Best Cambodia SIM Card: What You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated May 13, 2024 | Asia , Cambodia , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Cambodia soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Cambodia SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Cambodia in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Cambodia. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Khmer – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Cambodia.

Best Cambodia SIM Card For Tourist

If you’re traveling in Cambodia, we recommend using a SIM card from Smart, Metfone, Cellcard, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Asia, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Cambodia

You can buy a Cambodia prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Asia prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Smart, Metfone, and Cellcard.

Planning your upcoming adventures? Travel by bus! (It's cheap!)

Lotus Farm, Cambodia

Smart SIM Card For Tourists

Smart offers the Smart Traveller plan to tourists, which includes:

  • 30 GB of data, unlimited calls & texts online, valid for 7 days for USD 5

Metfone SIM Card For Tourists

Metfone is the largest mobile network in Cambodia and offers the following data-focused plans:

  • 200 MB data, valid for 1 day, for USD 0.20
  • 1.5 GB data, valid for 7 days, for USD 1.50
  • 3 GB data, valid for 30 days, for USD 3
  • 5 GB data, valid for 30 days, for USD 5
  • 12 GB data, valid for 30 days, for USD 10

Cellcard SIM Card For Tourists

Cellcard offers three main SIM-only plans for tourists:

  • 4 GB, valid for 7 days, for USD 2
  • 8 GB, valid for 30 days, for USD 5
  • 18 GB, valid for 30 days, for USD 10

Overall, we think Cellcard is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Cambodia Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Prepaid Asia-Pacific SIM Card works in more than 17 countries and gives you unlimited data for 14 days. Cambodia is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid Asian SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer one data plan in Cambodia.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Cambodia or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for Asia.

How To Buy An eSIM For Cambodia

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards, it’s definitely one of the best options for getting data in Cambodia.

To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIM for Cambodia.

Airalo Cambodia

If you want to buy an eSIM for Cambodia, you could purchase one on Airalo .

This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Asia and Cambodia.

I’ve been using Airalo for several years, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9.50
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days $21
  • 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $32

airalo cambodia esim

Here’s an overview of the options available for Asia :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Asialink and offer coverage in 14 countries, including Cambodia.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Cambodia.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $17
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 60 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Cambodia

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Cambodia or even an eSIM for your travels in Cambodia is pretty straightforward. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Cambodia if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Best Cambodia Tourist Sim Card Prepaid Mobile Internet Data

Choose the Most Suitable Cambodia Unlimited Data Sim Card for Travel

1. Cambodia Mobile Providers ① Cellcard Tourist SIM Card ② Smart Traveller SIM Card ③ Metfone Tourist SIM Card ④ Seatel Travel SIM Card 2. Choosing the Most Suitable Cambodia Tourist Sim Card for Travel

Thinking of buying a Cambodia SIM card when you travel to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh? Here is one of the travel tips on choosing the best Cambodia Prepaid SIM Card with unlimited internet data. BONUS : A price comparison table among them.

As of the latest research in January 2022, there are 5 mobile carriers in Cambodia – Metfone, Smart Axiata, CellCard, Seatel and CooTel (CDMA network. The telco company, qb seemed to have closed down as their website was no longer valid). The first three companies listed are the largest mobile operators in Cambodia with a 90% market share. It and also the preferred choice among travellers. Since CoolTel is on a CDMA network, we will not use it to make a comparison among the rest of the 3G and 4G LTE networks.

Generally, the internet data network in Cambodia is excellent except for some places which you may not get any signal such as the Angkor Archaeological Park . Like most tourists, we want to get ample internet data volume on our mobile phone more than anything else, such as phone calls and SMS. One need not save money on the prepaid SIM card in Cambodia because the mobile operators offer one of the most affordable and competitive tourist SIM cards in the market that I have come across.

I travelled to Siem Reap recently with my family. Each of us bought a Cambodia SIM card from the mobile phone booth at Siem Reap International Airport (RER). We saw Metfone, Smart Axiata and Seatel just outside Siem Reap Airport when we stepped out before going to the city centre .

5 Cambodia Mobile Providers

1. cellcard tourist sim card.

I was aiming to buy our Cambodia SIM card from Cellcard after some online research. However, I did not see any CellCard counter after exiting the airport, but I read that some people bought it successfully at Siem Reap. The phone booth was actually at the far end of the airport.

Cellcard Tourist SIM Pack costs US$6, valid for 7-days of use. You get 5GB data and US$50 of call time daily, which is their marketing approach on data and calls. To add the cherry on the cake, Cellcard has been awarded as the ‘ Fastest Mobile Network in Cambodia ’ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain for four consecutive years since 2016.

2. Smart Traveller SIM Card

Nonetheless, between Metfone and Smart, we selected the Smart Traveller SIM valid for 7 days at US$3 for 20GB data and US$1.50 worth of call time. As you can see from the photos below, the Smart shop at Siem Reap Airport also offered 5 more packages from US$6 to US$20. One advantage of Smart outsmarting its competitors was to be the first telco in 2017 to roll out the 4.5G LTE network in Cambodia !

Unfortunately, the detail shown on the photos taken from the airport differed from that on its current website, which displays a better offer of more internet data volume. The website also offers a free SIM card which has 10 minutes of call value and 100Mb data.

Smart Axiata and Metfone Shops outside Siem Reap Airport

3. Metfone Tourist SIM Card

Even though Metfone was offering more internet data volume at 33GB at US$3 for 7-day validity, the downside was that I didn’t see it offering free call time nor SMS with their tourist sim package. Since I was travelling with my family members, having the option to call and send SMS would be better.

Metfone’s strength of marketing was that they offered Unlimited Data Internet for 7 days in Thailand, Laos and Malaysia . Definitely a good bargain if you are hopping over to one of the three countries anytime soon. Over at Metfone’s website , I did not see any Tourist SIM card offer. Metfone has a few prepaid card offers, but they are more for long term usage, especially for making phone calls.

Metfone "Unlimited Data Internet" for Thailand, Malaysia and Laos outside Siem Reap Airport

4. Seatel Travel SIM Card

The smaller mobile operator, Seatel has a different but simple approach. Seatel Travel SIM offers unlimited data and calls for 3 days (US$3), 5 days (US$5) and 10 days (US$10). To check airtime credit, dial 1800*11*.

Cambodia SIM Card Comparison Table

Here is a summary table at a glance of what you can get with this amount. The information displayed for Smart is according to the photos taken in Siem Reap Airport as the prepaid card costs on the website is not the same as what was offered at Siem Reap Airport.

» Our Smart Tourist SIM Review

Our Smart Tourist SIM cards worked very well in the city, fast and had strong signals, thanks to the 4.5G network. However, there was no signal in the Angkor temples area for all our four mobile phones. My tuk-tuk driver told me to use Cellcard instead, as it is the most preferred network used here. Moreover, he said that he was using Cellcard and had no problem with his mobile signal.

On the other hand, some who bought Cellcard and also claimed that they did not have connections around the Angkor temples too. The problem does not lie with the mobile phone operators. No matter which SIM card you buy, there are feedbacks of patchy connection or completely no mobile signal due to the dead zone in Angkor temple areas.

Purchase Your Prepaid SIM Card Online to Use in Cambodia and Asia

Another suggestion is to purchase your 4G Prepaid SIM online or Pocket 4G WiFi device to use in Cambodia and most parts of Asia. Pick up at any of these airports or get it delivered to your location before arriving in Cambodia at a competitive rate.

Buying Cambodia Tourist SIM from Smaller Shops

You can also buy Cambodia SIM cards from smaller shops in the city. They may receive some commission from selling them, which means you have to pay more. A passport is usually required to register for the SIM cards in the authorised mobile shops.

On the contrary, many smaller shops do not care about it. That said, if you lose your SIM card, you cannot get a replacement with the same numbers since there is no registration inside the system. Therefore, it is advisable to get your SIM card from a reputable source.

Get a Cambodia SIM Card to Contact Your Driver

It makes sense to get a SIM card for less than US$5 to contact your driver in Cambodia, just in case you do not see him at the agreed place. You can get a SIM card readily from the airports the moment you land. The internet connection works very well in our hotel at Royal Crown Hotel & Spa . Although the hotel provided free WiFi, the receptivity was unstable and got disconnected most of the time. Most of the time, I had to depend on my mobile data.

Once, I had exited from the wrong gate after my visit to East Mebon trip in Angkor Park. I could not see my tuk-tuk driver. One kind lady seller from the nearby food stall told me that she saw my driver at the other end of the road, which was about 150 m away. I walked towards the direction and found my driver. If I had not seen my driver after going towards the said direction, I would have called him.

Imagine losing the sight of your driver under the 40°C suffocating temperature ? Sometimes, the drivers would find a cooling spot for parking and shelter themselves from the heat, get some drinks, or even go to the toilet as they do not know how long you want to visit each place after dropping you off. Thus, exchanging mobile number with each other will give you peace of mind without losing him. Lastly, want to know how to get admission tickets for the Angkor Temples and also other Siem Reap attractions besides the temples ?

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Cambodia in 2024

cambodia travel sim card

If you plan on visiting Cambodia, having a sim card is essential. With internet access, navigating new cities becomes a breeze. You can easily find the top-rated restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, and even share photos with your loved ones while on the move.

While roaming is an option, the costs can quickly add up when traveling internationally. That’s why we highly recommend either getting an eSIM or a local sim card to enjoy local phone rates.

Fortunately, obtaining either option in Cambodia is incredibly convenient, but it’s important to know which one suits you best. This comprehensive guide aims to provide you with all the information you need about purchasing a sim card in Cambodia, including the latest pricing and the absolute best sim card for your needs.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in cambodia for tourists.

The best sim card in Cambodia is the prepaid sim card offered by Smart. The $5 USD sim card offers 25GB data which is extremely cheap and a better deal than Metfone.

Metfone and Smart have the best network coverage and reliability across Cambodia so I always recommend sticking to these two operators.

eSims in Cambodia are not at all competitively priced, so if budget is a concern to you then you should stick to the local sim cards. However, if you are just visiting Cambodia on a short holiday I recommend checking out Airalo’s Cambodia eSim . For $9 USD you’ll get 3GB of data which is more than enough for a quick trip to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

With the eSim you won’t need to visit a store in Cambodia, register with your passport or install a physical sim card. It’s up to you whether you value the convenience.

Cambodia Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Cambodia costs $5 USD in September 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Cambodia will cost between $4.50 USD and $13.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Cambodia which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $13.50 USD.

Cambodia Sim Card Providers

In Cambodia, there are three main SIM card providers that dominate the telecommunications market: Metfone, Smart, and Cellcard. Metfone, a subsidiary of the Vietnamese military-run telecom group Viettel, is one of the most popular choices among locals and tourists. Offering affordable data packages and extensive network coverage, Metfone serves a vast customer base across the country.

Smart, owned by the Malaysian telecommunication giant Axiata Group, is another prominent player in Cambodia. With its cutting-edge technology and competitive rates, Smart attracts users with its reliable network and attractive data plans.

Cellcard, previously known as Mobitel, is the oldest telecom operator in Cambodia. It holds a strong position in the market, focusing on providing reliable voice calls and high-quality data services to its users.

These three providers, Metfone, Smart, and Cellcard, compete fiercely amidst an ever-growing demand for telecommunications services in Cambodia.

Metfone Tourist Sim

Their sim cards provide reliable network coverage across the country, allowing tourists to stay connected during their trip. How to Get a Sim Card in Cambodia

Identify mobile providers: Metfone, Smart and Cellcard are your best options in Cambodia.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Cambodia

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Cambodia at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Cambodia then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Cambodia have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Metfone, Smart and Cellcard. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Cambodia are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Cambodia with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Cambodia eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Cambodia. The Airalo Cambodia eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $13.50 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Cambodia without having to venture outside.

Airalo Cambodia

Our preferred eSim provider in Cambodia is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Cambodia and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Cambodia eSim uses the Smart Axiata network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Smart Axiata networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Cambodia.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Cambodia eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $9 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $13.50 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 5GB data plan for $13.50 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Cambodia

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Cambodia eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Cambodia eSim uses the CamGSMnetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Cambodia

Here are the plans and prices for Holafly’s Cambodia eSim:

8GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $47 USD

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM, is a digital SIM card that is built into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there is no need to physically insert or remove the eSIM from the device.

Instead, the eSIM is integrated into the device’s hardware and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This means that users can easily switch between different mobile networks or plans without the hassle of changing physical SIM cards.

The advantages of eSIM technology include convenience, flexibility, and ease of use, particularly for travelers or individuals who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. With an eSIM, there is no need to purchase and insert physical SIM cards, making it much more convenient to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users simply need to scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or enter the activation details manually. Once activated, the device can connect to the desired mobile network and enjoy voice, data, and messaging services, just like with a traditional SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

eSIMs offer several benefits, including convenience, dual SIM functionality, space-saving, remote provisioning, and future-proofing.

Firstly, using an eSIM eliminates the need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans, which is particularly useful for frequent travelers.

Secondly, eSIMs allow for dual SIM functionality, meaning you can have two active mobile numbers on the same device. This is helpful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines.

Additionally, eSIMs are embedded within the device, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card slot and freeing up space within the device.

Moreover, eSIMs can be activated or managed remotely over the air, without the need for a physical SIM card or visiting a store. This provides greater flexibility and convenience in managing your mobile connectivity.

Lastly, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures that you can take advantage of new services and offerings as eSIM technology gains traction among mobile networks and service providers.

In conclusion, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity, making it a compelling choice for many users.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

5 Best eSIM For Cambodia (Stay Connected While You Travel)

Want to get an eSIM for a trip to Cambodia but don’t know what your options are? Then you’ve come to the right place because this detailed guide features all the best eSIMs for Cambodia!

Whether you need an eSIM for a week or more than a month, you’ll find a few options worth considering here.

At A Glance: Best eSim Providers in Cambodia

  • Our Favorite Airalo

I’ve also included both limited and unlimited data plans, as well as options from international and local providers, so you have a great overview of the best eSIM for Cambodia!

Choosing The Ideal eSIM

Choosing the right eSIM for your trip comes down to a few simple choices:

  • Unlimited Data or a few GB of data
  • Do you need Calls & SMSs
  • One country or multiple in Asia

Once you have answered these questions, it becomes far simpler to choose the perfect eSIM.

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is probably the most popular data-only eSIM provider for most worldwide countries. Their data plans for Cambodia start at just $4.5, which is super affordable. The cheapest plan includes 1 GB of data valid for a week, and it’s fine for travelers who are staying in the country for a short time and don’t need too much mobile data.

There are two other Airalo Connect Cambodia data plans –

  • 3 GB for $9
  • 5 GB for $13.5

Both these plans are valid for an entire month, and they’re a decent option if you need Internet access for a longer time period. It’s worth noting that, if you run out of mobile data, you always purchase more data, either through the Airalo app or their online store.

Airalo’s Cambodia eSIMs allow you to connect to the Smart Axiata network, which is one of the top three providers in the country. They might not have the best coverage overall, but they do have the best 4G and LTE availability, which is what matters most anyway.

  • Cheap per GB
  • Top mobile network
  • Great customer service
  • Limited packages available

Holafly is renowned for its unlimited data eSIMs. Although they used only to have one eSIM for Cambodia, I have been keeping my eyes peeled – and now they offer Unlimited Data there too!

They offer a great deal if you don’t want to worry about data limits, here are the Holafly plans:

  • 5 Days for $19
  • 7 Days for $27
  • 10 Days for $34
  • 15 Days for $47
  • 20 Days for $54

Which averages out to about $4 a day for the smallest plan and $2.7 for the longest plan. A great deal if you ask me!

Holafly plans in Cambodia

Are there any downsides in my experience with Holafly? Yes, you can’t share the data with any other device, so be careful which phone or tablet you install the eSIM on.

If you need to work via your laptop and hotspot to your phone, then it’s not going to work, unfortunately.

Holalfy also uses the Smart network in Cambodia which has gotten great awards from OpenSignal this year and looks to be one of the best available.

  • Unlimited data for great prices
  • Great mobile network and connections
  • Lots of flexibility
  • No hotspots
  • No Phone number

Nomad is a popular international eSIM provider that allows travelers to stay connected to the Internet while exploring the world. They’re usually a decent alternative to Airalo, but sadly that’s not the case with their eSIM cards for Cambodia.

The cheapest eSIM data plan from Nomad is $25, and that gets you just 1 GB of data to be used over a week. They have two other monthly plans – 3 GB for $40 and 5 GB for $45. There’s just no reason to pay that amount of money for one of their data plans when Airalo lets you buy the same data allowance four times cheaper.

  • Great connectivity
  • Decent customer service
  • Very expensive

SimOptions is an international provider that offers both its own eSIM, as well as eSIM data plans from other providers. The SimOptions Smart Traveller eSIM is a good choice for frequent travelers because it offers Internet access in multiple countries throughout the world. For some $18, you get 6 GB of mobile data to be used in most countries in Asia, Australia, and the United States.

They work with Metfone in Cambodia, so you’ll get access to the best network provider in the country. The initial credit is valid for 10 days, but the eSIM doesn’t get deactivated for an entire year, so you can keep using it for as long as you want if you just keep buying more data.

  • Affordable eSIMs
  • Longterm plans
  • Great mobile coverage
  • No phone or SMS

AIS eSIM2Fly

AIS eSim2Fly is another international eSIM provider with great  data plans for the Asia  region. They don’t offer single-country plans, so they’re a good option only if your travel plans include visiting countries other than Cambodia.

You can choose between a Global plan and an Asia plan, and the Asia plan is generally the better and more affordable option. It’s $39.90 for 6 GB of data, valid for 8 days. The limited data is for the 5G/LTE networks, and you also get unlimited access to 2G, but at speeds of 128 kbps.

The eSIM is valid in 34 countries throughout Asia, and it includes a Thai phone number you can use to make calls and send/receive texts. When you use up all the credit or the 8 days expire, you can easily extend the validity period of the eSIM by purchasing additional data.

  • Big range of countries in Asia
  • Affordable plans
  • More expensive per GB

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in Cambodia

The main advantage of getting a Cambodia eSIM is that you can have Internet access at your fingertips everywhere in the country. While you might have some free WiFi access in the bigger cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, if you have any plans to travel to the more remote regions of the country, you will need mobile data access if you want to use maps, at the very least.

Many tourist attractions in Cambodia lack the infrastructure necessary for Internet access, so don’t expect to find free WiFi at tourist hotspots like Angkor Wat or Bayon Temple.

The benefit of getting an eSIM specifically is that you don’t have to take out your existing sim card, or even an SD card. You can add the data plan virtually, and keep using your phone like you normally do.

A Cambodia eSIM will also protect you from having to pay exorbitant data roaming charges. Purchasing a local data plan for Cambodia is significantly cheaper than paying for roaming.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Cambodia

Smart Axiata (formerly known as Smart Cambodia) launched eSIMs in Cambodia back in 2018, and nowadays they offer eSIMs to all their subscribers and even prepaid customers. You can check out more of their prepaid and travel-friendly plans on  their website , but they don’t appear to have a valid online shop. Instead, you would have to purchase an eSIM in a physical shop in Cambodia.

That’s not ideal for most travelers, but at the same time, you’ll probably pay a lot less for a local Cambodia eSIM than for one from an international provider.

Metfone is another local operator in Cambodia that offers eSIMs for their prepaid plans. You can purchase an eSIM in a physical store, and it will usually include some prepaid credit to get you started. The eSIM is initially valid for 14 days, but you can extend the validity of their local sim cards by purchasing top-ups, which can be done both in the physical shops and through the online app.

It’s worth noting that Metfone is considered the best network operator in Cambodia. They have more than 50% of the market share and the best coverage in the country, so they’re a pretty safe bet for a Cambodia eSIM.

Devices Compatible with eSIM in Cambodia

All devices that support eSIM technology are going to be compatible with an eSIM in Cambodia. This includes most smartphones released in the last 4-5 years: iPhones from the iPhone XR onward, Google Pixel 2 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and a few more Android phones from other manufacturers.

One important thing to note is that all iPhones manufactured in 2018 and later (including the SE models) support eSIM technology, but not all Androids doo. Most manufacturers choose not to include this technology in their cheapest phone models, so if you own a mid-range Android device, you should double-check whether your smartphone supports an eSim.

The quickest way of checking is to dial *#06#. When you press call, it will pull up a list of several serial numbers for your device – the EID number is what you should look for. That indicates that your phone is compatible with virtual sims, and if there is an EID number you can use an eSim.

Data Needed When Traveling to Cambodia

Not sure how much data you need for your trip to Cambodia? That depends on a few different factors, most importantly the length of your trip, your Internet browsing habits, and whether you will have free WiFi access at your accommodation.

If you switch between WiFi and mobile data for the majority of your trip and you’re not staying in the country for more than 10 days, you should be fine with most data plans that include 1-3 GB. I sometimes don’t use more than that in an entire month, and I often use mobile data at home instead of WiFi.

However, if you’re going to stream videos or even movies, then look for data plans with a larger allowance. You will burn through a lot more data when video streaming, especially if you’re going to stay in the country longer. Plans that include 10-20 GB should be suitable for you. Unlimited data plans are also an option worth considering, but only if you can actually find a local provider that offers an unlimited data plan for Cambodia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i get an esim in cambodia.

Yes, you can get an eSIM in Cambodia from either Smart Axiata or Metfone. Both are local providers that offer prepaid eSim data plans for tourists, and they’re a good choice if you’re not satisfied with the data plans from most international eSim providers.

How can I buy an eSIM in Cambodia?

To buy an eSIM in Cambodia, you can just walk into a physical store of Metfone or Smart Axiata. It’s currently not that easy to buy a local eSIM online, but it is possible to purchase a Cambodia eSIM from one of the several international providers.

How do I activate my eSIM in Cambodia?

To activate an eSIM in Cambodia you can just turn on the mobile data and browse the Internet. But this includes you having added the eSim plan to your device previously, either by inputting the data manually through the phone’s network settings or by scanning a QR code included with the purchase of the eSim.

Cambodia phone number

How to make a phone call, internet speed, internet access, internet censorship, who are the cellular operators in cambodia, how much does a cambodia sim card cost, where to buy a sim card in cambodia, how to subscribe to a pre-paid internet program with the cambodia sim card, what is the best cambodia travel sim card for tourist, the recommended sim card for sonasia holiday traveler, to conclude.

It is now the 21th century, and you need to connect to the world every day.

You want to call your family and friends at home to share a picture of the beautiful landscapes or the wonderful people you met.

Or sometimes you need to finish your urgent business.

This will lead to the popular questions:

  • How can you call back home from Cambodia?
  • How can you connect to the internet in Cambodia?
  • And what is the best travel SIM card for tourist in Cambodia?

We make it all clear below.

Phone Call in Cambodia

First of all, we need to understand the phone number system in Cambodia and how to make a phone call from/to Cambodia.

Land lines number

To dial a land line in Cambodia all over the country, the format is Area Code + Phone Number. The area code is 3 digits long, followed by a 6-or-7-digit phone number.

Calls made from outside Cambodia must omit the prefix 0. Therefore, to call a land line number in Phnom Penh from other countries, dialing begins with +855 23 followed by 6 or 7 digits.

Cambodia Country Calling Code: 855

Provincial Calling Codes as in the below table

Mobile telephones number

Likewise to call mobile phones from land line or other mobile phones, domestic dialing begins a 0 followed by 8 or 9 digits.

Mobile numbers in Cambodia take the form: 0TT-AXX-XXXY.

The first two numbers after the leading 0 or 'TT' in the example above identify the operator. For example, 010 234 567 is an example of a 9 digit mobile number from Smart. 088 234 5678 on the other hand is an example of a 10 digit mobile number from Metfone.

The 3rd digit after the leading 0 or 'A' in the example above must be between 1 and 9.

Normally this value is between 2 and 9 which allows a value of '1' to be used for mobile phones which are roaming in Cambodia. However some operators such as Mobitel are using a '1' in this range to extend their number ranges for certain popular prefixes. For example, 012 123 4567 and 092 123 456 are valid mobile numbers in Cambodia

'X' can take the values 0 to 9 and 'Y' is an optional extra digit which is used by some operators.

Most mobile numbers are 8 digits long (excluding the leading 0), however some operators are now using 9-digit numbers. 0882345678 is an example of a valid 9-digit mobile number.

Calls made from outside Cambodia must omit the prefix 0. Therefore, to call a mobile number in Cambodia from other countries, dialing begins with +855 1, +855 8, or +855 92662075/9 etc.

The below picture will give you the summary of the mobile number in Cambodia.

To Cambodia

This is the code for a part of the country. It is usually a general area or a city. Some countries are not large enough to warrant their own code, so will have the country code 1 and use the area code to define the country.

You can check the full list of area codes in Cambodia in the Land line number part

If there is no area code (i.e. the mobile number), just ignore and come directly to the number.

For example, in case you want to call the mobile number: 031-2345678, just dial: Your country exit code + (855-31-2345678).

Below are some examples

  • From USA & Canada: 011 855-31-2345678
  • From France: 00 855-31-2345678
  • From German: 00 855-31-2345678

From Cambodia

  • To USA & Canada: 001 + 1 + Telephone number
  • To France: 001 + 33 + Telephone number

Internet in Cambodia

The access to internet is quite good in Cambodia, from the capital Phnom Penh even up to the remote parts of the borders going to Vietnam and Thailand, surprisingly they do have internet. Of course, it should be better in the urban Cambodia such as Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap…… Though the internet speed is not as good as Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh, but it is faster than Myanmar and is quite cheap.

You can access free internet in most of the ubiquitous cafe, restaurant, guesthouse, hotel, University or office building in Phnom Penh. You can even do 2–3 hours of free internet at some of the cafe near old Kirirom Cinema by just buying coffee for 50 cents.

Most mobile operators offer 4G internet and rates are very cheap. Currently one operator has a plan: 0.25 cents = 1GB, 1-day validity.

cambodia travel sim card

Cambodia’s broadband Internet download speed ranks ahead of some of Asean’s more advanced countries, but is far behind the global average, according to the most recent results of Internet speed tests conducted by the U.S.-based broadband testing company Ookla .

Internet Speed in Cambodia averaged 1929.20 KBps from 2007 until 2017, reaching an all time high of 5430.40 KBps in the first quarter of 2017 and a record low of 231.76 KBps in the third quarter of 2007

To get Internet in Cambodia you have basically 3 options

1. With a Wi-Fi (or cable) Connection

Your hotel, restaurant or café may provide you with a Wi-Fi connection (or a cable connection). Most of the times the wifi is free if you consume a drink or you stay at the hotel, other times the business asks for a special fee.

2. With a Local Sim of one of the cell phone Networks

If Internet access is important for you and you want to be independent from the wifi networks in cafés and hotels, buy a local SIM from one of the local cellphone (cellular) networks and make a pre-paid Internet subscription, like that you can get internet even under a coconut tree on an island.

3. With the Sim Card of your country

This is usually not going to be the cheapest option. The cellular network of your country will charge you high for phoning or using internet from abroad and it is difficult to beat the prices of Cambodia, but you can never know. If you are not sure about the prices that your operator will charge you, buy a local SIM for your stay in Cambodia.

Although still ranked “Partly Free”, internet freedom in Cambodia is slipping, says a report in 2018 by Freedom House , a US-based democracy, political freedom and human rights watchdog.  The report found that Cambodia was among 26 countries that had dropped on its scale, while 19 had seen internet freedom improve.

It said Cambodia had intensified a crackdown on online dissidents, with arrests made over political commentary on social media and news sites.

Cambodia scored 55 on the scale in which 0 is “Free” and 100 “Least Free”. Over the past five years, the Kingdom has been slipping – from a score of 47 points in 2013 and 2014, 48 points in 2015 and 52 points in 2016 and 2017.

Freedom House assesses internet freedom in 65 countries with grades of “Free” for a score from 0 to 30 points, “Partly Free” for 31-60 points and “Not Free” between 61-100 points. Cambodia’s neighbors, Vietnam (with 76 points) and Thailand (65 points) remain “Not Free”.

The report based its conclusion on a wide range of aspects affecting media freedom, including the adoption of the lese majeste law, the release of code of conducts for the media by the National Election Committee, inter-ministerial prakas to form groups to monitor online news and the closure of Radio Free Asia Cambodia and the Cambodia Daily newspaper.

However, if you ask a Cambodian, most of them will say that the report is not true as most of the blocked parts are related to sensitive contents such as politics or pornographic.

Being the tourist, we advise you stay away from all of this, it is your turn to enjoy the culture, the food, or the sea; it is not your turn to debate and end up in jail.

Buying a local SIM Card in Cambodia

Now we answer the most important question: what is the best Cambodia travel SIM card for tourists?

We will first need to know...

There are four main telco providers in Cambodia: Metfone, Smart, Cellcard and qb. Locals and travelers use SIM cards from all four networks, and the networks can be trusted regardless of the plan you choose. According to OpenSignal’s coverage map, Cambodia has strong network coverage around Phnom Penh and other main cities and towns. Other areas can be weak, and in some country areas, it can be difficult to find a signal at all.

Metfone is the largest network provider in Cambodia with more than a 50% market share. You can purchase prepaid SIM cards for $1-$2 in official stores. The MetTravel Tariff is the best SIM card on offer for tourists, and they also offer 4G/LTE services.

Smart is the second largest provider in Cambodia and one of the cheapest. It has the best coverage in the country and was the first to introduce 4G/LTE. It’s available in all major towns and cities, including Phnom Penh.

Cellcardis the third largest provider and provides good coverage in the main towns and cities. Its network signal can be a bit unpredictable in the country areas. You can purchase prepaid SIM cards for just $1 from official stores. Avoid the “Niyeay” plan because you won’t be able to upload any add-on packs. You should stick to the regular SIM card, so you can add data. The standard SIM card comes with 50 Cellcard texts and 10MB of data, which is valid for 30 days.

qb is the smallest provider in the country. They offer the lowest data rates but the network coverage can be very limited in some areas. qb is not a good choice if you’re planning on going on a tour of the country. You can pick up a prepaid SIM cards for as little as $1, which include 10 data minutes per day on the basic plan. You can also purchase credit and add-ons.

cambodia travel sim card

In general, the price of a tourist SIM card in Cambodia will start from $2. However, from our experience, you should buy one at $5-6/SIM with which you can have either unlimited data plan, free text, or free call depending on the package you choose. These packages are actually designed for tourists travelling in Cambodia

Check the below table for your reference.

Buying a SIM card in Cambodia is very straightforward. There are plenty of small distributors in town where you can buy the SIM card that you want.

However, we recommend you come directly to the official shops of the suppliers, where you may find an English-speaking staff who can help you activate the SIM and give some suitable information of the SIM.

Moreover, remember to bring the passport along with you as they need it to register the SIM. The small shop in town may not care about this, but the risk will be then all yours.

My advice to make your SIM card work is … to ask the help from the sellers! Yes, that is all you need to remember.

What you need to know is which prepaid package that you want to register and top-up money at least enough for that. Prepare the money and give it to the sellers, then leave it for them.

Of course, do not forget to recheck the plan that they register for your before leaving.

You can either ask for help from the hotel receptionists, this seems better as they can speak English and give you some advices.

The story is even much easier if you have an escorting guide who can do everything for you.

That’s it. Do not waste your time to learn about something you will not do it twice.

In case you really want to learn about this, we recommend reading this article: https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/cambodia

The question you should ask now is…

To find the best SIM Card for your trip in Cambodia , you should consider at least the below 5 factors:

If you plan to travel around the big cities and tourist hubs, you can choose any operator. If you plan to visit the remote area, choose the one with the largest coverage.

At the time we write this article (September 2019), MetFone has the largest coverage over the countries. You should choose the SIM from this supplier in case you want to visit the remote northern Cambodia.

We recommend you buy a limited data package (just in case) as the public wi-fi (restaurants, coffee shops, hotels) is almost everywhere in Cambodia. Moreover, you do not need internet during most of the daytime while travelling around. You only need it in the evening or early morning while you are … at the hotel.

The internet speeds

According to broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk, MetFone has the fastest internet speed in Cambodia. Staying in places like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, or Sihanoukville, MetFone is definitely the best Cambodia prepaid sim card for tourist when it comes down to Internet speed.

Phone & Text

We recommend you buy some extra minutes to call your guide and driver sometimes; or you can register and call a grab taxi to go around on your own.

Duration of your journey

The longer your journey is, the bigger data package and more minutes to call you need.

After considering all the factor above, we recommend you buy a SIM Card for tourist from MetFone , who has the largest 3G or 4G coverage all over the country. With $6, you can have fairly enough for what you want during your journey in Cambodia

Tip: Heading to a specific area then go to opensignal.com and zoom in on your destination to find the best provider. Especially for long term travelers this tool is perfect to see what the best Cambodia sim card for nomads is. That said, MetFone is the best provider at the moment, but things change quickly. It is best to re-check the situation when you travel.

cambodia travel sim card

It is fairly cheap and popular to have internet access in Cambodia.

For our travelers, we recommend you buy a Portable Mobile Wi-fi Router , with which you can buy only one SIM Card and share the Wi-fi internet with your travel mate on the go.

In the urgent case, if you do not have the Wifi router, you can use internet tethering on your mobile phone to use the internet on your computer or share the internet with your travel mate.

Wherever you have connection, you can use Skype or WhatsApp to call to your family without all the hassle of learning about exit code or country code to dial your friends’ numbers at home.

Cambodia SIM card: everything you need to know

Cambodia SIM card: everything you need to know

Visiting Cambodia soon? Make sure you know what to expect when purchasing cambodia sim card .

This guide explains where you can buy SIM cards in person and online in Cambodia. We’ll also cover prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs (if your phone supports them).

Before reading this guide, you may be wondering whether you actually need a SIM card in Cambodia. If you don’t mind not having internet, you can probably find free Wi-Fi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

However, if you need data to get around, hail a taxi, or translate Khmer, you may want to get a Cambodia travel SIM card.

Best SIM card in Cambodia

When traveling to Cambodia, we recommend using a Smart, Metfone, Cellcard, or Airalo SIM card. (We’ll talk about Airalo later. Keep reading to learn more.)

That said, if you plan to visit other countries during your trip to Asia, we recommend choosing an option that offers coverage in other Asian countries.

How to buy a SIM card in Cambodia

Cambodian prepaid SIM cards can be purchased directly at some international airports, mobile phone provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

We do not recommend purchasing SIM cards at the airport, as you can usually expect higher charges and lower data usage at the airport.

However, be aware that not every airport has a SIM card shop. Also, when you go to the store, your options may be limited.

For this reason, we recommend purchasing your SIM card directly from your mobile provider store. Please note that your passport may be required for purchase.

However, this means that the data cannot be retrieved correctly upon arrival. So, if you want to always be connected, you can use an eSIM or buy an Asian prepaid SIM card online.

Planning an upcoming adventure? Travel by bus! (It’s cheap!)

Now let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Smart, Metfone, and Cellcard.

Final thoughts on Cambodian SIM cards

As you can see, it is very easy to get a prepaid SIM card in Cambodia or get an eSIM for traveling to Cambodia. You can also stay connected anywhere in Asia without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase an Asia plan.

If you want to get your data when you arrive in Cambodia, I think an eSIM card is the most convenient way to get your data. This eliminates the need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you first need to make sure your phone supports eSIM.

Cambodia SIM Card 2024: Complete Guide for Tourists

Cambodia, a neighboring country of Vietnam on the Indochina Peninsula, was on my travel bucket list. Before my trip, I wondered about the necessity and process of getting a local SIM card. After some research, I found the essential information. If you're planning to travel to Cambodia, getting a SIM card is crucial for staying connected and avoiding high roaming charges. In this article, I’ll share my experience on how to get a SIM card in Cambodia. Follow along for useful tips!

1. Why is a SIM card needed in Cambodia?

2. which operator is the most recommended in cambodia, 3. which mobile plan is best for cambodia, 4. which sim card is best suited, 5. where can you buy a sim card in cambodia, 6. what should you know, 7. tips for saving data.

First of all, it is essential to understand that Cambodia  is a developing country with less advanced telecommunications infrastructure than other nations. Therefore, finding free Wi-Fi or reliable internet cafes to connect to the Internet can be difficult. Additionally, international calls are often expensive and unreliable.

In major cities such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, as well as tourist destinations, most hotels, cafes, and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi access.

The National Museum, a must-see place to visit

However, the quality of the connection may vary depending on the number of users, sometimes slow or intermittent. Even on islands like Koh Rong, it is relatively easy to find Wi-Fi hotspots, but access speed remains limited and unstable due to the distance from the mainland.

Connectivity in Cambodia

This is where the SIM card comes in. By purchasing a local SIM card, I was able to easily access the Internet using local mobile data networks. Additionally, I was able to make local and international calls at cheaper rates than with a foreign SIM card.

It's also worth noting that Cambodian SIM cards are often affordable, providing a budget-friendly option for budget-conscious travelers while still staying connected.

Finally, purchasing a local SIM card allows you to benefit from better customer service if there is a problem with your Internet connection or phone line. Local operators are generally more responsive and efficient in resolving problems than foreign operators.

If you plan to travel to the country for an extended period, you should know that Metfone is renowned for offering the most reliable coverage across Cambodia. However, it is important to note that its speed is sometimes lower than that of its competitors.

Cellcard emerges as the leader in Cambodia's Download Speed Experience in 2023, surpassing Smart with an impressive average speed of 18.8Mbps, a notable 5.8Mbps increase. Both Cellcard and Smart now share the Video Experience and Games Experience awards, highlighting their competitive edge. Cellcard also excels in Consistent Quality, leading in Excellent Consistent Quality, while Smart dominates in Core Consistent Quality.

Metfone and Smart maintain their dominance in coverage categories, with Smart leading in Voice App Experience, showcasing superior performance.

If in doubt, you can check out a detailed comparison of the most popular phone carriers below.

Metfone - the largest telephone operator in the country

Metfone , a subsidiary of the Vietnamese military network Viettel, stands out for its robust coverage across most of Cambodia, having become the largest telecommunications network in the country, with more than 50% market share in coverage, revenue, and subscribers.

4G speeds, while slightly slower than the competition, are offset by extensive coverage, making Metfone attractive to travelers. This well-established operator offers excellent, extensive network coverage and competitive rates.

However, it offers few prepaid plan options, focusing more on long-term use, mainly for phone calls. I didn't find any specific package offers for tourists on the Metfone website.

Cellcard - the fastest mobile network in Cambodia

Since the introduction of its 4G network in 2015, Cellcard has continued to strengthen its position and quickly became the fastest 4G network in Cambodia. Their cell towers now cover more than 80% of the country, offering attractive deals for residents and travelers alike. They have recently won awards for their speed and seem destined to become the leading force among Cambodia's mobile networks.

In addition to its fast network, Cellcard offers competitive rates and attractive offers. Another advantage of choosing Cellcard is the quality of its customer service, with a team available to answer your questions and quickly resolve your problems.

Smart - The best economic operator in Cambodia

Smart is not only a popular mobile operator, but it is also recognized as the leading budget operator in Cambodia. Since 2021, Smart has expanded its 4G network coverage in various provinces in Cambodia by adding more than 300 new base stations. These additional locations have significantly improved Smart's 4G LTE network coverage, as well as the overall user experience. It operates on 3G, 3.75G, and 4G/LTE networks, and they are actively developing 5G in Cambodia.

Please note that Cambodia mobile operators require your identification (passport) for eSIM and physical SIM cards.

Once you have a Metfone SIM card, you can top up your balance via the official Metfone website at the following address: pay. metfone . Then, you can select from the different packages below:

Telephone operators in Cambodia offer two types of SIM cards: the eSIM (Virtual SIM) and the prepaid physical SIM card.

In my experience, the physical prepaid SIM card is the most suitable, popular, and commonly chosen in Cambodia. Metfone, Cellcard, and Smart also sell SIM cards for tourists, but I opted for one just for locals, which worked well during my stay.

Normally, physical SIM card comes in three popular formats: standard, micro, and nano. To fit the size of your phone's SIM card slot, simply cut it out and insert it.

Choose the best SIM card

If you prefer to use an eSIM rather than a physical SIM card, this will allow you to use your cell phone without having to change SIM cards. Metfone , Smart & Cellcard offer eSIMs to prepaid customers. Note that Cambodian mobile operators require your identification (passport) for eSIMs.

Alternative solutions like Airalo ,  Holafly , Nomad offer regional eSIMs that include coverage in both Cambodia and Vietnam.

Activating an eSIM for travel typically involves the following steps:

  • Purchase an eSIM plan from a provider with international coverage.
  • You will receive a QR code or other activation details from the provider.
  • On your eSIM-compatible device, go to the settings related to mobile networks or cellular plans.
  • Select the option to add a new cellular plan or scan the QR code provided by the eSIM provider.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation.
  • Make sure your device's network settings are configured correctly for the destination country.

airalo

It's important to note that not all devices are compatible with eSIMs, so be sure to check your device's compatibility before choosing an eSIM.

  • Mobile phone stores:

You can find stores of Cellcard, Smart, and Metfone operators in most major cities and shopping malls such as AEON Mall, Ratana Plaza, MiDTown Mall, or Big Tree Mall. When you visit one of these stores, make sure you have your passport on hand and be prepared to pay a small fee for the SIM card.

Mobile Phone Stores for SIM Cards

  • On arrival at the Cambodia airport:

If you prefer to avoid the hassle of searching for a cell phone store, you can purchase a SIM card at the airport. Both international airports in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have mobile phone stands where you can purchase a SIM card and airtime credits. The advantage of purchasing a SIM card at the airport is that you can start using your cell phone as soon as you arrive in Cambodia.

Cambodia Airport

If you prefer to purchase a SIM card before traveling to Cambodia, you have the option of purchasing one online. Several websites offer Cambodian SIM cards, including SimOptions and SimCorner. When you buy a SIM card online, it will be mailed to you before you leave. This means you won't have to search for a cell phone store when you arrive in Cambodia.

It is essential to check the network coverage of the operator in the region you plan to travel to. Some remote areas may have limited network coverage, which may affect the quality of your internet connection and phone calls. You can view carriers' network coverage maps or ask locals or other travelers for recommendations.

Once you have used up your credit or your plan has expired, you will need to top up your SIM card to continue using it. Operators offer different recharge options, including online, in stores, or by purchasing prepaid recharge cards.

cambodia sim card

Be sure to check how long your credit is valid, as some carriers may deactivate your SIM card if you don't top up within a certain time frame.

Purchasing a SIM card in Cambodia is relatively simple. You can go to the operators' stores or the numerous points of sale located throughout the country. You will need to present your passport and complete a registration form. Once you have purchased the SIM card, you must activate it following the instructions provided by the operator.
