Rohit Sharma to lead India in West Indies Tests, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal named in squad
India tour of west indies: rohit sharma will lead india in the 2-match test series as the senior selection committee added young blood in the form of yashasvi jaiswal and ruturaj gaikwad..
Listen to Story
- India will take on West Indies in 2 Tests from July 12
- Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar among youngsters added to squad
- No place for Cheteshwar Pujara in 16-man Test squad
Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in Test cricket as India announced a 16-member squad for a 2-Test series against the West Indies in July. Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara was dropped while Ajinkya Rahane was handed the vice-captaincy back after his heroics in the World Test Championship final.
India will tour West Indies for a 2-Test series in Dominica and Trinidad and the series will mark the start of their World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. India will play the first Test from July 12 and they are expected to leave for the Caribbean in the first week of July.
INDIA's ODI SQUAD FOR WEST INDIES TOUR
The defeat to Australia in the WTC 2023 final has forced the senior selection committee to make some major changes as senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped from the side. Pujara, who was dropped after India's tour of South Africa in January 2022, returned to the side after heroic performances for Sussex in County Championships last year. Pujara played the rescheduled Test against England in Birmingham. Pujara also toured Bangladesh and was part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy even as questions were asked of his place in the side.
RAHANE BACK AS VICE-CAPTAIN
On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane, who hit 86 and 48 on his return to the Test side for the first time in more than a year, not only retained his place but was also elevated to the vice-captaincy role.
INDIA TEST SQUAD FOR WEST INDIES TOUR
It seems Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had a stunning domestic season followed by a breakthrough IPL 2023 season, has been rewarded for his performances across all formats. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has shown the spark to succeed at the highest level, earned his maiden Test call-up and it seems the Test team is beginning its transition by getting Cheteshwar Pujara to make way for the youngsters.
Both KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan have retained their places as wicketkeepers in the Test squad.
There were quite a few big omissions in the Test squad as well.
Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav were not picked in the Test as well as the ODI squad, but there has been no word on whether they have been rested or dropped.
On the other hand, India have included Delhi Capitals pacer Mukesh Kumar, who was in the standby list in the World Test Championship final and brought back Navdeep Saini to the Test squad.

WI vs IND 2023, West Indies Test squad: Full team list and injury updates for India’s tour of West Indies
West Indies have announced a 13-member squad for the first Test against India , giving call-ups to the uncapped duo of Alick Athanaze and Kirk McKenzie.
Two other players – Jomel Warrican and Rahkeem Cornwall – both of whom last featured for West Indies during Sri Lanka’s tour to the Caribbean in 2021, have earned a recall.

According to Desmond Haynes, the lead selector, McKenzie and Athanaze have been selected based on their performances in the recent A series against Bangladesh. Both of them hit two fifties each in the three-match series.
“We were very impressed with the approach to batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh,” Haynes said. “These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity”.
While McKenzie is yet to play any international cricket, Athanaze debuted in a T20I against UAE , smashing the record for the fastest half-century on debut with a 26-ball fifty.
WI vs IND: Injury updates
A few players remain unavailable to injury: Jayden Seales, the right-arm quick, was called up for the preparatory camp, but hasn’t been selected as he is yet to fully recover from his knee injury.
Gudakesh Motie also continues his rehabilitation, while Kyle Mayers has a few niggles, making them unavailable for selection.

Pujara dropped; Jaiswal and Gaikwad in India's Test squad for West Indies
Will Yashasvi Jaiswal be India's next No. 3? (2:22)
- Shashank Kishore
Yashasvi Jaiswal , Ruturaj Gaikwad and Mukesh Kumar have been selected in India's Test squad for the first time for the tour of the West Indies, while Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped and Mohammed Shami rested. Fast bowler Navdeep Saini has also made a comeback to the squad in place of Umesh Yadav .
It means India will have a new No. 3 for the series after Pujara, 35, scored only 14 and 27 in the World Test Championship final against Australia earlier in June. Unless India move Shubman Gill down to No. 3, Pujara's spot could be taken by either Jaiswal or Gaikwad for India's first series in the 2023-2025 WTC cycle .
Ajinkya Rahane , who was India's highest scorer at The Oval, has kept his place after making a comeback following a 15-month absence from the Test team. He has also been named vice-captain. The rest of the squad, led by Rohit Sharma, includes most of the players selected for the WTC final.
Jaiswal had made the trip to London as a stand-by player along with Mukesh, after Gaikwad, who was part of the original list of back-ups, withdrew to get married. While Jaiswal and Mukesh are uncapped, Gaikwad has played ten limited-overs internationals; his most-recent an ODI against South Africa in October last year.
Gaikwad, who plays for Maharashtra, has a first-class average of 42.19 from 28 games with six centuries, and his technique has impressed the selectors and team management who have been looking to bring him into the Test team for a while now.
Jaiswal has been prolific for Mumbai and has a first-class average of 80.21 in 26 innings. In his most recent first-class game - the Irani Cup - he made 213 and 144 for Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh. That aggregate of 357 is the most for any batter in an Irani Cup game. Jaiswal has the ability to not just open but also bat at No. 3 if required.
Mukesh is a workhorse who plays for Bengal. The 30-year-old is a line-and-length fast bowler who has built an impressive body of work in domestic cricket. He was key to Bengal making two Ranji Trophy finals in the last three seasons and has been on the Test radar for a while, having featured in every India A tour over the past two seasons. He has 149 wickets in 39 first-class games.
Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are all still recovering from surgery for various injuries, and with Rishabh Pant undergoing rehab after surviving a car crash last December, KS Bharat and Ishan Kishan have been picked as India's wicketkeepers in the Caribbean. Bharat has played all five Tests since Pant's injury, but has scored just 129 runs at an average of 18.42.
On the spin-bowling front, Axar Patel provides back up to R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Jaydev Unadkat , who has been part of every Test squad since the tour of Bangladesh last December, was also retained and is the only left-arm seamer in a fast bowling group that also includes Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Saini and Mukesh, all of whom have fewer than 100 Test wickets each. Saini has not played a Test since the famous victory at the Gabba in 2021 .
India open their tour of the West Indies with the first Test in Dominica from July 12. The second Test begins on July 20 at Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. They won their previous Test series in the Caribbean 2-0 in 2019.
India's Test squad : Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KS Bharat (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Ishan Kishan (wk), Navdeep Saini

IND vs WI 2023 Squad Highlights: The BCCI on Friday announced the Test and ODI squads for the upcoming West Indies tour. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar have earned maiden Test call-ups. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami, were the notable omissions. For the three-match ODI series which follows the Test series, Ruturaj and Mukesh will also be a part of the squad, with Sanju Samson joining in as the second wicketkeeper-batter option.
Jaiswal has been in sublime lately. After being consistent for years in the Indian domestic circuit, the left-hand batter had an excellent season for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, scoring 625 runs at an average of 32.56. He has 1172 runs in 37 IPL matches and also has a noteworthy record in first-class cricket. Averaging 80.21, young Jaiswal amassed 1845 runs in 15 matches.
Speaking of Rohit Sharma, his captaincy will be a matter of concern, especially after the WTC final loss. He will get back into the captain’s shoes for the 2 Test matches. But following the conclusion of the series, he is likely to sit down with the selectors and take a call on his future in the longest format of the game.
According to a PTI report, Rohit will continue to lead the Test team in the Caribbean until he himself decides to stay away from the 2-match series. However, the BCCI top brass and the national selection committee will be under pressure to take a tough call if he fails to notch up at least one big knock.
Since Rohit took over Test captaincy in 2022, India played 10 Tests and he missed three – one in England due to COVID-19 and two in Bangladesh due to split webbing. He scored 390 runs in 7 Tests and had an average of 35.45 in 11 completed innings with a single hundred and no other score above 50.

As Rishabh Pant continues to recover from the injuries suffered in a car crash, KS Bharat is most likely to retain his position in the Test squad despite his less-than-impressive performance with the bat at the Oval. It will be interesting to see if Ishan Kishan finds a spot.
IND vs WI, squad announcement: Arshdeep, Umran likely to be included
Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik are likely to find a spot in the Test squad for the Windies Tests. According to Cricbuzz, Siraj may travel with the squad but could be used sparingly to ensure he is in good shape for the limited-overs assignments later in the year.

India announce Test squad for West Indies tour, Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav out
Ruturaj gaikwad and yashasvi jaiswal are added to india's test team after impressive performances in domestic cricket..
As expected, youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturraj Gaikwad are included in India's Test team for the first time after a string of impressive performances in the domestic circuit. While Jaiswal averages around 80 in 26 innings in first class cricket, Ruturaj's technique has impressed selectors and also averages 42 in red-ball cricket.
With Pujara, who scored 14 and 27 in WTC Final, left out of the squad, it is very much likely that Jaiswal or Gaikwad will be batting at number three. In the bowling department, Mukesh Kumar has replaced Umesh Yadav while Navdeep Saini has also been included as Mohammed Shami is rested to manage his workload.

West Indies announce 13-man squad for 1st Test vs India: No Gudakesh, Cornwall returns, 2 uncapped players named
Left-handed batter kirk mckenzie and alick athanaze are the two fresh faces in the squad that also features left-arm spinner jomel warrican..
Spin-bowling all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican returned as West Indies announced a 13-man squad for the first Test against India starting July 12 in Dominica, which will also mark the beginning of the third cycle of the World Test Championship for both sides. Lead spinner Gudakesh Motie 's injury is believed to be one of the major reasons for Warrican's return to the Test squad. He had last toured Zimbabwe but missed the South Africa tour earlier this year.
"Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is unavailable for selection as he is undergoing rehabilitation from injury," said Cricket West Indies in a statement.
Cornwall, who made his Test debut against India back in 2019, has not featured for the West Indies in red-ball cricket since November 2021. It will be a toss-up between him and Warrican for the first Test as the hosts are likely to pick three specialist pacers against the strong Indian batting unit.
“We are without Motie, who is doing his rehabilitation, and this has created an opportunity for Warrican and Cornwall in the spin bowling department. They have both played at Test match level before and are capable of doing the job," said the chief selector Desmond Haynes.
Batters Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze get maiden call-ups
Left-handed batter Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze are the two fresh faces in the squad. “We were very impressed with the approach to batsmanship of McKenzie and Athanaze on the recent ‘A’ Team tour of Bangladesh. These are two young players who got good scores and played with great maturity, and we believe they deserve an opportunity,” said Haynes.
Haynes added: “We had Jayden Seales here in the camp and he has made good progress during his rehab from surgery. However, we felt he is not yet quite ready to return, and we don’t want to risk him at this stage. Kyle Mayers was also considered but he has some niggles, and the precaution is not to have him in the rigors of a five-day match at this stage.

Chase to lead side filled with T20 specialists on West Indies A's tour of Nepal
- ESPNcricinfo staff
Cricket West Indies have named a number of strong list of T20 specialists in their 15-member 'A' squad that will tour Nepal for five T20s later this month. Fabian Allen, Johnson Charles, Mark Deyal, Andre Fletcher, Obed McCoy and Hayden Walsh are all part of the side, which will be led by Roston Chase , who has Alick Athanaze as his deputy.
The tour, a first for a West Indian side in Nepal, "serves as another phase in preparation leading up to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024," West Indies' lead selector Desmond Haynes said in a statement. "It presents an invaluable opportunity to get our players who are not in the IPL back on the park playing competitive T20 cricket, as well as provides the chance for us to expose a few emerging prospects."
Chase, initially considered a Test specialist in the West Indies, made his T20I debut only in 2021. He was in West Indies' team for their last bilateral T20I engagement, in Australia earlier this year, and scored a 20-ball 37 and picked up 2 for 19 in his four overs in the only match he played in the series, which was also the only game out of the three which West Indies won.
"Chase has exhibited over the past few years an impressive work ethic and proven leadership qualities," Haynes said. "No doubt since Chase made his T20I debut in October 2021, for West Indies against Bangladesh, he has continued to make considerable strides."
The World Cup, to be played in June in the USA and the West Indies, will feature Nepal among the 20 teams in the fray.
West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy said, "From a coaching perspective, the Nepal tour couldn't have come at a more opportune time. It offers us a chance to refine our World Cup squad, defining roles and personnel more clearly. Additionally, with nine players in the IPL, we can truly gauge and push the limits of our T20 team's depth."
The nine West Indians at the IPL are Andre Russell, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph, Shimron Hetmyer and Shamar Joseph, apart from Sunil Narine, who has ruled out a comeback for West Indies for the World Cup.
The West Indies side in Nepal will be coached by Floyd Reifer, with Rayon Griffith as his assistant.
