Top-Rated Boat Tours in Costa Rica!

We had an amazing time sailing, snorkeling, and relaxing on the Kuna Vela. Andres (first mate) and Israel (captain) made the experience great. They were very accommodating and kind. Andres pointed out a bunch of sights to see, led us snorkeling, and took pictures the entire time of us which we now have as great memories. We saw Humpback whales, dolphins, and sea turtles while sailing and a variety of fish while snorkeling. We definitely recommend this tour. It will add a really memorable experience to your trip to Costa Rica.

Wow what an outstanding tour. We were lucky enough to be the only family on the tour that day and what an experience. Andreas and the captain were exceptional. We sailed round Papagayo and saw incredible marine life including dolphins and whales. We snorkelled for a little while and although visibility wasn't great we still saw a fair few fish. We were treated to delicious fruit and snacks and what seemed like a never ending supply of beer! They found us the perfect spot to watch the beautiful sunset. The trip was our highlight to Costa Rica and I would even say the best excursion we have ever done in our travels. Kuna Vela is the best. Book you won't be disappointed!!

My boyfriend and I had a great time and will definitely be doing this again when we return. The captain and Andres were AMAZING! Andres really does a good job of showing you the sights and ensuring that your sailing experience is nothing less than stellar. His photography skills were great and we really appreciated all the photos he got for us. There was only one other couple on our tour, so we really felt like we had individualized attention. We also saw dolphins which was a perfect ending to our sail. We can’t wait to do this again and to recommend it to others!

What a great Sailing Experience with a Great Hospitality. From the Welcoming till Departing you know you are in Safe & Expert Hands. All the staff in the Boat was very knowledgeable and experienced. If you are looking for a personalized service Kuna Vela is the way to go. Let the Captain pick the spot and you set back, relax and enjoy your Beautiful sailing day. Thank You Lindsay Hyler-Russell & Clint Russell for the Amazing time and Hospitality. I will be back for more!

It was lovely seeing Costa Rica from the water. Such a beautiful afternoon sailing the coast, swimming, snorkeling and experiencing the sunset. While on the beach you can explore a cave and climb up the hillside to see a panoramic view. The crew and owners are both professional, super friendly and accommodating. The snacks and beverages were plentiful and delicious. What is in that rum punch? So good, it must be the secret ingredient that makes it special. Would highly recommend this company!!

Found Clint the recent owner of Kuna Vela Sailing to be very helpful in accomodating us to be picked up from our beach rather than from Cocoa Beach where they operate from. My party of 3 were joined by 4 other people for the half day snorkel and sunset sailing tour. Captain Israel and his First Mate Andres made us feel very welcome. Captain Israel takes pride and care of this sailing boat and I felt safe the whole time. We were offered drinks, and relaxing music to listen to as we watched flying fish jumping out of the water on route to a quiet cove where we donned snorkel gear and led by Andres swam over to a rocky area where many fish live. For those who needed it masks, snorkels and fins were available. I was delighted with the variety of fish I saw. Andres was busy with his camera taking photos of us and the sea life the whole time we were with them. These were made available free of charge within a day of our trip and I really appreciated the excellent underwater photos. A delicious plate of sandwiches, chips and dip and fruit and of course some run punch were offered after the snorkeling. They were able to accommodate my gluten free friend with appropriate snacks too. Returning the wind picked up and sails were unfurled for part of the time. We watched the sunset and returned to shore where Clint took us back to our beach. A delightful, relaxing time I highly recommend the Kuna Vela and crew.

Sunset Snorkel Cruise on the Kuna Vela. 4 in the family, 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We all agree on the Top Ten standing! Captain Israel and 1st Mate Andres were excellent, friendly, knowledgeable hosts. Andres seemed to be everywhere all at once: serving us amazing rum punch, beer, and snacks; working the rigging; taking pictures for us; catching a beautiful yellowfin off the back of the boat; pointing out dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life; leading the snorkel experience; and more. Hardest working man in the business I bet. And he did it all with patience, kindness, and a big "Pura Vida" every time. Captain Israel kept a steady hand on the ship, saw dolphins before anyone had an idea to even be looking, and gave us the best sunset view you could ever hope for. Snorkeling was great too! Eagle Rays, Pufferfish, Angel Fish, Sea Urchins, Needlefish, fish everywhere. But what I liked best was that as the sun set I looked around and noticed all the other tours were already quickly motoring back to the harbor. Captain Israel sat quietly and continued to watch the pink and orange sky unfold all around us. He gave us the time to really be in the moment with our families. When it was almost dark, he slowly turned the boat home. Amazing afternoon and evening and worth every penny. Thank you Kuna Vela for a most excellent experience!

The owner, Clint, his captain and crew were excellent as sailors... photographer, chef.... as well as serving us our drinks and food and assisting us on shore... I am personally a sailboat sailor, racer, and sailing instructor.. Safety and comfort are the priority for this ship and her crew... The boat is a very large... sea worthy..... and well maintained . You will not regret scheduling a party or private event with this company...Clint is an A+

The boat is beautiful! Clint is great at organizing everything and making sure everyone has a great time! Captain Isreal is very knowledgeable and funny - he even has a playlist all timed out so that the sun sets as the last song finishes!! First Mate Andrés is so attentive - he is a great photographer, takes many incredible pictures, and makes sure everyone has plenty to eat and drink the whole ride! The snorkeling was great! So many things to see! This really was the highlight of our trip in beautiful Costa Rica! We will definitely be back and do this again!! I HIGHLY recommend this trip!! Read less

Crew of Marlin del Rey catamaran

5-Star Rating on TripAdvisor

Woman & crew members Marlin del Rey

We booked thru our hotel and had a shuttle to coco beach. They are very organized and friendly boat staff. Great music, food and drinks. We saw flying fish, dolphins and stingrays. Ended with a beautiful sunset. We went on a Sunday and had 28 ppl on catamaran...I would go again!

Tourists sunbathing on catamaran

We had a great trip, from prompt pick up on the shore to viewing the beautiful sunset and return to Coco beach. The food was good, crew was attentive, vessel was spotless too. I would highly recommend the trip to anyone wanted to have a great day of beautiful scenery.

Women on catamaran drinking

What an absolutely fantastic day. There were almost 50 of us on board plus the crew. There is so much space that it never felt crowded once. These amazing men took care of us better than we ever could have expected - felt like Queens and Kings on our ship. The food was delicious, drinks were non-stop and the sights were breathtaking. Could not have picked a better thing to do!

Snorkeling in Costa Rica

This was by far the best organized tour that I have ever been on. The crew was courteous and helpful; especially Johann Gutierrez. As a Master Diver, he gave me tips on where and how to maximize my snorkeling experience on his waters..EVERYONE was treated like family. Thank you Johann, for everything you did to make this a lifelong memory!!

Already regarded as an important access point in 1856, as many ships bound for Costa Rica from Europe, it played an important role in the defense of national sovereignty when the 10th of April the filibuster army under the command of American Mercenary William Walker invaded the country through Sarapiquí River but is defeated in the battle of Sardinal by Costa Rican forces.

Banana Boat Costa Rica

Had a wonderful excursion to Sealounge Catamaran! The staff was terrific; very accommodating and fun! The beach was beautiful, they prepared a fabulous lunch, and the cocktails on the beach were perfect. I would do this again in a heartbeat!

TripAdvisor

Randall and the crew were awesome! They took us to a private beach where we ate, played with the jet skis, and snorkeled. They also took us to watch the sunset before taking us back to the dock! Highly recommended!!

We used Sealounge Catamaran for a boat party and they were great! The crew was awesome and very helpful, we explored a private beach where they cooked for us and rode jetskis. Plenty of tour for a large crowd and a nice roof that you can jump from. Definitely would recommend to others!

Great experience and service!I'll make this quick. What was provided for us: yacht, diving, snorkel, jetski, catered food, drinks, snacks, private beach. The staff were very friendly and service was great.

This beach is completely secluded and accessible only by boat, it nearly takes your breath away as you realize this is where you will be spending your day! Randall and his team are professional and extremely detail oriented. The beach is wonderful, white sand and the jungle flows right into the sand.

Boat tours help visitors access a score of such places by providing easy transportation up rivers, across oceans and through estuaries. During these trips, tour takers may snorkel, swim or sunbathe; they might search for birds or mammals, fish for rainbow bass, or hike along an island’s jungle trails. An ecologically savvy guide, who can help explain the relationships between the varying organisms, often accompanies these tours. Meals are frequently provided, and all guests are equipped with any necessary equipment.

What To Know Before Booking a Catamaran Tour

costa rica sailboat

What to Bring

We suggest bringing:

A towel – We like microfiber because it rolls up small and dries fast

A full bottle of water – Almost all tours include unlimited drinks, but it is always nice to have an extra bottle just in case

A dry bag – We always pack our stuff in a waterproof bag. There have been so many times that we have been on boats in Costa Rica and the wind picks up and water splashes in the boat. Having a dry bag has saved us countless times.

Motion Sickness Pills – You can always buy these in Costa Rica (most Costa Rican pharmacies sell Gravol, if you are wondering which brand), but I always bring some with me just in case. Even if you don’t typically get seak sick, you never know.

SPF 50 – The sun is powerful here. Make sure to reapply sunblock often.

A change of clothes – This is not always necessary, but if you get really wet from swimming, you may want a change of clothes depending on your plans for after your catamaran tour.

What to Wear

We always wear:

A bathing suit – You will most likely go swimming

Fast-drying shorts – Something that is lightweight and dries fast is best.

UV protecting shirt – We suggest wearing a long sleeve UV shirt even when snorkeling. We have been on so many day trips on boats in which people end up really badly burned because they don’t realize how much sun exposure they are getting while swimming.

Flip flops – On most boats, you will be asked to take your shoes off. Wearing flip-flops that can get wet is the easiest thing to slip on and off.

A hat with a strap – I like the nerdy fishing type of hats with a strap. They will protect you from the sun and you don’t need to worry about losing it when the wind picks up.

Sunglasses – Because….sun

Glasses strap – It’s amazing how many times we have almost lost our sunglasses or glasses due to wind while on boats here. It’s always a good idea to have a glasses strap to prevent this.

Best Time of Year

The dry season in Costa Rica runs from mid-December until late April.

During this time of year you should have zero rain on the Pacific coast. However, this time of year also tends to be the most expensive time to visit, and things book out fast.

During the rainy season , you can expect almost daily afternoon rainstorms from about 2 pm to 4 pm. In other words, keep in mind that during the rainy season there is a chance your afternoon catamaran tour could be canceled due to bad weather.

All of the tours we suggested are with reputable companies with good safety ratings. All boats should have life vests on board by law.

However, always look out for your own safety. If something feels off, trust your instincts.

Transportation

Most tours include transportation from your area hotel. We suggest using the included transportation when possible so you don’t need to worry about finding parking.

If you drive and leave your rental car in a parking lot for the duration of your catamaran tour, please don’t leave anything of value in your car.

It’s very rare, but people have been known to have cars broken into especially if valuables are visible.

Fishing tour

You can book half-day or full-day tours, deep sea or inshore fishing trips on both the Pacific and Caribbean coast of the country.

Typically you can keep what you catch, your captain will fillet the fish for you, and you can prepare it at your vacation rental or have a local restaurant prepare your catch for you.

You can find out more with our fishing guide .

It is possible to enjoy white water rafting around the country for all skill levels. Some popular places for this are in La Fortuna and from the Caribbean coast.

You can find out more with our white water rafting guide .

Tortuguero Canoe Trip

If you plan on visiting Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast, we highly suggest going to the national park and enjoying an early morning wildlife canoe ride with a guide. It is incredibly peaceful and you are sure to see tons of wildlife.

You can find out more with our Tortuguero National Park guide .

Whale Watching Tour

The most popular place to take a whale-watching tour is on the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Marino Ballena National Park in Uvita. The best time of year is in August and September. You might see whales, dolphins, birds, and more!

Testimonials

Snorkeling trip to isla tortuga.

This was such a great experience. The staff was absolutely incredible; we had such a great time. We took a boat from Montezuma to Isla Tortuga for snorkeling. We stopped along the way to check out some dolphins and see the beautiful scenery along the way. Lunch was delicious, and the cervezas hit the spot! The guys on the boat were a lot of fun and made the trip very enjoyable. I would recommend Zuma Tours for the Isla Tortuga snorkel trip, it was great!!!

Great time!

Tortuga Tour was awesome! … When we got to the island there was a very tasty lunch already waiting for us. … The tour was 9-4, a full day and worth every penny.

The car rental went extremely easy. He even gave us some recommendations on where to explore and remembered us from our last trip.

We did the water taxi/shuttle to San Jose. Super fast, super easy. A great option if you are short on time. …

All and all every single person we came into contact with at this company was friendly and helpful. Thank you to every one there!

moemoes24

Great service, fantastic tours

We used Zuma tours water taxi service to and from Montezuma Costa Rica and booked a snorkeling tour to Isla Tortuga ( from Montezuma). All around their service was first class. They were on time, the staff was helpful and friendly. It was obvious safety was a top priority. The full day snorkeling trip to Isla Tortuga included 1 1/2 hrs of snorkeling and a tasty bbque lunch. The tour was one of the highlights of my visit to Costa Rica.

Cano Negro: A Wildlife Boat Tour on the Rio Frio

  • Jenn and Matt
  • Activities , Family Travel , National Parks & Reserves

Costa Rica is well known for its impressive wildlife, but some places offer notably better viewing than others. One such spot is the Cano Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge near the country’s northern border with Nicaragua. This remote wildlife refuge is best accessed from La Fortuna or Bijagua. We recently took a boat tour along the river. In this post, we’ll share some of the amazing animals and birds we saw and how you can plan a visit.

Cano Negro Boat Tour

About Cano Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge

The Cano Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge ( Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Mixto Caño Negro ) is an expansive river and wetland ecosystem near the Costa Rica-Nicaragua border.

With an impressive 9,969 hectares (24,634 acres) of protected habitat, this national park hosts around 160 species of mammals, including monkeys, sloths, and jaguars. There are 90 species of bats alone!

Birds are also abundant. The wetlands are an important stop for North American migrants that overwinter in the tropics. More than 300 different bird species have been identified at Cano Negro.

Our Tour Experience

Driving to cano negro.

Our tour began in the town of La Fortuna near the base of Arenal Volcano. Here, we hopped into a small van with our tour guide, Alvaro, and a few other tourists. Alvaro explained that the drive to Cano Negro and the Rio Frio (Cold River) would take about 1.25 hours.

It was a long drive but far from boring. As we passed farm fields, small rivers, and patches of forest, Alvaro explained all about the area.

The farms, he told us, were growing yucca, cassava, and taro root vegetables. He explained more about each one, how they are planted and harvested, and what they are used for.

As we got closer to Cano Negro, Alvaro turned down a bumpy side road. We drove more slowly now, around the ruts and big bumps. We also started to see more wildlife. There were wading birds and even some small caiman (crocodiles) in the wet drainage basins along the road.

Wetlands Cano Negro

The Rio Frio

We soon made it to the tour operator’s base camp built along the Rio Frio. Outside, several large pontoon boats were docked.

The Rio Frio, we learned, runs through the Cano Negro Mixed Wildlife Refuge and eventually flows into Nicaragua. Shortly after crossing the border, it connects with the enormous Lake Nicaragua.

The wide river was brown and murky with large trees and thick shrubs along the edges. Oversized iguanas sunned themselves on the grassy bank by the boats.

Stepping out of the van, our group was led into a big building where some other small tour groups congregated. There was fresh fruit, coffee, juice, and cold water waiting for us. We also met the other guides who would be with us that day. Along with Alvaro, there were two guides named Jason and the boat captain, Max.

Cano Negro Boat Tour

First sightings.

Without even pushing off from the dock, our guides started to point out the wildlife around us. On the left side of the boat, a large caiman was partially submerged, keeping a close eye on us.

Caiman Cano Negro

In the nearby tree was a camouflaged bird called a potoo. Our guide Alvaro, zoomed in with his scope. The impressive bird looked exactly like tree bark.

Potoo bird near Nicaragua border

As we began motoring down the slow-moving river, Max, the captain, steered us closer to the forest. Our guides pointed out iguanas and river turtles sunning themselves on logs.

We also saw monkeys. First, there was a troop of howler monkeys. These bigger blackish-brown monkeys moved slowly through the trees. As the boat went under them, they let out loud bellows. Our guides told us these monkeys could be heard as far as 2 miles (3.2 km) away.

A larger male, the alpha, snapped branches and tossed them into the water below at us.

Howler Monkey Cano Negro Reserve

The Golden Monkey

Upon closer look, we noticed something strange about one of the monkeys. One of them looked different. Instead of a blackish brown, it had much lighter fur that was a gold/orange color.

Our guides explained that we were indeed seeing something special.

This monkey was a young female that they had seen before. She was born with a genetic mutation (of recessive genes) that causes less pigmentation in the fur. So instead of having dark fur like the rest of the troop, she has a golden hue.

Orange howler monkey

Jason explained that this is the only one they know of in the area but that there have been three or four reported in Costa Rica. In the whole world, there are only around nine monkeys like this. Other than the color, they are completely normal and accepted by the group.

After a long pause trying to get good photos of the golden monkey, Max throttled the boat slowly against the current. We saw more howler monkeys and many caimans but also a lot of birds.

Ringed King Fisher

Some that we identified were the Great Egret, Ringed kingfisher, Amazon kingfisher, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Green Heron, Turkey Vulture, Montezuma Oropendola, Collard Aracari, Sungreb, Wood Stork, and Anhinga. The Anhingas are interesting birds that have a bill that can spear fish. They are most often seen drying their wings on logs.

Anhinga Cano Negro river

Our guides told us that birds congregate year-round in the wetlands but especially during dry periods.

Other Wildlife

During the approximately two hours that we spent on the river, we saw some other interesting wildlife as well.

On the underside of a tree branch we saw a family of long-nosed bats. They were sleeping together in a curved line. Jason told us that they position themselves this way to look like a snake. This keeps away predators. Each bat, we learned, can eat up to 2,000 mosquitoes per night!

Bats Rio Frio

We also saw many medium sized green basilisk lizards. These are sometimes called Jesus Christ lizards because they can sort of walk on top of water. Alvaro explained that their webbed feet create tiny air bubbles that help keep them off the surface of the water. With some speed, they can travel over the water for up to 6 or 8 meters (20 to 26 feet)!

There was also another type of monkey we encountered, the spider monkey. These were much more shy than the howlers. We saw one troop swinging through the branches with their long arms. Our guides explained that these monkeys only have four fingers and that the fifth one was eliminated through evolution.

Spider monkey

After returning back to the base camp, everyone was excited for lunch. The staff had been busy preparing traditional casados (plates with rice, beans, chicken or vegetables, salad, and plantain chips). For the kids, there were either chicken or fish fingers.

Traditional Lunch Costa Rica

Trapiche Demonstration

After a hearty lunch, we all loaded into the vans. But there was one more surprise. Just down the street, we stopped at a small farm.

As we shuffled through an old wooden corral, the guides showed how they traditionally grind sugar cane to make juice and molasses (called tapa de dulce ). We then got to try some of the agua dulce (cold sugar cane drink).

Trapiche tour

On the other side of the corral, we took seats on simple wooden stools. The guides served us raw cacao beans alongside some freshly brewed coffee. For those willing to try it, a shot of local guaro (liquor made from sugar cane) was also offered up.

This farm stop was just what we needed for the long van ride back to La Fortuna and the perfect way to end our tour.

Hi, we are visiting La Fortuna in November and are very interested in your trip to Cano Negro. Can I ask please if the boat will visit the lagoon in November or just stick to the river? Or do some tours visit the lagoon and some not? If so can you recommend one who does visit the lagoon please. We are happy to book this through you, but just want to clarify this first.

Hi Mark, the boat tour we did only goes along the Rio Frio. From our understanding some tours do visit the lagoon but it is seasonal and depends on the water levels. This year water levels have been low in waterways around the country so it might not be accessible by boat in November. Hope this helps, if you do end up wanting to book on the river tour, you can email us your info (date, number of people with ages of kids, and pick up location) at bookings(at)twoweeksincostarica(dot)com

Hi, thanks for the information, we would still like to do the trip. While I am happy to book through you, can you tell me who you went with so I can check the details of there full trip please. We will be four adults but just would like to see the details on their web site

Hi Mark, We’ll send you an email with the information now. Thanks!

Now folks dont have to choose between LF and MA on a short trip. Arenal has it all !

Is there a difference between the on-water tour provided by the various companies? What sort of vehicle is used to drive to/from the waterfront? Please send me details; we are interested in early February for 2 adults.

Hi Katie, Let us know if you would still like information on this and we can send it by email right away.

Most tour companies take you in a shuttle van to the river. The boat portion of the tour is similar overall. We would pick a tour company to use based on the quality of their naturalist guides.

Hi Jenn and Matt, I am interested in a Cana Negro boat tour that includes the wetlands (refuge). There are two of us (no kids). We need a ride from our hotel in La Fortuna. We want to do this trip on the 5th of March. We would be happy to join 3-4 people to bring the cost down. Please give me the total price for this option, as well as details of what it includes. If this is too expensive, we might just do the regular boat trip. Can you recommend a company that has small groups (not more than 10) and the price. Btw, is there a difference between the refuge lagoon and the river in terms of how it looks, wildlife and birds. Thanks a lot,

Hi Lotus, The only Cano Negro tour we book right now only goes to the river, not the wetlands. We have actually never been to the wetlands ourselves so can’t compare the two. The regular river tour was excellent, though, in terms of wildlife viewing. The cost for a private tour in 2024 is $228/adults, $160/child ages 4-11 + 13% tax. The tour company doesn’t have an in between option where you could join 3-4 more people. It’s just the private OR regular group tour, which can be up to around 30 people if the boat is full. They do also have a canoe tour if you’d be interested in that. If you’re interested in booking still, just let us know and we can send you an email.

Hello, my husband and I are going to visit Costa Rica for a month next April. We planned to visit Cano Negro but we are still hesitating between staying in a hotel there for 2 nights (we would be arriving from La Cruz) and taking a boat tour with a local guide or doing like you and taking a guided tour of La Fortuna , our next destination. What are the pros and cons between the two options? P.S. your site is wonderful for planning a trip! Sonia

Hi Sonia, We have never stayed overnight close to Cano Negro but there really isn’t much there so it may be better to just do Cano Negro as a day trip from La Fortuna.

Another option would be to stay a couple of nights somewhere like Maquenque Ecolodge . This isn’t at Cano Negro but is on a beautiful river with lots of wildlife so is a similar experience. That lodge has a few different activities that they offer, making it a good place to spend 2 or 3 nights. Hope that helps!

How to Get to Tortuguero: The 6 Transportation Options

If you are wondering how to get to Tortuguero, Costa Rica, you’ve come to the right place!

Tortuguero is a bit different than a lot of towns in Costa Rica because it is not directly accessible by car or shuttle. Yeap, there are no cars in this village.

Instead, it is possible to get here by plane from San Jose or by boat from La Pavona.

We have visited Tortuguero several times and have figured out the 6 best ways to get here.

So let’s go through each option and find the best route for you!

Tortuguero Transportation at a Glance

Step One : Drive with rental car, take a private shuttle, take a shared shuttle, or take a public bus to the La Pavona water taxi launch near the Caribbean Coast.

Step Two : Take a water taxi to the town of Tortuguero (takes one to two hours)

Step Three : Walk to your hotel in town

*Alternatively you can skip steps one and two and opt to take a domestic flight to Tortuguero *

Want to save all the hassle of planning? You can book a 3-night getaway to Tortuguero from San Jose with transportation included .

Boat from La Pavona to Tortuguero

The small village of La Pavona serves as the gateway to Tortuguero .

Unless you opt to take a domestic flight directly to Tortuguero, you will need to take a public or private water taxi from La Pavona.

I will explain all the different ways to get to La Pavona in the next section. But first, once you get to La Pavona, here is what you can expect.

Public Boat Timetable

To Tortuguero : 6:00am, 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:30pm.

From Tortuguero back to La Pavona : 5:00am, 7:00am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm.

Tickets cost between ₡3.000- 5.000 ($5-10) per person depending on the amount of luggage you have.

This ticket can not be purchased ahead of time. There is a ticket office at the dock where you need to purchase this in person.

In our experience, it occasionally books out so it is best to arrive early and expect that you might have to take the next boat if it is too full.

Travel Time

The boat ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes during the rainy season . It can take up to 2 hours if the water level is very low in the Tortuguero canals due to low tide or dry season.

La Pavona has a small basic restaurant, a small shop with things like ponchos and bottled water, and restrooms that cost about 50 cents to use.

Additionally, it is possible to take a private boat service from the La Pavona dock. This will cost a lot more (up to about $20 per person one way), but this is the best option if you can’t get a spot on the public boat.

The one private service I know of is called Fersa. They run daily at 9:15am, 11:15am, 12:45am, 3:15pm, and 4:15pm.

If you’d like, you can contact them, their Whatsapp number is +506 8831 6401 or you can reach out to them via  their Facebook page.

I don’t suggest paying for anything ahead of time. I do not know if they have a secure booking system.

Additionally, you can always contact your hotel in Tortuguero. They deal with this on a daily basis and can most likely organize boat transportation for you.

You really do not want to have to spend the night at La Pavona. There is not a single hotel here, so you would have to sleep in your rental car.

In other words, make sure you are on the last boat for the day or you are kind of stuck.

However, I have read that there is free WIFI and they keep the bathrooms at the dock open all night. So, if you do get stuck here and need to sleep in your vehicle, it’s not THAT uncomfortable.

Things to Consider

  • It is best to bring as little luggage as possible
  • If possible, opt for an oversized backpack instead of a suitcase
  • It can be a bit difficult to get in and out of the boat if you have mobility issues

Now let’s go through each transportation option to find one that is best for you. …

Option #1: Rental Car & Boat

Best for:  People who want the flexibility of having a car for onward travel plans

Your first option is to drive your rental car to the secure La Pavones parking lot and then take the water taxi to Tortuguero.

Pros of Rental Car

  • It is the most flexible way of getting to the La Pavones lot
  • It is the easiest way to continue your onward travels to your next destination

Cons of Rental Car

  • You will be paying to keep your rental car at the La Pavones lot for the number of nights you are in Tortuguero. So, not only are you paying for a rental car you aren’t using but you will also be paying the parking fee.
  • The drive here is a bit of an adventure (especially if coming from San Jose)

Rental Car Info

You do not need a 4×4 to get to La Pavona. However, an SUV with decent clearance is suggested due to the hilly and winding roads.

We suggest renting your car with Adobe Rent-a-Car. They are our favorite local rental car company that is upfront with their prices and has excellent customer service.

We also have a 10% car rental discount plus other great perks from Adobe to pass on to you.

Check Availability and Book Your Rental Car with 10% Discount

Parking Your Rental Car at La Pavones

There is a fenced-in and guarded parking lot at the La Pavones boat terminal.

The parking lot is massive, so there is no need to pre-book tickets.

It costs 6,000 colones per night (about $12) to leave your rental car here. You can pay for this upon arrival.

The Drive from San Jose

From the San Jose International Airport , it takes approximately 3 hours to drive to La Pavones Harbor.

However, just keep in mind that it could potentially take a lot longer depending on the traffic you hit in San José and the road work that seems to inevitably always be happening on Route 32.

The drive here from San Jose is a bit intense. You will begin by driving around the outside of the city. The roads can be very confusing and a bit scary if you aren’t familiar with driving here.

Once out of the city, you will continue on Route 32. This road is a highway in the sense that there is a decent amount of traffic and cars go fast. But, it is probably way more curvy than a lot of highways you are used to.

Toward the beginning of your drive, you will have to pay a toll before going through a tunnel. You can pay in  US dollars or colones .

I like Route 32 because it is a cloud forest and always has a bit of moody feel to it.

After about one hour on Route 32 you will come to the town of Guápiles. Here you will take a left and continue northwest towards La Pavones.

This part of the drive goes through several small towns. It is mostly a low-stress route and I think it is very pretty.

The last part of the drive is unpaved, but the road is well-matted down and is easy to drive.

The Drive from La Fortuna

The drive from La Fortuna is nice and mostly stress free. It will take 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic.

You will head east out of the main downtown area onto Route 4. Just stay on Route 4 for about 1.5 hours until you meet up with Route 32. On Route 32 you will experience a bit more traffic.

In Guápiles, turn left and continue north east towards La Pavona.

The Drive from the Southern Caribbean Coast (Cahuita & Puerto Viejo)

From Puerto Viejo or Cahuita it will take about 4 hours to drive here depending on the traffic.

You will drive north on the main road until you reach the city of Limon. Traffic can get more intense here (this is the main Caribbean Coast export terminal so there are a lot of 18-wheelers).

You will turn left to head west on Route 32 until you reach the town of Guápiles. Turn right in Guapiles to head to La Pavona.

Things to Note

  • Waze is the best free app for driving directions in Costa Rica.
  • Put La Pavona, not Tortuguero, as your destination in your GPS.
  • Leave as early as possible in the morning so that you will have plenty of time to catch a water taxi even if you hit traffic.

Option #2: Shared Transfer

Best For : Solo travelers or couples. People who don’t want the stress of driving or the price of flying.

A shared shuttle service is a good option because everything is taken care of for you.

These transfers will take you by shuttle and then by boat to the village of Tortuguero.

This takes the stress out of having to park your car at La Pavona or organize the boat ticket on your own.

  • Shared Shuttle from San Jose to Tortuguero
  • Shared Shuttle from La Fortuna to Tortuguero
  • Shared Shuttle from Puerto Viejo to Tortuguero

Option #3: Flight

Best For: People who would like the fastest and easiest route to Tortuguero. Not on a tight budget.

Sansa Airlines offers direct flights to the Tortuguero Airport from the domestic terminal at San Jose International Airport twice daily.

Price: This typically costs about $120 per person.

Flight Time: The flight takes about 30 minutes

Considerations:

  • The domestic terminal in San Jose is not located in the main international airport. It is a 5 minute walk away. Give yourself a few hours between your international and domestic flight.
  • If you don’t do well with small planes, this is not for you.
  • If you want amazing aerial views, this is for you.
  • If you are short on time, this is the fastest way to get to Tortuguero.
  • If you are on a tight budget, this option is not for you.

Option #4: Packaged Tours to Tortuguero

If this all seems a bit overwhelming to you, you might want to consider taking a multi-day tour to Tortuguero from San Jose.

This is a great option if:

  • You don’t want to rent a car
  • You want to take the stress out of planning everything yourself
  • If you are flying in and out of the San Jose International Airport and want to add a visit to Tortuguero on to the beginning or end of your trip.

Option #5: Private Transfer

Best For : A large group or family

With a private transfer, you will take a comfortable bus just for your group to La Pavona. From La Pavona you will need to organize the boat on your own.

We work exclusively with Adobe Transfers. They are a trustworthy company with excellent drivers.

From downtown San Jose to La Pavona will cost a few hundred dollars.

This seems like a lot, but it is for the whole bus (which fits up to 14 passengers). So, if you are a big group this is most likely the most cost-effective option.

Option #6: Public Bus to La Pavona from San Jose

If you are on a very tight budget it is possible to get to the La Pavona dock by local bus. However, there is no direct route and it can get a bit complicated as far as timing everything correctly.

You will need to take the bus from San Jose to Cariari and then switch to a bus that goes to La Pavona.

San Jose to Cariari

  • Depart from : The Caribbean bus terminal (Caribeños or Gran Caribe) in Barrio Tournon.
  • Note : Later departures won’t reach Cariari in time for the last bus to La Pavona. Take the 6:30 am or 9:00 am bus to be safe.
  • Ticket Information: Available at the terminal counter for approximately $3.50 / ₡1600.
  • Route Length : It should take about 2 hours to get to Cariari, but it could take a lot longer with traffic

Cariari to La Pavona

  • Departure Point: Buses to La Pavona wait at the Cariari bus terminal. Look for guides or locals at the terminal for assistance. In rare cases, check for buses outside the terminal.
  • Departure Times: 05:00h, 09:00h, 11:30h, 15:00h.
  • Ticket Information: Purchase tickets on the bus from the driver for about $2.20 / ₡1100.
  • Additional Note: La Pavona is the last stop on this route.

More Info About Tortuguero

  • You don’t need to spend a ton of time in Tortuguero. I think that two nights (four at most) is enough time to see everything.
  • However, I definitely think it is worth visiting even though it is a hassle to get to. It is just such a unique place.
  • The best time of year to visit Tortuguero is between July and September . This is the dry season on the Caribbean and the best time to see the main attraction of the area (turtle nesting).
  • One of the best things you can do in Tortuguero is to take an early morning guided canoe ride through the Tortuguero River canals . You’ll likely see a wide variety of wildlife in this protected area. If you do this you will need to pay for entrance into the Tortuguero National Park as well as your boat tour. I suggest taking advantage of that admission and take a hike through the national park in the afternoon.
  • Tortuguero is a small town that doesn’t have any cars. You will need to walk everywhere.
  • Keep in mind that a lot of the more high end hotels are not located directly in downtown Tortuguero, but on the shore across the river. To get into the downtown area most of these hotels provide a boat service. A lot of the mid-range to budget-friendly hotels are directly in town.
  • There are no ATM’s in Tortuguero and not every place takes credit card as payment. So, make sure to get some cash in USD or Costa Rican colones ahead of time.

Conclusion: Transportation to Tortuguero

In conclusion, getting to Tortuguero can be an adventure, but overall I think it is worth it. The village is amazing and the boat ride feel like you are going to Jurrasic Park.

Now that you know all of this, which transportation option will you choose?
