El Monumental

El Monumental

Club: CA River Plate | Opening: 1938 | Capacity: 64,000

History and description

In the first decades of the 20th century, River Plate occupied various grounds spread over Buenos Aires. Most of these were rather modest, and when the club’s supports grew rapidly in the early 1930s, the board decided to build a new stadium.

A plot of land was bought in the Belgrano area, and construction started in 1935. Building took over two years, and due to insufficient budget the construction of the North Stand had to be postponed for many more years.

El Monumental officially opened on 26 May 1938 with a friendly match between River and Uruguayan side Peñarol.

In 1958, the club finally had the funds to complete the construction of the North Stand. The stadium could hold about 100,000 fans at that time.

El Monumental underwent further developments in 1977, when a second tier was put on the North Stand. Changes at the lower tiers, however, meant that capacity was reduced to 76,600.

El Monumental was the centrepiece venue of the 1978 World Cup, hosting three matches during the first group phase, another three in the second group phase, the match for third place, and the final between Argentina and Holland (3-1).

In 1986, El Monumental got officially renamed Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti, in honour after the president who initiated its construction. Few changes have been made to the stadium since.

Estadio Monumental is also the stadium where the Argentine national team plays most of their home matches.

How to get to El Monumental

El Monumental is located towards the north of the city of Buenos Aires in the Belgrano area. The stadium lies close to the banks of the Rio de la Plata, about 9 kilometres from the city’s business centre (Microcentro), and approximately 5 kilometres from popular nightlife area Palermo.

There is no metro station particularly close to El Monumental, however the stadium can be reached in about 20 minutes walking from station Congreso de Tucumán on line D (green). Walk north over the Avenida Congreso.

From Retiro bus and train station, the stadium can be reached with local commuter trains ( Ferrovias ). There is regular service from Retiro to station Scalabrini Ortiz, which is a 5-minute walk away from the stadium.

Other train services from Retiro go to the stations Belgrano or Nuñez. The walk from either station takes about 20 minutes.

There are also several buses (colectivos) that pass the stadium. Colectivo 29 goes past Plaza de Mayo (Microcentro), Avenida Cordoba, and runs through Palermo on Güemes street. Get off at the crossing of Avenida de Libertador and Quesada. Colectivo 15 runs along Avenida Santa Fé in Palermo. Get off at the same point.

Other colectivos that connect with the stadium are line 28, 42, 107, and 130, though none from central places.

Address: Figueroa Alcorta, 7597 Capital Federal

Eat, drink, and sleep near El Monumental

El Monumental is located in a generally well-off residential area mainly consisting of houses and large apartment blocks. There will be the odd bar and restaurant near the stadium, and quite a few eating and drinking options toward central Belgrano, e.g. on the Avenida Cabildo (where the metro runs).

There is a reasonable amount of hotels not far away from El Monumental. River House Bed & Breakfast is only a few blocks from the stadium, while Cristal Palace Hotel , Sarum Hotel Design , and Ker Belgrano Apart & Spa are decent options near the Avenida Cabildo. Click here for all hotels near El Monumental.

Alternatively, you can choose to stay in the Palermo area, one of the principal nightlife areas of the city, from where a taxi to the stadium is quite affordable (or you can catch the metro or a bus).

River Plate Tickets

Tickets for River games can generally be bought from one or two days before the match at the ticket windows (boleterias) of Estadio Monumental.

However, club members get preference in buying tickets and tickets only go on general sale if tickets remain after the member sales. River does tend to sell out a reasonable number of high-profile games.

Ticket prices depend on the match, but range from AR$250.00 for an upper tier seat at one of the curves to AR$ 700.00 for a middle-tier seat at one of the long sides.

I was lucky enough to see a game between River Plate and Independiente so it was a derby match. Tickets for River can only be bought online in specific time frames. Then they have to be picked up from ticket windows no later than a day prior to kick-off. You need an id to buy and pick up the ticket. Our was 950 pesos on long side and it was unreserved( plastic card with your details on it). There were at least 6 check up points before the game. A walk from metro station the day before the match took 20 minutes and the same walk on matchday took twice as long( the area is fenced off for security reasons so we had to walk around). The game was ok and stadium full( people were seating everywhere possible: stairs, rails, walls). There was no support since the main group is banned after the Boca trouble last year. The stadium is old but amazing. Every few minutes you can see a plane landing.

Reviews of Day Tours Classic

We weren't luck enough to be in ba when boca were playing at home but went for the next best option - the guided tour of their stadium. we had a grear guide (eugenie). she gave us loads of information on the ride there about the different areas we passed through and the history of the club. she took us through the museum and gave us so much information that we would never have found out if we had been wandering through on our own. she then accompanied us on the tour of the stadium itself which was really useful as it was largely in spanish and meant the stadium tour guide didn't need to repeat everything for us. i would definitely recommend this tour if you are a football fan., being a student and only visiting buenos aires for a short time, tangol was the best option i could ask for. besides going on a wonderful tour and having a great time at the futbol stadium tour, the customer service was terrific. anytime i wanted to double check a booking or had a question, they would respond promptly and always have an answer for me. i recommend using tangol for all your buenos aires trip adventures., we did the football tour with tangol, and saw both the la bombonera as well as the monumental stadium. we arranged the booking with julieta, who was very helpful in getting the booking done last minute. the tour itself was fascinating and the guide was very knowledgeable. he himself is a river plate supporter, and knew lots of little anecdotes on el clasico (the river vs. boca derby). overall i highly suggest this tour as it is also a very safe way to experience the neighbourhood of la boca., we recently did the tangol football stadium tour of boca juniors and river plate (the two biggest football teams in argentina). the tour was amazing, our tour guide translated the whole tour for us to english so we got a great experience, excellent tour pablo our guide was really knowledgeable in regards to all football not just argentinian and his english is excellent. we had various tours whilst in argentina but have to say this is by far the best.

Boca Juniors' "Bombonera" stadium

Present in tours

La bombonera.

For football fans, no trip to BA is complete without visiting the Bombonera stadium, or Estadio Alberto J. Armando, as it’s officially called, home to Maradona’s beloved Boca Juniors and often considered the stadium with the most intense, passionate atmosphere in the world. The stadium is just a stone’s throw from the famous Caminito of La Boca and is known as La Bombonera ("the chocolate box") owing to its unusual 'D' shape and steep sides, which give it incredible acoustics. The stands are very close to the pitch, with only a small space separating the fans from the field of play, which makes for an unbeatable atmosphere at matches.

The stadium was inaugurated on May 25 1940. Look out for the murals Pérez Celis, Rómulo Macció and Quinquela Martín in the entrance and exterior of the stadium, and check out the stadium's museum, the  Museo de la Pasión Boquense , open daily from 10am-6pm, to learn about the history of the club.

According to the British newspapers The Observer and The Sun, the "superclásico" rivalry match between Boca Juniors and River Plata at La Bombonera is the most intense sporting experience in the world, and the "number one sporting event to witness before you die". While the clash takes place at La Bombonera only once every season, it's well worth taking in any match held at this legendary stadium.

Experience the passion for yourself

What happens on the pitch itself is only part of the spectacle of the experience of watching a football match in Argentina. In the stands, supporters go wild, singing, shouting, jumping, embracing, and generally expressing their passion for their team. You'll learn the words of the local songs and chants, celebrate with strangers and smile as you understand that you've discovered the true essence of Argentine people. Buenos Aires Football Stadiums

River Plate

Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti (or simply El Monumental)

Address: Av. Pres. Figueroa Alcorta 7597, Nuñez

El Monumental is considered to be Argentina’s national stadium because it is usually the venue of choice to host major events. Besides being the home of River Plate, it is also used for many important sporting events, such as when the National Argentina Football Team ( La Selección ) plays as host at home for World Cup qualification games. In the upcoming 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, which Buenos Aires will be the host city, the Open and Closing Ceremonies will take place at  El Monumental.  Given it’s easily accessible location in the nice Buenos Aires neighborhood, Nuñez, and it’s size being the biggest in the country with a capacity of 70,000+ , it is also the venue for big concerts. Most of the international superstar performers who came to Buenos Aires held their shows at this stadium. The recent ones who have come through town include Coldplay, Roger Waters, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyprus etc.

Boca Juniors

La Bombonera Estadio Alberto J. Armando (formerly known as Estadio Camilo Cichero)

Address: Brandsen 805, La Boca

More popularly known as La Bombonera (the Chocolate Box) owing to it’s shape, where one side had to be built ‘flat’ due to limited space. The stadium is a well-known one because it’s owned by one of the most famous Argentine football clubs, Boca Juniors. It is because of it’s architectural uniqueness, it creates an unintentional amazing acoustic effect where you can actually feel the vibration when fans sing and jump in unison. Thus, offering an exceptional atmosphere unlike any other when watching a game at La Bombonera.  However, due to football club politics and increased insecurity at football games, it’s getting more and more difficult to get tickets to see a game, especially Boca home games, at La Bombonera  without having to pay a high fee and/or the connections to find one.

Vélez Sarsfield

Estadio José Amalfitani

Address: Av Juan B. Justo 9200, Liniers

This stadium is the home of Vélez Sarsfield, an Argentine First Division football club, and is also the national stadium for Los Pumas, the Argentina National Rugby Union Team. It is widely called as  El Fortín (The Small Fort). The stadium was originally built in wood in the early 40’s, but it was rebuilt in cement a few years later and further expanded to be used in the 1978 FIFA World Cup when Argentina was the host. International concerts were held occasionally at this venue. Rod Stewart, Elton John, Bon Jovi, One Direction were some of the visiting performers.

buenos aires stadium tour

San Lorenzo de Almagro

Estadio Pedro Bidegain

Address: Av. Perito Moreno y Varela, Bajo Flores

More widely known as  El Nuevo Gasómetro  (the new gas tank), it’s the new home of San Lorenzo team since 1993. They are a popular team locally but not much known in the international stage until recently because of Pope Francisco, who is from the neighborhood and is a supporter of San Lorenzo. The team is actually from Almagro and their original stadium, Estadio Gasómetro , was located in Boedo (just south of Almagro). However, in 1979 it was expropriated by the military government and the land was then sold to French retailer Carrefour. A huge Carrefour supermarket has taken up the lot ever since. For 14 years, San Lorenzo didn’t have a ‘home’ and had to move around playing at different stadiums until they managed to build  El Nuevo Gasómetro  not too far from their origin .  This newly built stadium has the largest pitch in the country and it is known for the only stadium that has a real tunnel for the players to enter the pitch rather than through an inflatable one.

Behind the Scenes: The Lifeblood of the Stadiums

Every major stadium in the world has a pulse that resonates beyond the matches they host. The same is true for Argentine football stadiums. Let’s dive deeper into the soul of these iconic arenas.

The Passion of Fans

The passion of Argentine football fans is legendary. Their fervor, chants, and synchronized movements create an atmosphere that is electric. Each stadium, be it El Monumental or La Bombonera, reverberates with the collective spirit of its fans. The ultras or the hardcore fans of each club play a significant role in setting the tone. They choreograph chants, design tifos (giant displays), and often ignite the entire stadium with their undying passion.

Culinary Delights around the Stadiums

Stadiums are not just about the sport; they are also about the culinary experiences that surround them. Venture around the stadiums on match days and you’ll find a plethora of street food vendors. From classic Argentine choripán (sausage sandwiches) to bondiolas (pork shoulder sandwiches), and from empanadas to alfajores, the area becomes a food lover’s paradise.

Memorabilia and Merchandise

Around these stadiums, especially on match days, you can find a variety of stalls selling club memorabilia. From jerseys, scarves, and hats to posters, keychains, and flags, fans can buy artifacts to showcase their loyalty. Each item tells a story, each color represents a legacy.

The Influence on Local Culture

Football in Argentina is not just a sport; it’s a way of life. It influences music, dance, art, and literature. Many musicians have written songs dedicated to their favorite teams. Street art and murals depicting football legends or significant moments in a club’s history can be found around the neighborhoods of these stadiums.

Guided Tours and Museums

For those who want an in-depth understanding of the club’s history and achievements, these stadiums often offer guided tours. Some of them, like El Monumental, house museums that showcase trophies, memorable jerseys, and other artifacts that chronicle the club’s journey over the years.

Argentine football stadiums are not just structures made of bricks and cement. They are temples of passion, history, and culture. Each corner echoes with tales of legendary matches, iconic goals, and unforgettable moments. Every seat has witnessed emotions ranging from the ecstasy of victory to the heartbreak of defeat. Whether you are a football enthusiast or someone looking to experience Argentine culture, a visit to these stadiums offers a unique and unforgettable experience. So, the next time you’re in Buenos Aires, don’t just watch a match; immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of stories these stadiums have to offer.

I took a four-week course at Vamos and was delighted with the experience. The course is conversation-intensive, which was incredibly useful given that speaking tends to be the most difficult skill.

Vamos Spanish Academy offers an outstanding educational experience. I spent a total of 12 exceptional weeks at the school.

I can also recommend highly the home stay feature of the course. I stayed with an Argentinian in the next suburb who only spoke Spanish, but who was very patient with me as I improved.
