Wild and rugged one day, and dreamy and calm the next, Beachport is the quaint and quiet beachside township perfect for time away together, or to carve out quality time with your family.
Whether you are visiting for a day, or parking your van here for a week, this place will captivate you with its coastal charm and everchanging scenery.
Beachport Conservation Park & Bowman Scenic Drive.
Whether the day is grey, or the sun is beating down, Bowman’s scenic drive through the Beachport Conservation Park is your first bucket list item to tick off at Beachport!
Time is always well spent along this 8km stretch, where every time you reach a crest along the drive, you are wowed by the spectacular vistas of undulating sand-dunes, untouched beaches kissing dramatic limestone cliffs.
It’s our very own Great Ocean Road (without the foot traffic!), that you’ll want to witness at sunrise, sunset and every time in between!
A sunny afternoon trip down Bowmans isn’t complete without a pitstop to The Pool of Siloam .
This natural phenomenon will float your boat in more ways than one… Reputed to be seven times saltier than the sea, taking a dip here is not only the perfect potion for aches and pains, but a uniquely buoyant place to go bathing!
Best part about this stop is the full range of facilities including change rooms, showers, toilets and a picnic area. So, don’t forget to pack your bathers, and some food, or you’ll be rushing back to home-base to grab them in no time!
While you’re coasting along the Drive, do yourself a favour and jump out at The Salmon Hole too, it’s intense aquamarine water and curving white sands have been dropping jaws for generations. Beachcombing around here is the stuff of legends, and whether you’re hitting the cliffs and dunes, this epic stretch of coastline just oozes coastal cool.
Locals also say there’s a kodak opportunity at Post Office Rock too, so park the car, throw on your thongs and take a closer look at this natural wonder.
Travelling in a 4WD and well prepared for offroad ? Head north through the Conservation Park through to stunning Nora Creina.
Beachport Jetty
**Currently Undergoing Maintenance, limited access***
It’s one of the longest jetties in South Australia, and this beauty always comes into its own in summer.
With nearly 1.5kms of the original 1882 structure still intact, it’s the perfect way to get your step count up for the day, and odds are you’ll find more than a few people strolling along this local icon, either with a fishing rod in hand, or jumping carelessly into the turquoise dream.
Reaching out like a giant outstretched hand into the pristine waters of Rivoli Bay, you’ll find scores of Salmon, Mullet, Mulloway and Whiting in these parts , and after a day of tight lines and big smiles, sticking around for sunset is a must.
Beachport Surf Beach.
If you’re keen for a dip in the big blue, then head out of town a couple of kms to Beachport Surf beach, where a sea of blue azure demands your attention.
With a gently shelving beach, and steady small surf, this is the spot to drag out the picnic mat, esky and park the family for the day for unlimited windsurfing, kite surfing, boogey-boarding, surfing or just a fresh cooling swim.
And if you’d rather not get wet, then add a few more steps to your pedometer along the shoreline for a meditative stroll (with or without the pooch!).
Beachport Old Wool & Grain Store Museum
With a pioneering and maritime history dating back to 1880s, a trip to Beachport wouldn’t be complete without taking a step back in time at the Old Wool and Grain Store Museum .
Carefully curated stories of the town’s rich maritime and settler history and pristinely preserved artefacts are shared with love by all who venture here, with local passionate historian’s keen to help you relive time gone by.
Lake George.
A hop, skip and jump out of town you’ll find yourself a stunning inland estuary, Lake George , a peaceful place to wander and observe the bounty of birdlife and creatures great and small – a photographer’s dream!
Well known for its consistently strong winds and glassy clear flat water, Lake George is the perfect place to windsurf , with sailing speeds in excess of 40 knots are commonly achieved.
If that’s not your thing, then a stroll along the designated walking track is a great way to stretch the legs, and a great activity for the whole family if you have kids in tow – who knows you may even catch some surfers in their element whilst you’re there.
Southend is a laid back holiday village and cray fishing port 15 minutes south of Beachport.
Throw in a fishing line from the jetty , hit the sands of Rivoli Bay or try sailing on a Rivoli Bay Sailing Club come and try day, before finishing the day with a meal with the locals at the Southend Community Club (Friday or Saturday nights, Oct – May).
Canunda National Park starts on the edge of town, and is home to epic 4WD adventures , stunning beaches and walking trails. Not to be missed is the Cape Buffon walking trail, a 2.5-kilometre loop track traversing some of the most rugged and spectacular coastal scenery in the region.
