I had one of the best times on this all day near 12 hour trip with PR Tours! Our tour guide was Cruz. Overall he was very nice and helpful during the tour. We chose to do the El Yunque/BioBay combo tour. First you're picked up directly from the hotel around 9:30 am. They come straight to the lobby. You will be in a rather small shuttle and depending on how large your group is it may get cramped and stuffy in the shuttle vehicle. Lucky for me we had a great group that was a lot of fun. We really bonded in such a short period of time. First stop is El Yunque national rainforest. On the drive to the rainforest you watch a film that previews some of what you will be seeing in person and gives some historical info. Cruz brought us up to the very highest part of the rainforest so that we could hike mostly downward which is a hell of a lot easier and less strenuous. I recommend water shoes for the hike. You will stop at a waterfall and get a chance to swim around which was definitely the highlight of the day! After you leave El Yunque you stop at a strip mall of authentic Puerto Rican food stands. You eat (own expense) for about an hour and then go to a really nice beach for another hour and a half. After that you will be driven to the marina where you will start your kayaking. At this point the BioBay is run by a separate company. So I can't really include them in this review. All I will say is that the BioBay is not what you think it is if you have ever googled pictures of it. That's definitely not what you will be seeing on this tour. After you return from kayaking your original tour guide drops you back off at your hotel. All in all it's an exhaustive 12 hour day but it is an amazing experience and well worth the money!

I literally just returned from this tour with Erik as our tour guide. Me and the wife couldn't be happier with our choice. Not only was it cheaper than what other tours offer, but Erik was very informative and was full of energy. He goes out of his way to snap group pictures like we were a family. Honestly, yes he is strict on time, but that's because there's a schedule he needs to follow because other groups have to be accommodated for the biobay tour. Anyways, I wouldn't hesitate to book another trip with Erik and PR fun tours. -TJ

We went on a rainforest bio bay combo tour yesterday. This was a tremendous experience. Our guide Erik was knowledgeable and friendly. Swimming in a waterfall is great but that water is COLD! Be sure to bring some water shoes. Tip: request the combo tour! It's an all day experience that gives you a little of everything. Morning in the rainforest, hiking and swimming in a waterfall. Afternoon sitting on a beach. Evening kayaking under the stars in a bio bay.

In short, this is the most amazing experience I have ever had in my life. If you do NOTHING else while in Puerto Rico, you HAVE to do the Bio Bay tour. We hopped in the kayaks right before sunset and were paddling through the mangroves as the sun was going down. Since I was on this trip solo, one of the guides offered to do all of the paddling and told me to just relax and enjoy. No complaints here! The warm and salty air, the swishing of the paddles through the water... it was incredibly relaxing. We (he) paddled until we reached a lagoon at the end of the mangroves. It was pitch dark by this time. There was no moon, but more stars than I've even seen. Some of the group members even saw a shooting star pass by overhead. As we stilled our kayaks and gathered them closely into a group, these little tiny shrimp started jumping into our kayaks. As we put them back in the water, it started to glow each time we touched it. My guide told me to cup some of the water in my hands and blow on it. It started to sparkle and shimmer as if there was glitter in it. Then he told me to take some and pour it on my arm; again it sparkled and shimmered like a heavenly glitter as it ran down. As we all dragged our hands and paddles through the water, streaks of beautiful electric blue illuminated the path they followed. The trip back was almost a surreal experience as our kayaks and paddles carved a bright blue path through the dark mangroves. It was a simply magical experience.

I arranged the El Yunque rainforest tour in PR for our trip last September. The yelp reviews about Eric were so amazing that I HAD to book him too! The reviews didn't lie!!! The tour was amazing because Eric made it that way. Sharing stories and telling us about the history of Puerto Rico. The trees the plant names the fruits the flowers.. There was not a question Eric couldn't answer and as we climbed, walked, and swam he was with us the whole time taking photos, holding bags... Just going above and beyond what a general tour guide does.

The rainforest is beautiful, the beach was refreshing, and the bio bay was a lot of fun. I will separately review the bio bay kayaking tour since that was run by a separate company. What you pay for on a tour versus hiring a driver is a positive experience with excellent customer service and a fun tour guide. For that I would give this tour 1 star. Our tour guide Eric was inexcusably rude and condescending to me. He suggested we get breakfast in Plaza Colon which my group did. We didn't know that it would take more than 35 minutes to order sandwiches to go at the cafe there - this would have been good info for Eric to give us if the 9am start time was so strict. Eric berated me (and only me, not the whole group) before 9am for our group not being ready to go. Yes, we weren't ready at 9am, but that does not excuse how Eric talked to me or my group. We felt treated like children and not like customers. He told me the reason for his outburst was that we were picking up another group - I talked to them and they were expecting to be picked up later and didn't feel inconvenienced at all. He was condescending the rest of the trip, especially to the women. He kept commenting on the race of people on the tour. Eric misstated some of the facts he told us, and when people corrected him, he ignored them. My group would have preferred if the hike was a little longer or more challenging but for a combo tour it was a good sample of El Yunque. The restaurant we stopped at had very limited choices, especially for vegetarians / vegans or people that don't want to eat deep fried food. It was more of a street food vendor than a restaurant. I would recommend going to see El Yunque, Luquillo beach, and the bio bay - but not with this company! I am only giving this tour 2 stars because they were able to accommodate my large group with short notice after our other plans fell through. Edit: What lovely customer service from the owner that continues to berate clients. Why would you want to risk being treated so poorly when there are many other tour companies available?

Thank you very much for your review and it's true the Rainforest, beaches and the Biobay are very amazing places to visit here in Puerto Rico and we visit all of these activities in one day. Here are some tips of what not to do when you book a tour on a group tour : First off when your pick up time is set for 9am you need to be where your pick up location is set, not inside a restaurant ordering food because you are not responsible enough to get up early and have breakfast and be ready for your pick up not when I call you and ask where are you you say we are here waiting for you which you where not then make excuses as to why your late and why we have to wait for you to finish eating then a 1/2 hr late then arrive to your pick up location and give more excuses and then say (Well I thought this is a private tour and yell at me for this I said you owe myself and our other guests an apology for making everyone else's pick ups late as well and no the other guests where not happy with you either and because you booked everyone under your name and you are the only contact and your in charge of making sure you and your friends are where they are supposed to be at the time given basically when you act like children you will be treated as children and there was no out burst you obviously can't follow instructions or you do not care about anyone else other than yourselves. It's amazing to me how you talk about what your friends would have preferred a more challenging hike or a vegan restaurant ? You had breakfast a non vegan restaurant during your pick up but that wasn't important to you at that time but very important later in the day and where we do stop for lunch has many vegetarian options including rice and beans and it's not street vendor food it's a real restaurant. As for misinformation it seems to be you are very misinformed because my degrees are in history and tourism and I don't give misinformation so when your corrected when we are discussing FACTS about Puerto Rico and it's history and explaining the different types of people and there native roots perhaps listing to your Tourguide instead of trying to talk over him might be a better option you might learn something new but that was not going to happen because you came with your own agenda and not willing to be on a tour with other people which brings me to my last point, I wonder why your other tour was canceled and that's why you booked with me ? It's seems you have a few more problems other than you can't find a vegetarian dish !!!!!

Speaking as a hotel concierge on the island, I can assure you that PR Tours is the most responsible, knowledgable and client-centered tour company I have ever worked with. The independent owner/tour guide's name is Erik, and no matter what I can always count on him to give the hotel guests the type of excursion they are looking for. Professionally, Erik is reliable and always communicative with important details such as pricing, pick-up time, things to bring and appropriate dress. A huge FYI to visiting tourists, many tour guides are NOT certified! If you have the opportunity of meeting Erik by booking a tour, you will see his certifications on his official badge. This is very important to how your experience will play out while on a tour. A knowledgable guide is better than one wasted money on. You can contact him through either phone, text or email and are guaranteed a response in no more than 30 minutes tops. Wow! What a breath of fresh air in comparison to other companies I have tried calling 10+ times in the past while trying to book a guest! An extra invisible 6th star for his nifty, live online booking featured on his website. By far, the easiest and most efficient way of booking on the island. If you already know which tour you are interested in booking (such as the Bio Bay. Who doesn't already have the expectation of visiting the bay?), then that is your immediate opportunity to get set up. Since I'm using the Bio Bay as a reference, I will also note that this excursion is almost (..almost!) impossible to book without a 2 week in advance reservation. However, Erik always has 14 spots pre-reserved and available EVERY NIGHT for the bio bay. People, if you are debating between companies, look no further. You have found a goldmine! Enjoy! And other concierge, meet your dream-come-true, hassle-free, easy-to-book tour company. At last!

Had THE BEST experience EVER doing the El Yunque Rainforest Tour. Our tour guide Eric was beyond amazing- he is SO passionate and knowledgeable and FUN! We had no idea what to expect...and to wake up at 7 am after partying on vacation to hike all day---I was like---ummmm I don't know if I can do this. I almost stayed home. I was still half asleep when I got into the van and then it was just instant laughs and fun. The good vibes continued all day. There were 5 girls in my group, another couple (C&C) and a group of 3 other girls. Everyone got along great! Another guy joined our group and we loved him too. Eric started the tour with a background history of El Yunque. I am usually not a tour person- I like to do my own thing and if I'm on a tour- I'm like: let's get to the exciting part already....I don't like to sit and listen...BUT Eric was SO entertaining and informative I found myself hanging on to every word. And then when it was time to do the actual hike- he explained as we went along, took some great behind the scenes pics and when we got to the waterfall- was very helpful in taking pics as well. We made it to the end and stopped a great authentic spot for what was my fave food the whole trip....and pina coladas. This was the best part of my vacation and I just want to thank Eric for making it so special for us!

Terrible experience. Total waste of money. I booked the rain forest + kayak bio bay tour. You figured that paying $150 + taxes (comes up to almost $180 you would have something decent. No. The tour guide Jose picked us up around 9am. The weather was bad. cloudy and rainy and they didn't cancel the tour. They won't cancel it for anything because they obviously just care about the money. With rain was impossible to see any birds or any animals in the forest. we couldn't bathe in the waterfall because of the rain too. The path was muddy and very slippery. So we just walked around while Jose spoke about many types of bamboo and showed pictures on this phone on how good this tour was a day before when you could actually have enjoyed something. It was raining buckets! We weren't offered even a single cup of water from 9am to 230pm! At 230pm we stopped to eat in a place were there was just one " restaurant". So we didn't have much of a choice. The food was ok though. while we ate the van was broken into and some of the tour guide's belongings were stolen. We went to a little beach nearby while Jose went to the police station. After that we went to the bio bay. The surroundings smelled bad. The kayak tour started very well with a beautiful scenery but the main attraction was such a disappointment. In the ad picture the person is paddling and you see the glowing of the plankton. When we got there they made us line up side by side in our kayaks and put a cover on top of us. The tarp was wet and stinky. We had to squeeze our arms in between the kayaks and hit the water to see the glowing though the glass bottom of the kayak. We did that for about 10 min and left. It was high tide and we had to go against the current which for inexperienced people was very challenging and dangerous. When we came back to land around 930pm they provided some chips and water (finally after 12 hrs). All guides were very polite. But it doesn't change the fact that the tour is really bad. To me everything was a huge false ad. I lost one precious day of vacation and lots of money that I could've done something way better. Actually anything would have been better than that. **don't go**

"News Flash" You booked a Rainforest tour I'm not exactly sure what you had in mind but we delivered. Yes when Booking for our amazing El Yunque National Forest Tour its the wettest rainforest in the World and yes that means RAIN !!! And lots of it over 200 inches a year and yes we do hike down to the waterfall Note I said walk down this is because the trail is 2 miles long to the waterfall we are following the river once arriving at the waterfall for swimming and relaxation as your guide will hike uphill back to get the van as you our guests continue to follow the path through the forest to the other parking that is down the mountain from where we started this way it is much easer for you our guest and of course we provide on our vans bottle water and fresh fruit and yes we to explain about all the animals and the history of the forest. And yes we were victims of a van break in and Jose who had all his things stolen gave chase and was able to get our guests property safe and of course you can imagine how bad he felt yet we was still able to fulfill his duties and make our tour time for the amazing Biobay tour of course we are the only ones on Glass Bottom Kayaks here is the secret look down inside your kayak and there it is !!! And yes we use a giant tarp to cover all the kayakers this is how we bock out light pollution. As your tourguide and driver all of which I'm very proud of Jose and proud to have him as a employee of my company And the other 9 people on the tour with you had a great time that because they came to have fun ....... Erik Proud owner !!!

On our last trip I tried to plan a lot while I was in TX but a lot of websites were very vague and other sites, once you called no one picked up. So it was hard to get reservations planned out in advance. Thus we had to visit our concierge the very first day. He was a lot of help but all of his contacts for booking tours were all sold out for the time we would be in Puerto Rico. That is where Yelp on the fly came into play. I was still really wanting to visit the bio-luminescent bay, and our concierge suggested just driving down there and hoping to coordinate with a company. I did not want to take that risk. Lucky for me I was able to find PR Tours with Erik. Erik is very responsive via phone calls and text messages. He was able to confirm everything and put my mind at ease. Even though we had rented a car his tour was all inclusive with transportation. At first we were a bit sad, but by the time he drove down there we were glad we did not drive. It was late and we would have been very tired. My only complaint was the kayak tour itself. On this particular night they were short staffed? So Erik stayed on shore to watch our belongings. The person he teamed up with was very informative, but did not allow for us to play in the bay very much. It's like you gotta fight all the way out to the bay, then you sit in a circle for awhile where the guy tells you about the stars and science. It was interesting, but I just wanted to see the glowing! Overall, Erik was the most responsive tour person I was able to contact while in PR.

We will take pictures of you so you can focus on enjoying the moment – hands free. Our groups are kept small, so we have the chance to get to know you and with it your fears and wishes, to make sure your tour with us will offer long lasting memories and not end in disappointment. You really get what you pay for and you are supporting real families, not corporations!

We love kids

We specialize in smaller groups for safety and the best experience for our guests. For that reason families choose us be their guide, because we can ensure the safety of your family and friends. We also host tours with kids with disabilities including blindness with great success. Our safety record is outstanding, unlike the aforementioned copy cats who bring more people than they can handle, which already resulted in serious injury and even death. Not with us! Your children and your family and friends are safe with us and we keep the groups small and private.

Excellent reviews

We have more than 1500 5-star reviews all over the web and are very grateful about the warm response to what we offer. Even more amazingly, we have become friends with so many of our guests over the years and stay in contact in social media where we see our families grow and appreciate each others adventures elsewhere. We are looking forward to meet you soon and explore nature together. Book the original 🙂

My experience on this journey was like something straight out of a movie. Everything about it was amazing including our guide Chris who was such a spectacular tour guide and a great person to be around. The location itself is very beautiful and magical with several waterfalls and no mosquito to be found. There is so much adventure to have including a 100% painless natural water slide, an exhilarating leap into the beautiful waters from a high ledge, and a daring rope swing that you can’t just go on once. Although this experience can be more on the wild side it does not have to be and you can take a more laid back approach and have just as good of a time with the beautiful sights and sounds that surrounds you. I highly recommend this amazing experience and hope you can have as much fun as I did, you’ll be glad you did.

Adriana was an amazing tour guide! We had a great time hiking through the forest. Our favorite part was the natural water slide, cliff jumping, and rope swing into the water. El Yunque is beautiful, and Adriana was so helpful and explanatory during the entire trip! Definitely an experience we will never forget 🙂

I am so glad my husband & I ran into Chris from Paradise Tours in PR. We had an amazing Snorkeling experience (They made sure I was safe, and patiently thought me how to go around snorkeling and enjoyed the great sights as I can’t really swim). More than anything it was Chris’ passion & personal interest to give a tourist the whole package filled with thrill, adventure, exploring, being in complete awe by drawing you close to nature, info about must see places that made our vacation more memorable.  If you ever plan a trip to PR I strongly recommend you to contact Paradise Tours to get the experience of your life.

This is a MUST DO when you are PR! We signed up at the last minute because we had an unexpected free day and this ended up as a highlight of our trip. Jan is super fun and informative; an absolutely amazing guide! It is an adventure tour, so prepare to come home tired (and muddy!) at the end of the day. It was a great value for the experience. Even with the adventurous nature, my two middle-school-aged kids were totally capable of participating in all of the fun. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

We had the best time on this tour. Adriana was our tour guide and she was great. She told us a bunch of interesting facts about plants and wildlife at the rainforest and was just a very pleasant person to be around. Everything is as advertised, it’s really an adventurous adventure tour too. Would recommend and hopefully do it again some time!

We had Jan as our guide. He did an amazing job helping us navigate up and down the trails. He was knowledgeable of the area, did a great job answering any questions, and helped us have fun jumping, sliding and swimming in the area. He took pictures for us to help us capture our memories of the day.

This was our first time in Puerto Rico & the 2 morning we spent with Chris were the highlight of our trip. I was with my three children ages 12, 14, & 16 and we all had an absolute blast! We spent our first morning learning how to SUP for the first time. Chris was so patient and let everyone go at their own pace. He took us to a remote beach where we were able to find some beautiful conch shells to bring home with us. The second morning we spent at the rainforest relaxing in the natural pools, cliff diving, and going down natural water slides. I loved that Chris took safety very seriously and gave everyone the perfect amount of attention. This was so gorgeous and something I’ve never experienced before. We were the only people there so I loved the privacy. I don’t think we would have been able to enjoy Puerto Rico without these tours. Chris was the best! I highly recommend taking both tours and if we return to Puerto Rico Chris is on the top of my list to schedule our adventures.

We had a tour with Jan and he has incredible! Very informative, went at our pace, and gave us several options. He also took some of our favorite pictures on our entire trip! The hike itself wasn’t difficult but the terrain was a bit treacherous. Be prepared to scramble, get dirty, and wet in all the best ways (with areas to clean up of course). It’s also great to start at 8 am and have privacy before seeing tons of groups enter as we were leaving. 10/10 would recommend.

This tour was beyond AMAZING!!! I had so much fun with Chris and the other people along in our tour. I really loved how he stopped and took the time to explain to us the various plants and wild life along the way. He played a little trivia game with us along the way. It was refreshing to see someone really care about nature and want to preserve it. He also made sure we were safe at all times. He always offered his assistance to make sure we got through the trail smoothly. I absolutely recommend this tour and the tour guide to anyone who loves nature and wants to explore new things!!! After our tour he took us to a local food place; literally the best Mofongo I had the entire trip!! 10/10 would absolutely go on his tour again!!!

This was a wonderful adventure! Chris was able to spot out pieces of the rainforest that one would not originally notice. His genuine care for our safety as well as adventure on the trip was admirable. This was a nice escape from a larger crowd and has me still smiling thinking about it (8 hours later) thank you Chris!

Can’t say enough good things about Jan and Paradise Tours. This was hands down one of our favorite experiences on our vacation. The scenery was amazing, the slide and jumps/rope swing were a blast, and it was nice to learn more about Puerto Rico and the rainforest on the educational portion. Jan was extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, and put in genuine effort to ensure we had a great time. I will recommend this to anyone visiting Puerto Rico!

My family and I did the rainforest water slide tour and it was AMAZING! Our guide’s name was Jan and he was the best! He made it such a memorable experience! Don’t bother with the other companies. Paradise Tours PR is hands down the best! As we were ending our tour we saw many other companies with very large groups and it looked awful to be a part of such a large group. Thankfully our tour was small and private which made it a much more enjoyable experience!

If we could give this experience 10 stars we would! Our tour guide, Proffesor Nat's passion, knowledge and excitement for sharing the history, culture, beauty and flavors of this Island were infectious. She made our day so much fun. We felt like family. We so enjoyed all of this adventure along with many unexpected surprises and meeting local people along the way. We highly recommend this all day tour.

Made our trip here special!

Professor Nat is knowledgeable, informative, and so much fun! She is an excellent storyteller and also very friendly. Having lived in several counties she brings a culturally diverse and neutral perspective to San Juan's rich history while also sharing a wealth of European colonial history. We highly recommend this tour. It was one of the highlights of our time in San Juan. If you are visiting San Juan, you should find time to book this tour.

Nataliya was a wonderful tour guide! She was full of history and information about how PR became to be the cultural mix it is today. Her tour was informational, inspiring and most of all fun. We where a family of 4 with two teen girls and Nataliya was able to make it fun and engaging for them! Her mixture of Science, History and local knowledge of Old San Juan was enjoyed by us all. This is a great tour for families and I have no doubt she could even keep the youngest kids engaged through the tour. I highly recommend looking her up.

It really is a fun family tour.

fun tours pr

Best tour guide in Puerto Rico! Professor Natalie had a wealth of knowledge and a background from all over the world that really enriched the experience. From learning about the history of San Juan, the politics, or best bars, the experience was worth a lifetime of memories. She doesn’t say this in her profile, she’s also a wonderful photographer for those IG moments. Excited to get with her whenever we go to Puerto Rico next!

fun tours pr

Nataliya was a wonderful tour guide! She was extremely knowledgeable and shared so much valuable information with us we left feeling like we had a good understanding of the history of Puerto Rico. In addition she was so patient and kind even with our most difficult child. She kept our young children (ages 2,6, 9) engaged the entire time! She answered all of their questions, showed them many interesting things and completed many science experiments with them. I would highly recommend Nataliya to anyone traveling with young kids in Puerto Rico. She does a variety of tours to different parts of the island. We enjoyed her so much we took another one of her whole day tours a couple days after the city tour. This tour was just as awesome!

fun tours pr

If you really want to experience old San Juan, its history and culture, the best way possible is by joining Nat’s tour. She is one of friendliest people you will ever meet, with the most colorful of backgrounds and wealth of knowledge in geopolitics and philosophy. In comparison to tours we have taken around the world, in culturally rich areas, nothing compared to the amount of information that we received during professor Nat’s tour. The best espresso shot you ever had? Check. The best home made banana sangria you ever had, check? No minute wasted. If you want to share stories, go ahead. If you want to learn, just listen. Passionate, brave, kind, friendly. Sign up.

fun tours pr

Nataliya is fantastic! She had such extensive knowledge of the area and really put forth a ton of effort to make the tour as personal as possible. She took pictures of me in front of the historical monuments and even provided advice on posing, so thoughtful! She was funny and clever in her storytelling, and I really liked learning from her. By the end of the tour it felt like she could have been a relative showing me around.

fun tours pr

This tour is a MUST DO while in San Juan!!! Natalia is a superb tour guide. She brings your attention the most fascinating aspects of this island’s history. The many stops throughout the tour makes the time fly by! Especially loved the opportunities to support local businesses!

We did a wonderful walking tour of old San Juan with Profe Nat but she offers lots of different tours, all of which I am sure are amazing! Profe/Prof/Professor Nat is a wonderful tour guide with years of experience and historical knowledge! This tour has it all- history, culture, architecture, sangria, crafts and more. We really enjoyed the whole experience. Nat gave a great overview of San Juan and Puerto Rico in general but she is an expert that can tailor the tour to your specific interests. This was a great way to spend an afternoon. We were able to book last minute which was convenient as we only had a few days in the city. It was a fasinating introduction to the beautiful old town. We had a blast and would highly recommend this tour to you and your family. It is great for all ages. The process was seamless and Profe Nat is funny, professional, smart, and will take tons of photos for you, which just shows how much she will go above and beyond to make your experience memorable. 10/10, 5 Stars, A+, would definitely recommend!!!

I took a tour with Professor Nat through Northwest Puerto Rico recently. I went with my cousins and their 7 year old daughter. We had an absolute blast! Professor Nat is incredibly kind and knowledgeable about Puerto Rican culture, food, geography, not to mention what a fun and amazing educator she is for both--young and old (aka me). Our entire family was listening intently to her stories, watching her entertaining experiments, which she designed for our youngest member. She is fluent in many languages, including English, Puerto Rican Spanish, and Russian, and knows many delicious hole in the wall food places to savor the taste of PR. She has a deep understanding of Puerto Rico's economic, political, and cultural dilemmas, and she talks about it all with deepest love and appreciation for the island and its people. I highly recommend Professor Nat for any and all ages!

If you have a chance to take a tour with Prof. Nat…. Just do it. Even though I was the only person on the tour, she did not cancel. Instead she gave me a super individualized tour and showed me areas of San Juan I would not have seen if she had not taken me there. It was like a friend picked me up and showed me what they loved about the city. Oh and she brings you her homemade sangria which was amazing.

Thanks Natalia for giving my family such a wonderful tour of the island! You were so knowledgeable about Puerto Rico and thanks for discussing so many fascinating world topics. You have such an incredible encyclopedia of knowledge about plants, forest and fauna of the island. I also learnt a lot about the islands history today. WOW! What an amazing experience this tour was. I wanted something a little more kid friendly because I had my 6 year old with me and didn't want him to get bored. Nat FAR exceeded my expectations. Not only did she have an incredible amount of knowledge to share about Puerto Rico, but she is also very passionate about what she does. When we first started the tour, we hadn't had the opportunity to eat yet. Nat so graciously offered to change the route of our tour so we could stop and grab some coffee and food. Along the tour, she did an amazing job with keeping my son engaged. She had several science experiments to do with him and conveyed the history to us in a way that made it enjoyable for him as well. This was a three hour tour and not once did my kiddo want it to end. He LOVED it! And so did I. At the end of the tour we even received a sweet treat. I could honestly spend a whole day listening to all of the facts she has about the world. She is incredibly kind and genuinely wants to make your experience a good one. I HIGHLY recommend taking this tour. Even if you don't have kids with you, it was the best!!!

fun tours pr

What an incredible experience! My family including our two young kids enjoyed all of our 3+ hours with Professor Nat. Her knowledge spanned everything from history to economics, culture to geology, all delivered with a delightful sense of humor. She kept the kids engaged watching large fish in the harbor, playing with magnifying glasses and compasses, learning about the rock cycle and local geology and sea creatures in the area, and she was prepared with other material to take in whatever direction suited each child's interests. The adults were able to enjoy some relaxed time and learned about Puerto Rican history while the children were engaged. Professor Nat also introduced us to good places to pause for a coffee or a gelato, as well as a recommendation for lunch at the end of the tour. One of our favorite mornings in Old San Juan!

This south Vieques beach might not sound like much, but it's one of travelers' favorite experiences in Puerto Rico. During the day, Mosquito Bay is nothing special as Caribbean beaches go. At night, the waters emit a blue glow from organisms called dinoflagellates that live in the waters and light up when disturbed by boats, paddles or hands dipped in the water. Hundreds of thousands of bioluminescent dinoflagellates live in each gallon of bay water, and the light show put on by these tiny creatures provide is truly a (natural) wonder to behold.

Avoid visiting the bay during a full moon, since the moonlight somewhat spoils the display. Recent travelers recommended going out in a kayak to get the full effect of the glow. Some note that the bay isn't as bright as they hoped.

Old San Juan Old San Juan free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Many visitors flock to Old San Juan for nightlife, but you'll find more locals in La Placita de Santurce, a farmer's market by day that hums with music, dancing, dining, and drinking at night. – Robert Curley

Viejo San Juan is home to a variety of top attractions, including the Castillo San Felipe del Morro (a.k.a. El Morro ) and the Castillo San Cristóbal , the two centuries-old forts guarding the walled city of San Juan. Within the walls you'll find Calle del Cristo, one of Old San Juan's most popular shopping and entertainment districts, and Calle de la Fortaleza, which regularly has art dangling from above. While most visitors take advantage of seeing the historic and iconic sights, wandering the narrow streets and plazas of Old San Juan is an experience in itself. Many of the best tours in Puerto Rico include strolls through the old town's cobblestone streets to view the historic, colorful architecture and experience Puerto Rico's vibrant culture. No need to leave for lunch: Old San Juan is bursting with street vendors and restaurants ready to satiate your appetite. At night, the city comes alive and is filled with a bustling nightlife known for its drinks and Latin dancing.

El Morro (El Castillo San Felipe del Morro) El Morro (El Castillo San Felipe del Morro)

El Morro, which sits within the San Juan National Historic Site, juts out of San Juan harbor and beckons to cruise ships. Construction of the hulking, six-story fortress started in 1539. It was originally built to deter sea attacks, and went on to withstand two world wars and several other battles under the control of the Spanish and, later, the United States. Now, El Castillo San Felipe del Morro (known simply as El Morro) is Puerto Rico's go-to tourist attraction, both for its extensive history and its outstanding vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. You can also walk through the fortress' depths, which include a maze of tunnels, barracks and prison cells. Exhibitions and a park film offer a more in-depth look at the fort's history, and park rangers are stationed around the site to answer questions and lead interpretative programs. A photo in one of the fort's iconic watchtowers is the ultimate Puerto Rico selfie stop.

You'll enjoy exploring more if you wear comfortable walking shoes, as the fort is quite large: it can take up to three hours to explore the whole place on foot. Travelers tend to agree the El Morro is worth visiting whether you're a history buff or not but for a little guidance on the fort's history, consider signing up for one of the best tours in Puerto Rico .

If you really want to get away from it all, and a trip to Vieques or Culebra doesn't quite scratch that itch, consider a visit to Culebrita. Part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, the island is largely uninhabited other than by pelicans, green sea turtles and other wildlife. Daytrippers who come over from Culebra to bask on the Culebrita's half-dozen or so beaches, including the aptly named Playa Tortuga, home to nesting sea turtles. The beaches typically have clear waters and soft white sand. The island also has a number of tidal pools that are popular swimming holes for visitors who disembark from tour boats at a dock on West Beach; Turtle Beach is about a 15-minute walk from the boat dock.

On the island of Culebra, which sits about 20 miles east of Puerto Rico, visitors will find a beach perfect for families, snorkelers and those looking for a remote spot that boasts a delightful aesthetic from nearly every angle. Flamenco Beach's 1-1/2-mile strip of sand is the most popular on Culebra and is often recognized by travelers and experts as the most beautiful in all of Puerto Rico.

Facilities like bathrooms and showers can be found on-site, and the beach's white sand is peppered with kiosks selling refreshments or offering chairs and umbrellas for rent (about $10 each). Amenities and tranquility are part of the allure of Flamenco Beach, but above all else, travelers simply can't stop raving about the beach's beauty. Some travelers do complain that Flamenco Beach's popularity means it can get a bit crowded on the weekends (despite a lack of upscale resorts or restaurants).  One unusual highlight of the beach is several rusting battle tank hulks in the surf — a reminder that Culebra was once a bombing range for the U.S. military.

In addition to walking through the cave, visitors can explore the cliffs and beach. The caves have appeared as a location for several movies and TV shows, such as the miniseries "Treasure Island" (2012).

The El Yunque National Forest, or simply El Yunque, is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. It's also a particular favorite for vacationers who like to hike, but even if nature really isn't your thing, travelers urge you to make the trip about 30 miles east of San Juan.

Remember to wear layers that can get wet (the highest elevations can receive up to 200 inches of rainfall annually) and pack a water-resistant camera to capture some of the area's splendor. In the evenings, Puerto Rico's tiny coquí tree frogs begin their unmistakable serenade.

Castillo San Cristóbal Castillo San Cristóbal

Spanning 27 acres, Castillo San Cristóbal was built to protect Old San Juan from land attacks. It doesn't receive as many visitors or as much adoration as its sister fortification, El Morro , but visitors are typically just as amazed by the majesty and significant history of the site. Allow several hours to visit both sites.

The forts' stellar shoreline views (not to mention the occasional iguana) draw travelers to the sprawling site. Though the fort tends to draw crowds (especially cruise ship passengers), recent visitors said that due to the sheer size of the complex touring San Cristóbal never feels cramped.

Calle del Cristo Calle del Cristo free

Shoppers should come to Old San Juan prepared to let go of a few dollars. The city's Calle del Cristo is a haven of restaurants, art galleries and boutiques. In addition to popular stores, those walking the street can discover local crafts and artisan shops.

If you're looking to skip shopping altogether, Calle del Cristo is still a worthwhile spot to get a feel for the beauty of Old San Juan. Past travelers routinely praised the churches and centuries-old colonial residences and commercial buildings that line the cobblestone streets.

Camuy River Cave Park Camuy River Cave Park

The Camuy River flows through the third largest cave system in the world — so extensive, in fact, that it underlies parts of three towns: Camuy, Hatillo, and Lares. Accessible via the main entrance in Camuy, the small fraction of the caves open to the public can be explored on guided walking tours offered by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, which manages the nearly 300-acre Camuy River Cave Park. Highlights of the tour include the largest stalagmite in Puerto Rico, glimpses of the underground river (and maybe some bats), and a 450-foot deep sinkhole that allows light from the surface to penetrate the cave.

Daily visitors are limited at the cave, so make reservations in advance; day-of tickets are limited. A number of visitors complained about being turned away from the cave because tours were at full capacity. Also, while many praised the beauty of the caves, others noted that the experience requires a great deal of walking, including up some steep hills. Finally, note that the Camuy River Cave Park may be a bit more rugged than some other "show caves" you may have visited. That said, make sure you wear closed-toed shoes.

Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico

Located in the bustling Santurce neighborhood of San Juan, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico houses more than 1,000 works of art created by Puerto Ricans. The collection showcases pieces that date back to the 1600s and includes sculptures, photographs, paintings, drawings and more. The 24 exhibition galleries are housed across two wings. The west wing is a neoclassical building designed in the 1920s, while the east wing is a modern structure designed by Puerto Rican architects. The east wing also features a stained-glass piece by Eric Tabales called Taíno Sun Rising.

Visitors rave about the museum and say that its exhibits helped them better understand the island's history and culture, with an impressive collection despite its relatively compact size.

Condado Beach Condado Beach free

If you're staying in San Juan and want to stretch on the sands, you won't need to venture farther than Condado Beach. For many sun-lovers, that's just fine. Condado is framed by a string of high-rise hotels and resort complexes, plus it's ground zero for water sports and beach bars. Families, however, sometimes forego these sands for one of the government-run beaches, or balnearios — notably Playita del Condado — because Condado beach's tide is often too strong for young swimmers.

According to past travelers, you won't be disappointed with Condado, as long as you recognize it's not a remote strip of sand, but rather a beach that sits alongside a bustling city. But its proximity to so many hotels and resorts makes it all the more tourist-friendly.

Carolina Beach (Balneario de Carolina) Carolina Beach (Balneario de Carolina) free

Located near the Isla Verde resort district in the metro area, lengthy Carolina Beach is a popular public beach among both visitors and locals. Families especially love its white sand, warm water, the on-duty lifeguard and on-site paramedics. What they're not so thrilled with are the crowds. The beach tends to get busy during the weekends, but you can avoid crowds to some extent by visiting during the week.

There are plenty of vendors nearby selling food and renting water sports equipment. The beach has a volleyball court and a playground for children. It also has a team dedicated to helping wheelchair users, though this service is available Monday through Friday only and must be requested in advance . Another minor drawback is that Carolina Beach's proximity to the airport means you may hear a bit of loud noise from airplanes overhead.

Cayo Icacos Cayo Icacos free

The Reserva Natural Cayos de la Cordillera is a national park that protects the Cordillera Cays, a series of small, uninhabited islands off the east coast of Puerto Rico. Cayo Icacos, aka Icacos Island, is one of the most popular islands thanks to its location just a mile and a half off the mainland coast and its exceptional beaches.

Most visitors come to swim or snorkel for the day — overnight visits are prohibited — and the island's location close to Fajardo makes access easy. For a fee of about $60, water taxis take visitors from Fajardo's Las Croabas neighborhood on the short trip over to Cayo Icacos, making multiple round trips daily from early morning to late afternoon. The island is also a popular stop for charter catamarans doing snorkeling trips. The latter typically supply all you'll need for a fun day on Cayo Icacos, but if you go the water taxi route be sure to bring cash for payment as well as beach necessities (blankets, sunscreen, water and more) since there are no facilities on the island – and that includes restrooms.

Crash Boat Beach Crash Boat Beach free

Despite its name, you won't need to worry about sinking ships at this beach in Aguadilla. Snorkelers regularly trek to Crash Boat Beach for its clear waters and multitude of fish. The beach and its pier are also beloved by sunbathers, fishermen, volleyball players, scuba divers and daredevils who love to jump into the water from the pier. After a day in the sun, stop by one of the area's many food kiosks to refuel or take a short drive to one of Aguadilla's restaurants.

It's no wonder this western beach is one of Aguadilla's most popular spots for travelers of all ages. Repeat visitors said the beach is smaller after Hurricane Maria, but tourists loved the beach's turquoise waters and ample activities. The near-constant crowds don't seem to bother many travelers, but if you're looking for a quiet environment this may not be the beach for you.

San Germán San Germán free

Puerto Rico's second oldest city is a miniature Old San Juan in the sense that it has street after colorful street of historic colonial-era buildings dating back to the 16th century. Highlights of the historic district include the Porta Coeli, a convent and church dating to 1609 that's now a museum of religious art — one of many art and history museums in the city — and the Iglesia San Germán de Auxerre, consecrated in 1688. The Museo de Arte Religioso Porta Coeli is open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Because it's located in the mountains and not on the coast, San Germán sometimes gets overlooked by visitors seeking fun in Puerto Rico's Caribbean sun. But the city once rivaled San Juan in importance as the seat of government for the western half of the island. Visitors can experience local culture at the Fiestas Patronales de San German Auxerre, a July festival celebrating the city's patron saint.

Observatorio de Arecibo Observatorio de Arecibo

The Arecibo Observatory has a rich history. Scientists used the site's massive telescope to collect data about Earth's atmosphere, the solar system's planets, comets and more since its debut in the 1960s. Though Puerto Rico may seem like an odd place for this important device, it was the perfect location. Situated near the equator, the telescope was in the ideal spot not only to study the Earth's ionosphere (its original purpose) but also to study planets. In addition, Puerto Rico could accommodate the space needed for the telescope's reflecting mirror: The dish is 1,000 feet in diameter and 167 feet deep.

In 2020, cables holding the central platform broke and the platform collapsed into the dish, damaging the dish. In 2022, the National Science Foundation announced it plans to open a STEM research facility on-site but funding would not include rebuilding the telescope.

Piñones Piñones free

Afro-Caribbean culture and cuisine draw visitors to Piñones, a small community within the town of Loiza. Settled by formerly enslaved people from the African Yoruba tribe in the 16th century, Loiza is famous for its Festival of St. James, with parades featuring dancers wearing traditional vejigantes masks made from coconuts. But even if you can't make it in July, Piñones makes a great lunch stop on the way to El Yunque , Loquillo or Fajardo. Visitors come to sample frituras like green banana and taro root fritters, seafood pancakes called b acalaí tos and other local food at hundreds of food stands in the seaside community.

Piñones isn't just about food: it's a center for a cherished part of Puerto Rican culture called chinchorreo , gathering where friends and family meet for food, drink and dancing. Loiza lacks the big resorts that are typical elsewhere in this part of Puerto Rico, and it's no accident: locals are fiercely protective of their culture and low-key community life.

The park also features recreated bohios , thatched-roof homes typical of those built by the Taínos.

The Caguana ball courts, where the traditional game of batey was played, have been designated a National Historic Landmark. The game, played with a rubber ball, was similar to soccer in that all parts of the body other than the hands could be used. Games were also culturally significant in that the games helped Taínos resolve disputes and make important decisions.

Puerto Rico’s Best Day Trips

The unique thing about the island of Puerto Rico is that it is one of the most unique island terrains in the Caribbean . There’s beautiful white sand beaches, a tropical rain forest and even bioluminescent bays.. so if you love adventure or scenic views, you definitely will want to make the effort to explore more of the island!

Here are 6 of Puerto Rico’s best day trips.

fun tours pr

1. Culebra Day Tour

Culebra is one of Puerto Rico’s best day trips. The small group of islands is located off Puerto Rico’s east coast with white sand, turquoise waters and tree covered hills.

Each small island offers something different – from sea turtles and manta rays at Tamarindo to dramatic sunsets at Punta Melones. We went to Culebrita which has a cute lighthouse, some deceptively strong waves and beautiful blue skies for days.

The catamaran ride was led by a group of fun local hosts, who kept us well fed and hydrated all day with rum punches! If you love the water, this is the one day trip from Puerto Rico you can’t miss.

2. San Juan Snorkel & Picnic

The best way to live the island life? On a boat of course!

This fun catamaran cruise takes you to Icacos island for a full day of sun, swimming and relaxing. Snorkel gear is provided so you can see Puerto Rico’s beautiful underwater marine life! The best part? Unlimited rum punch and pina coladas.

The tour handles all transportation, including hotel pick up and drop off, as well as a buffet lunch.

3. El Yunque Rainforest

Puerto Rico is one of the most unique islands in the Caribbean, as it has both beaches and a rain forest to offer!

From San Juan, this half day tour takes you to the United States’ only tropical rain forest where you can explore nature trails, get up close and personal to a scenic waterfall and learn about the area’s unique biology.

Bring your camera! The leafy nature reserve has beautiful wildflowers, orchids and panoramic views. The guided tour includes hotel pick up and drop off, a knowledgeable guide and park fees.

4. Bacardi Tasting Tour

We visited the Bacardi factory the morning after a late night trying local Puerto Rican rums… so maybe we should have planned out our schedule a little better. First we received a drink ticket and had the opportunity to drink a fun rum-based cocktail before the tour started.

Then we headed indoors for a short look at the rum barreling process and production. It was a brief guided visit but the real highlight comes after – rum tasting time ! We’re not big rum drinkers but were glad that we upgraded for the tour + tasting ticket because this was such a treat.

You enter a conference like room where 5 rums are set out. A guide walks you through the notes of each tasting rum and goes in-depth into the different ages, barrels and flavors that develop to form distinct rums.

5. Vieques Bioluminescent Bay

Bioluminescent bays are seriously cool. There are only 5 in the world and a whopping 3 of them can be found in Puerto Rico!

What is a bioluminescent bay you ask? A bioluminescent bay is one that seems to glow with eerie blue-green light. When the Spanish first colonized Puerto Rico, they controlled the Vieques islands and thought the light emissions were a sign of demonic influence. I guess I would too if I didn’t know the science!

What makes bioluminescent bays glow? Essentially these watery lagoons are home to micro-organisms called dinoflagellates, who produce their own food through photosynthesis. The chemical reaction of photosynthesis emits light as a by product and so the bay glows with eerie light!

The Spanish tried to siphon off the evil from reaching the ocean by blocking up the islands with huge rocks. Funnily enough, blockages had the opposite effect by creating a bay and allowing the little dinoflagellates to breed more effectively – so we have the Spanish to thank for Puerto Rico’s magnificent bioluminescent bays !

Bioluminescent bays typically have lots of mangrove trees, which are a source of vitamin B12 and help the dinoflagallates survive. If you want to see the bay at its peak glow, visit right after a rainstorm. Mangroves release a large amount of B12 after rainfall, which agitates the micro organisms and causes them to produce a stronger blue glow. Day trips to Vieques are one of the best things to do in Puerto Rico!

6. Rio Camuy Cave Park

We didn’t have time for this tour but heard about it from friends we made on our day trip to Culebra, since they raved about it nonstop!

From eerie interiors to unexplained sinkholes, stalactites and stalagmites, Rio Camuy is one of the earth’s oldest and most unique cave systems. You can tour the Camuy caves on a full day trip. These caves are over a million years old!

It also includes a stop at the world’s largest radio telescope , a giant concrete bowl wedged in Puerto Rico’s northern coastline.

Visiting Puerto Rico – Travel Checklist

Many U.S. airlines offer daily, direct flights from select US cities. We flew Jet Blue from New York City's JFK airport. Puerto Rico is offering cheap flights to encourage visitors to the island – you can set an alert  flight deals here .

Traveling to Puerto Rico as an American citizen is incredibly convenient. All you need is your license, no passport required, as the island is a U.S. territory. Likewise, no need to bring a travel adapter, exchange currency or purchase a SIM card. American phones, dollars and plugs work just fine throughout the island.

As a result of Hurricane Maria, life in Puerto Rico has changed. We visited in mid January 2018 and found that electricity was up and running throughout the capital of San Juan. Select hotels and restaurants are open; we've listed the hotels we visited and used here . Check here for great deals on accommodation .

Lastly, be sure to visit Puerto Rico with  travel insurance . Whether you get injured and need to be hospitalized, your phone gets stolen, or a flight delay leaves you with nothing but the clothes on your back, travel insurance will help when you need it most. Get a quote for your trip here .

10 Super Fun + Adventurous Things to do in Puerto Rico

Site under maintenance, please excuse our appearance.

This article’s recommendations may include affiliate links.

Visiting Puerto Rico and want to plan some unique and adventurous activities on the island? I have a few awesome recommendations to share for fun things to do in Puerto Rico. This list includes outdoor activities, local cultural experiences, and delicious food finds.

Whether you’re Boricua from the mainland and want to reconnect with the island, or vacationing in PR and want a list of unique things to do in Puerto Rico beyond San Juan – read on for adventurous suggestions!

el yunque visitor center elevated boardwalk trail in forest

Disclosure: I tried some of these things to do in Puerto Rico for free while at a conference on the island; others I paid for myself. All opinions are my own and I was not required or paid to include any of them.

Drive Your Own Mini-Speed Boat To Icacos

When you think of visiting an island I’m sure boating is on your mind, but have you ever considered driving your own mini speed boat? That’s exactly what me and the girls did when we were in Fajardo (Puerto Rico’s east region). It is high on my list of recommended things to do in Puerto Rico.

We used PR tour company Kayaking Puerto Rico to try the mini speed boat adventure to Icacos Island. This island is known for its pristine beaches. It is a common stop for boats and catamarans and was so much fun!

I hate driving, so I opted to be the navigator on this speedboat ride. However, they do give a tutorial if you want to drive yourself. A tour guide comes with you in their own boat to lead the way. Included with the tour fee is a jug of water in each boat, and a life jacket.

Beyond that, be sure to bring a dry bag and phone pouch because you will get soaked from the waves! There are changing rooms at the check-in spot if you want to bring an extra dry pair of clothing.

Pro tip: Waterproof supplies to bring on your boat tour

  • Large dry bag
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Waterproof fanny pack with phone pouch combo

Explore The Bioluminescent Bay

If you’ve never experienced the awe-inspiring blue ocean glow that is bioluminescence, then you’re in for a treat. It is truly a magical experience. Plus you can only find it in select areas around the world (and it’s best seen under the perfect conditions of the moon phases.)

Bioluminescense is light emitted by living organisms, like plankton. The best time to see it is around the New Moon, when the sky is darkest, which allows for the water to really illuminate. The brighter the moon, the more difficult it is to see the water glow – you don’t want that.

If you want to experience Puerto Rico’s bioluminescence yourself, there are three main places to choose from. They are Laguna Bay in Fajardo, La Parguera in the south region, and Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques.

Since a lot of adventure things to do in Puerto Rico are near Fajardo in the East Region, I’d recommend trying a kayaking tour in Laguna Bay. This tour with Island Journeys has a Rainforest & Bioluminescence tour worth trying.

If you really want to see Vieques’ famous wild horses, I recommend this bioluminescent bay boat tour . Then pair a visit to that island with a horseback riding tour.

Visit El Yunque National Forest

Did you know there are actual rainforests in North America? Places like Hawaii, Pacific Northwest, and Puerto Rico have lush green rainforests that appear straight from a fairytale storybook. It is magical.

What’s even cooler about Puerto Rico is the fact that its rainforest, El Yunque National Forest is the only rainforest part of the United States National Forest system.

If you choose not to do the adventurous Puerto Rico activities and tours available in El Yunque, you can explore their extensive visitor center at El Portal instead. It is equipped with interactive exhibits, a pristine walking path, and even resident birds. Or put on your hiking hat and enjoy miles and miles of trails that weave through the forest. There are also beautiful waterfalls and overlooks too.

  • Travel tip for El Yunque: if you rent a car, know that El Yunque National Forest requires reservations to manage crowds. The vehicle reservation covers one vehicle and should be made in advance.

Take A Surf Class In Rincon

Of course, the beach is one of the most popular things to do in Puerto Rico, but did you know it is also a hot surf destination?

The west side of Puerto Rico is known for being super laid back and having great surf opportunities. If your idea of an island adventure includes barrels and sick breaks, Rincon is the spot for you. Rincon is the best place for experienced surfing in Puerto Rico, and there are a few places for stellar breaks.

Pro tip: According to The Surf Atlas, here are some of the best spots (read their whole guide here ):

  • Antonio’s
  • Sandy Beach East
  • Pool’s Beach
  • Punta Higuero

If you’re a beginner wanting a taste of Puerto Rico’s surf scene, there are plenty of tours to join too. Some are in Rincon, but since you won’t need as challenging of waves, there are plenty of beaches to enjoy. Here is a list of the top surfing lessons in Puerto Rico .

Take A Bomba Dancing Class

Bomba is the heart of the Puerto Rican people. Have you heard of it? Rooted in our African ancestry, Bomba music and the traditional Bomba dance were created by enslaved Africans using the rum barrels from the Spaniards.

The dancer guides the rhythm of the drum while another drum keeps the tempo. It is a fascinating and important part of Puerto Rican history and culture. You can learn to dance it too!

At some point during your Puerto Rico itinerary , head to Loiza in the east region for a unique Bomba adventure. Right on the beach, Taller N’Zambi is the company we used to learn traditional Bomba dance and it was so much fun! Paired with costumes and live drummers, we were taught some of the basic Bomba moves and their significance.

This experience is one of the most essential things to do in Puerto Rico if you want something totally unique and immersive with the land and its people. Message Sheila on Instagram if you want to arrange a visit.

Visit Wild Horses On Vieques

The island of Vieques is one of the most magical places on earth. You can see wild horses there too (but please remember, emphasis on “wild” – so be mindful of your distance and pay attention to your surroundings).

These Paso Fino horses technically have owners but can roam freely. They trot along the beaches and fields, offering a serene landscape view for your visit. If you want to go horseback riding here, I suggest contacting an outfitter: here is a list of the most popular Vieques horseback riding tours .

  • Travel tip: if you visit Vieques from la isla, I recommend planning ahead. The best way to get there is by plane to Vieques from San Juan International Airport (SJU) or the local Isla Grande airport. Seats and schedules are limited. You can also get the ferry to Vieques from Ceiba . It is south of Fajardo, but note: cars aren’t allowed on the ferry.
  • Warning: while this is one of the most bucket list things to do in Puerto Rico, it is important to keep a safe distance from the horses.

Eat Frituras From Kioskos

While you are in the east region, you’ll definitely hear terms thrown around like “Frituras” and “Kioskos”. Frituras are the fried street foods in Puerto Rico – and some of my favorite foods! While some restaurants may serve a fritura here and there, I feel you’re really not going to get the core of it unless you’re in the East.

Frituras are full of meat or fish, and use tons of butter – so fair warning to vegans. If you want to try them, I recommend tostones (fried green plantain), alcapurria (most often comes with ground beef inside), pastelillos (might be called empanadas in some spots and can be filled with pork, chicken, beef, or fish), and bacalaitos (made with cod fish).

Kioskos are the food stands along the road where you buy frituras. However, if you are dining in the East, you’ll also see plenty of them listed as sides and appetizers too. They are even in fancier restaurants.

Swim In Natural Rivers And Pools

Puerto Rico has more than just pristine turquoise beaches – there are serene rivers and pools throughout the island too. If you want to explore some of the freshwater locales on the island, book a tour to help you find the best spots.

I’ve used the local, family-owned tour company called Bespoke Lifestyle Management for tours in the east region. They’re the experts when it comes to knowing about local things to do in Puerto Rico, and they provide some great off-the-beaten-path rainforest and waterfall tours. Here is one tour that’s more focused on waterfalls and natural waterslides for a freshwater adventure.

Go Ziplining In The Rainforest

Ziplining is a common adventure activity in many different destinations, but how many of those places let you soar through a tropical rainforest on an island!? I highly recommend trying ziplining in El Yunque, which is very beginner-friendly.

I did a tour with Rainforest Zipline . It has a concentrated course where you climb ladders and stairs to get to the eight different lines. This particular company also has an adventure trail you can try too, which includes a suspension bridge, Tarzan swing, and more.

  • Travel tip: there is a weight limit for ziplining – this company’s limit is 250lbs. This isn’t a good fit for anyone afraid of heights. Also, you should feel comfortable climbing ladders and walking 10 minutes uphill.

Go ATV Riding

ATV riding is all about exploring a destination’s natural wonders and diverse terrain in a thrilling way. Adventurous travelers love it and seek it out – especially with group travel! Puerto Rico is the perfect setting for that. There are a number of reputable tour companies and spectacular scenery to go with it.

Recently my husband and his friends used Carabali for their ATV adventure in Puerto Rico. They explored the foothills of El Yunque on 600cc ATVs for their 2-hour adventure. This experience included a stop in the Mameyes River.

  • Travel tip: bring your license on this tour, otherwise you can’t drive and will have to ride on the back of someone’s ATV. They were firm with this rule.

Which Things to do in Puerto Rico Will You Try First?

These fun things to do in Puerto Rico are sure to make your island adventure one to remember. If you can’t do them all, I’d recommend heading east. A lot of the activities in this list can be enjoyed near El Yunque Rainforest, Luqillo, and Fajardo. Either way, Puerto Rico is always awaiting your next visit so you may have to save some adventures for next time!

Comparing attractions: which one is right for you.

When thinking about the best places for Puerto Rico families, you should consider things like age-appropriate activities, safety and security, comforts, and costs.

As a tourist who loves to try new things and see new places, my recent trip to Puerto Rico was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me.

While I was there, I was able to go to the JungleQui Zipline Park.

I loved the rush of energy as I flew through the bush.

Everyone could find something they liked at the park because the trails were of different lengths and difficulty levels.

My next stop was the El Yunque National Forest.

Even though it was hard to get to the top of El Yunque, the view of the trees and mountains from there was worth it.

I also liked swimming in a waterfall because it was cool and exciting.

To Jet swim with turtles was a once-in-a-lifetime thing to do.

The water was so clear that you could see all kinds of fish and turtles.

It was fun, and I’ll never forget how close I got to the turtles.

Want to enjoy something more peaceful and beautiful?

Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve had different kinds of places to live.

The bioluminescent bay was an excellent choice for El Yunque National Forest because it was beautiful and had amazing shining animals.

My time in Puerto Rico was fantastic; I loved the island’s peaceful and gorgeous scenery.

Did you find some fun things to do in Puerto Rico with kids?

Well, I hope this list was a big help for you.

When planning a family trip, it’s important to think about both the good things and the bad things.

The first time I went ziplining at JungleQui Zipline Park, I felt like I was flying through a beautiful jungle.

Even though there are safety rules, ziplining can be expensive, especially for groups or families.

The next thing on my list is El Yunque National Forest, a gorgeous place for people who love nature.

As soon as I entered the forest, I was blown away by the beautiful views and lush greenery all around me.

El Yunque National Forest is a great place to see wildlife, but it can be hard to get to during busy times, and the weather is hard to predict.

Go to the Jet Snorkel for a once-in-a-lifetime diving adventure.

The most amazing part of my experience was swimming with friendly sea turtles, which are known for being calm and moving elegantly.

The bioluminescent bay is one of the highlights of my tour at Las Cabezas de San Juan.

There, tiny creatures light up the water at night, giving it a beautiful blue-green glow you can’t see anywhere else.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance you won’t want to miss.

Even though Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve is beautiful, it might not be for everyone because it is hard to get to and depends on the weather.

Still, these places of interest let visitors enjoy the natural beauty of Puerto Rico while doing fun things.

I know what you’re thinking.

Let me guess.

You’re wondering what’s My top pick, right?

My top choice is JungleQui Zipline Park.
