  • This tour visits France and Italy (plus Greece on the tour extension). In order to enter these countries, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date extending at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code PRE.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Paris and depart from Rome (or Athens on the tour extension).
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who have purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours.
  • When you arrive in Paris, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a moderate physical activity-level tour. You can expect casual walks and plenty of time to explore throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a steady-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • 3 full days of included activities in a row (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach
  • Occasional transportation by plane
  • About 3 hours of bus time daily

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2 miles per day - this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Cobblestone streets can become slick when wet.
  • The terrain around the Roman Forum and the Colosseum includes inclines and uneven stairs.
  • Access to the Acropolis on the tour extension requires travelers to navigate a steep hill including uneven stairs with no railing.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.

Climate Considerations

  • In Paris, temperatures range from 40sF in winter to low-80sF in summer, with occasional heatwaves in the summer months (June-September).
  • In Rome, temperatures range from 50sF in winter to 90sF in summer.
  • For travelers on the Athens extension, temperatures range from 50sF in winter to 90sF in summer.
  • In the summer months (June-September), travelers can expect heatwaves with temperatures consistently above 90F in Rome and Athens.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!
  • This tour includes various modes of transportation, including flight and private motor coach. Some modes of transportation will have raised platforms or steps and often not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • A flight from Paris to Rome is included in the price of your tour. (The tour extension also includes a flight from Rome to Athens.)
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one personal item per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers, which includes a flight.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights. Please note that your included on-tour flights may have more restrictive baggage limits.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the strength of the air conditioning in European hotels/buildings is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • France (and Greece on the tour extension) operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • Italy operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, F, or L plugs with two or three small, round pins.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • Please note that codeine (commonly found in headache medications) is banned in Greece, and you may face prosecution if you bring it into the country.
  • The water is safe to drink throughout your tour unless posted otherwise.
  • This tour includes two dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • For a picnic with French flair in Paris, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés, cured meats, fresh-baked bread, and fruit. In the cities, sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, while mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from cafes. In restaurants, the prix fixe option is a popular way to enjoy a set three- or four-course menu for a good price.
  • Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese, and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily's arancini).
  • For more authentic meals in Italy, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • On the tour extension, Greece’s warm climate ensures a constant supply of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Salads served with aromatic olive oil, feta cheese, and oregano are plentiful. Simple grilled fish and meat are integral to Greek cuisine, as well as squid and octopus. Don't miss the spinach and cheese pies, called spanakopita.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10-$12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the euro on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • France and Italy are 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET). Greece, on the tour extension, is 2 hours ahead of GMT and 7 hours of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in France and Italy (and 7 pm in Greece on the tour extension).
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.

Rome rooftops and landmarks colorful sunset view, capital city of Italy

Road trip from Paris to Rome

If there's anything that can compare with waking up in the beautiful city of Paris, it's finding yourself among the monuments of Rome just a few days later, so why not take a road trip between these two unforgettable European capitals? You can even make a quick pitstop in Switzerland along the way.

The 1780 km road trip from Paris to Rome via Lyon, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, the Cote d'Azur, Cinque Terre and Florence takes 21 hours to complete. You can also travel through the Alps to see Geneva, Milan, Bologna, San Marino and Rimini.

Whether you'd prefer to major on buzzing larger cities or to discover World Heritage Sites and Renaissance gems, this is a road trip that definitely deserves a place on your bucket list. Keep on reading to find out what it has in store.

How far is Rome from Paris, and how long will the road trip take?

Rome, with its historic architecture and unbeatable culinary scene, is around a 14-hour drive from Paris if you stick to the autoroutes all the way.

Add on just a few more hours driving through and you might find yourself taking in stunning views from Mont Blanc or dipping your feet in the Mediterranean as you travel along the Cote d'Azur.

If you head south through the Alps via Geneva and Milan, the 1620-km drive will take you around 20 hours to complete. Although you could cover this distance in a couple of days, there's so much to see along the way that we'd recommend allowing at least 8 days to make the trip.

A little longer in both time and distance is the 1780-km route through Florence, which takes you along the French and Italian coast all the way from Marseille to Pisa. You'll need around 21 hours, split over at least 8 or 9 days, to complete this trip.

If you're finding it hard to decide between the two routes we've put together everything you need to know to help make your mind up.

Roaming around the famous and gorgeous Tour du Mont Blanc

Best road trip route from Paris to Rome

A road trip from Paris to Rome takes you through some of the most exciting and beautiful cities in Western Europe as well as the stunning landscapes of the Alps or the Mediterranean coast.

Staying inland on the Milan Route you'll visit Dijon, Geneva, Milan, Bologna and San Marino on your way to Rome. You can also stop at smaller Italian cities which are famous for their delicious cuisine. Modena is known for its tortellini, gelato and balsamic vinegar, and Parma is famous for cured ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Along this route you'll see a wide range of landscapes from the hills of the Bourgogne region to the Swiss Alps, then on through the fabulous Italian countryside.

If you'd prefer to spend some time in coastal cities, we'd suggest looking at the Florence Route, which is an incredible way to discover this part of the Mediterranean. On the way south you can stop in some gorgeous cities including the culinary centre of Lyon and France's oldest city, Marseille.

You'll also travel through the stunning Cinque Terre, Pisa and Florence as well as stopping in smaller cities like Arezzo and Bolseno.

Whether you'll be packing your hiking boots or your bathing suit, keep on reading to find out what's in store on this fantastic road trip!

The Milan Route

Much of this route is simple to navigate, as you'll be following the autoroutes through most of France and then on into Italy. Starting out on the A6, head south through Parc Regional Naturel du Gatinais Francais then continue on past Auxerre before branching off at Pouilly-en-Auxois to reach Dijon.

From here follow the A39 as far as Bourg-en-Bresse before swinging east to cross the Swiss border and reach Geneva. Heading back into France, the autoroute continues on to Chamonix - stop off for fabulous Alpine hikes and mountain views before the Mont Blanc Tunnel takes you into Switzerland again

After passing famous Alpine favorites Cormayeux and Aosta you'll arrive in Italy and then pick up the A4 towards Milan.

Famous vintage tram in the centre of the Old Town of Milan in the sunny day, Lombardia, Italy. Arch of Peace, or Arco della Pace on the background.

When you're ready to move on from this stylish city, the autostrada takes you from west to east via Piacenza, Parma, Modena and Bologna en route to the coast at Rimini. Take a detour to see beautiful Ravenna along the way too.

After heading inland again through the city-state of San Marino, it's time to slow the pace a little and enjoy a jaunt through the back roads of Emilia-Romagna. Follow the Marecchia River as far as Novafeltria then immerse yourself in stunning views as the road passes through Perticara and Pietra Bassa.

Next, merge onto the SS3bis which follows the Savio River as far as Lago di Quarto. Stay on the same road as it takes you through lush green hills, passing Verghereto before you cut through Tuscany and on into Umbria.

Your next milestone is beautiful Perugia, and from here the E45/SS3 bis transports you to Terni and then on to Orte. From here, pick up the autostrada again and simply follow it south to your final destination, Rome.

The Florence Route

This route also starts out on the A6 but continues south to Beaune and Macon before you reach the wonderful city of Lyon. From here the autoroute follows the mighty River Rhone all the way to Avignon before branching off towards the country's oldest city, Marseille.

Next, continue west, detouring if you have time to admire the beautiful landscapes around Aix-en-Provence that inspired the works of Cezanne.

You'll hit the coast at Mandelieu-la-Napoule as the autoroute glides along the Cote d'Azur. Hop off to explore the buzzing coastal towns of Cannes and Antibes before reaching the regional centre of Nice.

From here you can either continue along the autoroute to reach the Italian border or, if you have time, take the slower coast road or corniche to visit Villefranche, Beaulieu, Cap d'Ail and Eze and try your luck in the casinos of Monaco.

The coast road continues through Bordighera and Sanremo, but you can cut back up to the autostrada any time you need to pick up speed.

Once you reach Genoa, you'll approach the fabulous Cinque Terre via SS1. You'll probably find it easier to park up and walk or take local transport between these picturesque coastal villages so make sure you leave some time to explore.

When you're ready to move on, make your way towards Santo Stefano di Magra, where you can pick up the E80 and head south along the coast towards Pisa.

Next, the route turns inland to visit Renaissance Florence before continuing south via the A1 to Arezzo and then on to Orvieto where you'll turn off to take the regional road through Tamburino to reach Bolsena on the lake shore.

From here the SR2 lets you admire the Lazio countryside before you reach Labaro and enter Rome from the north.

Best places to stop between Paris and Rome

One of the great things that really great road trips have in common is that the places you'll visit along the way are just as special as your final destination. The route between Paris and Rome is one of these trips.

Here are just a few of the amazing stopovers you can make along the way:

Shop until you drop in Milan

About halfway between Paris and Rome, Milan is a must-see Italian city that's impossible to discover in a single day, so it's the perfect choice for an overnight stay.

Known for its fashion scene and architecture, this busy metropolitan city is a great contrast to the serene countryside that precedes it.

If there's one spot you absolutely have to visit in Milan, it's the Duomo, Italy's largest church and the centerpiece of the entire city of Milan.

Evening scene along the Naviglio Grande canal in Milan, Italy.

Elsewhere in the city, the iconic fresco of Da Vinci's Last Supper is located in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church. Make sure to book tickets well in advance as viewing slots are limited and in high demand.

Dating back to the 15th century, and built on an even older fortification, Castello Sforzesco remains one of the largest citadels in Europe and is absolutely worth visiting.

Centrally located, Château Monfort is a beautifully decorated 5-star boutique hotel . Set in a historic building with stylishly themed rooms, you can also relax in the beautiful full-service spa here.

If you're ready to put your feet up after a day exploring nearby Piazza San Babila or the fashion area of Via Montenapoleone, head to the fantastic bar where they'll mix your favorite cocktails or browse the impressive wine list. There's also a delicious breakfast menu to get the next day off to a great start.

See the Leaning Tower in Pisa

Pisa is an enchanting, small city around two thirds of the way along the Florence Route. Best known for its famous Leaning Tower, it also boasts many other wonderful attractions. It's a calmer and less crowded alternative to staying in nearby Florence, though it has a vibrant nightlife too.

Tourist visiting the leaning tower of Pisa, Italy on a sunny day

Once you've seen the iconic Leaning Tower, spend a little longer exploring the Campo dei Miracoli to see some of the other architectural gems that surround it.

Nearby, the Palazzo Blu is a must-see for art lovers who will be interested in its engaging Italian art collection.

Close to the Leaning Tower, you'll find Grand Hotel Duomo , a well-appointed and stylish hotel which has spacious rooms and a great location. In fact, you can see the tower and other city landmarks from its beautiful rooftop terrace.

Round off your day with a drink on the terrace looking out across the city. Or if you're in the mood for something livelier, head to Piazza Garibaldi which comes to life in the evening.

Where to stay when you reach Rome

Just a few steps away from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona you'll find The Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel . The luxurious rooms here come complete with wonderful amenities including Acqua di Parma toiletries, and you can enjoy a complimentary buffet breakfast during your stay.

With a free fitness center and its own Michelin-starred restaurant, this hotel makes for a fabulous high-end hotel experience while you're in Rome.

You'll feel so rested that you'll be able to really immerse yourself in your tours of the vibrant city's ancient monuments and historical sites, before indulging yourself on a meal of delicious Roman cuisine and a glass or two of Italian wine.

Best time to go on a road trip from Paris to Rome

There's so much to do in Rome and whatever time you visit, you'll find a museum, archaeological site or delicious restaurant to enjoy in this sprawling and historic city. That being said, depending on how much you enjoy heat and crowds, you may be better off choosing certain seasons over others.

Summer in Rome is generally hot, with average highs exceeding 30 degrees Celsius and average lows rarely dipping below 15. This also happens to be the busy tourist season, meaning that attractions, tours and events can get booked up. Prices will rise with the temperature too.

Piazza di Spagna in Rome, italy. Spanish steps in Rome, Italy in the morning. One of the most famous squares in Rome, Italy.

As you'd expect, winter is much cooler, with typical temperatures ranging between 3 and 15 degrees Celsius. It rarely dips below freezing though, and if you're lucky enough to catch good weather you can see the famous monuments under dazzling blue skies. Check out the Piazza Navona Christmas Fair if you're here in December too.

Rates for attractions and accommodation in Rome are at their lowest in the winter, with the exception of the holiday season and Carnevale in February. Come January, many of the city's most-frequented boutiques offer amazing discounts, so this is also a great time to visit for fashionistas.

Spring and fall are both wonderful times to visit Rome, with temperatures averaging between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. Spring sees the celebration of Easter, and the city is especially beautiful as the foliage returns and flora blooms.

Fall is equally a wonderful time to visit. It offers lots of events in the realms of theatre, opera and dance, including the Rome Film Festival in October and Roma Jazz Festival and the Festival Internazionale di Musica e Arte Sacra, which both take place in November.

Whenever you visit, the sights and sounds of the Eternal City will speak for themselves, just as they have done for so many centuries.

Paris Olympics

The Best Time to Visit Paris Might Just Be During the Olympics

The Games are making Paris quieter than usual, ideal for a late-hour trip to the Olympics or enjoying a lazy afternoon at a Parisian café

“Less busy than usual.” That’s what pops up on Google Maps when this intrepid reporter is looking to book a table in the elegant Paris neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

In fact, no reservations are needed across Paris as the mix of negative headlines and pre-Games hype is keeping away the hordes during these Paris Olympic Games .

Hard-core sports fans are piling and there are big crowds for major events, including this weekend’s road race time trial and mountain bike races , but several venues are seeing empty seats.

Paris is devoid of the masses of summer tourists who typically clog the City of Light every July and August.

That’s not to say there are no tourists, but there are certainly a lot less than normal.

There are no long ticket lines at Musée d’Orsay, and no waiting list for a lunchtime table at Les Deux Magots. The metro and RER lines are quiet and it’s easy to zip around the city by bike.

“Très dommage!” said a taxi driver Sunday morning. “Normally in summer we are booked one day in advance, now we are all waiting 30 minutes for a fare.”

That lament echoes across Paris’ typically tourist-swamped Left Bank.

Tables on the terraces of the Rue de Buci were sitting empty on a Saturday night, and museums and top tourist sites have plenty of same-day tickets.

The normally busy streets from Le Marais to the Arc de Triomphe are eerily quiet.

“Everyone left the city if they could and the tourists are scared to come,” said one hotel receptionist. “We are normally booked solid all summer, now we have free rooms during the Olympics.”

Empty streets, empty seats

Paris Olympics

It’s the same in nearly every Olympic Games.

Pre-Games hype sends a bolt of fear among the locals and scares away tourists who expect lockdowns, security checks, road closures, and traffic jams.

And a lot of that is true.

The Eiffel Tower is closed off to tourists, and many of Paris’ top attractions have been converted into sports venues, including the Place de la Concorde, Gran Palais, Les Invalides, and the area around the Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower.

Some of the famed bridges over the River Seine are also closed, including the gold-fringed Pont Alexandre III and others, but most have re-opened after the opening ceremony Friday night.

The entire city center of Paris along both sides of the Seine, roughly from the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame, was on a multi-down restricted zone that was open only to residents or hotel guests.

More than 44,000 ugly metal barriers were put up in Paris this week as part of massive security preparations ahead of the Olympics, which formally kicked off yesterday. Locals are not thrilled. https://t.co/Knpj7Ic05Y pic.twitter.com/FCptREAViP — POLITICOEurope (@POLITICOEurope) July 27, 2024

That’s since been lifted, but a strong police presence remains high across the city as officials are clamping down to try to avoid any risk of a terrorist attack or political disturbances.

So far, things have been very quiet.

What’s keeping fans away?

In the run-up to the Paris Games, hotel prices were marked up dramatically, with rooms going for $900 a night and more during the key Olympic dates between July 26 and August 11.

Business travelers as well as tourists are staying away, either rescheduling meetings or going to nearby Spain or Italy instead.

One report in Euronews said hotels were sitting on 25 to 40 percent unbooked inventory, and prices have been slashed to try to fill rooms.

This reporter booked a room for the Olympic Games barely a week before the opening ceremony, and found dozens of reasonably priced rooms in the city center, with double rooms with breakfast starting at $175 per night, prices not seen since before COVID-19.

Airlines have also reported under-sold flights, with Delta and Air France both expecting to lose $100 million during the Games, according to media reports.

There are plenty of tickets available for most Olympic events across all sports, and things typically pick up during the second week.

Paris looks gorgeous for Olympic Games

Paris

There’s still plenty of Olympic buzz around Paris, and the city is absolutely gorgeous as it’s dressed up and well-lit for its closeup for the worldwide TV audience.

Sport fans pour out of the venues and into bars and cafés, often watching more Olympic events live on TV and cheering on their home nations.

National and sponsors “houses” — a longtime Olympic tradition — keep the vibe and booze flowing at different spots across Paris.

For Parisians who’ve stayed home, a few hassles here and there with road closures, construction sites, and detours is a small price to pay for a few weeks of relative calm.

“It’s like we have our city back,” one Parisien said as they sat idly on a shady terrace. “Paris has not been this quiet in decades.”

Paris right now might not be ideal for that once in a lifetime trip, but it’s perfect for anyone who wants to watch the Olympic Games in person or just loll away an afternoon at a Parisien café.

The elite men’s and women’s road races are this weekend. It’s still not too late.

A tour of Paris: The men's and women's Olympic road races highlight city's spectacular sights

Paris olympics cycling.

PARIS (AP) — The road races in cycling at the Olympics are an opportunity for the host city to shine.

The routes that the men and women traverse over several grueling hours and hundreds of kilometers of racing typically pass some of its most iconic historical and cultural landmarks. They provide a stunning backdrop to the marquee event of the cycling program at the Summer Games, while making for spectacular pictures on TV as the riders zip by at high speeds.

Few cities can match Paris when it comes to historical and cultural landmarks.

The course for the men covers 273 kilometers (170 miles) on Saturday while the women covers 158 kilometers (98 miles) on Sunday. And here is a look at what riders will see as they covered the cobbles and tarmac in the race for a medal:

Pont d'Iena and the Eiffel Tower

The start of the men's and women's road races is the Pont d'Iena, the bridge crossing the River Seine commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Jena. It connects the Trocadéro on the Right Bank, which was the highlight of the opening ceremony just over a week ago, to the Eiffel Tower on the Left Bank, where the Olympic beach volleyball stadium was built.

Palace of Versailles

The races will head west out of Paris on their way to Versailles, the former royal hunting lodge-turned-opulent residence that was commissioned by King Louis XIV and used by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The spectacular palace is a UNESCO world heritage site. It contains more than 2,300 rooms, including the famed Hall of Mirrors, along with picturesque gardens that have served as the backdrop for Olympic equestrian events during the Paris Games.

The French Countryside

The road races will continue deep into the countryside. They pass the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, where the French completed the first podium sweep of an event at the Summer Games in a century in men's BMX racing Friday night , and where track cycling begins Monday. They also will flash by Le Golf National, the site of the 2018 Ryder Cup and the men's and women's Olympic golf tournaments , before hitting the Vallée de Chevreuse, where the Yvette River flows.

Sightseeing in Paris

The parade of iconic locations truly begins when the riders return to Paris. They will catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, where the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci hangs, and Palais Garnier, the famed opera house. Later, they traverse the Canal St. Martin, which runs south to the Seine, and visit lesser known sights such as Café des Deux Moulins, named in part for the nearby Moulin Rouge and famous after appearing in the film "Amélie."

Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur

The men's and women's races will likely be decided by finishing circuits at Montmartre , the hill in the northern part of Paris that is popular among artists and offers grand vistas of the city. The sharp climbs and uneven cobbled surfaces will make for a difficult test for the riders, but the sight of brightly colored jerseys whizzing by the white-domed basilica of Sacré-Coeur should provide one of the most memorable moments of the Olympic road race.

The race to the finish

After their third trip up Montmartre, riders head down toward the Seine and cross the Pont du Carrousel, which connects the Louvre on one bank to Musée d'Orsay on the other bank. The roads eventually widen as riders take a right-hand turn and follow the river back to the finish, where they cross in front of the Eiffel Tower on a flat run-in to the line.

“The routes of the Olympic road cycling events will showcase the beauty of Paris in the most captivating way,” Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo said of the course. “Trocadéro, Montmartre, Bois de Vincennes, Pont Alexandre III — some of the capital’s most beautiful sites — will serve as the backdrop for exciting races, bringing joy to cyclists and spectators alike.”

Later, they traverse the Canal St. Martin, which runs south to the Seine, and visit lesser known sights such as Café des Deux Moulins, named in part for the nearby Moulin Rouge and famous after appearing in the film "Amélie."
