Mr. Marlon Asher, the “Ganja Farmer” or “Cowboy” affectionately known to his friends is a native Trinidadian and is the first reggae sensation out of Trinidad & Tobago who is now one of the most sought out artist in the country! Marlon chose the name “Asher” which was derived from the 12 tribes of Israel and is the tribe that represents December; the spirit of Christ.

Since a youth, Marlon’s desire for music has always been undeniable. His messages are easily conveyed through the poignant lyrics in his songs “Blessings”, “Give Thanks & Praises”, “Love Of Jah” and “Settle Down”

Marlon Asher’s talent and ingenuity was released to the world in 2004 through his break through smash hit “Ganja Farmer” which swept Trinidad & Tobago and quickly took over the Caribbean and spread to the United States, Africa and Europe! Marlon’s 2nd huge hit “Ganja Cowboy” produced by Tru Reelz Production (who also produced “Laow the Ganja”) has also made a splash on the Caribbean community. Controversial yet captivating, the two songs together are both considered instant classics and anthems for all who can appreciate the benefits of “Ganja” proving so with a combined total of over 15 million views and downloads!

To date, Mr. Asher has toured all over the world. On November 1st, 2007, Marlon Asher took home the COTT Award (Copyright Organization of Trinidad & Tobago) for best Reggae/Dancehall Artist. It was Asher’s second nomination and his first win. The COTT award was the first award of recognition for his musical success by his country. In 2008, Marlon was also nominated a third time for his video “Shorty”

Recently, Marlon has signed with Clear Port Entertainment and through the efforts of his manager Judah (Tru Reelz Production) and tour manager Nathaniel (Three Cornerstone Management) he is now touring the United States. Currently he has sold out over 15 cities along side reggae band Slightly Stoopid powered by Live Nation and his popularity continues to grow daily! Marlon Asher is a Trinidadian reggae artist from Enterprise, Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago.  His first major hit was “Ganja Farmer”  which was released in 2006 and became an international reggae classic, known and played worldwide. Marlon later went on to release more popular reggae hits such as  “Fit and Strong” (2006), “Ganja Cowboy” (2011), “Babylon Brutality” (2015), and more recently “Mama Say” (2019), “Reggae Music” with Anthony B (2019), “Family Love” (2020), and “Use Me” (2021) .  He was awarded the COTT award (Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago) in 2019 for best reggae dancehall artist.

Marlon grew up in Enterprise, Trinidad & Tobago. In his youth he was a member of the Mount Ararat Spiritual Baptist Church Choir and later on he embraced the Rasta faith. Marlon Asher is a pioneer of the Trinidadian reggae movement. He has toured with other roots reggae artists such as Sizzla, Slightly Stoopid, Maxi Priest, Beenie Man, Capleton, Fortunate Youth, Pressure Busspipe, Matisyahu, Katchafire, Kottonmouth Kings and even the American R & B Sensation Boyz II Men.  Marlon did nine dates on the Slightly Stoopid’s 2019 amphitheater tour.  The highlight of this tour was a sold out show at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado. He has toured the US, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Canada, Africa and Europe. Marlon paved the way for other Trinidad artists such as Jah Melody, Khari Kill, I-Sasha, Jah Bami and many more.

In the last few years Marlon has been steadily recording.  He released two billboard top ten albums in 2019 , one was  “Rebirth”  with Vas Productions. This album includes features with Anthony B, Slightly Stoopid and Pressure Busspipe. This was his third full studio album. The other 2019 release was a various artist collaboration album called  “Life Of A Ghetto Youth Chapter 2”  on which Marlon did two songs. His earlier albums include  “Unconditional Love” (2006), “Illusions” (2015) “Life Of A Ghetto Youth” (2017).  Marlon does twelve of the eighteen songs on this collaboration album. Life of a Ghetto Youth chapter 1 and 2 raise awareness for gun violence and the hardships of Caribbean ghetto living.  For this project Marlon helped raise $30,000 for victims and survivors of gun violence in Trinidad and Jamaica.

Marlon has collaborated on recordings with some of the biggest reggae artists in the world including Sizzla, Anthony B, Slightly Stoopid, Pressure Busspipe, Fortunate Youth, Kottonmouth Kings, Don Corleon, Teflon Zinkfence and many more. These collaborations are raising Marlon’s career to the next level, increasing his exposure and fan base worldwide.

During the covid 19 shutdowns around the world, Marlon has been in the studio working on singles and his next album. The album is scheduled to be released early next year in 2022 with Vas Productions. Also in the works is “Life Of A Ghetto Youth Chapter 3” which is another collaboration album. In 2020 Marlon released two singles  “Family Love”  and  “Use Me”  which were produced by Cliff Manswell at his CKM Infinity Studio. Marlon has also been performing on live streams and on drive in shows with the band Slightly Stoopid. In April, 2021 Marlon performed on his first regular live show since the covid 19 lockdown started to a sold out crowd in Humboldt County, California. More live shows are booking for him as the pandemic declines. Marlon Asher is ever on the rise.

Two day event honors the impact of the Reggae on the River festival

Reggae on the River presents   Mateel Forever: Reggae Legacy with the Wailing Souls, Marlon Asher & Mystic Roots.   The event takes place Saturday August 13th  and August 14th at the Mateel Community Center, 59 Rusk Lane in Redway . Reggae Legacy honors the impact of the Reggae on the River festival has made both in Southern Humboldt County and on the global reggae scene for nearly four decades. A second day has been added that features a Humboldt County Reggae showcase with Judrum , Irie Rockerz , Mykal Somer , Seed and Soil , DJ’s Justone & Irie Adina . 

The event is all ages, doors are at 4:20pm.  Discounted tickets are on sale now for Saturday, August 13th for $30 in advance, tickets are $35 at the door. Sunday, August 14th tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  Two day, weekend passes are available for $40 now through Eventbrite . Children 12 and under admitted free. The event features food, vendors and a full bar serving those 21 and over.  

About the Wailing Souls:

Fusing the harmonies of Motown with the roots and dancehall sounds of reggae,    the  Wailing Souls  have ridden the crest of Jamaica’s music for more than four decades.   Lloyd “Pipe” McDonald  and  Winston “Bread” Mathews  as  The Wailing Souls   have been nominated for Grammy Awards on three occasions. The group scored hits with classic roots reggae tunes,  War  and  Bredda Gravlicious ,  Firehouse Rock,  and the 1992 SONY/BMG album and title track,  All Over The World.   The Wailing Souls were the first reggae group to appear on  The Tonight Show  during this period. 

Additionally, the group scored number one hits with  Things and Time, Jah Jah, Old Broom,  and  Shark Attack.  The Wailing Souls’   recording career has been nothing short of historic. Vocally trained by  Bob Marley and the Wailers’  teacher,  Joe Higgs , they worked with legendary reggae producers including  Coxsone Dodd  of  Studio One ,  Henry ‘Junjo’ Lawes ,  Channel One Studios ,  Delroy Wright ,  Lloyd ‘King’ Jammy’s ,  recording several early tunes at Bob Marley’s  Tuff Gong Studio .  

The Wailing Souls  attracted global attention when their music was featured in the 1993 Disney film,  Cool Runnings.  The soundtrack album was an international hit, selling nearly half a million copies worldwide. The Souls had four songs on this soundtrack including the hit,  Picky Picky Head.  Formed in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica, in the late-1960s, The  Wailing Souls   have experienced numerous transformations. Their discography (over 26 albums to date) includes singles recorded as  The Renegades ,  Pipe & the Pipers , and  Atarra .  Bread  appeared in the documentary  Marley  on the life of Bob Marley, recounting several important aspects of this reggae icon’s life.   Still one of the most powerful forces in Reggae,  The Wailing Souls   continue to tour globally and record new songs with the vigor that they had singing in Kingston’s Trench Town decades ago. The band has influenced the next generations of musicians playing reggae music, Sublime released the song “Pawn Shop” which was an interpolation of their original song “War Deh Round a John Shop”. 

The Wailing Souls have performed at numerous festivals on some of the world’s most prestigious stages including the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain and  Reggae on the River  in Humboldt County, California where they last appeared in  2018 .

About Mystic Roots: Formed when the members met in Chico, California this 5-piece band plays originals with two feet solidly in Reggae and adding elements of Hiphop, Pop and Rock to the mix. The band is consistently sharpening their evolving musical arrangements of vocal harmonies and occasional beatboxing that are enhanced by the groups’ female/male dynamic. The group has been together longer than most other California Reggae bands and have helped to define the “West Coast Reggae” genre. They’ve had over 4 million plays on their 2000 song “Pass The Marijuana”

Fronted by Nigerian drum wizard, JuDrum , Seed N Soil weaves a heavy reggae sound into the fabric of Nigerian Afro-beat.   Celebrating 14 years, the band is currently touring Northern California with a new stage show while keeping true to their rootsy foundation.

Irie Rockerz

Redway’s own reggae band, they formed in 2015 based on the shared vision of producers and songwriters Stevie Culture and Brody Forester to represent the ideals of the local community of  peace, love and unity combined with musicianship that is sure to get you dancing and having a good time. Stevie Culture is an accomplished recording artist from Jamaica who now calls Humboldt home, he sings lead vocals and plays drums with the band. Brody plays lead guitar and shares lead vocal duties, April Mae is on vocals.  

Hailing from the island of St. Kitts,  Mykal Somer  is a roots, rock, reggae artist with a sing-jay, chant style. Inspired by the musical lyrics of the great Bob Marley and Lucky Dube , his first album Element of Surprise was  released in 2005. Mykal has performed alongside with  artists such as Third World , Luciano,  Messenjah Selah, Joseph Israel and saxophonist/ producer  Dean Fraser . Additional single releases include “Try” featuring Travis B of Woven Roots .

Vas Productions, Marlon Asher looking to ‘put Reggae back on the map’ with new project

With more than a decade in the music business, Vas Productions has worked with some of the biggest names in the local music fraternity. Still, as a label that prides itself on excellence, Vas Productions is always looking to move to a higher level. With that in mind, the label embarked on its latest project.

SAFE, a 13-track compilation by Vas Productions’ very own Marlon Asher is set to feature the likes of Capleton, Taurus Riley, Sizzla and Masicka. According to Vas’ executive producer, Richardo Vasconcellos, the body of work will “put Reggae back on the map.”

“I definitely see this project by Marlon Asher called SAFE putting Reggae back on the map. The first single Diamonds and Gold is definitely a hit and expected to be the Reggae hit for 2023 and I’m not being bias. It features Taurus Riley and Capleton and the production and work that went into this song has really made it stand out above all. Thanks to Breadback Productions for making it possible,” he said.

Continuing, Vasconcellos said “Marlon Asher is signed to Vas Productions and we have collaborated with Don Corleonie to produce the 13-song album. Marlon Asher is a great artiste and what’s important to Vas Productions is the message in the music. As a label we only put out positive music that can uplift the people to live a positive life and this project will do that.”

Always thinking big, Vasconcellos says he believes the project has Grammy potential.

“Being produced by one of Jamaica’s biggest producers, Don Corleonie and executive produced by Vas Productions, we are definitely aiming to bring home a Grammy. When we started doing this project Don Corleonie said to me that we brought back a joy to him with the Reggae music and he was not gonna do the project unless he do it to the best of his ability,” he said. “The project has features from Sizzla, Masicka, Capleton, Tarrus Riley, J Boog, Luciano and Slightly Stoopid. Ten videos have been completed for the project so far so we’re expecting big things from this one.”

Vas Productions which is known for its musical series, Life of a Ghetto Youth, is looking to cement its place in the local music fraternity with the third installation of the project. Vasconcellos told Observer Online that Life of a Ghetto Youth 3 will be “Reggae-infused with a little Hip Hop vibe for the international market.”

“We have been working on the project for the last three years. Produced by Major Seven and executive produced by Vas Productions with features from Dexta Daps, Movado, Masicka, Sizzla, Capleton, Jah Cure, Bunji Garlin, Luciano, Dre Island, Kezmandi, Bugle, Munga, Jah Melody, Wyclef, Rapsody, Marlon Asher and Beenie Man, it is definitely something to look forward to.”

His earlier albums include “Unconditional Love” (2006), “Illusions” (2015) “Life Of A Ghetto Youth” (2017). Marlon does twelve of the eighteen songs on this collaboration album. “Life of a Ghetto Youth chapter 1 and 2” to raise awareness for gun violence and the hardships of Caribbean ghetto living. For this project Marlon helped raise $30,000 for victims and survivors of gun violence in Trinidad and Jamaica.

Marlon has collaborated on recordings with some of the biggest reggae artists in the world including Sizzla, Anthony B, Slightly Stoopid, Pressure Busspipe, Fortunate Youth, Kottonmouth Kings, Don Corleon, Teflon Zinkfence, and many more. These collaborations are raising Marlon’s career to the next level, increasing his exposure and fan base worldwide.

During the COVID-19 shutdowns, Marlon worked in the studio on singles for his upcoming album with Vas Productions scheduled for release on May 26, 2023. Also in the works is “Life Of A Ghetto Youth Chapter 3” which is another collaboration album. In 2020 Marlon released two singles “Family Love” and “Use Me” which were produced by Cliff Manswell at his CKM Infinity Studio. Marlon has been very busy on the front line performing in the US and abroad. Marlon Asher is ever on the rise gaining new fans day by day.
