  • Eyekaytoo 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles What a wonderful collection of beautiful artwork I have been coming to London for very many decades but never took the time to come and explore the National Gallery. Finally, I had a spare Sunday , so took the chance to correct this sad omission on my part. The Sunday in question was the one when the Chinese New Year was being celebrated in early February. I was a bit put of by the longish queue waiting to get in to this marvelous building. But I didn't need to worry. The queue moved quickly and, having passed airport style security, I was in! And then it hit me. What a place! Where to start? I decided to simply wander around hoping to see works from Leonardo Da Vinci, Titian, Van Gogh to name but just a few. I wasn't to be disappointed. This place is huge and swallowed up all the people visiting it. I had no problems in simply sitting in front of some of my favourites and contemplating on the artistic marvels of talented people gone many centuries ago. I could have stayed longer - possibly enjoying a cup of tea and cakes in the cafeteria but I had to move on and out. But I'll be back later in the year - hopefully with a better plan on what to see. • ShropshireLass69 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles You May Need This Workaround To Visit The National Gallery Their website doesn't make it clear, but I'm afraid the National Gallery no longer has lockers that will take even a small case and their cloakroom won't accept one, either. When we visited, there were many people with cabin sized luggage getting turned away. I'm guessing they'd either just arrived in London, or were about to leave and wanted to kill a few hours, by taking in some great art. Anyway, they were all refused entry. They were told by staff on the doors that some nearby stations have coin operated lockers. Unfortunately, that is complete nonsense - they don't! DON'T GIVE UP, THERE IS A WORKAROUND. Charring Cross station is a 3 minute walk from the National Gallery - go there, enter the station using the entrance on the far right and almost immediately you will come to the 'Left Luggage' department on your right. Enter and tell them you want to leave your case with them and they will charge you £7.50 to leave it for a few hours. They will give you a ticket and put your case through a security scanner, so you know it's all legit. Worked well for us visiting the National Gallery, but would also work for anyone visiting London, who doesn't want to drag a case around with them the whole time. Other than that hiccup, it's fabulous to have so much brilliant art under one roof, free to enter and so accessible, in the middle of London. The lighting is a bit poor, so go on a sunny day, if you can and the descriptive plaques by the sides of the paintings are too small, but that's a common complaint in art galleries and museums. It's not rocket science that loads of people will gather round small plaques, desperately trying to read the tiny text, but galleries and museums seem to be oblivious to what Basil Fawlty would call 'the bleedin' obvious'. Make the plaques bigger! Better still, put an electronic screen beside major works, with clearly legible information covering the main areas of interest. Read more Written April 15, 2024
  • busymum4216 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Impressive A wide range of paintings of different styles. The Impressionist section contained some amazing art works that are world famous. I'm sure the other sections were equally impressive, but we were limited on time and only had a few hours. Use the guide leaflet to pick your area of interest, as it has several different areas. The cafe food was great and the loo was very quiet. Read more Written April 11, 2024

I’m not a museum-goer, so this review is from the point of view of someone who got outvoted on what to do. Turns out, this place was actually pretty cool. • U281BLlees 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A flying visit We only visited briefly this time as we didn’t have long and I just wanted to see specific Turners. I checked the website in advance to see which room the pictures would be in and discovered that it was room 34. Upon arrival at the gallery, it was actually quite difficult to navigate our way to this specific room. The rooms are not clearly marked as you pass through them. Sometimes the sign is on the wall other times it is above the door. There were not many members of staff around to ask either. Eventually, I found the paintings that I wanted, which was great to see them in real life as this was the purpose of my visit. It was very confusing, finding the toilets, which were downstairs. we definitely needed more time to explore the gallery, but due to our restrictions this was not possible. I did get to see what I wanted though. Read more Written March 22, 2024

  • DanKimSouthampton 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Complete philistine blown away ! Having a few hours to kill before catching a train, we visited the National Gallery, and how seriously impressed we were. The scale of the collection is vast, requiring many more hours than we had available. We saw enough to be wowed by some of the all-time great artists and their work. The artists who's work is on show reads like a collection of the most prominent people from history. I never appreciated the brilliance of artists like Rembrandt or da Vinci until stood a few feet away from their pure genius. A massively impressive, eye opening visit for someone with very little art knowledge. Read more Written March 15, 2024

The National Gallery of Art

' src=

Did you know the National Gallery of Art was a gift to the U.S. from Andrew W. Mellon? In 1936 Mellon offered to both fund the National Gallery of Art and donate his personal collection to get it started. Mellon is the real MVP!  Sadly, he died before the gallery opened.

When the NGA first opened in 1941, the collection consisted entirely of Mellon’s artworks, including 126 paintings and 26 sculptures. Today the National Gallery of Art is home to exhibits spanning some 124 thousand works by more than 13 thousand artists from the Renaissance to present day!

  • Admission is FREE (good lookin’ out Mellon)!
  • It’s open every day of the year except Christmas and New Years (and when the government shuts down).
  • NGA has the only Leonardo Da Vinci painting, Ginevra de’Benci , in the whole Western Hemisphere.
  • The largest mobile ever created by Alexander Calder is in the East Wing.

I know what you are thinking, that’s A LOT of art!

Don’t worry, whether you are a DC native,   National Gallery of Art enthusiast, or touring DC for the weekend, Museum Hack’s renegade tours have you covered!

To help you plan your visit, we’ve included a FAQ and logistical information section below on this page – scroll down to check out the details, including dining options, hours of operation, parking, and what you can and can’t bring into the museum. You can even take a quick virtual tour in the “Things to See at the National Gallery of Art” section just below!

Guide to the National Gallery of Art

5 things to see at the national gallery of art, hacks for visiting the national gallery of art, the national gallery of art: frequently asked questions & logistics, why we know so much about the national gallery of art, ginevra de' benci by leonardo da vinci.

This is the only da Vinci in the entire western hemisphere! If that’s not enough of a selling point for you, here are some fun facts to convince you why else it’s definitely worth seeing.

  • It’s hella old – 540 years and counting.
  • It has a front AND a back. That’s like having two Da Vinci’s in one.
  • There’s a crest on the back.
  • A close look at the seal on the back upper right corner tells the story of how our lady Ginevra came to the NGA (if you know how to read it). Curious? Here’s a hint: It involves Lichtenstein, a tea, and the FBI!
  • The woman who posed for the painting is the one and only Ginevra de Benci. She was a poet. Only one line of her poetry has survived history. If you come on our tour, you’ll find out what it is!

Example from the museum collection

The Portrait of Countess Ebba Sparre - Suspected Lover of a Queen

This woman was the intimate friend of Queen Christina of Sweden. Was she also her lesbian lover? We may never know. But there is quite a bit of evidence to suggest that this may have been the case.

Here’s the scoop:

Queen Christina took the throne of Sweden in 1632, at the age of 18. One of her ladies in waiting was Ebba Larsdotter Sparre. Queen Christina quickly nicknamed Sparre “la belle Comtesse”, and spent all her spare time with Sparre. When out together, she often called attention to Sparre’s beauty. She introduced her to the English ambassador as her ‘bed-fellow’, assuring him that Sparre’s intellect was as striking as her body. After a few years, Sparre was married off to a man of Queen Christina’s choosing, and soon thereafter the Queen completely changed her lifestyle, found a new hobby and became a Catholic. That was rather a big deal at the time! Sweden = Lutheran = no Catholic Queen possible. Christina was forced to abdicate the throne because once you go Catholic you never go back.

Example from the museum collection

Little Dancer by Degas

Degas only exhibited one sculpture in his entire life, and you’re looking at it!

When it was shown in Paris at the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition of 1881 , everyone hated it (one critic said she looked like a monkey), so Degas hid it away and no one saw it again until after he died. When his heirs opened his studio, they found dozens of sculptures, including this one. They hired a foundry to reproduce each one once, but decided to make 28 copies of this one. So she’s everywhere: the Musee d’Orsay, the Met, MFA Boston… but this one here? This is the original!

  • The tutus worn by the bronzes vary from museum to museum.
  • If you look closely you can see human hair in her braid!

Example from the museum collection

The East Wing

The East Wing is the modern and contemporary wing of the National Gallery of Art. You can get to it from the west building through an attached underground light tunnel. Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the last Calder in existence hanging from the ceiling.

When asked to give the piece a title, Calder replied, “You don’t name a baby until it is born.”

Unfortunately, he died one year before the finished mobile was hung, so he never witnessed the “birth” of his last major commission and it remains unnamed.

But there are plenty more to see! NGA boasts the world’s largest display of works by Alexander Calder (40+ works).

In the East Wing,  you’ll also find artists like Georgia O’Keefe, Mark Rothko and a giant blue cock on the roof. Get your mind out of the gutter – it’s a rooster. We keep it classy here at the NGA.

Example from the museum collection

The Sculpture Garden

If you’ve spent a day at the museum and find yourself needing some fresh air, check out the National Gallery of Art’s sculpture garden just next door!

T his six-acre garden was designed as an outdoor gallery for monumental sculpture. Whether you’re into monumental sculpture or not, it’s a great place for a rest in the midst of the Mall. Pack a picnic, buy a pitcher of Sangria and relax in the sun. it’s a great way to kick off your weekend!

During the summer they put on a popular Jazz in the Garden concert series every Friday. In winter they turn the fountain into an ice rink. You can rent skates and try it out, or just grab a festive cocktail and sit on the sidelines.

Example from the museum collection

  • The NGA has THE BEST gift shops in all of DC. Make sure you check ‘em out!
  • There are four dining options on site, but if you’re fighting museum fatigue, we recommend the gelato in the lower level cafe. è delizioso!

Our company, Museum Hack, leads renegade tours of the world’s best museums, including at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Our guides are experts in the obscure, and collectors of amazing hidden stories about the art and museum; many of which the museum staff isn’t allowed to share.

When you come on a tour of the National Gallery of Art with Museum Hack, expect:

  • Fun games! Tell us which artworks you’d match with an emoji. Recreate the famous Watson and the Shark painting in a tableau vivant posing contest. Create your own High School Superlatives with the portraits.
  • A world of gossip. Find out the story of Whistler’s ex-mistress, who later posed nude for the well-known painting, Origine du Monde . Why Turner and Constable, two artists who hated each other in life, are now hanging side by side in the same gallery.
  • Subversive stories. There’s a painting of a woman with a really fabulous, fancy, LARGE hairdo. Why? Because she was a spy for the crown who would hide secrets woven into her hair. A Vermeer painting that’s only “attributed” to the artist, as it’s authenticity is still in question!
  • Hidden insights. The museum often leaves out the best, most interesting information, like where to find the Queen’s official dwarf. At first glance, you might think that he’s a kid, but we can set you straight. There’s also a secret room downstairs that has pictures of monkeys doing human things (most casual visitors don’t know how to find it)!
  • Zany photos. We love museum selfies! Art museums always make great backgrounds. We’ll even challenge you to use your camera to complete challenges and play games during the tour.

No matter how many times you’ve visited the National Gallery of Art, we’ll show you the “Un-highlights” you have never seen or heard of before.

Building on the “reset” – the vice president’s visit to moscow.

Today, before a packed auditorium at Moscow State University, Vice President Biden delivered a powerful speech to U.S. and Russian students and business leaders. Echoing messages conveyed during his earlier meetings with Russian President Dimitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin over the course of his three-day visit, Vice President Biden hailed the successful “reset” of U.S.-Russian relations and reiterated his call for broader economic cooperation between the two countries.

Issuing the strongest support yet for Russia’s entry into the World Trade Organization, the Vice President said,“it’s better for Americans and better for Russians to be able to trade with each other under predictable and transparent rules.”

On the issue of human rights and the status of democracy and the rule of law in Russia – a topic discussed at length in meetings with Russian civil society and political opposition leaders earlier today, the Vice President said:  “History showsthat in industrialized societies, economic modernization and political modernization must go hand and hand.”

Yesterday, the Vice President and Dr. Biden visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden. As a military honor guard looked on, the Vice President observed a moment of silence in recognition of the Russian soldiers who died in World War II and ceremonially placed a wreath that read “To those who fell in the fight against fascism, from the American people.”

Later, the Vice President attended a signing ceremony for the sale of Boeing 777 jets to Aeroflot – which will support more than 10,000 jobs at home - in the impressive building of the Moscow School of Management at Skolkovo, an area that Moscow hopes to develop into the Russian equivalent of Silicon Valley. Afterwards, he and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov led a roundtable discussion with Russian and American business leaders. The Vice President added that beyond negotiations between our governments, the U.S. is also relying on the growing connections between Russian and American business leaders and leaders in civil society to build a comprehensive relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

Drake Posts Metro Boomin 'Drumline' Meme, Validates Leaked Diss Lyrics

Drake to metro boomin i said play those drums, h*e ass... posts 'drumline' meme.

Drake is leaning into his 'Push Ups' lyrics, confirming it's not AI ... but isn't above playing cyber games himself -- and Metro Boomin is his first target. 😈

Shortly after Metro was named as the leaker behind Drake and Lil Yachty ' s "Jumbotron S*** Poppin" reference track leak, Drake hopped on IG and posted a meme video that plastered Metro's face on Nick Cannon 's body in a scene from the movie "Drumline."

The latest Drake track hit the net on Saturday and went into chopper mode at everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Rick Ross and MB also caught half a bar when he rapped ... "Metro, shut your h*e-ass up and make some drums, n****!!!" Yep, clearly his favorite part of the rap roast.

If you remember, Drake and UMG took swift action when an AI track of him and The Weeknd started to get positive reviews -- but he's completely validating 'Push Ups' here.

This beef's pettiness level is only rivaled by the growing number of characters ... Rick Ross is currently claiming to the world Drake didn't pen some of his biggest hits.

Another response incoming in 5, 4, 3...

The National Gallery announces Asia Tour

First venue is shanghai museum from 17 january 2023.

Issued November 2022

'Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery' – a new exhibition of 52 paintings by artists such as Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Constable, Monet, and Van Gogh – will be touring Asia during 2023 and early 2024.

As the Gallery prepares for NG200 – its year-long Bicentenary celebration from 10 May 2024 – significant building work in Trafalgar Square has given us an exceptional opportunity to bring even more people and paintings together globally by offering a chance for Asian audiences to access our collection without having to travel to London, especially welcome at a time when international travel in the region is still limited.

This new series builds on the hugely successful tour to Australia and Japan in 2020 and 2021, which was enjoyed by more than 700,000 people, along with numerous other ongoing National Gallery activities in the Asia region including learning and retail experiences, plus digital and brand partnerships.

The first venue for 'Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery' will be the Shanghai Museum from 17 January – 7 May 2023 and will be the National Gallery’s first-ever exhibition in China. Two further venues will be announced soon.

'Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery' is in essence a ‘National Gallery in miniature’ – a selection representative of the Gallery’s history which offers audiences a concise and beautiful history of Western art as uniquely told by the National Gallery’s collection.

The exhibition has eight sections - Botticelli and Painting in 15th-Century Italy, Raphael and the Italian High Renaissance, Gossaert and the Northern Renaissance, Caravaggio and Baroque painting in Italy and Spain, Rembrandt and 17th-Century Painting in Northern Europe, Canaletto and European Painting in the Eighteenth Century, Van Gogh and the Impressionists and Turner and Painting in Britain.

Key loans include Sandro Botticelli, Three Miracles of Saint Zenobius (about 1500), Raphael, The Garvagh Madonna (about 15010–11), Jan Gossaert, A Young Princess (about 1530–2), Caravaggio, Boy bitten by a Lizard (about 1594–5), Rembrandt, Self Portrait at the Age of 63 (1669) Canaletto, Venice: Entrance to the Cannaregio (probably 1734–42), Van Gogh, Long Grass with Butterflies (1890) Claude Monet, Irises (about 1914-1917), John Constable, Stratford Mill (1820) and Turner, The Parting of Hero and Leander (before 1837).

Dr Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery, says ‘I am delighted that the National Gallery is building on its highly successful tours of Australia and Japan and reaching new audiences across Asia and internationally.

The Gallery has an important role to play in promoting the UK’s globally recognised position as a centre for culture and the arts, and we remain passionately committed to cultural exchange internationally.

The tour demonstrates how the Gallery continues to innovate in the way it designs and delivers partnerships, with the exhibition representing what is essentially the ‘National Gallery in miniature’. It is also a reminder of the continued interest of audiences from around the world in the European tradition and the world-renowned collection we are custodians of here at the National Gallery.'

Dr Chu Xiaobo, Director of the Shanghai Museum, says 'We’re thrilled to work together to bring the masterpieces from the National Gallery to Shanghai, to share its prestige collection of western art with Chinese audience for the first time. As a museum to house top-class Chinese art, the Shanghai Museum is also proud of embracing and demonstrating other civilizations and arts across the globe in the past half century. This exhibition would be the most ambitious project to present so many big names in the western art history and gather their great works for the first time in Chinese mainland. It would be a feast for the eyes and the soul as well. We hope the beauty of art could be shared and appreciated within people from different cultures.'
