Previously On The Journey

The Journey, which debuted in FIFA 17, was the first of its kind, the first FIFA story mode that focused on a single character’s career, powered by both user choice and actual match gameplay. Thanks to powerfully-rendered cinematics from the Frostbite engine, players could experience Alex Hunter’s story firsthand. The story continued in FIFA 18 with The Journey: Hunter Returns, and is about to reach its dramatic conclusion in FIFA 19 with The Journey: Champions.

Our Story Begins (The Journey)

We are introduced to Alex as he competes as a young lad for his U-11 squad in London’s Clapham Common. As the scene unfolds, we also meet many of the other members of The Journey cast: Alex’s childhood best friend Gareth Walker, his mother Catherine, father Harold, and grandfather Jim. After a dramatic penalty shootout, the story jumps ahead seven years to an “exit trial” at the National Football Academy in which both Alex and Gareth compete to impress Premier League scouts. This is where Alex meets Danny Williams, another promising player competing in the exit trials who gives Alex a hard time throughout the event. After Alex completes the exit trial, he is approached by football agent Michael Taylor and eventually hires him to be his first agent. Michael gets Alex a professional contract with the Premier League club of his choice, and we later find out that Gareth also signed for the same club. The two young players attend preseason in the United States together, but Alex only plays for the club for a brief time when he finds out that the club has signed a superstar—which means that he’s going on loan to a Championship club. As soon as Alex arrives at his new club, he runs into an old “friend”—Danny Williams. Alex impresses on loan alongside Danny as the two develop a close partnership (and friendship), but he gets a sudden recall to his parent club in the middle of the season. We find out that this was due to Gareth’s leaving of the club—for their biggest rival—and Alex is meant to fill his old friend’s boots. Solid performances upon his return to the club earn Alex a spot in the starting XI in the FA Cup final against their biggest rivals—and his old pal Gareth. Despite a fairly tense conversation before the match in which Gareth goes a bit too far, the two briefly reconcile on the pitch afterwards—regardless of who wins the match. The Journey wraps up with Alex and Danny playing FIFA when Alex finds out that he’s been placed on a shortlist of players likely to get a call-up to the England national team in the near future.

Alex's First Big Move (The Journey: Hunter Returns)

Now that he has re-established himself with his Premier League club, Alex heads to preseason in the United States to take on the likes of Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy. At the end of his time in Los Angeles, Alex runs into his estranged father Harold, who lives in the United States and wants to reconnect. After the club returns to England, Michael Taylor contacts Alex to tell him that Real Madrid want to buy him. Fresh off facing Real in the USA and meeting Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex pushes for this dream move by handing in a transfer request. The entire deal turns out to be fake and falls through, ruining Alex’s reputation with the club and its fans. With few options left and the window closing soon, Alex chooses to transfer to the LA Galaxy after Harold calls him and helps initiate a move. Alex regains his form and confidence in MLS, helping the Galaxy reach the Playoffs (and maybe more). He also meets Kim Hunter, his half-sister that Harold had never told him about. Although he originally wanted nothing to do with Kim, Alex puts the grudge against his father aside and supports his half-sister as she earns her first call-up to the US Women’s National Team. Alex’s impressive run in MLS gets the football world buzzing, and he is courted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe in the offseason. After he makes his decision and has a promising start with his new team, Alex gets a serious knee injury that keeps him out of action for months. The club ends up sending Alex to Los Angeles for rehabilitation, which gives him another chance to bond (and eventually train with) Kim. Once he is fully cleared by the doctors, Alex goes back to Europe to re-join his club for the remainder of the season. He impresses with some solid performances to close out the season, followed by a celebratory return to Los Angeles with his grandfather Jim. After an emotional first meeting between Jim and Kim, Alex gets a call from an agent that represents some of his teammates. She requests a meeting, telling him that if he were her client he would “be a Real Madrid player right now.” Learn more about the upcoming finale to the story, The Journey: Champions in FIFA 19. For the first time in the series, you can play the complete stories of Alex, Danny, and Kim as they strive to take their careers to a new level. -Spenser Davis

Looking Back at Journey Mode: EA SPORTS FIFA’s Long Shot

Posted by: Christian Silvestri in FIFA 23 August 25, 2023 403 Views

The world of video games has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the years, with technological advancements enabling developers to create immersive and engaging experiences that transcend traditional forms of entertainment.

One such evolution has been the integration of narrative-driven modes within sports simulation games. Among these, “The Journey” in the FIFA franchise stands as a pioneering example, revolutionizing how players engage with the virtual world of soccer.

A New Era of Storytelling in Sports Games

Traditionally, sports simulation games like FIFA focused primarily on delivering realistic gameplay experiences, letting players assume the roles of their favorite athletes or teams on the digital field.

However, with the introduction of “Journey Mode,” the landscape of sports gaming changed forever. This new narrative-driven game mode offered players an immersive storytelling experience intertwined with the familiar mechanics of soccer gameplay.

Introduced in FIFA 17, “The Journey” allowed players to step into the shoes of Alex Hunter, a young and aspiring footballer trying to make his mark in the competitive world of professional soccer.

The mode was divided into chapters, each representing a crucial phase in Alex’s journey, both on and off the field. From his early days as a talented but unproven prospect to his rise to stardom, players were able to shape Alex’s destiny through their decisions and performance on the pitch.

Interactive Storytelling

What set “ The Journey ” apart was its interactive storytelling approach. Players didn’t just control the gameplay; they also influenced the narrative trajectory through dialogue choices and critical decisions.

These choices affected not only Alex’s relationships with teammates, coaches, and friends but also his professional opportunities and personal life. This interactive element blurred the lines between traditional video games and interactive cinema, creating a unique fusion that resonated with both gamers and soccer enthusiasts.

journey fifa 21

The emotional depth of the story was further enhanced by the inclusion of cinematic cutscenes featuring high-quality graphics and lifelike animations.

These cutscenes allowed players to connect with the characters on a more personal level, evoking a sense of empathy and investment in Alex’s journey. The mode wasn’t just about winning matches; it was about the emotional rollercoaster that comes with pursuing a dream against all odds.

Celebrities and Realism

Adding a layer of authenticity to “Journey Mode,” FIFA enlisted real-world football personalities to make appearances in the narrative. Players encountered established footballers, managers, and pundits, blurring the line between the virtual and real soccer world.

journey fifa 21

This integration not only added credibility to the story but also provided a unique sense of immersion, as players interacted with both fictional and real characters throughout Alex’s journey.

Evolution and Legacy

As the years went by, the FIFA franchise continued to refine and expand “Journey Mode.” Subsequent iterations introduced new characters, storylines, and gameplay mechanics, ensuring that the experience remained fresh and engaging.

While the mode faced criticism for occasionally straying into melodramatic territory, it undeniably pushed the boundaries of what a sports simulation game could offer in terms of narrative depth.

journey fifa 21

However, all good things must come to an end. The final chapter of Alex Hunter’s story was told in FIFA 19, as EA Sports decided to retire the character and shift their focus towards other modes and innovations.

The legacy of “Journey Mode,” however, remains firmly intact. It not only opened the door for similar narrative-driven modes in other sports games but also showcased the potential for emotional storytelling in genres beyond traditional role-playing games.

“The Journey” is a testament to the gaming industry’s capacity for innovation and evolution. The introduction of narrative-driven elements within the context of a sports simulation game marked a turning point in how players engage with virtual sports.

Through the lens of Alex Hunter’s journey, players experienced the highs and lows of a footballer’s life, making decisions that influenced not only the outcome of matches but also the course of personal relationships and professional opportunities.

“The Journey” mode stands as a milestone that bridged the gap between interactive storytelling and sports simulation, leaving a lasting impact on the gaming landscape.

What happened to the cast of FIFA's 'The Journey' mode in real life

  • What happened to the cast of FIFA's 'The Journey' mode in real life

Tomiwa Edun, who played Alex Hunter, has appeared on several TV shows since his appearance in 'The Journey' mode.

Jack Kenmare

Jack Kenmare

It's been seven years since EA Sports introduced The Journey to their FIFA franchise; a mode that followed fictional character Alex Hunter in his journey from Clapham Common under-11's to the Premier League and beyond.

After a penalty shootout on a muddy pitch in south west London, the story jumped ahead seven years to an “exit trial” at the National Football Academy, where Alex and his best friend [soon to be bitter rival] Gareth Walker compete to impress Premier League scouts.

The rest, as they say, is history. But seven years on from the much-loved game mode, where are the actors and actresses who played these virtual characters? Tomiwa Edun, who headlined the series as Alex Hunter, has featured in one of the most popular television shows in British history.

Lewis Reeves, the man who played Gareth Walker, is even starring in TV adverts these days, although the 'snake' nickname has followed his own journey beyond FIFA.

Tomiwa Edun (Alex Hunter)

Edun, from Lagos, Nigeria, played The Journey mode's main protagonist Alex Hunter.

Ahead of filming in 2016, the 39-year-old was an accomplished British film and television actor with previous credits including Doctor Who, Merlin, Bates Motel and Elementary.

He studied classics at Cambridge and acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and went on to star in a number of Shakespearean plays around the UK before breaking into film and television.

Since the final Journey Mode storyline, Edun remains a respected figure in the world of acting. He's bagged a number of TV roles, including appearances in Young Wallander, The Capture, The Chelsea Detective and the latest episode of ITV's Trigger Point .

According to his IMDB profile, Edun was a voice actor in popular video game Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

"For me, doing 'The Journey' allowed me to explore a 'what if' aspect of my own life," Edun told VICE in 2016.

"What if I'd been born at a slightly different time, and my own life had taken a different trajectory, and this opportunity had come my way? Because who doesn't want to make it in the Premier League? So many of us have had that dream. So I got to sort of live out that fantasy."

Chris Walters (Danny Williams)

Walters, a Vancouver-based actor from London, played the role of Alex’s best friend Danny Williams in The Journey mode.

Before filming his role as lovable rogue Williams, he trained in acting at The Poor School in London and had a prolific theatre career before breaking into screen acting, according to the EA Sports website .

He appeared in independent films such as Shooting the Musical and FSM , as well as television shows and short films in the UK and Canada.

According to his IMDB page, Williams has enjoyed a number of roles in the TV industry since filming the final Journey Mode series, including a part in the war film Beyond the Line.

He most recently featured in Netflix show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – a supernatural horror drama created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

"It was very fun being Danny Williams," Walters told GOAL in 2019. "He did get bigger as the series went on but then I think that allowed them to write in the quieter moments he had in FIFA 19, when he was by himself in his own apartment and losing all his stuff."

Lewis Reeves (Gareth Walker)

Reeves, from Doncaster in England, went from winning a cup final on Clapham Common to going head-to-head with bitter rival Alex Hunter in the Journey Mode.

We watched a young Walker go from innocent friend to a cocky and arrogant character in the storyline.

In real life, the much more likable Reeves earned his BA in acting from the Royal Welsh School of Music and Drama, and later starred in the West End with a role in Our Boys.

The 35-year-old has gone on to appear in a number of popular TV shows, including Misfits, Law & Order: UK, Unforgotten and Crazyhead – and even starred in last year's Audi Christmas advert.

Speaking to SPORTbible in 2021 , he told the story about a kid who waited for him at the stage door after one of his shows in Bath, just so he could call him a snake.

"I still find it funny when people pop up online with my other work on TV and someone will screenshot my face with whatever I'm doing," he told us.

"It's generally along the lines of, 'WTF is Gareth Walker doing as a police officer' or 'who let this snake on my Netflix account?' I always find it funny and love the banter to be fair."

Lisa Solberg (Kim Hunter)

Solberg, another Vancouver-based actress originally from Sydney, Australia, first made an appearance in the Journey Mode on FIFA 18, where she played the half-sister of then-LA Galaxy forward Alex Hunter.

Prior to Lisa's role in Hunter Returns , her first major screen debut was alongside Canadian country music artist Brett Kissel in the video for his song Airwaves, which has over 2 million views on YouTube.

She also appeared in short films such as The Big Cut and Erebus.

According to her IMDB profile, Solberg has featured in two TV shows – Batwoman and Chesapeake Shores – since FIFA 19, as well as the short film Red Moon.

Speaking to FTBL in 2018 about landing the role in The Journey mode, she said: "I had just recently moved to Vancouver from Toronto and 'FIFA 18 The Journey' was one of my first auditions here.

"So, as I was sitting in the audition room I realised everyone else had three scenes auditioning for Kim Hunter and I only had one. Turns out I didn't get sent the other two scenes so I only had 20 minutes to memorise and prepare an extra five pages.

"I got called back a few days later for a 2nd round audition and a week later I found out I booked the role.

"The funny thing is I didn't know what I had booked until I went to the wardrobe fitting and found out it was FIFA! I was completely shocked and as you can imagine very excited."

Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Catherine Hunter )

Duncan-Brewster, a London native, played Alex Hunter's mother Catherine in the Journey Mode on FIFA 18.

Prior to her stint on EA's much-loved series, she has enjoyed a host of TV and film appearances, including EastEnders, Doctor Who, and Star Wars: Rogue One. She is also known for her role as Crystal Gordon in Bad Girls .

Sharon has continued to be a regular on our screens since the Journey Mode ended, featuring on Sex Education, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Earth Mama and Dune.

FIFA 21 features: what’s new and how does it play?

Gameplay tested and career mode upgraded in our FIFA 21 features guide

journey fifa 21

There's nothing revolutionary on the FIFA 21 features list, at least where current-gen is concerned. Career mode, Ultimate Team, and Volta all return in FIFA 21 , but in terms of gameplay true evolution isn't likely to occur until a couple of years into the PS5 and Xbox Series X life cycles. Still, there are small reasons to be cheerful, such as the inclusion of new Benfica player faces. Extra detail is always welcome. For everything else that's new, plough onwards with GR's FIFA 21 features guide.

FIFA 21 features: gameplay put to the test

journey fifa 21

It’s impossible to judge any football game in a single weekend, but our first two days testing FIFA 21 gameplay on PS4 deliver some encouraging signs. Improvements are subtle but key – the most immediate being centre-forward intelligence.

Depending on their awareness rating, strikers attempt to stay in line with the last defender, only breaking towards the ball as it’s released in behind the defence or crossed into the box. In sides with a Kane or Aguero it opens up an additional 3-5 chances per game, again depending on whether they’re being shadowed by Van Dijk or Van Dunderhead.

Other small but important takeaways, in no particular order: Goalkeepers are much stronger on the near post. Heading hasn’t been overhauled completely, but isn’t nerfed like in FIFA 20. Central midfield play is less soupy, offering a touch more space and time on the ball. Defenders’ improved recognition of passing lanes, coupled with new blocking animations that make timely interventions feel less arbitrary, tidily counterbalances the improved attacking intelligence.

For more detailed gameplay observations, check out our mid-September FIFA 21 preview .

One more, super niche detail: as predicted in our FIFA 21 player faces guide, Benfica have been scanned and the likes of Pizzi and Odysseas Vlachodimos finally have accurate starheads. Socially distanced party on the streets of Lisbon tonight, anyone?

FIFA 21 features: what to expect on PS5 and Xbox Series X

journey fifa 21

FIFA 21 is released on PS5 and Xbox Series X to tie in with those consoles’ Holiday launches, but EA hasn’t yet gone into detail on the next-gen versions. It has admitted, however, that haptic feedback is an area of focus: “Sense the impact of shots, passes, catches, kicks, tackles, and hits with immersive controller haptics. A new DualSense controller on PlayStation 5 with rich and responsive haptic feedback deepens the gameplay experience letting you feel the rhythm of the game in your hands.”

More promisingly, the mega-publisher also says FIFA will feature the most “authentic character behaviours ever seen in sports gaming”. An example given is players adjusting their shin pads in the 89th minute, but that’s a cosmetic improvement. What we really need from this humanisation is better player awareness – and the forward runs outlined above are a promising sign – and the end of comical decision-making, such as a midfielder passing the ball straight of play when there’s a winger five yards away.

FIFA 21 features: play Ultimate Team now for free stuff

journey fifa 21

As outlined in our FIFA 20 pre-season guide, this year EA is bridging the gap from its old game to the new one by offering free content simply for sticking with the current edition for another four weeks. For instance, across August there were five FIFA 21 items you could unlock by amassing gameplay time in FIFA 20, as follows:

  • x2 Coin boosts (5 games x 500 coins)
  • FUT 20 Icon Home Kit
  • FUT 20 Future Stars Kit
  • Anchor Chemistry Style
  • Engine Chemistry Style

FIFA 20 pre-season rewards will be granted in FIFA 21 on or before 16 October. If you don’t have the game by then, note that they need to be claimed by 23 November.

FIFA 21 features: career mode upgraded at last

journey fifa 21

FIFA 21 career mode has finally been given some love and attention this year, with the option to jump into simmed games and play key moments at any point one of many upgrades. A major point of focus is your youth set-up, In real life players sometimes start off in one position only to find excellence at another as they near first-team football: Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan Bissaka was a winger in his formative years at Crystal Palace. Those position changes are finally represented in-game, so you can switch a promising left-back to centre-forward if his traits are better suited in that role. Also cool is the option to sim matches but jump in any point to take control of key moments, such as free-kicks and penalties.

FIFA 21 features: Volta gets new tweaks and new locations

journey fifa 21

Like career, FIFA's small-sided mode has received a fairly comprehensive reworking. Interest in the FIFA Street redux waned as last season progressed, but EA hasn’t given up on it. The opposite, in fact. Features Battles neatly apes the Squad Battles of Ultimate Team, Volta Squads enables online gameplay alongside up to three friends, and confirmed locations include Sao Paulo, Rome and Dubai. For much more dip into our FIFA 21 Volta guide.

FIFA 21 features: upgrade your game free of charge

journey fifa 21

This is cool. FIFA 21’s release date on PS4 and XBox One is 9 October, two months ahead of the next-gen versions. That presents a dilemma to day-one buyers which EA has resolved smartly with its new Dual Entitlement program. Buy the game on current-gen and you can switch over to PS5 or Xbox Series X once you’ve picked up your new console, with Ultimate Team and Volta data carrying over.

The one small-but-understandable catch is that you can't switch from digital to physical edition, or vice versa. "The physical copy of FIFA 21 on PlayStation 4 also includes your entitlement to download and play the PlayStation 5 version of the game (and Xbox One with Xbox Series X), so you’ll still be able to upgrade via Dual Entitlement if you purchase a next generation console with a disc drive," says EA. "If you intend to buy a discless next generation console, you will need to purchase FIFA 21 digitally to take advantage of the Dual Entitlement offer as physical discs cannot currently be used to upgrade to discless consoles.”

FIFA 21 is released on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC on 9 October, and PS5 and Xbox Series X to tie in with the Holiday release of those consoles.

I'm GamesRadar's sports editor, and obsessed with NFL, WWE, MLB, AEW, and occasionally things that don't have a three-letter acronym – such as Chvrches, Bill Bryson, and Streets Of Rage 4. The Journey

The journey [ ].

In the official trailer for FIFA 17 on 12th June, it showed a story mode called the "The Journey" which would feature the fictional footballer  Alex Hunter  and authentic managers only available in the  English Premier League .

Alex Hunter is a 17-year-old male from  Clapham ,  London . Hunter's grandfather, Jim, is former English striker Jim Hunter (22 goals in the  1968/69 Season . Under his grandfather's guidance, Hunter has decided to play as a footballer in the  Premier League .

The game begins with a football match between two young teams, featuring a young Alex Hunter and his best friend Gareth Walker . The game goes on to a penalty shootout decider in which Hunter or Walker scores the winning penalty. A scout watches over him and remarks about his talent to Alex's grandfather, former footballer Jim Hunter.

Seven years later, in 2016, Alex Hunter and Gareth Walker take on exit trial, if passed Alex Hunter has a choice of all 20 Premier League clubs to sign for. Alex signs with his Granddad's former professional club and the news is broken to him that Gareth Walker also decided to sign with the same club as well.

Both players attend the club's pre-season tour of the  United States , where they play against  Real Madrid ,  Borussia Dortmund  and  Paris Saint-Germain . Alex Hunter starts against  Dortmund .

After performing well at training, Hunter and Walker make the team sheet for the first squad and play Liverpool away. (If the player is Liverpool for their chosen club, they will play Chelsea away). Gareth Walker is chosen to lead the starting XI out and Hunter is made to sit on the bench. Before they could head out, Hunter wishes Walker good luck and offers him a fist bump, but Walker overlooks, brushes off the gesture and walks off very arrogantly. If Alex wins or loses the first few games, he is loaned out due to starting most games on the bench. Alex can choose to be loaned out to either  Newcastle United ,  Aston Villa , or  Norwich City , as a result of the major signing of either  Harry Kane  or  Ángel Di María  by Alex's parent club.

After impressing on loan in the Championship, Alex Hunter returns to his parent club, only to find out that life-long friend Gareth Walker has left for the club's arch rivals, due to the fact they were willing to offer him more money and fame. After a strong spell in the starting eleven, Alex Hunter starts in the  FA Cup  final, where he faces Gareth Walker for the first or second time time since his departure from the club. In the tunnel before kick-off could start Walker and Hunter encounter each other, and Walker says he only used to be friends with Alex because his Granddad had a connection to the game and harshly says to Alex he didn't mean anything to him meaning Walker mostly used Alex so he could become a professional footballer. Whether Hunter wins the FA Cup or not is dependent on how the game is played. Regardless of whoever wins, Hunter and Walker shake hands at the end of the game and become reconciled

The final cut scene is taken in Alex's flat, where he discovers the news that he has been selected by the  England  manager to represent his country at the upcoming major tournament.

Why we’ll miss The Journey in FIFA 20

The Journey is over for Alex Hunter and chums, and we'll miss its decision-driven drama in FIFA 20...

It doesn’t look like The Journey game mode will be returning in FIFA 20 , with EA’s next footy sim shifting the franchise’s focus onto the new Volta street football mode instead. Seeming like a successor to FIFA Street , Volta will allow gamers to create their own street soccer star that will progress through a story and tackle opponents in smaller matches around the globe.

The Journey will be missed, though. This story-driven mode was first introduced in FIFA 17 , with Tomiwa Edun voicing a player called Alex Hunter that joins the Premier League team of your choice at the start of a new season.

FIFA 18 turned Alex’s best mate into a playable character, with Chris Walters voicing the role of Danny Williams, while Alex departed your original club for pastures new. FIFA 19 saw Alex and Danny competing against one another in the Champions League, rounding off a trilogy nicely, while Lisa Solberg’s Kim Hunter chased glory in the Women’s World Cup.

It has been, for want of another term, quite the journey. And because it’s always worth shouting about the things you love, we thought we’d write a few words about The Journey before the FIFA series moves on towards Volta. Let’s get started with the things we’ll miss, then…

Ad – content continues below

The decision-making drama

journey fifa 21

When you’re in its cut scenes, The Journey feels like a Telltale game crossed with a sports simulator (perhaps with a bit of soap opera thrown in for good measure), with tough decisions popping up from time to time to throw you off your game. Perhaps the most memorable one of these moments came in FIFA 18 , with Alex’s agent Michael botching a deal that could’ve taken you to Real Madrid. Your career at your original team is ruined as a result, and the player is asked whether or not they want to fire Michael, which is a very tempting proposition.

A similar situation occurs for Danny in FIFA 19 , but this time Michael isn’t actually the villain: after a spat, choosing to side with Danny’s mate Ringo instead of Michael will result in Ringo’s dodgy investments being revealed and the bailiffs knocking on Danny’s door. This is a neat twist on what you’re expecting, and it makes you think twice about all your future choices.

Choosing between family and work is another conundrum in FIFA 19 , with the importance of Alex’s brand coming up against his desire to spend time with his loved ones. It takes an awkward poolside cameo from Neymar for Alex to realise what’s important in life, and it’s nothing short of triumphant when you get to ditch Alex’s entourage in favour of goofing around with his mum and half-sister.

The emotional connections

journey fifa 21

Being so invested in Danny, Alex and Kim’s decisions means that you can’t help but get emotionally invested in their individual journies. When Alex’s obsession with his brand puts him in hot water with his manager, for instance, you want to put in the extra effort in training to win the gaffer over. You want your place in the team back, sure, but you also want Alex to be in a better place emotionally.

Danny’s on-going rivalry with his somewhat nasty brother rears its head on numerous occasions as well, and you’ll want to play the game of your life every time you go up against him. You’ll feel genuinely gutted if you lose to him, whether it’s in a training session on the estate or a Champion’s League knockout game. And on the flip-side of that, gaining that final victory for Danny and earning his brother’s rest is a real emotional payoff.

Kim’s desire to race ahead in life is an interesting arc, as well, with numerous people advising her against trying to go pro instead of going to college. We’d never feel this close to individual players in an old fashioned career mode, which is part of what makes The Journey feel so unique. We’ll miss digging this deep into their personal lives, because guiding players in the right direction emotionally as well as tactically is something quite special.

The stories left untold

journey fifa 21

The Journey did feel like a finished product at the end of FIFA 19 ‘s instalment, but it left us wanting more nonetheless. As with a lot of great story-based games, movie trilogies and TV shows, there’s a lot of mileage to be had in imagining what happened next for these characters. Jim Hunter will surely be proud to see his grandchildren (and Danny) playing together in the sunshine, but he’ll still be following their careers for years to come. It’s a bit sad that we won’t be able to do the same.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Kim’s story feels particularly unfinished. As we mentioned before, FIFA 19 ‘s Journey hints that a professional career awaits her after a summer of international glory. Which club does she sign for? What struggles does she face? Does she really become a game-changer for women’s football, or is that pressure too much for the youngster to handle? Barring a surprise announcement of more Journey content, it seems likely that we’ll never find out any of those answers.

With Alex and Danny, there are stories left untold as well. Depending on which one you won the Champions League with, the alternate player will need to bounce back in a big way. Alex’s pushy agent is still on the scene, as well, and Danny’s cash troubles haven’t gone away. And we haven’t seen either player called up for international duty yet, either.

We’ve got some closure, sure: it was nice to see Alex and Danny playing together with Kim at the end of FIFA 19 ‘s Journey, and the scene where they shared some FIFA time together was a surprisingly heartfelt meta moment. But if you offered us a chance to play as these characters again, perhaps when the next real-life World Cup occurs, we’d probably bite your hand off.

And until such a dream comeback takes place, we’ll keep on shouting about how much we loved The Journey… a rare slice of emotional single-player drama for the franchise, which will definitely be missed.

FIFA 20 launches on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on 27 September. In the meantime, you might like to check out our coverage of the PES 2020 demo to see how the competition is doing.

Will The Journey be in FIFA 24?

A familiar face could be about to return

The Journey Alex Hunter fifa 24

Published: Feb 17, 2023, 9:47 Updated: Feb 17, 2023, 10:05

The release of FIFA 24 is just around the corner, with a new era beginning in sports gaming.

With EA and FIFA parting ways, the game as we know it will now be named EA Sports FC .

A new name doesn't mean a return to old classic has been written off, and we've got the latest on whether The Journey could return to FIFA 24.

Right now, there are no confirmed plans for The Journey to feature in FIFA 24, but never say never.

The Journey has proven to be an enduring feature in the eyes of FIFA fans, who still fondly recall progressing the career of Alex Hunter.

Some players have even been calling for the mode to return, with a more narrative driven approach certainly adding some diversity to FIFA's list of modes.

With EA Sports FC signalling the start of a brand new era, EA could make their stamp on a new game by re-introducing more narrative based player careers, like we see in the NBA 2K series.

Similar features seen in The Journey were implemented in FIFA 23 Career Mode, but it's yet to to hit the heights we saw a few years ago.

Whilst nothing is confirmed either way, we'd love to take another dive back into life of Alex Hunter.

What is The Journey?

For those that haven't experienced the thrill of guiding Alex Hunter from rookie to certified star, The Journey was a narrative driven story mode that featured in FIFA.

A three-part story that featured in FIFA 17, FIFA 18 and culminated in FIFA 19, The Journey was a breath of fresh air as EA made a bold stride into telling genuine stories in their sports games.

Decisions made both on and off of the pitch altered the life of Alex Hunter and a truly spectacular narrative was formed.

It may not have been to everyone's taste, but there's no doubt that this kind of mode is sorely missing from FIFA today.

'Unbelievable': Video shows massive dust storm rolling across New Mexico

journey fifa 21

All eyes were on New Mexico Wednesday as a unique weather event swept through the region, enveloping many cities across the state in a thick brown haze momentarily.

The dust storm, also known as a "haboob" hit New Mexico and northern Mexico, carving 200-mile path through the area in seconds, according to satellite video footage obtained by USA TODAY.

Scientists in the area were more surprised by the haboob's size than by its pace, with a couple revealing on social media that it was the "largest" dust storm they had ever witnessed.

The haboob was generated by winds pushed forward, away from a major thunderstorm outbreak that began in central New Mexico, an area that has been devastated by wildfires in the last week, according to reporting by The Washington Post. The dust made its way over Arizona on Thursday morning, producing hazy skies in Phoenix, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were also expected hit across New Mexico through Friday afternoon, USA TODAY reported. Areas that have been scorched by the fire were "particularly susceptible to debris flow and flash flooding concerns."

While the appearance of the haboob in New Mexico made for some pretty epic visuals, others were impacted by the gusts of winds and low visibility on the ground. Local news outlets reported that 18 people were sent to the hospital after a multi-car pileup on Interstate 25 near Algodones.

The weather event is known to create "hazardous conditions" for ground transportation systems, air traffic and motorists because high-speed winds can create a dusty and sandy wall as high as 10,000 feet, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They can last "last for tens of minutes to a few hours," , according to the American Meteorological Society.

What's a haboob, anyway? Weather term defined

A haboob, derived from Arabic term "habb" which means to blow, was originally used to describe "wind or sandstorms" that occurred in central and northern Sudan, which averages about 24 a year, according to the American Meteorological Society.

Now, its typically used to describe "any" intense wind-driven sandstorm or dust storm that can loft sand or dust thousands of feet into the air, creating a visually stunning "wall of dust," according to the American Meteorological Society.

Haboobs occur when air is forced down and pushed forward by traveling thunderstorm cell, dragging dust and debris with it, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Haboobs have been seen in the Middle East, Arabian Peninsula, the Sahara Desert, and central Australia. In the U.S., haboobs are typically observed in regions in the Southwest, from the Sonoran Desert of northwest Mexico and Arizona to the western portions of the Great Plains," The American Meteorological Society states.

Watch: Haboob sweeps across entire regions in seconds

Many were stoked to see a haboob in real life, taking to social media to share reactions and images of the dust storm from their POV.

"Largest haboob I've observed in 20 years or perhaps longer in the Chihuahuan Desert is propagating from east to west. Extends hundreds of kilometers from central New Mexico well into Chihuahua," Tom Gill, a professor at The University of Texas at El Paso wrote on X.

Daniel Swain, a climate scientist, echoed a similar sentiment in the comments under Gill's post, writing: "I had the same reaction to the satellite imagery this evening...I also think this is among (if not the) largest haboob I've seen in the Southwest!"

Others called the satellite imagery "unbelievable" and "incredible ," sharing pictures and footage of the haboob as it made its way through.

Hippolyte: Grenada can get the job done in qualifying

Brazil vs. Costa Rica prediction, odds, betting tips and best bets for 2024 Copa America group match

A t a crossroads in their national team history, Brazil begin a crucial 2024 Copa America journey with a group-stage match against CONCACAF guest participants Costa Rica.

Brazil have shown signs of life in recent months under new head coach Dorival Junior, but they have been sapped of their trademark global superiority over the past few years. They have been eliminated in the quarterfinals in four of the last five World Cups, have just one Copa America title in the last five events, and sit a shocking sixth in the early stages of the current CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying cycle.

A strong 2024 Copa America without an injured Neymar could reverse the narrative and provide promise of a return to prominence, but a poor showing would have a strong negative effect on a federation under recent fire.

Ranked 52nd in the world, Costa Rica are the second-lowest CONCACAF side in the competition and have struggled in recent years. They beat Japan at the 2022 World Cup and also picked up victories against the United States and Nigeria that year, but have secured just seven victories in 18 matches since, and none against truly strong opponents.

MORE: Brazil are a fading force, but don't write them off at 2024 Copa America

Brazil vs. Costa Rica prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean:  Brazil (-1000)
  • Score prediction:  Brazil 2-1 Costa Rica

Brazil are having a tough time and may struggle at this Copa America, but they should have enough firepower to make it past their opening group opponent. Costa Rica are prone to capitulation against top-tier opponents, and even if they manage to keep a lid on the game for much of the match and lock Brazil down, they just don't have enough to secure what would be a famous result.

As the game closes in on kickoff, the line movement for this match has shifted sharply towards the favorites with fans backing Brazil heavily in the final 24 hours. They've gone from -650 favorites all the way to -1000, while Costa Rica's moneyline odds have sprung close to 30/1.

Brazil vs. Costa Rica match facts

  • Date:  Monday, Jun, 24, 2024
  • Local kickoff time:  9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT
  • Location:  SoFi Stadium (Inglewood, CA)
  • Referee:  Cesar Ramos (MEX)
  • Last meeting:  Brazil 2-0 Costa Rica (Jun. 22, 2018 | World Cup)

Brazil vs. Costa Rica best bet

  • Pick:  Both teams to score — Yes
  • Odds:  +155 ( BetMGM )

We'll get to Brazil's disjointed attack shortly, but first let's touch on their back line. The biggest issue for Brazil amidst their recent struggles is a lack of any type of defensive solidity. Since opening the 2022 World Cup with shutout wins against Serbia and Switzerland, Brazil have kept a grand total of two clean sheets, coming against offensively inept Peru and a struggling England.

In that span, Brazil have conceded goals to the likes of Venezuela and Guinea, both ranked lower than Costa Rica, plus coughing up two against a struggling Mexico, three to Spain, and four to Senegal.

Costa Rica will struggle to maintain a high volume of possession and must take their chances, but against this leaky Brazil back line, nearly 3/2 odds on the underdogs to find the net is exceptional value.

Brazil vs. Costa Rica prop bet

  • Pick:  Brazil under 2.5 total goals
  • Odds:  +135 ( BetMGM )

Costa Rica are prone to defensive blow-ups, as evident by their 7-0 defeat to Spain at the last World Cup or conceding six goals across a pair of Nations League quarterfinal legs against Panama. Yet it doesn't feel as if Brazil are primed to take advantage of such an opponent.

In the current World Cup qualifying cycle, following a 5-1 win over Bolivia to begin the slate, Brazil managed to score a total of three goals across five games against Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia, and Argentina. They've done better in friendlies since, but they are missing a true No. 9 up front aside from teenage sensation Endrick who, for now, is a substitute option only.

Major tournament participants across the world usually struggle for attacking sharpness early in group-stage play before finding their stride, and Brazil seem to fit that bill.

Brazil vs. Costa Rica live stream, TV channel

The opening match for Brazil at the 2024 Copa America will be televised in English on FS1. There is also a Spanish-language broadcast on both TUDN and UniMas. All three channels will be available to stream on Fubo , who are offering a FREE trial for new users.

In Canada, the match will be televised on multiple TSN channels, with streaming on the broadcaster's dedicated platform, TSN+. It will also be broadcast in French on RDS 2.

The entire 2024 Copa America will be televised in the United Kingdom on Premier Sports 1, with streaming on their platform, Premier Sports Player.

What to watch with your kids: ‘Presumed Innocent,’ ‘A Stork’s Journey 2’ and more

Common Sense Media also reviews “Kinds of Kindness” and “Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color.”

Presumed Innocent (TV-MA)

Intense courtroom drama has violence, sex and smoking.

“Presumed Innocent” is David E. Kelley’s drama-mystery series about a lawyer (Jake Gyllenhaal) suspected of a colleague’s murder. The limited series has lots of strong sexual content, including simulated sex scenes with bare buttocks shown. Language includes frequent use of “f---” and more. Characters yell and argue, and bloody, violent crime scene images depict sexual violence. Adults also drink and smoke pot. The show is based on Scott Turow’s novel, which was adapted into a 1990 movie starring Harrison Ford. (Eight episodes)

Available on Apple TV Plus.

Kinds of Kindness (R)

Graphic sex and gore in strange, slow but funny anthology.

“Kinds of Kindness” is a darkly comic anthology movie from acclaimed (but also divisive) Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things,” “The Favourite”). There’s humor, but the content is definitely mature. A woman is knocked out and raped; a character is found with their liver removed and slashed wrists; a person chops off their own thumb (and cooks it); a vehicle runs over someone several times; a person is shot in the hand (and the shooter licks up the blood); and there’s the suggestion of domestic violence. A brief four-way sex scene has explicit nudity (male and female), and there’s simulated masturbation and oral sex, passionate kissing, and more. Language isn’t particularly frequent but includes “f---.” Adults drink regularly, sometimes to excess, and we see vaping, cigarette smoking and teen drinking. Emma Stone leads a star-studded cast. (165 minutes)

Available in theaters.

A Stork’s Journey 2 (PG)

Animated bird adventure sequel has mild violence and peril.

“A Stork’s Journey 2” is an animated adventure in which Richard the sparrow (voiced by Jay Myers) meets a new group of birds and embarks on a journey to help them. There are brief moments of peril when characters outfly villainous birds, get zapped by electrical lines and fall from the sky. Cartoon violence includes wrestling, pecking, chasing, punching and car accidents. There’s a bit of language along the lines of “doo-doo” and “screw it up.” On a positive note, the movie has messages about teamwork, friendship and keeping an open mind. (85 minutes)

Available on demand.

Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color (Unrated)

Docuseries centers Black soldiers and the harsh realities of war.

“Erased: WW2’s Heroes of Color” is a compelling docuseries that illuminates the critical, often overlooked contributions of soldiers of color during World War II. It provides in-depth historical context on four major battles: Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Dunkirk and the Battle of the Bulge. The show features intense themes of war, racial discrimination and violence. Soldiers’ family members talk about the PTSD they suffered, and instances of racial violence, including a lynching, are discussed. (Four episodes)

Available on Disney Plus.
