Sharjah Launches New Brand Logo and Tourism Campaign

ARP Media

Credit By: ZAWYA

On Sunday, the Sharjah government unveiled its new brand logo and a captivating campaign titled ‘Your Sharjah,” offering a glimpse into the remarkable growth the northern emirate has experienced over the past 52 years.

Symbolizing Opportunities with the New Logo

The newly introduced brand logo, featuring windows in its design, symbolizes the vast opportunities for residents and visitors to explore and uncover the myriad tourist attractions and exciting developments across the emirate.

Emirate’s Evolution Under Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi

Sheikh Fahim Bin Sultan Bin Khalid Al Qasimi, executive chairman of the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah, expressed, “Sharjah has undergone significant growth over the last 52 years under the leadership of Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It was time to encapsulate that with a new and modern brand. This identity resonates with people and embodies the essence of our emirate with the tagline’ Your Sharjah’ .”

Collaborative Effort in Brand Development

A collaborative effort involving multiple departments from Sharjah government entities contributed to developing the campaign and unveiling the new brand.

Highlighting Sharjah’s Excellence

Sheikh Fahim emphasized the dedication and hard work of the team in crafting a logo and identity that highlights Sharjah’s excellence as a tourism destination, a thriving economic hub for regional and global investment and trade, and a repository of rich culture and heritage waiting to be explored. He acknowledged the challenge of developing a brand amidst Sharjah’s extensive history but expressed confidence in the team’s efforts.

Continuing the Tradition of Hospitality

When asked about the continuation of the emirate’s famous tagline, ‘Smile, you’re in Sharjah,” Sheikh Fahim responded with a smile, stating, “With the abundance of smiles in Sharjah, it is challenging not to say ‘Smile, you’re in Sharjah.” Additionally, I would add, ‘Smile, you’re in your Sharjah,” as the emirate offers something for everyone – whether it’s discovering stunning beaches, heritage sites, archaeological wonders, or educational institutions.”

Addressing the gathering, Shaikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Executive Committee for the SICC 2014 Celebrations, said the selection of Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital comes in culmination of its numerous cultural and intellectual achievements, which align with the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

“Thanks to its abundant intellectual treasures, the emirate has managed to establish its cultural and Islamic identity so as to remain a source of pride for us, as well as for Arabs and Muslims,” he said.

He pointed to the emirate’s unique set of Islamic edifices and museums and said it is poised to include new heritage, tourism, cultural and architectural projects early next year.

According to Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Isesco), Sharjah’s selection is based on its long history of disseminating science, culture and knowledge, and its edifices that sum up an entire history in their architecture.

The organisation pointed to the mosques, cultural institutions, museums and heritage markets as well as the artistic, literary and theatrical arenas in the emirate. It also pointed to the cultural and intellectual events that the emirate holds throughout the year.

The Gem of the Arab World: Sharjah as Islamic Culture Capital

sharjah arab tourism capital logo

With a unique cultural radiance supporting both heritage and contemporary progression, it is unsurprising that Sharjah was crowned the Islamic Culture Capital 2014 . Sharjah was first recognised in 1998 by UNESCO for the emirate’s role in the cultural environment of the Arab world. Since then the emirate has maintained its commitment to culture, both historical and contemporary making it an ideal candidate for the 2014 title.

sharjah arab tourism capital logo

Sharjah is and has historically been distinguished by a strong cultural and intellectual legacy and holds a prominent position within the United Arab Emirates and wider Arab region. Sharjah is also the third largest emirate in the UAE, forming a metropolitan trio with Dubai and Ajman. The cultural prominence of Sharjah in contemporary society, although based strongly on heritage, was heavily influenced by the creation of cultural institutions by order of the Ruler of Sharjah , His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.

It was his wish to establish a number of institutions that would help realise his cultural vision of the emirate. This resulted in a plethora of activities and projects spanning heritage conservation, the construction of museums, artistic and scientific centres and other cultural hubs. The strategy even reached to setting up a television satellite channel that would promote and reflect cultural values in the UAE. The interaction between Islamic and other cultures was also actively encouraged by this cultural strategy. As an established centre for culture and industry Sharjah is home to numerous scientific research facilities, manuscript libraries, archaeological centres and museums such as the Museum of Islamic Civilisation , the Maritime Museum and the Calligraphy Museum among many others. It is therefore unsurprising that Sharjah is a magnet for researchers and enthusiasts of arts, culture and science alike. In particular, Sharjah is noted for its Islamic monuments, schools, mosques and public parks in addition to multiple high-profile literary and intellectual institutions. However, a key feature of Sharjah is that it has maintained a healthy respect for history and tradition whilst striving to forge a vibrant, contemporary culture, making significant contributions to Islamic and Arab culture across the board. Heritage and tradition continues to be influential within the UAE and wider Islamic and Arab culture. Sharjah itself has deep historical roots in traditional arts and crafts practices. Trades and skills dating back to desert tribes influenced by migration practices have been handed down through the generations and continue to represent a key part of Islamic culture. In Sharjah the main crafts and trades are pottery, bridal chests , weaving, embroidery, daggers and knives, ornate carved doors, perfumes, incense and henna. Many of these crafts are still popular activities among locals today and can be found throughout the emirate. This maintenance and celebration of Sharjah’s arts and crafts heritage is a key element in the cultural agenda that permeates the emirate’s contemporary society.

Among the vast number of prominent projects guided by the ruler’s cultural vision perhaps the most influential and highly praised is the Culture Without Borders project. Through this scheme a library of 50 books was created in the home of every local family in the emirate. With a particular focus towards children, Culture Without Borders aimed to promote and encourage both literacy and a broader cultural development within the emirate.

The attribution of the Islamic Culture Capital title not only recognises Sharjah’s previous cultural achievements but also serves to further the cultural development of Sharjah. The impact has been demonstrated by the emirate’s recent cultural offering and the extent of Sharjah’s future cultural and Islamic events programme.

Here is a selection of some of the best cultural events taking place in Sharjah in conjunction with the emirate’s appointment as the Islamic Culture Capital 2014.

Clusters of Light

The Clusters of Light festival kicked off celebrations of the appointment of Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital in spectacular style. Bringing together talented artists, theatrical performers, cinematographers and scholars from the Arab and international community this theatrical artwork culminated in five illuminating performances telling the story of the Prophet Muhammad. Clusters of Light represented the amalgamation of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi’s cultural strategy and his vision for Sharjah. The monumental event itself celebrated Islamic culture and heritage whilst also conveying a strong message of tolerance and human values. Clusters of Light has come to be recognised as an artwork of high international value, sure to remain engraved in the memories of those who witnessed the spectacle.

Sharjah Light Festival

For a nine-day period in February 2014 twelve public spaces across the city of Sharjah were illuminated by a myriad of light and sound installations as part of the fourth Sharjah Light Festival and in celebration of the emirate’s appointment as the Islamic Culture Capital 2014. The city, its architecture, parks and gardens were transformed by a diverse group of talented international and local artists such as Laurent Langlois, Antoine Néron-Bancel and TILT into a wonderland of emotive and mysterious installations. Through a symphony of light, colour, sound and image the fourth edition of the acclaimed festival not only shed light on the talent of participants but also on the rich heritage and architectural splendour of Sharjah.

Sharjah Light Festival

Children’s Reading Festival

In keeping with festival patron, Ruler of Sharjah’s vision of cultural development through literacy, the sixth Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival will be held under the name Discover Friends for Life. The festival itself was conceived to develop children’s culture, skills and talents whilst also providing a platform for engagement in the wider cultural milieu of Sharjah. The 11-day event, held from 15 to 25 April 2014, features 124 publishing houses from 17 countries and 95 writers, artists and academics from the UAE and abroad making it the largest edition of the festival to date. The naming of Sharjah as the Islamic Culture Capital 2014 has also influenced this year’s programme of events in the addition of an award-winning interactive exhibition by 1001 Inventions which sets out to highlight and celebrate the scientific and cultural achievements of Muslim civilisation.

Sharjah Biennial

Sharjah Biennial is a longstanding feature in the Islamic culture calendar. Established in 1993 this dynamic biennial has been instrumental to broadening the visual arts scene in the UAE. Considered a cultural pillar and one of the most prominent factors in the development of artistic awareness, Sharjah Biennial claims responsibility for raising the standard of aesthetic tastes throughout the region. The biennial itself has a flexible structure enabling the presentation of dynamic works of contemporary art and numerous professional arts programmes. Cultural enrichment is at the forefront of the Sharjah Biennial’s agenda alongside the support of young artists. Since 2003 when management of the event was taken over by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, Sharjah Biennial has evolved from a bi-annual cultural event into a prominent display of cultural and artistic production regarded highly across national and international art forums. Exploring Sharjah: The Cultural Capital of UAE

Sharjah skyline

Located on the shoreline of the Arabian Gulf, just a short journey from the more famous city of Dubai, lies Sharjah, the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Despite often being in the shadow of Dubai, Sharjah has come a long way to assert itself as the cultural hotspot in the region, attracting more and more visitors each year. From its thriving arts scene to historical landmarks that are significant to the surrounding area, Sharjah is a city that deserves further exploration. This article will investigate Sharjah, highlighting what has made it such a cultural juncture. No matter what you look for when visiting a city, we're sure you will be satisfied after visiting the incredible Sharjah.

Transportation

Getting to Sharjah is also relatively simple. The city is home to an international airport, so you'll have plenty of options whether you prefer private jet charter or commercial travel. Similarly, you could fly into Dubai, where an even larger airport exists in the region. You may not even notice when you cross over Dubai when heading to Sharjah due to their proximity; these cities are just a half-hour drive from each other. If you prefer ease and comfort, private air travel is the way to go, especially if you want to avoid the long queues and waiting that's often the case with busy airports.

Getting from A to B in Sharjah is a straightforward process, largely thanks to its modern transportation system. While tourists often choose to either hire a car or take a taxi, there is the option to use the city's bus network, which runs efficiently and is considered quite affordable. Moreover, the recently opened Sharjah Tram has improved things further, providing an even more convenient way to get around the city, ideally linking residential and cultural areas. If you want to head a little further afield, you could head over to Dubai or other cities by taking a short ride on the metro — it is that simple.

Attractions and Landmarks

Ajman fort courtyard, Sharjah

While Sharjah may not have Dubai's imposing skyline, it still has buildings that inspire respect and awe. Sharjah's unique landmarks tell a story of how the Emirate came to be. You should watch for the Eye of the Emirates, an enormous observation wheel similar to what can be found in London, which offers incredible views of the city from its location in Al Qasba. If you'd prefer something more historic, you could visit the Al Hisn Fort, built in 1820 in the traditional Emirati architectural style. This fort provides a glimpse into the past, showing how far the region has come in a relatively short time.

Similarly, by the number of high-level educational institutions, you can see how much education means to those in Sharjah. Previously, many students from the Gulf states would choose to continue their studies abroad due to the better level of education. Still, in recent years, this trend appears to be slowing as Sharjah and the surrounding cities continue to invest. You should visit Al Noor Island in Sharjah, where you'll find the perfect blend of art, literature, and nature. If you’re interested in nature and want to visit natural attractions, it's also home to an incredible butterfly sanctuary.

Historical Significance

pearl in a shell

Sharjah is a city steeped in culture and history , making it a point of interest for those wanting to explore the region's past further. Those running the city have taken steps to carefully preserve Sharjah's past while keeping an eye on the future. The Heart of Sharjah is a heritage project tasked with restoring and rejuvenating the city's Old Town, particularly taking care of its historical buildings and winding alleyways. This initiative aims to attract more tourists to an essential part of the city while also paying respect to its past, tracing its origins as a fishing village to its current status as a critical player in the area.

Additionally, Sharjah is a hotspot for those working in the pearl-driving industry. Archaeologists report that pearl diving has been a tradition in the region for around 7,000 years, making it a significant sector. You should visit the Sharjah Archaeology Museum to learn more about the pearl diving industry and other fascinating history. There, you'll find artifacts dating back centuries, all the way back to the Bronze Age, providing a unique insight into the region's history.

Booking a Trip to Sharjah

Sharjah is regarded by many as being the best-kept secret in the United Arab Emirates. Despite being dwarfed by cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah is still a significant city in the region.  As the cultural epicenter of the UAE, Sharjah's appeal lies in its ability to effortlessly mix tradition with modernity, offering a truly enriching experience for every visitor.

Visit Sharjah, the cultural capital of the Arab world

TRAVEL TRENDS , SHARJAH Updated : Aug 14, 2019, 13:19 IST

sharjah arab tourism capital logo

Sharjah, the culture capital

Recognized by UNESCO as the Cultural Capital of the UAE in 1998, Sharjah is well-known for its efforts to preserve the history and heritage of the land. From ancient archaeological sites that are thousands of year old, to cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions, Sharjah not only champions authentic Arabian life, but also works hard to integrate it into its modern landscape. The many heritage sites, museums, art galleries, and preserved traditions collectively make this emirate a treasure trove for the history lover. Below are some enriching encounters waiting to be discovered.

Heart of Sharjah

The Heart of Sharjah is the largest historical preservation and restoration project in the UAE. Planned over a 15-year period (scheduled to be completed by 2025), it seeks to restore historical buildings, construct new structures according to traditional architecture and transform them into hotels, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and souks, where current and future generations can experience Sharjah's cultural and social fabric. A visit to the Heart of Sharjah is a journey through history, with its souks, forts and traditional buildings that feature authentic architectural styles; all representing the emirate’s unique character. The district hosts a number of events including the acclaimed Sharjah Biennial and Sharjah Light Festival.

Sharjah Fort

This edifice, built in 1823, was once Sharjah government headquarters and the residence of Al Qawasim ruling family. The fort is built with coral stones, collected from the depths of the Arabian Gulf. The walls are covered with a light brown plaster and the doors are made of teak wood. Mangrove trunks and parts of palm trees (fronds, leaves and fibers) were used to build the ceiling. The fort is now a converted museum housing a world of local history and charm. Exhibits include old coins, weighing scales, jewellery, arms and ammunition, displays of the pearl trade and plenty of amazing photographs and maps.

Al Noor Island

Al Noor Island is a lovely, intriguing destination for residents and tourists; it can be reached only on foot (as it is a car-free zone), via a winding pedestrian bridge across the Khalid Lagoon. The island is a perfect example of Sharjah’s modern and innovative take on culture with lighting displays of twinkling fairy lights, contemporary sculptures by some of the world’s most famous artists, stunning butterflies floating in the Butterfly House, and the serene Literature Pavilion–this place has tons to offer. The island brings nature, art and architecture together in one fascinating composition.

Sharjah Classic Car Museum

This unique museum is an ideal destination for classic cars lovers. This collection of more than 100 vintage cars, classic motorcycles, and bicycles, manufactured in the early 20th century; it includes many models from Sharjah’s ruler, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi’s personal collection. The oldest car in the collection is a 1915 Dodge. Exhibiting rare models, luxury brands and military machines, the museum is divided into five major sections, each representing historical developments in the automotive industry. In addition, the museum organizes interactive experiments and educational experiences for visitors of all ages.

Sharjah Heritage Museum

Nestled within the Heart of Sharjah, this museum is dedicated to highlighting the land’s authentic heritage and Sharjah’s rich culture over the past decades. It also emphasizes the value of deep-rooted Arabian customs. The museum explores the diverse environments, trades and traditions that shaped the lives of Sharjah’s early inhabitants. Costumed mannequins, large-scale photographs and a selection of jewellery, pottery and other handicrafts bring to life a past when fishing, farming, pearling and maritime trade drove the area’s economy.

Bait Al Naboodah

An evocative house museum dating back to 1845, Bait Al Naboodah is set around a sun-drenched courtyard with walls made of coral. The charming two-storey house reveals the life and times of Obaid Al Naboodah, a pearl merchant who conducted business in India, Africa and France. You can wander through the various rooms, admiring the craftsmanship and ingenuity of traditional Gulf architecture, in an age before air-conditioning, and learn about the daily routines of the prominent pearling family that once lived there.

Sharjah’s Souks

Sharjah’s commitment to preserving traditions and culture means that even Sharjah’s souks or markets have been lovingly preserved; some of these have also been upgraded with modern conveniences like airconditioning. It is highly recommended that visitors add the souks to their itinerary while in Sharjah for an intriguing shopping experience. One of the prominent markets, the Central Souk, decorated with beautiful blue tiles on its external façade is famous for antiques, gold & silver jewellery, gems, rugs, curios and antique Omani and Yemeni jewellery.

In Souk Al Arsah, commonly held to be the oldest marketplace in the region, shoppers can find handicrafts, wooden Arabian bridal and pearl chests, copper coffee pots, handmade jewellery, attars and oils, handmade woven garments, medicinal herbs, Suleimani chai and Arabic coffee.

Souk Saqr or Iranian Souk is well-known for a variety of spices, palm-leaf baskets and handicrafts. Another interesting market is Souq Al Jubail, which caters to the local demand for fish, meat and fruits. Another very vibrant souk is Souk Al Shanasiyah, which specializes in local designers and their unique wares. The shops are divided, with the artisans busy at work on one side, and their goods for sale on the other.

Artistic monuments and memorials can be spotted all around Sharjah-–in parks, on university grounds and even in the middle of roundabouts. Impressive structures like the Cultural Square, Cultural Capital of the Arab World Monument, Martyrs’ Monument, Al Rolla Statue, etc., serve as reminders of the emirate’s revered past and inspiring achievements. With 1.7 million square hectares of water this tranquil lagoon amidst the hustle and bustle of Sharjah city next to the Blue Souk is truly a beautiful place to unwind and relax, especially around the sunset. In the evenings stay back or take a seat at one of the many cafes and restaurants at Al Jazeera park facing the vibrant musical fountain show in the middle of the lagoon. It is the third tallest fountain in the world the water jets of which reaches a height of 100m and is fantastic to watch. It is one of the main attractions to Sharjah and the fountain show is held daily between 4.00PM and 10.00PM
