Visiting Vienna

Hop on hop off bus tours

Sightseeing bus

One of Vienna’s sightseeing buses is a good option if you don’t want to get to grips with the (albeit excellent) public transport system, or if you want a guided hop on hop off tour.

  • The Vienna Sightseeing bus
  • The Big Bus Tour
  • Both take you around the main sites
  • Both offer audio guides, free WiFi etc.
  • Sightseeing tips
  • Review of a Future Bus VR tour
  • Public transport & tours in Vienna

Hop on / hop off bus tours

Quick booking option with a choice of bus services:

(Booking service provided by Tiqets.com*, who I am an affiliate of)

Main options

Both services have begun using electric buses and plan to convert their fleet entirely.

In no particular order…

1. Vienna Sightseeing Bus

Vienna sightseeing bus

(Unmistakably yellow and green)

The Vienna Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off bus follows three different routes inside the city (at the time of writing):

  • Red : this encircles the old town, taking you to/from or past key sites like the Hofburg palace, Kunsthistorisches Museum, opera house etc.

This should be your first-choice route, as it gives you a broad flavor of the best of Vienna. The different stops offer easy walking access to top sights, including those in the pedestrianised center.

  • Yellow : this covers a small part of the Ring boulevard, including the opera house, but also takes you out to the two big tourist attractions away from the very center: the Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces

A good second choice. No trip to Vienna is probably complete without seeing the Habsburg summer palace at Schönbrunn, for example. You also get a peek at the modern architecture around Vienna’s Hauptbahnhof railway station.

Schönbrunn forecourt

(Schönbrunn palace)

  • Blue : this one takes you out to the architectural joy that is the Hundertwasser-designed Kunst Haus Wien as well as the Prater park and entertainment area (home to the Riesenrad giant Ferris wheel), the Danube, Danube Tower, United Nations HQ, and more

Particularly good for kids, if you want to let them loose on the rollercoasters and similar at the Prater and then take an iconic spin on the Riesenrad.

In the warmest times of the year, the buses add a fourth option with the longer-duration tickets: this summer route travels to the wine-growing areas with their Heuriger wine taverns via the Schlumberger wine cellars and rather colourful public incinerator at Spittelau.

That seasonal extra lets you sample the Viennese wine culture and get a glimpse of how outlying villages might have looked before Vienna took over.

Ticket options

A hop on hop off ticket * includes, for example, on-board WiFi and an audioguide (with English a language option).

You choose between 24, 48, and 72 hour tickets. All include those red, yellow, and blue routes and are valid for the designated number of hours from the moment you first use them.

2. The Big Bus Tour

The Big Bus Tour

(Distinctively red)

The buses of the Big Bus Tour follow two routes (at the time of writing) and have bonus options:

  • Red: this takes you around the Ring boulevard, but also, for example, out to Belvedere and the Prater & Danube area

This is a great option if you’re stuck for time, since you see many landmark sights in one circular trip.

  • Blue: this is the noble route, bordering the Hofburg complex, then bringing you out to the Schönbrunn and Belvedere palaces (but also to Hundertwasserhaus)

All tickets * cover both routes, and you choose between Discover (24hr), Essential (48hr + bonuses), and Explore (48hr + more bonuses) options. The additional bonuses available include, for example, a guided walking tour or short river cruise.

The Big Bus folk also offer an evening tour as a separate product * (not a hop on hop off ride but a tour with a live guide and English commentary). Vienna looks lovely at night with the illuminated old buildings, especially when the Christmas lights are up.

Other bus tours

Vienna has a few other sightseeing bus tour options that I’ll add as I get to them. For example:

The Future Bus tour

The Future Tour bus

(The stop on Albertinaplatz)

A recent addition to the tour landscape is the hybrid physical and virtual reality Future Bus tour. The one-hour route with audioguide takes you around the west edge of the old town, where many of the city’s major sights live.

You put on VR goggles at several stops to experience, for example, 360 degree reenactments of important historical events. For full details, see my tour review .

Hop On Hop Off Vienna Bus Tours

tourist bus tour vienna

The following post will cover each of the hop-on-hop-off bus tours available in Vienna, as well as discounts and the pros and cons of these services.

  • Is a Vienna Hop on Hop off Bus Tour Worth it?
  • Hop-on Hop-off Vienna Bus Tours Compared
  • Night Tram and Bus Tours

IS A HOP ON HOP OFF VIENNA BUS TOUR WORTH IT?

There are a lot of different types of bus tours, but this variety is probably the most popular in the world.

That being said, you might want to consider a few factors before purchasing tickets.

To start things off positively, let’s look into the pros of a hop-on-hop-off bus tour.

If you’re looking for a great way to get around the city with ease, a hop-on-hop-off bus tour might be exactly what you need.

Vienna Sightseeing Double Decker Bus

Here are a few benefits you can expect to enjoy with one of these services:

Jump off at your leisure

The main advantage of this type of bus tour is that you can get off at several stops and explore the area at your leisure.

Once you are done looking around and experiencing various landmarks, you can jump back on the bus and continue your tour.

Live Tour Guides

Most hop-on-hop-off bus tours will have live guides to point out notable landmarks and historic sites in Vienna.

They may also provide interesting facts about these locations if they have the time!

Enjoy an overview of the city

In addition to offering the opportunity to hop off and explore, a hop-on-hop-off bus tour also includes both live commentary and an audio guide with a lot of useful information about Vienna.

tourist bus tour vienna

Although they won’t go into great detail, these tours can serve as an excellent general overview showing you highlights of the city.

Great way to get around

Why pay for taxis, car rentals, or other forms of transportation?

Visitors who plan on taking a hop-on-hop-off bus tour will enjoy anywhere from 9-12 hours per day of transport to each of the major landmarks and other notable areas in Vienna.

After taking the tour, you can continue to use the bus service to get around the city with ease.

This is especially helpful if you end up getting either a 2 or 3-day ticket!

Reasonably priced service

Depending on the length of your ticket (1-3 days), prices typically range from €27 - €49 per person.

Considering that you’ll enjoy both a bus tour and transportation around the city, that’s a pretty good deal.

The longer your ticket is valid, the less you’ll pay per day of service.

For instance, while you might pay €27 for a 1-day hop-on-hop-off bus tour, you’ll only pay a bit more than €16 per day for a 3-day ticket!

As if that weren’t good enough, the 2 and 3-day tickets usually include additional tours and services at no extra cost.

Although there are a lot of great reasons to take a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, there are some aspects of this service that you may want to consider before making your purchase.

Big Bus Vienna Double Decker

Basic commentary

While on these bus tours, you will have access to live commentary and an audio guide which provides a very limited amount of information about the city.

For many people, the details included in these tours will be more than enough.

However, if you’re looking for a more expansive outing that will cover additional historical facts, you may want to combine this service with a guided walking tour of Vienna.

Not the quickest transportation

Due to all of the information provided on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour and all the stops they must make, this is one of the slowest forms of transportation around Vienna.

tourist bus tour vienna

Whether you’re looking for a quicker tour that won’t take as long, or you want to get around the city at a faster pace, you may want to consider other forms of transportation and/or another type of guided tour.

Seating is Not Assigned

Although some bus tours allow you to pay for the specific seat you’ll use while onboard, hop-on-hop-off bus tours offer first-come, first-served seating.

This may not be a concern during slow tourism seasons.

But, if you’re planning to visit when there will be a lot of people using these services, it could become difficult to find a good seat on the bus.

Comparing Vienna Hop-on Hop-off Tours

If you're trying to figure out the differences between each service, this chart will directly compare details such as ticket prices, hours, duration, availability, and of course reviews.

As you can probably see, there are some pretty big differences between these services.

At first glance, it might seem like Vienna Sightseeing is a no brainer with their price and route selection. However, the ratings make it clear that tourists favor Big Bus instead!

What I would suggest is that first timers are going to be perfectly happy and comfortable with a Big Bus Vienna tour.

On the other hand, if you're more familiar with the city, you might want to consider Vienna Sightseeing for the incomparable access to dozens of stops you might not otherwise get to visit!

For more details, make sure to read our post covering how to purchase Vienna Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour Tickets .

NIGHT TRAM AND BUS TOURS

There are currently two-night tours via tram or bus available in this city: one offered by Big Bus Tours and the other offered by Vienna Sightseeing.

Although each outing can be taken individually, they are also included with multi-day tickets from each company.

Please read our post on how to purchase tickets if you are interested in any of the following tours.

Comparing Big Bus and Vienna Sightseeing Night Tours

Both of the companies that offer hop-on hop-off bus tours in Vienna also provide a tour after dark. These night bus tours will not allow you to hop on or off at your leisure, but they do make a few stops for photos and other purposes.

These tours aren't as highly rated as their hop-on hop-off service, and there are undoubtedly a few reasons for that.

The fact that you can't get off the bus at any stop is definitely going to disappoint some travelers, and the length of the tours is also quite short.

Even so, there are a lot of great attractions to see at night or during the sunset in Vienna, so if you're interested in learning more, please read our post covering how to get Vienna night bus tour tickets .

Vienna Sightseeing Tours to electrify its entire bus fleet

The Vienna city tour provider Vienna Sightseeing Tours is converting its entire fleet to electric buses. Vehicles from the Spanish manufacturer UNVI are being used as part of a political and commercial initiative.

  • Vienna Sightseeing Tours
  • Electric buses

Vienna Sightseeing Tours already has three electric buses from UNVI in operation. The company has now ordered 14 more. They will be delivered in the coming months. This will mean that the company’s entire fleet will have been converted to electric drives. The provider of city tours is pushing ahead with the drive transition in its own company as part of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Zero Emission Transport’ project .

At the beginning of June, a total of 32 companies from various sectors voluntarily committed to driving into Vienna’s first and second districts with zero emissions. While the majority of the participating companies are adapting their cars, vans or lorries for this purpose, Vienna Sightseeing Tours will be using fully electric buses in future.

“That’s remarkable,” says Davor Sertic, Chairman of the Transport and Traffic Division of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. “Because on the street, you mainly see smaller electric vehicles such as cars or delivery vans, but no double-decker buses.”

“We are delighted to be part of Zero Emission Transport and thus contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in Vienna,” said Lisa Frühbauer, Managing Director of Vienna Sightseeing Tours. “In the first five years of operation, our 17 electric buses will cover around 2.6 million kilometres and save around 3,100 tonnes of CO2 in the process.”

According to the manufacturer UNVI, the double-decker buses have a range of 200 kilometres thanks to four 72 kWh batteries, which “covers the daily mileage on the three Vienna Sightseeing Tours routes,” as stated in an accompanying press release. The 150 kW electric double-deckers can be recharged at two charging parks in the Vienna city centre.

The second provider of hop-on hop-off bus tours in Vienna also wants to electrify its vehicles: In June, the London-based sightseeing company Big Bus Tours announced that it would be adding another 40 electric buses to its fleet this summer. The XL electric buses with sun decks are set to enter service in London, Paris and Vienna. In the latter two cities, electric buses from the Chinese manufacturer Ankai will be used.

DNC delegates take Pilsen bus tour with Shermann 'Dilla' Thomas on final day of Chicago convention

Evelyn Holmes Image

CHICAGO (WLS) -- As the last day of the Democratic National Convention got underway Thursday in Chicago, around a dozen delegates and their guests boarded a tour bus and headed out to a Southwest Side neighborhood.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

"Today we're going to a very proud Mexican-American neighborhood called Pilsen," Chicago historian Shermann "Dilla" Thomas told the group. "You're going to enjoy the street art so much.

With video images and short walking tours, Thomas, a TikTok sensation, showed off the city with Chicago Mahogany Tours.

"For most of Chicago's history, the West Side of Chicago had the largest population," Thomas said. "Pilsen is also suffering from gentrification."

The tour guided the visitors through the city's communities in an effort to help them see policy in action.

"I want them to see what happens following policies like urban renewal and how people got displaced," Thomas said. "But I also want them to see good things like policies like the infrastructure bill... and how there's more construction and more construction jobs in Chicago."

Thursday's roughly two-hour tour highlighted landmarks and culture in the Latino community with a focus on how immigration built the city.

It's the first time in Chicago for many who went on the tour.

"Me coming from the middle of nowhere in North Carolina, corn fields, pastures and forests, its just wonderful to enjoy being in a city, when I had anticipated something a little bit different," said visitor Gina McGee.

During the convention, several hundred delegates and politicians took the tours, which visited neighborhoods on the Chicago's South and West Sides that are typically not showcased.

"The reason why we wanted to have delegates, folks from all over the country, here is because also, some of the things that affect Chicago affect other places," Thomas said.

Chinatown, Bronzeville, Pullman, Roseland, along with North Lawndale and Garfield Park, were all on the list.

"I was in downtown Chicago only in the financial district, so it's a very different perspective," Boston delegate Liem Tren said.

The tour included the vibrancy of neighborhood street murals and locations of historical significance, along with lunch at an authentic Mexican taqueria, giving a nice boost to a small neighborhood eatery.

Many of the delegates left with a new found perspective of the City of Chicago and a sense of how we are all a part of community.

"I hope you enjoyed seeing Chicago," Thomas said. "Thank you for choosing Chicago for the DNC. I hope you come back."

Harris-Walz to kick off 'Road to Chicago' bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday

Portrait of Kinsey Crowley

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Gov. Tim Walz will kick off a bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday, stopping in multiple Western Pennsylvania spots.

The tour, dubbed "on the Road to Chicago," comes the day before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, the Harris-Walz campaign told USA TODAY Wednesday.

The candidates' spouses Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz will join them on the tour, the first time all four are campaigning together. The group will focus on meeting voters in their communities, stopping at volunteer canvass events and local retailers.

This will be Harris' eighth visit to Pennsylvania this year. The tour is scheduled after Harris is expected to make her first policy-centered speech in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday.

Sign-up for Your Vote: Text with the USA TODAY elections team.

Pennsylvania is a key battleground state

Pennsylvania provides 19 electoral votes (one less than it did in 2020). It was one of a handful of states that switched its vote from Donald Trump in 2016 to the Democratic Party in 2020.

In 2016, Trump won the state by less than 50,000 votes, beating Hillary Clinton with 48.6% of the vote compared to 47.9% of the vote for Clinton.

In 2020, President Joe Biden won 50% of the votes, beating Trump who won 48.8% of the vote.

Harris has already made several campaign stops in Pennsylvania, including her first appearance with running mate Walz. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was another top contender for vice president.

When is the Democratic National Convention?

Harris' western Pennsylvania tour comes as many others in the party are headed to Chicago for the DNC.

The DNC is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday Aug. 22.

How harris-walz bus tour helped the candidates connect with voters.

In November 2019, then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden began an eight-day bus tour ... [+] across Iowa. (Photo by Joshua Lott/Getty Images)

This story was updated on 8/18/24 with information about the bus tour.

Sunday’s bus tour through parts of Western Pennsylvania by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz was an opportunity for them to connect with people in a more personal way that rallies at stadiums and other large venues can’t match.

Harris and Walz were joined by their spouses “for a bus tour across a crucial part of this state, in a political show of force and call to action before Democrats kick off their national convention in Chicago,” the Washington Post reported.

Business leaders should take note of the efforts by the two running mates to inject a more personal touch into what’s become a frenetic race for the White House. Getting closer—literally—to their audiences can help politicians and corporate executives strengthen their image, credibility, and power of their messages.

Creating An Image

Bus tours have important advantages and benefits for presidential and other candidates. They can help make politicians appear more approachable, relatable, and conversational then they would otherwise come across when giving speeches in auditoriums or sports arenas.

Campaign bus tours provide news organizations with good visuals that can result in more news coverage about candidates.

“Bus tours are a staple of [a] campaign season for good reason—in addition to being fun, serving as a rolling billboard and photo opportunity for the candidate or issue, they offer unparalleled immersion into a community or region,” Abbey Watson , who worked in the Obama administration and on different political campaigns, commented in an email message.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Visuals are as important on the campaign trail as a candidate’s message.

“The [bus[ format gives local voters and media significant exposure to the campaign and a great visual that stands apart from the usual rally set up,” Watson observed.

‘Easier To Plan’

“Bus tours are a great way for candidates to tour the major media markets in a swing state. Bus tours can be logistically and financially easier to plan than a tour of a state using a plane. It's easier for local candidates to 'hop on' and 'hop off' for a day or two as well,” Megan Sweeney , a former communications director of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, noted in an email interview.

Political candidates don’t always have to be on the bus though in order for a bus tour to be successful.

"There are times when the candidate doesn't even need to be on the bus for a stop to make the local news. A campaign bus rolling into a smaller market with surrogates is an easy way to reach voters who are often overlooked and gain a headline in a local newspaper,” Sweeney noted.

Challenges And Downsides

But there can be some downsides to this way of campaigning for votes.

“Bus tours are the most challenging event format for a campaign—they take all the typical requirements of producing a rally or other event and combine them with logistics of transporting the candidate, their staff and security,” according to Watson.

There are also security and other considerations to take into account when candidates go on the road by bus.

“Like with any campaign event, it's important to be prepared for counter protests. That's why it's so important to choose a spot for the campaign stop that's secure and alert local authorities as soon as possible,” Sweeney cautioned.

But bus tours are nothing new—Democratic and Republican presidential and other candidates have used the tactic during their races for the White House over the years. They include President Bill Clinton (1996), North Carolina Democratic Senator John Edwards (1996), Arizona Republican Senator John McCain (2000), President George W. Bush (2004) , Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney (2012), President Donald Trump (2020) and President Joe Biden (2020) .

As a whistle-stop campaign train historian, I’ve documented hundreds of politicians over the past 185 years who connected with voters from the back of trains at railroad stations—and by buses. For decades, the trains were the most efficient and effective ways for presidential candidates to connect with voters in small towns and the large metropolitan areas. That is, of course, until buses and plane travel became more effective and cost-efficient for the candidates.

A Bridge Between Two Tactics

Republican presidential nominee Thomas Dewey is believed to be the first national candidate to stump for votes by bus in 1948. It was, in retrospect, a bridge between two campaign travel tactics—trains and planes.

One politician—Lee Dreyfus, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin, combined buses and trains when he campaigned in 1978 across the state in an old school bus that was converted to look like a campaign train.

Are More Bus Tours In Store?

“A bus tour is about as close to ‘retail politics,’ like in the early primaries, as a presidential campaign can afford to get in the three month sprint from the conventions to Election Day,” Michael Montgomery , a political scientist and lecturer in the Department of Health and Human Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, said in a statement.

The route of future bus tours by this year’s presidential candidates or their running mates could depend on various factors.

“I can't imagine either campaign will embark upon a truly national bus tour. I would, however, expect to see something like it from both campaigns—probably built around the VP nominees—in at least the more densely populated…battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Georgia. Nevada and Arizona are obviously also in play but I'm not sure their geography really lends itself to this particular way of campaigning,” Montgomery concluded.

Getting Closer To Business Audiences

Business leaders do not have to emulate politicians by going on bus tours. They could, however, consider other ways to get closer to their audiences and stakeholders, such as showing up in person at meetings instead of appearing via Zoom calls, greeting employees at their offices, or talking with workers on factory floors.

That kind of personal touch could help bridge the distance between those who work in the corner office and company employees.

It would be the political thing to do.
