Serengeti National Park

Serengeti hot air balloon safari

Hot air balloon flights

A Serengeti balloon safari is the ultimate way to experience the vastness of the national park.

Just imagine floating above the Serengeti plains skimming treetops in complete silence whilst seeing wildlife on the ground below. This is an essential safari experience for travellers to Serengeti National Park.

Serengeti balloon safaris locations

Balloon flights are run daily at 06h00 from four launch sites within Serengeti National Park: one throughout the year close to Seronera, and others in the Ndutu area (from 25 December to 15 March), in the Western Corridor (from June to October), and in northern Serengeti (from July to October).

The experience

Although not cheap, a balloon safaris is worth the expense. Floating serenely over the treetops as the sun peaks over the horizon permits you to experience the endless Serengeti plains from an unforgettable perspective. As we set departure very early morning, you may even spot some nocturnal predators getting ready for the day.

During most flights the pilot will include sections flown at a higher altitude allowing you to soak up uninterrupted views of the Serengeti; other sections may involve low-level flying, during which there may be the opportunity to see wildlife. Highly experienced pilots can follow rivers and streams, and will glide just meters above grunting hippos or wandering giraffes. Flying low allows you to take some great aerial wildlife photos. You move over the plains wherever the wind takes you, whilst being tracked from the ground by balloon crew in their vehicles.

Hot air ballooning & the Great Migration

The best odds for seeing the Great Migration with its innumerable wildebeest and zebra would be to book a flight in the Ndutu area as large herds congregate here between December and March. The other locations may also allow you to see the Great Migration from above, but please remember the herd is mobile and may only be in a particular area for a brief period, if not just a couple of days. This means that some luck needs to be on your side.

Serengeti hot air balloon flight price

A Serengeti balloon flight costs US$ 599 per person (this includes the Tanapa ballooning fee of US$ 40). This rate includes a transfer from your lodge or camp to the departure balloon site, the balloon flight itself, and a champagne breakfast (after landing). The flight will last anything in between 50 and 70 minutes. Depending on the landing site, also the breakfast site is set up at a different location daily. You will share the balloon with up to 16 passengers in total.

Planning a balloon safari

Be prepared for a very early start the transfer from the Seronera area leaves at 05h30 and from the other lodges in the area at around 04h00. Please remember to bring some warm clothing, and a bag in which you can secure camera, binoculars, and other personal items. We can arrange departures for a Serengeti balloon safari from most lodges and camps in the Serengeti. We strongly recommend booking a balloon safari in advance, as it concerns a very popular activity and gets booked out early (especially during peak season).

What happens if the weather is poor?

Ballooning is subject to suitable weather. If your flight is cancelled because of poor weather, you will be re-booked on a later flight If possible, otherwise your money will be refunded.

Why is a balloon safari so expensive?

Balloon flights are expensive to operate, especially in remote areas such as Serengeti National Park. Balloons -naturally- need to be in top condition, so they need to be replaced after about 850 flight hours. One balloon costs more than US$ 100,000. One also needs to consider the cost of fuel and crew to operate the balloon flight. Each crew comprises six people plus a licensed pilot. A further ten people (per balloon) operate behind the scenes to get the balloon airborne. So this adds up to a considerable amount of people. Additionally, there are the recovery vehicles, transfer vehicles, and backup operations. Last, a substantial part of the total price is allocated to conservation fees.

Hot-air balloon trips are fairly expensive, with conservation fees accounting for a significant portion of the price. The cost of a hot air balloon ride begins at $550 per person.

One reason for this is that balloons have a limited lifespan and must be changed after a specific number of hours. Balloons are retired after around 850 flight hours, and a new balloon must be purchased to assure the safety of those on board.

The cost of fuel and personnel to operate the hot air balloon also contributes to the price of hot air balloon trips. Six crew members and a qualified balloon pilot are on board, as are ten others who operate behind the scenes with rescue trucks, transfers, and backup operations.

Its weather patterns, fauna, and flora are said to have changed little in a million years, giving the area a prehistoric atmosphere.

The Serengeti Plains topography is also incredibly diverse, ranging from savannah to steep woods to open meadows.Aside from rhinos and hunting dogs, visitors to the Serengeti can easily view every type of African savanna mammal. Due to the broad grass plains where grazing animals congregate, predators are plentiful and easy to see, especially from above.

The Serengeti also contains a high concentration of lions with over 3,000 of them found in the park and about 1.5 million wildebeests. A view of these huge beasts crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

hot air balloon safari in Serengeti

A truly 'once in a lifetime' experience, flying in a Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti plains is an evocative experience that you have the chance to enjoy during any safari you take to Serengeti National Park. The balloon take offs at the break of dawn, around 6am, gliding silently during the ride over the savannah grasslands below where you may spot a variety of wildlife. The flight lasts an hour and concludes with a ''Champagne Bush Breakfast'' at the balloon landing site in the wilderness. The balloon is flown by a fully qualified and experienced Pilot and the balloons themselves are most often made by Cameron, a specialist hot air balloon manufacturer in Great Britain. The basket sizes vary and it is best to book the ride in advance as space is typically limited to a maximum of 16 passengers per balloon, often less if flying with a smaller basket. Prices for the 2022 ~ 2023 season range from US$ 559 to US$ 599 per person depending on which camp or lodge you will fly from in Serengeti. Child rates are available in certain cases for children between 7 and 16 years of age. Children below the age of 7 years are not allowed.

An early start is necessary with passengers expected to be ready and waiting by 4 to 5.15am at their respective Lodge or Camp reception desks, this again dependent on how far you are from the take-off site. You will be collected for a transfer by road to this take off site, with the flight typically being air borne by 6.00 to 6.15am. During the flight you will fly over various parts of the Serengeti eco system below. Upon landing about an hour later, a delicious sit-down breakfast awaits, complete with waiting staff and a full hot breakfast 'in the bush' accompanied by chilled sparkiling wine or champagne. Drop off back to your hotel follows right after breakfast, with a brief game drive enroute.

Booking the Balloon flight: Please send us your preferred date which has to be at earliest, the second day of your stay in Seengeti. We need to know where in Serengeti you will be staying the night before, so as to check if a timely transfer is possible to the nearest Balloon ride take off site. Cancellations due to the Balloon not taking off are a possibility though rare, mainly due to adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds or heavy rain. In the event of a Balloon not taking off, passengers are refunded in full less minimal administration fees. You may also check out our Serengeti Honeymoon Safari packages.

Not all safaris require a four-wheel-drive vehicle; in fact, one of the most popular safaris requires no wheels at all. Since 1989, Serengeti Balloon Safaris has helped park visitors take to the skies to spot animals and watch the park's famous Great Migration . The company's fleet of eight-, 12- and 16-passenger hot air balloons carries travelers annually across Central Serengeti (and seasonally through the Western Corridor and Southern Serengeti) to give them a bird's-eye view of the park. The safari guide collects visitors at 5 a.m. so that the balloons and their passengers can rise alongside the sun. Flights last about an hour, after which passengers gather, surrounded by the park's lush plains, for a sparkling wine toast and an "Out of Africa" English-style breakfast.

Some recent travelers bemoaned the balloon safari's early departure time and high price tag, but most say that the experience is worth it. Former visitors were also impressed with Serengeti Balloon Safaris' staff and pilots, who reviewers described as friendly and knowledgeable.

Hot air balloon safaris, which include round-trip transfers, the one-hour hot air balloon ride and breakfast, cost $546.20 per person. Advance bookings are recommended to ensure availability. You can reserve a balloon safari through your tour provider or at one of the park's lodges. Children 6 and younger, pregnant women and travelers with select mobility and health conditions are not permitted to participate in this excursion. #1 The Great Migration

The primary reason to visit Serengeti National Park is to witness The Great Migration. Considered one of the world's largest animal migrations, The Great Migration involves more than one million wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and a variety of other animals traversing the Serengeti annually in search of food and breeding grounds. From December to June (the Serengeti's wet season), the animals head south to Naabi Hill and Southern Serengeti. As temperatures rise and the dry season sets in, the herd travels through the Seronera River Valley and the Western Corridor before crossing the Grumeti River and moving north to the  Lobo Valley  and Bologonja Springs . After several months of grazing in greener pastures, the hoofed menagerie turns around and starts the process over again.

Keep in mind the animals' whereabouts when booking Serengeti accommodations. If you're visiting in the winter, stay in the southern plains, and between July and November, set up camp in Central Serengeti, the Western Corridor or Northern Serengeti.

Are Serengeti Balloon Safaris Worth the Price?

When we booked our safari in Tanzania, we had the opportunity to take a hot air balloon ride in the Serengeti. We are no strangers to hot air balloon trips (having taken a hot air balloon in Cappadocia many years ago) and knew we would have to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see animals from above.

But then we got to the price tag- $599 per person during our visit in 2022.

Not only was this price tag a shock, but it was also more than double just about any other hot air balloon ride we’ve ever taken or considered booking anywhere in the world.

We booked it anyway.

Ultimately, we enjoyed our hot air balloon ride and had a pretty incredible experience- so much so that we would book a trip again without hesitation. But looking back on it the question of whether it is worth that price remains, and it is all based on one big caveat that comes down to a bit of luck- actually seeing animals.

What All is Included on a Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Ride?

Hot Air Balloon Filling Up in the Serengeti

While not all hot air balloon companies are created equal, most Serengeti hot air balloon excursions follow a similar format. Namely, you are picked up from your lodge in the wee hours of the morning, transferred to the launch site, have a 50-75 minute flight over the Serengeti in a balloon (often holding roughly 16 passengers), are served a traditional sparkling wine toast upon landing, and finish with a robust bush breakfast before being transferred back to the visitors center to be picked up by your driver or hotel.

We went out with Serengeti Balloon Safaris, and our lodge pickup was promptly at 5 am for a sunrise launch (mid-September sunrise was approximately at 6:30 am) and was finished by about 10 am. Those staying at lodges further away from the launch site may have significantly earlier pickup times as well (other passengers in our car had a 4:30 am pickup, for example), and these times can be variable depending on sunrise by season.

Bush Breakfast in Serengeti

Before talking about what animals we saw from our hot air balloon ride, we should take a moment to talk about the bush breakfast as well because it was somewhat opulent complete with full table settings under a tree, free-flowing sparkling wine, our choice of a chef-made English breakfast or Tanzanian breakfast, pop-up toilets (aptly named “Loo With a View”), and so much more. I’m not saying I ended up drinking an entire bottle of sparkling wine by the time the experience was over, but I am also not going to deny drinking an entire bottle of sparkling wine by 9 am, either.

Suffice it to say, the bush breakfast is one of the reasons why the price of the experiences is elevated over other more traditional flights- they go all out for it!

Bush Breakfast in Serengeti

So, what can you see from the hot air balloon? We have to say it depends!

What Can You See from a Serengeti Balloon Safari?

Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Serengeti

When you take a hot air balloon ride in the Serengeti, there are two things worth discussing about what you can see- animals and the Serengeti itself.

The Serengeti itself is a vast plain that is roughly half the size of Belgium. As it is fairly flat in the central region, when you rise above in a hot air balloon you can see for miles upon miles with a view that truly is unrivaled. At times, your pilot may take you higher into the air to catch these vast vistas (and to adjust course via the changing winds at altitude), whereas other times you may be flying low and slow quite literally feet off the ground.

Sunrise Over the Serengeti from Hot Air Balloon

The latter was one of my favorite parts of the overall experience as the viewpoint felt comparable to drone footage you see in nature documentaries. That slow glide over the grass on the hunt for animals is truly hard to put into words.

On the animal front, going out in a hot air balloon is a lot like going out on safari- it is all about luck in what you see.

• Planning a trip? Find a flight deal . • In need of a room? Check out hotel and apartment prices. • Taking a cruise? Find a cruise itinerary for your journey. • Don't overlook picking up a rental car or day tours as well!

Hippos from Above

Will you see zebra and other forms of bok? Most likely. Will you see hippos? If your launch point and wind direction are like ours, chances are probably pretty good you’ll fly over some water sources with hippos. Will you see migratory wildebeest? That would likely depend on the season. Big cats? Well, you have to be lucky there- and thankfully we saw a pride of ~10 with a kill.

While it is probably quite likely that you will see many animals from a balloon ride in the Serengeti, distance is a component here that needs to be factored in as well. Our lions were quite far away, and I only got a few good photos simply by having a 600 mm telephoto lens (no one else in our basket was as lucky and I found myself relaying the total lion count to the group as a result). Conversely, the hippos we saw were just a few feet below our basket as we flew directly overhead.

Lion Pride with Kill From Serengeti Balloon Safari

Your mileage will vary here, which is the biggest factor in determining if an experience like this is worth it.

Is a Hot Air Balloon in the Serengeti Worth It?

Hot Air Balloon and Acacia Tree

The big question on whether a Serengeti hot air balloon excursion is worth it boils down to whether or not you actually see animals . As with most safari experiences,  actually seeing animals is never a guarantee and we, unfortunately, cannot provide any extra help on this one. That said, we can tell you how the companies do their best to ensure you spot as much as possible!

If you’ve been on safari before, you likely know that most all drivers are in constant communication with others inside any given park. If one driver spots a lion or something unique, they radio it out to everyone else who then proceeds to rush over to catch the action. This, of course, is not possible in a hot air balloon as you simply can’t turn around on a whim. So if a lion is to the west and you are heading east, you are most likely out of luck.

Passengers in a Hot Air Balloon in Serengeti

That being said, your pilot is going to be in radio contact with the other balloons flying nearby and via a robust ground support team as well so whenever an animal is spotted by someone outside of your basket, they’ll know about it. When these come from balloons or cars well ahead of your own balloon, your pilot may be able to use the winds to adjust their flight path accordingly.

Hot Air Balloons Over the Serengeti

On our own flight, flying low to the ground resulted in us moving in one direction, but higher helped catch different winds to move another. It wasn’t robust control, but our pilot did use these to help get us a bit closer to animals that other balloons ahead of us spotted all the same. (So there are possibly some perks to not being the first balloon in the sky!)

This is where the trouble comes in. Is it worth $600 per person to fly over the Serengeti in a balloon if you only see the Serengeti from above? I would say absolutely not . Is it worth $600 per person to fly over the Serengeti if you see lions, hippos, and more animal sightings? Absolutely. Even if you consider that the bush breakfast is probably worth $100 per person, whether the money works out for you can only be realized after the experience is over.

Living the Dream on a Hot Air Balloon Safari

So while I would throw down the money to enjoy this experience again, I also will be holding my breath until we see something to justify the price tag.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of a Hot Air Balloon Ride

Serengeti Balloon Safaris Sparkling Toast

So, let’s say you’re fine with the cost and the risk of possibly not seeing animals and booked a hot air balloon ride in the Serengeti. What next? Well, we have some tips for you!

First, and perhaps most importantly, it is worth reiterating that hot air balloon rides generally leave really early in the morning. This, coupled with the time of year you visit the Serengeti, means that it is likely to be quite cold (it was mid-60s F on our September flight) and you should plan to wear layers if the weather is looking chilly. A light sweatshirt was fine for me, but be sure to look at the forecast for your exact dates to plan accordingly.

Second, hot air balloon rides are very dependent on having good weather conditions beyond temperature. Things like wind, rain, and more can cause rides to be canceled outright. Is this likely in the dry season like when we visited? The odds are probably quite low. But outside of that, you do have to go in knowing there is a greater-than-zero chance of a flight being canceled on any given day for reasons outside of your control.

Serengeti from Above

Third , the launch, landing, and breakfast spots are 100% in the bush. This means you are out in the open, possibly in thick brush, and the like. Our company brought a pop-up toilet, but likely set it up nearby to an ant nest as a few people got bit. These were more annoying than painful (thankfully they weren’t fire ants), but wearing long pants, long socks, and possibly tucking your pants into your boots is not a bad idea.

Fourth, most balloon companies in the Serengeti use what they call an astronaut start and landing. That is to say, you climb into the basket angled on its side, lay down in a launch position, and the balloon picks you up/tips you over at the start and end of the ride. As such, you shouldn’t plan on taking too many personal items and plan for them to be in a bag that is near your feet during launch and landing for safety. I was thankful to have my camera be able to stay around my neck, but I think I only got a pass because my unique camera strap had it firmly at my hip as opposed to near my face where it could bounce and hit someone.

Hot Air Balloons in the Serengeti Safari

Ultimately, the hot air balloon companies in the Serengeti have a pretty respectable operation and have the overall experience down to a science. While science still cannot guarantee an animal will walk right underneath your basket, we were in great hands from start to finish with this truly amazing (and premium) experience. Whether it is worth that price tag, however, is still up to you to decide.

Description of Hot Air Balloon Safari Serengeti

The flight of the balloon safari serengeti lasts for 1-1,5 hour (depending on the weather) and starts at sunrise. This means an early departure from your lodge at around 4:45 am. After the hot-air balloon safari, a champagne bush breakfast will be waiting for you to make the experience even more unique than it already is.

Each trip is guided by a licensed pilot and big team to handle the preparations of the hot-air balloon.

*Note that children are permitted from age seven and above.

Best time to do the Ballon Safari in Serengeti

The dry season (June to October) is the ideal time for a hot-air balloon safari in the Serengeti. During the rainy months (March, April & May), some balloon rides are still available, but the actual flight is more dependent on weather conditions. During heavy rains and/or winds the balloon unfortunately can’t take off. In this case the flight will be cancelled and your payment will be fully refunded or reschuled to another day if your trip-itinerary allows it.

Balloon safari serengeti price

The price of the balloon safari costs around 550 USD. The ride, transfers and champagne bush breakfast after the landing are all included in the price. There are options for vegetarian’s available.

It surely is not cheap, but its definitely worth it. The balloon ride is great for special events like honeymoons, birthdays, other celebrations or just because it’s simply amazing.

*Kindly be informed that the Serengeti balloon safari is exclusively offered as part of a complete itinerary and cannot be reserved independently, as the flight occurs within Serengeti National Park. However, if you are currently accommodated in central Serengeti, there may be a possibility to book the balloon safari as a standalone activity. Please inquire with your accommodation for further details and availability.

Experience the magical Serengeti from the sky on a hot air balloon safari ! Drifting above the African savannah plains, while watching herds of animals beneath you, is without a doubt a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I did my first hot air balloon safari in Serengeti National Park with Adventures Aloft; an unforgettable experience that was on my African safari bucket list for a long time.

For most of us, a balloon safari in Africa is an expensive activity, but in all honesty, it was worth every dollar spent on this exclusive safari trip in the sky! In this article, I will share my experience and detailed information about what to expect on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti, Tanzania .

Balloon Safari in Serengeti National Park Tanzania

Serengeti. National Park is a protected area part of the Serengeti-Mara EcoSystem and is one of the  top attractions in Tanzania , known for its stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife. The Serengeti is home to a wide variety of animals including the Big Five , as well as other species such as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, hyena, and topi.

The park is also known for its annual wildebeest migration , during which millions of wildebeest and zebra travel across the park in search of food and water. Balloon flight locations in Serengeti, Tanzania

Where does the hot air balloon fly in Serengeti? There are several set locations in Serengeti to start your balloon safari . The best location for this exclusive game-viewing activity from the sky depends on the density of wildlife in a certain area of Serengeti National Park, the location of your safari lodge or hotel , and the ballooning operator you choose to go with.

We did our hot air balloon safari in Serengeti with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris . Because of our location at the amazing Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp , we started near Seronera in Central Serengeti, 5 kilometers from the Visitors Centre.

Balloon Flight in Serengeti with Adventures Aloft

Central Serengeti  offers a great diversity of wildlife including wildebeests, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and the highest concentration of large predators in Serengeti.

Lions on Serengeti Balloon Flight

For over 25 years, Adventures Aloft is one of East Africa's most experienced balloon operators with operations in the Masai Mara in Kenya , Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and three locations in Serengeti National Park. Apart from a balloon location near Seronera , they also have a starting point in Northern Serengeti in Kogatende and in Togoro in Central Serengeti.

Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris in East Africa

Adventures Aloft was the first balloon company flying in the Kogatende area in Northern Serengeti. Kogatende is often referred to as the Switzerland of Serengeti, because of the landscape with hills and the majestic Mara River flowing through the area. This is also the place where the great wildebeest migration can be witnessed between July and November. Between May and July, the Togoro area is a great place to see the great migration as well. Togoro is known as the ‘golden plains of the Serengeti’ dotted with Acacia and Sausage trees.

What to bring on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti | Pre-briefing?

After booking your hot air balloon safari, a staff member will explain some important information about your pick-up in the early morning, what to wear and what to expect. We had this pre-briefing at the Seronera visitor center  in Central Serengeti one day before the balloon safari. Most of the time, this pre-briefing takes place at your lodge in the evening before you’re going for your Serengeti balloon safari.

Pamoja Serengeti Luxury Camp in Central Serengeti

What to pack for your balloon safari? It’s recommended to wear safari clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring a light windproof jacket or sweater for the cold mornings. To protect yourself from the sun, it’s a good idea to bring a hat and sunscreen . For the balloon flight , it might not be the best idea to wear a hat, but you will be happy with it during the bush breakfast on the Serengeti plains.

Don't forget a pair of binoculars to have a closer look at the wildlife and birdlife. Also bring your smartphone and/or a camera . There's so much to video and photograph in Serengeti from a hot air balloon! I took a small camera bag including some personal belongings and stored it at the bottom of the basket. However, be mindful of what you bring on the balloon flight as there's not too much space to store bags on the floor.

Serengeti Hot Air Balloon ride

I thought it would be cold in the morning, high up in the air. However, it wasn't cold at all! The hot air balloon floats with the wind so there is no wind chill. Apart from that, the balloon gets heated, so you will definitely feel that warmth. As you climb over the Serengeti the air also warms up. Therefore, there is no need to wear too many layers .

In this pre-briefing , Adventures Aloft will also communicate the exact pick-up time at the lodge. Be prepared to get up (very) early, because the hot air balloon safari in Serengeti starts before sunrise!

Balloon Safari in Serengeti before sunrise

Balloon ride pick-up and transfer

Your balloon adventure starts before dawn, meaning you will depart from your lodge between 04.00 and 05.00 in the morning . Aloft Adventures arranges pick-up and transfers from most camps in Serengeti National Park. In the very dark, you will be picked up by a driver who will safely take you to the starting point of the balloon safari.

Sunrise over the Serengeti plains

There's something special about waking up under a sky full of stars and watching the Serengeti come to life . Our drive took about 45 minutes, witnessing the first light in the form of a purple sky. When you’re lucky, you might see some animals en route. We for example saw a lion and a hyena along the road which was very exciting.

Coffee, tea, and safety briefing

As soon as you arrive at the starting point of your Serengeti balloon safari, you're welcomed by the staff. It's still dark at that point, but the sky is already turning into beautiful purple colors. While the staff is preparing the balloon for the flight, you can enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee with a cookie. The hot air balloon gets heated to give it the much-needed lift to fly. The crew holds the basket with ropes while the balloon is getting filled with more hot air.

Heating the hot air balloon in Serengeti

Shortly before departure, you will receive simple safety instructions with a safety belt . The staff will tell you how to position yourself in the basket and what to expect during the flight. When the balloon is ready for departure, you can enter the basket and secure your belt to the basket. The basket doesn't sway because it moves with the wind, so you don't have to worry about motion sickness.

Take-off balloon ride over Serengeti plains

Each hot air balloon can carry 12 to 16 guests , divided into four compartments. This allows extra safety in the basket, everyone will have enough space, and lovely views are guaranteed! We were 3 persons in each compartment, meaning we had a total of 12 guests.

Experience the majestic Serengeti from the sky

When everyone has entered the basket, the balloon pilot is ready for take-off! Your pilot will heat the hot air balloon, and it will smoothly lift in the air. After take-off, you will soon witness a perfect sunrise over the Serengeti plains .

Sunrise Balloon Safari Serengeti

It’s such an exciting and peaceful experience, I loved it! Because the balloon floats with the find there is no turbulence and you won't hear a loud motor. It's just you and the hot air balloon drifting over the sweeping Serengeti plains, with a birds-eye view of the animals beneath you and the sunrise in front of you.

Serengeti Balloon Safari at sunrise

The flying altitudes, controlled by the pilot, vary between 300 meters above the ground and skimming treetops for a panoramic view of the Serengeti. The average flight lasts about one hour. Depending on the weather conditions and finding a place for landing it can take a bit longer or less than 60 minutes. All flights of 40+ minutes are charged as full.

What wildlife can you see on a hot air balloon safari in Serengeti?

You can see many animals on a balloon safari in Serengeti. We saw a pride of lions , giraffes, an elephant herd marching over the plains, various hyenas, birds, and many plains game like wildebeest, topi, zebra, and other antelopes. It was a memorable experience to witness the Serengeti from above!

Pop the champagne!

After enjoying the Serengeti plains for about an hour from a birds-eye view, the pilot searches for an open space suitable for landing and makes a landing announcement to get ready for the descent. For landing, everyone has to face in the same direction and sit on the bottom of the basket. If you follow those rules, a smooth landing is assured.

Champagne Celebration with Adventures Aloft Balloon Safaris

During the balloon flight, the pilot stayed in touch with other staff members of Adventures Aloft, that were ready to assist at the landing spot. After getting out of the basket, our experienced pilot popped the champagne to celebrate a fantastic flight experience over the magical Serengeti. After the toast, the driver took us to a beautiful set-up breakfast site in the middle of the Serengeti plains.

Bush Breakfast in Serengeti after Balloon flight

Champagne bush breakfast

While you’re still full of excitement about the Serengeti balloon ride, you will arrive at the breakfast site to enjoy an extensive champagne bush breakfast with fresh fruits, fresh juices, and warm and cold dishes, like eggs of your choice, sausages, and pancakes. The food is freshly prepared by the chefs, with all dietary requirements in mind.

When everyone finished breakfast, you will be rewarded with a personal Serengeti balloon flight certificate , a nice souvenir of a memorable moment in the sky.

After this celebration, you will be taken back to your lodge or other agreed meeting point, including an en-route game drive where we saw this tree-climbing lion, hippos, and elephants.

Serengeti balloon Safari – Ballooning in Serengeti

  • June 6, 2021

Serengeti balloon safaris

Balloon flights depart daily at 06h00 from four launch locations inside Serengeti National Park: one adjacent to Seronera all year, and others in the Ndutu region (from 25 December to 15 March), the Western Corridor (from June to October), and northern Serengeti (from June to October) (from July to October). The encounter

Although it is not inexpensive, a balloon safari is well worth the money. Floating serenely above the trees as the sun rises over the horizon allows you to see the infinite Serengeti grasslands from an unparalleled vantage point. Because we leave extremely early in the morning, you could see some nocturnal predators getting ready for the day.

Most flights will feature portions flown at a higher height, enabling you to enjoy uninterrupted views of the Serengeti; other portions may entail low-level flying, with the possibility of seeing animals. Highly skilled pilots may follow rivers and streams, gliding barely meters above grunting hippos or straying giraffes. Flying low enables you to get some amazing aerial wildlife photography. You travel over the plains wherever the wind takes you, while balloon workers in their trucks follow you from the ground.

The Great Migration and Hot Air Ballooning

The greatest chance of witnessing the Great Migration with its vast herds of wildebeest and zebra is to plan a flight in the Ndutu region, where enormous herds assemble between December and March. The other sites may also enable you to witness the Great Migration from above, but keep in mind that the herd is nomadic and may only remain in a certain place for a short length of time, if not only a few of days. This implies you’ll need some good fortune on your side.

Suggested Packages

Serengeti Game Drive

The cost of a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti.

A Serengeti balloon flight costs US$ 550 per person (including the US$ 40 Tanapa ballooning charge). This price includes transportation from your lodge or camp to the balloon launch location, the balloon flight, and a champagne brunch (after landing). The flight will take anywhere from 50 to 70 minutes. The breakfast site is put up in a different place every day, depending on the landing site. You will be sharing the balloon with up to 16 other people. Considering a balloon safari?

Prepare yourself for a very early start. The shuttle from the Seronera area departs at 05:30, while the shuttle from the other lodges in the vicinity departs at roughly 04:00. Please remember to bring warm clothes as well as a bag to store your camera, binoculars, and other personal stuff. We can organize departures for a Serengeti balloon safari from most Serengeti hotels and camps. We highly advise reserving a balloon safari in advance since it is an extremely popular activity that sells out quickly (especially during peak season).

Your Experience

From your camp to the balloon

From your camp to the balloon

0400 – 0515hrs.

Some things are worth getting up early for and this is certainly one of them. Rising before the birds and heading out in the silence of the pre-dawn towards the launch-site is all part of the anticipation. Perhaps one of the Serengeti’s more elusive inhabitants will be caught in the headlights on this nocturnal game drive.

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

Keeping safe & preparing to fly

0615 - 0645hrs.

Your pilot takes you through the important safety briefing ahead of your flight as the sky begins to lighten and the crew inflates the balloon - an envelope of savannah gold and acacia green billowing into the cool morning, lit by the flames of the burners. You climb into the basket and prepare to lift into the dawn.

Serengeti from the sky

Serengeti from the sky

0645 – 0815hrs.

Each flight is a different journey dictated by the direction of the wind, where the sights and sounds rise from the ground to meet you. We know where we’ve started but we don’t know where we will return to earth. This is part of the adventure. Sometimes the basket will be gently brushing the tips of the grass and then climbing, climbing through the layers of air until you’re high enough to see the curve of the horizon, painted gold and pink by the early sun. Our pilots not only have years of experience in harnessing the African wind, but are also interpreters of the wild lives in the ebb and flow of the landscape below. Around an hour or so after you lift into the sky, the basket will return to the plains of the Serengeti. But it’s not over yet.

Celebrating a tradition

Celebrating a tradition

0815 – 0830hrs.

“The Winds have welcomed you with softness. The Sun has blessed you with its warm hands….” The balloonist’s tradition is to toast the flight with bubbly. A short walk or drive from your landing spot will find you raising a glass to your time in the skies. We then seek to take care of earthly concerns and whisk you off by safari car to our special Serengeti breakfast spot.

Meeting hunger with plenty

Meeting hunger with plenty

0830 – 0930hrs.

There is truly nothing to compare with breakfast served under the sweeping canopy of an acacia in the middle of the Serengeti plains. Tropical fruit, bread baked this morning and eggs cooked in the bush (or a lovely avocado option), all made more delicious by the location, and served on linen, bone china and Sheffield cutlery in an 'Out of Africa' style. Shoulder to shoulder with your fellow passengers, this is a time to soak in the exceptional flight you’ve just been a part of and absorb the moment.
