Back in the days before indulgent dining, hip hotels and world-class day spas, Bali was a destination reserved for intrepid travellers, most of whom came toting a surfboard. These days, surf shops still persevere with their simple living ethos, while big brand stores like Rip Curl and Billabong now compete against a new army of boutiques offering grassroots brands and a next-level customer experience. Food lovers come in masses to taste the famous pork fried rice and Balinese chicken rice, the famous lamb dish known as ‘Rawon’, and a green curry called ‘Soto. Krisna Bali Souvenir Shop

All items are sold at fixed prices but it is always worth trying your luck at bargaining for a lower price. The store is open 7 days a week from 8 in the morning to 10 in the night time. They have a store in Denpasar and Singaraja as well.

Jalan Legian Lane

Heading to one of the most crowded markets in Kuta, the Jalan Legian Lane has a name for its vibrant nightlife and party atmosphere. Apart from various lively clubs and bars, there are many options for people who are here for shopping. Whilst you rummage around the many stalls searching for hidden gems, their friendly staff are on hand to help you score that perfect bargain. Not only a fun day out for some serious shopping, it’s also a great place to hang out with friends and grab some shots for the Gram at their various photo-op areas. And no need to worry if you run out of cash, as there is an ATM on standby in case you need to top-up the funds! This purpose-built space also has its own generous parking area – perfect in case you need to order a Grab Car to help get all those bargains back to your villa. Sukawati Art Market

This traditional-style market houses plenty of authentic goods that your family at home is sure to appreciate (but don’t forget to buy some goods for yourself, too). Shops and peddlers along the lanes have plenty to offer, and it’s up to you to decide which goods are coming home. Of course, there’s the occasional fridge magnet, but that’s not what makes this place so special. It’s the beaded bracelets, beautiful wall art and real leather bags that caught our attention. Oh my! Kites, sarongs and paintings with a novel twist are all worth admiring.

Head to the back of the Sukawati Art Market for things like sandalwood oil, incense and other aromatic treats. Don’t be surprised to find unique bedding with abstract patterns and pictures on it (like wild birds or the face of John Lennon).

Thanks to the market being in the less-touristy region of Sukawati, you can expect honest and affordable prices, but we still recommend negotiating for the best deal. Don’t be afraid to chat with the locals at this market in Bali as you make your way through the stalls.

Kuta Art Market

Bold beaded necklaces, waste-free totes, and wooden instruments are just some of the staples you’ll find at this Kuta landmark. Of course, Bali keychains and tees abound here. But these souvenirs are not the only goods you’ll find. Whatever the handicraft or souvenir, you’ll definitely have a blast browsing through the stalls in the Bali sun. Just steps from the beach, it’s laid out like a bazaar. Brand-name surfing apparel joins kitschy kids clothing for an eclectic array of buying opportunities. 

There are plenty of items to choose from, making it easy to get sucked into all seven shophouses. Cottage industries and local craftspeople sell their creations at this Bali Market, so it’s worth a good browse. Have fun trying on sun hats, sarongs and more. 

Feel free to negotiate a price with the friendly shopkeepers. When you get hungry (which you inevitably will), simply head to one of the many beachside food stalls at the Kuta Art Market, selling yummy smoothies and warm Bali eats.

Kumbasari Art Market

This is a place that allows you to search for the magic. A Denpasar staple, the Kumbasari Art Market is teeming with colorful, affordable goods. Finding the perfect gift is easy here, which you can probably attribute to the fact that there’s more than a thousand stalls across the market (all of which open at varied times, by the way). 

Kumbasari Art Market is so big that it actually houses two floors. It’s right in the heart of Denpasar, so you can easily pair this with a visit to the island’s capital city.

Hundreds of kiosks and more than a thousand stalls comprise the market, where people have been slinging colorful offerings since 1977. Unfortunately, a fire burned it down in 2000, but it reopened a year later and still thrives today as a popular market in Bali. It’s perfect for anyone hoping to buy in bulk, or individuals after a good deal while on holiday.

We recommend sifting through the Balinese fabrics, sarongs, sculptures and ornaments if you know what’s good for ya’. If you want a good Bali t-shirt or a pair of sandals for the warm weather, the Kumbasari Art Market has got it. One more thing: with all the prices so reasonable, you’ll easily be tempted to buy a lot. Don’t forget to negotiate the best deal and bring a bag to tote all those gifts and souvenirs!

The Flea Market

Talk about a high-quality array of eye-catching products! You can find The Flea Market in Seminyak, right by the beach in Jalan Oberoi. The whole thing is covered, which makes it perfect for a rainy-day outing. As for what you’ll find here, think handmade leather products and unique articles of clothing. Nothing is made for the masses, but everything is made with love and care of the island kind.

Take note though that this is not the place to come if you are looking to buy bulk Bali bargains. If you are however looking for some quality products from the island, you will understand why we think this is one of the best markets in Bali!

Open until late in the evening we find it best to shop here after sunset when it is much cooler under cover. Bartering is expected here but the prices will reflect the quality of the goods.

Sindhu Beach Market

Next time you’re in Sanur, take a walk toward Sindhu Beach. Here, you’ll find a place called Benno’s Restaurant. Behind it lies a long alleyway of market stalls selling everything from wood carvings and Christmas decorations to clothing and accessories.

The shopkeepers have a habit of striking up conversation with every passerby. Sanur is not as busy at Kuta and Legian so these stalls have to work extra hard to get business. It’s not uncommon for shopkeepers to wait on the beach path and follow you along asking if you will look in their shop. If you have no interest in shopping it is best to say “no thank you” right from the start. If you tell them something like “maybe later” they will tend to follow and wait for you until you until you come to their shop.

You can expect quite cheap prices here if you are prepared to barter. It’s best to keep this all in good nature, remember they are only doing their job by bartering with you for goods and calling you into their shops. If you have no idea where to start with bartering prices you can head to “No Bullshit Jenny Shop”. This is just down from Benno’s restaurant (into the alley way of markets) and has a large sign out the front. Jenny was one of the first market owners to start a “fixed price shop” in the market areas. Although it was not popular with her fellow market holders it is great for tourists. This shop will give you a guide on how much you should be paying for items in this area. Jenny has a large range of clothes, accessories, bags, sunglasses, cushions, bedspreads and more!

Seminyak Square Market

Jalan Oberoi’s Eat Street in Seminyak has a lot to offer, and the markets in Seminyak Square are just some of them. You will not find your Bintang singlets and board shorts here. Instead, you’ll find trendy clothing for women, not the least of which are gorgeous kaftans, stylish jumpsuits and unique accessories. There is also a range of kid’s wear, including some dress-up costumes as well. There is a small range of sunglasses, accessories and homewares to choose from too.

You may find the prices to be higher than Kuta counterparts, but you pay for what you get (quality!). Keep in mind that this destination closes the curtains at 5:30 pm each night, so it’s not the place to go for nighttime shopping. You can also combine shopping here with a visit to Seminyak Village (a fancy shopping centre just next door).

Poppies 1 & 2

Kuta is one of the most affordable regions for shopping in Bali. Poppies 1 & 2 are the street names for a couple of killer markets in Bali. You can access them from Ground Zero or the Kuta beach front. Bintang shirts, board shorts, jumpsuits, dresses, bags, sunglasses, artwork, wood carvings, DVDs, wallets, shoes, these streets have it all. Browse first and haggle second, but you’re sure to find a brag-worthy bargain ’round these parts.

You need to barter hard here. It’s best to spend some time just browsing before you head into negotiations. Often when you are just browsing the shopkeepers will start to drop prices just to keep your interest. When you walk past the clothes markets they will often say something like “nothing in the shop over $5”, of course this means if you were to buy more than one item you can negotiate for less.

Be warned this can be an intense place to shop, once you are walking down the lane the only way in or out is to walk past more markets. For people who get irritated by being harassed to “come look in my shop” you may find this area a little overwhelming. For true Bali bargain hunters these markets are for you!

Garlic Lane Market

It’s time to head to Legian , just between Jalan Padma and Melasti. The markets in Garlic Lane are known for their low prices, thanks in part to the number of fixed-price shops settling down here. Walk along the streets and take a peek into any market stall that strikes your fancy. Whether you’re after bags or trinkets, it’s a souvenir lover’s paradise!

You definitely need to explore this lane way on foot and pop in and out of the many market stalls on offer. If you are not into bartering find yourself on of the fixed price shops (you will see it say “fixed price” below the name of the shop on the sign out the front). If you like a good old barter you will have lots of fun here.

There is pretty much everything on offer – clothes, shoes, bags, DVDs, sunglasses, wallets, souvenirs and more! The markets stay open until late in the evening and open around 10am.

Double Six Markets

These markets nearby  Double Six Luxury Hotel  make for a seriously enjoyable outing. Soak up all the beauty in the form of jewellery, fashion and handbags. Expect to head beyond the knockoffs into truly unique territory. Amp up your island style with sandals crafted from quality leather. The double six market offers a relaxed environment with shop owners who are easy to talk to brings this spot to the forefront. Rest assured they know if they have something unique that can’t be purchased at other stalls and they will expect a price to match.

Most taxis and drivers will know this street as Double Six, however on Google maps it is actually Jalan Arjuna. Towards the end of Double Six there is a one way street that is called Jalan Werkudara – it is worth spending sometime walking down this strip also. There are a couple of really interesting clothing stores and a great fixed price home wares store that features the coloured Buddhas, wall hanging, and lots of other gorgeous bits and pieces.

Customers and vendors are almost exclusively locals. Be careful though, the place is not the cleanest and the atmosphere can be oppressive, especially if you are traveling alone.

If the material is more important to you than style, ensure you’re truly buying a rattan bag. Rattan is hard to paint, so brightly painted bags are unlikely to be rattan but straw or seagrass. 

Where to buy: Handbags will be everywhere on the side of the road in tourist areas. Ubud is the best place to buy authentic rattan, as Seminyak has some “fake” ones. 

How much: in small villages and less tourist areas, it can be 30-50K (USD 2), but in a boutique, it can be up to 500K (USD 33), depending on size and design.

Something that you will catch up among the first things in Bali will be this gentle, warm aroma that follows you everywhere and fills up the streets. 

Incense is a big part of daily ceremonial offerings for Balinese people, and burning and waving incense symbolizes the presence of Gods and spirits.

It is the perfect souvenir for yoga and meditation enthusiasts, as well as for spa sessions.

Where to buy: local market or organic shops and markets for foreigners like Bali Buddha or Utama Spice. 

Balinese people take big pride in their coffee history and production. 

Kintamani region in Bali produces good arabica, robusta, and the most expensive coffee in the world – Kopi Luwak or Luwak coffee.

While arabica and robusta are well known and respected by coffee lovers, coffee Luwak has a controversial reputation.

To produce Luwak coffee, little furry animals called civets or Luwaks have to eat and poop the coffee beans that will be later collected and prepped. 

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all tourist spots are sustainable and do not mistreat animals. 

Where to try: Kintamani coffee shops with amazing views of Mount Batur or at Cafe F.R.E.A.K in Ubud. For Luwak coffee, visit the plantations around Gianyar, such as, ‘Mas Plantations and luwak coffee’.

Insider tip :

Be careful not to get fake Luwak coffee. Real Luwak beans are from wild, not caged animals, are uniform, and have an herbal, leafy smell more like green tea. They don’t smell like regular coffee and taste weaker and nuttier. 

By visiting some beaches on the East coast of Bali,, you can see how sea salt was traditionally produced and learn about the process directly from local farmers.

Where to find: small local farms around Kusamba beach for an improvised tour – Garam Organik Uyah Kusamba .

To buy a small bag, go to organic shops like Bali Direct.

Have your local friend accompany you, as farmers do not usually speak English.

Bali’s fertile soil is amazing for growing (and exporting) some of the best vanilla in the world. 

You can buy fresh vanilla or some products here directly from producers and even visit a vanilla farm.

Using fresh vanilla beans, you can make your own vanilla extract by submerging them in vodka for a few months. This is amazing for baking and doesn’t compare with store-bought vanilla.

Where to find: for tours – Bali Vanilla Farm , to buy vanilla beans and vanilla-infused products – Nature Pods .

Custom or premade leather shoes, boots, jackets, and bags will make an amazing gift from Bali. Balinese artisans mostly use cow leather, suede, goatskin for clothing and snakeskin for shoes and bags. 

Faux leather is now also available in Bali made of synthetic materials. 

Where to buy: Seminyak Leather Bali or small local artisan shops in Legian, Ubud, Semiyak that don’t usually have a name. Azam’s Leather in Canggu. 

How much: from 1.2 million IDR for a pair of sandals (USD 76).

Natural deodorants, Balinese natural soaps, organic toothpaste, and skincare are very popular in Bali. Local brands source the best ingredients that grow in Bali and, through sustainable processes, create great products for your skin and hair. 

Some of the absolute favorites are the Elixir serum from Mademoiselle Kelapa, facewashes from Sensatia Botanical, and products from Utama Spice.

To buy chocolate, visit special shops like Raw Ubud, Sacred Cacao, and Slab Crafted Chocolate, or you can find brands like Pod and Krakakoa chocolate in Pepito/Frestive supermarkets.

To make your own chocolate head to Primo Chocolab Bali in Tabanan (book directly or through Airbnb). The price is 750K IDR per person (approx USD 49).

In Bali and Java, you can either make your own plates and cups or buy them from local handymen. You’ll find many of the things you might want, from classic dining pieces to very creative vases and cups.

Where to buy: Local shops. Kevala shop and workshops. Tegallalang village.

Bali is a true paradise for those obsessed with home decor and interior design. Handmade items of wood, coconut shell, rattan, ilang ilang, seagrass, stone, and other natural materials are affordable, stylish, and unique.

Bowls with mother of pearl inside, stacker for keys, carved skulls, handmade dream catchers, bamboo food holders and straws, coasters, brass fittings, woven baskets…the list goes on!

Where to find: The best place to shop for these is the markets in less touristy areas unless you are willing to pay a hefty price markup. Ubud is well-known for all sorts of handicrafts, but you can also find them in Semiyak.

Shells make a beautiful souvenir for ocean lovers, and are also easiest on the wallet! The biggest and prettiest ones can be found on smaller islands around Bali, like on the white sandy beaches of Nusa Lembongan. 

You can take 1 or 2, but let’s leave most of them for hermit crabs!

Balinese cuisine is full of flavors and spices that locals master flawlessly. 

We highly recommend taking a cooking class in Ubud to bring home some recipes and surprise your friends and family with dinner. 

The spices that grow and are most commonly used in Bali are ginger, shallot, garlic, galangal, turmeric, coriander, black and white pepper, cumin, clove, nutmeg, sesame seeds, chili, lemongrass, kafir lime, and candlenut.

Probably the most popular use for many herbs and spices is the famous Balinese paste called bumbu or a spicy mix of chili peppers called sambal , which goes perfectly with meat. Buy a jar to bring back home!

If you source it from the village, there is a great chance it was made by hand over a few days in a long and tedious process.

Where to buy: local markets, regular supermarkets, village street stalls.

Balinese artisans create intricate hand-made macrame wall art, hammocks, and plant pot holders that you can easily pack in your suitcase. They are often milky white with nice wooden hangers, but can also be custom-made.

Where to find: Markets or online shop Macrame Agung Keramat.

How much: from USD 4 for a dream catcher or USD 19 for a wall piece.

Foodies should try to taste as many local treats as they can! Some flavors are super unique, like nutty sweet and spicy crackers, fried bananas, tofu crackers, Pie susu (milk pies), Pia Legong (stuffed pastry), spicy peanuts, etc.

One of the local’s favorites is a cup noodles brand – Indomie. For a healthier snack, buy some local cashews! 

Where to buy: Markets. Pie susu from Pie Susu Enaak – original flavor, chocolate, and cheese are worth trying! Pia Legong Bali shop.

In Bali, it’s worth visiting the northern regions to shop for coffee and strong liquors. The most famous Balinese alcohol is Arak, which is fermented coconut sap.  

A couple of distilleries offer tours to explain and show the process, mainly in the Karangasem and Batukaru areas in Bali. Karusotju Distillery offers a tasting experience and has a shop, which is located in a picturesque area. 

If you are not into strong alcohol, you should try locally brewed beers! Black Sand Brewery, South East Brewery, Island Brewing, and Kura Kura beers can be found in Canggu and around, but there are also more exotic fruity beers by IOI Brewery you should definitely try.

• Beer tours + BBQ at IOI brewery is 295K IDR (USD 19) per pax ( RSVP ), 
• Beers in Black Sand is from 45K IDR per can (USD 2.9). 
• Tasting at Karusotju is 150k/person IDR (USD 10). 

Note : Under no circumstances should you ever accept homemade arak-based drinks from strangers or in a bar you’re at for the first time. A bad batch can have serious health consequences, including blindness.  

The most popular health drink in Bali is Jamu . It is a powerful herbal tonic and immune booster. It usually includes turmeric, ginger, galangal, tamarind, and peppercorns. You can order one to be made or buy it on the market or in a supermarket (commercially produced).

Balinese men and women wear traditional outfits for ceremonies. They are called kebaya and can be quite simple or very elegant and intricate (and more expensive). It is a skirt, shirt, and fabric belt for women and a wraparound skirt, fabric belt, and headpiece for men. 

How much: A simple set will be under 200k IDR. 

It can catch you by surprise, but many travelers bring home something on their bodies – Bali-inspired tattoos! Some tattoo ideas include traditional handpoke tattoos or tattoos of Bali symbols such as the plumeria flower, sunset, Barong, etc. 

Where to get: Handpoke tattoos , western-style tattoo studios – Baba Yaga, Koloni. 

One of the most symbolic things to get in Bali comes through a shaman visit or purification ceremony – a bracelet with three threads: red, black, and white. 

For Balinese, Tridatu means the sacred trinity of Brahma (the creator), Visnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). The belief is that the bracelet gives protection, and you should wear it until your wish comes true. 

If you are into spirituality, spend a few days in Ubud, attend yoga and breathwork classes, and make like-minded friends. 

You can also buy protective crystals, water bottles with charged crystals, and smaller healing stones. 

Where: shops in Ubud, for example, in Parq Ubud, and Amethysta shop in Canggu.

You may think nobody buys magnets while on trips, but many parents and grandparents love them and proudly collect them to show to their guests.

Be creative and pick some original ones. As Bali is a surfing destination, you can pick one shaped like a surfboard.

Magnets are available for sale along all main tourist streets in Bali (Seminyak, Berawa, Batu Bolong).

Traditional theatrical performances telling the story of Bali always use dancing, Balinese music, and flat cut-out shadow puppets called Wayang Kulit .

They are commonly made of leather and you can buy some of the puppets representing mythological or spiritual characters.

Teak and rattan furniture, antiques, art, and musical instruments can also be amazing collectibles and souvenirs from Bali.

For music lovers, there are a few traditional musical instruments you may be interested in such as metallophones with drums ( gamelan) , bamboo flutes ( suling ), and drums ( kendang ).

They are often quite large and require sea/plane shipping, which will cost much more.

Approximate cost: Antiques and furniture can be quite expensive. For shipping costs: 1 cubic meter with sea shipping to the port starts from USD 360.

You can buy many entertaining things in Bali and gift them as a farewell present or bring them home.

The most popular are T-shirts with the local beer brand logo – Bintang, or “Nasi Goreng” written on them, a traditional fried rice dish in Indonesia.

• If you’d like to say “thank you”, use Indonesian word Terima kasih [trimakasi] or Balinese word Matur Suksema [matur suskma]
• It is common to bargain as the real prices are often up to 50-75% lower than the price you will be given. 
• Use Google Translate as most vendors, especially in less popular areas, do not speak English. Learn a bit of Indonesian with Duolingo. 
• Get a tote bag and carry it around in case you will go shopping. It is also easier to care for a tote bag – just wash it. 
• Shopping in small local shops and markets is easier with cash. International cards often also have 2-3% additional processing fees. However, to get cash, please only use official money changers, not those that look like sheds on the sidewalks. Unfortunately, they can be scams.
• Do a quality check before handing money over, as markets don’t have return and refund policies. This is very important for wooden crafts – termites can get to them, so inspect for any small holes and wooden “dust.”
• Make sure you have space in your luggage and can bring an item out of Indonesia and into your own country. 

One thing is certain—it doesn’t matter if you miss something from this list. You will surely bring home amazing memories of beautiful sunsets, the aroma of incense, rice field views, new friendships, and tons of stunning photos.

Watch A Kecak Dance Performance

Kecak dance is a captivating traditional Balinese dance performed daily in the open at various prominent venues across the city, including temples, theaters, and public centers. The dance is typically performed by a group of men, around 50, dressed only in a loincloth, with the upper body exposed. What’s unique about the Kecak dance is that there are no musical instruments to accompany the dance, just a rhythmic chorus from the men, led by a soloist, allowing the audience to focus on the gracefulness of the craft.

You must enter the water fully clothed, wearing a sarong and sash, and it's best to explore the temple complex first, as you are not allowed to drip water in the courtyards.
