Understanding the Essence of Dua When Traveling

In Islam, dua is an integral part of our relationship with Allah. It is a way to communicate our hopes, fears, and desires, seeking His guidance and blessings in all aspects of life. Dua is a reflection of our faith, humility, and trust in the Divine. When we make dua, we acknowledge our dependence on Allah and His control over every aspect of our lives. Through dua, we establish a profound connection with our Creator, finding solace and strength in His infinite mercy.

Dua Before the Journey

Embarking on a journey is an exciting yet uncertain time. Before setting foot outside our homes, it is crucial to seek Allah’s protection and blessings. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever leaves his home, and says: ‘In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no might nor power except with Allah,’ it will be said to him: ‘You have been guided, defended, and protected,’ and the devil will go far away from him” (Sunan Abu Dawood).

In preparation for your journey, take a moment to make dua. Seek Allah’s protection from all potential hardships and calamities that may come your way. Offer supplications for a smooth and safe journey, accompanied by His divine mercy. By starting your travels with the remembrance of Allah, you invoke His blessings and pave the way for a secure expedition.

Dua During the Journey

As you embark on your journey, the significance of dua remains steadfast. Each step, whether on land, air, or sea, presents unique challenges and unforeseen circumstances. In these moments, turning to Allah through dua provides us with tranquility and assurance. We implore His protection, guidance, and assistance, understanding that our safety lies solely in His hands.

During the journey, offer prayers specific to each stage, seeking Allah’s safeguarding grace. Whether you’re boarding a plane, driving on a busy highway, or navigating through unfamiliar terrain, take a moment to recite supplications tailored to your circumstances. These prayers become a shield against accidents, discomfort, and any potential harm. By placing your trust in Allah and making dua, you invite His divine intervention, transforming your journey into a blessed and secure experience.

Dua Upon Arrival

Upon reaching your destination, express your gratitude to Allah for His protection and guidance. Offer prayers of thanksgiving, recognizing that your safe arrival is a testament to His mercy and benevolence. At this juncture, take a moment to make dua for a blessed stay and positive experiences throughout your journey. Seek His blessings in exploring new places, meeting new people, and gaining valuable insights from your travels.

Remember, dua is not limited to seeking protection from harm; it is also about seeking blessings, prosperity, and spiritual growth. Embrace the opportunity to connect with Allah, for He is ever-ready to respond to your heartfelt supplications.

Can dua change the course of my journey?

While we ultimately rely on Allah’s divine decree, dua has the power to invoke His intervention and influence the outcome of our journey. It instills within us a sense of tranquility, strengthens our faith, and aligns our actions with His guidance.

Are there specific duas for different modes of travel?

Yes, there are supplications and prayers tailored to various forms of travel. These include prayers for boarding a plane, driving, sailing, or any other mode of transportation. These specific duas ensure that we seek Allah’s protection and blessings throughout the journey.

In the realm of travel, dua serves as a faithful companion, offering solace, protection, and blessings. By understanding the essence of dua, making supplications before, during, and after the journey, and expressing gratitude upon arrival, we infuse our travels with spirituality and divine guidance. Embrace the power of dua, for it is an integral part of our faith and an ever-present source of strength. Let your journey be safe, blessed, and filled with the mercy of Allah, knowing that you are under His watchful care.

As we embark on our travels, may we always remember the profound impact dua can have on our journeys, both in this world and the next.

Dua for travel

The Blessings of Dua for Journeys

Dua, or supplication, is an integral aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a means of communicating with Allah, seeking His guidance, and asking for His blessings. When it comes to traveling, making dua is highly recommended as it is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance during the journey. In this article, we will explore the importance of dua for travel from a Sunnah perspective, and provide a dua for travel along with its Arabic text, transliteration, and translation.

In Islam, dua is considered to be the essence of worship. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of making dua in various aspects of life, including travel. He is reported to have said, “There are three whose supplication is not rejected: the fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just ruler, and the one who is oppressed” (Tirmidhi). This indicates the special status of dua, and its potency in seeking Allah’s favor.

Traveling, whether for leisure or for a specific purpose, can be fraught with uncertainties and challenges. Making dua before embarking on a journey is a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance, and to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience. It is a way of acknowledging our reliance on Allah and humbly seeking His assistance. Moreover, the act of making dua fosters a sense of mindfulness and connection with Allah, thereby enhancing our spiritual journey.

A powerful dua for travel is as follows:

Arabic: سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ Transliteration: Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Translation: “Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.”

This dua is to be recited during the journey, whether it be by air, land, sea, or any other means of transport. It is a way of acknowledging Allah’s control over the means of transportation and seeking His protection and guidance throughout the travel.

The act of reciting this dua not only serves as a way to seek Allah’s protection and guidance but also as a means of expressing gratitude for the means of travel and acknowledging Allah’s control over all aspects of our lives.

Giving Charity with Sincere Intentions

In Islam, charity holds immense significance, and it is regarded as a means of seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. The act of giving charity with sincere intentions can serve as a way to seek Allah’s favors, and it can potentially help in the fulfillment of one’s dua. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity” (Tirmidhi). By giving in charity with a sincere heart, one not only fulfills their obligation towards those in need but also seeks Allah’s mercy and blessings. This act of kindness and generosity can contribute to the fulfillment of one’s supplications, including those made for safe traveling and a smooth journey.

The dua for travel provided above serves as a means to acknowledge Allah’s control over our journeys and seek His blessings for a safe and smooth travel experience. Additionally, giving in charity with a sincere heart can further aid in the fulfillment of one’s supplications.

As Muslims, it is important to incorporate these practices into our lives and recognize the power of dua and charity in seeking Allah’s favor and blessings. May Allah grant us safe travels and accept our supplications. Ameen.

Five Powerful Duas and Prayers for Traveling

travel safe dua

Last updated on November 17th, 2021 at 08:40 am

Have you ever found yourself on the plane ready to take off, but unable to find your booklet of prayers for traveling? Often we find ourselves without access to these special duas or prayers when we need them the most. In our opinion, memorizing duas is the best solution.

One of the beautiful things about Islam is that there is a prayer for our normal daily activities and even prayers for traveling abroad .  When we embark on a journey, we should recite a prayer to Allah and remember Him. It brings us closer to Allah and also saves us from any untoward incident that may take place on our journey.

As per Islamic teachings, reciting a dua not only brings Allah’s protection; it also mobilizes angels to protect us during our journey and bring us safely back home to our loved ones.

Below are the five common duas that Muslims recite before journeys, complete with Arabic verse, dua transliteration, source, and explanation.

1. Prayer for Safety When Embarking on Travel

  • Arabic Verse: وَقُل رَّبِّ أَنزِلْنِى مُنزَلًا مُّبَارَكًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْمُنزِلِينَ
  • Dua Transliteration: Rabbi anzilni munzalan mubarokan wa anta khairul munzilin
  • English Translation: My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing-place, and You are the best to accommodate [us].
  • Source: Surah Al Muminun ayat 29

When embarking on travel, this dua is recited to protect oneself from any mishap and to ensure a safe landing. When you recite this dua, you will feel calmer and less anxious about your upcoming trip.

It is always helpful to start a journey by remembering Allah. This prayer is useful to keep with you whenever you are packing for your trip so that you can easily recite it once you leave your home or on the plane.

This prayer asks Allah to protect us when traveling abroad . It also helps us proclaim our faith and affirm the fact that there is no one that can protect us except Allah.

2. Prayer for Safety During the Trip

  • Arabic Verse:
  • English Translation: Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord, we shall return.
  • Source: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14

This excerpt from Surah Az-Zukhruf is a masnoon prayer that thanks Allah for providing us with the means of transportation to make our journey. This dua is short and can be easily memorized so that it becomes a habit to recite it when on a journey.

The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) recited this Surah as dua when he would mount an animal for traveling . He would say Bismillah and then recite this prayer for travel safety . We may be traveling by car, plane, train, or boat; whatever the means of transportation is, it is always important to remember Allah during our journey.

3. Prayer for Traveling to a New Place

  • Arabic Verse:
  • Dua Transliteration: Wa-qul Rabbi Adkhilnee Mudkhala S’idqiw Wa Akhrijnee Mukhraja S’diqiw Waj-a’l Lee Mil Ladunkaa Sult’aanan Nas’eeraa
  • English Translation: O Lord, cause me to enter a goodly entrance and cause me to go out a goodly exit, and grant me from you an authority to assist (me).
  • Source: Sura Al-‘Isra 17:80

The prophet (ﷺ) was in Makkah and had to emigrate to Madinah when Allah revealed this verse. The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) was being attacked by individuals in Makkah and was preparing to enter a new place.

This verse asks for Allah’s protection when taking a big decision and traveling to a new place. This decision could be anything from moving to a new city to even moving to a new home. In this prayer, we are asking Allah to bless our entrance and exit. We are looking for His assistance and blessing while we take this decision.

4. Prayer upon Reaching Destination Safely

  • Arabic Verse: وَقَالَ ارْكَبُواْ فِيهَا بِسْمِ اللّهِ مَجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا إِنَّ رَبِّي لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
  • Dua Transliteration: Va kealarkaboo feehea bismilleahi macreahea va murseahea, inna raabbee la gaafoorun raaheem
  • English Translation: Embark there in! In the name of Allah be its course or its mooring. Lo! My Lord is Forgiving and Merciful!
  • Source: Surah Al-Hud – 11:41

This verse is from Sura Hud, which relays the trials and tribulations of Prophet Noah allehisalam. Prophet Noah was commanded by Allah to create a ship and load it with two creatures (male and female) of every living thing that had a soul.

When the command came to leave on the ship, a strong storm came that brought heavy rainfall. This verse was then revealed at that time and means that the moving course and resting (anchorage) of the ship will be all in Allah’s hands.

This is a specific verse in the Surah and is often used when someone reaches their destination safely. It is a small and short prayer that can be memorized easily when traveling abroad and after you have reached your destination.

  • English Translation: We return, repentant, worshipping, prostrating, and praising our Lord.

This short prayer for travel safety is part of a longer verse that the Holy Prophet would recite upon returning from his journeys. After he came back from a journey, he would say Allah u Akbar three times and then recite this dua.

It is important not to forget Allah once we have returned safely to our homes. Often we only remember Allah when we are starting our journey or when we are in the process of traveling. But we should be grateful to Allah once we return safe and sound.

This dua only has a few words and can be easily learned by heart so that you can recite it quickly once you return home safely after traveling abroad.

Whether we travel by car, train, or airplane, we must recite certain Duas before starting our journey . Of course, we plan ahead of time, but no one is certain how our plan progresses or ends. Let us explore some of the most beneficial as we must recite before and during the journey.

What Does the Holy Quran Say about Travelling?

Holy Quran, the sacred scripture, is the book of wisdom that teaches man the purpose of life and guides Muslims on the right way to lead their lives. The Islamic Holy Book covers all aspects of life and directs Muslims to success in this world and hereafter. According to the Quran, this world is temporary, and human beings are in a constant state of Travel. However, Allah (SWT) also mentions physical travelling several times.

In the Quran, ‘sayyir’ refers to the one who travels. The word sayir literally means to move or travel. Allah (SWT) used this word 27 times in the Quran in several expressions, including “Do Travel,” “Do they not Travel,” and “Tell them to Travel.”

Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? 22:46

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also emphasized travelling. He told the believers that travelling is a great way to expand their horizons and seek knowledge. In one instance, he said

“Keep  to  travelling by night  because the earth is folded (traversed more easily) during the  night .” [Abu Dawud].

Dua Before Travelling

Shariah recommends to off 2 rakaat nawafil before starting travel. It is because the Holy Prophet (PBUH) performed this task before going on any journey. You can get the confirmation of this practice from the following hadith.

Dua Before Travelling

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil. When you enter your home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evil.”

(Musnad Al-Bazzar)

3 – Dua When Visiting A Place For First Time:

Many times, it happens that we travel to a place for the first time, and in our hearts lie many apprehensions associated with the journey. Students travel to different lands for their higher studies, people travel for their jobs knowing as less as nothing about their job environment. Fear of new place and anxiety of meeting new people is very natural in these circumstances. For in travel, there are five benefits: Relief of adversity, earning of livelihood, knowledge, etiquette, and noble companionship. ”  (Imam as-Shafi)

Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has reported that when the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) set out for a journey and mounted on his camel, he would recite the following dua:

Travel Duas - 6 Islamic Duas To Recite When Traveling

Translation :

Glory be to the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our, Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for righteousness and piety in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Successor (the One Who guards them in a person’s absence) over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of heart and from being in a bad predicament, and I seek refuge with You from an ill-fated outcome with regard to wealth and family. – (Narrated by Muslim, 1342)

Can you see, how beautifully Allah has guided His men in every aspect of life? Can you see why Islam is seen as a code of life? It is because of these minute precisions Allah has given to us! The one who has created us has formulated basic codes so that we are not left alone anywhere, and we remind ourselves that Allah is present nearest to us and takes care of our journey. We just need to work on the ethics of travel. We need to recite the days telling Allah that we only put our trust in Him.

Q. Should You Pray Before Traveling?

A. Yes, it is highly recommended to say 2 raka’at nafal prayers before you start your journey. As the Prophet PBUH said:

“When you leave your house, perform two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at and this will safeguard you against evils.”

Similarly, when you come back home after the journey, you should again say 2 raka’at prayer to thank Allah.

Q. Are Duas Accepted When Traveling?

A. The Prophet PBUH has told us about certain times of the day or certain instances in life when the chances of acceptance of prayer are very high. One of these times is when a Muslim is traveling. So if your trip and your dua are both for a good reason, remember Allah during the journey and He will surely remember you.

As the Prophet PBUH said:

Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. [al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih]

Duas For Travelling

Travelling always comes with an unpredictable aspect. Regardless of how much you plan, you will never know how the journey will progress or end. Every year hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives because of vehicular accidents and plane crashes. This is where Islam comes in to protect you. Islam is an amazing religion that teaches us to have faith in Allah (SWT) and live our lives according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

One of the best things about Islam is that we have a dua for almost everything, whether it’s sitting, eating, sleeping, or traveling. While reciting the duas for travelling , a Muslim seeks help from Allah (SWT) to stay safe and protected as He is the only one who can protect us from accidents and dangerous hazards. Keep reading to learn more about the duas for traveling .

What Does Allah Say About Travelling?

travel safe dua

The Holy Quran is the religious book of Islam and is considered the ultimate guide for Muslims. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) describes our life as a journey, with ignorance and knowledge being analogous to the dark and light on the way, respectively.  The Quran has numerous references for Muslims to follow in order to go through a better worldly yet spiritual journey. However, in several places, Allah (SWT) has placed special emphasis on the significance of physical travel.

In the Quran, the word “saiyr” is used to refer to a traveller. The literal meaning of saiyr is to travel or move; for example; the planets are called sayyarah. The term saiyr appears in the Holy Quran 27 times. In most places, it’s used in the formulation of “Tell them to travel,” “Do they not travel,” or “Do travel.”

On the significance of travelling in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Three supplications will not be rejected (by Allah (SWT)), the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the One who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveler. (al-Bayhaqi, at-Tirmidhi – Sahih)

Duas for Travelling in a Car

To protect yourself and your travel companions it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following Surah, with a wish to have a safe and blessed journey:

“With the Name of Allah. Praise is to Allah. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord, we are returning. Praise is to Allah . Praise is to Allah. Praise is to Allah. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to You. O Allah, I have wronged my own soul. Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins but You.” (Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)

In general, having been often mentioned in the Quran, travelling  is a way to achieve insight and wisdom by broadening an individual’s horizons and potential

Duas for Travelling on Plane

Travelling is viewed as a good deed in Islam. this is mainly because in Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Ummah succeeded in spreading Islam through exploration and travelling. The act of travelling also strengthens our belief, aboutwhich Allah (SWT) says in the Quran: “Say (O Muhammad): ‘ Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation.'” (Surah Al-Ankabut, Verse 20)

Therefore, following the Sunnah – acts of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – it is advised that every Muslim should follow the exemplary Adab (etiquette) mentioned below, while travelling out of the city or country:

  • Dua When You Leave the House | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), on the adab of leaving your house for travelling , stated: “When you leave your house, perform two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils. When you return home, perform another two raka’at, and this will safeguard you against evils.” (Hadith reported by Al-Bazzar and al-Bayhaqi)

Furthermore, in “Al-Majmu,” Imam An-Nawawi mentions that while performing the two raka’at , in the first raka’at, one should recite Surah Al-Kafirun after Surah Al-Fatiahah. However, in the second raka’at, one should recite Surah Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatihah.

  • When You Commence Your Journey

For the following verse, Anas bin Malik (RA) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that: “Whoever says upon leaving his house (recites the below-mentioned verses) it will be said to him: ‘You are guided, defended and protected.’ The devil will go far away from him.”

“Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah”

  • Dua When You Arrive at Your Destination | Enter a New Country or City

According to the narration of Suhaib (RA), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would recite the following verse when he looked at the town that he wished to enter:

“Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.”

“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelop, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants, and for all the goodness found within it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants, and from all the evil found within it.”

(Hadith reported by An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim)

  • Dua Upon Entering the Place to Stay (Hotel)

When entering a hotel, people are usually unknown to the history of their place of stay. Therefore, to safeguard themselves from all possible hazards and accidents, it is recommended by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite the following verses:

“I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every evil (that has been created).”

(Hadith reported by Muslim)

Khawalah binte Hakim As-Sulaimiyyah (RA) narrates for the aforementioned verses that she heard Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) saying, “Whoever, on arrival, says (verse mentioned above) no evil shall befall him until he departs from where he arrived.”

  • Dua When Facing Difficulties

There will be several times when travelling when one might feel lost. In such a case, it is advised to perform zikr (remembrance) of Allah (SWT) and istighfar (for forgiveness) for our sins.

In a narration by Abdullah bin Abbas (RA), it is stated that, “Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that if a person constantly makes Istighfar (i.e., “Astaghfirullah”), then Allah removes every difficulty, frees him from every sorrow and makes a means for him to receive sustenance from places that he never thought of.” (Hadith reported by Ahmad)

  • Dua Upon Returning Home | Praying 2 Raka’at of Sunnah

As it is advised to pray two raka’at when leaving for a journey, it is also recommended to pray two raka’at when returning home.  Jabir (RA), in a narration, says that: “I was travelling with the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) When we reached Madinah, He Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to me, “Enter the mosque and pray two raka’at.”

Also, it is recommended to perform the prayer in the same way as the two raka’at prayers before leaving the house.

Duas for Our Parents

muslim man praying during the last 10 nights of ramadan

There is no love more pure and selfless except for the love of your parents. Everyone’s parents love them unconditionally, and regardless of all and worldly reasons. And realistically stating it is nearly impossible for a child to reciprocate that love. Therefore, being Muslims, the best thing that you can do is recite the following duas wishing a happy and blessed life for your parents:

  • Dua for the Happiness of Your Parents:

“RabbiawziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAalawalidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahuwaaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtuilayka wa-innee mina almuslimeen”

“My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work the righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” ( Quran 46:15)

  • Dua for the Long Life of Your Parents:

“Adhhib al-ba’s Rabb an-naas, wa’shfi anta al-Shaafi, laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadir saqaman”

Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5351, Muslim, 2191)

Important Duas for Travelling

Are you preparing for a trip and want to ensure it goes smoothly? Travel is an integral part of our lives, and Islam provides special prayers, called Duas, for protection during journeys.

This article will guide you through important Duas in Islam that are specific for travel, ensuring safety and blessings throughout your journey. Let’s delve into these sacred recitations; they could be the invisible shield you need on your next adventure!

The Importance of Duas When Travelling

Important Duas for Travelling

Duas play an essential role in every journey of a Muslim. Through these prayers, you are committing your trip to Allah SWT for more than just a safe journey. It is about accepting that every step taken, every moment of the journey, and any potential hazards along the way are guided by divine providence.

Duas strengthen your faith by erecting an invisible safety net around you and all accompanying passengers. Before traveling, the Islamic tradition recommends a specific Dua, which encapsulates trust in Allah’s wisdom and surrender to His will.

Specific Duas focus on blessing your transportation means, such as saying ‘Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin…’, thanking Him for providing serviceable vehicles despite our inability to control them ourselves.

This emphasizes gratitude as an essential component of embarking on journeys, remembering that each successful journey is a mercy from Allah SWT.

What Does Allah SWT Say About Travelling?

What Does Allah SWT Say About Travelling

In Islam, travel holds a significant place as Allah SWT encourages exploration of the earth in various verses in the Quran. It is seen as an opportunity for worldly gains and experiences and a means to spiritual growth.

According to Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 20 , Allah SWT states:

قُلْ سِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ بَدَأَ ٱلْخَلْقَ ۚ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ يُنشِئُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ

“Say (O Muhammad), “Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allah will bring it into being one more time. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything.” This statement illustrates that traveling can deepen our understanding of life’s origin and complexity.

In another verse, Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14 , Allah SWT provides specific supplications for safe travels. Muslims are encouraged to recite this Dua before undertaking any journey.

“Glory be to the One Who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own˺. And surely to our Lord, we will ˹all˺ return.”

Many Hadiths describe Prophet Muhammad’s practice of making Dua during his travels to seek protection from unforeseen difficulties, emphasizing the importance of the travel Duas He taught.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH also emphasized travel etiquette, advising against traveling on specific days or dates within each month. This guidance given by Allah SWT and His prophet PBUH for safe and successful travel emphasizes the sacredness attributed to journeying in Islam.

Essential Duas for Travelling

Essential Duas for Travelling

In this section, we will discuss powerful Duas before departure, when entering a vehicle, for protection during travel, and upon reaching your destination. These essential Duas will bring blessings and safety to your journey InshAllah.

Dua Before Departure

Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:

“Whoever says (upon leaving his house): ‘ Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alAllah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah [I begin with the Name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no altering of conditions but by the Power of Allah],’ it will be said to him: ‘ You are guided, defended and protected. ‘ The devil will go far away from him “. Riyad as-Salihin 83 .

The Dua for Departure is the first step in embarking on a journey. This Dua provides protection and blessings for our trip.

Thus, reciting the Dua Before Departure embodies physical and spiritual protection while venturing into the world.

Dua When Entering a Vehicle

Dua When Entering a Vehicle

In a lengthy Hadith, Ibn Umar narrated what the Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to recite when he mounted his camel.

Whenever the Messenger of Allah  (ﷺ) mounted his camel for setting out on a journey, he would recite: “ Allah u Akbar (Allah  is Greatest),” thrice . Then he (ﷺ) would supplicate:

“Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha, wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadh al-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaina safarana hadha, watwi ‘anna bu’dahu. Allahumma Antas-Sahibu fissafari, wal-Khalifatu fil- ahli. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’ta’is-safari, wa kaabatil- manzari, wa su’il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahli wal-waladi”

Translation:

“Far removed from imperfection is the One Who has made this subservient to us, for we have no power to subjugate it, and certainly to our Rubb shall we return. O Allah, we ask You during this journey of ours for righteousness, piety, and such deeds as are pleasing to You. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make the distance short for us. O Allah, You are our Companion during the journey and the Guardian of the family and the property in our absence. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of traveling, unhappiness connected with ghastly scenes, and evil turns in property and family.”

Reference: Riyad as-Salihin 972

This supplication seeks the protection of Allah SWT during your travel time.

However, if you find it difficult to recite this entire Dua, then you can only recite the first part of the Dua, “ Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha, wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun. ”

Your car becomes more than just a mode of transportation; it becomes a personal space where you can maintain your connection with God and express gratitude for His blessings.

Dua for Protection During Travel

Reciting a Dua for protection during travel is highly recommended in Islam. Abu Musa Al Ashari, a companion of the Prophet narrated that:

أن رسول الله كان إذا خاف قوماً قال‏:‏ “‏ اللهم إنا نجعلك في نحورهم ، ونعوذ بك من شرورهم‏”

When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), feared mischief from a people, he would supplicate: “Allahumma inna naj’aluka fi nuhurihim, wa na’udhu bika min shururihim (O Allah! We ask You to face them, and seek Your Protection against their evil.” Riyad as-Salihin 981

It is also recommended to seek Allah SWT’s protection by saying “ Allah-o-Akbar ” (Allah SWT is greatest) and “ Astaghfirullah ” (I seek Allah SWT’s forgiveness). Furthermore, giving donations before and after the journey can bring blessings and protect against harm.

These acts of supplication and seeking Allah SWT’s protection provide comfort and remind us of our reliance on Him throughout our journey.

Dua for Parents Left Behind

When we embark on a journey, it is essential to remember our parents who are left behind. We can pray for their well-being and protection by reciting a special Dua. This Dua is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Isra Verse 24:

رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًۭا

“My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.” 17:24

It expresses our love and concern for our parents and requests Allah SWT’s blessings on them even when we are absent. By making this Dua, we acknowledge the importance of family and their role in our lives.

However, you should not only recite this Dua for your parents when traveling; you should recite it all the time!

Dua Upon Reaching the Destination

“‏ مَنْ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلاً ثُمَّ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ‏.‏ لَمْ يَضُرُّهُ شَىْءٌ حَتَّى يَرْتَحِلَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ ذَلِكَ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

When anyone lands at a place and then says:” I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He has created,” nothing would harm him until he marches from that stopping place. Sahih Muslim 2708a

This Dua will protect you from any harm or negativity that may exist at your destination. It acts as a shield, ensuring nothing bad happens until you leave that place.

So, when you arrive at your destination, remember to recite this Dua and ask Allah SWT for continued guidance and protection in all aspects of your journey.

Dua for Seeing Someone Sick or Suffering During Travel

Dua for Seeing Someone Sick or Suffering During Travel

When we encounter someone who is ill or in pain while traveling, we need to make a Dua for them. We should pray to Allah SWT Almighty for asking for their healing and comfort during this challenging time.

Prophet Muhammad PBUH has informed us about a Dua to recite seven times while visiting a sick person. It is rather short, and requires less than a minute to complete.

“He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times: As’alullahal-‘Azima Rabbal-‘Arshil-‘Azimi, an yashfiyaka (I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you), Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness.” Riyad as-Salihin 906

This Dua not only expresses our compassion and empathy for others, but it also seeks Allah SWT’s blessings to alleviate their pain and suffering. We are expressing our concern for their well-being and requesting divine intervention in their recovery by making this Dua.

As a result, it is critical to remember this special prayer whenever you encounter someone who is ill or in pain while traveling.

Dua Upon Safe Return Home

After a long, tiring, and sometimes difficult journey, expressing gratitude and seeking protection upon safely arriving home is important. Offering a Dua upon safe return is an opportunity to thank Allah SWT for His blessings and seek forgiveness for any mistakes made along the way.

According to a hadith, when Prophet Muhammad PBUH used to return from a journey, he would say:

‏آيبون، تائبون ، عابدون ، لربنا حامدون‏”‏ “

“ Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun ”

(We are returning in safety, turning to our Rubb, worshipping Him and praising Him).” Riyad as-Salihin 987

This Dua serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging Allah SWT’s guidance and recognizing His role in ensuring our safety as we travel. By offering this prayer, we express our gratitude for our successful journey completion and our trust in Allah SWT for future endeavors.

Reciting this Dua also allows us to reflect on our experiences, spiritually growing and appreciating the blessings of being home with our loved ones.

Importance of Duas During Travel

Importance of Duas During Travel

In a hadith, Prophet Muhammad PBUH regarded traveling as torment because it deprives a person of his food, drink, and sleep. Riyad as-Salihin 984

In another hadith a companion of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH narrated that whenever Prophet Muhammad PBUH set forth on a journey, he sought refuge (with Allah SWT) from the hardships of traveling. Sahih Muslim 1343a

Moreover, Prophet Muhammad PBUH has told us in a hadith that the Dua of a traveler is always accepted :

“‏ ثَلاَثُ دَعَوَاتٍ مُسْتَجَابَاتٌ لاَ شَكَّ فِيهِنَّ دَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ وَدَعْوَةُ الْوَالِدِ عَلَى وَلَدِهِ ‏”

“Three supplications are accepted, there is no doubt in them (about them being accepted): The supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of his father against his son.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1905

That’s why when you are on a journey, make Dua as much as you can because there is no doubt it is accepted!

In a long hadith, Ibn Omar narrated what the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, was reading when he rode his camel.

Whenever the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, rode his camel to go on a journey, he would recite: (God is Great)).” three times . Then he (may God bless him and grant him peace) prays:

“Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we were not bound to it, and to our Lord we will return. Oh God, we ask you in this journey of righteousness and piety, and of doing what pleases you. Oh God, make this journey easy for us and prolong it for us. Oh God, you are the companion in the journey.” And the caliph is in the family. Oh God, I seek refuge in You from the troubles of travel, the gloom of the scene, and the bad situation in the family, money, and children.”

"Subhanal-ladhi sakh-khara lana hadha, wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadh al-birra wat-Takwa, and of my work is not delayed. Oh God, make this journey easy for us, and I am lost." Budahu. Oh God, the troubles of the companions of Vesafari, and the caliph in my family. Oh God, I seek refuge in You from the misery of my travels, and the Kaabaatl-Mandhari and the fluctuation of the transfers in the financial, family, and children.”

“Apart from the deficiency that this subjected us to, we have no power over it, and to our Lord we will return. Oh God, we ask you on this journey of righteousness and piety and whatever work you are pleased with. Oh God, make this journey easy for us and close the distance between us. Oh God, you are our companion in the journey.”

Reference: Riyadh Al-Saleheen 972

This dua asks for protection from God Almighty during your travel.

However, if you find it difficult to read this entire dua, you can just read the first part of the dua, “ Glory be to God, Sakh-Khara, for this is ours.” And we were not linked to Him, and indeed, to our Lord we will not turn back. "

Your car has become more than just a means of transportation; It becomes a personal space where you can maintain your connection to God and express gratitude for His blessings.

A prayer for protection while traveling

It is highly recommended to recite a dua for protection while traveling in Islam. On the authority of Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari, one of the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace:

When the Messenger of God feared a people, he would say: “O God, we will put you in their throats and protect you from their evils.”

When the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, feared temptation for a people, he would say: “O God, we put you in their throats and protect you from their evils.” “O God, we ask you to confront them, and we seek refuge in you from their evils.” Riyadh Al-Saleheen 981

It is also recommended to seek refuge in God Almighty by saying: Allah is the greatest "(God is great) and" forgiveness of God" “(I ask forgiveness from God Almighty.) Donations before and after the trip also bring blessing and ward off harm.

Acts of supplication and seeking protection from God Almighty provide us with comfort and remind us of our dependence on Him throughout our journey.

Prayer for lagging parents

When we embark on a journey, it is essential to remember our parents who left us behind. We can pray for their well-being and protection by reciting a special prayer. This supplication was mentioned in the Qur’an in Surah Al-Isra, verse 24:

My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was a child.

“O Lord! Have mercy on them as they raised me when I was little.” 17:24

It expresses our love and care for our parents and we ask God Almighty to bless them even in our absence. By performing this supplication, we realize the importance of family and its role in our lives.

However, you should not only recite this supplication to your parents when traveling; You should read it all the time!

Supplication upon arrival at the destination

“Whoever stays at one place and then says, I seek refuge in the perfect words of God from the evil of what He has created, nothing will harm him until he departs from that place of his.”

No one who descends and says: I seek refuge in the perfect words of God from the evil of what He has created will not be harmed by anything until he departs from this stopping place. Sahih Muslim 2708a

This dua will protect you from any harm or negativity that may be present at your destination. It acts as a shield, ensuring that nothing bad will happen until you leave that place.

So, when you reach your destination, remember to recite this dua and ask God Almighty to constantly guide and protect you in all aspects of your journey.

A supplication to see the sick or injured person while traveling

Supplication of seeing someone sick or suffering while traveling

When we encounter someone who is sick or in pain while traveling, we need to pray for them. We must pray to God Almighty to grant them healing and comfort during this difficult time.

The Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, told us about a supplication seven times When visiting a patient. It's fairly short, requiring less than a minute to complete.

“Whoever visits a sick person who is not on the brink of death, then says seven times: Praying for God - Great Lord - Arshil - Azmi, may he heal you (I ask God Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, to heal you. God will heal him from that disease). Riyadh Al-Saleheen 906

This supplication not only expresses our sympathy and compassion for others, but also seeks the blessings of God Almighty to alleviate their pain and suffering. We express our concern for their well-being and ask for divine intervention in their recovery through this prayer.

As a result, it is important to remember this special prayer when you encounter someone who is sick or in pain while traveling.

Praying for a safe return home

After a long, tiring and sometimes difficult journey, it is important to express gratitude and ask for protection when arriving safely home. Praying upon safe return is an opportunity to thank God Almighty for His blessings and seek forgiveness for any mistakes made along the way.

In the hadith, when the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, returned from a trip, he would say:

Ibon, repentant, worshipers, praising our Lord.”

" Ebona, be kind to us, be our servants, praise be to our Lord "

(We will return in safety to our Lord, whom we worship and praise).” Riyadh Al-Saleheen 987

This supplication serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging the guidance of God Almighty and acknowledging His role in ensuring our safety during our travel. By offering this prayer, we express our gratitude for the successful completion of our journey and our trust in God Almighty for future endeavours.

Reciting this prayer also allows us to reflect on our experiences, grow spiritually, and appreciate the blessings of returning home with our loved ones.

The importance of supplications while traveling

The importance of supplications while traveling

In the hadith, the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, considered travel a punishment because it deprives a person of his food, drink, and sleep. Riyadh Al-Saleheen 984

In another hadith, on the authority of one of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, he said that whenever the Prophet Muhammad, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, went out on a journey, he would seek refuge from the misfortunes of travel. Sahih Muslim 1343a

Moreover, the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, told us in a hadith that The traveler's prayers are always answered :

“There are three supplications that are undoubtedly answered: the supplication of an oppressed person, the supplication of a traveler, and the supplication of a father for his child.”

“Three supplications are undoubtedly answered: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of his father against his son.” Al-Tirmidhi Mosque 1905

This is why when you are on a trip, pray as much as you can because it is undoubtedly acceptable!

Procedures for reading travel prayers

To ensure a safe and blessed trip, follow these procedures when reading travel prayers:

  • When reciting supplications, face the Qibla or the direction towards Mecca (if possible).
  • Raise your hands in front of your face, with the palms open, as this is the correct position for supplication.
  • Start your supplication by praising and glorifying God Almighty with phrases such as “Glory be to God” (Glory be to God) and “Praise be to God” (Praise be to God Almighty).
  • Pray for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
  • Ask forgiveness for any sins you have committed and pray to God Almighty to have mercy on you and guide you on your journey.
  • Read specific supplications for each stage of travel (as described above).

The role of travel in Islam

The role of travel in Islam

Travel has an important role in Islam, as it includes both the physical and spiritual aspects. It is promoted as a way to seek God's blessings and protection. Muslims can explore the world, learn about different cultures and strengthen their faith by embarking on journeys.

Individuals can witness first-hand God Almighty's creation and appreciate His limitless power through travel. They can also conduct religious research by visiting holy places such as Mecca for Hajj and Umrah.

Travel also allows Muslims to spread the message of Islam to new communities and promote interfaith dialogue.

Furthermore, travel allows for self-reflection and personal growth. It allows people to disconnect from their daily routine and immerse themselves in new environments that may inspire spiritual enlightenment.

Along with prayers dedicated to each stage of the journey, reciting verses from the Qur’an provides strength and protection while travelling.

To sum it up, travel is essential in Islam as it promotes exploration, education, spirituality and spreading the message of peace across various regions.

Travel supplications (common phrases, not hadiths)

The supplications mentioned below are not taken from any hadith; They are just common expressions of praise to God Almighty and asking Him for goodness.

  • Start your journey by praying: “Oh God, make this journey easy for me and grant me your blessings.”
  • While traveling, seek refuge by reading: "I seek refuge in perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created".
  • Pray for the parents you left behind by saying: “Oh God, protect my parents and protect them in my absence.”
  • When you arrive at your destination, express gratitude to God by reciting: "O God, thank you for a safe journey. May this place bring blessings and fulfillment."
  • When staying in a new place, pray for guidance and ease by saying: “O God, bless this place for me and make it a source of peace and reassurance for me.”
  • If you meet someone who is sick or suffering while you are travelling, pray for their well-being: “O God, grant healing and comfort to those who are sick or suffering.”
  • When you encounter any problems during your journey, seek help from God Almighty by saying: “O God, guide me through these difficulties and strengthen me to overcome them.”
  • After you return home safely, express your gratitude to God Almighty by reciting: “O God, thank you for bringing me back safely. I am grateful for the blessings of this journey.”
  • Finally, after a safe trip, close with a prayer of gratitude: “God, I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities you have given me during this journey.”

These essential travel prayers provide us with protection and guidance on our journeys. We ask God Almighty to ensure our safety throughout the journey by reciting these supplications.

Including these supplications in our travel routine will provide peace of mind and strengthen our relationship with God Almighty. Remember to turn to Him every step of our journey, knowing that He always hears and answers our prayers.

Dua For Travelling

One of the best things about Islam is that we have dua almost everything. From eating, sitting, sleeping, and even traveling. There can be many benefits for us to reciting duas.

Benefits Of Dua For Travelling

Whenever a Muslim travels or steps out of the home for a journey, whether it is a short distance or long distance traveling, we recite some duas. So we can have a safe journey and receive the blessings of Almighty Allah.

  • If a person recites dua for traveling, then the Angels protect you while you get back home.
  • Reciting dua when traveling can save an individual from incidents that one has never imagined.
  • By reciting dua, a person is more likely to perform good deeds and have a positive day ahead.
  • Allah grants the traveler ease in his journey.
  • Reciting duas leads to blessings from Allah.

Hundreds of thousands of people usually die because of traffic accidents in bikes, cars, planes, etc., all across the world, so traveling can be quite fatal. As we grew up, we heard about a lot of plane crashes and other dangerous events. So we need to seek help from Allah to stay protected and safe, and he is the only one who can protect us from dangerous hazards and accidents.

We must also try our best to minimize our traveling unless it is necessary or urgent as Muslims. We need to recite duas more often so we can stay blessed and safe from the curse of shaitan at the same time.

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

Posted by Ahmed Abdulla | Duas

Dua For Safar (Supplication For The Travelling)

What does Safar mean?

Safar  (سفر) is an Arabic term which refers to travelling, going on a journey, or transportation. It is also the second Islamic month of the lunar calendar and the month where Muslims used to vacate their homes to gather food.

According to hadith and the sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ) there are a number of duas one can recite for safar / travelling / going on a journey and we will cover them all in this one article.  Theses can be used for any method of transport whether by airplane, car, or boat.

Supplication For Travelling

Safar ki dua

In short, this hadith teaches to say the following:

  • (Bismillah) [three times]
  • Alhamdulillah
  • Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun (Also referenced in  Surah Zukhruf ayat 13-14)
  • Alhamdulillah and Allahuakbar [three times]
  • Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant

The Full hadith is given below from Jami At-Tirmidhi, Vol. 6, Book of Supplications, Hadith 3446 Ali bin Rabi’ah said:

“I witnessed Ali having an animal brought to him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup he said: ‘In the Name of Allah,’ (Bismillah) [three times]. So then, once he had ascended upon its back, he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ (Al-Hamdulillah) then he said: Glory is to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we were not able to do it. And, surely, to our Lord are we returning (Subhan Alladhi Sakh-khara Lana Hadha Wa Ma Kunna Lahu Muqrinin. Wa Inna Ila Rabbina Lamunqalibun). Then he said: ‘All praise is due to Allah (Al-Hamdulillah)’ – three times – and ‘Allah is the Greatest (Allahu Akbar)’ – three times – ‘Glory is to You, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for indeed none forgives sins except You (Subhanaka Inni Qad Zalamtu Nafsi Faghfirli Fa-Innahu La Yaghfirudh-Dhunuba Illa Ant).’ Then he laughed. So I said: ‘O Commander of the Believer! What caused you to laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah do as I did, then he ﷺ laughed, so I said, ‘What cause you to laugh?’ He said: ‘Indeed, your Lord if very pleased with His worshipper when he says: “O my Lord, forgive me my sins, indeed, no one other than You forgives sins.”

Invocation For Traveler

Transliteration: Bismiallahi wa alhamdu liallahi. Subhanaalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.

Translation: In the name of Allah, and Praise be to Allah. Glory be to the one who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord we will surely return.

Dua Upon Reaching Destination

Transliteration: Allhum rab alsamawat alsbʿ wama aẓlun wa-rab alarḍyn alsbʿ wama aqlun warab alshayaṭyn wama aḍlun warab alryaḥ wama duhryn finna nasalak khayr hudh alqarya wkhyr ahlha wanʿwdh baka mn shrha washr ahlha washr ma fyha.

Translation: “O Allah, You are the Lord of the seven skies and all the things that are under these skies and the seven planets and whatever is over these and of Satan who misled and all those misled by him and for the wind and all that it blows. Thus we seek the good of this town and the good of its members (people) and seek refuge from its evil and the evil of its members and from the evils of whatever is in it”. (Hisnul Hasin from Ibn Habban)

Another Dua:

أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق

A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa

Khaulah bint Hakim (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Whosoever alights somewhere and says: ‘A’udhu bikalimat-illahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He has created),’ nothing will harm him until he leaves that place.” [Muslim] Riyad As Salihin. Arabic/English book reference : Book 8, Hadith 982

Other Hadiths About Safar and Safe Journey

The duas for safar covered this far are the most well known or common duas for journey. The rest of the article will focus on advice from Prophet Muhammad ( ﷺ ) regarding a safe travel and other Islamic traditions.

It’s Better To Travel With Others:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night.”. In another narration, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group.” 1

This was more applicable and good advice back during the Prophet’s time as travelling was far more treacherous at night especially if going alone. Today travelling at night is safer but you will not be as alert as you would when you first wake. Going on safar with group you’ll be less likely to make mistakes or be taken advantage of.

When Ascending To Heights (Going on Plane)

Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) and his army ascended a height, they would proclaim: “Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest),” and when they climbed down, they would proclaim: “Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection).” 2

Shortened Prayer While Vacationing:

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) once stayed for nineteen days and prayed shortened prayers. So when we travel led (and stayed) for nineteen days, we used to shorten the prayer but if we traveled (and stayed) for a longer period we used to offer the full prayer. 3

In Islam, We have been taught by the Quran and Hadith to start every activity with a specific dua .

It’s talking to Allah through a dua or prayer, is like having a heart-to-heart with a friend who always guides and helps. It’s like starting a task with a secret weapon that ensures smooth success.

Each dua is not just a call for help but also a way of worshipping Allah and we get its benefit on the Day of Judgment (roz-e-Qiamat). So, a dua is beneficial for Muslims in their life on this planet and for life after death.

In Islam, there are specific duas or prayers, suggested for nearly every action we take, including unique prayers for travelling safely . These special prayers, known as travelling duas , are like our companions on every journey. Reciting these duas doesn’t just make the ride smoother, but it also fills your spiritual backpack with blessings for this world and the next.

How to Recite Traveling Dua?

Performing a Dua, or prayer, in Islam doesn’t need any special preparations like wudu (ablution), usually done before prayers. However, as a Muslim, it is better to always remain neat and clean, including when you’re travelling.

Starting your journey? It’s an ideal time to offer your Dua for travelling .  There is a set pattern for offering a Dua in Islam. It includes:

  • Start with the name of Allah (S.W.T.)
  • Recite the specific dua for that particular need
  • End with durud (sending peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad  ﷺ)

Remember, you can always recite the travelling dua straightaway if you prefer. This isn’t a strict rule, just a way to make your journey more blessed.

O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family. Whether before or during their travels—and whether by airplane, car, boat or other transportation—Muslims ask Allah to protect them on their journeys and get them back home safely to their families.

Going on holiday? Here are 11 duas that will protect you throughout your travels

travel safe dua

Regular travel is highly encouraged in Islam. The Qur’an states:

It is He who has made the earth manageable for you––travel its regions; eat His provision- and to Him you will be resurrected.” Advertise on TMV [67:15]

Islam doesn’t encourage a sedentary lifestyle. Travelling is a way for us to appreciate God’s earth. Some regions are hot, others cold. Some places are mountainous, whilst others are by the sea. The earth has a lot to offer. Travelling – from planning, travelling itself and adjusting to new surroundings is good for personal development and affords time away from our routine to reflect on creation and unwind.

The majority of verses in the Holy Quran concerning travelling mention travelling to see how previous disbelieving nations and communities:

Say, ‘Travel throughout the earth and see what fate befell those who rejected the truth.’” [6:11]

Even today, we can visit areas of the earth and see the remaining ruins of past generations.

Whatever your reason for travelling, it’s important to be safe. And that’s where Islam has plentiful duas to recite for travelling. We have duas for different scenarios and stages of travelling. Here are 11.

Duas Before Starting the Journey

When we plan to travel, we want the entire experience to be as pleasant as possible. Before we leave our place of residence to travel, there are two duas we can recite, seeking Allah’s blessings for the journey.

Allahumma inna nas-aluka fi safarina haza-l-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tardho. Allahumma hawwin ‘alaina safarana haza, watwi ‘anna bu’dahu, Allahumma antas-sohibu fis-safar wal-khalifatu fil-ahli. Allahumma inni a-‘uzu bika min wa’atha-is-safar, wa kabbati-manzar, wa su-i-lmunqalabi fil-mal wal-ahli.

O Allah, we ask You in our travel for righteousness, taqwa, and good deeds that You are pleased with. O Allah make our travel an ease, and shorten the distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the guardian of our family (in our absence). O Allah I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, a sight of grief, and from an unfortunate occurance in wealth and family.”

In the name of Allah! I have placed faith in Allah and I have put full trust in Allah. (It is) as Allah wills! There is no strength and no power save with Allah. O Allah! Protect me and protect what is with me (my possessions), and deliver me (to my destination and delivery what is with me the best of your delivery. By Allah I commence (my journey) and by Allah I seek to accomplish (the purpose of my journey) and by Muhammad (s.a.w.) I have set out (towards my destination). Oh Allah make me overcome all (my grief); and make easy for me all difficulties; and give me more of goodness than I hope for; and keep away all evil of which I am apprehensive for my health. O the most Merciful.”

Duas When Boarding A Vehicle

When boarding your vehicle for travel – be it a car, plane or ship – it’s important to thank Allah (SWT) for giving us the means to travel and confessing our total reliance on Him in completing the journey safely. The following three duas reflect these sentiments.

Subhanal-ladzi sakh-khara lana hadza wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamun-qalibun.

In the name of Allah and all praise is for Allah. How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny.”

Bismillahi walaa quwwata illa billahi. Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee sakh-khara lana haadha wama kaunna lahu muqrineen.

In the name of Allah, and there is no power save with Allah. Praise be to Allah who made this (the means of transport) subservient to us, and we (by ourselves) could never have accomplished it.”

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee hadaana lil-islam wa allamanal quran wa manna alayna bi muhammadin sallallhu alayhi wa aalihi. Subhanal-ladhee sakh-khara lana haadha wama kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna illa rabbina lamuqaliboon. Walhamdu lillahi rabbil aalameen. Allahumma antal haamilu aladhdhahr walmusta`anu alal-amr. Wa antas-sahibu fis-sfar wal khaleefatu fil-ahli wal-maali wal-walad. Allahumma anta adhdee wa naasiree.

All praise is for Allah Who guided us in Islam and taught us the Quran and graced us with Muhammad (s.a.w.). Glory be to Allah Who made this (the means of transport) subservient to us, and we (by ourselves) could never have accomplished it. And surely to our Lord we shall return. All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. `O` Allah! You are the Facilitator of the journey and the helper in the affair and you are the Companion in the journey, and the Successor (incharge of my) family, property and son. `O` Allah! You are my supporter and my Helper to Victory.” Advertise on TMV

Duas For When We Reach our Destination

The following can be recited as we enter the borders of a new country, town or city:

Allahumma innee as-aluka khairaha wa a`oodhu bika min sharriha. Allahumma habbibna ilaa ahliha wa habbib saalihi ahliha ilayna.

Oh, Allah! I beseech from you its (town, city or village) goodness and seek refuge in you from its wickedness. Oh Allah! let its inhabitants love us, and let us love its virtuous inhabitants.”

And here is another:

Allahumma rabbas samawatis sab’i wa ma azlalna, wa rabbal ardinas sab’i wa ma aqlalna, wa rabbash-shayatini wa ma adlalna, wa rabbar riyahi wa ma zaraina, as’aluka khaira hadzihil qaryah wa khaira ahliha, wa khaira ma fiha, wa a’udzubika min sharriha wa sharri ahliha, wa sharri ma fiha.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all that they envelope, Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, Lord of the devils and all whom they misguide, Lord of the winds and all whom they whisk away. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its inhabitants and for all the goodness found within it and I take refuge with You from the evil of this village, the evil of its inhabitants and from all the evil found within it.”

When we actually get to our hotel or place of residence and leave our car or when we disembark the ship or plane, we can say the following:

Rabbee anzilnee manzilan mubarakan wa anta khairul-munzileen.

O, My Lord! Cause me to disembark a blessed alighting, and you are the Best of all who cause to alight.”

Another dua to recite specifically for when we enter our place of residence:

A’uzu bikalimatillahit-tammati min syarri ma khalaq.

I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what is created.”

Dua for Travelling by Ship

If you’re going on a cruise holiday or a ferry, there’s a specific dua you can recite for it:

Bismillahil malikil haq. Wama qadarullahahaqqa qadarihi wal ardhu jamee`an qabdhatuhu yaumall qiyamati was-sawamatu matwiyyatun biyameenihi subhaanahu wata`ala amma yshrikoon. Bismillahi majraha wa mursaha inna rabbee laghafoorun raheemen.

In the name of Allah! The Master! The Truth! They esteemed not Allah with an esteem due to Him. The whole earth is under His hold on the day of resurrection and the heavens folded at His command. Glory be to him and the High above! He is beyond the attribution of any partner. In the name of Allah be its course (sailing) and its arrival (anchorage). Verily my Lord is All Forgiving, All Merciful.”

Duas for Returning Home

When we are returning home, we can recite the same duas mentioned above. For example, you can recite the same dua when entering your car to go to the airport or as you leave your hotel. In addition, you can recite the following, which is specifically for returning home.

Aa-iboona taa-iboona insha allah aabi doona raki`oona saajidoona lirabbina haamidoon. Allahumma lakal hamdu ala hifdhika iyyaya fee safaree wa hadharee. Allahummaj`al aubatee haadhihi mubarakatan maimoonatan maqroonatan be taubatin nasoohin toojablee bihas-sa`adah ya arhamar-rahimeen.

If Allah wills, we repent and seek pardon from Him; we worship Him and Him we bow and prostrate. Our Lord we praise. O Allah! Make this return (journey) of mine a blessed one, a fruitful one, associated with a sincere repentance; one that will make prosperity incumbent for me. Oh Most Merciful.”

O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.1 [O Allah, make for me a light in my grave... and a light in my bones.](At-Tirmithi 5/483 (Hadith no. 3419).) [Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light .](Al-Bukhari in Al-'Adab Al-Mufrad (Hadith no. 695), p. 258. See also Al-Albani, Sahih Al-'Adab Al-Mufrad(no. 536).) In the name of Allah we enter and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.

O Allah! Behold I ask You the good through Your Knowledge, and ability through Your Power, and beg (Your favor) out of Your infinite Bounty. For surely You have Power; I have none. You know all; I know not. You are the Great Knower of all things.  O Allah! If in Your Knowledge this matter be good for my faith (Deen), for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me therein. But if in Your Knowledge, this matter be bad for my faith (Deen), for my livelihood, and for the consequences of my affairs, then turn it away from me, and turn me away there from, and ordain for me the good wherever it be, and cause me to be pleased therewith.

The muslim traveler's guide to packing for a trip.

Traveling can be one of the most exhilarating and liberating experiences in life. You get to explore new places, have unique experiences, and make lasting memories with friends and family. But to any Muslim traveler, there is an additional layer of spiritual appreciation around it; something that turns a regular vacation into somewhat of a pilgrimage — the power of prayer! It’s believed by many people across the world that reciting certain supplications (known as Duas) for traveling helps bring protection and peace on your journey. Here we will look at some of these traveling prayers for Muslims, what they mean in Arabic, how you can use them when traveling, and other useful tips to help you stay safe wherever you go.

The importance of Dua for traveling

Duas (or supplications) are a powerful form of spiritual communication, as they allow us to communicate directly with Allah and ask for His protection, guidance, and grace. When it comes to traveling in particular, there are tons of authentic narrations from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), that teaches the importance of saying certain Duas whenever someone embarks on a journey. The most famous Dua for travel is known as “Dua al-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”.

This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out or even when you arrive to your destination.

Travel essentials for Muslim travelers

Apart from the spiritual tools of prayer, there are also some key material items that all Muslim travelers should bring with them on their journeys. These include:

– A Quran and/or an Islamic book ; this is particularly important if traveling abroad and encountering a new culture.

-Headscarves and long clothes such as abayas or hijab(s) can be useful for those observing traditional modesty.

– Islamic books or audio lectures that contain Islamic knowledge relevant to the situation, such as understanding cultural norms in other countries or how to deal with a difficult travel experience.

– An Islamic compass that can help with finding the direction of qibla (the direction to face when praying) no matter where you are.

– Miswak – a natural toothbrush found in some Islamic countries, it is considered Sunnah (recommended practice) to use it while traveling.

– Prayer beads or tasbihs – these are particularly useful for dhikr and reciting Duas throughout your journey.

These items will not only provide spiritual support during your travels but also provide practical guidance on how to observe Islamic etiquette both at home and abroad.

What to say in a dua for traveling

سبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ. Quran Verse Travel Duaa
Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun. Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return. Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14 Travel Duaa

How to say a Dua for travelling

When reciting Duas for travel, there are some tips to keep in mind:

-Start by making a sincere intention of your journey and its purpose.

-Recite the Dua calmly and with humility, remembering that Allah is All-Knowing and always listening.

-Look for times when you may be feeling especially vulnerable or anxious while traveling, such as during long flights or in unfamiliar places, and recite the Dua at those moments.

-Remember to ask Allah for His guidance throughout the journey, asking Him to help you stay on track spiritually.

-If possible, try to read Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) before embarking on any journey. This is a powerful Dua that promises protection, safety, and success during the journey.

-Always be mindful of Allah’s presence in your travels, regardless of where you are or what challenges come your way.

The best time to recite a dua for traveling

The best time to recite a Dua for travel is just before setting out on the journey. This will ensure that you begin your travels with blessings and protection from Allah, as well as help focus your thoughts and intentions so that they remain in line with His guidance throughout the journey. Additionally, it is a good idea to recite any special Duas or prayers you may have learned while traveling, such as “l-Safar” or “The Traveler’s Prayer”. This special prayer will not only help bring you safety during your trip, but will also provide you an extra shield of mental peace while you travel and explore new places. It can be recited anytime during your journey, before setting out, or before going to sleep.

The blessings of making a dua for traveling

Making a Dua for travel is an excellent way to ensure that your travels are blessed and protected. By asking Allah for His guidance, mercy, and protection, we can rest assured that He will provide us with the strength and courage to persevere throughout our journey. Ultimately, making a Dua for travel can help increase our faith in Allah as well as bring peace of mind knowing that He always has our back.

What to do if your journey is interrupted

If your journey is interrupted or delayed due to any unforeseen circumstances, it is important to stay patient and remember that Allah has a plan for you. During these times, it is beneficial to recite the Dua for travel again, as well as make supplications asking Him for guidance and ease in the situation. Additionally, you can also seek refuge with Him by reading Surah Al-Kafirun (The Disbelievers) and other prayers of protection. Finally, try to maintain a positive attitude during these difficult periods – knowing that Allah will provide you with what’s best in His perfect timing.

Travel Dua & Best Practices

travel dua and best practices

Islam is a beautiful religion that gives a perfect guide to a way of life for all humans. As Muslims, every aspect of our lives has been arranged to our benefit, and we have been given everything that we need to live the best lives on Earth.

One of the beauties of Islam that many of us may take for granted is the fact that we have a dua for everything. From putting on your clothes to eating to traveling, every one of our actions can be a means of worshipping Allah (ta’ala) and earning rewards.

Whenever a Muslim sets out on a journey, we are encouraged to say some duas for our protection and safe return. This is the dua that the Messenger of Allah( ﷺ ) used to make whenever he traveled.

Dua of Travelling

“Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is-safari, wa kabatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba’dal-kawri, wa da’watil-mazlumi, wa suw’il-munzari fil-ahli wal-mal”

“(O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel and the sorrows of return, from loss after plenty, from the supplication of the one who has been wronged, and seeing some calamity befall my family or wealth.)” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

We are encouraged to memorize the dua and recite it for every travel.

Best Practices for Travelling

Beyond the dua, it is important for a Muslim who seeks the protection of Allah (ta’ala) in their journey, to also keep within the limits laid down by Islam. These may be in terms of our mode of transport, Salah, or even meeting new people.

Stay Away from Fasting

The traveling person is exempted from fasting, according to a hadith narration which says

“I was traveling and I came to the Prophet when he was eating and I was fasting. He said: ‘Come and eat.’ I said: ‘I am fasting.’ He said: ‘Do you know what Allah has waived for the traveler?’ he said: ‘Do you know what Allah has waived for the traveler?’ I said: ‘What has Allah waived for the traveler?’ He said: ‘Fasting and half of the prayer.’” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

He (ﷺ) also said: “It is not righteousness to fast when traveling. Take to the concession which Allah, the mighty and sublime, has granted you, accept it.” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

This doesn’t mean that one is forbidden from fasting, however. Because in another narration, the Messenger of Allah was quoted to have said: “If you wish to fast then fast, and if you wish not to fast then do not fast.” ( Sunan an-Nasa’i )

Supplicate While Travelling

Apart from the dua of traveling, it is also encouraged to make dua while on the journey because the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “ Three supplications are answered, there being no doubt about them; that of a father, that of a traveler and that of one who has been wronged.” ( Sunan Abi Dawud )

Shorten Salah

As a traveler, a Muslim is permitted to shorten his Salah while on a journey. So, salahs like Zuhr and Asr with four rakats each becomes two rakats each. It is also permissible to combine two salahs, i.e praying Zuhr and Asr at the time of Zuhr, etc.

Aisha (RA) narrated that “The prayer was prescribed as consisting of two rak’ahs both when one was resident and when traveling. The prayer while traveling was left according to the original prescription and the prayer of one who was resident was enhanced.” ( Sunan Abi Dawud )

Travel with a Mahram

This is a traveling etiquette, particularly for Muslim women. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A woman should not travel for more than three days except with a Dhi-Mahram.” ( Bukhari )

Even though many people do not take to this rule these days, we should always remember that it is proper traveling etiquette for a Muslim woman to travel accompanied by a male relative that is deemed unmarriageable for her in Islam. (Remember this is not compulsory or obligatory at all for a Muslim woman to travel with a mahram).

The dua for traveling is just one of many duas that we have as Muslims, and like all other duas, it is beneficial and rewarding for us when we make us of it.

Travel smart, travel safe: 15 safety essentials for solo travelers, plus tips from experts

travel safe dua

Solo travel tips | Expert-approved products | More for your travels | How we chose | Meet our experts

Safety is always top of mind when exploring an unfamiliar place. It’s even more of a priority for solo travelers who don’t have the assumed safety that comes with numbers. But with the right tools, solo travelers can visit all of the destinations on their bucket list with peace of mind.

We spoke to travel experts who gave their tips for traveling on your own and even highlighted the best products to get you ready for your next adventure.

What to consider when solo traveling

Solo traveling can be intimidating, especially for newbies. Many people have a fear of sticking out as a tourist and getting lost in an unfamiliar area.

Our experts say that’s all a part of the experience.

“I don’t think there’s much use in trying not to stick out as you inevitably will unless you’re really comfortable with a place, speak the language, know all the local customs, etc...” travel content creator Anela Malik says.

Experts suggest taking the following safety precautions to make sure you have the best experience.

Always have an eye in the sky

While it may seem simple, sharing your location with friends goes a long way in solo travel. This can help give you (and your family back home) peace of mind as you explore the unknown.

Be sure to share your plans with your close circle. Sharing your itineraries with trusted people lets them know when you’ll be busy and when you plan to call it quits for the night.

“Folks have to know where you’re supposed to be to have any idea of where to start looking if you get off track,” Malik says. “I share my itineraries for trips in advance with my mom and friends so that if something happens and I’m just not on track — maybe I’m hurt or maybe I never showed up to my hotel — folks know where to start digging.”

Skip the real-time updates

While it’s tempting to show everyone what you're doing as you're doing it, save the social media posts for later. Alerting everyone on the internet that you’re away from home may make you vulnerable to robbery. Also, sharing your itinerary with anyone and everyone can allow people you know — and don’t know — to track you throughout your trip.

Our experts say another red flag is going live on social media when solo traveling. Malik says sharing your active location with the world can be dangerous because anyone the ability to follow you as you explore.

You may want to share your experiences but remember, social media is not just your trusted friends. It can be accessed by virtually anyone.

Budget for safety

While you may be tempted to save instead of splurge, remember safety comes first. When traveling alone, it’s better to spend a little more and book accommodations or transportation that ensure your safety.

“That might mean allowing a bit of extra money in the transit budget so you don’t have to walk in the dark or booking a hotel in a safer and slightly more expensive area if possible,” Malik says.

Solo travel without truly being “solo”

Making friends along the way not only makes you feel safer but also makes for a fulfilling trip, according to travel blogger Erin Holmes.

“It’s so fun to make friends as you travel and numbers reinforce safety,” she shares.

Do your research

Research online, read books and ask other travelers about any local crime concerns and safety tips for the places you plan to visit.

Our experts advise every U.S. citizen traveling abroad to register with The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program , also known as STEP, before every trip.

The program allows any U.S. citizen traveling or living abroad to register their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to their destination.

This program is run by the State Department and provides safety updates when visiting a country. It also ensures the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in that country has your contact information in case of emergency.

Be mindful of what you pack

Holmes tells travelers to be mindful of what they bring with them as carrying items like large cameras and expensive jewelry can make you more susceptible to scams or theft.

However, one piece of jewelry is vital to slide into your carry-on before you take off: a wedding ring.

According to Harvard Global Support Services , women perceived to be wives and mothers are less likely to be harassed in many countries. So they recommend wearing a wedding band on your finger and even sharing stories of a significant other back home — even if it's all fake.

While it may seem antiquated, seeming to be married or partnered may protect women solo travelers from potential gender-based violence .

Reviewers and travelers alike praise this product for its quality and durability.

"This started as my 'burner' ring for travel and intense activities, but I like it so much that I might just use it as my wedding band," one reviewer wrote. "It’s been in all different waters, beat up and worn for weeks and still has yet to tarnish. I also have very sensitive skin and have had no reaction whatsoever."

Life360 Platinum Membership

Life360 Logo

Platinum Membership

  • Real-time updates
  • Emergency contact features
  • Free plan has restrictions

Holmes recommends Life360 to every solo traveler. The platinum membership plan features an SOS help alert and crash detection.

The plan also includes 50 miles of free towing if your car breaks down, a $500 stolen phone protection plan and the Tile starter pack to track all of your items.

"There is something very comforting about having someone know your whereabouts at all times," Holmes says. "It also acts as an emergency app and can let all parties know the percentage of your phone battery."

Birdie Personal Safety Alarm

Personal Safety Alarm

  • Can distract an assaulter
  • Draws attention
  • Can accidentally go off

Malik suggests solo travelers pick up a sound alarm before their next trip and this one is a personal favorite of hers.

"I also use and recommend a sound alarm like the Birdie Personal Safety Alarm," she says. "It’s small, will attract attention if you need to in an unsafe situation and you don’t have to worry about the legality of it like some other personal protection products."

  • Keeps valuables close to you
  • Bold, unique print

Looking for a more fashionable way to keep your items safe? This scarf is large enough to hold money and other valuable items. "This can hide all your documents without you sticking out like a sore thumb with a backpack," Holmes says.

The brand says it's even perfect for warm weather, too, with rayon fabric that's cool to the touch and protects your skin from the sun.

Pacsafe GO Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag

GO Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag

GO Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag

  • Lightweight
  • Anti-theft technology
  • Depth could be increased

A crossbody bag is Holmes' go-to for keeping documents safe when on the move.

Pacsafe's anti-theft crossbody has securable zippers and cut-resistant materials so you can walk around confidently knowing your items are secure. It even has a RFID-blocking pocket so your passport and credit card information are safe.

"Split things up. Keep originals in the safe at the hotel and copies in your suitcase and handbag, as well as digital copies on your phone and laptop," Holmes advises. "This also goes for credit cards. One in the handbag, one hidden in socks or somewhere in your suitcase."

Uber $100 Gift Card

Uber $100 Gift Card

  • Works on Uber and Uber Eats
  • Not a universal gift card

Our experts suggest solo travelers pay for Ubers or taxis instead of walking alone at night. This gift card will ensure you have enough in the budget to make that happen. An Uber gift card is also a great gift for the solo traveler in your life.

If you’re looking for something smaller to hold your valuables, these scrunchies are an ideal solution. This multifunctional accessory also gives you the ability to stash some cash in a discreet place.

“I took it when I went on vacation abroad. Had Chapstick and some emergency cash and, ironically, some hair ties in it. It wasn’t bulky or obvious,” one reviewer shared. “It made me feel much more secure. If I lost my phone or purse, I still had cash for a cab.”

Door Stop Alarm with 120DB Siren

Door Stop Alarm with 120DB Siren

  • Works well in hotel rooms
  • Battery not included

TikTok has labeled this product “the thing they never knew they needed” for travel. The (very loud) siren goes off if someone tries to open the door. But don’t worry, it has an on and off switch so it won’t go off while you’re in transit.

“As a flight attendant who spends a lot of time in hotels, I use this as an alarm to put in front of the door inside my room,” one Amazon reviewer wrote. “There have been so many stories I’ve heard of people opening other people’s hotel rooms, and I wanted something loud and annoying that’s going to alert me right away as soon as it’s cracked. It’s perfect.”

Portable Door Lock

Portable Door Lock

  • Doesn't require tools
  • May not fit cruise cabin doors

This TikTok-viral portable door lock is an easy way to add an extra layer of protection in hotel rooms or Airbnbs. But be mindful that while this lock is not a weapon, it may be flagged in an airport security screening.

“The quality of this product is excellent. I’ve used it several times in various doors and it works perfectly. It adds another layer of security when I travel,” one Amazon reviewer wrote. “However, every single time I travel with it, TSA flags it on my carry-on and then I have to wait while they go through my bags, they always take it out and inspect it and ask me what it is. So I travel with it with the instructions, the bag and box it came in... Plan for a little extra time in TSA line to account for inspection time.”

Solar Charger Power Bank

Solar Charger Power Bank

  • Included cables
  • Wireless charging
  • Excess heat will ruin battery

Having a charged phone is key to ensuring safety on a solo trip. While some products do allow your phone to be tracked even when it’s dead, its best to err on the side of caution and have a full battery.

Keeping a portable charger handy is the secret to staying safe and connected with family and friends. This power bank charges itself with solar energy making it convenient to juice up your phone.

If you're looking for a chic and secure bag, associate editor Shannon Garlin has got you covered. She says this is her go-to when traveling overseas.

“This large (but not too large) crossbody bag has become the star of my latest trip abroad,” she says. “Not only did I get tons of compliments from friends, but also it fit everything I needed for a day exploring a foreign city, all while feeling secure!”

“I used this as a safe when snorkeling to store personal belongings (i.e. wallet, phone). It has provided the safety and peace of mind needed when underwater. Especially at this price point, can’t be beat,” one reviewer said.

Lion Latch (Set of 3)

Lion Latch (Set of 3)

  • Fits on a key ring
  • Too small for large jewelry

If you can’t part with your jewelry for a solo trip, you need to keep it secure. The Lion Latch took the internet by storm in the past year as a new way to store small jewelry on the go.

“I would recommend this to anyone who travels with jewelry. I felt way more secure than using small jewelry bags, boxes or plastic bags. My necklaces didn’t get tangled either,” one Amazon reviewer wrote. “The clip is a great way to lock the container, is so cute and is pretty incognito clipped inside the key ring in my purse.”

Apple AirTags

AirTags (Set of 4)

Apple's AirTags have become a staple for any and every traveler. They can be used to keep track of luggage, wallets and other personal items. They're a personal favorite of associate editor Kamari Stewart for keeping track of her luggage when she's checking a bag.

"I'm always in fear that my checked bags will get lost or not make it on the plane with me, so being able to check on its location provides me a little more peace of mind when traveling," she says.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our experts even suggest every traveler try a trip alone if they can.

Malik says solo travel allows you to see the world without compromise and plan solely for yourself which she says is "very freeing."

With the right research, planning and tools a solo trip can be not only safe but fulfilling.

"I will never forget my first solo trip away from my children," Holmes says. "I was going to a conference and was ready over an hour before I needed to be there, because I was so used to getting everyone else ready instead of just myself. I took myself out for a drink and just watched people. It was thrilling!"

The length of your solo trip is up to you. "A solo trip should be as long as someone wants it to be and as long as they can reasonably afford it to be," Malik says.

"There is no right way to do it," Holmes says. "The right way is your way."

Safety and potential scams depend on your location. Researching the most common scams or safety concerns for an area will allow travelers to make an informed decision and plan accordingly.

"I emphasize this as often folks may find that the place they're going to is actually quite safe, especially if they live in a major city in the U.S. and look at comparisons of crime rates," Malik explains. "We often fear the unknown but whether those fears are based in fact is a whole other question."

For example, Holmes says a common scam in Thailand is a “teacher” approaching you outside a mall to tell you it’s a public holiday and the mall is shut.

"That's when they tell you that they can take you to one [a mall] that’s open. It comes across so friendly and helpful, but the mall is not shut. Do not go [with them]," Holmes says.

Is it safe to fly during the solar eclipse? Here’s what experts have to say

DALLAS -- If you need to fly in the afternoon of April 8, you might want to grab a pair of solar eclipse glasses.

Airlines and government officials say it is safe to travel during the April 8 once-in-a-lifetime event. The Federal Aviation Administration is forecasting 47,137 flights to operate on April 8 .

Health officials are warning eclipse viewers to wear protective eyewear, and that doesn’t rule out travelers. The sun’s intense brightness can damage eyes in seconds. It’ll be damaged even quicker at more than 30,000 feet in the air, said Eric Christian, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and an eclipse expert.

“The sun will be a little bit brighter, but you shouldn’t ever look at it except during totality without either approved eclipse glasses or in the correct pinhole camera,” Christian said. “Even the smallest little piece of the sun sticking out can actually damage your retina. Be very careful.”

Experts say travelers flying along the path of totality, from Mexico into the northeastern United States and Canada, may experience a longer eclipse from the clouds based on how much closer they are to the sun. Totality in Dallas will last just under 4 minutes, though the exact duration depends on location. Christian estimates travelers flying along the path of totality to receive roughly 10 minutes of totality, and a longer partial eclipse.

Several airlines have announced and marketed “solar eclipse flights” which are special flights flying along the path of totality and have the highest chances of a great view from the clouds. Among these airlines is Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Dallas’ JSX.

Christian said when it comes to photographing the eclipse, it is recommended that passengers leave that to the professionals.

“The eclipse is a really unique thing and the best thing to do is to watch it during totality, and let your eyes get accustomed to it,” he said.

According to Southwest, its operational teams — anyone from pilots, flight attendants, tech operations, ground operations and network operations control workers — are in full communication regarding the eclipse. Employees are all advised to wear protective eyewear. The FAA has also offered guidance to commercial planes and private aircraft ahead of flights.

“In advance of a solar eclipse, the FAA asks airlines and pilots flying under air traffic control to plan ahead and file a preferred route ,” the FAA said in an emailed statement. “Advanced planning will minimize route changes and help the FAA better manage the flow of traffic in busy airspace, resulting in fewer delays.”

The FAA is also advising pilots flying on April 8 that regular activities like practice approaches and pilot training operations at airports in the eclipse path will be limited and possibly prohibited during the event.

All Southwest flights flying through the path of totality will have eclipse viewing glasses. Delta is providing solar eclipse glasses, a partnership with retailer Warby Parker, for its two path of totality flights.

Southwest’s air traffic management team has also been meeting regularly with the Federal Aviation Administration and doesn’t anticipate any widespread effect on operations. However, the forecast isn’t looking very bright for the millions of people looking forward to the event. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth predicted North Texas would be “cloudier than normal.”

Christian said flights along the path of totality “won’t be able to avoid all the serious weather.” He said light fluffy, high-altitude clouds tend not to be very much of a problem, but it’s the low-lying heavy clouds that matter for viewing purposes.

All in all, Christian said it is safe to fly during the eclipse. Pilots, aviation officials and those involved with flights on April 8 won’t compromise safety to get the best views.

“Plane travel is very safe and they’re not going to risk people’s lives to get a little more of the eclipse,” Christian said.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

Taiwan was rocked Wednesday morning by the island’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century, a magnitude 7.4 tremor that killed at least nine people, injured more than 800 others and trapped dozens of people.

The heaviest damage was in Hualien County on the island’s east coast, a sleepy, scenic area prone to earthquakes. Footage from the aftermath showed a 10-story building there partially collapsed and leaning heavily to one side, from which residents emerged through windows and climbed down ladders, assisted by rescuers. Three hikers were killed after being hit by falling rocks on a hiking trail in Taroko National Park, according to the county government.

By late afternoon, officials said rescue efforts were underway to try to rescue 127 people who were trapped, many of them on hiking trails in Hualien.

One building in Changhua County, on the island’s west coast, collapsed entirely. The quake was felt throughout Taiwan and set off at least nine landslides, sending rocks tumbling onto Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to local media reports. Rail services were halted at one point across the island.

The earthquake, with an epicenter off Taiwan’s east coast, struck during the morning commute, shortly before 8 a.m. Taiwanese authorities said by 3 p.m., more than 100 aftershocks, many of them stronger than magnitude 5, had rumbled through the area.

In the capital, Taipei, buildings shook for over a minute from the initial quake. Taiwan is at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity. Hualien sits on multiple active faults, and 17 people died in a quake there in 2018.

Here is the latest:

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people there were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, a holiday across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn the dead and make offerings at their graves. Officials warned the public to stay away from visiting tombs in mountain areas as a precaution, especially because rain was forecast in the coming days.

TSMC, the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated workers from its factories but said a few hours later that they were returning to work. Chip production is highly precise, and even short shutdowns can cost millions of dollars.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, who is also its president-elect, visited the city of Hualien this afternoon to assess the destruction and the rescue efforts, a government announcement said. Mr. Lai, who will become president in May, said the most urgent tasks were rescuing trapped residents and providing medical care. Next, Mr. Lai said, public services must be restored, including transportation, water and power. He said Taiwan Railway’s eastern line could be reopened by Thursday night.

Taiwan’s fire department has updated its figures, reporting that nine people have died and 934 others have been injured in the quake. Fifty-six people in Hualien County remain trapped.

Officials in Taiwan warned residents to not visit their relatives' tombs, especially in the mountains, this weekend during the holiday, known as Ching Ming, meant to honor them. There had already been 100 aftershocks and the forecast called for rain, which could make travel conditions on damaged roads more treacherous.

Crews are working to reach people trapped on blocked roads. As of 1 p.m. local time, roads were impassable due to damage and fallen rock in 19 places, according to the Ministry of Transportation. At least 77 people remain trapped. A bridge before Daqingshui Tunnel appeared to have completely collapsed.

Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades — a train derailment in 2021 that killed 49 people — took place on the first day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday period that year, in the same region as the earthquake.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people here were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, or Ching Ming, a day across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn their dead, especially by making offerings at their graves. Now those plans will be disrupted for many Taiwanese.

The holiday weekend would typically see a spike in travel as people visit family across Taiwan. Currently, both rail transport and highways are blocked in parts of Hualien, said Transport Minister Wang Guo-cai. Work is underway to restore rail transportation in Hualien, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored at noon on Thursday, he said.

Taiwan’s preparedness has evolved in response to past quakes.

Taiwan’s earthquake preparedness has evolved over the past few decades in response to some of the island’s largest and most destructive quakes .

In the years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in 1999, the authorities established an urban search-and-rescue team and opened several emergency medical operation centers, among other measures .

And in 2018, after a quake in the eastern coastal city of Hualien killed 17 people and caused several buildings to partially collapse, the government ordered a wave of building inspections .

Taiwan has also been improving its early warning system for earthquakes since the 1980s. And two years ago, it rolled out new building codes that, among other things, require owners of vulnerable buildings to install ad-hoc structural reinforcements.

So how well prepared was Taiwan when a 7.4 magnitude quake struck near Hualien on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more?

Across the island, one building collapsed entirely, 15 others were in a state of partial collapse and another 67 were damaged, the island’s fire department said on Wednesday afternoon . Structural engineers could not immediately be reached for comment to assess that damage, or the extent to which building codes and other regulations might have either contributed to it or prevented worse destruction.

As for search-and-rescue preparedness, Taiwan is generally in very good shape, said Steve Glassey, an expert in disaster response who lives in New Zealand.

“ The skill sets, the capabilities, the equipment, the training is second to none,” said Dr. Glassey, who worked with Taipei’s urban search-and-rescue team during the response to a devastating 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. “They’re a very sharp operation.”

But even the best urban search-and-rescue team will be stretched thin if an earthquake causes multiple buildings to collapse, Dr. Glassey said.

Taiwan has options for requesting international help with search-and-rescue efforts. It could directly ask another country, or countries, to send personnel. And if multiple teams were to get involved, it could ask the United Nations to help coordinate them, as it did after the 1999 earthquake.

Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the United Nations, said on Wednesday afternoon that no such request had yet been made as a result of the latest earthquake.

Meaghan Tobin contributed reporting.

At least seven people have died and 736 have been injured as a result of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Another 77 people remained trapped in Hualien County, many of them on hiking trails. Search and rescue operations are underway, said the fire department.

Siyi Zhao

Aftershocks of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 were likely to occur over the next three or four days, said Wu Chien-fu, director of the Taiwanese Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, at a news conference.

As of 2 p.m., 711 people had been injured across Taiwan, the fire department said, and 77 people in Hualien County remained trapped. The four who were known to have died were in Hualien.

Victoria Kim

Hualien County is a quiet and scenic tourist destination.

Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast is a scenic, sleepy tourist area tucked away from the island’s urban centers, with a famous gorge and aquamarine waters. It also happens to sit on several active faults , making it prone to earthquakes.

The county has a population of about 300,000, according to the 2020 census, about a third of whom live in the coastal city of Hualien, the county seat. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Taiwan. About three hours by train from the capital, Taipei, the city describes itself as the first place on the island that’s touched by the sun.

Hualien County is home to Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan’s most popular scenic areas. Visitors come to explore the Taroko Gorge, a striated marble canyon carved by the Liwu River, which cuts through mountains that rise steeply from the coast. The city of Hualien is a popular destination as a gateway to the national park.

According to the state-owned Central News Agency, three hikers were trapped on a trail near the entrance to the gorge on Wednesday, after the quake sent rocks falling. Two of them were found dead, the news agency said. Administrators said many roads within the park had been cut off by the earthquake, potentially trapping hikers, according to the report.

Earthquakes have rattled Hualien with some regularity. In 2018, 17 people were killed and hundreds of others injured when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck just before midnight, its epicenter a short distance northeast of the city of Hualien.

Many of the victims in that quake were in a 12-story building that was severely tilted, the first four floors of which were largely crushed, according to news reports from the time. The next year, the area was shaken by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that injured 17 people.

The area has some of the highest concentrations of Taiwan’s aboriginal population, with several of the island’s Indigenous tribes calling the county home .

The county government in Hualien released a list of people that had been hospitalized with injuries, which stood at 118 people as of midday Wednesday.

Across Taiwan, one building fell down entirely, in Changhua County on the west coast, and 15 buildings partially collapsed, Taiwan’s fire department said. Another 67 buildings were damaged. One of the partially collapsed structures was a warehouse in New Taipei City where four people were rescued, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Another 12 were rescued at a separate New Taipei City building where the foundation sank into the ground.

Peggy Jiang, who manages The Good Kid, a children’s bookstore down the street from the partially collapsed Uranus Building in Hualien, said it was a good thing they had yet to open when the quake struck. The area is now blocked off by police and rescue vehicles. “Most people in Hualien are used to earthquakes,” she said. “But this one was particularly scary, many people ran in the street immediately afterward.”

Lin Jung, 36, who manages a shop selling sneakers in Hualien, said he had been at home getting ready to take his 16-month-old baby to a medical appointment when the earthquake struck. He said it felt at first like a series of small shocks, then “suddenly it turned to an intense earthquake shaking up and down.” The glass cover of a ceiling lamp fell and shattered. “All I could do was protect my baby.”

The earthquake damaged buildings and a highway in Hualien.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday damaged many buildings and a major highway in Hualien, a city on the eastern coast, and it knocked out power as it rocked the island.

Across Taiwan, the quake and its aftershocks caused one building to completely collapse and 15 others to partially collapse, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Sixty-seven other buildings sustained damage.

Two tall buildings in Hualien that sustained particularly extensive damage were at the center of the rescue efforts there. Most damage across the city was not life-threatening, said Huang Hsuan-wan, a reporter for a local news site.

Where buildings were reported damaged in Hualien City

“A lot of roads were blocked off. There are a lot of walls toppled over onto cars,” Derik du Plessis, 44, a South African resident of Hualien, said shortly after the earthquake. He described people rushing around the city to check on their houses and pick up their children. One of his friends lost her house, he said.

One of the damaged buildings in Hualien, a 10-story structure called the Uranus Building that housed a mix of homes and shops, was tilted over and appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Many of its residents managed to flee, but some were missing, said Sunny Wang, a journalist based in the city. Rescuers were trying to reach the basement, concerned that people might be trapped there.

Photographs of the initial damage in Hualien showed another building, a five-story structure, leaning to one side, with crushed motorcycles visible at the ground-floor level. Bricks had fallen off another high-rise, leaving cracks and holes in the walls.

The quake also set off at least nine landslides on Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said part of the road had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said four people had been killed in the earthquake.

John Yoon

Across Taiwan, 40 flights have been canceled or delayed because of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Taiwan’s national emergency response center this morning, where she was briefed about the response efforts underway by members of the ministries of defense, transportation, economic affairs and agriculture, as well as the fire department.

A look at Taiwan’s strongest earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.

At least four people died after the quake struck off Taiwan’s east coast, officials said.

Here’s a look back at some of the major earthquakes in modern Taiwanese history:

Taichung, 1935

Taiwan’s deadliest quake registered a magnitude of 7.1 and struck near the island’s west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Administration. More than 12,000 others were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tainan, 1941

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake in December 1941, which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths, the United States Geological Survey said.

Chi-Chi, 1999

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Yujing, 2016

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people . The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
