The simple pleasures – swimming in balmy seas at dusk, talking and drinking under the stars, eating fresh, uncomplicated food – are just as appealing. Also, the genuine welcome you receive at the simplest taverna is enough to get you booking next year’s break as soon as you get home.

If you’re travelling around Greece as part of a bigger trip, Athens is a necessary stop. Home to a third of the population and the magnificent Acropolis, the Greek capital is a true metropolis.

Further north, Thessaloniki gives the capital a run for its money, with sophisticated restaurants, a buzzing nightlife and its own culture scene.

Don’t think the Greek islands hold the country’s only beautiful beaches: the long, sandy stretches of the Peloponnese are well worth a visit and easily accessible from the mainland.

Take the tourist road less travelled with a trip around the Central Mainland or Northern Mainland , with brilliant mountain hiking and trekking opportunities as well as tonnes of history and the all-important spectacular beaches.

The islands are really the jewel in Greece’s crown, though and a must when you visit Greece. Depending on how much time you have, it’s best to pick one group of islands to explore (or to sit back and relax on). The Argo-Saronic Islands , just a stone’s throw from Athens, are the perfect destination for multi-stop holiday.

Over on the west coast, you’ll find some of Greece’s most famous spots in the lush green Ionian islands , including Corfu and Kefalonia .

For easy island hopping, you can’t beat the beauty of the Cyclades . The size and close proximity of Santorini, Mykonos and co are ideal for a short stay on each.

Further north, the Sporades are easily navigable, with Skiathos an easy starting point thanks to its international airport. For a more authentic Greek atmosphere, the islands of the East and North Aegan are worth visiting.

As hoards of holiday makers can attest, Greek summers are hot, hot, hot. Travel to Greece in the mid-July to August peak season and you’ll find temperatures soaring into the mid 30s, along with crowds of tourists and domestic Greek holiday makers.

For the best weather without the crowds it attracts, June and September are lovely times to visit. May and October are worth a trip for the lower prices and Crete and the Cyclades are arguably at their best in May. Generally, though, you’ll find the weather less predictable and you might encounter some storms in October, particularly in the west or in the mountains.

From December to March during winter, you’ll find many amenities shut down, especially in resorts and on the islands. In the cities, of course, that isn’t an issue, while Rhodes and south eastern Crete are the warmest spots for some winter sun.

Flying is the easiest way to get to Greece, with the country boasting no fewer than 15 international airports.

The most cost effective route is usually via the UK or other northern European hub such as Amsterdam or Frankfurt. If you’re starting in the US, there are direct flights to Athens from New York and Philadelphia.

If you’re travelling to one of the islands, taking a flight to Athens and catching the bus or ferry can be a cheaper route than flying direct. During winter it may be your only option, as direct flights to some islands only operate during the summer months.

For a more sustainable option, it’s possible to take the train to Greece from the UK. The journey takes around 2 days from London to Athens, or you could combine it with a bigger trip as part of an InterRail or Eurail pass.

Buses are plentiful all over Greece, and they’ll get you around all the primary routes on the mainland, with a more basic operation on the islands. To explore a bit further, you’ll need to hire a scooter, motorbike or car.

Driving in Greece can be a joy, thanks to spectacular mountain scenery and picturesque coastal roads – just remember to drive on the right. The train system, meanwhile, is limited and is often a slower option than taking the bus.

Island hopping means boat trips, though it’s sometimes worth forking out for internal flights to get you from Athens to a starting point on the group of islands you want to explore. Athens to Rhodes is just a two-hour flight, for example, but 28 hours by boat.

The Ancient Greeks considered Delphi to be the centre of the earth — and upon visiting, it’s not hard to see why. Located in an unbeatable natural setting at the foot of Mount Parnassos in the Central Mainland, this ancient site has retained its mystique through the centuries. It’s even more stunning in spring, when wild flowers bloom all over the valley.

Watching the sunset across Santorini’s famous caldera is up there on most lists of things to do before you die. Most tourists make for Oia, but the sunset views from Akrotiri on the island’s southwestern tip are better and far less crowded.

You can’t visit Zakynthos without paying a visit to the beach that’s become the poster child for the whole of Greece. Navagio, better known as Shipwreck Bay, has a spectacular cliff drop, white sands, turquoise waters and – you guessed it – its very own shipwreck. Beaches don’t get much prettier than this.

If you’ve got basic hiking skills, put them to good use when you visit Greece with a trek up Mount Olympus , mythical abode of the Gods, in the Northern Mainland. To make the most of the mountain, allow two to three days hiking. The small town of Lithoro on the east of the mountain is by far the best place to base yourself.

Billed as the Greek Tuscany, the Pelion Peninsula in the Central Mainland has it all: lush countryside, excellent beaches, cute villages and good trekking. You’ll find the best walking seasons are late April to early June and early September to October.

The magnificent Acropolis looms over Athens, dominating almost every view. Of course, you must get your Classical Greek fix with visits to the Parthenon and Athens Archeological Museum. You’ll find accommodation in Greece to fit whatever budget you’re on, though prices will vary depending on the time of year you travel. High season in July and August and during Easter are the busiest times, when you’ll definitely need to pre-book a place to stay.

Sampling the local cuisine is a highlight of any trip, but in Greece especially so. Greek food is wide-ranging and delicious and restaurants ( tavernas ) are straightforward and good value.

Can’t decide where to dine? Go where the Greeks go. Mezedhes like tzatzíki and souvláki and chops are always reliable choices, while seafood can be one of the highlights of a trip to Greece. A proper Greek gyros pitta, stuffed with lamb, tomatoes, onion, salad and a few fries, may just be the greatest fast food ever invented.

Ouzo is synonymous with Greece, but Greek tipples go beyond the anise-flavoured aperitif. Many of the islands, including Santorini and Rhodes, are wine producers, so you’ll have a chance to sample local bottlings (and tour a vineyard or two if you like). Watersports

The Greek seashore offers endless scope for watersports, from waterskiing and parasailing to yachting and windsurfing. Waterski boats spend most of their time towing people around on inflatables, though you usually can waterski or wakeboard as well, while parasailing is also on offer at all the big resorts. Jet skis can be rented in many places, too.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is hugely popular around Greece. The country’s bays and coves are ideal for beginners, with a few spectacularly windy spots for experts. Renting a board isn’t too pricey, while instructors are usually available.

Some of the best windsurfing spots including Vassiliki in Lefkada, Santa Maria in Paros, Prassonissi in Rhodes, Kokkari in Samos, Kouremenos in eastern Crete and Karathonas in the Peloponnese.

A combination of steady winds, beautiful seascapes and many natural harbours make Greece a tremendous place for sailing. All sorts of bareboat and flotilla yacht trips are on offer, while dinghies, small cats and motor boats can be rented at many resorts.

For yachting, spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons. Winds can make for nauseous sailing in July and August, when you’ll also find far higher prices and crowded moorings.

Scuba diving

You’ll find some dive centres across the mainland, Dodecanese, Ionians, Cyclades and Crete. Generally, though, diving is pretty restricted because of the potential for stealing submerged antiquities. There’s not a huge amount of aquatic life, but you do get wonderfully clear water, while the rocky coast offers plenty of caves and hidden nooks to explore.

If you have the time and stamina, walking is probably the single best way to see the remote Greek backcountry, with plenty of options from gentle strolls to long-distance mountain paths through one of Europe’s most impressive mountain terrains. Spring and autumn, when its cooler, are great for walking.

Cycling is less popular with Greeks, but in an increasing number of resorts you can hire mountain bikes, and many of the rental places lead organized rides. They vary from easy jaunts around the countryside to serious rides up proper mountains. Summer heat can be fierce, but spring and autumn offer great riding conditions.

Non-EU nationals arriving by plane or boat from another EU state not party to the Schengen Agreement might not routinely have their passport stamped at minor Greek ports, so make sure this is done in order to avoid unpleasantness on exit. Your passport must be valid for three months after your arrival date.

Visitors from non-EU countries are currently not, in practice, being given extensions to tourist visas. You must leave not just Greece but the entire Schengen Group and stay out until the maximum 90-days-in-180 rule is satisfied.

If you overstay your time and then leave under your own power – ie are not deported – you'll be hit with a huge fine upon departure, and possibly be banned from re-entering for a period of time; no excuses will be entertained except (just maybe) a doctor's certificate stating you were immobilized in hospital. It cannot be overemphasized just how exigent Greek immigration officials have become on this issue.

If you read any Europe travel guide , you’ll quickly learn that the Greek Islands are a bucket list destination for many travelers, and for good reason. Featuring gorgeous beaches, clear blue waters, iconic sights, and some of the best seafood in the world, the islands off the coast of the Greek peninsula are the perfect place to relax and explore.

The more popular destinations like Santorini and Mykonos attract large crowds during peak season (from April to October), so consider visiting during the shoulder season if you’re looking for a quieter experience.

The Saronic Islands just off the coast of Athens are also a great option if you’re staying on the mainland and they aren’t quite as tourist-heavy.

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, is also absolutely worth a visit. With rugged mountains, modern cities, and ancient ruins, this island has something for every kind of traveler.

No trip to Greece is complete without a visit to Athens, the nation’s capital and home to over 3,000 years of history.

While Athens is very much a modern city, it is probably best known for its famous archaeological sites, including the Acropolis and Parthenon. History buffs can also get their fix at Athens’s many museums, including the National Archeological Museum, the New Acropolis Museum, and the Benaki Museum.

Modern Athens is also very much worth exploring. Do some shopping in the picturesque Plaka neighborhood, wander the Varvakeios Central Market, or get some great views from above at one of the city’s many rooftop bars.

For a taste of Byzantine Greece, head to Thessaloniki, a coastal city with lots to explore. Here you’ll find some of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in the country, including the White Tower and the Hagia Sophia (not to be confused with its namesake in Turkey).

Thessaloniki is also perfect for those looking to party on the mainland. The city is full of nightclubs, bars, and lounges where you can dance the night away.

Q: What do I need to know before traveling to Greece?

While Greece is one of the top travel destinations in the world, it has some catching up to do when it comes to accessibility. Most destinations in the country only have a limited amount of accessible accommodations and transportation options, so disabled travelers will want to book further in advance if possible. When it comes to the islands, those with a lower elevation tend to have more accessible facilities.

Along those lines, be aware that smoking is very prevalent in Greece. Most spaces enforce the recent ban on smoking indoors, but you’ll find plenty of people smoking outside. Be prepared, particularly if you’re coming from a place where smoking is less common.

Smaller shops and restaurants in Greece may have different hours than major retailers, which tend to stay open for a full 12-hour day. Some may take a break for a few hours in the afternoon while others may close early on certain days. Make sure you look up a business’s operating hours before heading out, especially if you’re visiting in the afternoon.

You will see plenty of signs reminding you of this throughout your trip, but do not flush your toilet paper in Greece. The country’s sewage pipes are very narrow and can clog with even the slightest bit of paper. Simply throw your TP and any feminine hygiene products out in the trash after use.

Island hopping is a great way to see Greece and explore all its islands have to offer. The two main ways to get around the islands are by air and by sea.

Twenty-five of the islands have their own airports and you can fly to almost all of them from Athens. Several islands, including Corfu and Santorini, have international airports that allow travelers to fly in from destinations outside of Greece like London. This is a great option if you’re coming to Greece from another European destination and want to minimize the number of flights on your itinerary.

Moreover, almost all of the islands are accessible by ferry. Ferries are generally easier to book than flights, as they don’t fill up quite as fast, but booking early is always a safe bet. You can search for ferries on sites like greekferries.gr or book with a travel agent who specializes in Greek island travel.

If you’re planning to rent a car to get around the islands, you can book a car ferry to bring the vehicle with you, but keep in mind that car ferries aren’t offered on every island.

Q: How much money do you need per day in Greece?

The amount of money you spend in Greece depends on when, where, and how you plan on traveling. You will generally spend more if you’re traveling to the Greek islands or during the peak season (late spring to early fall) on the mainland.

The average traveler spends about $130 USD per day on meals, accommodations, transportation, activities, and more.

however, it’s totally possible to travel Greece on a budget. Backpackers and budget travelers should expect to spend about $50 USD per day on their trip.

In general, Greece is quite safe for travelers. Violent crime rates are low but petty theft and pickpocketing do occur. Always be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables close and out of sight using pickpocket-proof clothing , and never leave your bag unattended.

Greece is also quite safe for solo female travel . Catcalling does happen, particularly in cities, but most destinations are fairly safe. 1. thessaloniki.

Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city and the financial center of the north of Greece. It is built around the Thermaikos Gulf, a modern vibrant city ideal if you love historical monuments and …food-tasting.

Thessaloniki was built in 316 BCE and it was a Byzantine and Ottoman center which is evident in the numerous monuments in the city. It is also one of the most popular and favorite culinary centers in Greece, renowned for its food and wine. Thessaloniki is a great base for visiting Chalkidiki, Meteora, and Olympus Mt.

2. Chalkidiki

Chalkidiki is an area with three beautiful peninsulas – Kassandra (great for nightlife), Sithonia (stunning beaches), and the seaside town of Ouranoupoli and the famous monastic state of Mount Athos. It is the favorite vacation destination not only of the whole of northern Greece but also of the other countries of the Balkans.

Chalkidiki is a stunning area to visit for beaches and history and one of the best places to visit in Greece. The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle who founded the Lyceum in Athens comes from Ancient Stagira in Chalkidiki. As Chalkidiki is quite an extensive area, you will need at least a week to explore and a private car.

Entrance Tip: Women are not allowed in the Athos Mt and Monasteries.

3. Prespes Lakes

248 km west of Thessaloniki, in the mountainous northwestern Macedonia part of Greece, you will find the National Park of the two Prespes lakes . The Prespes lakes are shared by three countries: Greece, North Macedonia, and Albania.

Prespes Lakes is a virgin natural paradise, a beautiful wetland, and one of the best places to visit in Greece for nature, and bird watching (260 species of birds and 23 species of fish). Moreover, the coast of the lakes is dotted with gorgeous small settlements and historical monuments of archaeological interest.

Travel Tip : When I visited Prespes we also went to Pisoderi Ski Resort, Florina town, and Nymfaio village where the brown bear shelter is.

4. Mount Olympus National Park

The National Park of Mount Olympus is probably the most famous Mt in Greece and according to Greek mythology, it was the home of the gods. Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and the second highest in the Balkans. The highest peaks of the mountain are Mytikas (2.918 m.), Stefani (2.909 m.), Skolio (2.911 m.), and Skala (2.866 m.).

The National Park of Mount Olympus is not only an international hiking destination that is considered quite demanding in certain areas. It also contains a large diversity of flora and fauna, some of them unique. As it is a highly protected area (no camping or fishing), you can reach its shelters only on foot. If you are planning to reach Mytikas, then I strongly advise you to do so between May and October. Olympos is one of the best places to visit in Greece!

The best place to stay for Mount Olympus is the nearby Litochoro village at Mythic Valley Hotel .

Best Places to Visit in Greece (Central)

5. zagori, epirus.

Zagorochoria or Zagori may sound like it is one place but actually, it is a cluster of 46 lovely villages! It is located in the northwestern region of Greece amidst the mountains of Pindus in Epirus. In the summer of 2023, the area was listed in the UNESCO monuments list.

Zagorochoria is one of the favorite winter destinations among Greeks and gets busy in December, especially during Christmas. Some of the best things to do in Zagori are:

• Walk the cobblestone villages full of traditional stone mansions. The most popular villages are Monodendri , Mikro, and Megalo Papigko.
• Hiking at Aoos National Park.
• Hiking Vikos Gorge (if weather permits it).
• Hike at the Dragonlake of Tymfi.
• Try the local cuisine and the famous milk, cheese, pumpkin, or sweet pies.

6. Parga, Epirus

Parga town is one of the best places to visit in Greece for couples. It is a beautiful, popular seaside tourist destination in western Greece. It has some lovely beaches like Sarakiniko and during summer, it is connected daily by ferry with Paxos, and Antipaxos , Corfu , and Lefkada.

Fifteen km from Parga lies the most important ancient monument of the region, the Necromancy of Acheron . Here the Ancient Greeks believed that the river Acheron was the Gates of the Underworld.

7. Meteora, Thessaly

Meteora is one of the top destinations in Greece for nature and culture!

The rocks are an extensive complex of gigantic sandstone rocks shadowing the local town of Kalambaka, 347 km north of Athens. There were initially 24 Monasteries founded by Greek Orthodox monks in the 14th and 15th century but today only 6 of them are working.

The Meteora Monasteries have been a UNESCO World Heritage Monument since 1988 and it is today the second most important monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos Monasteries in Chalkidiki.

8. Pelion, Thessaly

Pelion (or Pilio) is my favorite place in Greece. It is a large mountain (peninsula) between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea located halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki and my favorite place in Greece. It is full of chestnut forests, deep gorges with streams, and stunning beaches with authentic mountainous villages making Pelion one of the best all-year-round destinations in Greece.

Because of the dense forests and variety of terrain, Pelion is a paradise for outdoor activities. Its most popular part is the east Pelion facing the Aegean Sea. One of the villages Damouchari was one of the Mamma Mia Film Locations.

9. Delphi, Phocis

Delphi is a spectacular, UNESCO-listed archaeological site where the mystical Oracle of Delphi was founded at a strategic point. The function of the site as a cult center of Apollo is archaeologically attested since 860 B.C. Delphi was built on the remains of a Mycenaean settlement. We know that the archaic temple of Apollo was constructed in 510 BCE along with the rest of the monuments.

The Delphi Archaeological Museum houses some awe-inspiring ancient masterpieces. The modern 10-km far picturesque Arachova village offers complete touristic facilities and on top of Parnassos Mt, you can ski in the biggest ski resort in Greece.

Do not miss visiting the nearby UNESCO monument of Osios Loukas Monastery , a Byzantine masterpiece of the 11th century AD. Some call it, the most beautiful church in Greece.

One of the best places to visit in Greece, specifically in Athens is Plaka and the Anafiotika. It is called that because they were built by sailors from Anafi island. In Athens, you can also visit two of the most significant museums in the world: the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

11. Athens Riviera, Cape Sounion, and Temple of Poseidon

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon is one of the most popular half-day tours from Athens, located at the northernmost point of Athens. You can get there taking the scenic road of Athens Riviera , 65 km by the beautiful Attika seaside.

There you will reach the Sanctuary of Poseidon and its Temple, built between 444 and 440 BCE. The temple of Poseidon was part of the sacred triangle, along with the temple of Aphaia in Aegina and the Parthenon in Athens.

Argolis region is situated in the eastern part of the Peloponnese and contains some very popular and amazing sites:

14. Monemvasia, Laconia

Monemvasia is a large Byzantine fortress on a rock that broke away after a great earthquake in 375 CE. Today it is connected to the mainland by a road of about 400 meters.

Monemvasia has medieval houses with arches on cobblestone alleys in front of the Aegean Sea, synthesizing a magical atmosphere.

15. Mystras, Sparta

6 km away from Sparta, the ancient kingdom of Leonidas, lie the Byzantine Castle ruins of Mystras a UNESCO-listed monument. Built in the 13th century AD by the Frankish, Mystras became the capital of the Despotate of Morea and an important center for the next 2 centuries.

The layout of the castle city is in three distinct zones, with a significant difference in altitude: Upper, Lower, and Outer Chora. In addition, there is the Acropolis at the top. Today Mystras is by far the most important Byzantine monument in Greece.

16. Kardamili, Western Mani

Kardamili is a beautiful, low-key seaside village with tavernas in picturesque little coves. As you stroll the village you pass by stone-built traditional houses, towers and turrets, cobbled streets and flowered courtyards.

Kardamili, set at the foothills of the Taygettus range is a fantastic destination in Greece, ideal to explore the stark and powerfully wild terrain of the area. Travel south to some spectacular villages such as Limeni, Areopoli, Gerolimenas, Caves of Diros, and Vathia to Porto Kagio.

17. Voidokilia Beach

Voidokilia beach, set on the southwestern Peloponnese on the Ionian Sea is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Shaped like the Greek letter Omega (Ω) and surrounded by gold, soft sand, and a Natura-2000 lagoon, this is one of the best destinations in Greece.

Voidokilia Beach is near Gialova town, a popular seaside town, the Mycenean Archaeological site of Nestor’s Palace , beautiful Pylos and Methoni villages.

18. Ancient Olympia

Ancient Olympia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, another UNESCO-listed site. The ancient stadium marks the site where the ancient Olympic Games and the Heraia were held. The stadium took its final form in the early 5th century BCE when the great Sanctuary of Zeus was built.

In the in-house Museum, you will get the chance to see some masterpieces of the Greek ancient world, such as the Hermes of Praxiteles.

Best Islands to Visit in Greece

Greece has about 6,000 islands and islets with about 100 of them inhabited with permanent populations ranging from 680.000 (Crete) and 152.000 (Rhodes) to 2 (Agios Minas Fournoi). That makes it hard to decide which island to go to if you are planning to travel to Greece for the first time.

So let’s jump to the best islands in Greece that I believe are amazing and you should visit:

19. Santorini, Cyclades

• Santorini is a top destination in Greece famous for its stunning caldera views, mesmerizing sunsets, and a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.
• July and August are the busiest, hottest, windiest, and most expensive months on Santorini island. If possible, avoid those months.
• There are dozens of things to do in Santorini but 3-4 days is enough to see the best of the island.
• The best hotel in Santorini is Canaves Oia Suites & Spa .

20. Naxos, Cyclades

• Naxos is ideal for family vacations. It is also large enough to never get bored with so many choices: traditional villages, ancient sites (Portara in the main town), stunning sandy beaches, hiking trails, and glorious food.

21. Tinos, Cyclades

Tinos is a classic Cycladic whitewashed island with some of the most beautiful villages in Greece. It is an important pilgrimage center of Orthodox Greeks and it has 750 chapels and churches, 600 dovecotes, and 34 settlements, both Catholic and Orthodox. It has also the sanctuary of Poseidon, where pilgrims were purified before passing to the important island of Delos in Mykonos .

22. Chios, Northern Aegean Island

• Chios island is the home of medieval villages producing the famous mastic, of UNESCO Monastery of Nea Moni of Chios, the Castle City hanging over the cliff, and the spectacular nature and beaches from Kardamyla to Diefha.
• From Chios, you can hop to Lesvos island which is 3 hours away by ferry.

23. Patmos Island, Dodecanese

Patmos is a small but remarkable island, also known as the Jerusalem of the Aegean. You can visit the dark Cave where Apostle John wrote the Apocalypse and the UNESCO Mοnastery of John the Evangelist. Stroll the medieval villages of Gothic and neoclassic architecture and swim in the impressive Twin or Ligginou beaches.

24. Astypalaia island, Dodecanese

Astypalaia is one of the most authentic islands to visit in Greece. Shaped like a butterfly, it will charm you immediately with its whitewashed villages, its picturesque main town laden with bougainvilleas, its Venetian Castle and the old windmills, the turquoise waters, and the peaceful fishing villages. Best place to stay: Ihthioessa Boutique Hotel .

25. Hydra Island, Argo Saronic

Hydra is a cosmopolitan and classy island and a very popular yachting destination. A completely car-free island, it will stun you with its impressive architecture, the stone mansions, and the bougainvillea alleys. Hydra is one of the most romantic destinations in Greece.

26. Skopelos island, Sporades

Skopelos is one of the greenest islands as most of it is covered by pine forests. It was the main location of the Mamma Mia film in Greece. If you love wonderful sandy beaches with turquoise clear waters and the green of the pine trees surrounding them, this is your island! Skopelos is also famous for its rich gastronomy.

27. Lefkada Island, Ionian

Lefkada is a stunning island famous for its breathtaking beaches like Katsiki Beach (photo on the left) or the Egremni, a long, unyielding wall of cliffs, with bright translucent turquoise waters. It is connected to the mainland with a metallic floating bridge that you can cross by car. Best place to stay: Horizon View Apartment .

Best Places to Visit in Crete

Wherever you go on Crete Island will be stunningly beautiful, and you will have one of the best travel experiences in your life. Crete is the largest island in Greece and even if you spend a month on the island, you would have scratched just the surface.

If I had to choose only three locations in Crete then I would choose spectacular nature such as the Balos beach, the Samaria gorge, and the archaeological site of Knossos Palace.

28. Balos Chania Crete

Balos Beach and Lagoon is located in the Chania region, in the northwest of Crete, and is one of the most impressive beaches in the world. It has white soft sand, but in some places, the sand has a special pink color, due to the crushed shells! Balos is an exotic and spectacular place with turquoise waters and a large variety of rare flora and fauna.

29. Samaria Gorge, Chania

If you love hiking then Samaria Gorge is one of the top destinations to go to in Greece! The 15,9 km Samaria Gorge is a real gem of hiking. It makes a challenging downhill hike of 5-7 hours and at the end is the scenic seaside village of Agia Roumeli . It is open to hiking between May and November.

If you are traveling with a group of up to 8 people you can stay at the beautiful stone Villa Samaria in Omalos.

30. Knossos Palace, Heraklion

The Palace of King Minos in Knossos in the Heraklion region is the largest of the preserved Minoan (2000-1350 BCE) palatial centers. Minoan four wings are arranged around a central courtyard, containing the royal quarters, workshops, shrines, storerooms, repositories, the throne room, and banquet halls. It is also connected with thrilling legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur, and the story of Daidalos and Icaros.

The vast majority of Greeks live in Mainland Greece. Approximately 1.2 million people live in the Peloponnese and 1.3 million on the Greek islands. How many islands are in Greece? Greece has between 1,200 and 6,000 islands depending on the measure used to establish an island vs an islet. The number of inhabited islands is variously cited as between 166 and 227. The ten largest Greek islands by land area are Crete, Euboea, Lesbos, Rhodes, Chios, Kefalonia, Corfu, Lemnos, Samos, and Naxos. Naxos is one of my very favorite islands in Greece. Relaxed vibe, wonderful local food, and great beaches . How to get to Greece? Most people will fly from a hub in western Europe (usually London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Rome, or Venice) to Athens , Crete , Santorini , Mykonos , Kos, Rhodes, or Corfu. If you’re arriving from the east you could fly via Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Dubai, Mumbai, Delhi, or Singapore. My top tip for choosing flights is to fly into and out of different airports so you don’t waste time and money backtracking to your arrival point. For example, fly from London to Athens, then ferry to Mykonos, ferry to Paros, ferry to Santorini, then fly Santorini to London (and don’t go back to Athens for your return flight). You may pay slightly more for 2 one-way tickets than a round-trip ticket, but it will be more than made up for by the savings for the extra ferry and hotel night. How long is the flight to Greece? Flying times to Athens, Greece. For direct flights to the Greek islands (when available) flight times can be up to 30 minutes longer or shorter. • Rome to Athens: 1 hour, 50 minutes • Barcelona to Athens: 2 hours, 50 minutes • Paris to Athens: 3 hours, 10 minutes • Amsterdam to Athens: 3 hours, 15 minutes • London to Athens: 3 hours, 40 minutes • Boston to Athens: 9 hours, 15 minutes • New York to Athens: 9 hours, 30 minutes • Toronto to Athens: 9 hours, 30 minutes • Chicago to Athens: 10 hours, 10 minutes • Atlanta to Athens: 10 hours, 50 minutes • Istanbul to Athens: 1 hour, 25 minutes • Dubai to Athens: 5 hours, 10 minutes • Delhi to Athens: 10 hours, 15 minutes • Singapore to Athens: 11 hours, 30 minutes

For sightseeing, tours, hiking, and exploring the best months to go to Greece are late March to early June, and late September to and early November. Travel to the Greek Islands is not recommended between November and March; the weather will be gray, windy, and often rainy, and many most hotels and restaurants will be shuttered for the season. Athens is a good year-round destination; the weather is best in the spring and fall, but archaeological sites and museums are open throughout the winter, and there is the benefit of lower rates and thinner crowds in the off-season. The Acropolis Museum in Athens . Though travel to the Greek Islands is best in the spring and summer, Athens can be a great destination at any time of year. What are the Best Greek Islands? All the Greek islands are wonderful. Really! I have never met someone that went to an island and said, “what a mistake, big disappointment.” It just doesn’t happen. They’re all different but all very special. Perhaps a better question is what are the best Greek islands for a first time visitor to Greece? For that I would answer Santorini , Naxos , Paros , and Mykonos . Crete is also great for first-timers but it’s so big that it’s good to do on its own or perhaps along with Santorini – not much more or you’ll spread your time too thin.

Santorini is famous for its fantastic luxury hotels and caldera views. How do you get between the Greek Islands? Greek ferries are the primary mode of transport between the islands – especially for the islands in the Aegean (e.g. Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes). There are also some flights between the islands and (more commonly) flights via Athens between different islands but these are expensive and have inconsistent schedules. For most itineraries, using the ferry is best. Ferryhopper.com is the best website to search for and purchase tickets for all Greek ferry routes.

What are the best places to visit in Mainland Greece? I love the Greek Islands, but there are so many great places to visit in mainland Greece that it’s worth making a trip to explore it all on its own. Just west of Athens is The Peloponnese, a vast peninsula peppered with romantic harbor towns, olive groves, and archaeological ruins. North of Athens are the ancient ruins of Delphi and the incredible clifftop monasteries at Meteora. In Greece’s far north is the three-legged peninsula of Halkidiki , famous for its excellent beaches and mountain monastic republic .

The romantic harbor town of Nafplio is located in the Peloponnese peninsula, about two hours by car or bus west of Athens. What are the Best Beaches in Greece? My favorite islands for beaches are Naxos , Mykonos , Paros , Ios, Rhodes, and Crete. But there are many more with wonderful beaches and every island has great swimming even when the beaches don’t have the typical golden sand you’re expecting. Outside of the islands, the Halkidiki region of northern Greece also has excellent beaches running all up and down the coast of its three popular peninsulas.

With its pink sand and calm turquoise water, Elafonisi Beach in southwest Crete is my all-time favorite Greek beach.

What are the best places in Greece for kids? The whole of Greece is incredibly kid-friendly . And with great beaches, interesting history, a laid-back vibe, and incredible (and kid-friendly) food, the Greek islands are an especially excellent choice for a family vacation. Greek island hopping adds a bit of adventure to a family trip and an opportunity to see several very distinct destinations – plus, riding the ferry is always fun. My favorite island for families is Naxos , but there are many others that are also kid-friendly and great for families: Mykonos , Crete , Rhodes, and Corfu are four more islands that have great beaches, cool towns, and a friendly atmosphere. Paros is an idyllic mix of Naxos (slow pace, traditional, great beaches) and Mykonos (trendy, luxurious, lots of nightlife). What currency is used in Greece? Greece is part of the European Union, and the currency used is the Euro (€). Most major shops and restaurants across Greece accept credit cards, but there may be a minimum purchase required to use them. It is a good idea to have some cash on hand for bus trips and small purchases like bottled water and snacks. ATMs are plentiful in Athens and generally easy to find in most villages and beach towns across Greece. Do you tip in Greece? Tipping is not expected in Greek restaurants but is appreciated. Rather than a percentage of the bill, a restaurant tip in Greece can be a few Euros left on the table as a recognition of good service, or simply rounding up the tab to the nearest convenient amount. The more touristy (and expensive) a restaurant is, the more a tip is expected.

Our driver (Theo) managed our 48 seater coach extremely well. We are not critical of his driving at all. Greek Island Explorer (10 Days)

We had a very good time and had a wonderful tour agent to help us all the way. She went above the call of duty every day for us all. The only event that was beyond the control of Tour Radar is the hotel in Mykonos which considered a lower level room as a 50 Euro upgrade for seniors and persons with disabilities. They preferred to leave those rooms vacant than allow them at the same rate.

The Perfect Itinerary for 24 Hours in Athens

If you are planning to travel to the Greek Islands , there is a 99.9% chance you will have to fly through Athens in order to connect to your island of choice. Because of that, I have put together the perfect itinerary for 24 hours in Athens! With just 24 hours in Athens, I promise you’ll see the famous Acropolis, navigate the Plaka area, all while finding some hidden viewpoints, shopping, and authentic Greek eats. I told you it was the perfect itinerary!

Unfortunately, a lot of travellers are quick to say that Athens is dirty and a waste of time. But I totally disagree! There is so much history in Athens, that it’s a shame people skip it without giving it a real shot. In the two times, I’ve been to Athens, I’ve seen some really cool restaurants, bars and neighbourhoods.

Where to Stay: 24 Hours in Athens

During our most recent stay in Athens, we stayed in an Airbnb, as it was centrally located and very affordable. Since we were only there for two nights, and we knew most of our time would be spent out seeing the sites. Which is why we didn’t see the point of spending money on fancier accommodation. We used this VRBO , which was spacious and comfortable. Plus, we were blown away by it’s views of the Acropolis, and that our host woke up at 4 am to check us in.

* TIP: Most flights arrive in Athens in the middle of the night. This can make it tricky to check into an VRBO style apartment, which is why a hotel can be easier and stress-free . If you do want to stay in an VRBO, make sure it has a lockbox. Or just message the host before you book to ensure you can check-in at the time of your arrival.

How to Get Around Athens: Bus, Uber, Taxies, and the Metro

From the airport to the city it can be a fairly long trek. So if you fly in between 6:30 am-11:30 pm consider taking the metro line. This will definitely save you some money. Unfortunately, our international flight got in at 4 am. So we pre-booked a taxi transfer through Get Your Guide to get us safely to our Airbnb. I use GetYourGuide when I want to uncover new things to do or in this case for a safe transfer. They’re easy to use and book with, and I’ve explored the best of my destination with their tours.

As for our 24 hours in Athens we used the metro once, and then walked the rest of the day. Alternatively, if you want to cover all the major UNESCO sites of Athens, jump on the Athens Hop-on-Hop-Off Bus. On here you can discover the main attractions of Athens, the Port of Piraeus, and the breathtaking Athenian Riviera. You’ll even have the option to listen to interesting commentaries aboard the bus. But what I love about the Hop-on-Hop-Off Buses is that you can explore at your own pace. No rush, no strict schedules—just pure flexibility and the opportunity to soak up the beauty of Athens and its stunning coastline.

Lastly, we used Uber to get from our Airbnb to the docks to catch our fast ferry to the islands. Once again, this was extremely early in the morning, so public transportation wasn’t an option.

Is 24 Hours Enough Time in Athens?

While it may seem like a short window to explore a city steeped in millennia of history, 24 hours in Athens can indeed offer a captivating glimpse into its most iconic landmarks. By carefully using this itinerary, visitors can traverse the majestic Acropolis, marvel at the Parthenon, and wander through the bustling streets of Plaka and Monastiraki.

However, to truly immerse oneself in Athenian life, allowing 2-3 days would provide ample opportunity to delve deeper into hidden gems and neighborhoods. Beyond the renowned sites lie charming districts like Exarchia, with its vibrant street art scene. And Koukaki, known for its cozy cafes and authentic tavernas. Extending your stay allows for leisurely strolls through tranquil parks, leisurely meals at local eateries, and chance encounters with the city’s friendly residents. While 24 hours offers a taste of Athens’ splendor, a few extra days unveil its soul, making for an enriching and unforgettable experience.

FAQ About Travelling to Athens

Drinking water in athens.

Our Airbnb host told us it wasn’t safe to drink the water, so buy bottled water. Hopefully, this will change in the coming years. I hate buying bottled water, due to the plastic waste. This is why we always travel with our own re-usable self-cleaning UV water bottle .

Electrical Plugs

Greece requires European Plugs. So if you don’t already have a universal adaptor plug that works worldwide , I recommend bringing this on all your travels. We have this one and love it! Not only does it work with my computer and hair curler, it has the additional four USB plugs at the top, to charge all your phone and any other gadgets!

Euros. I recommend having cash on hand, however, most major restaurants, stores and hotels accept credit cards.

24 Hours in Athens Itinerary

9 am: breakfast in athens.

Rise and shine wanderers! We’ve got a big day ahead of us, so don’t let your jet lag get in the way.

First stop, Greek yogurt for breakfast – obviously! Fresko Yogurt Bar is my favourite Greek yogurt chain restaurants to grab a quick breakfast on the go. Here you can find different types of Greek yogurt, that they allow you to sample! Plus, they offer delicious toppings like honey, nuts, berries or granola. Conveniently, there is a location near the Acropolis. So you can either eat it there, or I recommend grabbing one to go. Then you can eat it while waiting in the ticket line at the Acropolis (and trust me, there will be a line).

9:15 -12pm: Acropolis & Theatre

Let’s be honest, the real claim to fame here in Athens is the Acropolis , and it’s certainly worth all the hype. Stepping on a site that has been around since the 5 th century and survived wars, weather, earthquakes, and bombs, deserves to be marvelled at.

Here are some tips to make your Acropolis experience a positive one:

• Get there early to avoid massive lines to buy your tickets at the gate (20€), and to avoid the heat of the blazing summer sun.
• Or be a real savvy traveller and purchase your entrance ticket before you leave to avoid the line altogether.
• Allow for at least 2 hours to wander around the site. We spent 3-hours, to make time for photos and learning about all the history.
• Do not hire a tour guide on site! When we arrived a lot of tour guides were shouting to hire them for a tour. Most were asking for 20€ per person, on top of the entrance fee, and I have heard mixed reviews from people who have used one.
• If you are keen to have a walking guide, which I recommend, consider the Get Your Guide audio tour on your phone that includes your entrance fee
• Or if you are ok spending a bit more, there are also small group tours .

If you are interested in visiting the Acropolis museum after seeing the monuments, then the best deal is to buy a bundle ticket . This includes your admission to both the Acropolis monuments, the Acropolis Museum, plus, it also includes a walking guide/tour around the site . Oh, and did I mentioned your guide is an experienced archaeologist!? They will share tales and facts that will bring the Acropolis’ history to life as you visit the monuments and the Museum.

12:30 pm: Lunch at Avocado

Avocado is a delicious vegetarian restaurant that has vegan and gluten-free options. Although Ben and I aren’t vegetarian, we always love vegetarian restaurants and eating clean! Plus we ate way too much meat in the Balkans and were craving a healthy meal. Ben got the Avocado burger and I grabbed one of their delicious salads and the vegan coconut milkshake. Everything was delicious! If we went back I would definitely want to try their avocado hummus and truffle houlumi salad.

Alternatively, join an Athens Food Tour for lunch

Calling my fellow foodies!  If you’re like me and always on the hunt for the best bites while on vacation, then you can’t miss out on an Athens street food tour with a local guide . This tour is the real deal when it comes to authentic Greek cuisine. You’ll get to chow down on the best street food in Athens! Plus, sip on refreshing drinks, explore the city, and even hang out where the locals do. By the end of the afternoon, you’ll be stuffed (in the best way possible). Plus, you get to choose between a private or group tour, so it’s totally up to you. Don’t miss out on this delicious adventure!

*Note: you can also do this tour for dinner , if that suits your itinerary better!

2-5pm: Choose Your Own Adventure

This is where you get to choose how you want to spend the rest of your day.

Culture and Insta-worthy Photos:

Walk through the tiny old neighbourhood of Anafiotika . Here you will find some of the oldest houses built in Athens, on the side of the Acropolis hill. All the narrow alleyways, colourful flowers, hung laundry and sleeping kittens make it a very photogenic area.

More History:

If you really want to cover all the wonders of Athens, then give your feet a break and jump on the Athens Hop-on-Hop-Off Bus. On here you can discover all the sites of Athens, the Port of Piraeus, and the breathtaking Athenian Riviera, while listen to the interesting commentaries aboard the bus. Explore these fantastic destinations at your own pace, by jumping on and off the bus whenever and wherever you fancy. No rush, no strict schedules—just pure flexibility and the opportunity to soak up the beauty of Athens and its stunning coastline.

I recommend stopping at the original Olympic Stadium , and the towering remains from the Temple of Zeus (shown in the photo below).

Forgot something at home? Here on the main strip, you will find all your mainstream stores including Zara, H&M, Mango, Forever21, Pull and Bear and American Eagle.

Shop in the Plaka :

Or for lower prices and fun local pieces, shop in the Plaka area. Even if you do not like shopping I do recommend checking this area out. Yes, it is touristy but it’s also full of life!

I picked up the most beautiful leather sandals at the stand,  Nikol , for only 19€, after a bit of bartering of course. They even offered to customize the straps to fit me better. They have tons of styles all throughout the Plaka area, but I fell in love with a simple style, and to this day they are still my go-to favourite sandal. Also, after 9 months of wearing them religiously, they are still in tack. Some souvenirs can fall apart after a week, but not these leather sandals. You’ll also find typical Greek souvenirs, sunglasses, clothes, and food in this area.

5-6pm: Sunset Drinks 

Enjoy a sunset sipper at A for Athens. Some other great rooftop patios include 360, or Athenia, City Zen, but in my opinion, A for Athens has the best view.

After spending the day marvelling at the amazing Acropolis, now it’s time to sit back and reflect on your day by looking at it from a different perspective. A for Athens has an amazing rooftop patio, however, we enjoyed the views from the main bar. Although not on the roof, this section is still open air. While sitting at the bar, we just turned our seats and had a front-row to the best view of the city. The picture below was taken from our seats at the bar. Not too shabby, hey?

*Tip: Depending on the season, sunset time will vary. If you are staying in Athens more than one night, consider reserving a table for dinner to ensure you get a good spot.

6-8 pm: Dinner 

Head to ‘Slovaki Row’ for some authentic eats. Take your pick from any of the restaurants in this area. They all have similar menus and prices, but we picked up a good vibe from O Thanasis and we were very pleased with our meal! Pita, Taziki, Greek salad and Slovaki, of course. Ben and I ordered a Slovaki each and quickly realized we ordered too much food. We could have easily shared one main. Also, we were very pleased to see that the prices here were quite low for European standards. For example, beer was 1.5€ and wine was €3.50 for 500ml. If you are really on a budget you can also grab take-away gyros or Slovakia for a bit less than if you get table service.

8-9pm: Dessert & Drinks

After dinner, head to Yiasemi for a traditional Greek coffee, dessert or a nightcap with a terrific vibe. This little restaurant is located in the Plaka area. And people usually sit out on the steps to take in the lively atmosphere of the area, and people watch! Try their traditional baklava or homemade pies with ice cream. If you have more time in the city, come back and enjoy a vegetarian breakfast buffet on their rooftop patio.

9-11pm: Nightlife

If jet lag hasn’t hit, walk 20 minutes to the  Kerameikos area  to enjoy an evening cocktail, live music, hookah or go dancing. There is an abundance of cool & hip restaurants, bars, pubs and lounges in this area. So there is bound to be something that will suit you. Personally, Ben and I love to end our vacation days with hookah and tea. So we found Hookaholic & My Lollipop (terrible name, I know), to be a good fit for us. There was another bar with hookahs on this strip, but they were charging €30 per hookah, which in my opinion is very overpriced.  With that being said, if you also like hookah, make sure to ask for the price before you order.

On my next trip to Athens, I would definitely go back to this area and check out their cool restaurants and cafes.

In Conclusion: 24 Hours in Athens

In sum, a whirlwind 24 hours in Athens unveils a kaleidoscope of Greek history, culture, and modern life. From tracing the footsteps of ancient philosophers atop the Acropolis to getting lost in the labyrinthine streets of Plaka and Monastiraki, each moment is a treasure trove of wonder. The Travel Guides explore Greece: What they thought of Athens, Mykonos and Milos

When the Travel Guides learnt they were heading to Greece for a holiday, they were understandably elated. With a rich history and stunning beaches there was a lot to look forward to. The Guides explored three key locations: capital city Athens, as well as the islands of Mykonos and Milos.

Here's what they experienced, and a few of the funnier moments they had along the way:

The biggest attraction in Athens is the Acropolis, which hosts the ruins for at least 14 ancient temples and theatres. One of these is the Parthenon, which was built as a shrine to Athena, the Greek goddess of war. The Guides had mixed views on the structure.

Twins Stack and Mel likened it to a "fort on top of a big hill".

"I just think it's so ugly," Victoria Fren said, noting all of the scaffolding and construction. "It just looked like someone was renovating the back of my house."

The Guides also visited Syntagma Square, where they witnessed the changing of the guards.

"They're pretty good-looking guys," Catherine Fren observed.

Meanwhile Stack and Mel felt they looked "ridiculous".

Another stop in Athens was the Panathenaic Stadium, which is almost 2,000 years old and built entirely of marble. It was also the world's first ever Olympic stadium. And while many of the Guides decided to have a quick run, it's safe to say none are going to be Olympic athletes any time soon.

According to the Guides, it's the "biggest party island" in Greece. And if the Guides' experiences are anything to go by, it's the perfect location to soak up the sun and hang out at the beach, before dancing the night away.

The Fren family enjoyed a speedboat ride, which turned into a "super disaster" for the family, who weren't expecting to end up like "drowned rats".

Next on the itinerary was Milos, a more relaxing island with small villages and volcanic beaches. The Guides stayed in boat sheds that had been refurbished into beautiful places for tourists to stay.

Here the Guides went cliff jumping. It was three metres, and Kev was freaking out. Thankfully with a little push — or hand holding — from Teng and Dorian, he managed to complete the jump.

Meanwhile many of the other families took on a seven-metre jump.

You might be thinking, what did the Guides rate their trip? Out of five, Stack and Mel gave the holiday four, while The Snobs Kevin and Janetta rated it three-and-a-half.

But the rest of the Guides all gave their holiday in Greece full marks with a five.

Founded in 508 BCE, Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and it's regularly touted as one of the Mediterranean’s best capital cities to visit. One thing’s for sure: whether you’re into architecture, mythology, ancient sites, modern art or simply relaxing by the beach, Athens has something for everyone.

When should I go to Athens?

Greece generally attracts most people during the summer months (June to August) and Athens is no different, but we recommend visiting in the spring and autumn to avoid the heat. These shoulder seasons – March to May and September to October – offer cooler temperatures and a more comfortable travel experience overall. It’s also worth remembering that Athens is a humid place thanks to its coastline, which creates humid heat in the summer and gives the winter cold an extra chill. Consider this when packing and bring layers for all seasons.

Greek Orthodox Easter usually falls in April or May and the run-up to it, plus the event itself, is a huge celebration in the Greek calendar – even more so than Christmas. Expect street carnivals to mark the end of Lent and street processions to the various neighborhood churches on the Easter weekend, culminating in Mass and a huge meal on the Easter Sunday with a lamb on the spit. 

Restaurant prices won’t change much throughout the year, but accommodation prices do vary.  The same four-star hotel located near the Acropolis could be €140 per night in March and jump up to €320 in June for a weekend date, with Easter time seeing similar price rises.  It’s often cheaper to book directly, and hotels generally only publish their prices about two to three months in advance. 

How much time should I spend in Athens?

Many Europeans come to Athens for a weekend break, and long-haul travelers often use the city as as a stopover on the way to the Greek islands. 

You can get an initial taste of the city in two days, but we recommend a longer stay to truly understand the essence of this ancient capital. With four days, you can spend a day and a half at the capital’s famous sights, spend an afternoon wandering its neighborhoods , and still have time time to explore the beaches and ancient ruins of the Athenian coastline for a day or two.

Is it easy to get in and around Athens?

Located at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, Greece (and Athens in particular) attracts many tourists, which means the travel infrastructure is well developed and easy to use. Athens International Airport is 33km (21 miles) and a 30- to 45-minute drive – or a 45-minute metro ride – from the city center. There are also good ferry connections to Greece from Italy, with coach or rail services to and from Athens. 

Island hoppers will set out from the port of Piraeus , which is 45km (28 miles) from the airport and 10km (6 miles) from the city center. Piraeus is well linked to both the center (20 minutes by metro) and airport (a 24-hour bus service that takes about 90 minutes).

Public transport around Athens itself is easy, accessible and affordable, with a single ticket valid for a 90-minute journey and costing a mere €1.20. There is also a range of ticket deals, including  tourist passes lasting three and five days. 

The four modes of transport in Athens are:

• the very clean metro system . Note: no food is allowed.
• the overground train that connects the center to Piraeus port and other mainland destinations.
• an extensive network of  buses and electric trolleys . These primarily run to urban neighborhoods beyond the touristic center. 
• a tram service that connects the city center to the Athens coast and its beaches in about an hour.

After you’ve gotten yourself from the airport to the city center, most of Athens’s popular sights sit within a compact, walkable area. Just be aware of the traffic – cars don’t always immediately stop at red lights, and motorbikes occasionally mount the sidewalk to park.

Top things to do in Athens

Naturally, many visitors head straight to the Acropolis and the  Parthenon , Athens' most notable sights. The Acropolis has a daily visitor’s cap to avoid overcrowding and to preserve the ancient monument, so be sure to book your tickets in advance. It’s not really necessary to have a guide for the Acropolis – which can be booked on site – unless you’re very interested in dates and knowing the intricacies of ancient Greek history.

At the foot of the Acropolis lies the impressive Acropolis Museum , which showcases treasures from the Archaic to Roman periods, plus a stunning glass floor that reveals the excavated ruins underneath it. There’s also a terraced restaurant on the top floor with gorgeous views across to the monument.

Ancient artifacts crop up all over the city in random places, too; the metro stations of Monastiraki, Akropoli and Syntagma are like mini museums in their own right, and there's even ruins of a Roman tomb in a glassed-off area of the Zara clothing store on the shopping street of Ermou.

If it’s shopping you’re into, pedestrianized Ermou St is the place to go. It runs for nearly a mile from the Acropolis area up to Parliament in Syntagma Square, and features tons of fashion brands such as Mac, Desigual and the aforementioned Zara, plus a huge H&M. Greece’s main department store, Attica, is also here, and it's a great place to stock up with your holiday essentials. 

Looking for free and low-cost things to do in Athens ? Meander along the streets of Monastiraki flea market on a Sunday to peruse all the random wares for sale (everything from old drachma coins to shop mannequins), or take a stroll through the National Garden  next to the Parliament building, with its many species of plants and parrots flying freely. Witness the changing of the evzones (presidential guards) on the hour outside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , or make your way to  Filopappou Hill /Hill of the Muses with its pine forest – a great destination on a hot day thanks to its abundant shade. Be sure to head up here at sunset for views across to the Saronic Gulf.

My favorite thing to do in Athens

As an aficionado of street art, I love exploring the burgeoning street art scene here and getting to know the various neighborhoods where it proliferates. Take in the famous Praying Hands Mural just off Omonia Sq, for example, which depicts Jesus praying for the people down on Earth – a play on Albrecht Dürer’s Praying Hands (1508).

I also love wandering around the hidden village of Anafiotika , which sits beneath the northeast side of the Acropolis. A sub-district of Plaka, it was built in the mid-1800s when King Otto brought in workers from the Greek island of Anafi to construct his palace. Homesick, the workers set about making their neighborhood a replica of their homeland, building white, sugar-cubed houses with flat stone roofs and brightly painted wooden doors and shutters, like those found in the Cyclades. Pink and white bougainvilleas wind their way up these buildings, several of which have roof gardens. 

Anafiotika is a bit difficult to find, but worth the effort. Start at the Acropolis main entrance, and walk to your left along the path; keep the monument to your right until you reach the Church of Metamorphosis. Continue straight past the church and follow the wider path up a steep hill. The path turns right and runs into stairs – this is the start of the island village.

How much money do I need for Athens?

Athens isn’t an expensive place to visit compared to other European destinations, especially outside of the high summer season when prices rise significantly.

• Basic room for two: €36–128, depending of style of hotel and location
• Self-catering apartment: €65 per day
• Public transport ticket: €1.20 for a 90-minute journey, €10 from the airport, €4.10 for a day pass, €20 for a three-day pass including one airport journey, €8.10 for a five-day pass (not including airport)
• Coffee: €2–2.50
• Typical Greek gyros with salad and fries: €2–3
• Dinner for two: €30 (add €2.50 for beer or wine)
• Beer at a pub: €2.50+

What do I need to know before going to Athens?

Bring layers, no matter the season 

As Athens is located on the coast, it’s sticky in the summer and quite chilly in the spring, fall and winter evenings. Layers are always a good idea: think T-shirts, light sweaters and a jacket for the cooler months. For the really hot summer months, bring a sports cooling towel to wrap around your neck to cool off as you explore.

Be aware of your belongings on the metro

As with any capital or big city, pickpockets can take advantage of large tourist crowds, especially on crowded public transport. Avoid hanging large cameras around your neck and keep your backpack in front of you. You may also want to invest in a hanging cord for your cell phone to loop across your body so it can’t be snatched from your hands.

No flushing toilet paper!

The plumbing in Athens is antiquated and the pipes tend to be very narrow. Flushing paper down the toilet will clog things up, so you’ll always find a bin with bag inside it in the bathroom for you to place toilet paper inside. This is removed daily by housekeeping.

Solar eclipse path across New York and how long will it last: Explore these interactive maps

The first total  eclipse over New York in 99 years  will be visible April 8. It's a sight not to be missed. Should you skip this one, the next total solar eclipse that can be seen in the United States will be in 2044 (visible in North Dakota and Montana) and 2045 (crossing from California to Florida.)

In addition to New York, the eclipse will travel through 11 other states. Two others (Tennessee and Michigan) will see small parts of it.

The shadow will be traveling at an average of about 2,300 miles per hour across New York state and will only take about 10 minutes, from one side of state to the other, said Dan Schneiderman, of Rochester Museum & Science Center.

Across North America, notable cities in the path of totality include Mazatlán and Torreón, Mexico; San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, Texas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo and Rochester, New York; Burlington, Vermont; and most of Montreal, Canada.

Follow the path of totality for solar eclipse 2024

What time will eclipse be on april 8, 2024, in westchester and new york city.

The Hudson Valley will not be in the path of totality but will see between 88 and 99 percent coverage. Starting at 2:11 p.m. April 8 in Westchester County, the moon will begin to appear to move in front of the sun. Maximum coverage begins at 3:25 p.m. By 4:36 p.m. the moon will have moved past the sun returning the light to normal.

2024 total solar eclipse arrival times in US

What happens during total solar eclipse.

The moon will line up perfectly between the Earth and the sun, blotting out the sunlight. It will take just a couple hours for the moon's shadow to slice a diagonal line from the southwest to the northeast across North America, briefly plunging communities along the track into darkness.

Among the cities smack dab in the action: Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis, Cleveland, Ohio; Rochester, Buffalo, New York; and Montreal — making for the continent’s biggest eclipse crowd.

But, practically everyone on the continent can catch at least a partial eclipse. The farther from the path of totality, the smaller the moon’s bite will be out of the sun.

How to safely view the eclipse

Do not look at the sun directly during the eclipse. Sunglasses will not protect your eyes, only use International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers  from a trusted source .

The American Astronomical Society states on its website:

• Always inspect your solar filter before use; if scratched, punctured, torn, or otherwise damaged, discard it. Read and follow any instructions printed on or packaged with the filter.
• Always supervise children using solar filters.
• If you normally wear eyeglasses, keep them on. Put your eclipse glasses on over them, or hold your handheld viewer in front of them.
• Stand still and cover your eyes with your eclipse glasses or solar viewer before looking up at the bright Sun. After looking at the Sun, turn away and remove your filter — do  not  remove it while looking at the Sun.
• Do  not  look at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or other optical device.
• Similarly, do not look at the Sun through an unfiltered camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while using your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewer in front of your eyes — the concentrated solar rays could damage the filter and enter your eyes, causing serious injury.
• Seek expert advice from an astronomer before using a solar filter with a camera, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device; note that solar filters must be attached to the  front  of any telescope, binoculars, camera lens, or other optics.

Specific to the April eclipse:

• If you are inside the path of totality, remove your solar filter  only  when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face and it suddenly gets quite dark. Experience totality, then, as soon as the bright Sun begins to reappear ,  replace your solar viewer to look at the remaining partial phases. Note that this applies only to viewing without optical aid (other than ordinary eyeglasses). Different rules apply when viewing or imaging the Sun through camera lenses, binoculars, or telescopes; consult an expert astronomer before using a solar filter with any type of magnifying optics.
• Outside the path of totality, and throughout a partial solar eclipse, there is no time when it is safe to look directly at the Sun without using a special-purpose solar filter that complies with the transmittance requirements of the  ISO 12312-2 international standard .

One can also indirectly view the eclipse through a pinhole projector, where one views a projected image through a small opening made in an index card or a piece of cardboard paper. Need to know how to make one? The  Jet Propulsion Laboratory  has instructions.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
