The D isney Cruise cancellation policy is one of the biggest questions from those considering a Disney cruise vacation .

Before you book a  Disney Cruise , you might ask yourself:

“Can I change my mind later and get my money back?

The short answer is  yes…usually.

Most stateroom reservation deposits can be fully refunded, as long as you cancel prior to your “Paid in Full” (PIF) date.

In this article, I will explain the basics of the  Disney Cruise cancellation policy  and how much of a refund you can get if you have to back out of your trip.

Table of Contents

  • Can I cancel a Disney Cruise and get my money back?
  • What is a Paid In Full date?
  • How to cancel a Disney Cruise?
  • What are the cancellation fees?
  • Can I change my Disney Cruise date?

Can I Cancel a Disney Cruise and Get My Money Back?

In most cases,  yes , you can cancel and get a full refund.

Full refunds are available if you cancel before your Paid in Full (see below) date.

There are a couple exceptions to this:

1) If you want to cancel a suite or Concierge reservation.

In this case, you will lose your deposit amount per guest when cancelling anytime before your paid in full date.

2) You booked using “Guarantee with restrictions”

The “Guarantee with restrictions” category staterooms such as categories IGT, OGT, and VGT are non-refundable and must be paid in full at time of booking.

What is a “Paid in Full” Date?

Your Paid in Full (PIF) date will vary and will depend on your itinerary, sail date, and cruise length.

It will fall somewhere between 90 and 120 days prior to your departure.

To find out your specific date, check your confirmation email or logon to your  My Cruise Reservation  on the Disney Cruise Line website.

How to Cancel a Disney Cruise

Cancellations must be made over the phone (800-951-3532) or in writing.

If you booked through a  travel agent , make sure to go through them to cancel. They will take care of you.

What are the Disney Cruise Cancellation Fees?

For sailings through december 31, 2022.

Due to ongoing concerns about COVID-19, Disney has relaxed the cancellation fees and offered some travel flexibility on voyages taking plce before the end of 2022.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT : For sailings through December 31, 2022, the cancellation fee has been relaxed to full refunds available up to 59 days prior to sailing. For all other sailings, see the regular cancellation fee schedule below.

For Sailings After December 31, 2022 , aka The Standard Fees

There are NO fees if you cancel any Disney Cruise more than 90 days prior to the date you sail (aka, commencement date).

If you need to cancel your DCL reservation AFTER your Paid in Full date, there are cancellation fees.

KEEP IN MIND

  • If you want to change your sail date, you must move your sail date to one that starts BEFORE September 30, 2023.
  • You won’t be able to switch your reservation back to the original sail date after making this change.
  • If you cancel your new sail date, cancellation fees will be the greater of: a) cancellation fees that would have been applicable to the original sail date; or b) cancellation fees applicable to the new sail date.
  • Standard air cancellation fees apply if you booked flights through Disney Cruise Line.

Expecting a refund for a canceled cruise? Here's how long it could take

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Are you waiting for a refund for a canceled cruise? You're not alone.

Cruise lines have canceled thousands of departures in recent weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak, and they're in the midst of processing full or partial refunds for several million customers.

Cruise giant Carnival alone says it has been working on getting money back to more than 1 million people.

That's an unprecedented number of refunds for the industry to process in a short period, and it isn't always going smoothly. Here at TPG, we've been getting a steady stream of emails from readers about issues surrounding cruise refunds and the "future cruise credits" lines are offering as an alternative.

Visit TPG's guide to all coronavirus news and updates

Some readers are unsure about how the refund process works, and others are describing a lack of communication about refunds from their lines or the travel agencies that sold them their cruise. But, for the most part, the big question they have is simple: When is my refund coming?

The quick answer to the latter question: It depends on the cruise line .

You could wait up to 90 days

Some big cruise operators are processing refunds in just a few weeks. Others are taking up to three months to get money back to customers.

At cruise giant Royal Caribbean and sister line Celebrity Cruises, for instance, the staff that handles refund requests is trying to get them processed in 30 business days (which works out to about 45 days).

At a number of smaller lines such as Crystal Cruises, Silversea and Oceania Cruises, refunds are taking up to 90 days to process. Norwegian Cruise Line says refunds are being processed 90 days after a request is made.

Related: Norwegian CEO shares his plan for a cruising comeback

"We are working hard to help our guests," Jonathon Fishman, a spokesperson for the parent company of Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, told TPG. "It takes 30 business days from the cancellation date. It may take a couple of days for the cancellation to take effect."

Spokespeople for a number of cruise lines contacted by TPG said they were trying to process refunds as fast as they could. But they're struggling under a deluge of requests. They're also hampered by stay-at-home orders that have refund processors trying to handle their work from home offices instead of company sites.

Some lines also have laid off a large number of employees in recent weeks or have employees working on reduced hours. Carnival, Princess Cruises and Holland America in recent days have laid off or furloughed nearly 50% of their U.S.-based staff -- several thousand people in all.

At Miami-based Crystal, all employees -- not just refund processors -- have been working at home for weeks due to stay-at-home orders, spokesperson Susan Robison told TPG. They're also dealing with an extraordinary volume of refund requests due to simultaneous cancellations of sailings on all ocean, river and yacht vessels around the world into June.

"It is our intent to issue applicable refunds as quickly as possible," Robison said. "I can tell you that many of our guests are seeing refunds issued faster than our original estimate of up to 90 days."

Individual policies aren't always clear

Some cruise lines are posting the number of days it will take to receive a refund on their websites. Others only will tell you if you ask. But that's if you can get through to them. Many cruise lines report unprecedented call volume and have been asking customers for patience as they work through requests.

TPG contacted major cruise lines catering to North Americans about the topic and was given a wide range of estimates as to how long refunds would take. Most fell into one of four estimated timelines: 30, 45, 60 or 90 days.

A handful of lines did not respond to TPG's request for information.

Carnival, which accounts for nearly 20% of all cruises taken worldwide, only would say it is "committed to issuing refunds as soon as possible."

Carnival has canceled nearly all its cruises through September , with the exception of August sailings on eight of the line's 27 ships that remain on the schedule for now.

The situation "dwarfs any disruption we've experienced in even the worst hurricane season," Carnival said in a statement. "We can confirm that refunds are being issued to those guests that requested one."

Refunds even for people taking credits

Most cruise lines have offered customers on canceled sailings a full cash refund.

As an alternative, cruise lines will give customers on canceled cruises a future cruise credit for the amount they paid, often with a "bonus credit" added to make the credit more enticing .

Cruise lines want you to take the credit. With revenues plummeting , they're eager to preserve as much cash as they can on their balance sheets.

Still, whether you ask for the refund or take the credit, you'll likely be getting at least some money back from your line as a cash payment. Even for those taking the credit, many lines are refunding taxes, fees, port charges and other prepaid items in cash.

Carnival, for instance, has been sending cash refunds for all taxes, fees and port expenses that customers paid for cruises, even when the customer chooses the credit option. The result is that every one of the more than 1 million Carnival customers who had a cruise canceled are receiving some sort of refund that needs to be processed.

Related: The bizarre story of the last 8 cruise passengers at sea

It's a task so daunting, Carnival has pulled in management to help.

"Our customer service team has been approved for overtime, and we have trained other management employees to help as well," the line said in its statement to TPG.

Frustration from some cruisers

The good news for those who are worried about their refunds is that refunds are happening. TPG has heard from readers on a number of canceled sailings who already have received their money back.

Still, TPG also has heard from readers who report trouble getting a confirmation that their request for a refund has been registered or is coming. Often, these complaints come from readers who booked through discount online travel agencies.

TPG also has heard from readers who booked with cruise companies that are not offering refunds for canceled trips. A handful of small companies that mostly operate river cruises, including Grand Circle Cruise Line and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, only will give passengers on canceled sailings a voucher for a future cruise -- at least initially. Scenic says passengers can get a refund, but only after the voucher expires in 2023.

In at least one case, a cruise-selling company initially offered customers on a canceled cruise a refund and then didn't follow through on the offer.

TPG reader Kim Johnson, 64, of Tucson, Arizona, said Grand Circle initially offered her and a group of her friends a refund for a canceled Holland and Belgium river cruise. But two weeks later, Grand Circle pulled back the offer, she said.

"Grand Circle emailed us saying that we had been rebooked on the same cruise next year, with no mention of the refund," Johnson told TPG. "We had a new reservation number and were supposed to go online to accept the terms and conditions."

Related: Can I get my deposit back if I cancel a cruise?

Johnson said calls to the company "resulted in us being told that refunds were no longer an option." Johnson said her group doesn't want to switch their cruise to next year. They just want their money back.

Johnson was one of several members of her group who reached out to TPG and provided documentation of the initial offer of a refund from Grand Circle.

Asked about the group's complaint, a spokesperson for Grand Circle did not address the issue of the withdrawn offer of a refund but said the company was "committed to delivering the excellent travel experiences for which [they have] become known" over six decades in business.

"As soon as it is safe to do so, we will resume our regular departure schedule," spokesperson Ann Shannon said in an email to TPG. "In the meantime, in an effort to ensure that our travelers will be able to enjoy their planned trips, Grand Circle has rebooked their reservations for future available departure dates in 2021 and implemented generous policies providing additional savings."

While Grand Circle has rebooked passengers on canceled sailings for next year, passengers will be able to change the dates that the company has chosen for them, Shannon added.

Soon after TPG contacted Grand Circle, one member of Johnson's group, Barbara Ballard, 64, of Tucson, unexpectedly received the refund she had been seeking from Grand Circle. The refund came with no explanation, but TPG had mentioned Ballard's case specifically when inquiring about Grand Circle's policy. Johnson did not receive a refund at that time. But within 24 hours of this story originally posting, she said the company called to promise her entire group a full refund.

(Update 6/23/20) – The Disney Cruise Line has announced that it is canceling all Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream sailings through at least September 15, 2020.

This comes as no shock as all Disney Magic sailings are already canceled through October 2, 2020, and Disney Wonder sailings are suspended through September 14.

As for when the Disney Cruise Line will start operating again, CEO Bob Chapek recently said that the Disney Cruise ships will not be running “for the next few months.” It was also mentioned that the Disney Cruise Line will likely be the last section of the travel division to come back online, after the theme parks open.

Disney Cruises suspended

The Disney Cruise Line is a member of The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which has announced that its Board of Directors has voted to extend the suspension of cruise operations at U.S. ports until September 15, 2020. All ships under the CDC’s No Sail Order fall under this extension.

All that means that no cruises are going to be departing before at least September 15, 2020, and maybe beyond.

As usual, for any guests affected by this latest group of cancellations, Disney is offering a 125% value credit to be used toward a future Disney Cruise, or a full refund on the amount you’ve paid so far. This credit is non-refundable and must be used by March 31, 2022.

At this point we don’t know if cancellations will continue to happen after this or not.

Obviously Disney wants to put the well-being of its guests and staff first, so until health authorities determine that it’s safe to cruise again, these cancellations will continue to happen.

See the Refunds section in this article for more info.

News (6/2/20) – Disney Cruise Line Extends Future Cruise Credits to March 2022

Disney Magic from shore Coronavirus Disney Cruise Line

With no reopening still in site, the Disney Cruise Line is extending future cruise credit expiration dates to give guests more time to reschedule their vacation.

Previously, the expiration on future cruise credits was 15 months from the original sail date. Now, they have changed it and guests will have until March 31, 2022 to use the credits.

In some cases that is 20+ months of time they an re-book a cruise.

The affected guests who have already paid for their cruise can choose one of these future cruise credits of 125% of the price paid, or collect a full refund.

Disney has chosen to extend the expiration dates as it is still not know when the Disney Cruise Line will be able to reopen. Disney CEO Bob Chapek has said that cruises will be the last area of Disney’s travel division to reopen, and no hints have been given to when that might be.

Disney Cruise Line Closure

looking at the adults beach on castaway cay

As shocking as it is to even write this, the Dinsey Cruise Line has temporarily suspended all future sailings and itineraries. We never thought we’d see a time where all the parks are closed and no cruise ships are sailing, but sadly we’re here.

Because things are spreading so quickly, Disney has been forced to temporarily stop the operation of the Disney Cruise ships. From Saturday, March 14, all new Disney Cruise itineraries are suspended until at least July 27 , and some suspended until October .

Disney went to great lengths to train its crew and guests about the proper sanitary health but in the end, things were out of their hands. The U.S. State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are advising American travelers to not go on a cruise at this time and Disney is cooperating with these guidelines as well as other cruise companies.

Everyone is shocked by what is going on right now and will need some time to digest it all, and what it means for you.

We know you are concerned about your upcoming Disney Cruise and what all this means for you and your family. Disney is extremely overwhelmed with guest calls right now, so if you aren’t able to get through on the phone or online, don’t be surprised. They will get back to guests as fast as they can.

We will keep updating you as more information is bound to come out in the coming days and weeks. Right now try to just relax, be patient and take care of your family in this difficult time.

Disney will take care of its guests, they always do. Now, let’s see what we know about the Disney Cruise Line closure up to this point…

Official Statement from Disney

Here is what Disney had to say in their official statement:

With the well-being of our Guests and team members our top priority, and in line with direction from health experts and government officials, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Disney Cruise Line has suspended:

  • Disney Magic sailings through October 2, 2020
  • Disney Wonder sailings through September 14, 2020
  • Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy sailings through July 27, 2020

Guests booked on affected sailings will be offered the choice of a cruise credit to be used for a future sailing or a full refund. These Guests and travel agents will receive an email from Disney Cruise Line outlining details and next steps.

Guests who booked their reservation through a travel agent should contact them directly with any questions. Those who booked directly with Disney Cruise Line and have questions after receiving their email should call us at (866) 325-6685 or (407) 566-7797 .”

Kelly Craighead , President and CEO of CLIA said: “This is an unprecedented situation. Our industry has taken responsibility for protecting public health for more than 50 years, working under the guidance of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and prides itself on its ability to deliver exceptional vacation experiences for guests, as well as meaningful employment opportunities for crew. This has been a challenging time, but we hope that this decision will enable us to focus on the future and return to normal as soon as possible.”

Canadian Sailings

The Canadian government announced they will not allow any ship with more than 500 passengers to dock in any Canadian port from now until July 1, at the earliest.

Disney has canceled all scheduled sailings leaving Vancouver through September 18, 2020. They are currently evaluating various options, but no Canadian sailings will depart until U.S. sailings also start back up again. Once a decision has been made, they will reach out to guests scheduled on those sailings. Please wait to contact Disney until you have received an email.

When is Disney Cruise Line Reopening?

beach on Castaway Cay closed

The biggest question on your mind is when will the Disney Cruise Line reopen and begin sailing again? Right now no one knows for sure, not even Disney or the authorities.

The official statement from the Disney Cruise Line says itineraries are canceled until September 18. That date is a guess however and should be taken with a grain of salt. This date can be changed at any time and Disney could still extend it into August and maybe beyond.

In line with this, the CDC has extended its “No Sail” order to 100 days from the initial order on March 14. Technically that would bring us to June 19, but since the Disney Cruise Line has suspended sailings through Mid-September already we expect the CDC to also reevaluate their recommendations.

Honestly, the current health situation still not resolved and personal travel still up in the air, it’s anyone’s guess when cruises will be operational again. I have no insider info into the situation but seeing how much this pandemic is spreading and how the tight quarters of a cruise ship are one of the places most susceptible to spreading illnesses, I wouldn’t expect to see new sailings before September.

If you have a Disney Cruise coming up before October, don’t expect to take it. Even if you have after that, I would think very seriously about rescheduling it to a future date. I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable pushing it back to anything before 2021 at this point as 2020 sailings are in serious doubt.

Of course, we will continue to update you as soon as we know when the Disney Cruise Line is reopening, so stay tuned.

Getting a Refund for Disney Cruise

side of Disney Magic Ship Disney Cruise Line

Even though all these cruise sailings are being canceled, the good thing is that Disney is giving guests a 125% full credit of the value of their cruise vacation to be used toward a future Disney Cruise Line itinerary or a full refund.

Any guests with reservations during the closure period (now through July 27, or beyond if necessary) are eligible for this credit.

  • One option is a Full Refund. If you choose to get a refund, Disney will give you back the full amount for your cruise that you’ve already paid.
  • Future Credits are 125% of the price of your cruise (on most sailings) and are valid for sailings with departures through July 27, 2020. This credit must be used by March 31, 2022.

While getting credit for a future cruise is nice, with the economic problems that millions of people are now going through, it’s also nice to have the option of getting a full refund. This will be a big help for people in light of the current situation. Disney World and Disneyland are also offering a full refund during the affected dates.

If Disney updates the dates with more itineraries affected, we will let you know ASAP!

What Should You Do?

Palo mask on Disney Mask

Disney is asking that due to the extremely high volume of calls they are receiving right now, to wait until they contact YOU about getting a refund in an email. You will either hear from Disney directly or through your travel agent depending on how you booked your package.

Disney knows you have a cruise scheduled, so there is no need to worry. So sit tight and wait for Disney to contact you about it.

If considerable time goes by or you have another specific question not covered we recommend first reaching out to your travel agent for help . If you need to contact Disney directly you can call the Contact Center at 1-866-325-2112 or 407-566-3510. Again, expect to wait a long time as call volumes are going to be insane in this period.

Future Sailings Past July

Right now Disney is not changing any itineraries past the ones already listed and all itineraries past July are continuing as normal.

Contact your Disney travel agent or call Disney directly at 1-866-325-2112 or 407-566-3510 for more questions.

European Sailings

All Disney Magic Mediterranean sailings have been canceled through August 5, 2020.

  • Disney is continuing to closely monitor the situation in Europe and will follow the guidance of public officials there. This includes whether or not it’s safe to disembark there or if these itineraries are canceled.
  • Guests currently booked on European sailings through a July 27 departure can change their reservation up until the day before embarkation and receive a 125% cruise credit to be used for a future sailing. This new booking must take place within 15 months of their original sail date.
  • If you choose to re-book your trip at a future date, this reservation is non-refundable.

Contact your Disney travel agent or call Disney directly at 1-866-325-2112 or 407-566-3510.

Rescheduling Your Cruise

By rescheduling your cruise you can also use that money you’ve already paid toward your trip for a future Disney Cruise. Since the value is at least 100% of what you paid, this might also be a good option for you.

The above dates in the refund section also apply if you want to reschedule your trip.

There are a couple of things you want to keep in mind if you are rescheduling rather than asking for a full refund:

  • You must pay the difference in the new cruise package. That means if your cruise cost $3,000 before but you want to switch it to a new date where it costs $4,000, you have to pay the difference.
  • 125% future credits. Both the 125% and 100% future credit offers must be used for a future sailing by March 31, 2022.

Again, wait for the email from Disney to take action or reach out to your travel agent first. If you need to contact Disney directly, you can do it at the number listed in the section above.

Future Impact on Disney and Cruise Industry

Besides the immediate impact that is happening to current cruise itineraries, it’s also creating a bigger problem for the future of the Disney Cruise Line and the cruise industry in general.

Even more so than the parks, things are very scary for the cruise market right now. Earlier in February, more than 690 passengers on Carnival Cruise Line’s  Diamond Princess  in Japan were quarantined for two weeks after some guests testing positive for the virus. 4 of those passengers died.

Numerous ships have been denied entry at ports in these months and because of these events, all U.S. cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival have had to cancel their trip itineraries for the next 30 days. This has left thousands of guests to cancel upcoming cruises beyond that window due to fear of being infected or being trapped on a ship for weeks.

Because of the cruise closures and fears surrounding the current set of circumstances right now, Disney is losing millions of dollars on lower cruise bookings. Of course, Disney is one of the biggest companies in the world and can handle some losses, but this could escalate out of hand if the virus doesn’t slow down in the near future.

Disney Stock has fallen to $97 per share (as of 3/30), much of which is due to a fear of continued lower attendance at the theme parks and fewer Disney Cruise Line bookings. From talking with Disney Travel Agents recently, cruise line bookings have come to a screeching halt, and many are afraid they won’t pick up anytime soon.

The problem is not just the effect the closure is having on Disney’s 2020 2nd Quarter, but even if things are wrapped up and contained tomorrow, there will still be an impact on their bottom-line for the rest of the year.

There is also a chance fewer Disney Cruise Line bookings and decreased revenue might delay the arrival of the 3 new ships expected to arrive in 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively. It could also delay the opening of Disney’s second private island located at Lighthouse Point in the Bahamas.

We hope that isn’t the case, but to ignore the financial impact the closure is having on Disney as a whole would be turning a blind eye. Read more about all the upcoming Disney projects that could be cut or delayed due to Disney’s potential financial losses.

Deals on Disney Cruise Vacation

Send off on Disney Cruise Coronavirus Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Cruise Line has already got a bunch of cancelations for upcoming trips past the dates already suspended and the number of bookings has been drastically lower since the situation started to become more of a problem. With every difficulty, however, comes an opportunity for guests who are still willing to risk a little more and go.

Once again, I’m not a medical expert and don’t want to tell you whether to go or not, I’m just sharing with you the fact that some great deals can be had in the meantime.

As with what happened after 9/11 when people were afraid to travel, they already offering some great deals on Disney Cruise bookings for the near-term, and further out. That means you can potentially save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by booking a package when demand is down.

As people get more and more afraid to travel, we are likely to see more and more deals being offered by Disney and other cruise lines. Even now we are already seeing some of the best prices on Disney Cruises that we’ve ever seen in the Summer and all the way out until Fall 2020.

Even if you don’t want to book a cruise for the next 2 months, if you are willing to bet that the current problem will be behind us by the late Summer or Fall, you can score some really great deals.

Palo Brunch Review

Also, there will likely be fewer guests on the ship when you do end up going. That means you will have more space in places like the pool, the spa and entertainment venues. Even booking a reservation at Palo for Brunch will be much easier during this period.

Using a travel agent to book your Disney Cruise can really help you to find the best deals, and is one of the main reasons we recommend them. This can be invaluable to you and really help you save a lot of money.

At worst, if travel continues to decline in the rest of 2020, Disney, as well as other cruise companies, will eventually be forced to reduce the number of itineraries currently scheduled or cancel them altogether. At a certain point, it just doesn’t make sense money-wise for them to keep running a cruise if it’s an almost empty ship. If it gets to that point, however, Disney would then let you postpone your booking beyond the current window, or give you a complete money-back refund.

We will keep an eye on all the deals for Disney Cruises for the rest of the year so stay tuned for more!

Other Tips to Keep in Mind

welcome to Castaway Cay Disney Cruise Line

If you are courageous enough to book a trip in the next few months, then under these circumstances, we feel that travel insurance might be a good option in case your vacation gets canceled or you want to back out (if you can find it). It’s true Disney is offering the possibility to reschedule your cruise, but what about if you need airfare to get to the cruise or if you are staying in a hotel nearby during the same trip?

Make sure you get a policy that has a 100% money-back guarantee. That way no matter what happens between now and the time you leave for your trip you are covered.

Also, we highly recommend using a Disney travel agent when booking your trip. They can help you to deal with any room cancellations for you and will make your life a whole lot easier.

When It Reopens Will It Be Safe?

Animator's Palate Coronavirus Disney Cruise Line

Whether or not you decide to continue on with your previously planned Disney Cruise vacation or reschedule it for another time is ultimately going to be up to you and your family. Keeping your family safe should be your highest priority and you are the one that is going to have to make that decision in the end.

What we can say is that from our own experience, Disney has the highest reputation in the cruise industry for its ship cleanliness and hygiene methods. When the cruises start sailing once again we believe that Disney will be doing everything possible to make guests feel safe and prevent contamination.

Some of the steps Disney has already taken before the closure included:

  • Training crew to follow CDC illness prevention methods.
  • Frequent cleaning of “high touch” areas (elevator buttons, doorknobs, railings, etc).
  • Extra sanitation measures for children’s facilities, restrooms, kitchens, etc.
  • Cleaning of all staterooms twice a day.
  • New hand sanitizing stations and sanitizing wipes located in many places onboard.
  • Each ship has medical clinics which are staffed with many experienced doctors and nurses.

Disney is one of the most well-respected companies in the cruise industry, and if they open itineraries again, you should be able to proceed knowing they are making the environment as safe as possible.

We’ve always felt safe on Disney vacations either at the resorts or on cruises, just like with our experience during Hurricane Irma in Disney World . They always put guest-safety first.

I would personally be worried about an upcoming cruise right now if I had one planned for April or May. I think those are going to be canceled eventually and I would probably take advantage of the offer from Disney to postpone it until the Summer or Fall.

Whenever you go, you should be cautious. Some situations would call for you to weigh very carefully the decision to go on a cruise immediately or postpone to further out.

For example, if you are older you might be more susceptible to catching illnesses. If you have existing health problems that could be made worse, it might be another reason to not go on a cruise right now. If you have an underlying medical condition, you certainly wouldn’t want to put you or your family at risk.

Also if you are someone who is going to be extremely stressed out during the cruise and not enjoy it, then maybe it would be better to change dates even further out when there is less of a risk. After all, you are spending all that money for an occasion you are supposed to enjoy, you might as well take advantage of the opportunity Disney is giving travelers to change to another date.

Disney Cruise Line Safety Methods/Restrictions

Checking into Disney Cruise

Since January 2020, the Disney Cruise Line has been taking extra precautions to stop the spread of illnesses on its ships. It was clear that the current problem started to become more widespread and Disney acted immediately to ensure the health and safety of its guests and crew members.

The Disney Cruise Line was following guidance from health officials and authorities in all the ports they visited. They also kept guests in the loop by communicating and changes or answering any questions they had.

If you are going on a Disney Cruise in the future, it’s important to know the steps Disney is taking to protect its guests. Here are some of the prevention methods Disney had put into place that you can probably expect to find even once they start sailing again:

Mandatory Temperature Readings – The Disney Cruise Line was screening passengers and crew with no-touch thermometers to see if they have a fever of 100.4º F or higher before boarding the ship. This is the same procedure many airports use. Any potential passengers with flu-like symptoms, fever, a cough or difficulty breathing will not be allowed to board the ship.

Restrictions for Guests Having Visited Infected Areas – The Disney Cruise Line was not allowing guests or crew members to board the ship who had been to high-outbreak areas like mainland China, Iran or Italy in the past 20 days.

Coronavirus Disney Cruise Line how it's affecting guests

Port Restrictions – Ports located in the Bahamas are not allowing guests who have been to mainland China or other high-risk areas in the past 20 days to disembark upon their arrival. This has now carried over to other ports such as Castaway Cay and Jamaica.

Asking for Exposure Information – Disney Cruise Line is also requesting guests to be upfront with them and let them know if you have had “direct physical contact” with anyone suspected of having the sickness before leaving for their vacation. This includes living with or caring for that person.

How To Protect Yourself on a Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Magic Smoke Stack

Of course, in the future, if you decide to go on a Disney Cruise or travel in general, there are some basic precautions you should follow which will help you from contracting or spreading illness to others.

  • Wash your hands as much as possible. This is the first rule against contracting an illness.
  • Disinfecting your surrounding areas with wipes is always a good idea. These high-risk areas could include tables, chairs, door handles, TV’s, etc.
  • Keeping a distance of 3-6 feet between you and other guests
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing so as to not spread your germs to others.

For more information on how to protect yourself, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Yes. All ships and sailings on the Disney Cruise Line are suspended through July 27, 2020

Right now, no one knows when the Disney Cruise Line will start running again. The official word from Disney at this point is everything is suspended until July 27, but that could get extended. It could be weeks, it could be months, we’ll have to wait.

Absolutely! The Disney Cruise Line is offering full refunds or a chance to reschedule their trip to guests affected by the closure. Check the “Refunds” section of this page for more info on those dates.

Disney Magic Ship docked on Castaway Cay

Ultimately, whether you continue with your Disney Cruise booking when it reopens, choose to get a refund or make a new reservation is totally up to you. We have a high-risk tolerance so when the governments give the green light and Disney starts sailing again, we aren’t going to be overly worried. We wouldn’t reschedule for anything before November or December at this time, but we are very tempted to book one further out seeing the great deals that are out there.

Once again, if you have underlying health issues that could put you at risk of contracting or being severely affected by an illness, or if you are worried about your vacation being postponed again, you may want to wait a bit more to book and see how things shake out.

We can’t make that call for you. You have to do what’s best for you and your family and your health. If however, you do decide to book a Disney Cruise, you might find some serious advantages once they reopen because in the beginning, it will definitely be slower and quieter for you as the guest.

Again, we are living in unprecedented times. We don’t know how long these closures will last and when things will go back to normal. We wish everyone to stay safe as we get through these rocky times and look forward to more fun times ahead in the future.

We will continue to keep you updated though on the Dinsey Cruise Line closure and let you know when there is more news.

Ziggy Knows Disney close

My name is Ziggy and I love Disney, everything Disney! I grew up on Disney and it has and continues to be a huge part of my life. I started young when my parents took me to Disney World when I was 18 months old. Little did they know that would be the first of an uncountable number of trips we would take. I have so many amazing memories going to Disney with my family and friends and it has been interwoven into my DNA.

It can be confusing, especially to first-time cruisers, to know when you have to plunk down an initial deposit, make your final payment, and when you're eligible for a refund. Some of this information isn't all that easy to find!

As a general rule, you put down a deposit at the time of booking, and then make final payment generally 60 to 90 days before the sailing date. If your plans change and you need to postpone or cancel, you can cancel and get a full refund if you cancel at least 90 days out (see below for slight variations — you'll notice Princess's refund policy is fairly strict ... sorry! we still love you, Princess!). Be aware that the cruise lines’ refund policies vary widely and change frequently.

Here's a Cheat Sheet of Cruise Deposit, Full Payment & Refund Deadlines for cruise passengers and travel agents (note: different rules apply to groups).

Ten Mistakes First Time Disney Cruisers Make

Your first Disney Cruise Line sailing will likely be wonderful, with lots of happy memories of new adventures. But there could be a few glitches that happen while you’re making those memories. Here are some common mistakes that first time Disney Cruisers make and how to avoid them.

1. Flying to the port on the morning of your cruise.

If I had to give just one piece of advice to a new cruiser, this would be it. Consider that, according to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, only about 73% of flights arrive on time . That means that you have a one in four chance of experiencing a delay.

A cruise ship will not wait for you. It leaves when it leaves and if you miss the boat you’re out of luck. A flight delay of even an hour or two on the morning of your cruise could be the difference between enjoying your long-planned, and very expensive, vacation with a pina colada in hand, versus telling your partner that you’ve blown your vacation money and telling your tearful kids that they won’t be seeing Mickey.

Be sure to fly to within a maximum three-hour drive of your departure port at least a day in advance of your sailing.

2. Not getting trip insurance.

A corollary of the above advice is that trip insurance can be particularly important if you’re cruising. Imagine if you’re heading to Walt Disney World and you have to miss the first day of your trip (perhaps because of a flight delay ) – you could still salvage most of your vacation and have a great trip. Not so with a cruise. Other issues that are minor with a land-based vacation, such as passing stomach bug , could be cause for denial of boarding on a cruise.

The inflexible nature of cruise rules and departure times means that trip insurance can be particularly important during your first cruise when you’re unfamiliar with DCL procedures and perhaps more likely to err. Check out our complete guide to trip insurance for more information.

3. Not planning your phone/data usage.

Using your phone on a cruise is not the same as using using your phone at home. If you don’t select a cruise-friendly calling or data plan in advance, you could be looking at hundreds of dollars (or more) of unexpected roaming charges.

Depending on your needs, your best option might be keeping your phone on airplane mode for the duration of the trip, buying one of DCL’s data plans for use onboard, buying a ocean cruising plan from your phone carrier, buying a international land plan from your phone carrier, or some combination thereof. We cover all the options in our post on staying connected with home when you’re on a Disney cruise .

One thing that probably isn’t an option these days is turning off your phone entirely. In the post-COVID era, Disney Cruise Line has done away with paper schedules. Nearly everything you need to know during your sailing (event times, activity reservations, menus, etc.) can be found on the DCL Navigator app , which you’ll need a smartphone or tablet to access.

4. Missing sign-up deadlines.

First time cruises may book enhancements to their Disney cruise 75 days in advance of their sailing, assuming that they’ve paid in full for the voyage. Things that may be booked ahead of time include port excursions, beverage seminars, adult dining, spa experiences, and more.

Some activities do become fully booked in advance of your sailing. Don’t arrive on board and wonder why there are no slots left for babysitting in the nursery.

5. Over scheduling.

Yes, there may be a few things you want to book in advance of your trip. But you shouldn’t stress too much about not having every minute of your sailing planned. One of the best things about cruising is that it is a relaxing vacation. Sit on your verandah and read a novel. Watch old Disney movies by the pool. Sip a cocktail and stare at the ocean. Pop into a show or a round of bingo when the spirit moves you. Go with the flow and you’ll actually feel your stress melt away.

6. Not making a realistic budget.

While Disney cruising is mostly an all-inclusive venture. And while lodging and most food are included in your fare, there are some things you need to budget for beyond the base price of your sailing. Chief among these extra expenses are gratuities for your stateroom host and serving team, as well as gratuities for folks like baggage handlers at the port.

Think hard about the things that will make your vacation feel the way you want it to. Does that include adult beverages, a massage, souvenirs, or guided tours in port? If so, you’ll want to account for all that in your budget.

7. Packing banned items.

There lots rules about things you can and cannot bring with you onto a cruise ship . During the pre-boarding baggage scan, prohibited items will be confiscated.

This may not be a big deal in some situations. For example, if you’ve packed an iron (prohibited due to fire safety issues), it will be pulled from your luggage and held in a secure location until disembarkation. This may be an inconvenience, but you can just use an iron in the guest laundry room instead.

In other cases, bringing a prohibited item to the port could result in the cancellation of your booking and possible legal action. Weapons of nearly any sort and illicit drugs are among the key things that will end your cruise before it starts.

8. Not planning for medical issues.

There are medical facilities on board the Disney cruise ships, but they have nowhere near the same capabilities as a land-based hospital. For example, if you have food allergies or need mobility accommodations, have you made this known to DCL in advance ? Do you have a few days extra of any necessary medications? Many prescriptions cannot be filled onboard.

Have you planned for the possibility of motion sickness ?

And if you know that you have a wonky stomach during any travel situation, be sure to bring your own remediation meds with you. They’re not sold on the ship.

9. Thinking your trip will be “ruined” if something specific doesn’t happen.

Look, we all have a picture in our head of what the perfect vacation looks like. The odds of attaining that perfection are small. Maybe it’s raining on your beach day. Maybe you didn’t get the dinner seating you wanted. Maybe you weren’t able to book a cabana on Castaway Cay. Are those things a bummer, possibly. But they might also be opportunities to experience something different and have fun in new and exciting way.

10. Joining a Fish Extender group.

Fish extenders are a Disney Cruise Line version of Secret Santa, where guests deliver small presents to other guests via special pouches hanging near their stateroom door. Fish extender exchanges are often arranged on Facebook groups for specific sailings. Some guests are SUPER into these and make it seem like this is a MUST DO activity. I’m going to float the somewhat controversial opinion that fish extender exchanges are overrated and particularly detrimental to the enjoyment of first time cruising. [She ducks to avoid all the rotten tomatoes being thrown at her head.]

On your first sailing, you should pay attention to your own experience rather than being worried about whether a stranger will like the homemade holiday ornament you created. Fish extender gifts can also be expensive to purchase and difficult to transport if you’re flying to your cruise. Avoid these possible headaches and postpone any fish extender participation until a later cruise.

What advice would you give to a first time cruiser?

Scott, you mentioned in a prior post that the Disney Wish Maiden voyage had 2,800 guests, of which my DW and I were a part of. Do you have any idea of how many guests have been on Wish sailings since the maiden voyage?

' src=

The following Disney Wish passenger counts were derived from data extracted here from the CDC Crusie ship dashboard which was taken offline after the 8/1 data was published. Two notes, these are not official numbers from the cruise line and this data is no longer provided publicly. 7/14: 2752 7/22: 2610 7/25: 3281 7/29: 3439 8/1: 3577

Thank you Scott. You do a good job in keeping DCL customers informed.

Dwayne Johnson Slapped With Rejection, Disney Movie Forced Into Cancellation

in Entertainment

Dwayne Johnson looking to the right

Actor and entertainer Dwayne Johnson has established himself as one of the biggest superstars on the planet.

In the vast expanse of Hollywood’s star-studded galaxy, few constellations shine as brightly as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt . Their on-screen chemistry in Disney’s Jungle Cruise (2021) dazzled audiences, catapulting them to the upper echelons of Hollywood’s elite.

However, amid their collaborations, a shadow of uncertainty looms over them, particularly concerning the fate of a much-anticipated sequel.

Disney’s Jungle Cruise , an adventurous film inspired by the iconic theme park ride , captivated audiences with its swashbuckling escapades and charming leads. Johnson, in his role as the charismatic riverboat captain Frank Wolff, and Blunt, portraying the intrepid scientist Dr. Lily Houghton, navigated treacherous waters and encountered mythical creatures in a quest for a tree with healing powers.

The film’s success fueled speculation about a sequel, with fans eagerly awaiting another installment of high-seas hijinks and heartwarming camaraderie. However, as the tides of fate would have it, those hopes were dashed amidst reports of shelved plans and abandoned projects. While no official statement has been issued regarding the cancellation of the sequel, the shifting sands of Hollywood priorities and creative direction have cast a pall of uncertainty over the franchise’s future.

For Johnson and Blunt, whose on-screen partnership endeared them to audiences worldwide, the news of the sequel’s demise may come as a disappointment. Amid the fallout from the canceled sequel, Johnson remains undeterred, forging ahead with new endeavors and fresh collaborations.

His ongoing partnership with The Walt Disney Company has yielded promising developments , including negotiations for a potential sequel to the animated hit Moana . Reports also suggest that Johnson is set to reprise his role as the demigod Maui in the live-action adaptation, slated for release in 2025.

Meanwhile, Blunt finds herself on the cusp of a new chapter in her cinematic journey, as discussions swirl about her involvement in Johnson’s latest project outside of Disney’s confines. Titled THE SMASHING MACHINE , the A24 drama promises to delve into the tumultuous life of mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr, with Johnson in the lead role and acclaimed filmmaker Benny Safdie at the helm.

Dwayne Johnson looking surprised in the movie Skyscraper

Kerr’s story, marked by triumphs and tribulations both inside and outside the ring, offers a fertile ground for exploration, with Johnson poised to deliver a performance that transcends mere physicality. Safdie’s distinct directorial vision, coupled with A24’s penchant for thought-provoking narratives, bodes well for THE SMASHING MACHINE ‘s potential to captivate audiences and garner critical acclaim.

Just recently, Dwayne Johnson shared a behind-the-scenes video of his training schedule as he prepares for the upcoming film.

Thanks for all the great questions. Here’s a sense of my training schedule during my training camp for “The Smashing Machine” Thanks for all the support- means a lot to me. Back to work. Have a productive week. 💪🏾👊🏾 #thesmashingmachine pic.twitter.com/1g6QP288t2 — Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) May 7, 2024

As Blunt and Johnson chart their respective courses in the ever-changing landscape of Hollywood, their paths may diverge, but their shared journey remains etched in the annals of cinematic history. Whether as intrepid adventurers navigating treacherous waters or as collaborators embarking on new creative ventures, their partnership exemplifies the magic of storytelling and the enduring power of camaraderie.

Dwayne Johnson hit with rejection by Emily Blunt

Interestingly enough, Blunt was just recently on the Howard Stern Show where she revealed the reason that she didn’t make the trip to WrestleMania 40 to see The Rock wrestle. The Rock, who tag-teamed with Roman Reigns to take on Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins on the first night of WrestleMania, made a ticket available for his co-star.

However, she ultimately made the decision to turn it down.

“I watched it at home, I did not go watch it live. I wanted to but I felt I should… You know because I never, you know, to be honest with you, I never watched him wrestle. ”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s return to Disney for the two major Moana projects signifies a homecoming of sorts, marking a continuation of his storied collaboration with the entertainment giant.

First and foremost, Johnson is set to reprise his role as the beloved demigod Maui in Moana 2 , slated for release later this year. Fans eagerly anticipate another enchanting journey alongside Johnson’s charismatic portrayal of Maui, as the sequel promises to expand upon the rich mythology and breathtaking visuals of its predecessor.

Moana 2 officially cast.

Johnson’s involvement in the live-action adaptation of Moana adds an exciting dimension to his Disney repertoire, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the beloved tale through the lens of live-action storytelling.

At this time, no other information has been given on what we might see next for Johnson, though there have been numerous rumors that he could replace Johnny Depp and become the next star of Pirates of the Caribbean 6 .

What do you have to pay for on a Disney cruise ship?

When booking a Disney cruise, it’s important to understand what expenses you’ll be responsible for during your trip. The payment policy for a Disney cruise covers several aspects, including the cruise fare, government taxes and fees, gratuities, and any additional onboard purchases. The cruise fare includes accommodations, meals, and most onboard activities, while government taxes and fees are imposed by various countries and are calculated based on the itinerary. Gratuities, which are not included in the cruise fare, cover services provided by the ship’s crew. It’s also important to budget for any additional purchases made onboard, such as specialty dining, spa treatments, or souvenirs. By familiarizing yourself with Disney’s payment policy, you can plan and budget accordingly for a magical and stress-free cruise vacation. Do you have to pay Disney Cruise in full?

When it comes to booking a Disney Cruise, understanding the payment policy is crucial. While a deposit is typically required at the time of booking, the full payment is not due immediately. Instead, Disney Cruise Line offers a convenient payment schedule that allows guests to pay for their cruise in installments. The final payment is typically due around 90-120 days before the sail date, depending on the length of the cruise. This flexible payment policy gives guests the opportunity to budget and plan accordingly. It’s important to note that canceling or modifying a reservation may result in fees or penalties, so it’s advisable to review the terms and conditions before making any changes. For more detailed information on Disney Cruise payment policies, you can visit their official website.

Do you have to pay up front for Disney Cruise?

According to Disney Cruise Line, a deposit is required at the time of booking, which varies depending on the length of the cruise. The remaining balance is then due a certain number of days before the sail date. Payment methods include credit cards, Disney Gift Cards, and more. It’s crucial to review the cancellation policy as well, as fees may apply if you need to make changes or cancel your reservation. To learn more about Disney Cruise payment policies, you can visit the official Disney Cruise Line website: https://disneycruise.disney.go.

When paying for a cruise when is it generally done and what payment is required?

When booking a Disney cruise, it is important to understand the payment policy in order to plan and budget accordingly. Generally, full payment for a cruise is due 90 days prior to the sail date. However, if the reservation is made within 90 days of the sail date, full payment is required at the time of booking. It is important to note that a deposit is typically required when booking, which varies depending on the length of the cruise and the type of stateroom selected. It is recommended to review the specific payment policy for the selected cruise to ensure compliance and avoid any potential cancellation fees or penalties. Disney cruise cancellation policy 2024

Disney Cruise Line has a comprehensive cancellation policy for 2024 that travelers should be aware of. If you need to cancel your Disney cruise, the amount refunded depends on the time of cancellation. For cancellations made within 89-45 days of sailing, a cancellation fee will be applied. If you cancel within 44-30 days of sailing, the fee increases. However, if you cancel within 29-15 days of sailing, the cancellation fee becomes 50% of the total cruise fare. Unfortunately, cancellations made within 14 days of sailing are non-refundable. It’s important to note that cancellation fees are subject to change based on the specific terms of your booking. For more information and to review the complete cancellation policy, visit the Disney Cruise Line website.

Planning a Disney cruise is an exciting experience, but it also involves understanding the payment policy to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. In this guide, we will delve into the key aspects of Disney Cruise Line’s payment policy, providing you with all the necessary information to make informed decisions and enjoy a magical vacation.

1. Booking and Deposit: To secure your reservation, a deposit is required at the time of booking. The amount varies depending on the length of the cruise and the type of stateroom you choose. It is important to note that the deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable in most cases. Therefore, it’s essential to carefully consider your travel plans before making the initial payment.

2. Payment Due Dates: Disney Cruise Line has specific payment due dates depending on when you book your cruise. For reservations made far in advance, a deposit is required at the time of booking, followed by subsequent payments at designated intervals. The final payment is typically due 75 days before the sail date. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar and plan your payments accordingly to avoid any late fees or cancellation penalties.

3. Flexible Payment Options: Disney Cruise Line offers flexible payment options to suit different preferences. You can make payments online through the Disney Cruise Line website, by phone, or by mail. Additionally, you can choose to pay in full at the time of booking or opt for a payment plan, spreading the cost over several months. This flexibility allows you to manage your budget effectively and make payments at your convenience.

4. Cancellation and Refund Policy: It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with Disney Cruise Line’s cancellation and refund policy to understand the potential financial implications of any changes to your plans. If you cancel your reservation after the final payment due date, cancellation fees may apply. These fees increase as the sail date approaches, so it’s advisable to cancel as early as possible to minimize any financial loss. For detailed information on cancellation fees and refund eligibility, refer to Disney Cruise Line’s official website.

5. Travel Insurance: While not directly related to the payment policy, it is highly recommended to consider purchasing travel insurance for your Disney cruise. Travel insurance can provide coverage for unforeseen circumstances, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. It offers peace of mind, knowing that you are financially protected in case of any unexpected events. Disney Cruise Line offers travel insurance options, or you can explore third-party insurance providers to compare coverage and prices.

6. Additional Charges and Gratuities: In addition to the cruise fare, there may be additional charges and gratuities to consider. These can include expenses for onboard amenities, dining at specialty restaurants, alcoholic beverages, spa services, and more. It’s essential to budget for these additional expenses to avoid any surprises when settling your final bill. Disney Cruise Line provides a detailed breakdown of these charges, allowing you to plan and manage your expenses effectively.

By understanding Disney Cruise Line’s payment policy, you can confidently navigate the booking and payment process, ensuring a seamless vacation experience. Remember to refer to Disney Cruise Line’s official website for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding payment policies, terms, and conditions.

Episode 123 - Sensory Friendly Aladdin On Stage

We had the opportunity to attend a sensory friendly performance of Disney’s Broadway show Aladdin in Seattle and it was an amazing experience. The performance was absolutely incredible, and with having seen shows on both the Disney Dream and Wish cruise ships just a couple weeks before, our appreciation and admiration for the DCL show cast and crew is off the charts. But more importantly, it was great to see the Seattle Theater Group and Disney work together to provide a welcoming and safe space for audience members who many not feel comfortable in a regular show. Kudos to STG, Disney, the cast and crew, and everybody else involved in making this special event possible. Episode 122 - Revisiting the Disney Wish

This episode is full of surprises. We surprised our son Sterling with another cruise the same day we debarked the Disney Dream. We were surprised by two of our close friends who booked the last available room on the Disney Wish to join us for the weekend. And we’re utterly SHOCKED that, after this cruise, the Wish has absolutely vaulted up our stank rank of DCL ships. We did NOT see that coming! You convinced me to buy dvc.

I love this podcast! My husband and I had been talking a lot about joining DVC. One day I was cleaning and wanted to listen to a podcast about DVC and the “what is DVC” episode popped right into my feed. I found myself taking notes instead of cleaning! I truly enjoying the digestible information and honest experience. Two weeks later we signed our contract! I am excited to keep listening when I need a happy Disney pick-me-up podcast.
