On this tour you are on board the Manhattan, a beautiful boat in the style of the yachts of the 1920s. Lots of wood and glass await you and you can either enjoy the view of the colorful autumn leaves in the heated salon or go out on the outside deck.

The cruise starts at Chelsea Piers, not far from Hudson Yards. Afterwards, you can relax and cruise north along the Hudson River. On the way you can enjoy the view of the New York skyline and the ride under the George Washington Bridge.

On your left and right you will see the forested banks of the Hudson River.You will be surprised how many colorful autumn leaves you will see.  And the best part? The price of the 2.25-hour cruise even includes a free drink!

Hudson River Fall Foliage Afternoon Sail

If you’re looking for a relaxing boat tour where you can experience fall in New York in a very special way, check out this 3.5-hour sailing tour.

Come aboard the luxury yacht Manhattan II and experience this fall cruise on a 1920s-style boat. The tour departs from Chelsea Piers and then heads north on the Hudson River. Sights include the Hudson River Valley, Palisades Park and the George Washington Bridge. 

The price includes a delicious menu consisting of soup, salad, sandwich and fall-themed cookies, as well as a complimentary beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Other drinks are available for purchase at the bar.

Hudson River Fall Foliage Yacht Tour

The Hudson River Fall Foliage Yacht Tour is very similar to the Grand Palisades Fall Foliage Yacht Tour. The only difference is that you will travel on the elegant yacht “Kingston” and the tour lasts 2.5h. 

The Kingston is another ship of the fleet, built in the style of the yachts of the 1920s. Therefore, you can expect a very special atmosphere on board, which cannot be compared with the sightseeing cruises. That’s why these fall foliage cruises are so popular around autumn.

You’ll see an incredible amount of nature as you make your way up the Hudson River – that was something that really surprised me personally. On top of that, this Fall Foliage Brunch Cruise takes place on a very beautiful 1920’s style ship. The atmosphere is really great!

The ship takes you from Pier 62 towards Palisades Park and the George Washington Bridge. You will pass the last part of Manhattan on your right with the Upper West Side and Harlem and go under the impressive George Washington Bridge, the only bridge that connects the state of New Jersey with the state of New York. And on your left you will be able to admire Palisades Park in New Jersey.

You don't need a car to see peak fall foliage in New York—you can take a boat! A number of NYC leaf-peeping boat cruises leave right from Manhattan and sail up the Hudson River, delivering your autumn dreams of gorgeous changing leaves. 

RECOMMENDED: Where to see fall foliage in NYC

This October, we took the  Circle Line: Bear Mountain Full-Day Cruise , which as the name suggests, took us 50 miles north from Pier 83 to Bear Mountain and gave us three hours to hike trails and visit museums and its animal refuge before setting back down the river. It was a wonderful opportunity to escape the city sans car and train for the day and get some fresh air. Better yet, the cruise celebrates Oktoberfest with bratwurst, pork schnitzel, German potato salad, Prop & Peller Bavarian pretzels, and Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer and Warsteiner lager and a live Oompa band. It was a blast to get in party mode while anticipating our hike, seeing the beauty of the Palisades and Hudson Valley, listening to the captain point out landmarks and then relaxing on the way back home to NYC. The cruise goes on Saturdays and Sundays through October 31 and begins at $69 per person, which is really worth it.

We suggest heading out on a weekend brunch cruise, which comes with a three-course prix fixe menu (includes New York bakery pastries, salmon and lox, chef’s autumn salad with roasted vegetables, oven-roasted ham and more) inside the glass observatory of the Yacht Manhattan and Manhattan II across two-and-a-half hours. It takes off on Saturdays and Sundays and tickets are $124-142 per adult and $72 per child 3-14.

The top-rated, two-hour Fall Foliage Luncheon Cruise on Fridays and Saturdays has a multi-course menu including homemade soups such as a spice roasted butternut squash soup or a cauliflower soup topped with prosciutto and Manchego cheese. A roasted pumpkin and candied walnut salad with Chef’s maple vinaigrette, and assorted tea sandwiches are also in rotation on the menu. Autumn is right around the corner, and with it comes NYC’s beautiful fall foliage display. It’s not a surprise that people from all over like to enjoy nature’s final blaze of glory before the winter. When most people think about seeing the leaves changing, they instantly envision a country road. But have you ever considered where to see fall foliage—also known as leaf peeping—in New York City? Let’s find out! 

Where are the best places to see fall foliage in New York?

Residents know that NYC has several hidden nooks—along with glorious parks—where the fall leaves can make them almost forget they’re in one of the biggest cities in the world. 

1. Washington Square – Greenwich Village 

Everyone might talk about Central Park instead, but Washington Square is also a fantastic park. It happens to be a great place to see fall leaves, too, along with people watching. It might be just under 10 acres, but the brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow make it one of the most breathtaking places in the entire city. 

2. Riverside Park – Manhattan

Riverside Park is often considered the best waterfront park in Manhattan, and it also has a stunning array of autumn leaves. There are tons of different trees in the park’s 400 acres, but the best of the best is a 4-mile section that’s often referred to as the Cherry Walk. 

3. Prospect Park – Brooklyn 

When a park has more than 30,000 trees—plus a wide selection of different species—you know it’s going to be good! There is so much to see, so if you’re short on time, head right to the Ravine, which is in the middle of the park. Other good areas of Prospect Park include: 

• White Levy Esplanade – West side of the lake
• Neathermead – Middle of the park (near the Ravine) 
• Vale of Cashmere – North end of the park 

4. Van Cortlandt Park – Bronx 

If you want to leave the crowd behind, take a ride on the 1 train. Go all the way to the very last stop, and you’ll be at Van Cortlandt Park . This hidden gem in the Bronx has more than 1,100 acres, which includes the oldest residence in the Bronx. To see the very best fall leaves, go to: 

• Tibbets Brook 
• North East Forest
• Van Cortlandt Lake 
• Croton Woods 

5. Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Want to spend three to four hours surrounded by the natural beauty of fall? Go to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden ! Everything about this 52-acre space will please your desire to see fall leaves. However, if you don’t have three to four hours to see everything, go right to the Japanese Hill & Pond Garden. There is nothing quite like seeing the Japanese maples in their bright red glory. 

6. Fort Tryon Park – Manhattan

You could spend an entire day wandering this park’s 8 miles of pathways, and you’d be well rewarded for it! That’s because Fort Tryon Park combines fall leaves with history. In fact, it was once where the Battle of Fort Washington took place during the American Revolutionary War. There are two primary areas for leaf peepers to visit: 

• North end of the Stan Michael promenade 
• The Cloisters 

7. Hudson River Park – Manhattan

This 550-acre park attracts more than 17 million visitors annually, and it’s the perfect spot to see autumn leaves. One of the things that make Hudson River Park unique is that you’ll be able to see the foliage on the piers, as well. Another good spot to check out is the unique Little Island and its stunning views. 

8. Forest Park – Queens

Many leaf peepers prefer to have a more solitary experience than most of the parks in NYC can offer. Fortunately, Forest Park has got you covered! This hidden gem features 500 acres, and 165 of those acres are dedicated exclusively to trees. Even better, some of the trees in Forest Park are more than 150 years old. 

9. Green-Wood Cemetery – Brooklyn

This land of the dead comes to life in the fall with a stunning blaze of glory. Trees provide a major part of the ambiance in the 478-acre Green-Wood Cemetery , which makes it one of the best places in the city to take in some fall leaves. Additionally, if you’d like to get a secret off your chest, go to Sophie Calle’s 25-year art installation called Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery.  

10. Roosevelt Island – Manhattan

You’ll need to take a tram from the Upper East Side to access Roosevelt Island , but at only $2.75, it’s well worth it. Enjoy the mature cherry trees, including the Kwanzan and Yoshino trees. They’re so beautiful, in fact, that tourists continuously flock to them. Even better, they’re situated around the waterfront, which creates a truly breathtaking canopy. 

Central Park Foliage

Let’s face it; when it comes to leaf peeping, Central Park in fall is where it’s at! This park comes in at 1.317 square miles (843 acres), which makes it the fifth-largest park in NYC. It has more than 18,000 trees, so we’re going to break it down into the ideal spots in Central Park to visit. 

11. The Mall

The American elm trees that line the promenade are among the largest American elm plantations in the world. It’s a thing of beauty during the autumn months as most of the elms turn a soaring yellow. Anticipating the many fall-time visitors who want to take it all in, the developers ensured there are plenty of benches in The Mall area. 

12. Bethesda Terrace & Fountain

Bethesda Terrace is an anomaly in Central Park, as it is the only formal architectural setting in the entire park. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to listen to live music as you sit on a park bench and take it all in. As one of the largest fountains in NYC, Bethesda Fountain is 96 feet wide and 26 feet high. Plus, it’s surrounded on all sides by some of the most gorgeous trees you’ll ever see.  

13. The Bow Bridge

If you’d like to take a truly iconic photograph of the skyline—including some of the area’s best fall foliage—had to The Bow Bridge . We promise you won’t be disappointed! The 60-foot bridge sits over Central Park Lake, and the reflection of leaves is almost as stunning as looking up at the real thing.

14. The Ramble

 Would you like to feel as if you’d completely left NYC behind while still being within the city limits? The Ramble is a 36-acre section of Central Park that mimics the feeling of being in an actual forest. Enjoy what many have referred to as the “wild garden.” You’ll be able to roam through hilly terrain, winding paths, and rustic bridges, along with getting to see ponds and streams. And, of course, there is a wide array of trees to satiate your leaf peeping needs! 

15. Gapstow Bridge

This bridge stands apart from all the others with its intriguing, almost medieval design. It’s always eye-catching, but the view you can catch from on top of the bridge will take your breath away. All around you, you’ll see tupelo trees, birches, oaks, and cherry trees. These trees always look magnificent, but they turn into something that’s almost out of this world during autumn. Head to Gapstow Bridge to take it all in! 

16. The Reservoir

Although it’s commonly known as The Reservoir , this spot is actually named the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in honor of the late JFK’s wife. The Reservoir has been decommissioned, and it spans 10 city blocks. There is a highly popular 1.5-mile loop that goes around The Reservoir, so expect to see lots of joggers, walkers, and fellow leaf peppers! Prepare to see lots of yellow and red during the fall months, as the two trees featured here are the yellow Yoshino and red Kwanzan trees.  

17. Sheep Meadow 

Visit Central Park’s most popular location to relax and take in all the colorful trees! Sheep Meadow provides the perfect spot to photograph fall’s best views of the NYC skyline. You’ll find 15 acres of land here that is ideal for having a picnic or reading a book. Be aware that because of its popularity, you’ll most likely be at Sheep Meadow with many, many other New Yorkers and tourists. It’s worth it, though, as the trees are magnificent! 

18. Bridge No. 28

Despite being the most photographed bridge in Central Park, Bridge No. 28 doesn’t exactly have a special name, although it does have a nickname: Gothic Bridge. Fortunately, its saving grace is that it’s cast-iron and has very intricate details. This has made it a super popular area to go to when you need to take special pictures, including everything from wedding photos to senior pictures. Being surrounded by gorgeous trees certainly doesn’t hurt, either!  

19. Conservatory Water

Many movies and TV shows have shown Conservatory Water and its mini sailboats. But if you lift your head from the water, you’ll be greeted by stunning orange and red trees during autumn. Go to this spot, take a seat, and let the people come to you. It’s easy to enjoy an hour or two here as you watch the mini sailboats, trees, and people.

20. North Meadow

North Meadow holds one of Central Park’s least-known leaf peeping spots, which is too bad because the area is filled with dogwoods, sugar maples, and hickory trees. Why isn’t it better known? Simple; it’s located at the north end of Central Park, and a lot of people never make their way to it. This is where the locals escape crowds of tourists and take in some of the best fall foliage in New York.

Fall leaves begin to change in early September.

However, they typically don’t reach full peak in NYC until late October.

Best Driving Route for Fall Foliage

There is a practically endless list of fall foliage drives for New Yorkers and tourists to take. Most of them will require a lot of driving, however, before you’ve even truly begun. The good news is that we’ve found a nice driving route you can take that won’t make you drive two+ hours away! 

Northern Boulevard begins in Long Island , and it’ll take you approximately 40 minutes to begin seeing outstanding color from the fall leaves. Follow Northern Boulevard (AKA New York State Route 25A) through the many scenic towns, including Fort Salonga, Brookville, Cold Spring Harbor, and Rosyln.

As a reminder, NYC doesn’t usually have the best color until late October. Keep an eye on the New York Fall Foliage Report to find out when is the best time to take a road trip!

New York Valley has become a famous spot for foliage enthusiast largely due to two main attractions: The Catskills and the Hudson Valley. These two locations are ideal for Fall Foliage Tours with their winding river valleys and wooded mountainsides. Located within close traveling distance to the main city of Manhattan, these two locations provide a great foliage weekend getaway.

New York foliage season begins in mid September and lasts through the end of October. New York foliage begins to change first at the higher and cooler elevations of Catskill Mountains, followed a few weeks later by the Hudson Valley. Peak foliage season begins in the Catskills the last 2 weeks of September, while in the Hudson River Valley fall foliage peaks the last two weeks of October.

In New York you can appreciate the beautiful transition to fall in a wide variety of ways. Enjoy a scenic boat tour as the waters glisten with hues of red and orange, or by train as you cover the vast valleys in one sitting. Hudson Valley Fall Foliage Tours If you desire a more scenic route with an array of pit stops during your travel, you’ll want to take the East Side route of the Hudson River where you’ll find historic mansions, charming towns, and local shops. If you’re more of the rugged outdoors type, head over to the West Side where you’ll find an array of nature trails. Sit back and relax on The Hudson Line of the Metro-North Railroad; this route follows the Hudson River and boasts stunning stretches of fall foliage (runs every 30 – 60 minutes).

Hudson Valley Scenic Drives If you’re interested in a relaxed scenic drive, hop onto U.S. Highway 9 which extends along the Hudson River Valley. Here you’ll be submerged in the valley of fall foliage colors, as you climb the mountainside and enjoy the beautiful display of colors that line the highway. Get out and stretch your legs at the Bear Mountain State Park, or jump off at the Taconic State Parkway where you’ll be completely surrounded by oaks, maples, and more.

Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain State Park These two State Parks are a great place to stretch your legs and appreciate mother nature’s true beauty. Choose from a variety of nature trails that are lined with oaks, birches, beeches, and maple trees. This beautiful verdant coverage changes into a vibrant display of autumn colors from September through October. Once you reach the tops of these mountains you will be awed by the magnificent panorama of the Hudson River Valley and the sea of fall foliage. Bring your binoculars and enjoy views of the Manhattan skyscrapers off in the distance.

Catskills Scenic Drives Enjoy a scenic drive through the Catskills as you wind through picturesque towns, sparkling lakes, and colorful mountainsides. Climb the East side of the mountain with State Road 23(23A) which travels up the mountain through the scenic towns of Cairo, Windham, Palenville and Hunter. Further south you’ll find the scenic State Road 28, which crosses the Catskills from Kingston to Arkville. Take off on 28A to enjoy the autumn colors sparkle off the Ashokan Reservoir. Off of 28A keep a look out for Country Road 47 and Country Road 42 which will take you on a scenic 60-mile loop around the Catskills. If you ever get lost, or are ready for another route, keep a look out for State Road 214, Country Road 19, State Road 55, or Country Road 153, which all provide long stretches of highway with breathtaking views of the mountainside.

Historic Mansions Strolls the property of Jay Gould, the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, or the Roosevelts, and enjoy spectacular landscaping and immense forests that line the properties. These historic mansions provide some of the most beautiful displays of fall foliage, with small forests, trickeling streams, and beautiful garens. A few mansions that are famed for their fall foliage are Lyndhurst, Kykuit, Boscobel, Vanderbuilt Mansion, Wilderstein, and Clermont.

During peak fall foliage season, you can experience New York State’s autumn splendor on winding mountain drives through the Adirondacks and Catskills or on tours of the Hudson, Delaware, and Genesee River Valleys. These Empire State driving routes and tours (and handy maps) will add color to your autumn getaways.

Letchworth State Park

The scenery shifts from bucolic to dramatic on a drive inside  Letchworth State Park , one of the top places to visit in New York State . The Genesee River snakes through a d e ep gorge here, earning the park its "Grand Canyon of the East" nickname. Drivers will find frequent pull-offs overlooking the 600-foot walls of 250-million-year-old sedimentary rock. Don't miss Inspiration Point, where you can view two of the major waterfalls within the park.

Shawangunk Wine Trail

Fall is the perfect season for discovering the vineyards along the Shawangunk Wine Trail, which begins 60 miles north of New York City in Ulster County. Tastings and tours are available at 15 member wineries, and you'll want to visit other attractions along your route, such as Minnewaska State Park Preserve . This 12,000-acre tract adjoining Mohonk Preserve is known for its rugged terrain, which challenges those skilled at technical rock climbing and rigorous hiking. The less adventurous can bike or walk along carriage roads. Be sure your itinerary includes Baldwin Vineyards. With its 1786 stone house and neat rows of grapes, Baldwin is the most photogenic of the region’s wineries.

The Catskills

Two hours north of Manhattan, one of the most striking autumn drives is this route through the Catskill Mountains . Along the way, you'll see iconic scenes depicted in Hudson River School paintings, such as Kaaterskill Creek, and there are plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs and even to soar high above the leaves on a Hunter Mountain Skyride.

Hudson Valley

An ideal drive to view fall foliage, US 9 is the longest north-south U.S. highway in New York. Take your time on this jaunt through Hudson Valley towns from Hyde Park to Saratoga Springs. Hyde Park is home to many historic sites including the Vanderbilt estate, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s home, and the surprisingly modest Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site. For lunch, head up to Hudson, where restaurants and boutique shops are clustered in the city's revitalized, walkable downtown. Afterward, take a short detour onto Route 23 west to Olana: former home of Frederic Edwin Church, a major Hudson River School painter. The Martin Van Buren National Historic Site in Kinderhook is worth a stop, too. And when you reach Saratoga Springs, you'll find plenty to do including celebrating the city's horseracing history at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame .

Upper Delaware Scenic Byway

Route 97 parallels the sinuous Delaware River, which serves as the border between New York State and Pennsylvania. From the south, begin your trip along the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway in Sparrow Bush. Pause to pick up a picnic lunch at the River Market in Barryville. Thanks to its proximity to the water, there are opportunities there and in Narrowsburg to go rafting, canoeing, and kayaking. But the drive's enough of a thrill: The winding stretch known as the Hawk's Nest has been photographed and filmed for many car ads and commercials.

Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway

If it's designated a National Scenic Byway, it has to be good! New York State's 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail traces the shores of the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, the Niagara River, and Lake Erie. Alexandria Bay at the northernmost part is a perfect starting point for exploring a prime segment of the Seaway Trail that extends west to New York's border with Pennsylvania and Ohio. Take US 81 to Sackets Harbor and transfer to Route 3 for optimal leaf peeping until you reach Mexico (that’s Mexico, New York ). Then, turn onto Route 104 to continue this scenic journey.

Amish Trail

Don’t be surprised to find yourselves following a tractor or horse and buggy in this part of western New York. Head west from Cattaraugus on Route 353 and follow signs to Cherry Creek. Along the  Amish Trail , you’ll pass farmsteads where life moves at a quieter pace, and so will you. Follow hand-painted signs to shop for quilts, furniture, and baked goods, and don’t miss dining at one of the bountiful buffets.

Finger Lakes Wine Trail

Add wine tasting to your day of autumn explorations by planning a driving route in the Finger Lakes. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail stakes a claim for being the oldest trail of its kind in America. For an important bit of history, start in Seneca Falls and pay homage to those who operated stops on the Underground Railroad and paved the way for women’s rights. Then, travel south along Route 89, which leads to 14 wineries. Ithaca, home to Cornell University and renowned for its many waterfalls and gorges, lies at the southern tip of the lake.

If you're leaf peeping on two wheels or four, autumn is the best time of year to follow this scenic Hudson Valley route in Dutchess County. Start at Route 9 in Rhinebeck, home to the historic  Beekman Arms inn and restaurant. Transfer to 9G to visit Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, where the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts designed by Frank Gehry has become a landmark. The little town of Tivoli is 10 minutes away and home to Osaka, the best sushi restaurant this side of the Hudson. Route 78 to Route 199 leads to Milan, a rural town with some of the most beautiful roads and views anywhere. Route 308 circles back to Rhinebeck.

Within this cityscape, a NY autumn ushers in crisp air, fabulous foliage, and comfortable sweaters.

But, that’s not all.

There are also seasonal events, hidden parks, scenic day trips, and unique experiences you can only enjoy for a few months each year.

When Does Fall Start In New York?

Technically, fall in New York starts in late September and runs until late December; however, changing weather patterns mean the warm shorts-and-tank top weather can run into October.

Of course, visiting NYC in October feels much different than visiting NYC in December.

This is the northeast, after all, so don’t be surprised if you’re wearing flannels in October and then having a snowball fight during the holiday season!

Things To Do In NYC During Autumn

Here are just a few of the myriad experiences to have in New York in fall.

The 11-day Feast of San Gennaro is based on the tradition of honoring a patron saint brought over by immigrants from Naples. That being said, this September festival along Mulberry Street is equally noted for tons of food stalls selling Italian-American staples.

Bonus: You might spot actor Tony Danza manning one; he’s a partner in Alleva Dairy , a Little Italy cheese shop.

Missed out on the festival dates? No worries. You can still venture around and dine within this Manhattan neighborhood or head up to the Bronx to their Little Italy along Arthur Avenue . In this section of the Bronx, the FERRAGOSTO Festival happens in early September and celebrates this Italian national holiday.

5. Walk along special streets

While walking is the norm here, the streets of New York are not created equal.

In DUMBO, Washington Street is the perfect spot for a perfectly-framed New York photo featuring the Manhattan Bridge and Empire State Building.

In Greenwich Village, Minetta Street is lined with 19th-century architecture and has a curve because of an underground stream shaping its bend.

There is a lot of notable history here, too.

Its chronology runs from being Dutch farmland to becoming a home for freed blacks to turning into a (no longer) rough and rowdy area.

Also, what is now a Mexican restaurant on Minetta had been known as Fat Black Pussycat, where Bob Dylan wrote “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Harlem’s Convent Avenue showcases homes linked to Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, while Brooklyn Heights’ Cranberry Street had screen time in Moonstruck .

6. Head to a beer hall for Oktoberfest

Raise a glass in NYC to this German tradition by ordering some bratwurst or schnitzel and a stein.

Bring your party to  Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria, Queens;  Radegast Hall & Biergarten in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; Bierhaus NYC in Midtown Manhattan; Zum Schneider in Manhattan’s East Village or at its temporary set up along the East River; or Spritzenhaus  in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

7. Explore NYC eateries with seasonal fall decor

A fun way to celebrate autumn in NYC is by eating and drinking at local establishments with festive decor.

Sister restaurants Lillie’s Victorian , Oscar Wilde , and Papillon always go all-out every season with their over-the-top decorations.

Additionally, SERRA by Birreria is a greenhouse-inspired rooftop with beautiful seasonal floral displays. Also, if you’re looking to celebrate your birthday in New York , this is a top pick, not just for the ambiance but also the delicious food!

8. Take a tour of the New York Botanical Garden

Wondering what to do in New York for 4 days , or even on a shorter trip? Here’s an idea:

The 250-acre New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx showcases gorgeous gardens and plants that change with the seasons.

From May through October, tour Brooklyn Grange’s rooftop farm locations at the Brooklyn Navy Yard or Long Island City, Queens.

In the East River,  Randall’s Island Park has events for learning more about what grows at its Urban Farm and seeing its resident chickens. By the way, this island offers an incredible New York night view and is a great spot to go hiking in Manhattan .

10. Discover another kind of farm living

Visit farms from another time that are still around.

Queens County Farm Museum  in Floral Park has a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and a traditional county fair in early October.

Moreover, the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum  is the oldest remaining farmhouse in Manhattan, and the Wyckoff House Museum in Brooklyn has a Saturday farmer’s market from June until November.

Then, there’s Decker Farm in Staten Island’s  Historic Richmond Town , the oldest continuously operating small farm in New York City, where you can pick pumpkins, tour the 200-year-old grounds, see farm animals and enjoy hayrides.

11. Pay your respects at cemeteries

Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery holds various public tours and events relating to those who are no longer with us; it’s also the final resting place for famous New Yorkers, among them, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Leonard Bernstein.

Cypress Hill Cemetery , a burial site linked to Brooklyn and Queens, is where Mae West and Jackie Robinson lay.

The Bronx’s Woodlawn Cemetery schedules walking and trolley tours connected to its occupants and history, with notable names ranging from Irving Berlin to NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia (yes, that’s who the airport is named after).

12. Admire architecture via Open House New York

Every October, Open House New York provides access to participating architectural sites of all types throughout the five boroughs — with a good number of them usually not open to the general public.

13. Cheer on runners in the TCS New York City Marathon

Visiting New York in November?

Watch as participants embark on a 26.2-mile course across the five boroughs on the first Sunday in November.

The best observation areas extend to Fourth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn; the Long Island City, Queens side of Pulaski Bridge; or Fifth Avenue from East 90th to 105th streets, before the runners enter Central Park.

At the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows, the Queens Night Market brings a solid mix of food and arts and crafts vendors in one setting, now until the end of October.

At Fordham Plaza, the seasonal Bronx Night Market runs through October and celebrates the culinary culture of this NYC borough.

You’ll see this attraction on many NYC itineraries , and for good reason.

Located in Fort Tryon Park, this branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is all about medieval European art, architecture, and gardens designed with elements from medieval cloisters and other related sites in Europe.

Before or after the Met Cloisters, check out Fort Tryon Park — one of the top New York Instagram spots and a great place to immerse yourself in nature.

Here you’ll find eight miles of pathways, Hudson River views, and the Heather Garden, the city’s largest garden with unrestricted public access and many plant and tree species.

The park is also the location for an annual medieval festival .

19. See the sunset on the Cantor Roof Garden Bar at the Met Fifth Avenue

Enjoy an outdoor happy hour at this fifth-floor bar at The Met Fifth Avenue, also known by its original name, the Metropolitan Museum of Art .

Weather permitting, the bar is open seasonally from mid-April through October and has an open-air setting with gorgeous NYC views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

But first, give yourself some extra time to wander through this impressive art institution. Reach the bar via the elevator in the museum’s European Sculpture and Decorative Arts galleries.

22. Walk among Wave Hill ’s gardens

23. Visit Bear Mountain by boat

Bear Mountain is a must-have fall day trip from NYC, especially if you want to see fall foliage in New York.

The best part of this excursion — one of New York’s most popular Hudson River boat tours — is the weekend Oktoberfest celebrations taking place in the park from late September to late October.

24. Bike along greenways

Manhattan’s Hudson River Greenway follows the river from Battery Park to Fort Tryon Park, while the Bronx Greenway passes through all of its parks.

Additionally, the Eastern Queens Greenway also goes past parks, while the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway traces the borough’s working waterfront.

25. Hike along Staten Island’s Greenbelt

This 2,800-acre nature preserve has six hiking trails for various abilities and four woodland trails permitting bikes and motorized vehicles.

Grab a map from the Greenbelt Nature Center. Also, consider opting for rental gear to make your trip more sustainable.

26. Get a dose of pop culture

ComicCon takes place every fall in NYC, with comic fans gathering for a dose of pop culture fun.

Even if you don’t actually go in, it’s a fun time to be in New York as the streets fill with people in elaborate costumes.

27. Gaze along the High Line

It’s one of the best fall activities in NYC.

This elevated rail line turned public green space has great photo angles at the Washington Grasslands and Woodland Edge (at 13th Street), Chelsea Grasslands (between 18th and 19th streets) and the Wildflower Field (between 28th and 30th streets).

Through October, Tuesday nights at dusk are for stargazing at Little West 12th.

For two MetroCard swipes round-trip, the Roosevelt Island Tramway provides sweeping overhead views of the East River from Manhattan to the island and back.

29. Visit apparently haunted mansions

The Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights — the oldest house in Manhattan — holds paranormal investigation gatherings to try to communicate with the mansion’s former residents.

Likewise in NoHo, the Merchant’s House Museum delves into the paranormal with various October events in NYC. This New York City building is said to be haunted by Gertrude Tredwell, who once lived here with her parents — though she may not have left.

On Staten Island, the Historic Richmond Town is the site of paranormal investigations in September and October; hear stories about the island borough’s haunted locations.

In October, Lower East Side Pickle Day honors the time when this neighborhood was brining with pickle pushcart vendors. On this tasty day, picklers bring their gherkins to Orchard Street.

While on the Lower East Side (LES), try old-world Jewish delicacies in a modern setting at Russ & Daughters Cafe , a restaurant offshoot of the famed appetizing store.

31. Take advantage of free admission museum evenings

Evenings a bit chilly for you?

Head inside for some art appreciation.

The Museum of Modern Art hosts UNIQLO Free Friday nights from 4pm to 8pm, while the Brooklyn Museum extends its time with Target First Saturdays.

Also on Friday nights, The Morgan Library & Museum is free from 7pm to 9pm and The Whitney Museum of American Art has pay what you wish entry from 7pm to 10pm.

The Frick Collection holds a First Friday evening of the month, from 6pm to 9 pm, except in September and January.

32. Shop for apples at Greenmarkets

Autumn in NYC is all about the apples!

Get your Honeycrisps, Empires, Galas and other varieties without having to leave the Big Apple by buying from regional farmers at Greenmarkets throughout the five boroughs.

33. Get out of the city for some apple picking

It’s an hour and 30 minute trip from NYC to the Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard in North Salem, New York.

From Grand Central Terminal, head southeast on Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem Line train and get off at Croton Falls; then take a two-mile cab ride.

Another great day trip from New York City:

Warwick, which is only 1.5 hours away by car — 2.5 hours by train — and is one of the top places for apple picking in New York State.

34. Take in the scenic beauty at Mohonk Mountain House

Fun fall getaways from NYC abound.

One suggestion:

This New Paltz resort within the Hudson Valley dates back to the 18th century and is one of the most romantic Upstate New York hotels .

Even if you can’t stay the night, the Mohonk Mountain House has day guest packages for visitors, where they can explore its grounds or book spa treatments.

To get there, take the Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central or Amtrak via Penn Station. Get off at the Poughkeepsie Train Station and then take about a half-hour cab ride or Uber from there.

Hiking Bull Hill in Cold Spring is another scenic and worthwhile Hudson Valley experience. Nearby, you can also hike Breakneck Ridge for incredible Hudson River views.

Further upstate, you’ll find the stunning Mt Van Hoevenberg trail as well as the epic Mount Marcy hiking trail , both located in the Adirondacks.

35. Observe outdoor sculptures at the Storm King Art Center

This 500-acre outdoor museum in New York’s Hudson Valley stages large-scale sculpture and site-specific commissions, putting natural settings in unison with man-made works.

Metro-North sells a getaway package with admission and a Harlem rail line ticket to Beacon Station. You can book shuttle service from the station in advance.

36. Hop on the Staten Island Ferry

Along with enjoying a free roundtrip ride, a ride on the Staten Island Ferry provides a different take on New York City’s fall foliage by boat.

Leaving from terminals in Lower Manhattan and Staten Island, you’ll see views of Battery Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park along with trees rooted along Staten Island, Liberty and Ellis Islands, and Governors Island .

37. Bite into freshly made chocolate chip cookies

Is it just us, or does your sweet tooth come out in fall?

Get a gooey baked goodie from the decadent Levain Bakery , a local bake shop favorite known for its giant chocolate chip walnut cookies.

Maman is known for its nutty chocolate chip cookies, while  Chip City offers creative flavors like Cinnamon Roll, Red Velvet Hot Chocolate, and Sweet Potato S’mores.

Moreover, Erin McKenna’s Bakery  has a vegan and dairy-free version — as well as seasonally-flavored donuts!

38. Dig into some mac and cheese

MacShack offers a huge array of options, whether you want to change up your cheeses or your inclusions.

Order the “Mac Daffy featuring smoked duck confit, caramelized onions, and fontina cheese or the “Pizza Mac aka Fort Greene” with fresh tomato sauce, basil, parmesan, mozzarella cheese, and your choice of bacon or pepperoni.

39. Come across a pocket park

In Manhattan’s Midtown, Greenacre Park is a small green escape complete with a 25-foot-high granite waterfall, seating areas, a raised terrace and lush plantings of honey locust trees.

40. Get the picture at Photoville

If you’ll be in NYC in September, Photoville is held in Brooklyn Bridge Park over two weeks during the month.

This annual festival involves repurposed shipping containers being turned into photography exhibitions and outdoor installations.

Speaking of photos, Brooklyn Bridge Park is one of the best Brooklyn Bridge photo spots in NYC .

41. Get a much-needed laugh at the New York Comedy Festival

Every November, the crème de la crème of comedy gather for this seven-day line-up.

Get a chuckle from up-and-coming comedians and catch bits by noteworthy headliners.

42. Gaze at Jack O’Lantern displays

Get out of the city and head to Van Cortland Manor in Croton-on-Hudson for “ The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze ,” an elaborate and electrifying display of structures using real Jack O’Lanterns observed by passing along a walkway.

The event runs from September through November.

If you’re set on going, buy your tickets in advance ASAP as they sell out quickly.

From Grand Central Terminal, take the Hudson Line to Croton-Harmon Station, then get an Uber to the manor.

43. Watch parade balloons inflate

While there are many great Thanksgiving getaways from NYC , there is also a lot to do in the city.

In fact, the day before Thanksgiving, the streets surrounding the American Museum of Natural History on Manhattan’s Upper West Side are where Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade crews get parade balloons ready for the big day.

Watch them working from 1pm to 8pm, with the entry access point being West 74th street and Columbus Avenue.

From there, the public can watch the balloons being inflated on West 77th and 81st streets.

44. The next day, get a good viewing spot for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Early risers should camp out starting at 6am along the west side of the street on Central Park West from 59th to 75th streets, where the parade runs from about 9am until 10:30 am.

If you’re running late, venture further down the route on 6th Avenue, as the parade reaches here around 9:30 am.

45. Hop on a fall foliage brunch cruise in NYC

Savoring a brunch — particularly a boozy brunch in NYC — is a must-have experience.

49. Visit Long Island during harvest season

Visiting Long Island is one of the best things to do in New York in the fall!

Fun fact: Brooklyn and Queens are physically on Long Island, though note Long Island is not technically part of New York City’s five boroughs.

It does make a fun NYC day trip though, especially during fall when it’s harvest season and you can explore some of Long Island’s 50+ wineries .

You can take public transportation, though the easiest way to do this trip is via a tour . This way you have a designated driver and can easily get from winery to winery. It’s truly a highlight of Long Island travel !

50. See Alexander Hamilton’s gravestone

Can’t get tickets to “Hamilton: An American Musical”?

Here’s another option:

Pay a visit, and your respects, to America’s first Treasury Secretary at Trinity Church Wall Street , where he and his family are buried.

Don’t worry, it’s easy to spot the large white marble grave of Alexander Hamilton.

If you know the story of the Broadway musical, you might be aware that his wife, Eliza; his son, Philip; his sister-in-law, Angelica Schuyler Church; and his friend, Hercules Mulligan, are all here, too.

Another idea:

51. Savor dishes at top farm-to-fork eateries

One of the best ways to experience New York City in fall is through the palate.

And the best way to do that:

There’s more than one way to eat an apple. If having it as pie is part of your dessert MO, NYC has a plateful of options.

In Midtown, Little Pie Company puts out their Sour Cream Apple Walnut and Sugarless Apple pies plus their Salted Caramel Apple pie.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds , with locations in Prospect Heights and Gowanus, is also known for their Salted Caramel Apple pie and makes a Brown Butter Apple Streusel.

A different take, the Astoria cookie shop Chip — which now has grown to have multiple locations — bakes an apple oatmeal pie cookie that’s got a sweet and chunky apple filling.

53. Get pumped up for pumpkin

If you’re craving some pumpkin pie — or pumpkin in another tasty format — there are plenty of places to find this seasonal squash.

Two Little Red Hens in the Upper East Side is noted for their Pumpkin Harvest, a super-moist pumpkin spice cake with an apricot pumpkin cream cheese frosting and with a buttercream fall leaf decoration; then there’s their pumpkin cheesecake and cupcake, too.

Donut-lovers can bite into pumpkin flavor with selections from Doughnut Plant , Dough Doughnuts , and The Doughnut Project .

Additionally, pumpkin ice cream gets scooped out at places like the Lower East Side and Union Square’s il Laboratorio del Gelato, or the East Village’s Sundaes and Cones.

Oh, and you definitely shouldn’t miss the chance to get a fall festive Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll pint from Van Leeuwen , which has multiple locations around NYC.

54. Pursue Edgar Allan Poe’s NYC life

Did you know that the poet — known for his tales of mystery and the macabre — lived in New York City for a while?

And some of the places tied to him still stand.

In Greenwich Village, the Northern Dispensary, a triangular building which can be seen from the outside along Christopher Street and Waverly Place, was once a medical clinic that Poe went to.

In the Fordham section of the Bronx, the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage was rented by Poe in the spring of 1846 in the hopes of helping his wife, Virginia, recover from tuberculous; though sadly, she died the following year. Today, it’s managed by the Bronx Historical Society and can be visited.

Brennan Farm House, another home that Poe rented from, was torn down; but, a plaque at its former location at 215 West 84th Street   — now the Eagle Court Apartment Building — marks where he wrote The Raven .

Or so we think.

There’s a conflicting claim of the no-longer-around house’s location and where Poe’s famous poem was penned.

This place is said to be along what’s named Edgar Allan Poe Street — a section of West 84th Street that meets West End Avenue.

The poet-inspired Edgar’s Café was once based near this intersection but now sits farther up on Amsterdam Avenue between West 91st and 92nd streets.

55. Get bookish

For those who love literature, get some title suggestions at the Brooklyn Book Festival in mid-September, which features reading events, author appearances, and other page-turners.

Readers of The New Yorker can attend The New Yorker Festival in October, which features the publication’s writers and editors in conversation with noted politicians, entertainers, and other well-recognized names.

The Printed Matter ‘s NY Art Book Fair features artists, book buyers, collectors, dealers, curators, independent publishers, and other enthusiasts.

56. Swoon over costumed canines

Humans aren’t the only creatures that can participate in NYC’s Halloween events.

In October, The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade in Alphabet City’s Tompkins Square Park gives dressed-up pooches their moment to shine.

Moreover, Carl Schurz Park in Yorkville is the location for the annual Halloween Howl & Healthy Hound Fair , a fun furry procession of pets and their owners.

In Fort Greene in Brooklyn, the yearly Great PUPkin Dog Costume Contest puts pups and their humans to the test with creativity.

57. Spice up your chai tea

Go beyond chai tea lattes at coffee chains and instead head to establishments serving unique styles of this spicy drink.

On the Lower East Side, the Hideout Chai Bar offers masala chai — among other teas — all brewed in pots.

Gasoline Alley has a recipe for dirty chai, Intelligentsia Coffee has a high-marked version of this latte, Black Cat LES has a chocolate chai, and Saltwater Coffee puts out a kickin’ masala chai as well as a vanilla chai, both of which are great for an autumn pick-me-up.

58. Merge through marshlands

Nature spots in NYC don’t always have to be green. Marshlands also make for places for hiking.

While you need a car to get to the Marine Park Salt Marsh in Brooklyn’s Marine Park , an almost one-mile loop gives a small preview of this 500-acre preserve with distant views of Manhattan and Gerritsen Creek.

Inwood Hill Park is home to the last remaining salt marsh in Manhattan. Its Shorakapok Preserve contains a combination of natural forest and salt marsh along with glacial geological formations.

Across from the Shorakapok Preserve, Muscota Marsh is a green space and ecological conservation site offering a good look at the Henry Hudson Bridge.

You can also learn about the marsh from the wildlife observation deck, or by venturing out on to a wooden deck stretching out to the waterway through the native water gardens.

There are places to sit and host picnics across the river from the towering cliffs of the Spuyten Duyvil and the Palisades, which blush under the Manhattan sunset, especially in autumn.

59. Be surprised at Brooklyn’s BAM Next Wave Festival

From October through early December, this annual series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music – commonly known as BAM – puts the avant-garde in art through musical, theatrical, operatic, and dance performances.

60. Walk along the street fairs

During the fall, busy streets in the boroughs get a break from vehicles and get transformed into block parties.

On Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue, the Atlantic Antic Festival in late September features food and merchandise vendors as well as live music performances.

Restaurants and bars set up special arrangements in front of their businesses.

Also in September, the Sixth Avenue Autumn Fair takes over the Avenue of the Americas from 42nd to 56th streets.

And the Hester Street Fair on the Lower East Side happens on Saturdays until the end of October.

61. Tour the grounds of Snug Harbor

On Staten Island in November, the staff at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden conducts fall foliage tours leading into its pond garden and the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

During October, there are ghost-themed tours of the property that was once a retirement home for sailors.

Another neat find:

Produce grown at its 2.5-acre Heritage Farm is sold at the Saint George Greenmarket at St. Mark’s Place and Hyatt Street.

62. Honor Native American culture

While NYC hosts a fall Columbus Day Parade, you can opt to learn more about Native Americans at the National Museum of the American Indian – New York .

Based inside the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, this Smithsonian museum holds permanent and temporary exhibitions along with public programs — including music and dance performances, films, and symposia — exploring the diversity of the Native people of the Americas.

63. Recognize the Day of the Dead

This Mexican holiday honors the deceased through displays and pageantry.

At El Museo Del Barrio , their family-friendly celebration of El Dia de Los Muertos involves face painting, art-making, performances and more.

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum also offers a similar family-friendly event.

64. Come across interesting finds at flea markets

Outdoor flea markets allow for fun browsing and possible buys of just about anything that catches your eye.

Brooklyn Flea splits its weekends by having its Saturdays in Williamsburg — at Kent Avenue and N. 6th Street — and Sundays in DUMBO under the Manhattan Bridge.

On Sundays on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Grand Bazaar NYC is one of the oldest flea markets in the city, with indoor and outdoor shops.

And in Queens, LIC Flea & Food sits along the Long Island City waterfront — and includes a beer garden.

65. Head to historic military forts

NYC’s history includes being a military stronghold, with many sites having a second use these days and can be visited. Some are part of the Gateway National Recreation Area .

Fort Tilden National Park in the Rockaways was built as an emergency protection site during World War I, and during the Cold War held nuclear missiles.

In Bayside, Fort Totten Park was used during the American Civil War, and Castle Clinton National Monument — in what is now Battery Park — was adapted as an entertainment forum, once home to the New York City Aquarium (which later moved to Coney Island) and then a pre-cursor to Ellis Island as an immigrant depot.

Then there is Fort Wadsworth, constructed by the British troops on Staten Island, who held their ground here during the American Revolutionary War.

66. See who is buried in Grant’s Tomb

The actual answer to this question is Ulysses S. Grant and his wife, Julia. They are entombed in what is called “the largest mausoleum in North America.”

In Upper Manhattan, specifically within Morningside Heights, see the General Grant National Memorial and learn more about his time as a Civil War general commanding the Union Army, a president, and more.

67. Marvel at park art

In Queens’ Long Island City , Socrates Sculpture Park is a waterfront green space and outdoor museum with exhibitions and programs such as an annual Halloween festival that features cultural activities, costume making, and a doggie costume contest.

Its tree varieties, from birches to weeping willows, add extra color.

68. Be escorted on a Central Park walk

In October, this grand park is a sight to behold, particularly for those who love taking in fall foliage.

While you can certainly explore the attraction on your own, it helps to know that Central Park Conservancy guides provide an insider’s look at this park through regularly scheduled and themed tours. 70. Check out new Broadway shows

Fall is a special time for Broadway, as the theater scene in NYC welcomes in new shows. You can see what’s playing here or book a Broadway-themed tour here .

Also, for those who like to head off Broadway, the city’s tourism board puts on a September-October promotion each year called Off-Broadway Week where you can snag two-for-one tickets.

71. Look at the Little Red Lighthouse

This light-emitting structure under the George Washington Bridge in Fort Washington Park is the only remaining lighthouse in Manhattan.

It also has its own little festival in early October showcasing art and food vendors, live music and readings of the book it’s the subject of.

72. Visit a community garden in the East Village

The communal green spaces within this NYC neighborhood are a little oasis.

The 9th Street Community Garden — at East 9th Street and Avenue C — is a botanic garden with a gazebo, community space, and a composting setup.

Nearby, the Creative Little Garden on East 6th Street between Avenues A and B is a National Wildlife Federation Habitat.

Once an illegal nuisance, street art has grown into a respected medium fostering partnerships between artists and community leaders and business owners.

The project now includes works done in East Harlem, North Shore Staten Island, Manhattan’s East Village and Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean, aka Flatbush.

Also on the Lower East Side — along East Houston Street and 1st Avenue — First Street Green Art Park is where artists can create work without worry, though they must submit their ideas to the park’s curators first.

74. Pay tribute to veterans

On Veteran’s Day in early November, a major parade happens along Fifth Avenue from 26th to 46th Street starting at noon.

Stop at stations and memorials recognizing veterans from New York, like the New York City Vietnam Veterans Memorial Plaza  — honoring those who served in the Vietnam War.

The bridge reopened in 2015 as a pedestrian walkway after an extensive renovation that lasted over 45 years.

Looking for the best places for NYC fall foliage? We’ve got you covered during this magical time of year in the city! From our parks to tree-lined neighborhoods there are approximately 5.2 million trees in New York City ! WOW, right?

With so many trees you can bet when autumn rolls around you can find stunning shades and hues of crimson, copper, and gold from popular spots like Central Park in the fall through our parks across the boroughs and neighborhoods.

When most people think of fall colors in New York they probably think Upstate, which is full of scenic drives and beautiful places to witness the autumn magic, but don’t forget about NYC foliage – we’ve got them here and it’s quite a mesmerizing experience to see the colors of autumn among the sea of skyscrapers!

We’ve picked out our best fall foliage in NYC locations for you to check out during your trip during fall in New York City . Don’t forget your camera and get ready for some next-level leaf peeping. When are the fall colors in New York?

The best fall foliage in NYC typically occurs during late October through mid November, depending on the season. Believe it or not, there are millions of trees throughout the city, from the parks to residential neighborhoods and NYC foliage is fantastic during this peak season!

If you want to see the vibrant orange, red, and yellow leaves, the fall colors in New York will be at their best plan a trip towards late October and early November.

Best Fall Foliage in NYC locations!

Central park .

Many say that Central Park in the fall is the most beautiful this time of year due to the gorgeous changing of the leaves and NYC foliage! With over 18,000 trees you can imagine how magical it is when the shades of red, yellow, and orange are in full force!

One of the best places to see the fall foliage in Central Park is The Mall and Literary Walk. Near the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, this pathway includes the Statues of Shakespeare and many elm trees. This walk is a must at Central Park in the fall!

While you’re walking The Mall, don’t miss the newest addition to the statues that are placed along this gorgeous line of trees, the Women’s Rights Pioneers monument. The cast bronze statue depicts Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth, and is the first statue erected in the park to depict real women and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment, which granted the right to vote to women.

From The Mall, continue down to Bethesda Terrace for one of the most beautiful and famous spots in the park that also happens to be extra magical during the fall!

Walk through the arcade, listen to a busker and continue to the fountain where you can witness a gorgeous location for fall foliage in Central Park and photos.

Another great spot to see the fall foliage in Central Park is Belvedere Castle. This old folly contains various exhibit rooms and an observation deck that is a great spot to admire Central Park in the fall!

Continue to more fall foliage in Central Park spots at Bow Bridge. This cast-iron bridge is a pedestrian walkway that crosses over the lake at Central Park. Again, this is a great spot to admire the fall colors in New York on the bridge and off to the side looking at the bridge!

Lastly, to see the fall foliage in Central Park, be sure to visit the Gastapow Bridge. This bridge lies over the pond in Central Park and is a great spot to stop and admire the fall colors in New York!

Basically, the entire park is a dream to see fall foliage in NYC, so spend some time wandering by foot and if you want to cover a lot of ground quickly, be sure to rent a bike and scope out our favorite hidden gems of Central Park while you’re at it!

Prospect Park

Just like Central Park, Brooklyn’s sister park, Prospect Park is one of the best places to admire the NYC fall foliage. There are so many wonderful things to do in Prospect Park and there are over 30,000 trees here so you can imagine once the fall colors change this place really gets colorful in autumn hues.

Some of our personal favorite spots to check out are the Prospect Park Boathouse and the Cleft Ridge Arch right behind it which leads to the Concert Grove sculpture park where you can find statues and monuments of famous musicians and composers and a few other creatives like American author Washington Irving and even Abraham Lincoln.

Continue to Long Meadow for more leaf peeping and check out the newly and beautifully restored wooden Endale Arch continuing out of the park to Grand Army Plaza.

If you’re up for an adventure and more fantastic NYC foliage continue to the Ravine, Brooklyn’s only forest that designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (the same designers behind Central Park) made to mimic the landscape of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York right here in the city.

Along this way you will find peace and quiet plus waterfalls!

From the trails, Boathouse, historic arches, and abundance of trees, Prospect Park is a great add-on to see the best fall foliage in NYC. In addition, the numerous green spaces, botanical gardens, and bridges are great spots to admire the NYC foliage. 

Green-Wood Cemetery

One unique way to admire the fall colors in New York is to visit the Green-Wood Cemetery. This almost 500-acre cemetery is known for its Gothic architecture, famous permanent residents interred here, and NYC foliage during the fall.

This rural cemetery, well once rural cemetery as it’s in the heart of Sunset Park, Brooklyn is a great place to explore during the fall. 

Not only can you join a historic walking tour with Green-Wood Cemetery, which we highly recommend and is really interesting, but you can do a DIY tour through Green-Wood Cemetery finding some of the fascinating points of interest, viewpoints, and historic sites including the famous battle sites of the Battle of Long Island (aka Battle of Brooklyn) one of the largest devastations during the American Revolutionary War.

An interesting fact, the cemetery was built in the 19th century and predates Central Park and Prospect Park. In the Victorian era, locals used this rural cemetery as a park because its so beautiful including architectural features like the Gothic-style Brownstone Gate at the main entrance.

The cemetery is also a class III arboretum making it a great place to stop and enjoy the fall colors in New York. 

Brooklyn Bridge Park 

Another great place to admire the NYC foliage during the fall is the Brooklyn Bridge Park! This 85-acre park is located along the East River in Brooklyn with some of the best views of the NYC skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, and Manhattan Bridge the city has to offer.

However, the best places to admire the NYC foliage are more towards the Brooklyn Heights section of the park and away from the DUMBO neighborhood section near the bridges, although there are a few pockets of trees that change colors and are beautiful to witness.

Many pathways throughout the Brooklyn Bridge Park are great for seeing the NYC fall foliage. The Pier 1 Pathways and Pier 3 Greenway Terrace offer secluded trails and immersive ways to see some of the best fall foliage in NYC! If you want to surround yourself with the various leaves of the season, these pathways and playgrounds are a great place to start. 

One of the most gorgeous walks in Brooklyn starts at Brooklyn Bridge Park and makes its way up to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, which offers unobstructed vistas and views of the Statue of Liberty , Lower Manhattan skyline, and the Brooklyn Bridge among the historic mansions behind you lined with giant trees that are extra beautiful in the fall.

New York Botanical Garden

Some of the best fall foliage in NYC can be seen at the New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx. In fact, they even host fall foliage tours here in late November through their 250-acres!

Besides hosting conservatories and gardens of rare plants from all over the world, you can find a fine collection of maple, oak, and beech trees that turn to shades of orange, gold, yellows, and crimson in autumn,

Be sure to check out their website to see when the fall foliage tours take place! As mentioned, typically these happen in late November, when the best fall foliage in NYC is still visible here. And if you’re more of an independent leaf peeper you can totally just explore the grounds on your own!

Don’t miss one of the most impressive waterfalls in NYC either on the Bronx River inside the Botanical Gardens too! This area has a beautiful bridge and a canopy of trees that are insanely beautiful when the leaves change colors.

Met Cloisters & Fort Tryon Park 

The Met Cloisters & Fort Tryon Park are great places to admire the NYC fall foliage and beautiful architecture. Located along the scenic Hudson River in Washington Heights located in Upper Manhattan.

Fort Tyron Park is a public park where visitors can find excellent fall foliage and with unbelievable views of the Hudson River and the dramatic cliffs of the Hudson River Palisades across the river along the 8 miles of pathways to take a stroll. 

Don’t miss the Heather Gardens, one of the best secret gardens in NYC that grows wild heather and be sure to enjoy the views from one of Manhattan’s highest points at Linden Terrace.

You can also find the Met Cloisters here! Inside of the Met Cloisters, aka The Cloisters, an architectural gem and museum which is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and included in your ticket, which is a steal of a deal as these are some of the best museums in NYC . 

The Cloisters also have various medieval gardens, themed galleries, and old chapels that celebrate European architecture along with a rare collection of 15th-century tapestries.

Van Cortlandt Park

Some of the best fall foliage in NYC can be seen in the Bronx! At Van Cortlandt Park, you can enjoy over 1,146 acres of a beautiful urban oasis that feels completely removed from the city!

During autumn you can find fantastic fall foliage and a stunning view of the tranquil water of the Croton Reservoir. To see the best fall foliage in NYC at Van Cortlandt Park, it’s best to explore the center of this hot spot and walk through Woodlawn Cemetery for more gorgeous fall foliage.

Toward the center of Van Cortlandt Park are an abandoned rail line and a freshwater marsh. On these secluded pathways, you’ll be able to see great NYC foliage and views of the water! You’ll also be able to check out the historic water line and the Van Cortland House, the oldest standing house in the Bronx.  

Also, while you’re here, you’re not far from the New York Botanical Garden so you can hit up two of the best places for fall colors in New York located in the Bronx at once!

Also, since you’re visiting in the fall if you’re interested in spooky things or the paranormal, there are areas in this park that are some of the most haunted places in NYC to check out.

The Highline

NYC foliage is always a show-stopper during the fall at The Highline in Manhattan. The Highline is an elevated park, greenway, and rail trail that stretches from 34th St. in Chelsea to Hudson Yards.

This 1.4-mile walkway offers great, elevated views of the city skyline, gorgeous architecture, murals, and art installations, and of course some great fall foliage in the heart of NYC!

Not only can you see the city from up above, but The Highline has lots of plants and trees on the path itself that you can admire from up close.

Before or after your leaf peeping, check out some of the famous galleries in Chelsea or head to the Spanish Market at Hudson Yards. You can also witness more beautiful fall foliage along the trees at the Vessel too!

Owl’s Head Park

This is one of the more under-the-radar places for fall foliage in New York City as many tourists don’t travel this way. You can expect to an impressive display of red, orange, and yellow leaves as well as a view of the Verrazano Bridge! 

For another great viewpoint, head to the Old Glory Lookout too and spend some time walking through the neighborhood admiring the mansions like the Gingerbread House, one of our favorite hidden gems in Brooklyn .

Fort Greene Park

Another one of the best parks in Brooklyn that offers great fall colors in New York is Fort Greene Park and an easy walk from the popular neighborhoods of DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn to visit in Fort Greene . 

Fort Greene Park is a large, 30-acre park that’s a popular hang out spot on the weekends as well as a place to take a scenic stroll. One of my favorite things about this park is that it’s lined with beautiful, historic brownstone homes that you get a peek-a-boo view of between the trees of the park.

Be sure to also walk up and down the neighboring streets like Elliot Place, Fort Greene Place, Portland Avenue, and Oxford Street for the gorgeous tree-lined streets for additional NYC foliage along the historic and beautiful homes.

In the park, make your way up to the centerpiece of the park, the towering Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument which is essentially a giant mausoleum that commemorates over 11,000 American prisoners of war who died in captivity aboard sixteen British prison ships during the American Revolutionary War.

The stairs on the one side of the monument and mausoleum offer beautiful views lined with trees that look especially beautiful during autumn when the leaves change.

Pelham Bay Park 

Pelham Bay Park is a municipal park located in the Bronx and another great place to witness NYC foliage in autumn. With over 2,700 acres of land, Pelham Bay Park is the largest park in all of New York City and is more than three times the size of Central Park just to give you an idea of how much land there is to explore here including many of the oldest trees in the city in their woodlands and forest .

One great spot to admire the NYC foliage in Pelham Bay Park is at Hunter Island. Located on the northeast corner of the park near Orchard Beach, this island is accessible by nature trail and is the largest continuous oak forest in the entire park!

Even if you don’t make it all the way to Hunter Island, exploring the nature trails throughout Pelham Bay Park will allow you to immerse yourself in all of the fall foliage that this popular spot has to offer. 

Stroll Through Tree-Lined Neighborhoods 

Some of the best fall colors of New York can be found in the picturesque tree-lined neighborhoods of the city with historic homes from brownstones to rowhouses and even neighborhoods full of mansions!

One of the best tree-lined neighborhoods in Brooklyn is Victorian Flatbush . Known for its Victorian mansions in an array of architectural styles from Queen Anne, English Tudor, Swiss Chalet, to even a beautiful Japanese Pagoda-style mansion.

Take a stroll in autumn and you’re rewarded with the hues of autumn when the leaves change. 

Some of the best tree-lined streets to admire this type of fall foliage include Westminster Road, Albemarle Road, and Rugby Road. However, it’s best to give yourself at least an hour to explore Victorian Flatbush, as you will want to walk up and down all the streets. Once you’re there, there’s a good chance you’ll keep on stumbling across more fall foliage and pretty tree-lined streets, then you can head towards Prospect Park for more leaf peeping.

For Brooklyn, you can also doing some great fall leaf peeping through the historic homes and tree-lined streets of Park Slope . We are biased as we used to live here, but this is one of the most gorgeous neighborhoods in the country, not to mention there are tons of dining and shopping options too among the sea of brownstone homes and flickering gas lanterns and jaw-dropping stoops.

Head to the historic blocks, which are indicated with the brown-colored street signs close to Prospect Park. 

Cobble Hill is another relaxed neighborhood in Brooklyn that’s known for its brownstones and single-family homes that lie on the tree-lined streets. In fact, according to a study done by Localize, Cobble Hill has the most trees out of any neighborhood in New York City!

You can expect to see beautiful fall foliage on any residential road in this area and check out Cobble Hill Park, one of the most quaint and picturesque parks in the city lined with beautiful homes and of course fall foliage!

Over in Manhattan, you can explore the West Village, one of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in Lower Manhattan that’s known for its cobblestone streets, landmarked brownstones, Federal-style townhouses, and the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Some of the best places to for views in the West Village include Morton Street, Grove Street, and Charles Street. Be sure to peek into the courtyards for the fall colors and take a stroll over to Washington Square Park for more fall foliage plus be sure to catch a view of the Empire State Building through the arch here.

All of the neighborhoods that line Central Park have beautiful homes and trees that line the park and some even in the streets. You can’t really go wrong with the Upper West Side or Upper East Side.

The Upper West Side is a neighborhood known for its large brownstones and quiet tree-lined streets. Some of the prettiest streets to walk along in the Upper West Side are 74th, 81st, and 87th!

Governors Island

One of my absolute favorite places to go to in NYC for fall foliage (and anytime of year) is Governors Island in the New York Harbor. This easy day trip from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn (using the Governors Island Ferry or NY Ferry) you can take a scenic walk, bike ride, or picnic around the former military base turned public park.

The island used to close for the season at the end of October, which meant that up until it opened year-round most people missed seeing the changing of the leaves and fall foliage in this NYC spot. 

Walk through the tree lined streets where the homes of the former high ranking officers lived (which are now mostly artist residencies and art installations), hike up to the viewpoint for sweeping views of the Statue of Liberty and city skyline, or enjoy the fall foliage from the outdoor heated pools at the QCNY Spa.

So pack your car and take a trip to beautiful Upstate New York. Start with the the Adirondacks, which has plenty of great villages including Lake George and Lake Placid. With its many lodging options , restaurants , popular fall events , and breathtaking scenery, the Adirondacks will surely rejuvenate and inspire!

Peak times for an Upstate New York fall foliage tour generally occur between the last week in September and the third week in October, but there are many factors that contribute to the specific peak dates each year. Start making plans and experience Mother Nature once again as she explodes with awe-inspiring beauty this fall!

Take in the fall foliage on NY Waterway’s ‘Shades of Autumn’ tours

NEW YORK (PIX11) — We’re just a month shy of peak foliage season in New York City, where autumnal colors will adorn the city.

For those looking to take in the sights along the Hudson River, NY Waterway’s ‘Shades of Autumn’ Fall Foliage Tours kicks off this weekend.

The tours will begin on Saturday, Oct. 7and will run through Nov. 5 on Saturdays and Sundays. Riders can choose between a four-hour tour or a two-hour tour. Attendees can also enjoy hot cider, coffee, tea, soft drinks, cocktails, donuts, sandwiches, and wraps while an experienced tour guide points out historical sites and local folklore along the route.

It is strongly advised that riders dress in weather-appropriate clothing and arrive 30 minutes before departure for boarding and seating.

Here is a full list of the departure locations and schedules:

• 4-hour tours leaving from Midtown/West 39 th  Street depart at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays
• 4-hour tours leaving from Port Imperial/Weehawken depart at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays
• 2-hour tours leaving from Midtown/West 39 th  Street depart at 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays
• 2-hour tours leaving from Port Imperial/Weehawken depart at 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays

Tickets for the four-hour tour are $90 for adults and $55 for children (ages 4 – 12). Tickets for the two-hour tour are $70 for adults and $45 for children. Kids under the age of 4 ride free.
