Top Panama Canal FAQs

When is the best time to cruise the Panama Canal?

The Panama Canal is open to ships year-round, but the most pleasant time to cruise is in the winter season, from November to May. During these months, the climate is less humid and there is less rainfall.

How long does it take for a cruise ship to pass through the canal?

Typically, the transit of the Panama Canal takes eight to ten hours, but this depends on how much traffic there is and whether there is any congestion at the massive locks. You’ll find the transit is packed with excitement, whether your ship is squeezing into the locks, making its way along the narrow channel, or crossing the serene expanse of Gatun Lake, where there’s a great chance of spotting wildlife including monkeys, iguanas, and toucans.

What are the departure ports?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises depart from Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami.

Which side of the ship is best for cruising through the Panama Canal?

There is no “best” side for cruising the Panama Canal. You will most likely find you want to enjoy the experience from different areas on the ship. When you’re in a lock, it’s fascinating to watch the mechanisms of these engineering masterpieces, so find the best position on deck to observe this.

On Celebrity Beyond, guests of The Retreat can take in the view from The Retreat Sundeck. Other vantage points include the Magic Carpet, cantilevered over the side of the ship, as well as the Rooftop Terrace and the Sunset Bar.

On Celebrity Summit, guests of The Retreat can view the locks from the Retreat Sundeck on deck 12 forward. Other options include the Sky Lounge, which has panoramic forward views and is climate-controlled, or the Rooftop Terrace, aft.

On a transit from Panama City to Colon, the futuristic skyline of Panama City will be on your starboard (right) side. When you pass through the skinny Culebra Cut between Panama City and Gamboa, you’ll have the greenery of a national park on both sides, so this is a good time to look for monkeys and toucans in the trees.

Entering Gatun Lake, it’s fun to be forward on deck as you can see the procession of ships coming towards you. You could also be aft, at the back of the ship, with a pair of binoculars to spot other ships.

The most important thing to do is to head up on deck and absorb this spectacular experience. Every transit will have expert commentary that’s broadcast on the decks and in the lounges, so you’ll be able to gain a deeper insight into the workings of the canal and its history.

How long do cruises last?

Celebrity’s Panama Canal cruises last either 11, 14, or 15 nights.

What's the difference between a full transit and a partial transit cruise of the Panama Canal?

A full transit of the Panama Canal takes you from the Pacific to the Caribbean, or vice versa. A partial transit, on the other hand, gives you a taste of the Panama Canal on a shorter cruise from Colon, on the Caribbean side, to the Gatun Locks and back again. You’ll still enjoy the experience of going through the massive locks.

When your ship spends the day in Colon, you can see more of Panama on a range of shore excursions. Despite the monumental achievement of engineering that the Panama Canal represents, the drive from Colon to Panama City is just under an hour, so there are plenty of options.

What are the main ports of call on a Panama Canal cruise?

Celebrity offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises, with several different ports of call. You could sail from Fort Lauderdale to the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) and Cartagena in Colombia. A sailing from Miami to Los Angeles visits Cartagena, Puntarenas in Costa Rica, and Puerto Vallarta. Other cruises include stops in Huatulco, Mexico, and Grand Cayman.

What can I expect to see and experience during the canal transit?

During the 48-mile transit, you’ll see everything from intricate lock systems to the serene landscapes of the rainforest and Gatun Lake. Your ship will be raised up 85 feet through a system of three locks to the level of the freshwater Gatun Lake. Once you’ve crossed the lake, you will descend 85 feet back to sea level through another set of locks.

Being in the locks is a thrilling experience and gives you an insight into how extraordinary the canal is, all the more so given that it’s more than 100 years old. You’ll see everything from giant cargo ships to small yachts making the transit. Visitors in the viewing galleries at the locks will wave as you pass through.

On the stretches between the locks, you’ll be immersed in nature. The narrow Culebra Cut, an artificial channel near Panama City, is lined with greenery, while the expanse of the Gatun Lake is dotted with rainforested islands and is a great place to look for wildlife.

There are other manmade wonders to look out for, too. On the Panama City side of the canal, you’ll sail under the graceful arch of the Bridge of the Americas, which forms part of the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Patagonia. Just beyond the bridge, as you head toward the Pacific, look out for the Biomuseu, a striking jumble of brightly colored shapes designed by famous architect Frank Gehry, housing eight galleries showcasing Panama’s biodiversity.

What excursions are available?

If you choose a cruise that includes a partial transit of the canal, you can experience Panama’s beauty during a day in Colon. Excursions from here include eco-adventures on Gatun Lake, where you can see capuchin and howler monkeys, caimans, and three-toed sloths. You could visit the locks along the canal and tour the visitor centers, stopping to watch ships pass through the narrow channels.

Or take a trip to Panama City itself, a dramatic contrast between glassy skyscrapers and the narrow alleys and colorful facades of the atmospheric Casco Viejo, or old town, dating back to the 17th century. There are excursions to an Embera village, too, where you can learn about the traditional lifestyle of this rainforest tribe.

What is there to do on the ship?

You’ll find no shortage of things to do on board your luxurious Celebrity ship. Sunbathe by the pool, relax in a bubbling hot tub, join a class in the Fitness Center, or indulge in a treatment in the spa.

Enjoy exploring all the different dining options, from made-to-order burgers and salads by the pool to French classics and a delightful 3D cartoon animation in Le Petit Chef, and steaks and seafood in the elegant Tuscan Grille. Elevate your experience to The Retreat and you can enjoy fine dining in Luminae, as well as suite accommodation and access to an exclusive lounge.

On Edge-Series ships, the Magic Carpet, suspended over the side of the ship, gives you uninterrupted sea views and is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or cocktail, enjoying the sea air. Or spend part of your Panama Canal transit in the Sunset Bar, at the aft of the ship, for wonderful views of the ships following you.

Oceania Cruises will sail from Port Tampa Bay beginning in 2026

A new luxury cruise line is coming to Tampa Bay. Oceania Cruises will set sail for the Caribbean and Panama Canal starting in February 2026.

The 670-guest Insignia ship will offer guests five options of seven- to 20-night cruises from February to April, according to a media release from Port Tampa Bay. Passengers will dock in Costa Maya, Mexico; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Cartagena, Colombia; and other similar destinations.

Oceania, a Miami-based subsidiary of Norwegian Cruise Lines, operates eight luxury vessels that traverse all seven continents. The line’s “Around the World” cruise takes guests to over 100 destinations in 180 days — prices for 2026 start at $42,000. On board, guests can access fine-dining options like Polo Grill, an American steakhouse, and Toscana, an Italian venue.

Starting prices for sailings from Tampa currently range from $2,200 for a seven-night Caribbean cruise to $5,800 for a 20-night Panama Canal cruise.

Here’s a look at the five itineraries that will sail from Tampa in 2026:

Tropical Harmony : February 22-March 3, nine days. Starting in Bridgetown, Barbados; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; ending in Tampa.

Leeward Isles Serenade : March 3-18, 15 days. Starting in Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. John’s, Antigua; Roseau, Dominica; Basseterre, St. Kitts; Frederiksted, St. Croix; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; ending in Tampa.

Western Caribbean Escape : March 18-25, seven days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Belize City, Belize; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya; ending in Tampa.

Palms and Panama Canal : March 25-April 4, ten days. Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon, Panama; ending with one overnight stay in Panama City, Panama. The ship crosses the Panama Canal during daylight hours.

Panama Canal Connoisseur : March 25-April 14, 20 days. Starting in Tampa; Cozumel; Costa Maya; Belize City; Roatan; Puerto Limon; Colon; one overnight stay in Panama City; Cartagena; Willemstad, Curacao; Oranjestad, Aruba; Montego Bay; George Town, Cayman Islands; ending in Miami.

Port Tampa Bay now has six cruise lines that dock at the port. Oceania will join Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line and Margaritaville at Sea.

Cruises represent a quarter of the port’s revenue, and that share is rising. In fiscal year 2025, the port expects 373 sailings with around 1.6 million passengers. This year, around 1.2 million people are projected to sail from Tampa’s port as the industry makes a rapid comeback post-pandemic.

Home to more than 2,000 hot springs, this picturesque city gives you a chance to experience its hot springs, mud baths, steam baths and even traditional Japanese black sand baths. To top it off, eight unique hot springs, collectively named Onsen Hells, offer entertainingly distinctive attractions. On chilly days, visitors are treated to the otherworldly view of steam rising throughout the city. Since Beppu is famously popular within Japan as a resort getaway, it’s an ideal place to rub elbows with Japanese travelers.

Bluff New Zealand Water Lighthouse Cliff

Bluff, New Zealand

Located on the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, Bluff is one of the oldest European settlements in New Zealand and is a gateway to Stewart Island and Invercargill, the capital of the Southland region. Bon vivants won’t want to miss the chance to sample deep-water Bluff oysters, grown in the cold waters of Foveaux Strait and recognized as some of the best in the world. Stewart Island is a natural paradise with 85% of the island designated a national park, while Invercargill charms visitors with Victorian, Edwardian and art deco architecture and several museums. Farther north, the Fiordland National Park is awe-inspiring with glass-like alpine lakes and spectacular fjords. Closer to port, Bluff Maritime Museum features exhibits on oystering, Bluff Harbour and local history.

Castro Chile South America Church

Castro (Chiloé Island), Chile

Discover the pastoral beauty of Chile’s Chiloé Archipelago and lose yourself in the charming villages on Chiloé Island, where the port of Castro is the largest town and island capital. Here you’ll find one of the 16 wooden churches built by Jesuit and Franciscan Catholics from the 17th to 19th centuries that together compose a UNESCO World Heritage site. Castro is also fairly close to Chiloé National Park, where you can find hiking trails to suit all levels of fitness. If you want to load up on carbs before you go, be sure to have some potatoes – varieties grown on Chiloé Island are among the oldest cultivated tubers in the world.

Coron Philippines Islands Water Asia

Coron, Philippines

Situated in the northern region of the island province of Palawan – often billed as one of the best island destinations in the world – Coron is blessed with towering limestone karsts, gorgeous beaches and incredible coral reefs. You can explore old-growth rainforests, snorkel in picturesque lagoons and even dive World War II wrecks. Kayangan Lake offers sweeping views of limestone towers draped in lush vegetation, and visitors are welcome to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. You’ll quickly understand why this mountain lake is among the most photographed places in the Philippines. Just a short drive from the port, the mangrove-shrouded Maquinit Hot Springs is one of the few saltwater hot springs in the world and is the perfect location to take a restorative dip.

Djupivogur Iceland Mountains River

Djupivogur, Iceland

A model town for slow living, Djupivogur is big on serenity and scenery. It sits on a long fjord at the southern edge of East Iceland and a pyramid-shaped basalt mountain rises up behind the town. Some of Iceland’s must-visit glacial wonders are within reach – Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon, and the breathtaking Hoffellsjokull Glacier. Closer to port, excellent hiking trails are in abundance and the Bulandsnes Bird Reserve is a popular choice due to the peninsula’s rich birdlife. A nearby open-air artwork is also a claim to fame: named the Eggs of Merry Bay, the installation of 34 large-scale granite eggs represents bird species that nest in the area. Just a short boat ride away, the uninhabited, nature-rich island of Papey is a popular destination known for puffins, guillemots and other seabirds.

Gatun Lake Panama Exotic Bird Jungle

Gatun Lake, Panama

Roughly the size of the island of Barbados, the expansive Gatun Lake was created during the construction of the Panama Canal. Considered part of the Panama Canal system, Gatun Lake’s primary function is to hold sufficient water for canal passage and for use in the canal’s locks during dry spells, but it pulsates with biodiversity. Wildlife such as sloths, capuchin and howler monkeys, iguanas, and toucans now thrive in lush pockets around the lake and manatee sightings are common. Set off on a safari boating adventure, a canopy tour or even a kayaking adventure to take in the area’s lush flora and unique fauna. Chagres National Park is also within reach, home to an indigenous Emberá tribe and their village.

Heimaey Iceland Island Water

Heimaey, Iceland

The largest of the Westman Islands and the only one that is inhabited, Heimaey sits just four miles off the southern coast of Iceland but seems worlds away with its steep moss-covered cliffs, multihued volcanic rocks and abundant summer population of puffins. Still considered one of Iceland’s undiscovered gems, Heimaey beguiles visitors with its dramatic scenery and otherworldly atmosphere. Volcano and lava hikes abound, and cruising around the island reveals sea caves, lava formations, the famed Elephant Rock formation and prime whale watching. In the summer, you’re likely to spot puffins – the island is an important Atlantic puffin nesting habitat, with the Westman Islands serving as home to the world’s largest Atlantic puffin colony. Stop by the Eldheimar Museum, built around one of the houses buried in the 1973 eruption, for a look at the island’s volcanic past.

Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston (Port Royal), Jamaica

Kumamoto Yatsushiro Japan Cherry Blossom Temple

Kumamoto (Yatsushiro), Japan

Located on the island of Kyushu, Kumamoto has long been one of the most influential cities in the region. The city is renowned for its castle, a beautiful samurai fortress that takes you on an intriguing 400-year historical journey. Those in need of a refreshing escape should head to Ueki Hot Springs, which has been inviting visitors to soak up the therapeutic benefits of its silky alkaline water since 1895. For a relaxing stroll, visit Suizenji Jojuen Park, which dates to the 1600s and features traditional Japanese gardens, shrines and a teahouse. Kumamoto happens to be a bit of a foodie city too. Try Kumamoto ramen, a local spin on the dish that features a creamier pork broth and is topped with fried garlic chips.

Limerick Ireland Castle

Limerick (Shannon), Ireland

On the banks of the Shannon River, Shannon is an ideal gateway to the medieval castles, verdant landscapes and cities of western Ireland. Nearby, the cultural heritage and history of Limerick beckon. The 13th-century King John’s Castle; the iconic Milk Market, one of the oldest markets in Ireland; the 12th-century St. Mary’s Cathedral; and the picture-perfect village of Adare with its thatched cottages are all top choices. Walk the coastal pathways of the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, a UNESCO Global Geopark that also includes the fossil-rich limestone landscape of the Burren. The 15th-century Bunratty Castle, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, provides a fascinating look at how the lords and ladies of the era lived.

Sao Francisco do Sul Brazil Beach Coast Water

São Francisco do Sul, Brazil

One of Brazil’s oldest towns, São Francisco do Sul was founded in the early 16th century and shows off its history in its cobblestone streets and colonial buildings, many of which are listed on the national historic registry. As you sail toward the island, enjoy some of the best views of the town, which showcase pastel homes with arched windows and elegant balconies, while the twin towers of the old church hover above the historic city center. Home to the only museum of boats in Brazil, the Old Town reveals the country’s seafaring history. Nearby are miles of beaches and coves where you can spend the day swimming and soaking in the sun.

Seydisfjordur Iceland Small Town Mountain

Seydisfjordur, Iceland

Squarely in the middle of the Eastfjords and literally located at the base of a long and narrow fjord, picturesque Seydisfjordur quickly makes an impression on visitors upon arrival. It’s at the heart of some of Iceland’s most unsung treasures. Waterfalls, mountains, fjords and peaceful hiking trails stretch out all around. Discover the local flora and fauna at Skalanes Nature Reserve, which is home to diverse wildlife such as reindeer, arctic foxes and more than 40 different species of birds, or soak in soothing geothermal waters at Vok Nature Baths. Seydisfjordur features ornate wooden architecture with a Scandinavian influence and boasts a flourishing arts scene too. You won’t want to miss two iconic photo opportunities – the quaint Blue Church and the Rainbow Road that leads there.

Szczecin Poland European Small Town

Szczecin, Poland

Lively Szczecin, one of Poland’s largest cities and the capital of the West Pomerania region, has endured a colorful and multifaceted history that’s revealed in its architecture. Art nouveau mansions, ornate gothic-style buildings and baroque-style gates and fountains coexist with new glass and steel structures being erected such as the award-winning Szczecin Philharmonic Hall, which appears to glow with its innovatively lit glass façade. Szczecin’s Old Town is an excellent starting point – it’s full of cafés, bustling restaurants, and top attractions such as the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, the Waly Chrobrego elevated riverfront promenade and several museums. With parks aplenty, Szczecin is also known for being green and lush. The Jasne Blonia Square and neighboring Kasprowicz Park are the most popular, and the nearby Szmaragdowe Lake features an observation deck that offers lovely views of the Lower Oder River and Szczecin.

Taranto Italy Mediterranean Small Town

Taranto, Italy

A bit off the tourist circuit – delightfully so – the hidden treasure of Taranto in the Puglia region possesses renowned Greek and Roman history dating back to the Spartans when they founded it in the 8th century BCE. Known as the City of Two Seas, it straddles the Ionian Sea and Mare Piccolo, the large lagoon behind its Old Town. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto is a major draw, one of Italy’s most important archaeological museums that houses one of the largest collections of artifacts from the Magna Graecia era. Taranto’s 11th-century cathedral is the gem of the Old Town and among Puglia’s oldest Romanesque buildings. The city is more recently famous as the site of one of the most pivotal World War II naval battles. Don’t miss the chance to sample orecchiette, Puglia’s signature pasta; freshly caught seafood; and the deliciously creamy mozzarella at one of the many fabulous restaurants.

Holland America Line Offers Cruisers the Chance to Sample a Grand Voyage, Exploring a Global Region in Grand Style Starting at Just $169/day

Guests can enjoy destinations like Easter Island, Antarctica and cities of the Med while enjoying signature experiences aboard a Grand Voyages

Seattle, Wash., Aug. 26, 2024 — Holland America Line , a leader in destination-rich longer voyages, is inviting cruisers to sample one of its most prolific cruise categories by booking a segment of either the 2025 Grand World Voyage or 2025 Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole, for as little as $169 per day, including all taxes and fees.

Seven segments are available on the Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole aboard Volendam, ranging from 33 to 100 days. On Zuiderdam’s Grand World Voyage, guests can choose from among six segments, ranging from 20 to 55 days. The segments allow guests to choose from a diverse selection of shorter itineraries, tailoring the Grand Voyage experience to their own taste and timeline.

“Our Grand Voyages are something our dedicated guests come back for every year while also attracting new guests who are eager to explore the world, but at over four months we recognize that not everyone has that time,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president of deployment and itinerary planning for Holland America Line. “By booking one of our 2025 Grand Voyage segments, cruisers can get a taste of the special atmosphere and community aboard these sailings at an incredible value.”

Grand Voyage segments sail between two key ports along each voyage, making it a seamless experience joining the ship in various locales around the world. On the Grand World Voyage, guests can sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Singapore or Sydney, Australia; Singapore to Athens, Greece; Cape Town, South Africa, to Fort Lauderdale; Sydney to Cape Town; and Athens to Fort Lauderdale.

The Grand Voyage: Pole to Pole segments cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Aires, Argentina; Buenos Aires to Barcelona, Spain, or Ijmuiden (Amsterdam), the Netherlands or Fort Lauderdale; Fort Lauderdale to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam); and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) or Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale.

This epic new cruise will take you from the US to Antarctica without ever getting on an airplane

Always wanted to see Antarctica? Holland America Line this week unveiled an unusual new option for getting there.

The Seattle-based line announced an epic sailing to the White Continent that begins in Fort Lauderdale, Florida — a port thousands of miles away from the typical jumping-off points for Antarctica cruises in Argentina and Chile.

Kicking off Jan. 25, 2025, the 47-night voyage will take place on the line's 1,432-passenger Volendam and is a segment of a longer pole-to-pole world cruise that Holland America has been selling since April 2023.

Like that longer voyage, the shortened segment is unusual in that it will allow Americans to get from the United States to Antarctica without taking a long international flight.

For people in and near Florida who can drive to Fort Lauderdale, it'll be accessible without stepping on a plane of any sort.

That said, there is one big caveat for flight-avoiders: You'll still need an international flight to return to the U.S. at the voyage's conclusion. The cruise ends March 13, 2025, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

From Florida to Antarctica

The newly announced cruise — one of several shorter segments of the previously announced pole-to-pole cruise that Holland America has opened for bookings — will begin with stops at Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic; Santa Marta, Colombia; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, as Volendam heads southward toward the Panama Canal .

After passing westward through the canal, the ship will head southward along the coasts of Central and South America for more than three weeks, with multiple stops in Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Chile.

This portion of the trip will include an extensive exploration of the Patagonia region and Chilean Fjords on the west coast of Chile.

From there, Voledam will sail across the Strait of Magellan at the southern tip of South America to reach Punta Arenas, Chile, and then Ushuaia, Argentina — the two main jumping-off points for voyages to Antarctica.

Related: Is this the ultimate Antarctica cruise ship?

Two more days crossing the famously rough Drake Passage will finally bring Volendam to Antarctica, where it will spend four days sailing along the ice- and mountain-lined coast.

Unlike on an expedition cruise to Antarctica on a small expedition vessel, passengers will not land on the continent. But passengers will be able to view the scenic coastline from the outer decks of the ship.

From Antarctica, Volendam will head up the east coast of Argentina to Buenos Aires. The final stops before reaching Buenos Aires will include the Falkland Islands off the coast of Argentina and Puerto Madryn, Argentina.

Montevideo, Uruguay, is also on the schedule as the ship heads northward.

Fares for the segment start at $9,684 per person, including all taxes and fees — or about $206 per person, per day.
