7 Ways to Fold T-Shirts for Storage & Travel

Published on January 25, 2023 by Ryan Hallstrom · Clothing and Style

Looking for the best ways to fold and store your t-shirts? Here are 7 solid methods to choose from (or try them all!).

Table of Contents

T-shirts are by far the most commonly worn type of shirt on the planet. That means that we often have a lot of them, making them hard to store.

In this article we’ll review 7 ways to fold a t-shirt. Then, after briefly talking about hanging t-shirts, we’ll give our recommendations for storing t-shirts in a drawer and packing t-shirts for travel .

Folding T-Shirts with the Basic Fold

This is the fold you probably already use unless you follow the “bachelor system”– clean clothes get piled on a chair and dirty clothes go on the floor. If that sounds like you, now’s a great time to change.

Lay your shirt on a flat surface.

Fold the shirt in half so that the sleeves overlap.

Fold both of the sleeves over on top of the shirt.

Starting from the bottom of the shirt and going to the collar, fold the tee in half.

Fold in half again.

A completed simple fold

This is perhaps the most basic way to fold a tee.

Ranger Roll a T-Shirt

The ranger roll is a folding method used by military units around the world. You can ranger roll just about any item of clothing. Here is how to ranger roll your t-shirts.

Flip the bottom 3-4 inches of your shirt inside out to form a cuff.

Fold the shirt vertically until the end of the sleeve reaches the opposite shoulder seam.

Do the same thing with the other side.

Then fold the sleeve back on top of itself to make a neat vertical column shape.

Now, you’re ready to roll your shirt, starting from the top (the collar).

Keep the roll nice and tight to maximize the space saving effect of this method.

Flip it over, and tuck the shirt into the pouch you created in the first step.

A completed ranger roll. That wasn’t very hard!

Kondo Folding T-Shirts

Remember the Kondo sock fold we talked about in a previous article? Marie Kondo also devised a clever way to fold t-shirts. Here’s how t-shirts according to her method:

Lay the shirt on a flat surface.

Fold over the left right side of the shirt until the edge touches the middle.

Fold the right sleeve back on top of itself.

Repeat with the left side of the shirt.

Fold the shirt in half (top to bottom). Leave about 3 inches on the bottom exposed.

Now fold from the bottom to the middle of the shirt.

Fold the bottom up towards the collar.

A completed Kondo fold. The advantage of the Kondo fold is that shirts can stand on their sides.

This is a great space-saving technique!

How to Fold T-Shirts With a Panel

Ever wonder how to fold a tee shirt like a pro ? This is how many clothing store clerks fold tee shirts before being displayed.

For this method you’ll need a cardboard or sturdy plastic panel that has roughly the same surface area as a sheet of paper. You can trace a sheet of paper on a cardboard box and cut out a template. Alternatively, you could use a plastic 2-pocket folder.

Place the panel on top of the shirt centered just below the collar.

Fold the left side of the shirt to the right.

Fold the right side of the shirt to the left.

Fold the bottom of the shirt to the top as far as you can.

Slide out the panel.

A completed panel fold.

This method makes it easy to avoid wrinkles!

How to Quickly Fold T-Shirts

This is the fastest way to fold a t-shirt. I learned the quick fold method from a video created by Antonio Centeno over at RMRS .

Folding on a solid surface is especially helpful for this fold.

Start by laying your t-shirt on a hard, flat surface.

With your right hand, pinch the top left side of the shirt about 2 inches down from the collar.

Now with your left hand, pinch the middle left side of the shirt.

With your right hand still holding the top of the shirt, cross over your left hand and pinch the bottom hem of the shirt about 2 inches from the left side.

At this point, your arms should be crossed. While still holding the shirt in both hands, uncross your arms.

Turn the shirt over to the back side of the shirt.

Fold the shirt over to the front.

A finished “speedy folded” t-shirt.

While this method takes some practice initially, soon you’ll be able to fold a t-shirt in seconds!

How to Fold T-Shirts Standing Up

All of the folds we’ve talked about so far require a flat solid surface to perform properly.

What if you don’t have a flat place readily available to use for folding (e.g. you don’t want to clear off the top of your dresser)?

This is where our next fold comes in.

Pick up the t-shirt.

Turn the shirt horizontally.

Bring both hands together to fold the shirt in half.

With the shirt folded in half, rest the shirt on your chest.

Slide your hands halfway down the shirt.

Folding away from your body, fold the shirt in half again.

A completed standing fold.

The standing fold allows you to neatly fold your shirts anywhere.

Hanging T-Shirts

After you’ve found the perfect t-shirt and have bought a few, you have to figure out how you’ll store them.

Hanging up your t-shirts is the easiest option if you have a lot of closet space.

Nothing complicated here. Just make sure you avoid using wire hangers if possible because they can damage your shirts.

Storing T-Shirts in a Drawer

If you don’t have a big closet (or if your closet is full) you’ll probably want to store your t-shirts in a drawer.

In my opinion, the Kondo fold is the best method for storing t-shirts in a drawer. It allows you to stand shirts up on their sides, allowing you to easily see all of your tees with one glance.

Unless you pack too many shirts in a drawer, this method also helps you to avoid wrinkles because it is a pretty loose fold. You can also ranger roll t-shirts for drawer storage, but this can make it more difficult to tell different shirts apart.

Packing T-Shirts for Travel

When packing t-shirts for a trip, the ranger roll should be your go-to option because it allows you to fold shirts compactly.

You’d be surprised how much space you can save with this method!

Final Words on Folding Tees

There are many different ways to fold t-shirts. Spend just a few minutes practicing these methods the next time you do your laundry and soon you’ll be folding like a pro!

Personally, I prefer the panel/retail folding method, but I go a step further and fold the shirt in half to help economize storage space. You don’t need a panel/board for this method, but it does help to keep things neat and uniform.

I’m not a big fan of the quick-folding method, which I first discovered in a Japanese YouTube video circa 2006. Although you can fold a shirt quickly, and it makes an impressive YouTube video, in my personal experience, I’ve found the fold comes apart when moved and isn’t practical for daily use.

Another standing up folding method is one that’s similar to the panel/retail fold: You hold the T-shirt with the back facing you, the top at the top. Grip with both thumbs and index fingers the preferred width, and swing the other fingers on both hands towards you leading with the pinkies. Then, use one of the pinkies to clamp the folds as the shirt is rotated to face you. Re-grip and then shake the shirt a little to help set the fold and get any wrinkles out. With one hand holding the top of the shirt, fold the shirt up from the bottom to the top using your other hand (optional: fold the bottom 2-3 inches first before folding to the top). You can also hold the shirt with the top hand against the body if that’s easier. If desired, the shirt can be folded in half for more compact storage.

So, you’re heading on a trip, eh? But, you’re wondering how to fold clothes for travel so you maximize your space.

There are plenty of folding methods, but you want to ensure your clothes stay wrinkle-free and tightly compact.

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

This post will show you exactly how to fold clothes for traveling so you can have one less worry before your trip.

Let’s get into it.

Is it better to roll or fold clothes in a suitcase?

There is no conclusive answer to this, but most travelers tend to favor rolling clothes over folding them.

There are multiple reasons for this:

  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Save slightly more space
  • Easy to organize

Also, it doesn’t just have to be for a suitcase. Whether you use a suitcase, a travel backpack , or another piece of luggage, the method will stay the same.

So, if you’re wondering how to fold clothes for travel to save space, you should use a rolling method.

How do you tightly roll clothes for travel?

The best way to tightly roll your clothes for travel is the following:

  • Lay your clothing on a flat surface
  • Spread it out evenly and brush out wrinkles
  • As you roll, pull the opposite side away from you to make sure your clothing stays tight
  • Use rubber bands to make your rolled clothing even tighter

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll save a TON of space in your bag.

How to fold clothes to save space for travel

So, each piece of clothing will have its method, so we’ll break this down by each article of clothing:

  • Shorts/Pants/Dresses
  • Underwear and socks

How to fold shirts

Most of this will depend on the weather you’re traveling into, but the process will stay the same.

There are three easy steps to follow:

  • Fold up the bottom of the shirt and fold the sleeves in
  • Fold each side of the shirt toward the middle
  • Roll and seal

Step 1: Fold up the bottom of the shirt and fold the sleeves in

First, find a flat surface and spread your shirt across it. Make sure to spread it out as far as possible and get any wrinkles out.

This ensures your shirt stays wrinkle-resistant while it’s packed.

Next, fold the bottom of the shirt up about 6-8 inches. Make sure it’s on each side because this will keep your shirt tight and rolled up.

Next, fold each sleeve over toward the shirt’s middle. Once you do this, the shirt should form a rectangle, and no other pieces of the shirt should be sticking out.

Step 2: Fold each side of the shirt toward the middle

Next, take half of the shirt and fold it horizontally, so the edge meets in the center of the shirt.

Do the same thing with the opposite side. Both sides should meet in the center of the shirt.

Step 3: Roll and seal

Then, flip the shirt so your hands are where the neck of the shirt is, and start rolling toward the bottom, which you have folded.

Make sure to keep your rolling tight, and pull on the end of the shirt, so it doesn’t bunch up too much.

Once it’s fully rolled, flip the rolled bottom of the shirt out, so it wraps around the rest to create a small cocoon.

And that’s it! This works for every type of shirt you have.

If it’s a dress shirt or a long-sleeve shirt, simply fold the arm up over itself so you can fold it in when necessary.

Doing this is the best way how to fold clothes neatly for travel.

How to fold shorts/pants/dresses

Pants naturally take up a bit more space. But, it ultimately depends if you’re packing shorts, dresses, or pants.

Let’s break each of these down.

How to fold shorts

Shorts are extremely easy to pack. And depending on the size, you may be able to roll them up quickly without any methods.

But, if they’re a bit larger, here’s a great way to roll them.

Start by flipping the waistband down about 4-5 inches (if possible).

Next, flip one pant leg over the other, and begin rolling up from the bottom of the pant leg.

Lastly, flip the waistband over the rolled shorts once it’s rolled up to keep them tight. I usually add a rubber band around my shorts to stay put.

How to fold pants

The process is simple for pants. Lay your pants out on a flat surface like the floor.

Next, fold one pant leg over the other. About halfway up the top pant leg, angle it at about 90°.

Then, start rolling up from the bottom of the pant leg toward the waist. The pant leg you angled will be sticking out.

Last, fold the pant leg you left unrolled over the pants to ensure your roll holds. This form will prevent wrinkles and keep your pants fresh!

How to fold dresses

I don’t have personal experience packing dresses, so I consulted my long-time girlfriend on this one. Here are her brilliant instructions.

First, lay the dress out on a flat surface like you did the other clothes.

Next, fold down the top half of the dress to the middle. Then, fold each side toward the middle as you did with the t-shirts. Then, fold the dress in half vertically.

Last, roll it up from the bottom into a tight package. For dresses, you will need to use rubber bands to help keep them rolled up and to avoid wrinkles.

How to fold underwear and socks

For underwear , follow a similar process to the one described for packing shorts.

Fold the waistband down, then fold the underwear in half horizontally. Last, roll up from the leg and wrap the waistband around the rolled underwear.

For socks , separate them into individual socks. Then, roll up from the toe, and wrap the foothole around the rolled-up sock.

Pack these inside your shoes (if you have a pair you packed) to save space in your packing cubes .

Packing a suitcase or backpack to save space

So, you’ve learned how to fold your clothing. But what about actually packing your clothing?

After all, learning how to properly fold clothes for travel means nothing if you don’t pack them right.

For this, I strongly recommend packing cubes .

Packing cubes not only keep your clothes tight, rolled up and save space. But, they also give you organization.

How to fold clothes for travel? Fit them into a packing cube!

After all, with the different sizes, you can pack your shirts in one packing cube, pants in another, and underwear, socks, etc. in another. These are the best travel gear I (and other travelers) own.

They make it much easier to turn your packing list into a “packed” list. Packing cubes fit easily into your baggage and can be moved around to create more space when necessary.

I recommend Gonex packing cubes . They work fantastically and are durable. But, any brand will work as they all mostly do the same thing.

So, here are some top tips when using packing cubes to pack:

  • Wear your heaviest clothing on the plane if possible
  • Put your largest packing cube in the bottom of your bag
  • If you’re using a backpack and bringing shoes, pack your shoes so they’re in the center of your back. This helps distribute weight better
  • Try sitting your smaller packing cubes in your bag vertically for more space
  • Find packing cubes that compress down even further with an extra zipper

So, you’ve learned how to fold clothes small for travel. What’s next?

And there’s your ultimate guide to folding. In this post, you learned how to fold clothes for a travel backpack , suitcase, or any other baggage you may own.

Hopefully, these tips will help you on your next trip.

Let me know what you think is the best tip, along with any other suggestions you may have! I’m always trying to improve my packing and keep an eye out for the best tips.

How To Fold A Shirt For Travel: Pack To Reduce Wrinkles

How To Fold A Shirt For Travel

When you sloppily cram shirts into your suitcase minutes before a large trip, you’re almost likely to arrive with wrinkles. Instead, pack smartly to save space and avoid wrinkled clothes. Learn how to fold a shirt for travel and other shirt tips for organized hikers. We understand that many of our clients have important meetings scheduled overseas and must dress appropriately for the occasion.

As a result, they are more likely to bring formal shirts like travel shirts and business shirts in their suitcase. The only concern is how to carry them as wrinkle-free as possible. Even if you despise packing, Harvie and Hudson have devised a method for making travel a breeze.

If your shirts keep getting wrinkled every time you travel , we think it’s safe to conclude you’re not using the proper procedure. We’ve discovered a simple way that allows you to spend less time fighting the iron and more time negotiating transactions. If you don’t roll—your shirts—you won’t be able to rock your trip. We advocate moving over folding for the best suitcase storage. When you fold your tops, you get lines; however, you get a smoother finish when you roll them. This strategy also ensures that you make the most of the space in your suitcase’s corners.

As a mainstay of your warm-weather travel wardrobe, you’ll want to arrive at your destination with wrinkle-free garments so you can jump right into the pool. Start with the most basic option for the simplest method to fold your favorite shorts correctly. Fold them in half, with the zipper on the inside and the butt pockets facing outwards so that the two sides meet each other.

Then there’s the tough part: remember to fold in the additional triangle of material, with no excess fabric sticking out. Finally, fold the shorts in half so that the bottoms line up with the waistband and are compact. How To Fold A Shirt For Travel : Follow These Steps

How To Fold A Shirt For Travel

1. Make a plan

Make sure your shirt is completely flat. It’s not a good idea to do it on your bed, couch, or any other slanted surface. Smooth out any wrinkles in your dress shirt, and make sure it’s even on all sides, including the side.

2. Start by buttoning it.

Make sure your dress shirt won’t get creased on the trip before folding and packing it. Buttoning it up is the best method to do this. Don’t cut corners by only doing a few buttons. From top to bottom, button it up.

3. Begin folding

Now that you’ve prepared your dress shirt, it’s time to fold it. Begin with your shirt’s arms. Begin with one sleeve and make sure it’s nice and straight. You’ll want to fold it right along the shoulder crease.

4. Add a few more folds

Fold your dress shirt’s sleeve diagonally, then fold it in half again. The sleeve cuff should still be diagonal and lined up with the shirt’s collar at this point.

5. Do it all over again.

Then do the same thing with the other sleeve of the shirt. It may sound monotonous, but it will maintain your dress shirts in good condition while you’re on the road.

Starting with the buttons of your shirt pointing downward is another approach to fold the sleeves (toward your folding surface). The procedure is pretty identical to the first, except that each sleeve will be folded diagonally across the width of your dress shirt.

Place one sleeve diagonally across the other, making sure it’s straight and wrinkle-free. Then, starting near the collar, make certain the creases in the sleeves are ‘tight.’

The following stages are very much the same regardless of your strategy to deal with sleeves. Then, near the bottom of your shirt, begin your second fold.

If you use both hands, the folds will be even, and wrinkles will be avoided. Fold the bottom of the garment toward the collar and fold it upward. Fold the garment in half at this point.

Do You Have More Than One Dress Shirt In Your Bag?

Use this technique to keep multiple dress shirts in better shape if you’re traveling with more than one. It’s tempting to cut corners while folding a dress shirt properly because it takes time. Most of the time, this results in wrinkles that you have to iron out as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

However, you can feel good about saving some time with this technique. Even more, it works better at preventing wrinkles in your dress shirts.

Begin folding a single shirt as though it were a single garment. It was buttoned up, facing down, and resting on a firm, level surface.

However, instead of folding your sleeves diagonally, you’ll fold them almost straight down. The cuff of your dress shirt should point to the tail. The crease, or seam, that links the sleeve to the shirt’s body will still be folded.

Fold another dress shirt using one of the single-shirt folding methods we mentioned before to add to your trip bags. Then, arrange the second shirt neatly on top of the first shirt (while leaving the first shirt prepared as is). For the hack to work, you’ll need some leeway at the bottom, tail, or first shirt. An excellent length is usually 3 to 5 inches.

Fold the first shirt in half (with the second shirt laying on top of it). Make sure your shirts are neat once more by using both hands. The first shirt should now cover the second as if it were a book cover or a sandwich.

There’s one more step to carefully packing your dress shirts before putting them in your suitcase. Smooth them out and flip the button sides upward with both hands. Then go ahead and put them in while you continue to pack.

Advantages Of Rolling Your Clothes

It’s debatable whether you receive additional room. However, there are certain clear benefits to rolling your garments . You can easily see what you have and where it is, for starters. It’s also easy to pack as a result of this.

Not only that, but you can maximize the available area. Medium-weight textiles that roll smoothly and don’t wrinkle well are ideal for rolling. Moving a wool sweater is not something anyone likes to do.

If you fold your clothes to pack, you probably despise dealing with wrinkles. While you won’t be able to see everything in your luggage at a glance, you’ll arrive at your destination with fewer creases.

Of course, there are some materials where folding makes no sense. Folding very light, easily wrinkled materials is always the best option. A thick, wool sweater, on the other hand, will easily take up more space when rolled than when folded. In brief, particularly thin or thick materials should be folded, and anything else is fair game if you don’t mind creases.

FAQ’s

How do you fold a nice shirt for travel.

– Double-check that your shirt is buttoned.

– Lay it flat with the arms out, button side down.

– One sleeve should be folded over to the opposite side of the garment, keeping the armhole straight (slightly angled downward).

– Bring the sleeve to the point where the collar and cuff meet.

– Carry on with the rest of the sleeves.

Is it better to roll or fold clothes in a suitcase?

Clothing that wrinkles quickly, such as a cotton button-down shirt or linen, can be rolled instead of folded to save time. Fold things parallel to creases when they are visible. Folding the garment in half will result in unsightly creases on the sides, and the bottom will wrinkle more easily.

How to fold men’s shorts for travel?

One approach even demonstrates how to fold them in such a way that they may be tucked into themselves, ensuring that they maintain their shape no matter how jostled your luggage becomes. To ensure that the shorts lay flat, fold them on a level surface and loosen any tightened waists as much as possible. When in doubt, bring a steamer with you just in case any bothersome wrinkles persist.

Packing is a hated task, but it’s not quite as bad as hoping the hotel iron doesn’t scorch your best dress shirt. Naturally, if you want to be more organized and potentially save room, you can roll some things. Hope you will learn how to fold a shirt for travel in this article.

To properly fold a dress shirt, you may need to take more steps than you thought possible. Don’t worry; it’s pretty straightforward once you get the feel of it. If you’re concerned that you’re taking longer than a dress shirt deserves, keep in mind that ironing is optional.

5 Ways to Fold a T-Shirt—Including Martha's Favorite Method

  • When to Hang

A perfectly folded shirt doesn't just save space in your dresser drawers —it also keeps pesky wrinkles at bay. After all, no one wants a just-laundered garment to look like it's already been worn. While you can certainly hang your shirts in a closet, this takes up room for other garments like pants and jackets, which is why folding your go-to tees is an ideal alternative. Here, we're sharing a few easy folding techniques that will have your clothes looking fresh long after you place them in the drawer.

How to Fold a Shirt the Martha Way

Grace Canaan

For the neatest fold possible, turn to Martha's foolproof method (which you can also watch in the video above).

  • Lay the shirt horizontally and face up in front of you with the neck on the right-hand side.
  • Using both hands, pinch the shirt on the side opposite you at two points: With one hand at the shoulder, midway between the sleeve and the neck, and the other halfway down the shirt, parallel to your other hand.
  • While holding the two points, cross your right hand over your left, bringing the shoulder down to meet the shirt's bottom hem, and grab the hem.
  • Lift the shirt so it hangs in front of you.
  • Uncross your arms without letting go of the shirt and pull the fold taut as you do so.
  • Place the hanging sleeve on the work surface, and neatly drape the folded portion over to finish.

How to Fold a T-Shirt for Packing

If you're going on a trip and want to conserve space in your bag, try this method. "You’ll want to fold your clothes into thin compact folds so you save room and avoid wrinkles," says Anna Bauer, organizing expert and owner of  Sorted & Co.

  • Spread the shirt out on a flat surface with the front facing you.
  • Tuck the sleeves back behind the shirt.
  • Fold the shirt into thirds horizontally.
  • Bring the neckline down an inch from the bottom of the shirt
  • Fold the shirt into thirds vertically.

How to File Fold a T-Shirt

File folding your shirts allows you to stack them vertically in drawers rather than piling them on top of one another. For this method, start with the back of the shirt facing you, says Bauer.

  • Spread the shirt out on a flat surface with the back facing you.
  • Fold the right side of the shirt into the middle horizontally.
  • Fold the left side of the shirt into the middle horizontally so it meets the other side of the shirt.
  • Fold the shirt in half horizontally so the two ends are kissing.

How to Square Fold a T-Shirt

Different from folding your shirts for packing, this method from Bauer produces a larger square, allowing you to see any logos when you tuck your shirts into drawers.

  • Pinch the right and left sides of the shirt, each under the armpits, and fold it in half horizontally.
  • Fold the shirt in half again vertically.
  • Take the bottom of the shirt and fold it up towards the middle of the shirt.
  • Fold a third time up to the top to form a square.

How to Roll a T-Shirt

Rolling your shirts is one of the most effective ways to prevent your clothes from getting wrinkled.

  • Fold the right side of the shirt in towards the middle vertically.
  • Fold the left side of the shirt in towards the middle vertically.
  • Roll the shirt from top to bottom. Stop rolling about 10 inches from the bottom hem.
  • Fold the bottom hem section back and around the shirt so it tucks over the rolled section.

When to Hang Your Shirts

Whether or not you want to hang your shirts ultimately comes down to the material and personal preference. "If you are someone who is more inclined to hang things versus fold them, then lean into that preference," says Bauer. "If a shirt will wrinkle easily or has a stiff neckline, hanging will ensure it stays wrinkle-free and intact."

Dress shirts with collars look their best hung up, but when it comes time to travel, folding them is inevitable. Folding a collared shirt starts off with laying the buttons face down and folding in the long-sleeves one at a time. Then fold in both sides of the shirt towards the center , followed by the bottom in thirds .

Your collared shirt will be tightly folded and most importantly, the collar will stay in shape!

How to Store Shirts on Shelves

Now, that you’ve mastered one or more ways to fold a t-shirt, it’s time to store them on shelves. Thanks to shelf dividers , placing shirts on top of one another becomes incredibly easy without worrying about piles falling over.

Whether you decided to do a Chest Fold or the Marie-Kondo Style, fabric storage bins are a great alternative to keeping t-shirts together on a shelf. And if you love the folding-slash-rolling method, you can place your burrito-shaped shirts in a wire basket for the ultimate tidy look. Of course, shelves aren’t always within reach or can be totally absent in closets, but that’s why storage shelf cubes exist. Choose the style that works best for your lifestyle, so you can move onto bigger and better things: Like where you're headed in that fresh, wrinkle-free tee.

How to fold clothes before travel - packing techniques

11 August 2021

Main blog image

There are plenty of folding methods and packing techniques for your clothes. They differ depending on whether we choose a backpack, a suitcase or a bag. Rolling your clothes, laying them flat, laying them in layers or packing them vertically. It is worth testing which clothes easily crease and how they react when packed differently. The following methods have some advantages and disadvantages but this article will help you choose the best technique for you and it will show you, step by step, how to pack your luggage properly.

Packing techniques

Folded back-to-front, vacuum packing.

This is one of the best techniques when we need to save a lot of space. It means tightly rolling the clothes and putting them in a suitcase in the form of rolls.

✅ Type of baggage: Backpack | Suitcase

👍 Pros of rolling:

  • A great technique when you need to pack a lot of clothes - for example tshirts. You will save a lot of space.
  • Works perfectly with packing a backpack or when you use packing cubes.

👎 The downsides of rolling:

Creases can appear on more delicate clothes.

How to roll the clothes?

  • Fold the sleeves
  • Turn the bottom of the jacket inside out
  • Fold the jacket three times, equally
  • Flip it over and roll the jacket very tight
  • Attach folded part to a roll
  • Turn the top of the trousers inside out
  • Watch out: thougher materials are harder to roll
  • Put the trouser legs on each other
  • Flipt the trousers over and roll them tightly
  • Attach the folded part to a roll
  • Turn the bottom of the t-shirt inside out
  • Fold it three times, equally
  • Flip the t-shrit over and roll it tightly
  • Turn the bottom of a shirt inside out
  • Fold the shirt three times, equally
  • Flip it over and roll it tightly
  • Slightly roll the top of the towel
  • Fold the towel from both sides
  • Flip the towel over and roll it tightly

Bundling

If you plan to take a lot of clothes which may crease easily, then this method is for you. It is putting all the clothes on top of each other and then folding them, one after another.

✅ Type of baggage: Suitcase

👍 Pros of bundling

  • Allows you to save a lot of space in your suitcase.
  • It it a good choice when you pack a lot of clothes in different sizes - this way, the smaller ones can be wrapped with bigger parts of clothes, like jackets or hoodies.
  • Small number of creases on dresses and shirts.

👎 The downsides of bundling

  • It is time-consuming and not convenient whenever you try to reach for certain element in your suitcase.
  • This technique requires some skill and careful planning of the packing order.

How to pack clothes using "bundle" technique

General packing tips

  • Add another layers in front of each other
  • Slevees should cover each other
  • Fold them in half - they will fit perfectly
  • Pack them alternately
  • A bag with underwear or accessories will assure that there will not be any kinds of creases
  • Successively roll every layer until all the clothes are rolled

Packing order

  • Long slevees

t shirt folding for travel

By far the most popular packaging technique. It means folding clothes in the same way as we do when folding clothes in the wardrobe after laundry. It's common, but not necessarily the most cost-effective in terms of saving space. Our luggage then consists of many larger and smaller rectangles arranged on top of each other.

✅ Type of baggage:  Suitcase

👍 Pros of folding:

  • If you plan to take your clothes out of the suitcase and put them in a wardrobe immediately after arriving at your vacation destination - this is a good technique for you.
  • This way, you can conveniently plan and pack the outfits that you will wear every day. Just choose underwear, T-shirt and pants for the day and put them together in one set.
  • This is a good technique when we take clothes similar to each other, for example during a summer trip, because our rectangles will then be one sized and we will not waste much space.

👎 The downsides of folding:

  • Unfortunately, folding doesn't save too much space - especially when we have clothes of different sizes.
  • Creases appear on shirts, dresses or trousers folded with this method.

How to fold clothes?

  • Fasten all the buttons
  • Fold the slevees and then fold them again in the middle
  • Fold both sides of a shirt
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt this way so you can fold the whole shirt three times in total
  • Fold the shirt in half
  • Lay the trousers evenly
  • Put the trouser legs on each other
  • Fold the trousers in half
  • Fold them again - that's it

This is a type of folding, where the clothes are folded into rectangles andare arranged vertically, not horizontally.

👍 Pros of back-to-front method:

This way we can easily see the clothes we’ve packed without having to go  through the horizontally arranged layers.

This method saves a lot of space, especially when we pack a lot of clothes such as t-shirts.

👎 The downsides of back-to-front method:

Creases are an issue that also occurs with this packaging method.

If you need to pack a lot of irregular, space-consuming items, such as sweaters - vacuum packing with special bags is a great idea for you. It consists in "squeezing" air out of luggage, thanks to which you gain up to three times more space.

✅ Types of baggage: Suitcase

👍 Pros of vacuum packing:

The space savings are huge!

👎 The downsides of vacuum packing:

  • Requires investment in special accessories.
  • Packing is a bit more time consuming.

Folding your T-shirts can seem like a laborious and time-consuming task, but it doesn’t have to be! You have several options when it comes to folding T-shirts: you can use a basic fold to store your shirts in your dresser, use an Army roll for a compact fold that’s great for packing T-shirts for traveling, or you can pinch 2 points of the T-shirt to form a folded shirt in almost 2 seconds!

Folding Vertically for Storage

Step 1 Lay the T-shirt flat with the front side down.

  • Keep the shirt face down when you fold it so any logo or image on the front will be visible when it’s folded.
  • Use an iron for T-shirts with a lot of wrinkles.
  • Line up all of the edges of the shirt so they’re even.

Tip: Fold the shirt in half again to make it even smaller and take up less space when you store it.

Step 6 Stack your T-shirts vertically to save space.

Julie Naylon

Try sorting your shirts by style, then by color to keep them organized once they're folded. Group your long sleeve T-shirts together, then short sleeve, then tanks. Then, sort the groups by color from either light to dark or dark to light.

Making an Army Roll

Step 1 Use an Army roll to pack for traveling.

  • The Army roll is the most time-consuming way to fold a T-shirt.

Step 2 Lay the shirt face up on a flat surface.

  • Form a cuff with the bottom of the shirt.
  • Flatten the fold by running your hands along the length of it so it’s more compact.
  • The T-shirt should look like 1 long rectangle.

Tip: Grip the collar of the T-shirt and tuck it under your fingers to start the roll.

Using the Pinch Method

  • The T-shirt needs to be as flat as possible, so be sure to apply pressure when you smooth out the wrinkles with your hands.

Step 2 Imagine 2 lines that intersect across the middle and the top of the shirt.

  • Fold the shirt again in the middle to make the folded T-shirt even more compact.

Tip: With practice, this folding method is the fastest way to fold your T-shirts.

About This Article

Julie Naylon

To do a basic fold for a t-shirt, start by holding either a collared or uncollared t-shirt by the shoulders so it’s facing you, pinching it with your thumbs and forefingers. Then use your other three fingers to fold back the sleeves before putting the t-shirt face down on a flat surface. Make sure the sides have folded in about 1 inch. Finally, grab the collar and fold it back so it touches the hem. If you want to learn how to fold T-shirts from the side, keep reading the article! Did this summary help you? Yes No

13 Things To Do In Saint Petersburg | Russia’s Most Beautiful City

By Author Christian L.

Posted on Published: January 17, 2021  - Last updated: September 11, 2021

Categories Europe , Destinations , Russia

Once known as Leningrad and before that Petrograd, Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the country’s second-largest city. Set next to the Neva River, close to the Baltic Sea, this city is home to over 5 million people.

It’s the world’s northernmost city, founded by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter the apostle. Once home to the Tsars of Russia, it is today known as the country’s cultural capital.

With iconic sights such as Hermitage Museum, Nevsky Prospect, Peterhof Palace, and so much more, it has a fascinating heritage ripe for exploration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the 13 best things to do in St. Petersburg.

Visit Saint Petersburg, Europe´s most beautiful city

Top Things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg, Europe, has grown into one of the top tourist destinations on the continent. Although it might get very cold in winter, there are still plenty of things to do – and the summers are absolutely perfect! Saint Petersburg is one of the prettiest cities in all of Europe .

Keep reading for some of my favorite choices.

1. Visit The World Famous Hermitage Museum

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

One of the city’s most popular attractions (with over 3 million items in its esteemed collection), State Hermitage Museum showcases everything from fine art to ancient artifacts.

Even if you don’t plan on entering inside, the exterior is an architectural gem in itself. The columns are all in white with green/gold facades that can be viewed from the river or Palace Square.

If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, your trip would not be complete without stopping past this world-famous landmark. It’s also a great activity to do no matter what time of year you are visiting – and a perfect way to escape those cold Russian winter days.

There are six buildings in the museum complex in total. Five of which – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre – can be accessed by the public.

Within, you’ll be treated to Egyptian collections, artifacts dating from ancient Mesopotamia, and classical Greek jewelry, pottery, and sculptures. This is any historical culture lover’s dream.

Keep exploring, and you will find collections of prehistoric relics from the Palaeolithic era to the Iron Ages, European fine arts, Impressionist works, Catherine the Great’s personal collections, and so much more.

In fact, you’ll need an entire day or possibly longer to explore this incredible museum complex. If you only have limited time in St. Petersburg, be sure to add this museum to your itinerary! There are also guided tours available if you want a more educational experience.

Did you know? The Hermitage Museum is the world’s second-largest art museum.

2. Take in a Performance at Mariinsky Theatre

The Neoclassical Mariinsky Theatre is home to Russia’s revered opera and ballet companies.

The theatre – named after the wife of Tsar Alexandra II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna – has been here since 1860 when it was known as the Kirov Theatre.

This magnificent building, since it opened, has hosted stage performances and premieres from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and famous ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Today, in addition to hosting live performances, the theatre has its own record label, which focuses on releasing music by Russian composers Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov.

If you enjoy the arts and are going to be in St. Petersburg for several days, book tickets to see a world-class performance – you won’t be disappointed.

3. See Jewelled Eggs at the Faberge Museum

The House of Faberge was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by Gustav Faberge. Originally a jeweler, he became famous for designing jewel-encrusted eggs for the Tsars of Russia and is arguably the most famous goldsmith of the modern era.

Today, you can view these iconic collection pieces in the Faberge Museum. It showcases 4,000 items in total, including Faberge Easter eggs, jewelry, silverware, home decor, and fantasy-themed objects.

The incredible jeweled eggs are famous all over the world, and there are several museums dedicated to them. But if you want to learn about Gustav Faberge, his family, and how it all began, this is the museum to visit. You can purchase a ticket in person or online.

4. Spend an Hour Canal Cruising

St. Petersburg is built on 42 islands, and once upon a time (before bridges were constructed), cruising was the only way to navigate the city.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

On a Golden Ring boat tour, you’ll see some of St. Petersburg’s iconic sights along the Kryukov Canal, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Mariinsky theatre.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in central Saint Petersburg.

You’ll dip beneath the famous colored bridges on Neva River whilst enjoying views of Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasilyevsky Island, and the Summer Garden. This is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to take in all the beauty that St. Petersburg has to offer.

This tour also only takes around an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit your favorite spots throughout the day!

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

5. Discover Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Saint Petersburg,Russia,Europe,Church

One of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

This former Russian Orthodox Church was completed in 1907 and is built in Baroque, Neoclassical, and Russian Revival design. It is one of the city’s main attractions, with ornate domes, intricate frescoes, and 7,500 square meters of mosaics inside.

If you don’t wish to enter, you can gain incredible views from Griboedov Canal. But if you do venture inside, you’ll be rewarded with interior frescoes and mosaic works depicting biblical scenes and figures created by celebrated Russian artists of the time.

The Church of the Saviour of Blood is built on the spot where Emperor Alexander 2 was assassinated in 1881 – hence the name. So, not only will you be able to appreciate the fine architectural designs, but also explore an important part of Russian history.

6. Take a Rooftop Walk-in St. Petersburg

If you have viewed the city from canals and rivers, try it from the rooftops! You can take a guided rooftop walk in the city, seeing streets and skylines from an elevated perspective.

One particular tour to highlight is the Official Rooftops Excursion of St. Petersburg. Just a few minutes from Nevsky Prospect, these sites offer vistas of Fontanka River and Trinity Cathedral – and that’s just the first roof.

The second roof boasts views of St. Petersburg’s old center, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

This is a truly incredible way to see the city in all its glory, plus the tour provides you with binoculars so you can see everything in great detail.

7. Admire Nevsky Prospect’s Magnificent Architecture

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,

The main street of St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. Begin at the intersection at Stroganov Palace before venturing to Kazan Cathedral. While you walk, take in the monuments dedicated to Catherine the Great and browse goods at The Passage – Nevsky Avenue’s premier department store.

This store was quite the trailblazer. It opened its doors in the late 1840s and was one of the first buildings in Russia to use gas for lighting. Then, in 1900, an electric station was installed on an underground floor.

Once you’ve finished shopping and enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee, continue to the Russian National Library – the oldest public library in Russia – and Alexandrinsky Theatre (which was built for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg).

8. Visit the Island of Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress saint petersburg

Set on an island connected by bridges, Peter and Paul Fortress is instantly recognizable from its needle spire, which dominates the skyline. The fortress was originally built to defend the maritime city from Swedish invaders.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

However, Peter the Great defeated the opposition before it was even completed! It has since served as a military center and prison for political dissenters and, latterly, as a museum.

Inside the vast complex, you can see Peter and Paul Cathedral, visit the resting place of the Romanovs, and watch military processions or the firing of the noon-day gun.

It’s a great day trip for anyone interested in Russian, maritime or military history. There are also plenty of group walking tours available.

9. Sample Russian Vodka in a Ryumochnye

A visit to Russia wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local drink – vodka, and the best place to do this is in a Ryumochnye. This is a specific style of 19th-century Russian drinking house that not only offers some of Russia’s best vodka but also a short history lesson.

You could call it a bar, but it’s more than that – most mainstream Ryumochnye have a definite Soviet vibe and are places for working men to kick back and enjoy vodka with their buddies.

Beverages come in bottles or shot form, and some places offer self-service and snacks.

If that sounds too hardcore for your taste, there are updated versions of Ryumochnye in the city, like Mayak in St. Petersburg, where you can gain a similar experience.

10. Enjoy local Saint Petersburg Craft Beer

saint petersburg craft beer

Although most people think of vodka when visiting Russia, you can also enjoy some of the best craft beer in Saint Petersburg . Russia’s second-largest city has an exciting, rapidly growing craft beer scene, in part due to its history and geography.

Historically, the Russian empire was influenced by Northern Europe, and the Dutch & English beer-drinking culture eventually made its way here. Today, Saint Petersburg is home to a growing number of modern microbreweries, cool taprooms, and stylish bars.

craft beer saint petersburg

Saint Petersburg is also home to Stepan Razin Brewery, the oldest brewery in Russia (now, of course, owned by Heiniken). It opened in 1795, but today the building is known as the Saint Petersburg Beer Museum, showcasing the history of beer in Russia and the Soviet Union.

Russia’s largest and most popular brewery, Baltika, is also located in Saint Petersburg, and it’s possible to take a tour of their huge brewery.

11. See the Majestic Catherine Palace

A stately palace of blue and gold, Catherine’s Palace is located 26 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. Named after the wife of Peter the Great, this place was originally a two-story modest building commissioned in 1717.

The exterior, which stretches for one kilometer in circumference, is surrounded by woodlands, lawns, gilded balconies, and reliefs. However, the interiors are even more impressive.

With great halls, a white dining room, an amber room, and more. It’s the perfect place to step back into history and discover what life was like as a Russian aristocracy.

12. Explore Peterhof Palace

peterhof saint petersburg

If you’re going to visit Catherine Palace, you should tour Peterhof too. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you can even take a hydrofoil speed boat from right behind the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg center.

Sitting close to the Baltic Sea, Peterhof Palace was constructed by Peter the Great to be Russia’s version of Versailles. The opulent residence surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and tiered staircases leading to the grand entrance evokes mystery and the history of a bygone era.

Inside it is lavishly decorated with dazzling chandeliers, one-of-a-kind artworks and beautiful ceiling frescoes.

Peterhof garden.

On a guided tour, you can learn more about the palace’s history. Discover the Throne Room, Portrait Hall and Peter the Great’s Oak Study. You’ll see dining rooms set for dinner, grand ballrooms where dancing and gatherings would take place, and décor which defies time.

Peterhof saint petersburg russia

The palace offers great insight into his life and legacy, and if you are interested in history, art and interior design, you’ll love it.

13. Spend a Day by the Finnish Border at Vyborg

Just over an hour from central Saint Petersburg by train is the city of Vyborg. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and was first settled back in the 12th century. The city has been occupied by Finnish and German forces and suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. However, it has since been rebuilt.

It’s a charming center to wander around, with narrow cobbled streets, a medieval castle, and Finnish art nouveau structures sprinkled throughout. An easy day trip from St. Petersburg, it can also serve as a stop-off point if you’re crossing into Finland to continue your adventure.

Want to know more about Saint Petersburg?

Where is St. Petersburg | Is St. Petersburg in Europe?

If you want to know “Where is Saint Petersburg?”, you’ve come to the right place. Beautiful St. Petersburg is located in northern Russia. Russia is a massive country, so it is no surprise that many people want to know “Is Saint Petersburg in Europe?”. The answer is yes.

How to Get to Saint Petersburg

The maritime city is well linked to Europe by air, sea, rail and road. Depending on where you’re traveling from and the rest of your itinerary, you can use one of the following ways to arrive at St. Petersburg.

You can fly into Saint Petersburg through Pulkovo International Airport. There are around 1,100 international flights a week and 1,200 domestic flights operating in and out of the local airport.

Although many flights from European cities to Saint Petersburg are direct, you may have to change flights if flying from further afield.

It’s also possible to travel to St. Petersburg by train. The most popular (and most frequent) routes operate from Moscow, Helsinki, and Tallinn. However, there are options to travel from other areas in central Europe, central Asia, and eastern Europe by rail.

There is a central bus station in Saint Petersburg, with services to and from Moscow, Pskov, Novgorod, Vilnius, Riga , Tallinn and Helsinki. Some of these journeys can be long and arduous.

Therefore, thorough research and choosing the right bus company is important.

Baltic Sea Cruises also operate to St. Petersburg as part of a larger itinerary, and St. Peter Line Ferry sails from Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia.

Exploring Saint Petersburg, Russia

Saint Petersburg is the 5th most populous city in Europe and also a leading tourist destination. Although people sometimes forget about Russia, this city is breathtakingly beautiful and provides plenty of cultural and historical attractions.

Now that you know where to go, I hope you have an amazing time in Russia’s most beautiful city.

They will waste your time and money! I paid my invoice on April 29,2024 and was told it will be done in 5 business days. Fast forward to May 3rd ,2024 I get my mock up. It is COMPLETELY opposite of what we spoke about in store. Now they have to redo the mock up to what we talked about originally. I then ask when the expected date of pick up would be, I was told should be ready middle of next week more towards May 8th, which is 8 business at this point. On May10th. 2024 I reach out once again wondering where my merchandise is. I send an email wanting to speak with management about lack of communication via phone call. I get a call from someone named "Bobby" rudely telling me every excuse in the book (internal miscommunication issues). Finally, May 16th, 2024 , 15 BUSINESS DAYS LATER and 3 MISSED OPPORTUNITIES TO PROMOTE MY SHIRTS I WANTED , I finally got to pick up my shirts. Needless to say the experience got worse once I get there I'm missing a shirt, I was over it, I asked to speak with a manager I was told they left for the day but quickly changed once asking for their contact info. A guy with long hair all of sudden says he is "acting" as one for the day. When Big Frog of St. Petersburg management of this store sees this review, please email me for my number so I am able to speak to an actual manger before I have to go higher up. I would NEVER recommend this location !!!!! Email is : [email protected]

An honest one. I've owned a couple businesses and helped businesses with merchandise and I had a terrible experience here. The first time I went , I received my shirt and it looked amazing. Beautiful and nice and looking ironed. It was in a plastic wrapping so I felt really happy but comes out Perspective was spelt wrong - ( Prospective ) which I totally get maybe there was an mis communication. And in business that happens. I was thankful you guys were able to fix that. The second time I went , I received the shirt without the plastic wrapping and it was just thrown into the bag not even folded and super wrinkled. The strings from the shirt were also hanging out about a foot so it was just a dud shirt. I came back and the employee was giving me such a hard time. He then proceeded to grab scissors in front of me and start chopping away all the strings and now the shirt was all messed up. He tried telling me it's fine..... I'm not sure if it was the owner at that moment, he had came out grabbed the shirt and said "well make you a new one" very rudely. I was very confused and at that point just done. I take pride in the merchandise I wear and I couldn't even wear this because it looked so bad and don't want it to reflect upon my company nor Big Frog. The third time I came to pick up the shirt again it was super wrinkled , thrown in the bag and I just felt disrespected overall. The time and stress this whole process gave me is insane. I work with many companies locally and would have loved it to go smoothly. I love supporting local businesses but I highly do not recommend big frog. More like little frog it was so unprofessional.

Call me crazy but if I had a business right on Central Av. in the Edge I would, even though I'm a custom shirt store, print up a ton of Pride shirts the weekend of St. Pete Pride. I called the store today and spoke to a very 'annoyed sounding' Nick, who told me in no uncertain terms that they were a 'custom' shop. I was trying to say that I was aware they are a 'custom' shop but that I had purchased 'off the rack' in that store before (Florida Sucks) but 'Nick' hung up on me. Bye Nick, lost a customer who has referred there before for 'custom' work. Thought you were in business to make money, not be snobby buttheads.

I called this place up out of desperation for a last minute birthday gift idea. The guy helped me out, and ended up getting the job done same day within minutes of being there. HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you're looking for custom tshirts. Quality of shirts are good and employees are happy to help.

Incredibly easy to work with even if you aren't able to stop by the shop, and the ability to do one-off full color t-shirt prints kills the online options. I'm going through a personal experience right now with cancer and have been making t-shirts to wear to treatment; I email them the graphics, call and pay, they ship me the shirts. I don't have to buy six or ten shirts to meet a minimum, the pricing is very competitive, they have been coming out great, and they ship them to me so I don't have to drive over to pick them up. What more can you ask for?!

Tshirt much smaller than expected. Salesperson made no offer to adjust for proper sizing. This is a shirt purchased for Farmhouse Sanctuary. I'm a medium and shirt don't fit. For now on my money goes straight to the sanctuary. Yes you lost a customer

I have spent 100's of dollars there but new to them. The gentleman with the tattooed head was so dismissive. Dropped shirts of a week in advance, told they'd send a payment link. Never got it, never was called, got there and he was basically like "whatever". Left and will never go back...if your not a company, you are nothing to this business.

I loved working with Jocelyn at Big Frog! She was super friendly, patient, and detail-oriented. Together, we designed awesome t-shirts and Big Frog completed production of my custom order in under a week. Great price, and i came in under my expected budget. So happy I choose them!
