The Tuscan Farmhouse: A Journey Through Time and Tradition
Italy has many gems and the entire region of Tuscany is one of them. Nestled amongst the rolling hills, lush vineyards, and charming paesini that dot the landscape, you’ll find one of Tuscany’s most iconic countryside staples. The Tuscan farmhouses are called “ case coloniche “, or “ poderi ” if they have estates. They are not just a beautiful fixture of the countryside, but steeped in a rich history, reflecting the region’s recognisable agricultural heritage and evolution of construction.
We’re taking you on a journey through Italy, and Tuscany ’s past and tradition, exploring the history of the famous Tuscan farmhouse, their role in agriculture, and how they offer an authentic way to experience Tuscan life up close and personal , as you plan your trip.
Planning Your Tuscan Adventure
Before delving into these remarkable historical landmarks, you’re probably still deciding how to get to Italy , to embark on your Tuscan farmhouse adventure. Tuscany is easily reached from most of Europe usually for reasonable prices. However, if you’re coming from further afield or somewhere served by fewer airlines, those costs can be higher. Tuscany is a developed, affluent region so think about how you can save money for the trip !
Rather than splashing a big chunk of your budget on the flight you could consider booking via an online provider. Typically they’ll give you access to better offers , convenience, and a full picture of when and where you could fly from, including adding stops to save money. When you look at eDreams flights , you’ll find they provide live price updates and a convenient and affordable way to reach Tuscany from operators around the globe. Tuscany is well connected with the rest of the world, as Florence and Pisa are international airports .
Tuscan Farmhouses – Yesterday and Today
Where tuscan farmhouses began.
The history of Tuscan farmhouses can be traced back to the Etruscans , an ancient civilization that thrived in Tuscany over two thousand years ago. The Etruscans were skilled farmers who terraced the hillsides, cultivated vineyards, and tamed the land for generations. Evidence of their agricultural prowess can still be seen in the agricultural layouts and practices that continue to define Tuscan farming today and make up the groundwork of the region’s agricultural past.
Medieval and Renaissance Influences
During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Tuscan farmhouses evolved in response to changing agricultural needs and architectural trends . These farmhouses were typically constructed from locally sourced materials like stone, bricks, and timber, reflecting what we now see as the region’s rustic charm, but influencing the stout, broad structure, with trademark thick wooden beams and open plan layouts of Tuscan farmhouses. They had to feature sturdy, compact designs that could withstand the demands of agricultural life while providing shelter for farmers and their families.
The Role of Farmhouses in Agriculture
Tuscan farmhouses served as the central hubs of agricultural activity throughout time . They were not only places to live but also integral to the functioning of the farm. Surrounding the farmhouse, you would find fields of wheat, olive groves, vineyards, and pastures for livestock. The ground floor often housed stables , storage rooms for crops, and cellars for wine and olive oil production. The upper floors were reserved for living quarters, or additional storage in most cases.
Agriturismo: A Modern Twist
In recent decades, Tuscan farmhouses have found a new lease on life through the concept of “agriturismo.” “ Agriturismo combines “agriculture” and “tourism” , offering travellers a chance to experience rural life while staying on working farms . It’s a way to immerse oneself in Tuscan traditions, savour locally produced food and wine, and even participate in farm activities – it offers a sense of simple living that many find enchanting and relaxing.
Farmhouse Stays vs. Agriturismo
While both farmhouse stays and agriturismo experiences provide an authentic taste of Tuscan life, they differ in their emphasis. Farmhouse stay s are focused on providing comfortable accommodations within a historic rural setting . Travellers can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside and explore nearby townships and castles at their leisure, in a more traditional holiday setting.
Agriturismo experiences are deeply rooted in agriculture . They are working farms that use part of their estate to rent accommodation to tourists. Some agriturismi organise visits to the cellar, vineyards, olive groves and at certain times of year guests can participate in farming activities, like the grape harvest in September and olive picking in November. This hands-on approach allows visitors to connect with the land and gain a deeper appreciation for the daily life of Tuscan farmers.
Staying in a Tuscan farmhouse or an agriturismo will also give you a chance to try the locally sourced food , from cheese to wines, olive oil, jams, honey. And better understand how they are produced.
Experiencing Tuscan Life Up Close
Tuscan farmhouses and agriturismo experiences offer a unique opportunity to slow down and savour the simple pleasures of life , particularly Tuscan living. Waking up to the sounds of chirping birds, dining on farm-fresh meals prepared with local ingredients, and taking leisurely strolls through vineyards and olive groves are the essence of the farming lifestyle and surroundings that are so well-loved by Tuscans and their visitors, alike.
These experiences provide a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of modern life we’re often used to. They allow travellers to disconnect from perpetually watching screens and reconnect with nature , fostering a sense of well-being and tranquillity that is quintessentially Tuscan .
Tuscan farmhouses are not just charming buildings, but living testaments to the region’s agricultural history and timeless beauty. Whether you choose a farmhouse stay or an agriturismo experience, you’ll discover that these rustic retreats provide a gateway to the past and an authentic taste of Tuscan life.

The Best Agriturismo Farm Stays in Tuscany in 2024
Farm produce at Agriturismo Mormoraia.
Agriturismo, a concept that Tuscany has both pioneered and perfected, is basically the combination of a farm or vineyard and a hotel or self catering accommodation.
The agriturismo Tuscany experience can these days mean a stay at anything from a rustic family run farmhouse to top of the range luxury farm hotels with fine dining restaurants and spa facilities .
Though quality agriturismi can be found all over Italy the Tuscan countryside has been most synonymous with the luxury agriturismo and vineyard hotel model.
This tends to mean it is more expensive than other regions but it really has most of the best agriturismi in the entire country, and therefore the entire world.
Tuscany perfected the kind of food and culture tourism from where the agriturismo idea evolved many years before anyone else, and standards are still consistently high across the board.
These days a high percentage of Tuscan agriturismi are organic, many of them, as mentioned above, are a combination of farm and vineyard, and many will also provide educational classes in things like cooking and wine tasting .
The vast majority are also very much family-friendly , some will have specific facilities for kids but even if not, children are some of a good agriturismo’s happiest guests, and they always come away having learned so much.
Tuscany has nearly two thousand agriturismi, so to save you (a lot of!) time we have chosen, and fully reviewed, what we consider its best 25 for the 2024 season:

Or, not sure where exactly you’ll be going yet? Take a walk below with us through some of Tuscany’s most lovely rural areas, with details of all our recommended agriturismi in each area.
1) CHIANTI:
The Chianti region, just south of Florence , is the heart of Tuscany, and all that can be said of Tuscany is also even more true when applied to this, its most iconic sub-region, in terms of the classic agriturismo experience and lots more besides.
Stay in an 11th century hilltop castle in Chianti, anyone? Castello La Leccia.
Chianti is roughly speaking in the centre of Tuscany; the swathe of countryside between the cities of Florence, Siena to the North & South, and Arezzo and San Gimignano to the East & West.
Chianti is very much synonymous with the wine of the same name, but the exact geographical area for both is still something of a source of debate.
Historically the name Chianti only refers to the municipalities of the 13th-century Military League of Chianti; Radda, Castellina and Gaoile.
But the name Chianti is officially also given to wines from the above areas plus the areas of Tavarnelle in Val di Pesa, San Casciano, Greve and parts of Barberino Val D’Elsaw, and also two areas in neighbouring Siena, Poggibonsi and Castelnuovo.
So in general terms the Chianti region is now usually seen as that central stretch of countryside between the cities of Florence and Siena and almost as far as Arezzo to the East.
How To Get to Chianti:
Near to Florence the SR222 or New Chiantigiana road leads down into Chianti from Ponte a Ema, avoiding the Firenze-Siena Highway. If you’re near Siena the best way to get to Chianti is to again avoid the Firenze-Siena Highway and take the Old Chiantigiana road north.
You don’t have to travel far from Florence or from Siena to be in the heart of the Chianti region, with such notable towns as San Casciano in Val di Pesa , Greve in Chianti , Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti all within roughly an hour’s drive of both.
A Little History:
For thousands of years Chianti was a heavily forested, relative backwater, and though a rich area for hunting, first for the Etruscans then for the Romans, it remained on the sidelines of history until late medieval times.
Its aforementioned position near Florence and Siena led it to be at the centre of many medieval battles between those two rival cities and most of the old fortifications and walled towns you will see dotted around have their origins in that era.
As the Renaissance era began though Tuscany generally became more peaceful and the hills and valleys of Chianti were cultivated with orchards, olive groves and of course vineyards.
It also too became a favourite countryside retreat for noble families from the cities, and many of their magnificent villas are still there to be seen today; an early precursor to the agriturismo culture perhaps.
Where in Chianti To Go:
The first stop for many visitors is the central hilltop town of Greve in Chianti , very much the heart of Chianti, and a lively, cultured town that makes a great introduction to the area, especially in terms of food and wine.
It is particularly famous for its Enotecas, which, though fairly widespread across Tuscany and indeed in other forms throughout Italy , are something of an art form here.
Perhaps Greve in Chianti’s most famous enoteca – Enoteca Falorni.
Enotecas are basically food & wine shops but are very much an antidote to modern convenience stores in that they do much more than just sell.
A chat with the staff in any one of these establishments will educate you on all aspects of local wine and food, and which goes with which. You will usually be offered samples of both before you buy.
The agriturismo Chianti experience is an obvious compliment to the enoteca culture, and they indeed are very similar.
Though the extra advantage of the agriturismo is of course the ability it gives to see those hidden first steps from farm to table and grape to bottle.
You’ll find too that the owners of any agriturismo and/or vineyard hotel in Chianti will be equally as enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their craft, and many also provide wine tasting and cooking classes .
Beyond that obvious starting point, there are so many richly historical towns around that it almost seems unfair to pick favourites. If forced to though we might pick the ancient Etruscan town of Castellina in Chianti and the medieval fortress town of Radda in Chianti as places very much guaranteed to impress.
The divine Castello Volpaio, Radda in Chianti.
An off-the-beaten-track mention too should go to the insider favourite; Volpaia, just a few km from Radda. It’s a tiny medieval hilltop village with a 12th-century winery & hotel at its heart.
The hotel is an incredibly charming place to stay. Check it out for yourself here.
Moving east from Radda, towards Arezzo, around the town of Castelfranco di Sopra, in summer you will see what are likely the best lavender fields in the whole of Italy.
To really appreciate Chianti’s lovely countryside having a car is highly recommended, more so of course if you are staying actually in the countryside.
Though many of the main touristic towns are serviced by public transport from Siena and Florence, a car will allow you to fully experience the enchanting landscape, plus allow some nice little discoveries. Volpaia for example is inaccessible by public transport even from nearby Radda.
Cycling is very popular in Chianti, and Tuscany generally, and it could be said the entire area is one big cycling trail. It is hilly though as you might imagine and very hot in summer, none of which though seems to put many people off.
There are also many hiking trails in Chianti, perhaps the ultimate one being the climb from near Greve in Chianti to Monte San Michele , the region’s highest point at over 800 meters. It’s a fairly strenuous climb to the top but even from lower altitudes you can enjoy some really magnificent views.

2) near san gimignano:.
(You’ll find our agriturismo recommendations for near San Gimignano below)
San Gimignano’s iconic medieval towers.
The most famous of all of Tuscany’s medieval hill towns; San Gimignano, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1990, is a genuine treasure.
Its spectacular, fortress like setting, its 14 towers and its ancient streets, alleys and squares give shining reminders of the economic and cultural richness of the region in medieval times.
How to get there:
San Gimignano is south west of Florence and north west of Siena. If you’re near Florence you can head south down the Firenze-Siena Highway before turning off on to the SP1 at Poggibonsi.
Continue on the SP1 for about 20 minutes and you’ll be greeted by the sight of the famous towers above you. From Siena, again take the main highway to Florence north until Poggibonsi and along the SP1.
The town is a famously inspiring place, and very much on Tuscany’s tourist trail, so if you’re looking for a restful piece of rural idyll you certainly won’t find it in San Gimignano’s Piazza del Duomo on a Sunday afternoon!
Having said that, as most tourists visit San Gimignano on tour buses from Florence and Siena, if you stay in the town itself or at a nearby agriturismo you can rise early and take a walk/cycle/drive into town in the quiet of the early morning when you can have it more to yourself. In the evenings too, when the buses leave, the town becomes a far more pleasant place to stroll around.
Just as nice close up – San Gimignano.
Its grandiose towers date from between the 11th and 13th centuries and though in the earliest times they were built as refuges from rival armies they then started to be constructed as nothing more than a display of power and wealth.
This turned into a sort of arms race where every noble family of the time simply had to commission their own tower in San Gimignano to be worthy of a place in local high society. They once numbered over 70 of which only 14 now remain.
Of these 14 towers, visitors are only allowed to scale the 54-meter-tall Torre Grossa, which, as you can imagine has stunning views over the pale red and orange rooftops below and the rolling Tuscan hills and green countryside that surrounds.
San Gimignano’s piazzas are magical; the Piazza della Cisterna with its 1,000-year-old drinking well and the Romanesque cathedral of Piazza del Duomo with its gothic era Biblical-themed frescos are wonderfully evocative sites even with the midday tourist hordes.
Outside the Town:
Any sensible visitor to this part of Tuscany shouldn’t only stop at the town and move back to Florence or Siena; You can choose from a great selection of other small towns to visit in the area; Terricola, Montaione, Orciatico, Peccioli, Montecatini Val di Cecina & Casciana Terme to give some examples.
The countryside in general in the area around San Gimignano has a wealth of those classic Tuscan scenes of winding roads, vineyards, cypress trees and olive groves.
Citadel of Castelvecchio.
The ancient European pilgrim trail of Via Francigena runs through San Gimignano too, and you can hike sections of it near the town. Along the way you can get to visit the ruins of various stop-off points for the devout – Pieve di Santa Maria in Cellole for example or Santuario della Madonna di Pancole. By the gates of the town itself, you can also visit the remains of a 12th-century pilgrims’ shelter.
La Riserva Naturale di Castelvecchio is also nearby San Gimignano and is a terrific place for wilder, less beaten path hikes . It also has a wealth of local wildlife, especially birdlife, including some rare short-toed eagles and peregrine falcons.
It also contains the ruins of the medieval Citadel of Castelvecchio which sits high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the reserve.
And speaking of castles, if staying in one sounds more interesting than staying at an agriturismo, you can check out castle hotels in Italy here at Manor Castles.
The Food & Wine:
Chianti is of course the classic Tuscan wine but around San Gimignano a white dominates; the light and generally inexpensive Vernaccia di San Gimignano .
The region is also famous for its saffron, it produces what most people say is Italy’s best, and you’ll find it flavouring much of what you will be served in traditional restaurants and of course in some of the quality home-cooked meals you can enjoy at an agriturismo.
A lot of Cinghiale (Wild boar) is also eaten around here, and you will find it in all sorts of concoctions; soups, stews and even salami. Especially in salami in fact; it is served almost everywhere and a visitor to this part of Tuscany will usually be coerced into sampling it at some point.
Here are our choices for the best agriturismi near San Gimignano in 2024:
Agriturismo Macinatico, San Gimignano
Agriturismo Il Castagnolino
Fattoria Di Pancole
Agriturismo Mormoraia

3) near siena & val d’orcia:.
(You’ll find our agriturismo recommendations for near Siena & Val d’Orcia below)
These low hills of greyish-brown eroded clay dominate the landscape giving a slightly mysterious, otherworldly feel to the area
There is even something of a desert region south of Siena; The Accona Desert, to the south and west of the lovely town of Asciano.
Despite the generally harsh environment though a surprising amount of the land is cultivated using irrigation techniques.
It is mainly for pastureland and cereals, though the area is also famous for its white truffles, and you’ll find less of the olive groves and vineyards so typical of other areas of Tuscany.
That is until you come a little farther south and to the rich green and fertile Val d’Orcia. Around the Orcia River which gives the valley its name is a picture-perfect landscape of classically Tuscan rolling hills and great fields of lavender & sunflowers.
There are many vineyards too; the vineyards of Brunello are deservedly world-famous, and compete with the up-and-coming, nearby, Val d’Orcia DOC vineyards.
Val d’Orcia was also an important part of the famous pilgrim route to Rome; the Via Francigena, and such has been the cultural and historical influence of the area that it is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You can enjoy some of Italy ‘s most lavish countryside while also getting a sense of the rich history of Val d’Orcia by taking the time to discover the very medieval Pienza, historically known as “ Ideal City”, the small fortress town of Castiglion d’Orcia, the stunning hilltop castle at Radicofani, the ancient walled town of Montalcino or the beautiful Romanesque Abbey at Sant’ Antimo.
How To Get There:
The area is broad so taking any road south from around Siena would be ok, though possibly the best thing is to go along the Strada Regionale 2/Via Cassia on the main route to Rome.
Then at Monteroni d’Arbia you could head east towards Asciano or west towards the little town of Ville di Corsano and start exploring the smaller roads. Or continue farther down to where you can go west towards Montalcino or east into the heart of the Val d’Orcia.
Like in the rest of Tuscany, there is a limited public bus system to the main settlements but having a car is far more worthwhile, all the more so if you are planning an agriturismo stay.
Where To Go:
The pleasant town of Asciano is a nice introduction to the area.
It has much of its medieval walls still intact and many historical buildings in the town centre.
Its highlight is the Palazzo Corboli which contains the Museum of Etruscan and Sacred Art. It is a beautiful building and the museum is small and intimate but you’ll find many interesting artifacts from archaeological digs of Etruscan sites plus more recent art; sculptures and paintings from the 13th century onwards plus some interesting 14th-century frescoes.
South of Asciano there is the Monte Oliveto Maggiore one of Italy’s most inspiring monasteries. Founded in 1313 by the White Benedictines, known as such for their white robes, it remains in operation today, and allows visitors.
The setting is spectacular, high on a Crete hill surrounded by cypress trees and the large building complex still feels distinctly medieval inside, with frescoes depicting St. Benedict by Signorelli and Sodoma adorning the walls.
You may also get a chance to hear some of the monk’s sublime Gregorian chants echoing around the grounds, all in all a very interesting and affecting place to visit.
Like San Gimignano further north, Montalcino is another town on the famous Via Francigena pilgrim route, but it is perhaps more famous for producing one of Tuscany’s and Italy ‘s most celebrated wines ; the 100% Sangiovese Brunello di Montalcino .
The town is also a striking sight, again on a hilltop with the Rocca di Montalcino towering above it. It is a small place but contains two impressive old churches; the Church of Sant’Agostino and the Church of Sant Egidio, both built in the 14th century.
Sant’Antimo Monastery.
Just outside of Montalcino lies another fine, still functioning monastery – Sant’Antimo monastery – which is also worth a visit, and moving to the southeast will bring you to the fertile wine-producing region of Val d’Orcia.
The first town you might visit there could be San Quirico d’ Orcia on the northern edge of the valley, another stop on the Via Francigena with an equally rich religious and cultural history.
Other places of note are the nearby spa town of Bagno Vignoni, and the gorgeous Renaissance town of Montepulciano at the eastern edge of the valley, on the borders with Umbria.
In between those there is the famous Renaissance town of Pienza, which has many sights, including its main Piazza and Duomo, and the former Pope’s Palace and Bishop’s Palace.
It might get the most visitors of any place in this area but is an interesting, inspiring place that is not to be missed.
The wines of Val d’Orcia mightn’t have the international stature of the Brunello di Montalcino but at agriturismi and vineyard hotels here you will generally find a variety of Sangiovese and Trebbiano red and white wines while the area of Montepulciano is acclaimed for its red Nobile di Montepulciano .

What is an Agriturismo?
Agriturismo is a combination of two Italian words – “agricoltura” and “turismo” – which translates to “agriculture” and “tourism.”
Agriturismo is a concept that originated in Italy and refers to a type of accommodation that allows you to experience life on a farm or vineyard.
These properties offer the opportunity to stay in rural settings, participate in agricultural activities, and sample locally-grown produce.
They offer a range of accommodation from rustic farmhouses to luxurious villas, delicious farm-to-table meals made from fresh, local ingredients, and some of them offer a range of activities such as hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
Many agriturismos have expanded their offerings to include cooking classes, wine tasting experiences, and cultural tours, providing you with unique and authentic travel experiences.
If you’re looking for a rustic Italian getaway, an agriturismo in Tuscany may be just what you need.
Best agriturismo in Tuscany: An overview
You’ll find agriturismos almost everywhere in Italy, especially in the south, in Sicily, and in the mountains.
The majority of them, however, tend to be in central Italy, with Tuscany and Umbria being well known for this type of stay due to the picturesque countryside, rolling hills, and charming mediaeval towns.
Tuscany’s landscape is characterized by rolling hills, cypress trees, vineyards, and olive groves.
It’s a region known for its stunning scenery, rich cultural heritage, and delicious cuisine.
When it comes to agriturismo in Tuscany, there are countless options to choose from.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, an active vacation or a culinary adventure, there’s an agriturismo that can suit your needs.
From luxurious villas to cozy cottages, you’ll discover a haven where you can relax and unwind while enjoying the best of Tuscany’s countryside.
Pros and Cons of staying at an Agriturismo
Before you choose to stay at an agriturismo, you need to consider some pros and cons.
As previously stated, agriturismi are country houses that are usually located in idyllic rural areas with stunning views of the countryside.
This could be an amazing experience, but it could also be inconvenient if you want to explore nearby cities and towns.
It also means that, in almost all cases, you’ll need your own car to get there.
While some offer shuttle service from the train station, the beauty of an agriturismo is that it’s surrounded by countryside, which means there aren’t always public transportation options.
Unlike hotels, agriturismi are often family-run businesses, which means that guests receive individual attention and care.
However, agriturismi may not provide the same amenities as hotels, such as room service, a fitness center, or a 24-hour front desk.
My best advice when choosing your agriturismo is to double check what they’re offering:
Not all agriturismi have restaurants that serve delicious home-cooked meals made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Not all agriturismi offer a range of activities, such as wine-tasting tours, cooking classes, and guided hikes, allowing guests to experience the best of the Tuscan countryside.
Plus, many agriturismi are not open all year but have seasonal closures, and in some cases, you may face a language barrier.
If you do not speak Italian, communicating with the staff and other guests may be challenging.
Overall, if you choose accordingly, staying at an agriturismo in Tuscany is an unforgettable experience that allows you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and enjoy the simple pleasures of the countryside.

An Italian Mama's Guide to Italy
The best Tuscany agriturismo for families: 15 farm stays you and your kids will love (2024 edition)
A handpicked selection to help you pick the best Tuscany agriturismo for families with kids: tried and tested farm stays in Tuscany perfect for kids and grownups.
A stay in an Italian farmhouse ( agriturismo ) is one of the best ways to enjoy Tuscany with kids.
An agriturismo is a traditional farmhouse repurposed to welcome guests.
They do so in many guises: some operate as a B&B, some have self-catering apartments, some have a restaurant on-site, some offer activities and some allow you to just sit back and relax.
The hosts are sometimes very present and sometimes very discreet and the facilities can be anything from rustic and simple to very luxurious.
A little bit like hotels, agriturismo covers all parts of the spectrum for style and price. However, they all tend to have something in common: the rural location and a strong link with the territory.
Agriturismo or agriturismi (plural) are typical of central Italy and they are the perfect place if you want the freedom and space of a villa and the comforts of having your host on-site.
Finding a family-friendly agriturismo in Tuscany is easy if all you want is a beautiful setting.
However, the choice is so vast that it becomes quickly overwhelming and it is not always easy to identify which structures are welcoming to kids.
I know this from my own experience but also from that of the lovely members of my Facebook Group ‘Travel Italy with kids’ (which you are welcome to join – see below)!
In the group, the request for recommended agriturismo in Tuscany for families with kids comes up often and the advice also is plentiful!
Before I wrote about what to look for when choosing an agriturismo .
In this guide, you find the selection of the best ones recommended so far.
This list is based on first-hand experience of each Agriturismo by real families who stayed there with their kids, including my own family travels of course!
For each, I have included a link to booking.com so you can check prices/facilities/book on a well laid out, English language site, something smaller agriturismo do not always have.
If you want even more help or you have any questions, please in my FREE Facebook group about traveling to Italy with kids: I will be happy to have you there and the tips from me and the other members are FREE!

Full Day Tuscan Countryside and Wine Tasting
- Experience the authentic charm of Tuscany with our Full Day Tuscan Countryside and Wine Tasting Tour
- Enjoy a scenic ride through the stunning Tuscan countryside, exploring historic towns like Volterra
- Indulge in a local wine-tasting session at a traditional farmhouse, complete with a light lunch
- Visit San Gimignano, known for its iconic medieval watchtowers, and immerse yourself in its rich historical and cultural heritage
This charming excursion is perfect for those who have already visited Florence and Pisa, and want to see what the true Tuscan countryside has to offer.
Board your comfortable transportation for a relaxing, scenic ride through the beautiful countryside of Tuscany as you make your way to Volterra. This hilltop village, known for its picturesque charm and historic significance, dates back to Etruscan times and was famously featured in Stephanie Meyer's widely popular Twilight book series. Embark on a journey through the heart of Tuscany and witness the beauty and charm of this iconic region come to life before your eyes.
Stand in Piazza dei Priori and be greeted by the clocktower and stately Palazzo dei Priori, Volterra's massive 13th-Century town hall. Admire the remnants of the Roman Theater and the 2,500-year-old Etruscan wall, built when the town was an affluent exporter of prized materials throughout the Mediterranean basin. One of these materials, alabaster, is still carved today by skilled artisans famous for their beautiful alabaster works. Other highlights include the Pinacoteca Comunale, an art museum displaying important Renaissance works.
Indulge in the Tuscan delights as you continue your journey to San Gimignano, where you'll have the opportunity to experience a wine tasting at a local farmhouse and savor a light lunch of traditional Tuscan cuisine.
As you approach San Gimignano, you will see what the town is known for, its numerous Medieval watchtowers. The towering structures of San Gimignano were symbols of power and prosperity during Medieval times, and they continue to captivate visitors today, offering glimpses into a bygone era of Tuscany's rich history.
Stroll through the narrow streets of San Gimignano, following in the footsteps of history, and pause in its charming piazzas to soak in the atmosphere of this medieval gem. Wrap up your experience in the Tuscan countryside with a taste of award-winning gelato (not included) before returning to the port.
This very popular tour sells out fast. Book early so that you don't miss out on this unique experience of the genuine flavors of Tuscany!

Full Itinerary
Shop at florence’s historical market.
Our tour stands out from other cooking classes in Tuscany as it enables you to create your meal from start to finish – and that includes buying the ingredients. We will meet at the front of Santa Maria Novella train station and take you to Florence's historical market where the locals do their daily shopping. You will have the chance to meet the bakers, the butchers and the farmers who are selling vegetables from their fields. Their stalls are full of items such as fresh fruit, veg, cheeses, cured meats, balsamic vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and many other Italian specialities. As you shop for the ingredients you will be using later on that day, you will also learn how to choose the best seasonal products (and, of course, have a taste or two).
When the market is closed on Sundays and public holidays, in season you can instead pick the fresh ingredients from the vegetable garden at our country estate
Prepare your meal.
Once we’ve finished shopping we will head to the Walkabout Florence kitchen, located amidst the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside on a private estate, to begin the lesson. This isn't just a demonstration – we believe cooking classes in Tuscany aren’t complete unless you roll up your sleeves and become an active participant. With some help from our chef, you will actually take part in creating a full traditional Tuscan meal. You will learn to make real Italian fresh pasta by hand (with ingredients such as freshly-laid eggs), a meat sauce using vegetables from right outside the door and a bruschetta with fresh bread, home-grown tomatoes and the farmhouse's own extra virgin olive oil. After this, it’s time to take a break as you enjoy the bruschetta with a glass of Chianti wine.
Learn Tuscan Traditions
Next you will learn how to prepare traditional Tuscan roast pork and potatoes using fresh herbs collected from around the farmhouse. As a final treat, you will learn to create the creamy, coffee-flavoured dessert that is a favourite among so many cooking classes in Tuscany: Tiramisu.
Sit Down and Eat
It’s now time to taste the fruits of your labours as you and the rest of the group sit down to enjoy the wonderful meal you created together. The lunch will be accompanied with a wine from the region to compliment the flavours of the food you have prepared. At the end of your dinner, a driver will be waiting for you to take you back to Florence. You’ll leave with a belly full of food and a head full of memories that will last a lifetime.
At the end of the meal it is possible to buy cookery accessories, cook books, balsamic vinegar, extra virgin olive oil and the Chianti Classico wine used during the class!
Know before you go.
- Due to uneven and steep surfaces, we are unable to accept anyone with walking difficulties or wheelchair users
- We regret that vegetarian or other alternative dietary requirements cannot be catered for

Loved this cooking experience
by: Hope Berte on Walkabout
Amazing…this cooking experience far surpassed our expectations. We were four adults and three teenagers and everyone agreed it was great. Gloria our guide met us at a convenient location, we walked through the streets of Florence to the central market where we sampled and picked up fresh ingredients for our class. Gloria was so informative, friendly and outgoing we really enjoyed our time with her. Don’t book this tour on a Sunday because the market is closed and it was definitely a highlight. Next we walked a bit further and boarded a bus to the countryside farmhouse only minutes away from the city. There we met our chef instructor Carmela who was amazing, funny and upbeat! We made delicious bruschetta, ragu sauce, potatoes and pork loin, tiramisu and of course fresh pasta. We paired our meals with delicious Italian wine. The view from the farmhouse was breathtaking and a walk around the vegetable garden topped off a perfect day! Thank you Gloria and Carmela! You two make a great team!
Fun & Beautiful Setting!
by: Kim Younghans on Walkabout
One of our favorite activities while in Florence! We enjoyed the beautiful setting that is just a 12 minute bus ride above Piazza Michelangelo, but you feel like you’ve gone a world away. The view is gorgeous! We learned a lot about making pasta and Italian cooking in general. Our kids enjoyed this activity as well. Luca was entertaining and Carmella was amazing. She liked to dance & sing. We liked that we didn’t feel rushed. We had time to sit and eat and get to know others in our group, take pictures, etc. Just as an fyi, the market is closed on Sundays. We didn’t mind missing that, but keep that in mind if you wanted to do the market beforehand. All the dishes we made were delicious and honestly this might have been the best meal we had in Florence. Highly recommend!
Best cooking class ever!
by: Jess Miller on Walkabout
Went with my boyfriend and we had the best time ever! Lavi was so friendly and Carmella was such a queen, we loved the food we made because we used authentic Italian ingredients and had the most amazing pasta! I would recommend this to anyone coming to Florence!!
Delicious fun in Tuscany!

A breathtaking view, scrumptious ingredients, prepping and cooking with master cooks Luca and Mary will guarantee a perfect day in Tuscany! Novice to experienced cooks will enjoy the day and go home with delicious recipes. Two thumbs way up for Luca, Mary, and the entire staff!
You MUST do this!! Fantastic
by: Robert C on Tripadvisor
This was by far the best thing we did on our trip to Italy. If you want a day of laughter, incredible food, the company of like-minded travelers, and the chance to learn how to make authentic Italian dishes, then you do not want to miss this class. Lucca, our hilarious guide and lead chef was an amazing leader kept us entertained and engaged in the class. Mary, his wonderful co-chef, was a gem who showed us the correct way to cook delicious dishes with fresh ingredients. We loved the initial tour in the central market in Florence, where Lucca introduced us to all the vendors and purchased the ingredients for our meal while educating us about them. The villa where the class was held was spectacular, with beautiful views of the countryside outside of Florence. The food we cooked was so amazing; one of our favorite meals in Italy. The best part...I was able to come home and make the pasta in my own kitchen with stellar results. Don't miss the opportunity to take this class; it is worth every penny!! We
Amazing Experience!
by: Kathleen M on Tripadvisor
This was hands down our best tour and experience while in Italy! It was such a fun day, and Luca was sooo funny and also a great teacher. We start in the Central Market in Florence, and walk through talking about the different ingredients and foods used for the meal, and got a bit of history on each. They then take you from the city center to their estate which is a quick 20 minute ride into the hillside. The facilities and views were amazing and beautiful. The food was so incredible and it was fun having a part in preparing everything. We would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone we know going to visit Florence! It was a wonderful day!
Guaranteed to be the BEST part of your trip to Florence!
by: Arielle on Tripadvisor
Out of our entire trip in Florence, our cooking class and lunch with Luca was by far my favorite part of our time in Italy. From our time in the market, to our time in the kitchen at the Tuscan Farmhouse, we left feeling like we got a taste of authentic Italy. We laughed, we cooked, we learned and felt so in awe of the atmosphere you have all created with this business. Luca is absolutely fantastic and if you are in Florence - do not miss this opportunity!! It is fun, energetic, informative and truly a life changing day! Luca, we LOVE you!!
A highlight of our trip
by: Margaret B on Tripadvisor
This cooking class with Luca and Carmela was a highlight of our stay in Florence. The day was well organized and so much fun. Luca and Carmela are very engaging and kept the group laughing all day. The food was delicious and the instruction made it all very approachable. The setting is absolutely stunning, perched on the hillside overlooking the outskirts of Florence. We would highly recommend this class!
Tuscan food and view
by: Jamie B on Tripadvisor
If you are interested in Italian cooking, beautiful scenery and great food, I would book this tour. This excursion offered a chance to see a local Florence market to select ingredients (samples included!). You are then whisked away to a beautiful Tuscan kitchen and view for a hands on cooking experience where you will enjoy a meal based on the fruits of your labor. Note: this is a pretty full day tour. We were dropped off around 4pm.

Amazing experience - highlight of a 4 week trip
This was an amazing afternoon/evening for our entire family (kids age 9&11). It was a short 15 minute drive outside the city into the rolling hills overlooking Florence. Nice to get away from the crowds and the heat. The farm is small, and the operation is built for these tours. Amazing patio overlooking a grove of fruit trees and vegetables. We started with learning about gelato, then moving through step one. After that we moved outside to the pizza oven where we learned about dough making. After making dough, we moved back to finishing the gelato, and after that we rolled out pizza dough and made/ate the pizza. Once everyone cycled through making pizza, we finished off with all-you-can-eat gelato as there were approx 20 people in the group with 10 batches of various flavors. Cris, Thomas and Tiziano (our cooks) were amazing. Funny, informative, and helpful. 10 out of 5 starts, would book again!

FIND OUT MORE
My Farmhouse Cooking Class is a full immersion in Tuscan cuisine, including wine tasting and a scenic tour of the countryside. The morning will be dedicated to learning how to prepare a genuine four course Tuscan meal (which will also be your lunch), and how to recognize genuine Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The afternoon will have us visiting a family winery where we’ll be tasting Chianti wines, and also contemplating the iconic Tuscan countryside, where we’ll stop for a photo or two.
Our venue for the day is a small family farm immersed between vineyards and olive groves. The farm is particularly known for the production of Olive Oil and Saffron. They also raise chickens and grow vegetables. The owners are Camilla and Fabrizio, who live on the farm with their three children. Apart from their farming activities, Camilla is a chef, and Fabrizio a certified sommelier.
Camilla has been giving cooking classes for fifteen years, and she’s rightly proud of her traditional Tuscan dishes. The emphasis is on healthy recipes, which will be easy to reproduce when you’re back home. Many of the ingredients are freshly picked from the farm’s vegetable garden, as of course the olive oil will be from the farm’s own trees. I care to add, that their Olive Oil production has recently received some very important recognition in the Italian press.
Your Tuscany cooking class comprises of:
1. Starter course including homemade Tuscan flat bread. 2. Pasta dish with homemade noodles. 3. Main meat course. 4. Sweet. 5. An Olive Oil tasting, including a short lesson on how to distinguish quality EVO.
And…after all this “hard work,” what better than to take a seat and enjoy your meal?
Last but not least, the scenery and peaceful surroundings are everything you could desire. So if the weather allows, the cooking class and lunch will be held outdoors overlooking the vineyards and olive groves.
The Afternoon in Tuscany
We say goodbye to Camilla aroun2 2.30pm, and within minutes we’ll be immersed in the hear of the Tuscan countryside. Wherever you cast your eyes, vineyards, olive orchards and Cyprus trees are blended into the surrounding woodland with outstanding aesthetic taste. I’ll explain the countryside from an agricultural and historic point of view, and we’ll make a stop for photos and contemplation.
Next stop will be our family winery, where we’ll be enjoying a seated tasting of the estate’s Chianti & Super Tuscan wines. The emphasis of their production is on Chianti traditions. This means fruit forward wines with moderate barrel aging.
Tour duration: eight/nine hours door to door.

Private Tuscany Wine Tours
A private Tuscany wine tour isn't just about about reaching the next winery. It's about enjoying the journey as an experience in itself. The beauty of Tuscany has much to do with nature, but man has improved what nature gave. It was during the renaissance that a new philosophy of combining farming with landscaping was conceived, and the concept still exists today. This is where you'll find some of the world's most breathtaking scenery, making each turn of the meandering roads a new and vibrant experience. Oh! The wine's pretty good too.

Siena and San Gimignano tour with Tuscan farmhouse lunch
Departing from Florence you'll head south into the heart of Tuscany and the beautiful medieval city of Siena . The journey will last around an hour and a half, passing through the Tuscan countryside along a main road. A living testament to Italy’s medieval past, Siena is a wonderful showcase of Gothic architecture, from the intricately beautiful Duomo with its elegant striped bell tower to the stunning red-bricked Piazza del Campo and grand Palazzo Comunale (town hall). The historic central area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Siena is considered to be Italy’s best preserved medieval city.
You will meet your private guide on arrival into the city and spend the next three hours exploring the charming cobbled streets and experiencing the authentic side of Siena. The tour will take you to the Duomo, famous for its Gothic carved marble façade and pavements. You'll also visit Il Campo square where Siena’s bareback horse race, the Palio, is held every year. The square is also home to the imposing Palazzo Comunale. While walking from place to place, your guide will explain the city’s notorious contrada system which still wields an important influence on daily life.
After exploring Siena, you will continue on with your driver toward San Gimignano to stop in the countryside for a traditional Tuscan farmhouse lunch, paired with local wines. After lunch you will head into San Gimignano itself where you will have some free time to explore. Perched in typical Tuscan style on top of a hill, the village is dominated by a forest of 12th and 13th-century towers — built by wealthy families within the village as competing symbols of their wealth. At its peak, San Gimignano is thought to have boasted some 72 towers, though just 14 remain standing today. As well as the 12th-century Duomo, the pretty medieval streets are lined with many speciality food shops as well as small piazzas where you can enjoy a coffee or gelato and soak up the charming atmosphere and stunning views.
In Siena, ask your guide to point out Nannini, one the city’s best bakeries, famous for its typically Sienese ‘Ricciarelli’ biscuits. Equally, if you are touring with children, you can spend time with your guide searching for the tell-tale signs dotted around the city indicating the boundaries between the different contradas.
When exploring San Gimignano, a popular option is to climb the Torre Grossa attached to the 12th-century Palazzo Comunale for some spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. There are 218 steps to reach the top and your ticket will also include entrance to the civic museum. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy paying the entrance fee or if there's a large queue to climb the tower, we recommend heading up to the Rocca di Montestaffoli (signed simply as the ‘Rocca’). Accessed from the top of the Piazza delle Erbe, the small park contains the ruins of what was once a Florentine fortress, complete with a small tower that can be climbed for free. It offers equally stunning views across the surrounding countryside and olive groves below.

More about italy.
As a treasure trove of artistic and historical wonders, Italy offers timeless beauty and cultural richness. In the central Tuscany region, the streets of Florence are filled with Renaissance architecture, with a skyline dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, a Gothic art masterpiece. Within the northern Lombardy region, the fashion mecca, Milan, offers an abundance of art galleries and museums, with the most sought-after sight being The Last Supper, a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea in the central Lazio region, Rome is home to the ancient Colosseum, an amphitheater that played host to gladiatorial games, and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple. Perched atop cliffs that overlook the Bay of Naples in the southwestern Campania region, the coastal town of Sorrento is known for its lemon groves, notably some of the best lemons in Italy, they are used to produce the splendor that is Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Take a gondola ride through the romantic canals of Venice to explore one of the most unique cities in the world, built on more than 100 islands in the northeastern Veneto region. Savor the sweet symphony of Italy's gastronomic legacy and culinary mastery that spans centuries, with authentic Italian gelato, pasta, and pizza.
