  However, you do not get any call minutes or SMS facility with Instabridge’s eSIM. Thus, you’ve to rely on Internet-based voice calls and texts — certainly not a deal-breaker.

If you are tight on budget but want to purchase a plan, you can score mobile data packages by watching ads on the app. The collection won't be too grand, of course, but it'll get you a decent data pack if you spend your free time on the app.

The app in itself is pretty modern and intuitive. You can simply select the country you’re traveling to and choose the amount of data you need. Next, select the duration — one-time, monthly, or yearly. You’re done — simply make the payment and enjoy your internet.

Note that the website on the desktop version doesn't show all the local plans, so it's important to check the plans on the app if you don't find a suitable plan for you. You can pick between subscriptions and one-off plans depending on your needs. The website typically doesn’t show data plans for more than 30 days.

Customer support isn't always the fastest — it can take a few hours to get a reply if you're stuck in the middle of something. But you can look out for the FAQs and manuals to help you out, and the app is easy to use, too. So there are chances that you might not even need customer support.

You can purchase multiple plans with the same eSIM, so there's no need to collect a hefty number of eSIMs if you're traveling to multiple places. For example, if you're going to visit USA, Germany, and France over the holidays, you can just purchase a plan for each of these places and track the data usage of each of these packages through the app.

Instabridge has a strong commitment to bringing the internet to everyone. For the same, it has decided to give away 1GB of data to someone in a developing nation for every 1 GB of data you purchase.

Concluding, Instabridge is a solid provider of data-only plans, a must-have for users who value security over anything.

Best eSIM for network coverage

BNESIM

BNESIM offers mobile data contracts in over 170 countries —greater than most providers in our list, like Nomad. You can rest assured that no matter which country you are traveling to, you will definitely find a plan or more with BNESIM.

Where this provider wins against the competition is its “pay-as-you-go” plans. These are plans with no expiration date. For example, if you purchase the 1GB USA data plan for $6.73, you can use the plan as long as you do not exhaust the entire data without any time restriction. This is particularly helpful for users that use minimal data and end up wasting their data by the end of the plan.

What I like about BNESIM is its diverse regional plans. It currently offers Regional plans in Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, Middle East, and Africa. Apart from this, there are two unlimited data regional plans - something other providers don’t offer.

1. BNESIM Infinity Europe

2. BNESIM Infinity Asia

For example, the Infinity Aisa plan covers 28 countries with options to purchase one-time, daily, and monthly plans. I found the “Daily Plan’ really useful in the modern data usage context. It offers a certain data limit for each day of the plan. For example, the 1GB daily data Asia plan costs just $8.85 — a steal, in my opinion.

I also found an extensive “Support” section on its website with guides on installing eSIMs on various devices, such as iPhone, iPad, and Android phones. Each of these guides includes pictures that make your job easier. Just like Airalo, BNESIM also partners with local networks to provide reliable bandwidth, which makes the network stronger in some areas.

However, if you’re looking for a longer-duration plan, BNESIM doesn’t get the job done. With a maximum validity of 30 days, their plans primarily focus on short-duration plans. Another weird thing about BNESIM is its “auto-renewal” feature — your plan will be auto-renewed at the end of the term. You’ll have to cancel the plan manually on its website or app.

All in all, BNESIM is an ideal choice for travelers looking for a flexible and cost-effective global roaming solution for frequent travel.

Best eSIM for unlimited data

Holafly

Holafly eSIM cards are among the few options offering unlimited data plans — you can send as many videos and photos with your family without worrying about the data limit. In the few countries that it doesn't give unlimited data, it offers higher data limits than most other providers.

In terms of duration, too, there's great flexibility. You can get plans that last 5, 10, 15, 20, 60, and 90 days. In short, there will always be a plan close to the number of days you're traveling for in about 160 countries that Holafly caters to.

On the price front, Holafly is a little high-end, but it's worth the unlimited data and stress-free traveling it offers. For example, its 5-day unlimited data plan for the USA costs $19. It also offers regional plans. However, I found it tough to locate these plans on its website, as there’s no dedicated “Regional Plans” section as in some other websites like Nomad and Airhub.

Brands like Airalo are significantly cheaper than Holafly, but you will have to get top-up plans if you exhaust your data mid-journey, which can be troublesome if you travel alone and don't have anyone to provide you hotspot in the meanwhile.

Installing the eSIM is also a breeze with Holafly. Simply scan the QR code you receive after purchasing a plan and follow the prompts. You will be guided through each step of the process, and the payment can be made through various portals like a credit card, debit card, PayPal, Google Pay, or Apple Pay. You can also use a code for manual installation if you don't want to scan the QR code.

Holafly‘s customer support is one of the best in the market. You can expect a reply from them within less than a minute of entering your query. With language support in English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish, you can easily access the 24/7 support via WhatsApp or chat. On top of that, there's a frequently asked questions section that will solve most of your queries regarding the installation of the eSIM.

However, if you plan to buy a single Holafly eSIM for your family, thinking that the unlimited data plan will do the trick, beware. Holafly eSIM doesn't allow data sharing with other devices as of now.

While Holafly has great data plans, it doesn't include calls with all plans or SMS service. Currently, you can make calls up to 60 minutes and receive calls for up to 60 minutes in Europe, Spain, France, Italy, and Germany. However, I didn’t find this off-putting due to the sheer non-functionality of SMS and calls these days. You can always make calls or send texts through Holafly’s unlimited Internet (WhatsApp, Skype, or other apps).   Use code TECHRADAR to get 5% off.

Best eSIM for global plans

GlobaleSIM

8. GlobaleSIM

GlobaleSIM provides global and local data plans for travelers and tourists in more than 150 countries, and you get extendable coverage with over 400 network carriers. It was among the first providers of eSIM when it first launched in 2016.

There are four broad plans that GlobaleSIM offers:

1. Most Popular Plan - available in 63 countries

2. Most Popular+ Plan - available in 93 countries

3. Special Plan - available in 115 countries

4. Special + Plan - available in 143 countries

For example, its “Most Popular Plan” starts at $3.00 for 500MB of data for 5 days. You also get the option of adding call minutes to your plan and selecting either a US, a UK, or a Canadian number. As there are several countries being covered under a single plan, you obviously cannot expect to get a local number to the place you're visiting, and since there's no roaming charge, a US, UK, or Canadian number isn't that bad, too, after all.

Many eSIM providers ask you to create an account before purchasing, but this one doesn't. You just have to fill out the required information, like your name, surname, and email address, and you're done. You can complete your payment via either PayPal or a credit card.

However, I couldn’t find many single-country plans on GlobaleSIM. Even for a popular destination like the US, you’ll have to get a bundled plan which includes both the US and Canada. Moreover, despite being in the market for so long, it's a little disappointing that the provider doesn't have an application of its own, so you'll have to purchase the eSIM directly from the website.

Unlike most other providers in the market, GlobaleSIM doesn't have chat support, the only way that you can connect to them is through emails, and the response time isn't as fast as chat support either.

At first, you won't even find customer service or a way to get in touch with them on the front page of the website or while skimming through plans. You will have to go all the way down the page to find it. Simply put, the customer support is disappointing.

All in all, GlobaleSIM is a great eSIM to consider if you're looking for a global plan that's easy to set up and purchase.

Best eSIM for Europe

Holiday eSIM

9. Holiday eSIM

Holiday eSIM is the best-prepaid service provider if you're traveling to Europe, with robust connections in every European country for high-speed data.

What I like the most about this provider is that, unlike others, you get a French number with the eSIM. Its most popular plan includes unlimited calls and texts in Europe, 120 minutes of worldwide calling, and 1,000 texts. That's more than enough proposition for whatever your needs are. But of course, if all you are looking for is a data eSIM, you can also purchase the data-only packages it offers.

The Orange holiday app is user-friendly and doesn't require any registration prior to installing the eSIM. All you have to do is install the eSIM, and the provider will automatically connect to the strongest local European mobile network provider in that area.

Costing around $44.10 for 10GB of data with a validity of 14 days, you might argue that this isn't a cheap option. However, if you're looking to have amazing internet no matter which European street you are wandering on, this is worth the penny it costs.

Besides the European plan, there's also a competent data-only global plan with 6GB of data with a 15-day validity. What’s more — you can share your data as a hotspot, so if you want to work on your laptop while away, it won't be a problem.

However, it doesn’t offer a lot of plan options. Thus, you do not have much flexibility, either in terms of the validity period or data limits. Moreover, I did not like the website interface as much as some other providers on our list. Finding your destination country is difficult — you’ll have to choose from a long list of options. Even when you do, you’ll find “Regional” and “Global” plans in every country. This essentially means that Holiday eSIM does not offer as many individual country plans.

In conclusion, if you value your network connection more than your product's budget-friendliness, you should consider this for your European trip. While we're not trying to take away that this provider's plans will cost you more than the local plan you can buy from a local provider, there are also a few cheaper options that might work for you if your internet usage isn't a lot.

Best eSIM for data-only plans

Flexiroam

10. Flexiroam

eSIMs are an important part of Flexiroam's wide line of products, and it's one of the best data-only eSIM lines out there. You get access to more than 500 mobile networks worldwide through its partnership with Jersey Telecom, with multiple networks in a single place, meaning you are never limited to just one network with this one.

When traveling, the eSIM automatically connects itself to the strongest network connection in that area for reliable and strong coverage no matter where you go.  If you still don't feel content with the connected network, you can manually switch to the provider of your choice and use it if you find that more comfortable.

Most providers like Airalo and BNESIM work with one single provider in one area, and it’s possible that the local provider might not be the best for the area you're visiting. This is never the issue with Flexiroam.

There are more than 700 eSIM plans to choose from. However, these plans aren’t as neatly categorized as some other providers. You’ll have to select from a long drop-down list when looking for individual country plans. Its regional plans are a mixed bag of chocolates. While there are two unique regional plans - Greater Europe and Greater China, I couldn’t find a regional plan for Asia that is offered by almost every other competitor. If you’re on an Asian trip, you’ll want to look at some other eSIMs on our list.

Having said that, Flexiroam is among the few providers that include plans for less than 7 days, and unlike Holafly, it allows data sharing through both tethering and Hotspot. So if you're traveling in a group, you can just buy a single pack and share it with your entire group.

Being a data-only eSIM, you don't get a phone number to call in case there's a network coverage issue and your internet stops working. This can usually be a problem if you're traveling to remote places.

Concluding, Flexiroam is definitely worth your bucks if you are looking for a data-only eSIM for its affordability and wider network coverage.

Best eSIMs for international travel FAQs

How to choose the best esim for international travel .

While all the providers have something or the other to offer,  it's important to know the factors that make an eSIM the best among them.

1. The place that you are traveling to

It's important to check the network coverage of an eSIM in the place you're visiting. eSIM providers often offer amazing coverage in particular countries but mediocre performance in others. This is because eSIMs collaborate or partner with local service providers in different countries to enhance network coverage. So make sure that you check the service of the local provider that's accessible to you and select the eSIM provider that has coverage to the place you're traveling to.

Depending on the number of places you are going to visit, you can select local, regional, and global eSIMs. Here's how they differ:

  • Local eSIM — you should go for this eSIM if you're traveling to just one country. For example, if you're traveling to Paris, you can get a local France eSIM.
  • Regional eSIM — This is a perfect option if you're going to travel to a couple of countries within the same region. Let’s say you're planning a Europe trip; in that case, instead of buying a local SIM for each country, it’s a lot more convenient to get a regional eSIM that will work on all the countries in Europe you're visiting.
  • Global eSIM — global eSIM allows you to connect several countries all over the world, which is perfect if you're going to travel worldwide or counties that are in different regions.

2. How much data will you need?

If your data requirements are ambitious, you should preferably look for a cheap eSIM or one that provides unlimited data. On the other hand, if your data needs aren't too demanding, but you need internet in remote places, you might have to shell out a bit more for quality internet. To get an idea of how much data different apps use up, have a look at this:

  • Google Maps: 5MB per hour
  • Social Media: 50MB per hour
  • Internet Browsing: 50MB per hour
  • Online Gaming: 70+MB per hour
  • Streaming Music: 100MB per hour
  • SD Video: 1GB per hour
  • HD Video: 4GB per hour
  • 4K Video: 7GB per hour

3. How long will you be abroad?

All eSIM providers have different validity options — you can choose between 7, 10, 15, 30, 60, 90 days plans, and so on. Find a plan with a validity period that outlines how long you're going to be using the eSIM.

Some eSIM providers provide plans shorter than 7 days; look out for them if you're going to be away for the weekend. On the other hand, if your data usage is moderate, but you are traveling for longer periods, an unlimited plan might be the best for you.

How do eSIM work?

An eSIM card or embedded SIM card is a chip in your phone that lets you connect to a network by simply downloading an eSIM profile and activating it without having to swap the SIM card physically.

eSIMs function similarly to physical cards — the only difference is that the card, instead of being inserted into the devices, can now be downloaded through an app and activated by scanning a QR code or following the steps provided in the manual.

It is very easy to install an eSIM into the devices that are compatible with it. You can use multiple operators simultaneously and add several data plans according to your needs, as there's no physical space required to limit the number.

You just have to change the profile to switch between one eSIM to another. This way, you can find the network in another eSIM if one SIM doesn't have a network. You can even have one SIM each for business and personal purposes.

Since eSIMs can be updated electronically, providers in the US and UK are using eSIMs for the Internet of Things, adding a mobile network to almost anything that could use one, like cars and traffic lights.

While all the latest Apple devices are eSIM-compatible, most Android devices are also catching up. For example, the new Motorola Razr doesn't have a physical SIM card slot and only supports eSIM. Google Pixel phones and other Android devices, including laptops and tablets, have started providing eSIMs too.

If you have already set up eSIM Carrier Activation, follow these steps to activate your SIM:

  • On turning on your phone, you will find a notification appearing that says "Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed", tap on it.
  • If it doesn't pop up right away, In the Settings app, tap Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed.
  • You will find a "Continue" at the bottom of the screen. After that, the plan must have been activated.
  • Make a call on your iPhone to check its cellular connectivity.
  • If you're unable to make the call, contact your carrier. If the plan you activated replaces the plan on your physical SIM, your eSIM has been activated. Now remove your physical SIM. Then restart your iPhone.

After this, your eSIM will actively run on your phone, and you can use it along with your physical SIM cards too. This will especially be appreciated by those who don't like to give away their phone numbers when traveling abroad.

Can I use more than one eSIM provider when traveling abroad?

Yes, you can use more than one eSIM, depending on whether you use Android or iOS. When traveling, you’d want to use at least two SIMs simultaneously so that you don't lose touch with the older SIM contact when using the new local SIM.

iPhones can store up to 5-10 eSIMs on the device, depending on the exact model. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 Mini allow you to use two eSIMs simultaneously. On the flip side, you can use only one eSIM with iPhone 12 models, iPhone 11 models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR.

Similarly, Androids can also store 5-7 eSIMs on the device. However, you can only activate and use one eSIM at a time.

This makes your work a lot easier. Suppose you’re traveling to Asia and Europe within a short span of time; you can purchase two eSIMs on your device. Simply activate the eSIM once you transition from one destination to another. This is more convenient compared to traditional SIMs, where you would have had to physically purchase a SIM at every destination you visit.

Traditional phones generally feature a maximum of 2 SIM cards in devices with dual SIM slots. In devices like iPhones that usually don't have a dual SIM feature, you will have to get a student device if you wish to use more than one SIM at once.

How to set up and activate an eSIM on iOS

Devices like iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later support eSIM. And recently, it completely ditched the physical SIM card slot in all the US models of iPhone 14. While other countries still have the SIM card slot, Apple has made it clear that it will soon completely get rid of the physical SIM card.

Note that Apple’s eSIM feature is not yet available in mainland China and a few parts of Hong Kong and Macao. These countries are still fully dependent on physical SIMs.

Setting up and activating an eSIM is super easy if you follow the instructions below:

  • On your iOS device, follow Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. If this doesn't work, try Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM.
  • Click on the “Transfer from Nearby iPhone” option. At this point, remember that both iPhones have to be on iOS 16 for this to work.
  • You will find instructions on the old model to help you through the process. Either tap the transfer button or enter the verification code on the older phone, which will be sent to the new iPhone.
  • Once you transfer the eSIM to the newer iPhone, it is deactivated from your old device, and your carrier will send you a notification to complete the setup on your new iPhone.

QR code support:

  • If your carrier has issued you a QR code, you can simply select “Use QR Code” while setting up the new iPhone.
  • You can find the “Use QR Code” option under Settings > Mobile Data > Add eSIM.

Are eSIM better than physical SIM cards?

eSIM card is a recently developed digital version of a physical SIM card that solves most problems faced while using a physical SIM card. While the functionality of both the SIMs has no difference, eSIM has an almost negligible chance of getting damaged, and since they cannot be physically detached from the device, it is impossible to lose them.

If your device gets stolen, the thief will first throw out your SIM card because the device can be easily tracked through its SIM card. With eSIMs, this option just isn't there, so you can easily locate your device if it's ever stolen or lost.

Also, eSIM frees up the space that a SIM card blocks. This space can be used to better optimize the device and leave less room for dust to enter. It also makes it better for devices like smartwatches to have an eSIM.

On the other hand, eSIMs aren't as widely recognized yet, and physical SIM cards are supported on all devices. If your device doesn't support it, you'll have to get another one to switch to eSIMs.

Plus, if you want to change your device, it is a lot more convenient to just place your SIM card in a different device, and just the day started. The same thing goes for a situation when you want to transfer contacts that are saved in your SIM card.

eSIMs store data on the cloud. You can simply download it when needed. This way, your data remains safe and doesn't use up any storage on your device.

Finally, both eSIMs and physical SIM cards have benefits of their own, and the better option definitely depends on personal preference, but objectively, eSIM is definitely the better option.

Final verdict

eSIMs have, undoubtedly, made traveling much easier. With affordable plans, excellent connections, and various validity options to choose from, eSIMs are the future of telecommunication.

The only question is — which eSIM should you purchase? If you do not require voice call minutes (which I believe most wouldn’t), Airalo is your best bet. It has a lot of plan options to choose from, with validities as long as 180 days. It offers affordable local plans in as many as 200 countries, besides 7 regional plans and a value-for-money global plan. And since it partners with local network providers, you can rest assured of seamless connectivity as well.

If you do want to make voice calls and send text messages, Airhub should be your go-to option. It offers plans in more than 190 countries, with more than 15 plans to select from in most countries. Like Airalo, it is also a value-for-money proposition and wouldn’t cost you a fortune.

Comparison of eSIM for a trip to Greece

When comparing different eSIM brands we should take into account all the features that will determine if the card fits the needs of our trip. That’s why we prepared this table with all the essential information about each brand to help you choose. Later on we will go deeper into all the important details so you won’t miss any information.

1. Holafly, eSIM for Greece with Unlimited Data and customer support in English

Holafly is one of the best options to buy eSIM cards as all its plans have unlimited data for those who want to travel without worrying about running out of internet. In addition, the brand offers a 24/7 customer support service in Spanish , English, German, French, Italian and Japanese that responds in less than a minute by chat or WhatsApp, and is currently the company with the best customer rating on Trustpilot with a score of 4.6.

eSIM Greece

On Holafly ‘s website you can find 8 unlimited data plans ranging from 19€ to 99€ depending on the duration of the contract, which can be 5, 7, 10, 15, 15, 20, 30, 60 and 90 days. It is perfect for long stays, as well as for digital nomads or express trips to Greece. On their website you can also find a Europe-wide eSIM card that includes 32 countries so you can move from one country to another without having to change eSIMs.

The Holafly eSIM cards can be installed easily by scanning the QR code that you will receive by email once you have completed the purchase. The installation can also be done manually without the need for a computer, simply writing a code in the settings of your mobile that you can consult in the mail or in your App, which is very convenient to control the duration of the data plan.

After testing Holafly’s eSIM cards we can say that they are one of the most expensive options on the market, but that in the end they are profitable since all their plans have unlimited data and you will not need to recharge at any time during your trip. Here we leave you this ranking where we evaluate from 1 to 5 all the features of Holafly’s eSIM cards for Greece based on our experience.

In this post you can read about our experience with Holafly eSIM cards and some users’ opinions: Our review of Holafly eSIM: is it worth it?

2. Airalo, the cheapest eSIM brand for Greece

Airalo is along with Holafly one of the best-known brands in the world to buy an international travel eSIM. This company, founded in Singapore in 2019 by Turkish entrepreneurs Abraham Burak and Ahmet Bahadir Özdemir, was one of the first to offer these services, and has a wide coverage of countries where they offer eSIM cards.

Although Airalo is one of the cheapest brands on the market, the truth is that in the long run it can get expensive as their data plans have very limited gigabytes that can run out at any time, and their customer service takes a long time to respond.

eSIM Greece

Airalo’s eSIM card data plans for Greece have durations of 7, 15 and 30 days, and prices range from $5 to $49. They also offer an eSIM card for Europe that includes 39 countries. The brand has an App where you can buy and install the eSIM, and later recharge it when you run out of data.

Airalo’s eSIM for Greece offers 6 data plans so you can choose the one that best suits your trip. We compared customer reviews and feedback on Trustpilot and found that Airalo has one of the lowest scores of 3.7. Here you can find the ranking for each aspect of Airalo and in this post you can also read about our opinion of the brand: Our review of Airalo eSIM: is it worth it?

3. Truphone and their App

Truphone is a UK company that offers eSIM cards to connect to the internet in over 160 countries. It was a pioneer in the industry and the first global operator to launch eSIM for iPad, Apple Watch and Google Pixel devices . In addition, since 2016 it has been a technology partner of Apple , which grants it a great competitive advantage and makes it easier to install eSIMs on its devices.

For Greece the brand offers 6 plans; two with a duration of one day and 100MB and 1GB, and 4 other 30-day plans with 3GB, 5GB, 10GB and 20GB. Prices range from €5 to €35 . The 100MB plan is free for you to try their product for one day. The problem with this brand is that their data plans have very few gigabytes (maximum 20GB) and this means that you can run out of internet in the middle of your trip.

eSIM Greece

On the other hand, Truphone also offers eSIM plans for Europe that include 36 countries. It’s a good option if we are organizing a long trip across several countries.

Although on the website you can check the data plans and all the details about their eSIMs, to buy the eSIM card you will need to download the mobile application . Once downloaded, you will need to create an account filling in your details directly or through Google or Facebook. You can then choose the country and data plan you need for your trip and pay securely. A great advantage of the App is that it detects if your phone is compatible with the eSIM before allowing you to complete the purchase.

The installation and activation processes are done through the App , so you won’t need to scan any QR codes. Just keep in mind that you will need internet to perform the operation.

If you go to Trustpilot you can see that Truphone has over 100 reviews and a score of 1.9, one of the lowest among eSIM card providers. We have also rated the Truphone eSIM card based on our experience and these are our conclusions.

If you want to know more about our experience with Truphone eSIM cards and the opinions of other users visit this post: Our review of Truphone eSIM: is it worth it?

4. SimOptions y their marketplace

SimOptions is an eSIM card marketplace where local mobile carriers in each country sell their eSIM cards. The brand, with offices in Paris, Thailand and Hong Kong, offers data plans for eSIM cards in more than 160 countries and also have regional and global plans.

For Greece you will find four 14-day and 30-day data plans with data limits of 5GB, 8GB, 10GB and 20GB. Prices are a little higher than average and range from $17.9 to $49.9. With most plans you cannot top up the installed eSIM if you run out of data and there are only two eSIMs that include calls and SMS.

eSIM Greece

The main drawback of Sim Options is that its website is a bit chaotic and the data plans, being from different brands , are very disparate and their features vary a lot, not only price, speed or duration, but also technical support, rechargeability or data sharing. This will force you to look in detail at each brand and will make it harder for you to make a decision.

Our personal experience is that with SimOptions cards you waste a lot of time comparing between them. In addition, the price is high, you can only pay in dollars and they don’t give you the guarantee of a good technical support. Here we leave you this ranking where we rate SimOptions eSIM cards from 1 to 5 and in this post you can read about our opinion and that of other customers about the brand: Our review of Sim Options eSIM: is it worth it?

5. Maya Mobile, 30-day data plans for Greece

This company offers eSIM cards for 30 days in Greece . The price of the data packages in this case varies depending on the gigabytes. In total they have 5 packages of 1, 3, 5, 10 gigabytes, and another with unlimited gigabytes. The unlimited data plan is relative as the maximum browsing speed is 5Mbps and after having used 30GB of the plan, it drops to 1Mbps. The price ranges from 5€ to 45€.

eSIM Greece

Like Holafly, Maya Mobile is characterized by the speed and simplicity of its contracting and installation process, which is also done via a QR code that you receive by email. In addition, they have a 100% refund policy of the purchase in the event that the data does not work, which is not usually the case since they have at least two data providers in each country where they offer their services.

Maya Mobile also offers a Europe-wide plan that includes 30 countries and has unlimited data (with maximum speed of 5Mbps dropping to 1Mbps).

With Maya Mobile we consider their plans being very inflexible and only having a duration of 30 days a disadvantage. In Trustpilot you can see that the brand has an average score of 4.4, but there are hardly any comments. Here is the table with the score for each of the features of their eSIM cards.

Conclusion: what is the best eSIM for Greece

In this post we showed that there are many important factors to take into account when comparing eSIM cards since for each type of travel you will have different connection needs. That is why we prepared this section where we talk about our experience which eSIM card is best for Greece.

When we travel we don’t want to run out of data in the middle of our trip, that’s why eSIM cards with unlimited data are the best option . In this case, the only brands that offer unlimited eSIM data plans are Holafly and Maya Mobile, but remember that Maya Mobile’s unlimited data plans are not real, since after using 30GB the browsing speed will drop by half. With some companies like Airalo you can top up the eSIM already installed through their website or App, but the best thing is not having to pay again if you run out of data.

We know it can be tricky to calculate the gigabytes you’ll need during your trip, so we’ve prepared this table to help you make the estimate of the gigabytes you’ll need if you end up choosing an eSIM card with a data limit, which we don’t recommend.

The installation process of eSIM cards is always simple and fast , but it is true that there are some companies that make it even easier. The first thing is to check if your mobile is compatible with the eSIM of the brand. You can check this information on the website of each provider.

The purchase of the eSIM for Greece can be done through the web in the case of some brands such as Holafly or SimOptions , or through the app with Truphone. Holafly’s website is very intuitive and easy to use, while Simoptions’ is quite complicated to understand and you will have to read a lot.

The only brands that allow you to do the installation through the App are Airalo and Truphone , and in the case of Holafly, from the App you will be able to get the code to install the eSIM manually without using a computer. You can also do the installation by scanning a QR code that you will receive by email as soon as you have completed the purchase with Holafly, Airalo, Simoptions or Maya Mobile.

eSIM Greece

On the other hand, it is very important to consider the customer service to help you in the installation process and solve any doubt or problem. Most brands such as Maya Mobile or Airalo have a chat bot that takes a long time to respond and only does so in English. In the case of SimOptions, customer support will depend on the brand of eSIM card you have chosen. In this regard Holafly’s technical support is the best as they respond in less than 1 minute in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Japanese through the web chat or by WhatsApp, where a conversation is automatically opened after purchase.

holafly internet abroad

Many times when we travel we want to share data with other devices and only some providers like Airalo and some SimOptions brands make it possible.

But one of the most important aspects is price. The cheapest brands are Airalo and Maya Mobile , however, their data plans are very limited and you’re likely to run out and have to pay again with the top-up. That’s why it’s sometimes advisable to pay a little more and get a eSIM card with unlimited data like Holafly’s to give you peace of mind and avoid having to recharge again.

All in all, Holafly eSIM cards are the best choice for traveling to Greece for their unlimited data and multilingual technical support that responds in less than a minute. With Holafly you will never run out of data on your trip.

Other options for having internet in Greece?

There are several ways to get internet when traveling abroad, however, eSIM cards are our favorite option because of the number of advantages they offer which we are about to detail.

There are other alternatives to connect to internet in Greece that may also interest you. That’s why we have prepared this list with other options, their prices, advantages and disadvantages for you to compare and choose the one that best suits your trip.

1. Buy SIM cards from Cosmote ,  Vodafone Greece  and Nova

This was the most common option until eSIM cards appeared. When you arrive in Greece you can get a SIM card at the airport or in the commercial areas of the cities. There you will find stores of the main telephone companies such as Cosmote ,  Vodafone Greece  and Nova . Despite the fact that this is one of the most widespread methods to have internet, the truth is that it presents several disadvantages as we detail in this table.

The price of SIM cards varies greatly depending on the length of the contract and the gigabytes. A SIM for two weeks costs around €35.

2. Rent a Pocket WiFi for Greece

A Pocket WiFi is a wireless router that allows us to connect to the internet from any location. This system, which is considered one of the most expensive, has the following advantages and disadvantages.

Some of the best brands to rent Pockets Wifi in Greece are Travel Wifi and Wifivox. The plans are contracted per day or per month depending on the company. With Travel Wifi for example, the day costs between €8 and €12, depending on the gigabyte limit. Shipping costs, insurance, extra batteries or car chargers must be added to these fees.

With Travel Wifi you can choose where to receive and deliver the router at approved points or at the post office.

This system may not be cost effective for a short trip. This is why it is usually recommended for longer stays or business trips where the device will always be kept in one place and can be shared among several people.

3. Search for free WiFi networks in Greece

Greece is a very touristy destination where you will have no trouble finding free wifi hotspots in places like department stores, cafes, museums and hotels. However, the great disadvantage of public networks is their vulnerability to hacking. That is why it is recommended to limit their use to a minimum and avoid at all costs making transactions where your personal data might be compromised.

This option should be used with caution for security reasons. Public WiFi hotspots are very vulnerable to hacks or cyberattacks, providing access to private data. It is therefore recommended to spend as little time as possible connected, use it for specific queries and do not expose your personal data.

These are some places where you can find WiFi on your trip to Greece in case of a need: airports, museums, subway, parks, cafes, restaurants and hotels. There are also APPs that tell you where to find WiFi hotspots, as well as Facebook, which also offers this service.

4. Enable roaming for Greece

Data roaming is a service offered by phone companies to continue using your local data plan when traveling to Greece. The cost of this service is usually high, so it is advisable to check with your usual carrier before embarking on your trip, to avoid surprises at the end of the month.

However, residents of European Union countries can continue to use the data contracted in their country at no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions about how to have internet in Greece

eSIM cards allow you to have internet on your mobile phone when you travel abroad without having to remove your usual SIM card, as is the case with SIM cards. This is possible thanks to a chip that is built into the latest generation of mobile phones. The purchase of the eSIM data plan can be done through the website or the App of some brands. Choose your destination, the duration and the gigabytes of the data plan and pay securely.

The installation and activation of the eSIM is a really easy procedure that will only take a few minutes. Once you have verified that your mobile phone is compatible with the product and chosen the data plan that best suits your needs, go to the mobile data settings on your smartphone and select “add data plan”. The camera will then open so you can scan the QR code that you will have received in the mail after the purchase. The installation and activation of your card will then begin. This process must be carried out with an internet connection, which is why it is recommended that you do it before setting off on your trip or as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

Most models of popular brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Huawei or Google are compatible as long as they are recent models. Several iPads are also compatible. However, it is best to consult the website of each provider, where they will indicate all the compatible models.

SIM cards can be purchased in physical shops or online, with delivery times ranging from 48 to 72 hours. There are also companies that offer same day express delivery.

Most carriers offer packages with data limits. Holafly , unlike the rest, offers a wide variety of unlimited data packages.

It is best to activate it just before your trip as you will need an internet connection.

Data packages usually have a duration of 7 to 30 days, however, there are providers such as Holafly that offer more flexible packages between 5 days and 3 months.

Unlimited data plans do not normally allow data sharing, but plans with a specific number of GBs included do.

The data of the unlimited plans is really unlimited. Note in any case that local mobile operators may temporarily reduce the speed if you make a very intensive use of applications such as Netflix or Youtube. These limits are more intended to avoid network saturation by a few users.

Holafly is a Spanish company launched in 2018 that you can trust, it has been tested by more than 400,000 customers, travel blogs and Youtubers. Holafly has been marketing eSIMs since 2019.

Holafly has over 10,000 positive experiences published on Trustpilot, with a rating of “Excellent” and an average score of 4.6.

SIM Options has both positive and negative reviews, and a lower average Trustpilot rating than Holafly at 3.8. SIM Options is a Hong Kong based company.

Maya is owned by a US company, Maya Virtual Inc. Maya’s reviews on Trustpilot are good, with an average rating of 4.5.

Airalo reviews on Trustpilot are good, with an average score of 3.9.

The cost of data roaming can be high, depending on the rates given by your home network. An eSIM is a virtual SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from a carrier without having to use a physical SIM. Buying A SIM Card In Greece – Best Options For 2024

Everything you need to know about the best prepaid SIM card you can buy in Greece. Includes information on local operators in Greece, where to buy a Greece SIM card, what documents you need, available data packages and more.

How to buy a SIM card for Greece

How to buy a SIM Card for Greece

Where can I get a Greece SIM card? Tourists and expats traveling to Greece ask this question all the time, as they want to get a Greece SIM card for mobile broadband as soon as they arrive.

It’s hardly surprising! These days, it’s super important to stay connected with friends and relatives around the world. Not to mention posting all the amazing Greece photos from your holiday 🙂

The Herodion theatre in Athens

This guide to the prepaid SIM cards you can get for Greece is here to help. It includes information on:

  • the main providers in Greece
  • the various SIM plans and packages each provider offers
  • what documents you need to get a new SIM
  • where to get your Greek SIM card – stores, street vendors, the Athens airport
  • activating your SIM card and buying bundles
  • coverage, 4G and 5G in Greece
  • eSIM and tourist SIM information
  • why contract phones are not worth it, even if you are living in Greece.

Greece prepaid SIM card providers

There are three local providers in Greece: Cosmote , Vodafone Greece and Nova , formerly known as Wind. Each of these companies offer several types of prepaid SIM cards.

If you are only here for a few days or weeks, any Pay As You Go Greek SIM card you buy will be fine. Whichever operator you choose, your SIM will usually work well at popular destinations such as Athens , Santorini or Mykonos .

Generally speaking though, Cosmote has the best network coverage around Greece. So if you are planning to do lots of traveling in Greece, the best SIM card to get is probably Cosmote.

My top suggestion for the best Greek prepaid card to buy would be Cosmote Frog – if you can find it. This is the best SIM deal for Greece. Alternatively, go for either Cosmote WhatsUp, or Vodafone CU.

I have included more info on all these SIM cards later on in the article.

Greece SIM vs EU SIM

If you already have an SIM card from any EU country, there are no roaming charges. So, there is no real reason to get a Greek SIM if you are only here for a short time, unless you need a local phone number.

To be honest, most SIM cards from the EU (and often the UK) are better value than the Greek ones. Just make sure you are familiar with your provider’s fair usage policy. Plus, note that your EU SIM might not work perfectly everywhere.

Greece SIM vs overseas SIM

In my opinion, if you are visiting from outside the EU, you should definitely get a local SIM. Your provider (e.g. Verizon or T Mobile in the USA) will likely have overseas data plans. However, these will always be a lot more expensive, and may even end up in unexpected costs.

Also, while WiFi is very common in Greece, there will always be a time that you desperately need the Internet and it won’t be available.

A good example is when you are driving around Greece , or if you get lost walking around Ancient Athens . Even with downloading the offline Google Maps, it’s always best to actually have an internet connection.

Finally, a Greek SIM card can also come in handy if you want to book ferry tickets , train tickets, or just confirm your reservation with your hotel. As you will get a local number, you can easily use it for apps like Viber, WhatsApp etc.

What do I need to buy a prepaid Greece SIM card?

To buy a prepaid SIM card for Greece, you will need to show a valid ID document, such as a passport . Wherever you go to get your new card, the seller will either photocopy or take a photo of your passport – this is normal!

According to Greek legislation, you can only purchase a SIM card if you are over 18 years old . If your teenage children want their own SIM cards, you can buy two or more cards using the same passport.

Where to buy a SIM card in Greece

The best places to get your SIM card in Greece are either designated stores, or street vendors in the bigger cities. It’s possible to buy a SIM card at the Athens Airport, but it’s a lot more expensive.

To use your new card, you will need to have an unlocked phone. Some mobile phones come with a dual SIM option, so you can also use your original SIM if you prefer.

Buying a Greece SIM card in a store

All three providers have hundreds of shops across the country where you can easily get a new Greece SIM card. Cosmote SIM cards are also sold at a store chain called Germanos.

A view of Syntagma Square Athens

Here are some of the stores where you can get a SIM card for Greece around Syntagma Square and Plaka , close to the main shopping areas in central Athens:

  • Cosmote Syntagma Square – Mitropoleos 1
  • Cosmote Monastiraki – Athinas 45
  • Germanos Syntagma Square – Stadiou 10
  • Vodafone Syntagma Square – Stadiou 9
  • Vodafone Acropolis – Veikou 72
  • Nova Kolonaki – Patriarchou Ioakim 7
  • Nova Acropolis – Veikou 1

If you are starting your trip at Thessaloniki or one of the Greek islands, you can use Google Maps to find the nearest shop that sells SIMs.

Expect to pay about 10-15 euro to get your new SIM card, including some credit that will enable you to buy data packages, minutes or text bundles. More on this, later.

Getting a Greece SIM card from a street vendor

If you are in Athens, you can also get prepaid SIM card deals from street vendors. These cards are perfectly legitimate, and typically offer much better value than the SIM cards you would find at the stores.

Usually, these vendors have detailed boards out, explaining what they offer and how much it costs. In fact, they are probably the best place to get your SIM card for Greece 🙂

You can find these street vendors close to busy metro stations , such as Syntagma, Monastiraki, Omonia and Victoria. Most of them are young, and they speak at least some level of English as they often work with foreign visitors.

You can easily get a SIM card around Syntagma Square in Athens

And while it might feel strange having a random person on the street take a photo of your passport, you would still have to do the same thing if you went to a store.

Again, you can expect to pay around 10-15 euro for your new SIM card along with some credit which you can use to get a package. The difference is, you will typically get more GB / more minutes than a card you’d find in a shop.

Buying Greek SIM cards at the Athens International Airport

Some visitors would prefer to get hold of a Greece SIM card as soon as they’ve landed at the Athens International Airport. While this is possible, it won’t get you the best deal, plus you may have to face long queues.

Still, you can get a local SIM card at the airport in Athens. You will need to find the SIM LOCAL kiosk at the Arrivals Level, and check their current offers. In summer, their opening hours are usually 6.00-22.00 every day.

How to buy a SIM card at the Athens International Airport

At the time of writing, the only available option is a special travel pass Vodafone Greece package providing 15 GB of data, 200 minutes of calls to local numbers, and 120 minutes of calls to international numbers.

Along with the activation fee, this comes at a total price of 35 euros, which is rather steep when compared to the local services. Still, it’s an option if you want to be connected on the way to your hotel.

Related: Tips for taking the Athens airport metro

Buying a package for your new Greek SIM card

At the time you purchase your new SIM card, you will also need to buy some credit. The vendor will explain how to use your credit, and what packages are available.

You will then need to activate a package that suits your needs. I can’t stress this enough!

Unless you get a package, your credit will disappear in zero time! The easiest way to activate these packages is through an app which you will download on your mobile phone.

In summer, all providers offer unlimited GB deals that are valid for 30 days and cost about 11-13 euros. This is by far the best available deal you can get. You can just ask the seller to activate this, and you are done!

If you are visiting outside summer, you’ll have to check the available packages at the time. Generally speaking, you can buy a package with a certain number of GBs for a set period of time – a day, a week, or a month. Or you can buy a package which gives you both GBs and some minutes / SMS to local phone numbers.

A Cosmote store Greece

A quick overview of prepaid SIM cards for Greece

Let’s have a quick look at the prepaid SIM cards you are most likely to find in Greece.

Cosmote WhatsUp

I switched from a Cosmote contract to a Cosmote WhatsUp prepaid card a few years ago, and never looked back. Even if you move to Greece, contract phones are really not worth it in my opinion. Not only do they tie you to a 2-year contract, but they also work out to be more expensive.

With the WhatsUp package I spend an average of about 14 euro per month for all the GBs and minutes I need… and as I travel a lot around Greece, I need loads!

This SIM card offers many different bundles, including unlimited GB for 10.90 euro in summer. There’s also a DIY bundle that you can customize, and any unused data / minutes are carried over to the next month.

If you want a cheap data only SIM, this is a great option. However, there’s a catch: for the time being, the WhatsUp app is only in Greek, so you’ll need someone who speaks Greek to activate it and top it up. Customer service or street vendor can also do that for you.

You can find more info here (in Greek).

Cosmote Frog

In my opinion, Cosmote Frog is the best SIM card in Greece for tourists and expats. It uses the Cosmote network, offers slightly better value than Cosmote WhatsUp, and the app is also in English.

Unlike Cosmote WhatsUp, with Frog you only pay per second when making a call – which does make a difference. Plus, it gives you several different options for calls abroad.

In Athens, you can get the Cosmote Frog SIM at their flagship store. Their address is Stadiou 51 , very close to Omonia metro. Otherwise, you can always try the street vendors or perhaps order it here .

Overall, Cosmote Frog is not the easiest SIM card to find. Hopefully this will change in the future, as they have great customer service over messenger.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Frog .

Cosmote Cosmokarta

This service from Cosmote is more geared towards people who want to talk a lot. In my opinion, it doesn’t offer any benefits compared to the other Cosmote products, and prices can be higher.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Cosmokarta

SIM card for Greece Vodafone

Vodafone CU

This is another good option for visitors. In summer, they usually offer an unlimited data package valid for a month for 10.90 euro. Their app can be switched to English, so you can use it on your own. I’ve heard mixed opinions about their customer care, but I haven’t used them myself so I don’t have an opinion.

You can find more info here: Vodafone CU

Vodafone You

Offers fairly flexible bundles, but there’s no unlimited data option. If you are a traveler, Vodafone CU will probably suit you better.

You can find more info here: Vodafone You (in Greek)

Vodafone International

Another package from Vodafone Greece, which focuses on call minutes to several different countries. There’s a fairly good option for monthly data as well.

You can find more info here: Vodafone International (in Greek)

This is another option offering unlimited data for 10.60 euro in summer. There’s also a bundle for EU calls.

You can find more info here: Nova F2G

A good selection of bundles, including some with call minutes to international numbers. Unlike some other SIM cards, you only pay per second when making a call.

You can find more info here: Nova MyQ

Tips for expats and nomads staying longer in Greece

If you are only in Greece as a tourist, you initial credit should cover you for the duration of your trip. Your SIM card will remain active for a period of time, so if you are visiting again soon you can re-use it.

However, if you are planning to stay in Greece for a few weeks or months, you will need to top up your credit at some point. You can do it online with a credit card / PayPal, buy a scratch-card with credit at a periptero (kiosk), or top-up in a shop.

You can buy a top-up voucher for Greece at a kiosk

With most plans, you can carry any unused part of the package over to the next month, provided that you add some credit and renew your package before it expires.

It’s important to know that a tax is charged on any top-up voucher. For example, if you top up 13 euro, your balance will only be 11.81. Take that into account if you are planning to buy a package which costs over this amount.

And, in all circumstances, do not forget to buy a new bundle – otherwise, your new credit will run out super quickly!

Also, have a look at this guide with helpful websites for expats in Greece .

Things to know about network coverage in Greece

While 4G (and, sometimes, 5G coverage) is available in Greece, in practice you might experience a slow connection. In fact, the speed of your mobile data can vary a lot, depending on your exact location.

Some carriers work better than others in certain areas – so if you are planning to stay somewhere for long, ask your neighbors what provider they are using. On the whole, Cosmote is probably the most reliable one.

If you are visiting remote islands like Nisyros , Kalymnos or Tilos , or even upcoming islands like Milos , don’t expect to have signal 24/7.

Reception can be affected by weather conditions, such as the meltemi winds . Yes… I’m talking from experience!

Remote areas in Greece don't have good Internet connection

It’s also a good idea to ensure that your cell phone is NOT on automatic network selection. If you are traveling to the Dodecanese islands, like Rhodes or Kos , your phone can automatically log on to Turkish networks, and you can easily lose any remaining credit.

Last, but not least – it is possible to use your phone as a hotspot for all your devices. I have done this many times on various islands where the WiFi was slow, and found that an unlimited data SIM was very useful.

Note that this option might not be able to support some services, such as streaming videos or making a video call. But it still might be useful if the Wi Fi signal is poor.

Using an eSIM / International SIM card in Greece

There are a bunch of International SIM cards / travel SIM cards out there that frequent travelers like to use.

In addition, if your phone supports an eSIM option, you can use an eSIM instead of buying a card in Greece. This will save you some time as you won’t have to find a shop and go through the procedure.

These are some of the companies that I am aware of which come highly recommended. Note that these SIM deals are generally more expensive than a Greek SIM card:

  • Trip Roaming

As I haven’t used an eSIM in Greece yet, I don’t have a personal opinion. If you’ve used any of these, or any others, please comment below with your experience!

FAQs about SIM cards in Greece

Here are a few questions about Greece SIM cards often asked by visitors:

You should expect to pay around 10-15 euros for a Greek SIM card along with some credit which you can use to buy a bundle of data / calling minutes.

Which SIM card is best in Greece?

There are three Greek providers, Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova. While they all offer similar packages, Cosmote has slightly better coverage. The best SIM cards in Greece are Cosmote Frog, Cosmote WhatsUp, and Vodafone CU.

How do you get a Cosmote SIM card?

To buy a Cosmote prepaid package, you will need to go to a Cosmote or a Germanos store. Alternatively, you can also buy it from a street vendor. Eitherway, you will need your passport. There is no shop at the Athens airport.

hi we have a mobile dongle for our house in Greece with the price of data card on the uk can you recommend witch is the best Greek company to get e data sim card thanks M Thompson

In my experience, Cosmote has the best coverage in Greece, so I suppose it would be the same for esims.

Hi, I am grateful to rich information over SIM-card in Greece, but I am wondering if these offers have some kind deal of 100minutes free call and so on??? In hotel, data volume is not a problem at all but the calls are really a headack, right?

Second, no travellers in Greece will only stay there for the whole holiday months (normally two months or more) and will move to other countries such as Italy, France, UK or Danmark. I would like to know which prepaid SIM (first arrival country) can be used in these countries as enough money is re-charges when on the way travelling?

Unfortunately, Greece has the worst deals. You can use any EU SIM card in any EU country, the UK is a bit different but as far as I know it depends on the provider and how new the SIM card is (e.g. my Greek SIM card which I’ve had for several years works fine in the UK, I believe that the same deal won’t work for new cards but I might be wrong). You could get a SIM card in your country of entry (EU) and then see how it works in the other countries. Hope this helps!

Do you know if there a shop in Piraeus where I can get a Greek SIM Card?

I’ll be staying at the Achillion Hotel and prefer a Cosmote card.

Hi – yes there’s one 2 minutes from your hotel – Iroon Polytechneiou 42-44 🙂

  • Did you receive any SMS after you installed the eSIM. If so, please send us a screenshot of that message.
  • Message us screenshots of any error message you are getting.
  • What phone model you are using?
  • Any other information about the issue, which will assist us in helping you resolve the issue.

How do I make calls and send SMS?

Firstly please check that the number you are dialling is a Standard Landline or Mobile . Premium rate or Business rate numbers are NOT  included in the Unlimited Minutes. SMS/Texting is also NOT included

You must always use the correct prefixes and international dialing conventions as noted below whenever making a call to a local number.

  • 00 (Country Code) (Area Code) (Number)  or  + (Country Code) (Area Code) (Number)
  • If calling a  French  number, you must use their country code which is 33 for example, in front of the number.
  • For Landlines: 00 - 33  - Area Code - Land Phone Number Or + 33  - Area Code - Land Phone Number and/or
  • For Mobiles: 00 - 33  - 9 Digit Mobile Number (for calling)

If you need to call a rental company or tour provider, it is recommended to check with them before you depart for the correct international dialling conventions and to ensure it is standard local rate number.

If you are unsure please contact us before you depart at  [email protected]  or send us a message via the " Contact Us " page and we can let you the correct prefix.

How do my family and friends call and message me?

For example, if the phone number noted on the pack is 6 60 66 00 01, they would need to dial +33 6 60 66 00 01. (To get the + on a mobile phone, press and hold 0 until it turns into a +)

Please Note: If someone from outside of France wishes to call or SMS you directly they would be charged at international rates to a French number. Some of your family and friends may have international calling as part of their phone plans to French numbers, but others may not be able to make direct international calls or sms.

We recommend that you stay in touch with your family and friends by sending them messages and calling them via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype, iMessage etc.

If I buy two eSIMs (one for myself and my partner) can we contact each other?

I am travelling with my friends and family, how do I contact them?

What is your refund policy?

However, you MUST contact us whilst you are having the issue, so our team can assist you in resolving your problems.
