Tour de France standings, results: Belgium's Jasper Philipsen prevails in Stage 10

After their first rest day on Monday, the world’s best cyclists returned to the road Tuesday for Stage 10 of the 2024 Tour de France .  A flat 116.4-mile ride from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond, the stage culminated in a classic sprint finish that saw Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen finally win his first stage of the 111th edition of the Tour.

Philipsen’s victory followed several runner-up performances last week, including a demotion for deviating from his line during Stage 6’s sprint finish.

“Last week was an endless week for us with some bad luck,” Philipsen said after his win. “It’s a big relief that we can finally show our strength.”

This victory marked Philipsen's seventh career Tour de France stage win.

Philipsen's Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate Mathieu van der Poel led the sprint out of the peloton, setting up Philipsen to edge out Eritrean sprinter Biniam Girmay .

A runner-up finish for Girmay — who triumphed in Stages 3 and 8 — was enough to retain his lead in the points classification for a sixth straight stage.

The top 10 general classification leaders remain unchanged as Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) holds onto his yellow jersey. Tomorrow’s mountain stage, a 131-mile route from Évaux-Les-Bains to Le Lioran, is set to shake things up as Pogačar will look to extend his lead by replicating his dominant stage 4 win .

Here's a full look at the 2024 Tour de France standings after 10 days of competition.

Tour de France Stage 10 Preview: A Sprinter’s Stage With Potential for Crosswinds

After Monday’s rest day, the the riders return on Tuesday with the Tour’s flattest stage.

Stage 10 - Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond (187.5km) - Tuesday, July 9

The Tour’s second week begins on Tuesday with Stage 10, a 187.5km stage from Orléans to Saint-Amand-Montrond that’s probably the easiest stage in the 2024 Tour de France.

The race begins in Orléans, along the Loire river, and then begins the long ride south through the Sologne forest that’s bordered in the north by the Loire and in the south by the river Cher.

timeline

The day’s Intermediate Sprint arrives after just 57km–in Romorantin-Lanthenay–which is early enough in the stage that we could see some sprinters try and soak up whatever green jersey points are left after the breakaway passes through.

Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) has a commanding 96-point lead over Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in the Tour’s Points competition and could choose to sit back and save his legs for the end of the stage–especially if a big breakaway is up the road and takes the majority of the points available in Romorantin-Lanthenay.

The final hour of the stage could be tense. The roads are rather exposed after the race exits the forest, and with three direction changes in the final 30km, crosswinds and echelons are a real threat.

le tour de france 2013 stage thirteen

That’s exactly what happened on Stage 13 in 2013 , the last time a Tour stage finished in Saint-Amand-Montrond. As the peloton raced toward the finish, Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish and a few of his Omega Pharma–Quick-Step teammates took advantage of some late-race crosswinds to break the peloton into echelons. A leading group of ten riders soon emerged and Cavendish outsprinted Slovakia’s Peter Sagan to take his second win of that year’s Tour.

The finale of this year’s Stage 10 comes pretty close to duplicating the finale from 2013–including a super-sketchy series of corners inside the final kilometer. The organizers better hope that crosswinds break the race into echelons, because bringing a large peloton through those corners–at field sprint speed–could get dicey–even with a modified 4km “safety zone” at the end of the stage.

It’s a flat finish, but the sprint before the sprint will be crucial as anyone who doesn’t make it through those final corners at the front of the bunch–or has to brake while going through them–will lose their shot at taking the win.

Riders to Watch

le tour de france 2013 stage thirteen

Stage 10 is expected to end in a field sprint. But with a chance of crosswinds in the final hour, the stage could go to a sprinter who can handle himself if the race breaks into echelons–perhaps someone who has some experience in the spring Classics, races in which the weather can often play as big of a role as the terrain.

That makes Girmay a top favorite. In 2022 the Eritrean won Ghent-Wevelgem, a Belgian Classic in which crosswinds frequently blow apart the peloton. This could also be the day in which Philipsen–who’s winless so far this year after winning four stages and the green jersey in 2023–finally breaks through in this year’s Tour.

Last but not least, there’s Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan). The 39-year-old scored his record-breaking 35th stage victory on Stage 5 , but could add No. 36 by winning for the second time in Saint-Amand-Montrond.

And as far as the General Classification is concerned, unless crosswinds catch someone napping, Stage 10 is not expected to bring changes to the overall standings. That means Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) should have no issues holding onto the yellow jersey.

How to Watch Stage 10 of the Tour de France

You can stream Stage 10 of the 2024 Tour de France on NBC’s Peacock ($5.99/month or $59.99/year). If you’re looking for ad-free coverage, you’ll need a subscription to Peacock Premium Plus, which runs $11.99 per month or $119.99 for the year.

This stage could be a slow one. Coming right out of the Tour’s first Rest Day, the riders won’t be in any hurry to get to the finish–and there’s little along the way to make things exciting.

So while the race is expected to finish around 11:35 a.m. EDT, we think that’s a bit of an optimistic estimate. We’ll start checking on the peloton’s progress at about 10:45 a.m. EDT–in case there are crosswinds–and then make the call accordingly depending on how far the riders are from the finish. If nothing else, make sure you’re watching with about 10km to go.

Tour de France 2024 stage 11 preview - a punishing day in the Massif Central

Will the breakaway make it all the way to the line, or will the GC favourites have other ideas?

Words: Stephen Puddicombe

Photos: James Startt

Date: Wednesday July 10, 2024 Distance: 211km Start location: Évaux-les-Bains Finish location: Le Lioran Start time: 11:20 CET Finish time (approx): 16:54 CET

Continuing in a southern direction from the spa town of Évaux-les-Bains in Creuse to the Cantal region in Auvergne, stage 11 sees the riders travel through the Massif Central. Formed during the Variscan orogeny during the Paleozoic several hundred million years ago, these highlands are characterised by dark volcanic cones and granites and metamorphic rocks. Though not as high in the heavens as the Alps and the Pyrenees, the altitude is high enough for the region to have its own winter sports destinations and ski resorts, including one of the region’s biggest in Le Lioran, where stage 11 finishes. Local politician and future president Georges Pompidou played a role in its development, and attended the inauguration of the impressive Téléphérique du Plomb du Cantal cable car in 1967.

In terms of the Tour de France , the Massif Central presents a useful geographic feature to throw in a climbing stage in between the Alps and the Pyrenees, and for stage 11, the organisers have designed a classic second week through the mountain range. It’s set to be a gruelling, punishing day — at 211km, it’s longer than any other stage of this year’s race, and, with a total of 4,350 elevation gain, contains more climbing than any stage so far.

Most of that climbing is concentrated in the final quarter of the stage, making this a backloaded day that should see some serious fireworks, both in the race for the stage win and potentially the GC. The final 50km is in fact identical to stage five of the 2016 edition, which should therefore be a useful template for determining what might happen. That day, Greg Van Avermaet won solo by dropping Thomas De Gent on the penultimate climb of Col de Pertus, having already ridden clear of the rest of the day’s nine-break, even before the day’s official climbs, showing just how testing the undulating terrain is in this region. This was when Van Avermaet was at the peak of his powers as a puncheur, and he went on to win the Olympics road race the following month — an incentive for hopefuls for gold next month in Paris to get up the road and test their legs.

The third-to-last climb of Pas de Peyrol is the hardest of the stage, averaging 8.1% for 5.4km, and in 2016, Nairo Quintana’s Movistar team used it to drop to major GC rivals, Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali. Neither of the following Col de Pertus or Col de Font de Cère climbs are as demanding, and Contador and other dropped riders were able to rejoin the group of favourites, but an attack from Romain Bardet towards the summit of the latter saw Contador dropped again finish 22 seconds behind a peloton with only about 20 riders left in it. These climbs are, therefore, hard enough to cause GC gaps among the favourites, if anyone is willing to attack.

Tour de France 2024 stage 11 profile preview

Route profile sourced via ASO

Looking at the stage’s  parcours , it seems likely that a rider from the breakaway will celebrate success in Le Lioran. The first half of the stage seems relatively rolling , however , it is in the second half of the stage where the pitches steepen – similar terrain to Liège-Bastogne-Liège – making it perfect for the breakaway to gain some time on the peloton in the run in to the finish. EF Education-EasyPost has been a very active team so far when it has come to being in the breakaway, and we don’t expect the American team to hold back on stage 11, especially when  Ben Healy ,  Neilson Powless , and  Alberto Bettiol  all suit this type of terrain. EF Education come to the race looking for stage wins, and this seems a good opportunity for the team dressed in pink.

Maxim Van Gils  (Lotto-Dstny) has performed well throughout the opening week, with his best placing being fifth on the first stage from Florence to Rimini. He suits this type of terrain and its similarities to the Ardennes, where he placed fourth this year, will only benefit the 24-year-old. Now the team’s sprinter is out of the race, Lidl-Trek will be targeting more than just the sprint opportunities. They could look to send  Tom Skujinš  into the break, or even  Jasper Stuyven , who just fell short of a stage victory on stage nine.

Other riders who could be in with a chance of winning the stage if they can get into the break will be  Alexey Lutsenko  (Astana Qazaqstan), who is strong on a day like this, as is  Tom Pidcock  (Ineos Grenadiers), winner of this year’s Amstel Gold Race, and  Michael Matthews  (Jayco Alula), a rider who boasts a strong sprint but also the ability to climb when things get punchy.

This stage is also a prime opportunity for  Wout van Aert  (Visma-Lease a Bike) , however , it seems that the Belgian rider is all in for his support for GC teammate Jonas Vingegaard. It is a different story for his long-time rival  Mathieu van der Poel  (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who is at this Tour in support of Jasper Philipsen , but has the opportunity to go for his own success having helped his sprinter to a stage win this week. The world champion is one of the world's best Classics riders, so he’ll be one to watch on this stage.

Despite it looking like a breakaway day, there are three riders sitting in the top four positions on the GC that thrive on this type of terrain –  Tadej Pogačar  (UAE Team Emirates),  Remco Evenepoel  (Soudal–Quick-Step), and  Primož Roglič  (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). All three have won races like this and have demonstrated that they are here to race (something Pogačar and Evenepoel showcased on the race’s gravel stage, attacking at multiple points ). Out of the three of them, Pogačar would be the favourite to come out on top.

Stage 11 winner prediction

We think Ben Healy will take that win for EF Education-EasyPost. He has looked strong so far and could look to launch a stage-winning attack on the stage's last few climbs.

Lydia Ko

ORLANDO, Fla. — Lydia Ko wasn’t worried. Yes, 2023 was a challenging season that saw her earn just two top-10 finishes and miss out on her title defense at the CME Group Tour Championship. But Ko wasn’t stressing too much about the state of her game as she turned the page to 2024.

In her 11 years on the LPGA Tour, the now 20-time Tour winner has experienced plenty of setbacks, each time recovering and returning to the pinnacle of women’s golf not long after being in the valley. Knowing better than anyone how to stage a comeback, Ko's final result on Sunday at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions should have surprised no one.

After carding four under-par rounds at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club, Ko won for the 20th time on the LPGA Tour, defeating Alexa Pano by two shots to take home the first title of the 2024 season at her home club in Orlando, Fla.

“I thought I would cry but nothing is coming out,” Ko said after the win. “As much as the season was not the way that I would've wanted going into 2023, I felt like I still finished strong. That gave me good momentum for this year. Just like how 2022 was an unbelievable year and 2023 was a huge question mark, like you can turn it around really quickly. I'm just going to keep working at it.”

Starting the day with a two-shot lead over Pano, the 26-year-old parred her opening five holes before picking up her first birdie of the day on the par-3 6th hole to move to 13-under overall. She grabbed another birdie on the par-5 9th hole and backed that up with a birdie on No. 10 to get to 14-under, but Ko made a bogey on the 11th hole to erase that effort and drop back to 13-under.

She steadied herself with three pars on 12, 13 and 14 before striking again on the par-5 15th hole to lead by five with three holes to play. Playing alongside Ko, Pano tried to give chase by recording three birdies in her last five holes, but Ko handily fended off the 2023 rookie’s charge, making two pars and a bogey on 18 to close out her 20th career victory and become the seventh woman in LPGA Tour history to reach 20 wins before age 27.

“This is a great and comfortable way to start the season,” said Ko. “I haven't played particularly that great at this event before, so to go in with a two-shot lead today was a little bit of a comfort cushion to rely on. But I knew that it was going to be windy today, and the cold was going to be a big factor, so nobody was going to shoot super-low scores. I tried to be really steady. There were nerves coming down the stretch, but I felt like I tried to stay as patient as I could.”

Ko’s LPGA Tour counterparts know how important it is for the former Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 to have success. Thirteen-time LPGA Tour winner Brooke Henderson was happy to see the New Zealander playing well again and knows that she and every other player on Tour will need to be in tip-top shape if they want to be able to successfully compete against a Ko who is winning once again.

“Lydia is the best. I've always really looked up to her,” said Henderson. “She's such a great person, and obviously, an amazing player as well. To see her back at the top is great, especially after she didn't have quite the year she wanted last year. Definitely got it going now, so we all better look out.”

Pano remembers meeting Ko on a few different occasions as a young fan and has enjoyed the opportunities she has had to play alongside her, particularly relishing the chance to do so during Sunday’s final round at Lake Nona.

“Always a blast to play with (Lydia). She is one of the nicest people I've ever met, and today was a great day,” said Pano. “We were joking around on 18 with my dad that she might have won more times than I've been alive. She's so impressive. I am always going to be a fan of hers. Getting to compete alongside her is an honor and something I've always dreamed of doing.”

With her Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions victory, Ko is now one point shy of qualifying for the LPGA Tour’s Hall of Fame and is just the 29th different player in LPGA Tour history to earn 20 or more career wins. But Ko doesn’t feel like the generational, game-changing talent she has become over the years. She’s just Lydia.

“When you come to events like this and you see so many girls that want to get your autograph or take photos, that's when it really hits me,” explained Ko. “I'm like, ‘Why are they asking for my autograph?’ I feel like I'm just like anybody else here in the room. I don't think I am that special. I'm just lucky to be able to do what I love doing, and the game of golf has given me so much. And if I can inspire one (or) more of these girls to have the dream to play right here at the Tournament of Champions in the future, that's my job well done.”

But Ko has plenty of goals that she still wants to chase, the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame being one of them. And the 26-year-old knows that if she’s going to reach that mountaintop, she will need to continue to put her head down and do the work, something that Ko is more than well-versed in at this point in her storied career.

“I think whenever the announcer on the tee says, ‘Lydia Ko, 19-time winner on the LPGA,’ I'm like, ‘Whoa, I won 19 times. That's really cool,’” said Ko. “To have the first number change, that's awesome. To be part of the small group that has won more than 20 times, to be in that 20 club is really cool. Last year, I was chasing the Hall of Fame. I felt like I could have, with the way I was playing in 2022, I could back it up with another great year. Look where it put me.

“I'm not going to think about it much. I just got to strive to be the best golfer I can. If my career leads me to becoming a Hall of Famer, that's awesome. I'm just a South Korean-born Kiwi playing this game of golf, and who knew I would be standing here and have played in the Olympics and have won on our Tour?”
