Why Go To St. Kitts & Nevis

These lesser-known but luxurious twin islands in the southern Caribbean are breathtaking. St. Kitts and Nevis beckon to travelers looking for a mix of resort relaxation and picturesque landscapes with a touch of adventure and a dash of history. St. Kitts is the more outgoing sister, with the widest selection of restaurants, bars and hotels. Shy and lush Nevis showcases the opulence that has become this region's calling card.

Seclusion might be the No. 1 draw (Nevis doesn't have a single streetlight), but there are many other lures. Take, for example, the sloping greens of Royal St. Kitts Golf Club . You want culture? These islands have it – just check out the wintertime St. Kitts Carnival or the music festival held every June. And those with a penchant for history will certainly find it – Nevis is the birth island of founding father Alexander Hamilton; St. Kitts' imposing Brimstone Hill Fortress was once known as the "Gibraltar of the West Indies" and the St. Kitts Scenic Railway educates travelers on the area's sugar cane roots. Meanwhile, those who come strictly for the beach can relax with a good book on a number of white-sand oases, such as Oualie Beach and Frigate Bay .

St. Kitts & Nevis Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Kitts and Nevis is in May and June, when hotels lower their rates to lure in travelers and the winter crowds thin out. But the peak season – December to April – does host Carnival, a party that might be worth weaving through the droves of tourists. The crowds disperse again in the summer months when the islands experience the Atlantic hurricane season. And keep in mind St. Kitts and Nevis' average highs hover around 80 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

What You Need to Know

Take note of the competition St. Kitts and Nevis enjoy a bit of a sibling rivalry. The smaller island, Nevis, takes pleasure in its somewhat unfettered Caribbean ambiance, while St. Kitts seems to revel in its music-loving, Carnival-throwing, party-loving status.

Take note of your bill If gratuity isn't included on restaurant bills, a 15 percent tip is generally appropriate. Hotels can tack up to a 12 percent service charge on the bill.

Take note of your outfit Beach attire is appropriate on the beach, but nowhere else. Wearing even a covered-up swimsuit around town will mark you as a tourist.

How to Save Money in St. Kitts & Nevis

Pack your clubs If you plan on golfing, you should not only ship your clubs to your hotel, but also make sure to stay at a resort with its own course. Usually, the resort's green fees are waived for guests, and club rentals can cost upward of $50.

Pick the offseason Those looking to save on hotel accommodations should avoid visiting from December to April. Rates are sky-high during this peak season.

Pass on the sights Historical sightseeing isn't really worth the price of admission on the islands. Save yourself the change and spend it on some beachside drinks instead.

What to Eat

Traditional St. Kitts and Nevis restaurants offer a blend of Caribbean favorites. On both islands you'll find plenty of meat and seafood, including the much-beloved conch. Spicy dishes, including Jamaican-style jerk chicken, are also very popular. St. Kitts and Nevis have some of the finest fruits and vegetables in the Western Hemisphere, including pumpkins, peas and soursop, a sour, citrusy-like fruit. The islands also feature establishments serving Moroccan, Italian, Asian and Spanish fare.

The majority of eateries here are casual joints, dishing out flavorful food and cold drinks along the beach. Of the two islands, St. Kitts offers the better selection and experts suggest the restaurants in Basseterre. Recent visitors strongly recommend sampling the catch of the day at Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack Beach Bar and trying the fish tacos at Shipwreck Beach Bar and Grill. However, Nevis also offers its fair share of beloved eateries, including Turtle Time Beach Bar & Grill and Coconut Grove . Those looking for more upscale dining may want to visit the restaurants within some of the islands' best hotels .

Getting Around St. Kitts & Nevis

The best way to get around St. Kitts and Nevis is by taxi, which can be easily found in front of the islands' airports – Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) on St. Kitts and Vance W. Armory International Airport (NEV) on Nevis – as well as lined up at the cruise ship docks in Basseterre, and in front of most hotels and major attractions. Other options include the brightly painted minibuses or rental cars, although both can be limiting depending on your needs. When you're ready to island hop, private boat companies are available at Basseterre in St. Kitts and Charlestown in Nevis.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You'll need a passport (by air) that's valid for six or more months past your visit, or passport card (by sea), to enter and exit St. Kitts and Nevis. Customs officials might also ask you to provide proof of sufficient funds, as well as proof of a return or onward trip. Visits to St. Kitts and Nevis may not exceed three months without a visa. For more information on entry and exit requirements, please visit the U.S. State Department's website .

St. Kitts and Nevis both embody the idea of the typical Caribbean island, with soft sand, tall palm trees and brilliant blue water.

“My experience in St. Kitts” Review of St. Kitts

black rocks st kitts

The beaches have white sand and plenty of bars and resturants. Ziggys place on the beach in Frieget Bay, is one of the best Resturant/Bars, postioned about 50 ft from the water. The water is warm and blue. There is also Turtle Beach, a short distance from Freiget Bay. Some of the sites to see is Brimstone Hill, an old fort build by slave labor when the Brittish and French occupied the island. The island is approximately 65 miles in diameter with 34,000 residents. The rain forrest walk is great if you like to walk and do a little climbing. The island has four large resorts on it with several smaller ones. Plenty of resturants but no Wal-Mart for those who like to shop. All the shops are specialty shops with only one or two types of goods (plastic, lumber, clothes, electronics). The cab drivers are great and are really reasonable on their fares. The two I had contact with the most was Trevone of Trevones taxi service and Roy's taxi service. It is advisable to take a taxi instead of renting a car. They drive on the opposite side of the street as Americans do. The currency is US dollars or EC's (Eastern Carribean dollars) which is 2.69 to one US dollars. The temperature is a constant 85 degrees and it rains one a day for five to fifteen minutes , that is usually the extent of the rain. Nevis is across the bay with access by Ferry.

As a student at the Veterinary school here on Saint Kitts, I actually LIVE on the island, so I thought I'd give a few tips to those who are coming here! The Marriot is a verrrryy nice place to be, from what I've seen. I go there often for dinner, coffee, etc. It's nice to get an american-feel but still be in the Caribbean. The food at the Marriot is pretty good, a little to "american-ized", but for me thats a nice plus since I dont get to go home often. If you would like a taste of the island, I recommend the Sunset Cafe over by Timothy Beach (where's shiggidy shack and the beach bars are). Service is relatively slow, but you can expect that everywhere on this island. I know it can be annoying, but thats the lifestyle here, and its a nice relaxing change. I just recommend asking for beverages well in advance if you think your going to be running out, and ask for the check early. Other restaurants I recommend is Chao, its an italian restaurant right down the street from the marriot. Pretty authentic, service is once again somewhat slow, but the food is really good. Jambos - after the first round about on the right. Very good seafood/mexican-type orientated food. Prices are reasonable, and I really enjoy every time I go there. Frigate bay resort has a restaurant in it called Jasmines. It's a little fancier, food is a bit more expensive, but very good!! If your looking for some fun nightlife, Ziggys is the place to be. Friday afternoons/evenings are one of the best nights to go there. However, most of the veterinary students/nursing students are there so if you want somewhere quiter or low key this is not the place. Drinks are reasonably priced here also. Wednesday night alot of people go to Sugars, which is a bar/casino (slots) and pool tables and all that fun stuff. I highly recommend snorkeling on the reefs here in Saint Kitts. They are beauiful!! Especially right out by the marriot beach. I've seen alot of really cool fish/sea turtles/sting rays etc. Definately one of my most favorite things to do on the island. All in all saint kitts and the Marriot are very nice places to be. Just come here with relaxation and the idea of taking things slow and you should be fine. Try not to get upset with slow service, your on vacation - enjoy the change of pace!!! =)

St. Kitts is a lovely island to visit, lots of greenery, monkeys, cows, goats and even chickens in downtown area. I stayed at Timothy Beach, room was very nice with ocean view. Beach Bars and wonderful, some do not close until last customer is gone. Taxi driver Roosevelt Taylor is a gem to the island, always there on time to pick you up. Lovely place to take a relaxing vacation.

My husband, sons (21, 17, 15) and I spent a week in St. Kitts from December 22 until December 29th and had a wonderful time. Here are some tips. We rented a villa. Easy to do by going to [--]. For a family who would otherwise have to book 2 rooms at least to accomodate our family, it made so much more sense. We had a kitchen to make breakfast and sometimes lunch and saved $$$ and avoided the endless looking-for-meals loop. St. Kitts is an island in the process of changing. The sugar cane industry only ended 2 years ago. They have only begun to shift to ecotourism and it shows. Kittitians aren't overly friendly, but on the other hand, there is no hustling, either. We felt safe wherever we went on the island and we pretty much went everywhere. The poverty rate is high -- 30 percent -- and the government is corrupt. There is a lot of land going to foreign developers rather than local developers, which doesn't bode well for the future. That said, enjoy the island while it's still relatively undeveloped and still has aspects of the old Caribbean. We stayed in a villa on a hill on Frigate Bay looking out over the Caribbean towards Nevis. Breathtaking views. At this part of the island, the Atlantic side and the Caribbean side are only about a 10 minute walk apart, and so you have a choice of either type of beach -- windy or calm. The Marriott is the biggest hotel on the island, and it is BIG. Their beach has imported white sand, chairs, and palapa huts. Even if you don't stay at the Marriott, they are welcoming. You can use the beach, the pool, have drinks at the beach bar, play in the casino, and take advantage of the tourism adventure trips -- such as rain forest hike, volcano climb, etc. There's a desk in the front lobby where you can sign up. Not a problem at all if you aren't staying there. The only time we had a problem using the beach was the day a cruise ship boat pulled in and they weren't allowing anyone who wasn't staying at the Marriott to use the beach, so the kids just entered the beach further down, instead of through the lobby. There are some locals on the beach who will approach you and ask if you'd like to have your feet massaged with aloe. If you don't want that, be firm, they will go away. But don't stick to the Marriott, beachwise. Wherever you stay, rent a car and explore. At the southern tip of the island are beautiful beaches, some with bustling beach shacks, some absolutely empty. Turtle Beach has a nice beach shack with monkeys, a big pig and decent food. Cockleshell Beach is usually empty, has no beach shack, but it's on the Caribbean side and calm, warm and beautiful for swiming. Sundown Beach is also on the Caribbean side and has a very welcoming bare bones beach bar, nice to watch the sun go down here. Timothy Beach is the most built up with a string of beach bars/restaurants, shacks. The first being Mr. X's Shiggety Shack. Lively and touristy. Everyone from the Marriott and some of the smaller places to stay at this end of the island goes here. Not for the locals. But they have a bonfire on Thursday nights which our boys really liked a lot. The Monkey Bar was nice, with a friendly owner. Spend a day driving around the island. Definitely visit Fort Brimstone. It's an amazing fort built on a volcanic butte. The views -- to Saba and St. Eustatious -- are beautiful. The Golden Lemon is a lovely place to eat -- not so sure about staying there as it's pretty remote -- at the northern tip of the island where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet. We had lunch there on Christmas Eve day and the food was delicious, the service attentive and friendly and even the 3 older boys were charmed. The beach is very interesting. Black sand. When wet, it is viscous. The kids had a good rubdown with it. Around the other side of the island is Ottley Plantation. We had Christmas Eve dinner there and it was even nicer than we expected. Delicious food, friendly, spot-on service, beautiful setting, and hugs and merry christmas's for all of us on our way out. We were raving about it for days. If you go there at night, make sure you return during the day to view the grounds. Spectacular. Okay. Christmas season in St. Kitts is also Carnival season. The day after Christmas is J'ouvert. (pronounced "joovay") This is when the capital of St. Kitts -- Basse Terre -- fills up with everyone, drinking rum, and dancing to calypso music blasting from flat bed trucks being pulled around the town squares' by tractors. It is the most fun I've had since I went to punk clubs in the 70s. Seriously. We started the day -- Boxing Day, December 26th -- at the Ballyhoo. Someone we met at a local bar told us that the thing to do was to go to the Ballyhoo, a bar/restaurant that's located on the Circus, one of the traffic circles, and sit on the balcony and order breakfast and a beer. We arrived at 7:30 and did just that and watched as the trucks came through. Then we went down into the crowd and danced. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, happy to see us there, even though, as tourists, we were very much in the minority. I danced by myself, and some of the locals, for a while. We saw very few other tourists. My husband and I and our youngest left after a while and our older boys stayed for quite a while longer. When we picked them up later they told us they'd gone back to the Ballyhoo after dancing and standing in the hose spray for a while -- one street was blocked off for spray down! -- and spent time talking to a young woman who worked for the Peace Corps in St. Kitts. Sincemy oldest is thinking of doing the same, it was a great meeting for him. Let's see, what else? Other restaurants. I'm disappointed we didn't get to go to Marshall's or Sprat Net -- which is just north of Basseterre, which is supposed to be a very good local seafood restaurant. It looks like a shack, don't be put off. We took some great tours with O'Neill via the Marriott. A rainforest hike and a plantation/sugar cane history tour. The two younger boys climbed the volcano and raved about it. Only regret is that we didn't stay through January 2nd. We could have gone to Nevis for the horse race, and BasseTerre for "last lap," which is the end of the Carnival and is basically just another j'ouvert. It helped very much that we were staying in a villa owned by a local family and they were able to give us great advice about where to go. Also -- food is very expensive on the island. If you are going to stay at a villa, ship food down with you. You can box items up and check them with your luggage. You will save lots of money that way. We shipped down a turkey (in a thermal pack with some ice packs) for Christmas day dinner and it was still frozen by the time we arrived. Also -- there is nothing like driving around listening to Christmas Carols in calypso. I think all of us agreed that it was a Christmas we will never forget, maybe one of our best Christmas's ever, and we would go back again in a heart beat. I had been to Nevis before -- and visited for a day this time around -- and enjoyed it, but St. Kitts at Carnival time is an awesome thing.

Returned last night from a week at the Marriott St. Kitts. First I will talk about the hotel and then the Island. We have stayed at a lot of Marriott's all over the world. This property is beautiful and immaculate. They were always cleaning and landscaping. They gave us a garden ocean suite with an ocean view, although I heard from others there on special occasions who couldn't get upgraded. Our rooms were always cleaned in a timely manner with good service. There is the main pool with hundreds of pool chairs. If you feel this is too crowded there are 2 large quieter pools. We liked the action, music and pool bar at the main pool. On the beach there are 98 professionally roofed cabanas. Even if it rains you don't get wet. We felt the men on the island were very friendly. But in our opinion the women are very serious and reserved. I think I would have tipped them more if they were friendly. We did not do the all inclusive and talked with others who got tired of it after several days. We ate at LaCunia (Italian) it was good, not great. We would return to the Marriott again, just wish the women were more friendly. Now for the outside dining we did: Island Spice was OK, went to Rawlins plantation for the West Indies lunch it was delicious, they were very friendly and the grounds simply beautiful. Bobsey's fun atmosphere. Our favorites were Marshall's (ate there twice), it was superb. And for a no frills isand experience, we loved Mr. X's Shiggity shack. A whole lobster $20, and some of the best red snapper we've ever had $18. A great island experience. Monkey bar is great for drinks but being next door to Mr. X they are more expensive and much smaller portions. We asked if they could substitute the french fries and they gave us pasta. On our bill they charged $8 for the substitution!!!! We almost died. Turtle Beach food was good but also pricey for lunch. Now for the beaches: I felt the Marriott beach is very nice. Even with the Atlantic Ocean the water was calm and clear. People have talked about walking over to Frigate Bay Resort for the Carribean side. I didn't feel like it was much nicer. A lot of seaweed, also at Turtle Beach (yes the annoying tractor was there cleaning up the seaweed. The Taxi ride is $20 each way. Beach not a lot nicer than the others but whiter sand. But don't go to St. Kitts for the sand. There are lots better places. But seeing the monkeys at Turtle Beach is fun, views of Nevis great. Our favorite was Friar's beach. If you are very athletic run up the big hill or power walk and then wind down the mountain to the beach. You will see unbelievable views and we saw lots of wild monkeys along the way. A definite don't miss is the catarmaran tour to Nevis. We went with Blue Water they were very funny and entertaining. Lots of food and drink. I would probably do it 2 times if I could. Did the Island tour with our taxi driver Leroy. Cheaper than with the tours. He charged $120 for 5 hours and waited while we ate at Rawlins. But another couple said they paid $60 for 4 hours. So shop around. Also don't go to St. Kitts for the shopping, not much there. The Marriott stores are nice but very pricey!! We really enjoyed St. Kitts and would go again, but go soon!!!! Lots of condo and hotels to be built in the next year.

Coming from SFO, we had a layover in Miami and decided to spend the night there before heading to St. Kitts and Nevis in the morning. We think when traveling with the little ones, staying overnight at your stopover city is a little easier, rather than spending hours at an airport and taking the next flight right away. Luckily, Hyatt Place Miami Airport-East is literally right across from the Miami International Airport, and in addition to a place to rest, it even offered amenities such as a pool.

Customs and Immigration

You must fill out the immigration arrival form on the official website and provide a QR code at customs before exiting Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport (SKB). One form can be filled out per family, and we completed it before our departure.

💡 Good to know What kind of SIM card do we use on our international trips? During our recent trips to St. Kitts and Nevis, Costa Rica, and Colombia, we used an eSIM from Airalo and paid only $15 for 2GB. It was so easy to activate, and having data without relying solely on hotel Wi-Fi was definitely a game changer.

Transportation

Taxi dispatcher kiosk at Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport (SKB)

When arriving in St. Kitts and Nevis, you might first wonder how to get to your hotel. Fortunately, right outside the airport, there is a taxi dispatcher kiosk that will arrange your transportation to the desired destination.

We noticed that all the taxis were vans, allowing you to fit your luggage and 6-8 people comfortably with no problem.

Another thing to keep in mind is that taxi services are cash only; it would be around 45 USD for a 25-minute ride. We could easily pay in U.S. dollars, confirming the price before our ride.

At Mount Nevis Hotel, Nevis

The local currency in St. Kitts and Nevis is Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), and 1 East Caribbean Dollar equals 0.37 USD. U.S. dollars and credit cards are largely accepted at most businesses, and we did not have a need to exchange them for local currency.

As always, remember to use a Credit Card with no foreign transaction fees, so you will not have to pay extra fees when using your credit card (such as Chase Sapphire Preferred).

Where to stay in St. Kitts and Nevis

The pool at Park Hyatt St. Kitts

There are dozens of hotels and vacation rentals in St. Kitts and Nevis, varying from simple to luxurious accommodations. If you want to stay on points, one option is Park Hyatt St. Kitts on the southern tip of Saint Kitts. You can read more about our stay at Park Hyatt St. Kitts here .

St. Kitts and Nevis has a typical tropical climate with warm and humid conditions. The hurricane season usually starts in June and ends in December. Although the locals said it hadn’t properly rained for the last few years, with just occasional 15-minute showers, it rained for the whole day on one of the days during our stay in early April.

Things to do in St. Kitts and Nevis

Go to the beach.

Banana Bay Beach, St. Kitts and Nevis

Now, the beaches in St. Kitts are mostly mixed with volcanic sand (aka not white coral-based sand). Both islands resulted from volcanic activity and now are homes to dormant Mount Liamuiga (on St. Kitts) and Nevis Peak (on Nevis). If you feel like it, I can also hike to the summit of the volcanoes through the rainforest.

The beach in Nevis

Nonetheless, St. Kitts and Nevis offer some fantastic beaches with clear turquoise water. To name a few, our favorites were – Banana Bay Beach in St. Kitts and Pennies Beach in Nevis. When we visited in early April, the water felt great and was around 82°F.

Go kayaking and snorkeling

travel with kitts reviews

When in St. Kitts and Nevis, we absolutely recommend going kayaking in the sea. Well, technically, we were cruising the Narrows, the Channel between Nevis and St. Kitts. It definitely was more challenging than kayaking on the lake, which we have done many times before, but riding salty turquoise waves overlooking the green hills of Nevis was one of the highlights of our trip.

Luckily, the hotel we stayed at, Park Hyatt St. Kitts , offered complimentary kayak rentals, so we did not have to seek these services at other beaches.

Take a scenic train ride

St. Kitts Scenic Railway

We have heard many stories about the famous St. Kitts Scenic Railway and were excited to experience this scenic ride ourselves. This tour lasts about 3 hours and starts in Basseterre, circling St. Kitts.

St. Kitts Scenic Railway

Thus, before our stay, we emailed the office to confirm the available date and time for two adults and two kids.

Alas, the weather had other plans on the day of our ride, and the tour had to be canceled, even though everyone kept hopes up and even let us on a train and provided complimentary drinks. I guess we have one more reason to return to St. Kitts now.

Take a boat/ferry ride from St. Kitts to Nevis

A charter boat from St. Kitts to Nevis

You can take a boat or a ferry ride from St. Kitts to Nevis. This is an excellent option for a day trip or to split your vacation into staying at both islands.

Since we were staying on the very southern tip of St. Kitts, we took a short boat ride to Nevis on the Narrows – the strait separating Saint Kitts and Nevis.

💡 Good to Know Fun fact: St. Kitts and Nevis has a Cross Channel Swim between the two islands! It starts from Oualie Beach on Nevis, traveling across the Narrows for a finish at Cockleshell Beach on St. Kitts! The locals said they welcome people from around the world and usually are not “as crazy as foreigners to take part in that” 🤣.

Visit the Timothy Hill Overlook

One of the most spectacular panoramic views you can witness in St. Kitts and Nevis is at Timothy Hill Overlook. When standing at the overlook, you can see how the island of Saint Kitts is locked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

The good news is that you do not need to hike to the top of the mountain and can simply drive up to the spot to take this iconic picture.

Visit a former sugar plantation

For centuries the little islands of Nevis and St. Kitts harvested sugar cane and were covered in sugar plantations. These days, most former plantation houses were restored and converted into inns.

Try local food

What is local Kittian and Nevisian Caribbean food? It is conch fritters, stewed saltfish, coconut dumplings, lobster, goat water, and many more.

Conch fritters, St. Kitts and Nevis

When visiting Nevis, we saw a bunch of goats and sheep wandering on the streets, but these animals were domesticated and belonged to families. Our tour guide mentioned that goat meat is a fairly popular choice of meat. One of the popular dishes with a goat is goat water – a special soup/stew.

Since the islands have a warm and humid climate, various fruit trees thrive in fertile soil. The islands are famous for their numerous types of mangos, guavas, and cantaloupes.

If you are in St. Kitts on a Friday night, Reggae Beach Bar & Grill is the place to be!

Just picture yourself on the beach, when your table is set on the sand, the sun is setting, and there is live music. Then you’re served freshly caught grilled lobsters (and a choice of other four types of meat) paired with a rum punch; what a perfect night!

Spot wild monkeys

Green monkey in St. Kitts and Nevis

Did you know there are wild African green monkeys in St. Kitts and Nevis? Those animals are way bigger than we imagined and are not actually native to the islands! They were introduced by the French during the colonization period and were used as pets!

Despite being very cute, these monkeys are a significant threat to local agriculture and are considered an invasive species. The monkeys thrive on the islands without a natural predator and multiply their population year after year.

Bottom line

St. Kitts and Nevis is a stunning Caribbean island destination that offers an exciting mix of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its pristine beaches, luxurious accommodations, and vibrant local cuisine, there is something for everyone to enjoy. This charming island nation promises a memorable vacation experience for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Travel Guide to St. Kitts and Nevis – How, Where & Frequently Asked Questions

This beautiful country is located in the continent of the Caribbean. Explore it by reading this travel guide to St Kitts and Nevis we have for you!

St. Kitts and Nevis is a sovereign state with the British monarch as the head of the state. The island is also the smallest sovereign state in the region. St. Kitts and Nevis’s nation is among the first few countries in the Caribbean to be invaded by the Europeans. As a matter of fact, it used to be a colony of the British and French.

The two islands that make up the tiny nation of St Kitts and Nevis are often referred to as sisters. Both the islands have lush landscapes, including rainforests, natural beauty, well-preserved ecosystems, low humidity, white-sand beaches , and tastefully designed resorts make these tranquil islands two of the Caribbean’s most appealing destinations. Big sister St. Kitts is by far the most visited; however, it’s still possible to find untamed scenery in its trio of mountain ranges . Meanwhile, little sister Nevis is a sleepy getaway perfect for leaving your worries behind.

Even though the larger island of St. Kitts and the smaller island of Nevis are only separated by a few miles of calm Caribbean waters they are much alike. St. Kitts has become a tourist hot spot while Nevis depends more on day-trippers from the larger island. Unless you visit both islands you wouldn’t realize how much they actually have in common. For starters, both islands have miles of sandy beaches with rainforests leading up to a dormant volcano at the center of the island.

Why St Kitts deserves a spot on your Caribbean bucket list

This less-travelled gem offers volcanic peaks, stop-in-your-tracks beaches, a rich history and opportunity aplenty for adventure

why visit st kitts

So, when I got the opportunity to return to paradise shores and visit St Kitts this year, naturally, I jumped at the chance. Unlike some of its better-known Caribbean counterparts, the tiny two-island nation – the smallest country in the Americas, FYI – has an uncrowded allure and plenty to offer beyond all-inclusive resorts and fly-and-flop breaks.

Draped in lush rainforest and crowned by the mighty 3,972ft volcanic peak of Mount Liamuiga, St Kitts boasts superb hiking, footprint-free beaches, historic sights and characterful bars, plus direct flights from London and the opportunity to visit its sleepier sister isle Nevis. It’s made for those who want to venture beyond the region’s usual suspects and explore local culture, as well as laze by the pool.

Sound like your cup of tea? Here are our highlights, including what to do, where to stay and how to get there…

So, where to begin?

Of course, you could make a beeline for the beach, but I’d suggest shaking off the jet lag and making the most of the island’s lush, verdant interior with a rainforest hike.

st kitts rainforest tour

We meet our guide O’Neil Mulraine at Wingfield Estate, home to old sugar mill ruins and the first working rum estate and distillery in the Caribbean. The site has been painstakingly restored by Yorkshireman Maurice Widdowson, allowing visitors to discover the impressive remains and learn about the island’s turbulent colonial past.

We leave the estate behind as O’Neil guides us through jumbles of greenery into the dense rainforest. It’s a relief to escape the scorching midday sun and bask in the shade of mango, tamarind and almond trees. O’Neil has been leading tours here for over forty years and his botanical knowledge shines through, as he introduces us to many of St Kitts’ most important plants and their medicinal properties, which have been used for centuries to cure all sorts of ailments.

In the mood for adventure? You can live out your best Tarzan fantasies and plunge through the rainforest canopy on an exhilarating zip line with Sky Safaris . We skip the thrill-seeking and head back to Wingfield for a masterclass in rum.

old road rum wingfield estate, st kitts

In 2020, Maurice’s son Jack founded the Old Road Rum Company , on a mission to reclaim the island’s past and bring back rum distillation to the island. For now, it’s crafted from imported batch rum, aged for 12 years then blended and bottled.

I get my first taste in a glorious nutmeg-dusted rum punch, which I sip a little too quickly as we tour the preserved aqueduct, chimney, boiling house, mill house and lime kiln. Feeling a little woozy, I’m grateful for the bowl of plantain chips plonked next to me as we start the tasting.

Hit the strip

Now that you’ve got a taste for rum, make your way to “The Strip”, which borders South Frigate Bay. Here, you’ll find a row of rum bars, beach shacks and casual restaurants where laid-back Kittitians gather to eat, drink and “lime” (local slang for socialising).

a sign on a beach

We nab a spot at the aptly-named Boozies on the Beach, and savour ice-cold bottles of Carib beer and frozen mango margaritas, soundtracked by the lapping waves and soulful reggae beats. With the sand beneath my toes and the tropical sun beating down on my face, I find it all too easy to get into the limin' spirit.

We rock up on a Tuesday afternoon, so the atmosphere is relatively mellow. If you want to experience the island’s party scene in all its glory, Friday and Saturday nights are your best bet, when the strip comes alive with bonfires, barbecues and live reggae and soca music into the early hours.

Catamaran cruise to Nevis

No visit to St Kitts is complete without a day trip to Nevis. You can catch a public ferry or water taxi over to the pint-sized island, but a catamaran cruise is a fun way to do it. We opt for a half-day tour with Leeward Island Charters which includes snorkelling stops, an open bar and a beach lunch in Nevis.

st kitts travl guide

As we sail across the cobalt waters, watching palm-lined beaches and rugged mountains roll by, I stretch out on the upper deck feeling utterly relaxed. After an hour or so, we don our snorkels and float weightlessly in the still waters, surrounded by all kinds of tropical fish and multi-hued coral. It’s the perfect morning.

Before long, Nevis’ dramatic volcanic peak comes into view and we drop anchor at Pinney’s Beach, which is lined with a collection of multicoloured beach bars and shacks. We head straight to Sunshine’s Beach Bar & Grill, which, apparently, is the place to be. Previous visitors include Beyonce, Jay Z and Oprah no less.

sunshine's bar and grill nevis

We’re lucky enough to meet the vivacious owner, Sunshine, who insists on sending an array of specialities over to our table. We feast on fluffy rice, smoky kidney beans, grilled snapper and the best mac and cheese I’ve tried, washing it down with the bar’s legendary Killer Bee cocktail. The exact recipe is a highly guarded secret, but rest assured, it contains a hefty measure of rum – no more than two glasses is advisable, according to locals.

A farm-to-table experience at Liamuiga Natural Farm

If an authentic culinary experience is what you’re after, St Kitts won’t disappoint. While many Caribbean tourist hotspots have been heavily influenced by US culture in recent years, the island has stayed true to its roots and its unpretentious eateries serve up local classics. We’re talking spicy goat water stew, crispy conch fritters, sweet coconut dumplings, fried plantain and the juiciest grilled lobster you’ve ever tasted.

For a real foodie experience, Liamuiga Natural Farm , a family-owned coffee and citrus plantation set high in the rainforest, is not to be missed. Here, guests are invited to learn about the farm’s organic practices and discover the vast array of fruit and veg grown on site (guavas, passion fruits, coconuts and green bananas) with the tour culminating in a farm-to-table feast.

st kitts travel guide

After a steep climb into the thick rainforest, winding round tight hairpin bends and passing mango-stealing monkeys, our ex-military truck pulls up at the plantation. “It’s time for breakfast, I hope you’re hungry!” our guide Kerryn “Tiem” Williams exclaims.

On a communal wooden table, we’re presented with a colourful spread created entirely from the farm’s produce. I pile my banana leaf (no plates here) high with pumpkin pancakes and papaya jam, breadfruit salad, ackee, saltfish and aubergine ratatouille, unable to resist rounds two and three, even though I know we’ll be eating again within the hour.

liamuiga farm tour st kitts

Our bellies full, Williams talks us on a stroll around the site, showing us some of the ingredients used in our breakfast, as well as pointing out pineapples, mangos, green bananas, avocados, limes and all kinds of squash. Then, it’s back to the table for a three-course lunch, which includes vegetable broth with a zingy chilli sauce, poached fish, salad and the creamiest coffee ice cream I’ve ever tasted.

Anything else I should do?

If your weary legs are tired after all that activity, then a trip to the beach is in order. Cockleshell Bay, on the island’s south peninsula is considered one of the finest, with a long stretch of golden-yellow sand, warm waters and sweeping views over to Nevis. Turtle beach, which is protected from the choppy Atlantic waves, provides excellent snorkelling, while South Bank Bay on the eastern tip of the island is ideal for those who prefer to venture off the beaten track.

st kitts travel guide

For history buffs, there’s Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park , a sprawling hilltop defence set up by British forces in the 1690s and now a Unesco World Heritage Site. You could easily spend a whole day here, touring the well-preserved fortress and extensive military museum and taking in the panoramic views across neighbouring St Barths, Saba and Stasia.

St Kitts Scenic Railway , which takes passengers on an 18-mile ride around the north coast of the island, is an excellent, low-key way to see the island. The narrow gauge line is the only working railway in the Caribbean and was used to transport sugar cane from the plantations to the mills until 2005, when the industry shut down. Now, tourists can enjoy a two-hour ride on the historic double-decker train, with guided commentary, drinks and entertainment included.

Where should I stay?

Belle mont sanctuary resort at kittitian hill.

st kitts belle mont sanctuary

Set high up in the hills, surrounded by lush greenery and wild inhabitants, Belle Mont is a paradise for nature lovers. There are 40 cottages and villas in total, each with its own private plunge pool and open-air bathroom, complete with a toilet, shower and freestanding tub. Panic not, privacy isn’t an issue – the cottages are enveloped in strategically planted palms, allowing you to drink in the sweeping sea views, with only butterflies, jungle frogs and perhaps the odd vervent monkey for company.

The hotel’s main restaurant, The Kitchen, is a destination within itself. The food philosophy is farm-to-fork (the fruit, veg and herbs are all grown on the estate and the fish and meat is all local too) with a focus on authentic Caribbean flavours. Think saltfish fritters, pickled pineapple and aubergine, Mahi-Mahi with papaya chutney, rice and peas, plus tongue-tinglingly delicious desserts like sweet potato pie and carrot cake. Just incredible.

Park Hyatt St Kitts

park hyatt st kitts

For beachside luxury with a side of Caribbean charm, head to Park Hyatt St Kitts . The five-star is perfectly positioned on Banana Bay, a curve of flawless beach with calm crystalline waters. Rooms (there are 126 in total) are airy and modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies or patios with vistas over the manicured lawns and glittering sea. Top level rooms also boast private plunge pools and sundecks. The food is a delight, whether you opt for the lavish breakfast buffet, a seafood-heavy lunch at the Fisherman’s Village or a fancy fine dining experience at Stone Barn. Service is slick and the staff are warm, friendly and attentive, without overdoing it.

The sprawling resort is a top choice if you have children in tow – there’s a large kid-friendly pool overlooking the sea, a complimentary kids’ club and myriad daily activities from kayak lessons to movie screenings. While the little ones are occupied, parents can laze on a sunlounger by the adults-only pool, head to the Sugar Mill spa for a pampering treatment or take advantage of the hotel’s water taxis and explore the island’s surroundings.

Rooms at Park Hyatt St. Kitts start from $375 (plus taxes) per room per night on a room only basis. Book here

When to visit

Peak season runs from December to April, when the weather is at its best (warm, clear and dry) but the prices are higher. Rates are cheaper during summer and autumn when it’s hotter, stickier and wetter. Hurricane season officially runs from June to November, with the highest risk in August and September and October.

If you visit at the end of June, your trip will coincide with the legendary St Kitts Music Festival , which has drawn household names over the years including Shaggy, Jason Derulo, Sean Paul and Shaggy. Mary J Blige is on the line-up this year. December is also a great time to visit if you want to soak up the party atmosphere, as St Kitts Carnival (known as Sugar Mas), is in full swing from mid-December to the beginning of January.

How to get there

British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick to St Kitts twice weekly, with return flights starting from £506 per person. The flight is around ten hours and includes an hour-long stopover in Antigua each way, but you don’t have to disembark. Book here

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Passports and visa:  U.S. citizens must have a valid U.S. passport to enter Saint Kitts and Nevis. No visa is required for stays up to 90 days if you have an onward or return ticket, confirmation of accommodation, and can produce evidence of your ability to maintain yourself.

Generally, all U.S. citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport when traveling to Saint Kitts and Nevis, as well as proof of anticipated departure from Saint Kitts and Nevis. This includes travelers arriving by airplane and by private sea-going vessel. Those traveling to Saint Kitts and Nevis on a cruise may use another Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant document. However, we strongly recommend visitors obtain a passport before travel in case of an unforeseen emergency that requires a cruise passenger to disembark and return by air.

HIV/AIDS:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Please contact the  Embassy of Saint Kitts and Nevis  before you travel for more information.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Crime:  U.S. citizens are not specifically targeted for crime in the Eastern Caribbean islands. However, crimes of opportunity such as petty larceny, burglary, automobile break-ins; as well as incidents of violent crime, such as murder, sexual assault, robbery, shootings, and drug related crimes do occasionally occur. As you would in any major metropolitan area of the U.S., use the below personal security measures while traveling:

  • Do not leave valuables unattended in public areas, on beaches, unsecured in hotel rooms, or in rental homes.
  • Avoid walking alone, especially at night, on beaches, and in isolated or poorly lit locations.
  • Go out in groups or with a companion and limit nighttime activities to established safe and reputable venues.
  • Use only clearly marked taxis and avoid rides with strangers.
  • Stick to well-lit and well-traveled routes.
  • Avoid displaying flashy jewelry, expensive electronics, and large amounts of cash.
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you see something suspicious or unusual contact local police to report immediately.
  • Use added caution when shopping in crowded areas, especially during the holiday season.
  • Use added caution when attending crowded events, celebrations, music festivals, etc.
  • Do not leave drinks unattended in public venues as this could create a potential vulnerability for the use of “date rape” drugs in furtherance of criminal activity.
  • Do not be predictable; vary your daily routes and schedules.
  • Do not engage in illegal activity.
  • For boaters: Be wary of unfamiliar persons or crafts approaching your boat, whether at anchor or at sea.

*Abide by the above security measures at all times, be aware of your surroundings in all areas, and use added vigilance while in isolated areas where tourists do not normally frequent.

Firearms: Do not enter Saint Kitts and Nevis with firearms or ammunition without prior express consent from the government of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Please contact the  Embassy of Saint Kitts and Nevis  before you travel.

See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local police at 911 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (246) 227-4000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical
  • support in cases of destitution
  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance at (246) 227-4000.

Watersports Advisory:  Carefully assess the potential risks of recreational water activities and consider your physical capabilities and skills. Never venture out alone, particularly at isolated beaches or far out to sea. Avoid entering the water above your waist if you have been drinking. Always be mindful of jet ski and boat traffic in the area.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, hospitals are able provide urgent medical treatment, though very serious injuries often require medical evacuation. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs or firearms are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Firearms: Do not enter Saint Kitts and Nevis with firearms or ammunition without prior express consent from the government of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Please contact the  Embassy of Saint Kitts and Nevis  before you travel.

Faith-Based Travelers: See the following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers: The law criminalizes consensual same-sex sexual activity between men, which carries a penalty up to 10 years in prison, but there is relaxed enforcement of this law. The law does not prohibit sexual activity between women. There are no laws that prohibit discrimination against a person on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  Access to buildings, pedestrian paths and transportation is extremely difficult for persons with mobility issues. Sidewalks (if they exist) are very uneven and will only occasionally have ramps at intersections. Pedestrian crossings are also very infrequent and can be poorly marked. Buses and taxis do not have special accommodations.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers: See our travel tips for Women Travelers .

The U.S. government does not pay medical bills for overseas travelers.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare and Medicaid programs do not apply overseas. We strongly recommend travelers obtain  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Medical facilities in Saint Kitts and Nevis do not meet U.S. standards, and medical transport can take hours to respond. St. Kitts has two hyperbaric chambers.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the government of  Saint Kitts and Nevis  to ensure the medication is legal in Saint Kitts and Nevis

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has reported past or current transmission of the following diseases:

  • Chikungunya

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Major roads are in average to poor condition, and drivers may encounter wandering animals and slow moving heavy equipment. Drivers often stop in the middle of the roadway without warning, so you should always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and watch for signs of sudden braking. Automobiles may lack working safety and signaling devices.

Please refer to our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Traffic Laws:  Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. There is relatively little police enforcement of traffic regulations. Travelers are required to obtain a visitor's driver’s license, which may be obtained from the Traffic Department or the Fire Station for a small fee on presentation of a valid home or international license.

Public Transportation:  Public transportation consists of mini-buses and taxis. Established, reasonable fares are available from airport dispatchers and local hotels.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) assesses whether local civil aviation authorities are in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Information may be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .

Raffles at The OWO review: a quintessentially British stay

This heritage building has been given a twist as a luxury hotel in the nation's capital

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Exterior of the Old War Office

If you've walked from Big Ben to Trafalgar Square, or meandered from St James's Park to the Thames, the chances are you've seen – and admired – the Old War Office. The turreted, dove-grey building is one of the jewels of Whitehall, completed in 1906 to house Britain's imperial military machine.

For much of the 20th century, its offices were inhabited by Britain's leading politicians, from Lord Kitchener to David Lloyd George, along with their armies of staffers, cooks and typists.

For a time it was the workplace of T.E. Lawrence, later Lawrence of Arabia. In 1914, he lamented to a friend that the grand marble staircase at the heart of the building was allowed to be used by "field marshals and charwomen" alone.

A century later, in 2016, the Ministry of Defence sold the building for a reported £350 million; and last year, after extensive but historically sensitive renovations, it opened as a five-star hotel, The OWO.

From the street, The OWO looks much as it has since it was constructed but, inside, a transformation has taken place. Two new floors have been built, as have three new basement levels to make room for a ballroom, a swimming pool, an underground car park and more. Thousands of square metres have been added to the building's already considerable acreage, taking its total footprint to some 76,000 square metres.

The result is easily the most major hotel to have opened in the capital in a generation.

Why stay here?

London isn't short of ultra-high-end hotels, but The OWO distinguishes itself from its peers in several ways. Its location couldn't be better: situated opposite Horse Guards Parade, it is ideally placed for visitors wishing to walk around the capital, or needing a central place to stay while doing business.

The hotel also has a tangible sense of place. You couldn't wake up in one of its rooms thinking you were in any major world city: it feels deeply English. The interiors, which were overseen by the feted designer Thierry Despont, skilfully marry old and new, allowing visitors to appreciate the old-world aesthetics of wood panelling and other original features, while enjoying high-tech loos, vast, comfortable beds and generously sized marble bathrooms.

The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, as willing to suggest childcare options as they are to come up with last-minute wardrobe help (during my stay, my dress's zip broke; within five minutes, room service had sent up a bag of safety pins). There are also a serious number of them: the ratio of staff to guest room is an astonishing 3:1.

Rooms and suites

room at Raffles at The OWO

There are 125 rooms and suites to choose from, none of which are the same, and none of which come cheap. Prices start at about £1,100 per room plus service and tax (and may not include breakfast, so look out for that).

Many of the grandest suites are named after the great figures that worked in them: the Haldane, for instance, was occupied by successive Secretaries of State for War; while the Churchill Suite was originally the army council room, where critical decisions were made during the Second World War. There are also 85 residences – privately owned apartments with access to the hotel amenities.

Eating and drinking

Mauro's Table at The OWO

The OWO has nine restaurants and bars, including a rooftop restaurant with views over St James's Park. If you don't want to order room service for breakfast, it can be taken in a light-filled atrium where the buffet options are superb (the almond croissants are particularly good) and the menu options even better.

Acclaimed chef Mauro Colagreco is in charge of three of the nine restaurants, which include Mauro's Table, a private dining room with views over Whitehall. A pre-dinner drink at the Spy Bar, the hotel's "speakeasy", is a must, and gratifyingly hard to find.

Other things to see and do

The spa at Raffles at The OWO

The spa is a big draw. Situated far beneath the ground floor, extending over four floors and designed by Goddard Littlefair, it features the usual steam rooms and saunas, and a large pool in a hall that is surprisingly tall for a room so deep underground.

For those fussy about lighting, the spa – and in fact the rest of the hotel – knocks it out of the park: the lighting is warm and not abrasive; subtly different according to each space's requirements, but always exactly right.

Look out for the hotel's remarkable collection of art, too: there's a six-metre high sculpture by Saad Qureshi and an oil painting, "Naval Officers of World War I", by Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope, on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, among other works.

The verdict

What the impressive statistics of The OWO don't capture is the hotel's style and grown-up charm.

Notable too are the warmth of its staff, and the intelligence with which this most storied of buildings has been coaxed into the 21st century, making this a truly unforgettable stay.

Leaf Arbuthnot was a guest at Raffles London at The OWO, Old War Office Building, 57 Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX; raffles.com/london
