Wish to know about India's best secrets and hidden gems? Explore 'Mera Shandar Bharat, Safar Anokhey India Ka' to plan your next holiday!

The summers are here and the mercury is soaring. A perfect time to spend your days near water bodies to neat the heat. These are the times when Maldives, Andamans, Bali and Goa would be on everyone's wish list. But with the COVID scenario not allowing much degrees of freedom to explore the far of lands, here's a perfect week long road trip itinerary from Mumbai that will get you up close and personal with the gorgeous and lesser known beaches along the coastal belt of Maharashtra.

Day 1 - Mumbai to Awas

As you start off your journey down south from Mumbai, the first beach you will come across will be Awas beach. Just 30 minutes away from Mandwa Jetty in Alibaug, Awas beach is the perfect place for you to lazily sit beneath the towering whistling pine trees as you gorge on the vast and expansive beach area while the sun sets over the horizon.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 1/8 by Mastane Musafir

Not yet surrendered to commercialization, Awas Beach, in our opinion is the best beach on the Alibaug-Murud belt. If a peaceful period of time is what you seek, then Awas beach will definitely not disappoint you.

Day 2 - Awas to Harihareshwar

Breezing past through coastal route, overlooking gorgeous sea forts, castles and lighthouses along the Raigad coast, you will reach a beach where you are about to have an unparalleled experience.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 2/8 by Mastane Musafir

A 2.5 km long untouched black sand beach bed is the place where you are ought to have the most peaceful time in the company of the ocean. Major attraction at here is the Kal Bhairav temple, that draws numerous tourists here. But even if you are not spiritual, there is something for you at the place.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 3/8 by Mastane Musafir

Right behind the temple, along the route of the 'Parikrama' (circulation route around the temple) is a cliff side that opens up into the Arabian sea. A small trek down the cliff and there are some gorgeous rock formations on the walls of the cliff. Totally photogenic and Instagram worthy!

A ferry ride across lies Velas beach, that is well known for the nesting site of Olive Ridley Turtles. Watching these little creatures hatch and make way to the ocean is a phenomenon worth witnessing.

Day 3 - Harihareshwar to Ladghar

Sitting quietly on the coast of Dapoli, is this beach with azure-blue waters that will for sure give you peace to your strained eyes. The beach area is pretty vast and frequented by a few people.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 4/8 by Mastane Musafir

Being a sandy beach, you can indulge in the water sports activities. But our recommendation is to opt for the Dolphin Boat Ride, one of the best places to spot the beautiful dolphins, from a pretty close range.

Day 4 - Ladghar to Guhagar

One of Konkan's most famous beaches, Guhagar is the place for everyone who want to have a lovely time near the sea. On the way to Guhagar, a pit stop at Anjanwel Lighthouse will totally stun you with panoramic views of the sea.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 5/8 by Mastane Musafir

A little further from Guhagar, you will come across Velneshwar beach. A rock-free beach with soft sands and lined with coconut trees is perfect to stroll, swim or sun bathe. Best part of travelling on a coastal belt is every few kilometers you will come across a beautiful beach!

Day 5 - Guhagar to Ganpatipule

Well, Ganpatipule requires no introduction. It is one of the most popular beaches of Maharashtra. Silky white sand and cool surroundings are for sure to relieve the stress you have ensured en route the bumpy road.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 6/8 by Mastane Musafir

The road that runs parallel to the ocean offers some of the most lovely views and classic vantage points for those awesome pictures. The stretch of 10-12 km between Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri is one of our favorites, because the views are just awesome. Best enjoyed with a cup of tea from the roadside stalls while sitting up on the cliff watching the waves crash at the base.

Day 6 - Ganpatipule to Ganeshgule

It has been 2 years since we first visited this virgin beach, but the memories of the place are fresh in our hearts. Totally off the route, this gem of a beach is a testimony of serenity and beauty. Not known to many, it is a perfect hideaway if you are seeking solace and calmness.

Crystal clear water with turquoise blue shades, scintillating golden sands and a beach area that is completely for yourself, there is nothing more that you can ask for from a place.

A small cliff at the far end gives mindboggling views of the ocean and beach, and we saw one of the best sunrises of our lives. It totally enchants you with your beauty. To know more about Ganeshgule, click here.

Day 7 - Ganeshgule to Tarkarli

Just a few kilometers away from Malvan, Tarkarli is one of the places on west coast of India that showcases rich underwater life. A pristine white sand beach and a crystal clear water body is perfect for all water babies.

Karjat also has adventure sports like trekking and river rafting on offer to help you get out of the desk job vibe and try something new.

Kundalika/Kolad

If you are looking for a day filled with adventure with good views and an open road journey then Kundalika is the place for you. It is very popular for river rafting which will shake you up from head to toe and the views from the riverside at the time of sunset are just magical.

Another monsoon special is Vasind which receives heavy rainfall in July and it looks absolutely beautiful. It is an amazing place for road trip and camping surrounded by natural beauty on the banks of the Bhatsa river.

Matheran is the perfect place to go to get away from the city and the people. Matheran is an automobile-free hill station, the first one in India and it is the only one in Asia making it a scenic wonder with natural beauty all around. And best part is that it is completely pollution-free. The above reasons make Matheran one of the most scenic places for taking a road trip from Mumbai.

aaverd8

Daman is the place to go if you want to enjoy beaches at a far destination. Daman is almost over 170km away from Mumbai and it is a treat to visit and has many beaches and churches making it very chill and enjoyable.

Sula Vineyards

ub6gdln

The Sula Vineyards are also over 170km away from Mumbai and the best place to go on a road trip in February. As it is a vineyard, the wine tasting and grape stamping are additional bonuses at the end of a blissful drive. The wine and the view make these vineyards one of the best places for taking a road trip from Mumbai for wine lovers.

Malshej Ghat

eeu2scro

Malshej Ghat is a lovely place to go on a trek in the monsoon and winter season. It is loved by trekkers for the historic trail up the mountain to Harishchandra Gadh. It also offers a drive up to the mountain but it is a bit difficult and an experienced driver is needed for the journey.

Which of these places would you like to visit?

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: Mumbai To Goa Itinerary Via Konkan

I’ve done Coastal Maharastra Road Trip, otherwise known as Konkan Road Trip, twice: once in 2018, and once in 2020. The 2018 trip was done in a car with friends and the 2020 trip was done on a motorcycle, solo. Though I followed the same route, the itinerary was different. Both journeys took 4 days to complete.

This blog on Coastal Maharastra Road Trip Itinerary has been, therefore, written on the basis of the learning from both trips, with updated road conditions as of 2020.

Also, read these Motivational Travel Quotes I’ve handpicked for you.

Now, let’s get started with the topic at hand…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Trip

road trip cars in mumbai

So far I believed that India has everything to offer but a scenic coastal ride, and to get the best of a road trip in India your options are limited to the Himalayas, with Spiti Valley and Leh Ladakh topping the list.

To make it even more ironic, every time someone asked me about my favourite coastal route in the world the first thing that came to my mind was the Great Indian Ocean Drive in Western Australia , or someplace in Italy. Though I am certainly not comparing the coastal roads of Australia or Italy with Maharashtra’s, the fact that I never explored my own backyard that I didn’t know what beauty it had to offer.

And then, Konkan Road Trip happened, and I realised that it’s not just one of the best road trips in Maharashtra, as often claimed, but one of the best in the world.

Note: Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharastra and Konkan Road Trips are both the same. The coastal region of Maharashtra is otherwise known as the Konkan region, hence the same thing. Now let’s start with the route map…

Mumbai to Goa Coastal Maharashtra Route Map

Before you go on the route and start Google navigating, let me tell you that Google will keep navigating you from the main Mumbai to the Goa highway route. But since we are talking about the Mumbai to Goa coastal route, you will have to stick to the coast. Just have your wits about it and stay as close to the coast as you can.

For your reference, here is Mumbai to Goa Coastal Route by car. The same route is accessible by bikes too…

mumbai to goa coastal route by car

For those who love road trips and beaches, the coastal Konkan region, in Maharashtra is certainly a no-miss.

From roads running parallel to beaches to ferry crossings to an ever-changing landscape — that, at every 50 km, shift from high cliffs to beach-side drives to isolated hilltops barren with red laterite soil — the coastal Maharashtra road trip has all highlights.

For an intrepid, there is more to explore on this route than just the scenic beauty. This including a 16th-century Jaigad Fort, a 17th-century Ganesh Idol at Ganpati Pule, adventure water sports at Tarkarli, many flourishing Konkan villages, strange regional delicacies, and much more.

Coastal Maharashtra Road Trip: More About Journey Than Destinations

Though the entire 600km stretch between Mumbai and Goa coastal route is a highlight, the three highlighted places that deserve a little more time include Harihareshwar, Ganpati Pule and Tarkarli (or Malvan).

For the most part of the trip, you will be driving on the state highway 4 (or SH4) which, in reality, is more like a narrow trail than a highway, but the natural beauty and the experiences it has to offer will make it up to you.

I mean imagine it this way… if you’re doing Mumbai to Goa taking NH 48 you can do the journey in about 12 hours. But if you’re doing the Konkan road trip, it takes at least three days (even if you’re driving throughout the day, every day). There must be something great and offbeat about it!

SH4 is known as the coastal route due to its proximity to the ocean. On several occasions (six times in total) it ends up in the ocean or a massive lagoon, forcing you to take a ferry to get to the other side.

konkan road trip

From moment to moment, the Konkan road trip also offers dramatic backdrops of the blue Arabian sea from atop a steep cliff, before taking you downhill for a close hug with the coast. As the journey nears Goa, the highway starts going inland more frequently, over surprisingly isolated and barren hills, with pleasant villages start showing periodically for a change.

Though for most the part, the SH4 remains a poor country road, at times, it turns into a well-marked and well-sealed highway too. Yet, doing more than 200km a day is quite a challenge and makes it impossible since the idea is to cherish a good road trip experience and grab the scenic beauty en route.

konkan road trip by bus

Tip: Since National Highway 48 is a better alternative to the coastal State Highway 4, Google will keep rerouting you to 48. So just have your wits about going parallel to NH48 and sticking closer to the coast. Wherever there’s a diversion, take the one taking you closer to the coast and that’s the scenic route. At times you may have to deviate and go a little inland too, but starting from Mumbai to all the way to Goa, there are a few different (though for the most part the SH4 only) highways running right next to the coast.

The Coastal Maharashtra route is off the tourist trail. Most tourists doing Mumbai-Goa or Pune-Goa take the better version of the roads and follow NH 48.

Coastal Maharashtra Or Konkan Road Trip Itinerary

  • Mumbai to Harihareshwar (1 ferry crossing)
  • Hariharshwar to Ganpati Pule (4 ferry crossings)
  • Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli (1 ferry crossing)
  • Tarkarli to Goa (no ferry crossings)

konkan bike road trip

Day 3 of the journey, i.e from Ganpati Pule to Tarkarli, remains the highlight of the journey with the most spectacular stretch of the whole trip starting right after Ganpati Pule. As you leave Ganpati Pule, the road climbs around a cliff with Aare Ware beach appearing at a distance below, on the right, providing gorgeous views. A perfectly carved road further compliments the experience.

From Ganpati Pule to all the way to Ratnagiri (a 25km stretch) you get periodic glimpses of the Arabic Sea shimmering on your right as the roads wind uphill and downhill regularly.

konkan coastal road trip

The three ferry crossings on Day 2 (at Bagmandala jetty, at Dhabol and at Tawsal) were also quite an experience and offered great photo ops.

konkan road trip itinerary

Tip : Bagmandala ferry (to Bankot) departs every hour and starts a 6 in the morning. The ferry from Dhabol to Dopave departs every 45 minutes, starting at 6.30 a.m. The last one leaves at 10 p.m. From Tavsal to Jaigad too the ferry runs approximately every 45 minutes, but this one’s the longest of all rides (around 20 mins) with the last ferry, again, leaving at 10 in the night. Cars, motorbikes, and even trucks can be transported on all three ferries.

The entire stretch has more than five ferry crossings all operating during the daytime only. Visit CarFerry.in to check the time schedule for each ferry point and save yourself from some needless waiting.

Coastal Maharashtra or Konkan Road Trip Highlights

Though there’s enough to see and do on the way, and one can easily spend a week slowly driving and still not get bored with the journey, for those doing it in the minimum time, yet enjoying a good share of stop-overs, here are my six suggested stops en route Mumbai-Goa following the coastal Maharashtra of State Highway 4:

Harihareshwar Beach

The highlight of the pilgrimage town of Harihareshwar, the Harihareshwar beach is ideal for those looking for a clean and soothing beach where one can spend some unhurrying time and forget their bustling life in the cities.

coastal maharashtra

The beach assures a noise-free ambience with no watersports and no loud tourists around, as most people visiting Harihareshwar come here for paying tribute to Lord Harihareshwar. There’s moreover only one shack available throughout its half a kilometre expanse.

mumbai to goa coastal Maharashtra

Anjanvel Village

One of the many villages en route, Anjanvel village offers an ideal rural escape. During our stop at Anjarle and a few hours of strolling and eating in the town, I found people in Anjanvel being very hospitable, with most of them eager to share smiles and engage in a happy conversation with tourists.

Anjanvel village

A noticeable highlight was the local Malvan food we had in the town, that was more a food tour experience.

malvan food

Harnai Fish Market

Though you’re going to find quite a few fish markets on State Highway 4, Harnai Fish Market just happens to be one of the largest and busiest. The eclectic atmosphere at Harnai Beach with women clad in bright sarees screaming and yelling for their best prices and the men going catching and bringing fishes from the ocean to the land is quite a sight. It’s amazing to see how as soon as fresh fish hit the beach, the action starts.

konkan fishing village

Aare Ware Beach Road

A 10 km stretch of a road the Aare Ware Beach road — that starts right from Ganpati Pule beach to the next T-point junction — is the most beautiful highlight of the entire Coastal Maharashtra route. With its many twists and turns, the road frequently goes uphill and downhill, with sometimes offering a distant view of the mighty blue ocean from up a cliff, and sometimes, a closer shrug.

konkan road trip

Devgad Fort & Ananvadi Fishing Village

If deserted forts and dramatic sunsets overlooking an infinite ocean is your thing then you’re going to fall in love with coastal Maharashtra. Starting Mumbai to all the way to Goa, we came across a few dozens abandoned forts, but the one we stopped by for capturing the sunset was the fort of Devgad and I can’t recommend it more.

devgad fort konkan

The adjoining fishing village of Ananwadi was moreover a great place to capture some village life.

coastal maharashtra villages

Tarkarli Village

Out of all the villages we explored, I particularly loved the setting of Tarkarli village.

tarkari village konkan

Though the highlight in Tarkarli is the adventure water sport (including Scuba diving, Jet Ski, Banana Boat Ride, and Parasailing, among others) for a photo buff, Tarkarli had much to offer. Just walk across the many intermingled bylanes and capture the essence of rural coastal Maharashtra.

Thanks for your wonderful review,..Now I am definitely going for this wonderful trip. A request, can drop some contacts for best hotels/foods, it will help me to manage things well. Thanks

Lovely places you have explored near the coast. I am planning a road trip basis on your itinerary with my family.

Hey, I am so glad to read your thoughts because I really enjoyed reading this. The way you explain your travel experience is truly awesome.

Awesome info.. this is exactly the kind of info i was looking for, for my sept monsoon roadtrip from Ahmedabad to Goa. Most blogs and videos show NH66 or Mumbai – Pune – Belgaum route which makes you reach the destination faster but doesnt let you enjoy the journey as much as SH4 would.

How are the road conditions on SH4 during monsoon? Good enough for driving by car without getting into trouble? Any idea / tips?

' src=

This sounds so idyllic, Dev! Good to hear that you are seeking out the treasures in your backyard.

Cheers Mohana. I am always seeking out for more treasures in India 🙂

Living the Life My Mom Warned me About

A Konkan Road Trip Itinerary | Mumbai to Goa

road trip cars in mumbai

Here’s a fun Konkan road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa with beach stops along the way…

Because why do something as mundane as flying to Goa, when you can frolic on endless beach sand, breathe in the heavy salt air, and eat freshly cooked spicy Konkan food en voyage? Here’s a majorly fun and scenic road trip itinerary starting from Mumbai and ending in Goa with beach stops along the way. The itinerary assumes stops on the onward journey, but you can mix it up and do a few on the return journey as well. Prepare to be well and truly tanned (I took this in April!) and happily exhausted.

The summary itinerary

What you will do on the road trip from Mumbai to Goa and the beaches you will stop at.

The Konkan Road Trip Itinerary looks something like this: Mumbai –> 5 hours to Harihareshwar –> 5 hours to Velneshwar –> 1 hour 30 min via ferry to Ganapatiphule –> 4 hours 30 min to Tarkali –> 4 hours to Goa (South). Total driving time of 20-22 hours on one side and this is on the higher side because of the scenic beach route you’ll take (more on that below). You can return via NH4 or the Bangalore-Pune highway which takes about 12 hours non-stop from Goa to Mumbai. Note: All timings are roundabout, and Google Maps is your best friend.

Two routes show up when you plot the way from Mumbai to Goa on Google Maps. The best and the usually taken route is along the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway 4 (NH4), which crosses Pune, and takes 11-12 hours (for a non-stop trip). The other is via NH66 which goes through Chiplun, Kolad, Mahad and Malvan. This one takes 12-13 hours (for a non-stop trip). The longest and the most scenic route is MSH4, also called the Sagari Mahamarg , which is either a drive next to or close to the sea. In most cases, the sea will be a few hundred feet away, and beaches will keep popping up. The beauty of this route is the two-lane road with sparse traffic running through the Western Ghats and flanked by forests and beaches. The winding roads ascend and descend at will, and during monsoons, the swaying palms, the lush surroundings, the patter of rain, and the gurgling sea make splendid accompaniment. This route takes 14-15 hours (for a non-stop trip) and 20-22 hours for the route suggested in this post. The Sagari Mahamarg route will not show up on Google Maps unless you put one location to the next and change as you drive along.

Where to stay

All my recommended Maharashtra stays, as part of this itinerary, are at MTDC. I am a big fan of MTDC. Modest, no-nonsense and no-frills service, I find it a total value for money. You know exactly what to expect. One Medimix soap, one Vatika/ Sunsilk shampoo sachet, a plastic jar of filter water, beige blankets and white sheets, a flat-screen TV with less than 10 channels, no electric kettle or coffee or tea sachets, no (or poor) Wi-Fi, basic local food which, if you’re fortunate, will be delicious. And always, always the best locations and properties that span acres. Check-in is at 10:30 am and checkouts at 9 am. Book MTDC properties at their website . I’m no affiliate. Just a fan.

In Goa, you’d be spoilt for choice. There are beautiful and inexpensive mid-tier hotels and also some very fancy five-stars. Some of my favourite beaches and inexpensive properties are:

Majestic Comforts in Varca-Benaulim: Cosy beach huts, a few minutes’ walk from the sea, Majestic Comforts is reminiscent of properties in Bali. The private sundecks right in front of the fairly un-visited beach are the clincher. This property has the kind of frills I need.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Cavala in Baga: Located in the busy north, Cavala is quaint, classy, and the right kind of pretentious. Weekends are great fun with live music and dancing. It is a 1o minute walk to the busy and popular Baga beach.

Road trip from Mumbai to Goa with beach stops itinerary

Mariposa Beach Grove in Agonda offers fairly inexpensive sea-facing villas and you couldn’t get closer to the sea than this. The resort is located in Agonda, a sandy beach that serves as a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles in September.

And now for the Mumbai to Goa road trip itinerary with beach stops | It’s easy, cheap, and fun

Stop at Harihareshwar

We used the NH66 to get here from Mumbai, but you could plot from Mumbai to Harihareshwar on Google Maps and drive via Alibaug and Murud, with ferries (check Dighi/ Agardanda jetty) thrown in-between. This increases travel time by an hour or so but is an adventure unto itself.

Harihareshwar is a town in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, surrounded by three hills, and with a pristine beachfront. Towards the north of the town is the temple of Lord Harihareshwar, said to have been blessed by Lord Shiva. Thus, Harihareshwar is also called Dev-Ghar or the ‘house of God’. It has two primary beaches − one, in front of Harihareshwar Temple, and the other, about 2 km long, in front of the MTDC Resort.

road trip cars in mumbai

Stop at Velneshwar

Velnenshwar is a village on the Western Coast of Maharashtra, about 70 km from Ratnagiri, and 20 km from Guhagar. A Shiva temple is its essential claim to fame but it is also home to pristine beaches. Stay at MTDC Velneshwar, an expansive property with great views and a 10 minute downhill walk to the beach. Since not many people visit Velneshwar, opting instead to go to Ganapatiphule, and so, you might have the resort and beach all to yourself.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Velneshwar to Ganapatipule takes about 2 hours but you can shorten the time slightly and add a nice little cruise along the way, by taking your car aboard a ferry using the Jaigad Tawsal ferry service. The route is here . Ferries ply every hour or so. Cost is as per vehicle size and about INR 150 for a 4-wheeler.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

After reaching the other shore and before heading to Ganapatipule, swing by Jaigad fort . Entry is free. The fort-ruins offer a sea-walk along the fort’s walls end-to-end. Nestled on a cliff, the impressive edifice overlooks a bay formed as the Shastri river enters the Arabian Sea. It was built by the Sultan of Bijapur in the 16th century.

Mumbai to Goa roadtrip

Stop at Ganapatipule

The Ganapatipule beach is among the cleaner commercial beaches I’ve seen along the Maharashtra coastline. Located in the Ratnagiri district, the town of about a few thousand residents is also famous for a 400-year old Ganesh temple.

The MTDC property on the Ganapatipule beach is a HUGE. The bamboo huts facing the sea and the VIP suites have the best view. Each hut is equipped with a clothing line where you can wash and dry your clothes—which may seem like an excess—but not so next to the sea. We found only the food and Wi-Fi services wanting. An MTDC boat club is in the works; that promises to be fun. Apart from that, local clubs organize events such as parasailing, banana boats, and Jet Ski. Partake at your own risk. The beach is considered dangerous during many months of the year, so caution is advised.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Part of the Ganapatipule bunch of beaches, the nearby Arey Ware Beach is well worth a quick stop. It is a beautiful stretch of white sand shore and sparkling aquamarine water. Grab a coconut from one of the stalls at the entrance (or hide a beer can in your pocket), walk inside through a lush cluster of coconut groves to enjoy some quiet time off from the tourist bustle.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Stop at Tarkarli

Located roughly 4 hours from Goa, Tarkarli is hard to reach from Mumbai and easily bypassed (you might as well go to Goa) but it is a beach destination well worth a visit. Tarkarli is located in the Malvan taluka of Sindhudurg district, with about 2000 local residents and a handful of average hotels. MTDC runs three properties in the region and the scuba courses run by MTDC’s IISDA (Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Aquatic Sports) are highly rated and very popular. I couldn’t do it because I hadn’t booked it in advance, but I’ll definitely try this in a few months.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Very close to Tarkali, about 30 min away, is the impressive Sindhudurg fort . Built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, this is another fort that offers awesome sea views.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Stop at Goa

What can I say about Goa? I’m so in love with it that I wrote a whole book on it! For a frequent traveller to Goa, the rite of passage is to start from the beaches in the North (Arpora, Baga, Calangute, Candolim, and Anjuna) which are more populous and eventful, and then move to the lower visited, less ‘happening’ but more pristine southern Goa beaches (Palolem, Varca, Cavelossim, Benaulim, Colva, Agonda). (For now) the beaches of South Goa are cleaner and peaceful, with the sea being the only object of glory and distraction, as it should be.

Road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa pictures

Rent a bike and roam about on the quaint streets of Goa. Goa used to be a Portuguese colony until 1961 and a mixed culture is evident in the gorgeous houses and food. Popular places to visit are Fort Aguada, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Mario Gallery, Nights Markets, and some gorgeous churches and awesome restaurants. On the beaches, especially in the north, you can partake in activities and water sports such as Jet Ski, snorkelling, banana boating, kayaking, scuba diving, parasailing etc. Select beaches also have surfing and kneeboarding. Most tourists ignore Panjim, the capital, but it is an interesting walk down Fountainhas , also known as Goa’s equivalent of the Latin Quarters.

Hi Smita, can you share the road condition in your Mumbai to Goa trip, planning for a bike trip till Ganpatipule via the Sagari Mahamarg. Thanks.

Roads are fairly drivable (not highway level but good enough). I don’t recall any place where we struggled. Hope that answers your question. Have a fun trip!

Hey thanks! I’ll be following this route from my bike trip next week.

Super! May you have a lot of fun 🙂

Hi Smita, I live in the UK but planning on driving from Bombay to Goa in february 2024. I am originally from Goa and visit every year and have driven in Goa. I have also travelled extensively around India. I have never driven outside of Goa. I would be taking the scenic route from Bombay to Goa. How dangerous is it? Is it really not busy on this route? Thank & love the blog. regards, Allan

Hi Allan – Thank you for reading. I took the trip during Covid, at which time there were fewer crowds, but I presume there will be considerably more cars on the road now. I am not sure what you are referring to when you ask about the trip being dangerous. The roads are quite good and safe overall. You may want to break the journey with more stops, if needed, to avoid driving at night. Have a fun trip!
