I don't typically write reviews but feel compelled to share my experience so others don't experience the same. This week I made a booking for my family, leaving next week, last minute all inclusive. Everything was booked, paid for, and arrangements were made. Something happened with our booking and I was called 2.5 hours later to be told that they lost the booking somehow and we would have to pick something else. When I asked how this happened all I was told was "these things sometimes happen". No one took any accountability for it. The agent I was dealing with told me he would follow up with me the next day to discuss options. When I didn't hear from him by mid morning, I began calling the main line and asking for a supervisor. I kept getting the same script, these things happen sometimes and there's nothing we can do. The original agent finally called back around 3:30pm and left a message that everything was canceled. My messages to customer service remain unanswered and my email via Facebook says that it seems my issue was resolved and to let them know if I still needed to talk to someone. This is the poorest level of customer service I have ever experienced. Not only the error with the booking, but the complete lack of follow up and follow through and not one person taking accountability for this. We now have to rebook for different dates and pay significantly more money because someone dropped the ball, and they don't even have the decency to call me back personally. I would never recommend Tripcentral again.

We plan an annual trip with two other families. In the past, we've used other travel agents however this year we reached out to Beth at Trip Central to help us out. Having 5 people in our family creates challenges when looking for a destination. Beth provided us a number of options and got us the best rate available. The other families booked with someone else and ended up paying more! She provided information on places to go and things to see as well as airport information. This year's trip was very memorable and we owe a big thank you to Beth for all her help! We will definitely use her for our future travel needs.

Photo of Sarah P.

Beth has been great over the last two weeks. She helped us to book a fantastic vacation and even found lower fares than we expected. Thanks for putting customers first.

Photo of Elysha P.

Beth McKinley is BY FAR the best travel agent you will EVER have the pleasure of dealing with. I've been going to Beth for a few years to book several different types of trips.. ie. Peru Adventure, Euopean flights and most recently our destination wedding and honeymoon. She is very diligent, prompt and very well organized. She is easy to get a hold of and is always so much fun to deal with! I will ALWAYS use Beth whenever I travel!! :)

I recently booked a vacation and was charged above the quoted price. Customer service staff refused to refund me the difference owed. I would not recommend booking with this company.

First class service all the way... attention was paid to every detail.

I chose to book a vacation for $1300 with trip central, I provided them with my credit card information and the payment promptly. Two weeks later I received a credit card alert from my bank that trip central had charged my card and an additional $3298. I called my travel agent and she said she had accidentally used my credit card information to book a trip for another client because my info was saved on her computer. She said the matter would be sorted in 30 minutes and she'd call to give me an update. An entire day goes by and I received no follow up. I emailed the next day and she called me and said not to worry the charge won't' go through because she entered my CVV code wrong. The next day the charge went through. I emailed and received no response. I called to speak to another agent about the matter he said to email the customer service department. I emailed Thursday, sent a follow-up Friday and still received no response. I ended up calling customer service, after a 15-minute argument they agreed to give me $50 credit towards my NEXT trip. I will NEVER book with this company again. They are careless towards the security of client credit card information. This is completely unacceptable. This charge went over my credit limit freezing my account and blocking additional preauthorized payments to go through. I also have overcharges from the bank and late payments. I am astonished that they think $50 credit towards my next booking is an acceptable apology. They are ridiculous to think I would ever trust this company again.

Please do not book with tripcentral. They are bunch of thieves that will take your money and show zero accountability towards customers. We booked for our Xmas Cuba vacation in May. We put a $1000 deposit down for family of 4 and we were supposed to pay the rest on Nov 6th, 2017. The hotel we reserved was Warwick in Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba. The travel agent booked us with Hola Sun. Then Hurricane Irma hit Cayo Santa Maria in September and our resort was hit really really badly! Guess what it's November 4th and the resort we booked for, is closed without any definite re-opening date!!! In September we contacted Trip Central and let them know we are uncomfortable going to a resort that has been hit this bad by hurricane. They said if we want to change we should pay a penalty. We said fine, let's book something else. They said since you were booked with Hola Sun, you have to stay with them, we said fine. They couldn't give us anything comparable in terms of price and star rating. They wanted more money plus a penalty of $200 for changing our resort. We said we can't afford to go any higher than anticipated, then give us a voucher for our deposit amount so we can use in the future, they said they can't do that. They just wouldn't work with us in any shape or way possible!!! They called us on Nov 3rd saying we have to pay the balance but the hotel is still closed. Yes that's right, the hotel is NOT functional at this time and they are "hoping" they will resume by Nov 15. I said OK then call us back on November 15 when the hotel is up and running and we will pay the balance. They said nope! You have to pay now or your deposit is gone. I argued how can we pay for something that is still closed. Why can't you charge us when the hotel is open. At least give us an assurance that the hotel will be open. They couldn't give us any assurance. All they wanted was our money. We regrettably passed on our deposit because we just couldn't pay another $5k remaining for a place that still being repaired. This vacation would have been our 20th anniversary for my husband and I who actually got engaged in Cuba. We were taking our kids there to celebrate this occasion and we saved for a long time to make this happen. We are truly disappointed at trip central and Hola sun.

I would score lower than one star if I could. We made two separate bookings to the Dominican Republic with TripCentral.ca, one for my daughter's family, and one for my wife and myself, From the beginning, our agent, Yasmin Sosa, fouled up our bookings with incorrect information, and required repeated calls and emails to get things right. She then emailed us itineraries clearly showing the 21st of December as the due date for us to pay for the balance of the cost of our trips. But on the EVENING of the 15th of December, she left a telephone message informing my daughter that the balance of her trip was due that date! Apparently she never thought about letting my wife or myself know this; perhaps she just could not give a damn whether her employers got their money or not. On calling back it turned out she was not even at work to answer phone calls! But a courteous gentleman named Carl at the TripCentral.ca phone number confirmed that the 21st of December was indeed the correct date. Just to be sure, I agreed with his suggestion to be transferred to Yasmin Sosa's number, and I left her a message requesting a call back. Amazingly, she DID call back, only to insist that the 15th was the correct date. I pointed out that she had put it in writing that the date was the 21st, but she denied that despite my offer to send her screenshots, or copies of the files, that she had issued. Then she claimed that she had spoken with my daughter on at least two occasions, one "just the other day", wherein the date confirmed to be the balance due was 15 December. I knew this to be a lie, and challenged Yasmin Sosa about it. She then said that the balance was due BEFORE 21 December, and so it was due NOW, the 15th - I suppose because the 15th happens to be a date that precedes the 21st! I paid the balance for both of our trips then and there on the telephone, but I would never, never, never deal with this company again. It has been far more work, and possibly more money, than had we done our own searching and booking directly with airlines and hotels. Even if we did save money, it definitely wasn't worth the panic, the stress, and the discourtesy. This incompetent and dishonest employee should not be working in any kind of service environment, and certainly not where potential consequences of error are in the thousands of dollars for each customer. As long as TripCentral.ca continues to employ people like Yasmin Sosa, I urge all readers to avoid TripCentral.ca unless you want to risk kissing your money, and your vacation plans, goodbye!

Photo of Sam B.

Tripcentral.ca lacks accountability and takes zero responsibility for any issues that may arise after booking through them. They like to side-step the issues and play the blame game. Once they have your money, they feel no obligation to ensure customer satisfaction. This is true even in cases when something occurs that is not the fault of the traveler whatsoever. My friend and I were overbooked and tripcentral did nothing to fight for us against the tour operator to get us options that were fair and reasonable. Instead, they hid behind the general message of, "we are just the middleman", and proceeded to actually yell at us, speak condescendingly towards us, and even place us on hold mid-sentence when all we were trying to do was resolve an issue that was caused as a result of the incompetence of both tripcentral and the tour operator. The options they presented to us after overbooking us and not notifying us until weeks later were: 1) relocate to a resort of their choosing (and receive a complimentary stay at the original resort in the future minus flight costs) *** but the resort of their choosing was nonnegotiable, which made no sense since the free accommodation was offered to us by the original resort we had booked as compensation for inconveniencing us. So we should have been able to book another resort of OUR choosing (and pay the difference in costs) AND get the 7 nights stay, but trip central and the tour operator refused to budge and insisted that if we want the 7 nights stay offered by the resort, we had to go to the other resort they had chosen for us. Complete BS! We researched the other resort and realized it was isolated, newly opened (meaning lots of operational issues are to be expected), the beach has TONS of seaweed, and it is filled with seniors. Not our scene at all! 2) rebook another trip at today's rates (not rates backdated to original booking date - which resulted in costs of more than $150 per person for resorts we wanted) 3) full refund They screwed up and we had to pay the price. Neither tripcentral nor the tour operator lost a single thing. We lost our money for a few weeks, we lost ample time which resulted in other resorts getting booked up, and we lost more time trying to get them to amend option 1 to be fair and reasonable. But to no avail. Thieves. Con artists. I'm not sure why they even exist since everyone can book directly through tour operators and pay the same, if not less. Tripcentral appears to be nothing more than an added step through which they gain a commission and offer you - the patron - absolutely nothing. Never again. No accountability, no respect, no follow-up, and no fight to protect their customer's loyalty. I asked 3 different individuals to call me by today, and no one has. What a surprise! This post is just the beginning, tripcentral. The media world is going to be hearing about this nonsense until someone publishes the story and gives you the attention you truly deserve. Do yourselves a favor: do not book with tripcentral. Terrible, terrible service.

Photo of Rick M.

We have been loyal clients for 3 years - until now. The true mettle of a company emerges when the trip goes wrong. This is when you learn that the company did not confirm the itinerary they gladly sold you. Of course, you learn this once you are in a foreign country and are at the mercy of the local travel reps who are not accustomed to acting with a sense of urgency and delivering high customer satisfaction. Reps simply threw up their hands and blamed one another for the mix up. Trip central failed to deliver customer service. They did not return phone calls when we were unable to get a room at the hotel at which we were 'booked'. And the president of the company has not responded to follow-up mail.

Photo of Fred H.

I'm extremely disappointed with Trip Central for the following reasons. 1. They are suppose to help and advise with your choice of resorts but not once did they comment on the disaster that Club Karey Varedaro Cuba is. They claim they have been to all their advertised resorts but then don't warn clients of potential problems. 2. The pictures and reviews of Club Karey on Trip Centrals' website are totally misleading. The place is unhealthy and a disgrace and should be removed from their site. 3. I received no help from our Sunwing representative when on the second day of our stay I asked them to contact Trip Central and to assist in changing hotels. The answer was pay $1,500.00 each to change. 4. On our return from 14 days of disaster and a complaint to Trip Central their response was... "I did not recommend this resort" That's all the communication we received from them. 5. It would appear that Trip Central is only concerned about getting your money and once they have it your just another notch in their gun belt. 6. No apologies. No form of compensation. NOTHING from Trip Central

1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

' src=

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

Key Things to Know

  • Don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, or Central Park for a mix of history and iconic landmarks.
  • Maximize your time by using the subway for faster (cheap) travel between Manhattan’s attractions. Or walk!
  • This itinerary is completely customizable to your particular interests and the exact amount of time you have in New York City.

One day in New York itinerary

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan.

In my opinion, your one-day NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing. The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day.

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

9/11 Memorial pool in New York City showing names engraved in bronze with buildings and trees in the background.

Statue of Liberty

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)

In my opinion, your New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city.

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a general admission ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket.

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

  • Explore NYC with a sightseeing helicopter tour over Manhattan .
  • Pay a visit to the top of One World Observatory with this skip-the-line ticket .
  • If you’re staying the night in New York, consider this sunset cruise in New York Harbor.

TRAVEL TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Lunch options: where to eat

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request.

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

TIP: Keep track of all of your important travel details with a digital travel planner like this .

Empire State Building

20 West 34 Street | Subway stop: 34 St–Herald Square (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W), 33 St (M)

Many believe visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.

New York City skyline with the Empire State Building.

Times Square

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.

tall building in New York City with a sculpture in front

Rockefeller Center

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Central Park

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

  • Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
  • Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
  • Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
  • End your day with a Broadway show.

View of Washington Square arch from below.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

  • Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
  • Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park if time allows.
  • Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

New York 1-day tours

Want to see the best of New York in a day, but rather leave the planning to someone else? Leave the planning to an expert tour guide.

  • Pack the very best of NYC into one day with this highly rate expert guided tour . See New York’s major landmarks in only 6 hours.
  • Go beyond Manhattan’s major tourist sites with this tour of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem, and Coney Island .

Where to stay

If you’re thinking about spending more than a day in New York, you might be overwhelmed by the many hotel options.

Here are my recommendations for where to stay in New York City:

  • Hyatt Place Midtown South (52 West 36th Street): We loved staying at this hotel. It’s just two blocks from the Empire State Building and just around the corner from the 34th Street – Herald Square subway stop. Book Now
  • For a more boutique-style accommodation try Archer Hotel New York (45 West 38th Street). Book Now

How to get around

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

The bottom line

There are so many amazing things you could fill your day with in NYC that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best. From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

Can’t wait great job

Great article, Darcy! You have prepared an amazing one-day itinerary for people vising NYC along with some great tips to commute within the city. Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

One Day Hong Kong Itinerary for Central and Lantau Island

trip central square one

If you're arriving in Hong Kong on a short flight or by road from Macau/Zhuhai via the mega bridge (or heading back), this classic one-day Hong Kong itinerary makes the most of your time.

The first stop is Lantau Island, where you’ll visit the Big Buddha, the famous Po Lin Monastery, the spiritual Wisdom Path, and Ngong Ping Village. Enjoy a scenic cable car ride that offers stunning views of the island, sea, and the grand bridge.

When heading into central Hong Kong, start at Tsim Sha Tsui, where you can stroll along the Avenue of Stars and take the Star Ferry to admire the beautiful Victoria Harbour. If time allows, explore bustling Hong Kong Central, which blends modern city life with local culture. End your day at Victoria Peak to take in the sunset or the spectacular evening skyline of Victoria Harbour.

Brief Itinerary for Lantau and Central Hong Kong Visit

Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car (0.5 hours) – Ngong Ping Village + Big Buddha + Po Lin Monastery (1-2 hours) – Lunch – Avenue of Stars (0.5 hours) – Star Ferry (0.5 hours) – Central (1-2 hours) – Victoria Peak (1-2 hours).

The itinerary is based on traveling with a private car, allowing you to adjust the schedule or swap attractions according to your preferences.

Travel during public holidays takes longer time at each sight. Drive up and down to the peak is recommended than the cable car or tram ride.

If you plan to use public transportation, you may need to reduce the number of stops and carefully plan your routes.

Hong Kong Car Rental for Touring

Renting an Alphard is the most convenient way to explore Hong Kong. With narrow roads and limited parking, the Alphard's maneuverability is perfect for navigating the city. It also makes pick-ups and drop-offs hassle-free. Booking early may secure an English-speaking driver.
