About Sri Trang

Company information.

Sri Trang Bus Company operates buses to a range of domestic destinations around Thailand . The main bus station is in Hat Yai and most of the routes run between Hat Yai and other locations. Some also leave from Phuket and Trang. Buses are spacious although there may be some differences between the conditions of the buses used for different routes.

Buses are large and are classified as ‘Express Buses’. There is also an option to upgrade to VIP seating which has extra legroom and a front row seat on some of the buses. On longer journeys passengers are provided with snacks such as cakes as well as blankets and water.

Routes served by Sri Trang

Sri Trang operates a variety of routes around Thailand but is a domestic carrier and does not run any international routes at this time.

Phuket–Hat Yai

Buses from Phuket to Hat Yai depart at 6 am, 7.30 am, 8 am, 8.30 am, 9.30 am, 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 7.30 pm, 8 pm, 9.30 pm, and 9.45 pm. The journey takes 8 hours and tickets cost between THB350 and THB500 depending on the time and class chosen. Note that the 9.45 pm bus is a VIP bus and only VIP tickets at THB500 are available.

This route is a popular way to get closer to the border with Malaysia if you are planning the onward journey via Sadao or Padang Besar crossing further south to Butterworth or Giorgetown in Penang.

Hat Yai–Phuket

[From Hat Yai to Phuket], Sri Trang also offers a number of departures throughout the day at 8 am, 9.30 am, 10.30 am, 11.45 am, 1 pm, 6 pm, 7.30 pm, and 9.30 pm with the journey taking between 7 and 8 hours. Tickets cost the same as in opposite direction – from THB350 to THB500. Passengers should note that the 7.30 pm bus is the VIP Bus and only VIP tickets for THB500 are sold on this route.

Hat Yai–Trang

Another popular route connects the Deep South with just another destination on the Andaman Coast. Buses from Hat Yai to Trang leave at 8 am, 9.30 am, 10.30 am, 11.45 am, 1 pm, 6 pm, and 9.30 pm. The journey takes just over 2 hours and tickets cost THB250. There is no dedicated VIP bus on this route. The route is handy if your next destination is the Trang islands, including Koh Libong or Koh Ngai.

One of the pros of travelling with Sri Trang is that it is a cheap and easy way of travelling around Thailand, particularly if you are in the Hat Yai area and want to visit southern Thailand.

Sri Trang buses are spacious and have a lot of legroom and reclining seats . If you are travelling on the longer journeys this means you can sleep on the buses.

Buses are serviced by a local bus attendant to help passengers with anything they may need.

There is the option to upgrade your seat or choose a dedicated VIP bus if you want extra comfort.

Some buses have toilets although this is not always guaranteed and the toilet may be locked. This means that you will have to wait for the rest stops if you need to use the bathroom.

If you take a bus that leaves at night you may find that you arrive early in the morning at your destination and may need to plan accordingly if you want to check into a hotel or travel on to another destination.

Keep in mind

Passengers are provided with snacks and some buses on longer routes stop at local cafes along the way. You may however want to bring your own food and drinks, particularly if you have a special diet.

Tickets can be bought on the spot but it is recommended that you book in advance as buses can be full and you will have to wait for the next one.

Travellers reviews Some buses are advertised as being equipped with Wi-Fi although passengers have reported that this is not always the case. As such plan ahead as you may not be able to access internet on the bus.

There have been reports of buses arriving earlier in their destinations than reported. If you take an overnight bus this may mean that you arrive in the early hours of the morning at around 3 or 4 am so it’s a good idea to plan ahead for when you reach your destination.

The scenic bus ride from Phuket to Krabi: A traveler review

Find the ride you need in.

Got the jab? If so, you can start planning your Thailand trip. Phuket is getting ready to reopen for quarantine-free travel in July.

Krabi roads

“Pai nai,” (Where are you going?) asked a desperate ticket seller the moment I entered Phuket’s bus terminal 2.

“To Krabi ,” I replied.

By “go now,” she must’ve meant, “Come with us; we’re leaving now.” Since I already had a booking that I’d made online in a few clicks, I told her I didn’t need a ticket.

“What’s your name?” asked the other woman who was waiting for travelers at the entrance in a more courteous way. I said my name and added, “Bookaway,” but had the impression she didn’t even need that info.

I was about to travel from Phuket to Krabi because I needed a change of scene. Krabi is only a three-hour bus ride away from Thailand’s largest island and came right on cue. With its Thung Teao Forest Natural Park and rich-tinted Emerald Pool , this area of outstanding natural beauty never fails to appeal to you.

Now that I’d found an employee of the tour operator, I was ready to ride Sri Trang Tour ’s bus from Phuket to Krabi. Let me tell you what it was like.

  • Checking in at Phuket’s bus terminal 2
Pro tip: If you’re coming back to Phuket and have a motorbike, why not ride your scooter to the bus station and park it here? They’ve got a supervised motorcycle parking area, and it’s damn cheap at about 20 baht ($0.64) per day (don’t remember the exact price, but it was quite affordable!).

sri trang tour

I followed Sri Trang Tour’s staff member to the check-in desk, and in less than 20 seconds, she handed me my ticket without asking for my passport. “Platform 7,” she said and pointed to where that platform was. “It’s a blue bus,” she added.

sri trang tour

It now occurred to me that my temperature had already been taken automatically by some scanning camera upon entering the building.

sri trang tour

The waiting hall features a large, smelly toilet and a kiosk, but I didn’t see any open snack shops. Thankfully, I still had half an hour to kill and stuffed my face at one of the restaurants just next to the departure hall. The departure announcements in Thai didn’t worry me; I knew I was not at risk of missing my bus.

sri trang tour

There weren’t many travelers around, but noticeably more than on my last trip starting from here . I was in a jovial and optimistic mood today, which was partly because the skies were blue. There was lots of sunlight and it was hot. It felt as though I could see the light of this corona-tunnel.

  • Riding the bus to Krabi

Bus drivers were sleeping in the shade on benches, but I didn’t need their help, and neither will you. There are numbered screens above each platform; you can’t miss it.

sri trang tour

“What’s your seat?” asked the driver when I got on the coach. I told him 1A and produced my ticket. This guy then removed his clothes and other stuff from my seat and motioned for me to sit down.

If you’ve got bulky baggage, you can store it in the bus’s luggage compartment. The overhead only has space for small backpacks. There’s a lavatory on the bus, but I recommend you relieve yourself before departure and during the short stops along the way. I paid dearly later on when I went to take a leak. The reek of stale piss was appalling; I barely managed to endure that half minute in that anti-restroom.

At 11:30 am on the dot, I heard clicking sounds of the indicator, the start of the engine, and then we left as scheduled. People were quiet. Everyone. There were 17 travelers, all locals but me. I drew the curtain that came in handy, sat back in my comfy pleather seat and looked forward to a pleasant ride.

sri trang tour

The ancient gogglebox had probably stopped working a long time ago. Instead, a sign stuck on the TV’s black screen indicated that passengers would be fined 5,000 baht for not fastening the seatbelt. Just a pity that my seat didn’t come with a seatbelt.

“Pai nai, kaaa?” (Where are you going?) the hostess asked a guy who got on the bus somewhere along the way towards the mainland, then slammed the door shut.

15 kilometers from Phuket’s airport in the Thalang area, Wat Phra Nang Sang caught my eye with its intricate ornaments. This more than 500-year-old temple is Phuket’s oldest one and is surrounded by statues of various origins. I couldn’t take a proper look as we only passed by, obviously, but the temple’s boundaries look as though they’ve been adorned with gilded holy snakes. In the background beckons a Buddhist stupa with a metallic covering painted in gold, and to the temple’s left sits a white Buddhist stupa, shaped not unlike Bangkok’s iconic temple Wat Arun, just a lot smaller in size.

sri trang tour

Further into our trip, roadside stalls sold pineapples that must’ve been exceptionally sweet. The sight of those Queen Group-pineapples tantalized my taste buds. I’d tried them before many times and had never been disappointed. They’re smaller in size and have a thicker, orange-hued skin and are sweeter and crunchier than the pineapple you’re used to. It’s popular for fresh consumption in Southern Thailand ; you’ll see those roadside stalls time and again.

Crossing Sarasin bridge that links Phuket to the mainland at 12:25 pm, I marveled at panorama views of green-tinted waters and light-colored sands that are flanked by casuarinas.

sri trang tour

Meanwhile, I started to sweat despite the AC’s cool stream of air. It needed improvement; it simply wasn’t cool enough. Just five minutes later, the driver collected some more locals from a bus station in Phang-Nga, not far from the Sarasin bridge.

sri trang tour

The next stop was at 1:05 pm at a bus terminal in Phang-Nga. Nobody got on or off the coach, but the driver waited for a few minutes. People could’ve gone to the loo had they wanted to. Ten minutes further into our trip, the first people got off the bus in the middle of nowhere.

The journey from Sarasin bridge to Krabi takes you from endless plains and palm and rubber tree forests to gigantic, jungle-swathed limestone rocks. They tower behind shacks and tin huts on stilts that intermingle with golden dome mosques, jewel-encrusted temples and religious sculptures, painted in gold.

sri trang tour

The driver pulled into Krabi’s bus terminal at 2:27 pm, and the moment I got off the coach, some taxi tout accosted me. I walked away because these guys who are waiting for you to get off the bus are usually the ones that rip you off.

sri trang tour

He followed me, but when I approached the motorcycle taxi drivers with their bright-orange vests, he gave up. “Mee haa-sib baeht, dai mai kap?” (I’ve got 58 (baht) left, is that okay?) I asked. The guys laughed and nodded.

sri trang tour

Driving through Krabi town, I was staggered by cavemen and elephant traffic lights and couldn’t help taking pictures. The city alone epitomized the change of scene I’d been looking for.

Thailand Life

Travel and culture in thailand, hat yai bus station.

Hat Yai bus station is large and busy. Hat Yai is the largest city in Southern Thailand and it is the major transport hub for connections from Bangkok to locations in the Southern provinces and onto Malaysia and Singapore.

Bus and Minivan Services

Intercity buses, as well as minivans, depart from and arrive at this station throughout the day and night. Beyond the perimeter walls of the bus station there are also many private travel agencies offering private bus and minivan tours to a wide range of locations. Sometimes these agents offer a more convenient or more comfortable journey, but rarely do they charge less than companies operating out of the bus station.

Hat Yai Bus Station

  • Thailand Life Tip: For the best value for money (with the exception of bus journeys to Penang and Kuala Lumpur  always catch the bus or minivan from the main bus station as it will be cheaper.

Travel to Hat Yai Bus Station

Hat Yai Bus Station is 2.9 km away from Hat Yai train station and the three main streets in the centre of Hat Yai city (Niphat Uthit Soi 1, 2 and 3) where most of the hotels in Hat Yai are clustered. To get from the central area of Hat Yai from the bus station your best option is to take a motorbike taxi or a taxi van. Motorbike taxis and local blue taxi vans charge from 40 THB to 60 THB for travel between the city centre area near the train station and the bus station.

Bus Station to City Centre

Immediately in front of the bus station on the same street as the private travel agents there are always motorbike taxis and small blue taxi vans waiting to take passengers into the city.

Motorbike taxis and tuks outside Hat Yai Bus Station

It takes about 30 minutes to walk from the bus station to the train station, but be aware it is very easy to get lost if you do try to walk as the first half of the walk involves lots of turns down side street, although once you have negotiated these smaller streets navigation becomes very easy as streets in Hat Yai city centre are laid out in a grid with the train station at the centre.

Location of Hat Yai Bus Station

Google Map of Hat Yai Bus Station

Facilities at the Bus Station

There are only a small range of facilities at Hat Yai Bus Station. Despite being the main transport hub for bus services in Southern Thailand the station is long overdue modernisation and the facilities are poor in comparison to the newer bus stations in Bangkok.

Left Luggage at Hat Yai Bus Station

Facilities at Hat Yai bus station include:

  • Toilets at the both ends of the bus station.
  • Left luggage office which is open 07.00 to 21.00.
  • Information desk with English language speakers.
  • Coffee shops and snack food shops.
  • Tesco Lotus convenience store on the street in front of the station.
  • Restaurants and food stalls on the street in front of the station.

Buy Tickets at the Bus Station

Inside the bus station there are many many ticket counter with glass screens each for a different company. Several companies may do the same route at different times and with different types of vehicles. Some of these can be booked in advance, others cannot and you simply turn up before travelling and purchase a ticket. Many of the counters have signs in English showing destinations, times and prices. Others do not. The best thing to do is to ask someone working at one of these counters and they will direct you to the correct one.

Popular Journeys from Hat Yai

How to Get From --> Phuket to Koh Lipe

Leaving from...

Going to...

What to expect when visiting Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is a Thai island in the Andaman Sea, near the Malaysian border. An ocean lover’s dream, you’ll find colourful coral gardens just a few metres from its shores. The waters surrounding the island are said to be home to 25% of the world’s tropical fish species!

Combine this with Koh Lipe’s pristine beaches and clear blue waters, and you’ll understand why it’s becoming such a famous destination for snorkelling and diving. What we love most is that fewer tourists are travelling to Koh Lipe , making it the perfect place to get away from it all.

3 ways to get from Phuket to Koh Lipe

Where to stay in koh lipe.

Still looking for accommodation? Don't forget to check out our favourite places to stay in Koh Lipe at the bottom of this page.

Phuket to Koh Lipe by Bus + Ferry

Travelling by bus/minivan and ferry from Phuket to Koh Lipe is not the best option because it takes almost twice the time. It does, however, serve as a good alternative if you want to save your budget.

For this journey, you will have to take a bus from Phuket to Hat Yai first. From Hat Yai, you can book a combined van+ferry tickets to Koh Lipe. The van will first bring you to Pak Bara pier, from where it is only a 1.5-hour ferry ride to Koh Lipe.

Unfortunately, there is no combined ticket for bus and ferry that goes directly from Phuket to Koh Lipe.

This means you have to arrange the transfer to Hat Yai by yourself. See the step-by-step guide below.

Step 1: Phuket to Hat Yai by Bus

Sri Trang Tour is the only bus company offering bus trips from Phuket to Hat Yai. The bus has several departures a day, between 05:00 and 21:30. You can choose between an economy and a standard bus.

Bus from Phuket heading to Hat Yai departs from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 , which is just a 10-minute drive from the Phuket town centre.

The bus will arrive at Hat Yai Bus Terminal , located 3 kms from the town centre.

We recommend taking this night bus so you don’t lose a day travelling. When you arrive at Hat Yai in the early morning, you can still stretch your legs and have breakfast before the first van departs for Koh Lipe at 08:00.

Local Buses from Phuket to Hat Yai*

*COVID-19 UPDATE : We couldn’t confirm the latest schedule for this local bus. If you want to be sure of your tickets, we recommend booking the tickets mentioned above.

There is also one local bus that operates on this route. This departs from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 at 21:30 and is due to arrive at the Hat Yai Bus Station at 03:30. You can buy tickets directly at the bus terminal for around 270 THB ($7.00) .

Unfortunately, you will likely have to wait for 4-5 hours before you can continue on to the second leg of the journey. For this reason, we would recommend booking the Sri Tran Tour bus for a more comfortable journey.

Step 2: Hat Yai to Koh Lipe by Minivan + Ferry

From Hat Yai, there are many companies that offer combined van + ferry rides from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe. The combined minivan and ferry ride takes around 4-6 hours.

The first leg of this journey from Hat Yai to Koh Lipe will take about 2 hours to reach Pak Bara Pier by minivan. From there, you will be transferred to the 1.5-hour ferry to Koh Lipe.

The most popular ones are Sukhothai Tour Hat Yai, Dee Travels Hat Yai, and Smart En Plus. All minivans listed below conveniently leave from Hat Yai Bus Terminal. This is the same bus terminal where the buses from Phuket arrive.

Phuket to Koh Lipe by Flight + Ferry

A combination of flight and van+ferry is another alternative to travel from Phuket to Koh Lipe. It’s cheaper than the direct ferry and takes around the same time.

Still, the journey from Phuket to Koh Lipe will be much more spectacular. Also, bear in mind that you will need to arrange transport from your accommodation in Phuket to Phuket Airport.

Because Koh Lipe doesn’t have an airport, you have to fly from Phuket to Hat Yai. The flight from Phuket to Hat Yai takes only one hour.

From Hat Yai Airport, there are also several minivans departing to Koh Lipe. The minivan tickets include a transfer to the ferry to Koh Lipe.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Step 1: Phuket to Hat Yai by Flight

Direct flights from Phuket to Hat Yai take only 1 hour and fares start from 1,200 THB ($33.00) .

This direct flight is operated by Bangkok Airways, with one daily flight departing at 9:35. Flights from Phuket Airport arrive at Hat Yai International Airport at 10:35. Unfortunately, this current schedule won’t give you enough time to transfer to the minivans departing from Hat Yai Airport.

We recommend checking the button below to see if there are new flights scheduled with an earlier arrival time.

Step 2: Hat Yai Airport to Koh Lipe by Minivan + Ferry

There are several minivans departing from Hat Yai bus terminal, as well as Hat Yai Airport.

Note that the latest departure time from Hat Yai Airport is 11:30 because the minivans need to be on time at Pak Bara Pier to transfer passengers to the ferry to Koh Lipe. This means you have about 1 hour after your flight lands.

This gives you normally enough time, but keep in mind that a delay in your flight schedule might result in missing this transfer. If you miss your transfer, you will need to stay one night in Hat Yai before continuing to Koh Lipe.

The minivan to Pak Bara Pier takes about 2 hours and the ferry to Koh Lipe takes about 1.5 hours. Including transfer time this total journey will take 4-6 hours.

Phuket to Koh Lipe by Ferry

Although not cheap, there are 2 direct ferries operating from Phuket to Koh Lipe. Travel time is around 5-7 hours and you can get a seat for 3,400 THB ($93).

The 2 ferry companies that operate from Phuket to Koh Lipe are Bundhaya Speedboat (incl. pick-up) and Satun Pakbara Speedboat. The ferry operators have alternating schedules which means that only one ferry leaves per day.

Tigerline High-Speed Ferry used to be another popular operator for the Phuket to Koh Lipe route. But the last time we checked (May 2022), this company is unavailable.

Note that ferry tickets used to be cheaper at 2,550 THB ($71.00) with all 3 ferry companies. However, due to the pandemic, the companies raised their rates and operate less often. Likely this will change once the demand for this route rises again.

Departure station

Ferries heading to Koh Lipe from Phuket usually depart from Rassada Pier . The pier is only a 20-minute drive from Phuket town centre. You can take a songthaew, a minivan, or a Grab taxi with fares starting from 300 THB ($8.00) .

Luckily, Bundhaya Speedboat offers free hotel pick in the most popular areas of Phuket, so you won’t have to worry about transportation going to the pier. See here the areas they serve:

  • Phuket town

Ferry Schedule from Phuket to Koh Lipe

Arrival station.

All ferries dock on a floating platform in front of Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe. On arrival, you will have to pay an additional 50 THB ($1.30) for a long-tail boat ride to the shore, plus 200 THB ($5.50) mandatory tourist fee when entering Koh Lipe.

Be sure to check the weather prior to booking your ferry trip from Phuket to Koh Lipe. Ferries may be suspended if the weather is not favourable. Also, be aware that fewer ferries operate on this route during the low season (April to mid-October).
