Nemo’s World

Article By: Phoenix Arrien

captain cook cruises cairns qld

Come aboard as three generations cruise along Australia’s Great Barrier Reef looking for “Nemo” and his undersea friends — and find them.

“Can we visit Nemo again?” asked my eldest son as he climbed into the large Jacuzzi spa with me. No, he was not talking about the movie, Trent was raving about the real thing: the clownfish that swim about in one of the greatest marine environments in the world — the Great Barrier Reef .

We just happened to be cruising along this magnificent stretch of water on a four-day trip with Captain Cook Cruises . Our small and very comfortable cruise ship plies the northern part of the Reef off the east coast of Australia. Just the territory little Nemo himself tried to swim across in the blockbuster Disney-Pixar movie, Finding Nemo .

An Amazing Undersea World off the Coast of Queensland

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest natural feature on earth, stretching more than 2,300 kilometers along the northeast coast of Australia from the northern tip of the province of Queensland to just north of Bundaberg. From our vantage point in the spa on the top deck of the ship, the world around us was filled with the light eggshell blue of a sunny sky over the gorgeous deep blue of the sea stretching out like a shimmering, wavy carpet. But not too wavy. The great thing about the Reef is the lack of big waves. No seasick kids or parents. Now this was my kind of cruise.

We left Cairns , Queensland’s northernmost city, several days before, aiming to travel further north to Cooktown, Queensland’s northernmost town. In between we explored the sort of tropical islands usually seen in glossy brochures: gleaming white sandy beaches edging green forested hearts.

We were ferried to a few of these for visits filled with sandcastles and paddling, walks and talks. We all experienced great delight from poking at seaweed and playfully pretending to stomp on tiny little crabs that sank themselves into the wet sand quicker than even a toddler’s jumping feet.

The ship stopped at a particularly shallow part of the Reef, floating there like a great mother ship while little offspring — glass-bottomed boats — puttered away from her to bob over great swathes of coral. Through the looking glass we saw a glorious underwater world where many Nemos and their finned friends swam amongst colorful coral.

Not Fancy but Very Comfortable and Small Cruise Ship

The ship we sailed on, while smaller than the large ocean-going vessels, still has all the comforts on its three upper decks, including swimming pools, hot tubs, small library/DVD room, a dining room and evening entertainment.

The cabins were surprisingly large for so small a ship and I reveled in some of the biggest attractions about cruising: someone else to clean my room (aaah), make my bed (sigh), cook my meals (uh yes), wash up (sob). Oh I loved it.

While there are no specific children activities, we brought our own toys for down time between tours, eating, movies and spas.

Living & Sailing Through History with Explorer Captain Cook

We were following in the wave-steps of Captain James Cook, an Englishman who, in 1770, sailed up this way and parked his tall ship, the Endeavour , inside a sheltered inlet for a time. A thriving town appropriately called Cooktown now hugs this inlet and it’s a fascinating frontier settlement.

Half a day’s shore leave gave us time to explore its museums, monuments, character-filled main street fronting the water and observe the sort of interesting rough characters who only thrive in such remote Australian outposts.

A tour guide drove us up to Grassy Hill , the local lookout. Captain Cook climbed this high point several times during his stay (without the help of a minibus) to get his bearings and find a way back out through the dangerous reefs. It’s certainly a spectacular view of land, river and sea. I gazed at the lush tropical landscape, as wild and green as it was in the Captain’s day and imagined the wildlife hiding in the bush and the crocodiles waiting in the mangrove swamps by the water.

Back on the cruise ship, we settled in for a delicious seafood lunch and discussed our family plans for the rest of the afternoon. These involved the two Jacuzzi spas on the upper deck where I pondered Trent’s request for more Nemo spotting.

I was saved having to make a definitive response by a shout below decks. We rushed to the side to see people pointing at a whale coming up for air, his long sleek back shining in the sun. He opened his air hole and breathed, then submerged.

The Family Connection with Grandparents in Tow

We did have another chance to ride the glass-bottomed boat on the way back to Cairns with my accompanying mother (do travel with grandma if you get the chance, great bonding for the generations), who was even led on an unforgettable snorkel by an accommodating staff member. Grandma arrived back on deck, animated and full of wonder at the underwater world she had just found. It proves life does start in your mid-60’s.

Our last night on the ship was full of laughs and entertainment as the vessel sped back to Cairns for a morning arrival. The staff put on a show that was as wacky and hilarious as amateur acts can get, and we bade the hardworking crew a fond farewell when we docked in Cairns.

Nemo’s, spas, wonderful food, friendly service, islands, an historic frontier town and a clean room. What a great trip… and not necessarily in that order.

Planning a Captain Cook Adventure with your Family

Please note that the Reef Endeavour , the ship this family sailed with several years ago, has been moved to Fiji. For the 2015 season, Captain Cook Great Barrier Reef Cruises range from three to seven nights in length, and are now done with the Corral Princess , a similar ship. Rates include all meals, afternoon tea service, excursions including the glass bottom boat cruise, and more. Scuba diving excursions are available, for a fee.  For more information on upcoming itineraries and fares, visit Captain Cook Cruises .

Has anyone travelled with C. Cook Reef Endeavour?

If so, what is the accommodation and food like? What are drinks prices like?

Is the trip worthwhile? I thought we may see areas we would not otherwise see if staying on an island or the mainland.

By the look of the map on Captain Cook's website, the cabins are 'way below' and could be rough travelling and a bit claustrophobic.

Is it worth paying the extra and getting a stateroom (with bigger bed)and its' own doorway that opens onto the deck?

Also, if we did this 4 night cruise , does anyone have any suggestions as to where to spend the remaining 6-7 nights? We have been to Port Douglas , Palm Cove and Cairns . (The only place I can think of is Dunk Island, or going south to Yeppoon). Is there anything to see at Yeppoon?

The cruise finishes at Cairns. We are coming from Melbourne, Australia.

I'd be interested in any feedback.

We stayed at Yeppoon this trip for a couple of nights and yes, we did like it. It's quite an interesting place! Then we went out to Great Keppell Island and stayed at the Mecure Resort. It was great" Keppell is quite a big island - you can do lots of exploring and hiking through to deserted beaches etc. The resort is a little tired though and is about to be refurbished in 2007 (so we were told). However, the food was good, the water was beautiful, lots of water activities etc. Have you ever been to Fraser Island out of Hervey Bay. Also great. You don't say what time of year you are planning your trip. We were there last month and first we did the whale watching trip (fantastic!), then we went out and stayed on Fraser Island for 2 days. If you haven't been there it is also very worth a visit.

Hi HelpFiji

Thanks for all the information. It's given me some interesting ideas.

' class=

Ive done the trip North to Lizard and Cooktown about three times. Definitely recommend it. Food excellent. Its quite an active trip loads of diving and snorkeling. Crew very friendly. Id take a stateroom..Lovely leving the door open at night and being able to see the water and the night sky. Try for a stateroom forward near the Library. You can wander in there at any time for a coffee without waking your partner up. State Rooms quite spacious. reasonable storage. They have a tropical night..so bring tropical shirt or sarongs. You wont regret the trip..really good. Take walking shoes to do the walks around lizard island.

For the extra days..I'd head down to Mission Beach..lovely and unspoilt. From there you can catch the ferry to Dunk Island for a few days. The restaurants in Mission Beach are great Further south there are other national park islands you can visit for a day. One has a Resort.

Thanks for your feedback. It is sort-of what I thought, but is always good to hear from someone who has done it!

What are the resorts you are talking about, further south?

I am a little worried if we did the C. Cook cruise (which sounds great) and then went to, say, Dunk Island, it may all feel the same, or similar, as Brampton Island. However, if we just went to Mission Beach, it would be a waste not to see Dunk! (Does this make sense?)

I guess we are after a bit of a different experience from Palm Cove, Port Douglas, Brampton Island, (which were great).

We will have about 8-10 days in total for our trip.

The C. Cook cruise would be 'different' for us, but what would be 'different' for the rest of the holiday?

We don't want any more airfares than say, Melbourne to Cairns !

I am wondering if we might be better to NOTdo the C. Cook cruise and go and stay at Airlie Beach - take a 3-4 night sail/ cruise , do day trips and stay 2-4 nights on a Whitsunday Island. ('Though I guess this is not much different from what I'm trying to avoid - although would be more economical).

The other possibility I have in mind is cruising the Yasawa Islands in Fiji, or going to the Cook Islands.

We both love snorkelling and appreciate 'good' snorkelling. Both like a laid-back type of holiday, with some comforts!

Hope I am not confusing people. Maybe there is someone who has been to all these places, and can advise me.

I look forward to, and appreciate, any advice.

I know people done the Fiji cruise and the Reef Endeavour north to Lizard...Preference is for the Lizard Island cruise . (both same companys anyway)

Im not sure what is at Yepoon..

Thanks for the advice. Glad to hear the C.Cook trip gets the thumbs up!

Just wondering if going to Dunk Island for the second part of the holiday will be too similiar to Brampton Island, where we have recently been.

Do you have any other suggestions for the 'second half?'

The other possibility is to do the C. Cook trip to Cape York, which is 7 nights, which I tend to feel is too long 'on board'.

Look forward to hearing any more info.

Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Cruise Port Guide

Cairns is often considered to be the gateway city to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The city serves as the starting point for many visitors on a cruise to Australia to make the short jaunt to the world-famous reef. Cairns is located in Far North Queensland and is known for its tropical climate and awe-inspiring natural sights.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to cairns (yorkey's knob), great barrier reef.

The main attraction for those on one of our Cairns cruises is the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. During a cruise to Cairns, you can take shore excursions and tours to the Great Barrier Reef, which is the largest coral reef on the planet and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to a variety of sea creatures and is a popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving.

City of Cairns

Cairns itself shouldn’t be missed while you’re in port. It has a vibrant downtown area with shops, restaurants, and a scenic waterfront.  Cairns even has a man-made saltwater lagoon, which was built to ensure visitors don’t come into contact with the crocodiles that sometimes hang out around the beaches of Cairns. You can swim without worry in the saltwater lagoon.

Daintree Rainforest

When it comes to nature and beauty, the Great Barrier Reef isn’t the only natural attraction near Cairns to visit. The Daintree Rainforest makes for a memorable sight to see during Cairns cruises. This Australian rainforest is the country’s largest contiguous area of tropical rainforest.

Learn More About Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Shore Excursions

Top things to do in cairns (yorkey's knob), kuranda scenic railway.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is a great excursion to enjoy during a Cairns cruise. See the region’s beautiful World Heritage-listed forest as you journey from Cairns to the town of Kuranda. The railway was built over 120 years ago and takes about two hours one-way.

Helicopter Ride Over the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is so massive that it’s hard to truly comprehend its size when visiting it via water. A helicopter ride over the Great Barrier Reef will give you an amazing bird’s-eye view of the reef and help you to truly comprehend its colossal scope and importance to the world’s ecosystem.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

One of the most fun and scenic ways to visit the rainforests near Cairns is on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which is a 7.5-meter cableway that runs over the canopies of Barron Gorge National Park. You can choose from a variety of gondolas to ride in, including glass-bottom gondolas, so you don’t miss any of the beauty happening beneath your feet.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Cruise Port

Cairns has a variety of restaurants and bars, many of which boast beachfront real estate. For some good eats and drinks, head to these spots during Cairns cruises.

You’ll find pizza and more at this restaurant and bar in Cairns that has excellent mountain and ocean views you can enjoy while eating.

Order some French-inspired, fresh seafood dishes at C’est Bon, an authentic French restaurant located in Cairns.

Apex Milk Bar

For some casual cuisine, head to Apex Milk Bar, where you’ll find some of Cairns’ best burgers and fish and chips. You’ll also want to try one of their spectacularly delicious milkshakes.

Culture & History of the Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Cruise Port

Cairns has a rich history that includes some important parts of Australia’s history. You’ll learn more about the aboriginal cultures that have long called the region home, as well as see the point where Captain Cook pulled ashore to repair his boat. Cairns also has roots as an industrial town that produced timber and sugar.

The culture of Cairns today has a heavy focus on the beach, with a strong surf culture. You’ll also find that the party scene in Cairns is thriving, particularly after the sun goes down. It’s not all laid-back beaches and bar hopping, though. Cairns also has a variety of museums and art galleries along with a delicious modern Australian culinary scene.

Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Port Facilities & Location

Larger ships visiting the Cairns cruise port will anchor offshore and tender passengers to Yorkeys Knob, which is a 15-minute shuttle bus ride away from Cairns’ city center. There are also restaurants, shopping, and a beach located within walking distance of the cruise dock.

Transportation in Cairns (Yorkey's Knob)

Public buses operate routes all around Cairns, out to its suburbs and neighboring cities, and attractions. In addition, you can find taxis in Cairns.

Shopping Near the Cairns (Yorkey's Knob) Cruise Port

From markets to boutiques to shopping centers, you’ll have a variety of shopping options to choose from during Cairns cruises. Popular souvenirs to get from Cairns include photography prints of the coastline and Great Barrier Reef, jewelry made with local pearls, and quintessential Australian clothing like Akubra hats or locally made leather boots.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Tipping is not expected in Australia, and that includes restaurants and bars. It is appreciated, however, and how much to tip for quality service is up to the visitor. In general, you can expect to tip less than you would in the U.S. – think more along the lines of 10% to 12%.

As for what to pay and tip with, the official currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD$). Keep in mind that instead of $1 bills, Australia uses $1 coins, and also has $2 coins. Don’t misplace your loose change as it can add up quickly! Credit cards are also commonly taken in Cairns, with Visa and Mastercard being the most widely accepted.

Big Things of Australia

The Big Captain Cook In Cairns

the big captain cook - a large statue representing captain James Cook

The Big Captain Cook

The enormous statue, depicting an Australian explorer called Captain James Cook, was erected off the Cook Highway, Cairns, Queensland, in 1972. The sculpture once accompanied The Captain Cook Motel that has since been demolished, leaving the landmark standing lonely and the locals divided about its fate.

The locals are undecided about whether the sculpture should be refurbished or relocated. In 2006, students from James Cook University petitioned to have the famous statue adopted by the university.

The 10-metre-tall Captain Cook statue stands with his right arm stretched out, with the palm facing down. The statue’s hand gesture also sparks a lot of debate and controversies among locals and visitors.

Some people find it disrespectful to the Aboriginal population of Australia, while others believe that it was a mascot for the demolished hotel. The statue’s controversial salute has also been likened to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Salute as a tribute to the former leader of Germany.

Following the worldwide ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, over 10,000 people signed an online petition to push for the removal of the statue because of the history of slavery during Cooks’ era. However, some historians argue that the sculpture’s gesture shows Captain Cook raising his arm at a group of Aborigines attacking him with spears during his exploration. One Aboriginal artist suggested adding a Boomerang to the Captain’s statue to shield himself from the apparent attack.

Senior locals also have different stories about the sculpture and the reason behind its construction. However, many people tend to associate the gestures with the era of slavery and discrimination.

In 2022 the land on which The Big Captain Cook stands on was sold to the James Cook University. The university plans to build a teaching hospital on the block of land.

A man by the name of Martin Anton who is an owner of a demolition company purchased the rights to dismantle and remove the controversial statue stating “I just didn’t want it bulldozed by somebody”.

The statue was removed on 24th May 2022.

Queensland Cruises

Quick links, stay connected, popular news, 10 of the best apartments on gold coast, unveiling brisbane’s hidden gems, explore cairns without breaking the bank, springbrook national park.

Most of the best cruise ships come to visit Queensland or in many cases, Queensland has developed a cruise industry of its own. The major cruise companies like  P&O Cruises  and  Royal Caribbean Cruises  depart some voyages from Brisbane.  Orion Expeditions  and  Princess Cruises  both visit Queensland destinations and Coral Sea Cruises also have a Queensland itinerary. The Great Barrier Reef is a huge drawcard for both Australian and international passengers and there is nothing quite like viewing this fantastic attraction from the decks of a modern cruise liner. In this modern day and age when some people are fearful of travelling or simply don’t like to fly, the cruise industry provides a viable alternative for a fantastic holiday in a safe environment.

Queensland has many must see attractions that the cruise operators like to include in their itineraries. The islands of the Whitsunday Passage are a real magnet. It is common to see two or three liners anchored near  Hamilton Island  at any given time and the passengers can take advantage of local tours to places of interest. Also in the Whitsundays are many local cruise companies who run mostly sailing ships through the protected waters of the Whitsunday Passage.  Barefoot Cruises  offers the Coral Trekker for a Whitsunday journey. Fantasy Cruises and Cruise Whitsundays both do interisland cruises as well as daily trips to the Great Barrier Reef. The islands between Hinchinbrook Island and Cairns are also of special interest to cruise companies. Companies like  Captain Cook Cruises  and  Coral Princess cruises  run regular trips through these waters.

In Far North Queensland there are a number of Cruise options operating out of Cairns and Port Douglas. Quicksilver Cruises operate daily services to the Great Barrier Reef. Captain Cook Cruises also operate special cruise to the waters to the north of Cairns and visit places like Cooktown and Lizard Island. These waters are among the best for diving and these cruises are extremely popular.

If you are considering a cruise for your next holiday then take one that includes Queensland in its itinerary.
