For as much as Florida can get maligned, those of us who live here know all the good that comes from living among people from all over the world, outstanding natural beauty, and the very best beaches in the country .

Florida is never static. It’s always reinventing itself with developments such as the September 2023 debut of the Brightline high-speed passenger train service that runs between Orlando International Airport and Miami (with stops in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Aventura along the way)—making it easier to cover some serious ground in the state.

Whether you come to explore the buzzy new downtown district in Tampa, dig into an underrated food city, or kick back on a beautiful beach, here are the places with the biggest news as of late.

Which Florida city should I be most excited about right now?

The Tampa Bay region has a population of about 3 million people.

The urban buzz in Florida has been all about Tampa, which has stepped into the spotlight after a long while of being overshadowed by Miami and Orlando. Recent growth has centered around a new downtown district, Water Street Tampa , with The Tampa Edition and JW Marriott Tampa Water Street (check out the city’s newest and highest rooftop bar, Beacon , on the 27th floor) as its cornerstone hotels. New restaurants there include French favorite Boulon Brasserie and gastropub and oyster room The Pearl . Local foodies are eyeing the opening of Ash in Water Street Tampa this spring—a new Italian concept by lauded chef Ferrell Alvarez of celebrated Seminole Heights restaurant Rooster & The Till .

Just south of downtown, the residential neighborhood of Hyde Park has seen some openings, too. Florida’s only Palisociety property, the Palihouse Hyde Park Village , and Japanese restaurant Ro opened in Fall 2023.

There’s so much to love about this Gulf of Mexico beach town with powdery beaches and no chain establishments in sight. Less than an hour from Tampa along the Gulf of Mexico, Mello on the Beach opened in 2023 along a stretch of white sand in Holmes Beach, just south of Anna Maria Island. The decor is retro, bright, and cheerful, conjuring a bit of Palm Springs in Florida with neon pool floats, color-pop furnishings, and extras like umbrellas, coolers, and lounge chairs that make an off-grid beach day easy.

To the south in the tiny gulf-front town of Naples, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples reopened last summer after an extensive revamp that included a 14-floor expansion of the Vanderbilt Tower for Club guests (it has the brand’s largest Club Lounge in North America), a new dramatic lobby bar, and 10 new air-conditioned private poolside bungalows for when you need a break from the beach but aren’t quite ready to retreat to your room.

Amelia Island

Just north of Jacksonville on Florida’s Atlantic coast, Amelia Island is ideal for exploring by bike, particularly around the historic town of Fernandina Beach and nearby Fort Clinch State Park, with miles of pristine beachfront. Fronting a 13-mile stretch of quiet beach, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island offers naturalist-guided ecology field trips to discover the surrounding barrier island environments, and it plans to unveil a revamped spa in late spring this year.

Miami restaurants claim most of Florida’s Michelin stars (it has 11 Michelin-starred restaurants), but Orlando is the Sunshine State’s biggest sleeper when it comes to food: It has a globally inspired dining scene that runs the gamut from high-end restaurants to holes-in-the-wall yet manages to stay largely unfussy. And if Asian food is your favorite, Orlando particularly delivers.

The city’s Mills 50 District is full of exciting Vietnamese (roughly 17,000 Vietnamese Americans live in Central Florida ) and Southeast Asian options, from mainstays Pho 88 and Little Saigon to Laotian street food spot Sticky Rice and Filipino ice creamery Sampaguita , a newcomer in 2023.

Omakase is also having a big moment in Orlando. Visit restaurants like 10-seater Soseki , Kadence , newcomer Natsu Omakase, and the more casual Susuru Juju, which rolls out sashimi and nigiri delights (many made from fish freshly flown in from Tokyo’s Toyosu market).

Orlando’s most newsworthy resort opening of late is Evermore Orlando Resort , where the Conrad Orlando has nearly 500 rooms and suites, a kids club, a rooftop Mexican restaurant, and private beach access to the complex’s enormous eight-acre man-made lagoon. Houses, flats, and villas for rent at Evermore Orlando range from four to eleven (!) bedrooms, offering everything required for a multigenerational gathering.

Florida’s crystal-clear freshwater springs in places like Crystal River—where manatees gather by the hundreds to warm up from the chilly Gulf of Mexico waters during the winter months—are fairly well known. But the state’s sandy-bottom lakes (read: less likely to harbor alligators than mucky ones, although the creatures can be found in any freshwater environment in Florida) in and around towns like Lake Placid, about two hours south of Orlando in the center of the state, often surprise visitors. Here, the Lake Placid farmers’ market takes over Journal Plaza every Saturday, Morty & Edna’s Craft Kitchen does a mean shrimp-and-grits weekend special, and you can spend the day pontooning and tubing on pretty little Lake June with Lake June Pontoons .

About 20 minutes north of Lake Placid, Sebring is home to a burgeoning restaurant scene spearheaded by spots such as Faded Bistro & Beer Garden. But it also has one of Florida’s most spectacular state parks, Highlands Hammock State Park , which boasts a three-mile bike loop, tunneling oak trees, and an elevated boardwalk through an old-growth cypress swamp. For serious airboat thrills on Lake Istokpoga in Sebring (one that is loaded with alligators and is decidedly not for swimming), head out with Airboat Wildlife Adventures from Neibert’s Fishing Resort, and make sure Captain John knows you want to the “roller-coaster version” for the biggest adrenaline rush.

You don’t have to go to cities like Miami, Daytona Beach and Tampa to get the most out of Florida. There are a lot of smaller seaside towns in The Sunshine State where you don’t have to deal with expensive accommodations, heavy traffic or throngs of people. Below is a list of modest seaside towns that deserve your consideration.

Apalachicola

Located in northwest Florida along the Gulf of Mexico, Apalachicola started out as a colonial trading post called Cottonton. Miles of beaches, shallow bays and freshwater rivers make it apparent why traders chose this location to set up shop.

Today, those bodies of water are enjoyed by tourists and residents alike, while Apalachicola’s Historic District includes many old homes, museums and theaters.

“If you want a laid-back, relaxed lifestyle, with an old Florida historic feel, it’s the perfect place,” says John Solomon, executive director at the Apalachicola Chamber of Commerce.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands

Recently named as a top ten vacation spot for families with toddlers by Trip Advisor’s Flipkey, Captiva Island and its sister island Sanibel are located in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Southwest Florida. In addition to beaches perfect for building sandcastles and chasing waves, the islands are also home to the Sanibel Sea School, which hosts fun educational programs on its main campus and in various resorts.

Santa Rosa Beach

Tarpon Springs

Known as the “Sponge Capital of the World”, Tarpon Beach gained its reputation from the Greek sponge divers that immigrated to the area in the early 20 th century. The region still has a strong Greek cultural influence that can be seen in the food and architecture.

“I tell people I live in ‘Greek Mayberry’,” says Jack Spirk, a staff member with the Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a lovely town and it’s very much into preservation. It’s not overbuilt; there’s no high-rise buildings.”

The town hosts many regular street events with music and food vendors, some of which are Greek-themed.

The white sand beaches in Destin may be more common in the southern part of the state, but they are somewhat rare in the Florida Panhandle, where the city is located.

If you’re looking for more than seaside frolicking, Destin also has four championship golf courses, pirate-themed cruises and a massive water park.

St. Augustine

With a 17 th century fort, Gilded Age hotel, alligator farm, historic Old City, Pirate and Treasure Museum, World Golf Hall of Fame, gourmet restaurants and local distillery, it’s hard to imagine how visitors to this city on the Northeast Florida city ever make it to the beach.

While St. Augustine isn’t completely off tourists’ radar, it’s still an underrated Florida destination spot compared to other tourist magnets like Miami and Orlando.

Encircled by breathtaking stretches of freshwater and saltwater, Fort Myers is located on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. The area’s natural beauty is likely what attracted Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, who both have winter estates in Fort Myers that are preserved and open to the public today.

The seaside town also an interactive science museum called The Imaginarium and The Seminole Gulf Railway, which provides riders with a charming trip through countryside.

“Activities do go on, but it’s very quiet and relaxing,” says Beautiful Edden of the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce. Edden added that free parking near the beaches and the lack of crowds also appeal to many Vero Beach Visitors.

Visitors to Vero Beach can also enjoy a hotel made from driftwood, an aquarium, art galleries and the region’s only professional ballet company.

If relaxing while surrounded by nature’s beauty sounds like your ideal Florida experience, you probably can’t do much better than the small clutch of Gulf Coast islands known as Cedar Key. Vacationers can rent traditional wooden stilt houses and take guided kayak tours.

Deerfield Beach

Old-school, but with modern amenities, Deerfield Beach offers the best of both worlds. Every Sunday, a farmer’s market takes over the Cove Shopping Center, so you can get fresh produce to go with the fish you catch off the 976-foot-long fishing pier. The Royal Blues Hotel , which opened in 2014, offers contemporary amenities for those who don’t want their visit to get too rustic.

Underrated Budget-Friendly Beaches To Visit In Florida

When many picture themselves on an affordable beach vacation, images of Florida's white sandy shores, sparkling turquoise water, and palm-lined streets come to mind. A state known for its warm climate and frequent sunshine, it's not surprising that so many tourists choose Florida as their holiday destination, especially when trying to escape a cold winter. In fact, over 137 million people visited the Sunshine State in 2022 alone. 

Everyone has heard of Florida's beach superstars, the most famous of which is Miami's beautiful and bustling South Beach. But with 825 miles of beaches stretching across the state, there is a vast expanse of fabulous and often underrated beaches just waiting to be explored. The best part? Since they are less appreciated, many of these beaches are budget-friendly spots, not to mention less crowded than their more popular counterparts. 

Florida's most underrated beaches stretch from Pensacola in the northwest to way down south in the mid-Florida Keys. They all boast soft, clean sand and iridescent waves, not to mention a slew of affordable activities like snorkeling, paddleboarding, and fishing. Whether you're looking to surf epic waves in New Smyrna, relax on a secluded beach on Caladesi Island, or expose the kids to endless entertainment in Daytona Beach, this list will help you find the perfect, underrated budget-friendly beach to visit in Florida. 

New Smyrna Beach, New Smyrna

New Smyrna is one of the most underrated beach destinations in Florida. It sits serenely on the Atlantic coast, an hour northeast of Orlando, and is comprised of a whopping 17 miles of soft, sandy beach. It also plays host to sandbars that create ideal swells year-round. Due to this natural phenomenon, New Smyrna has repeatedly been voted one of the world's top surfing destinations, making this a must-visit East Coast beach for surfers . 

Not a surfer? No worries. This beach isn't just an epic place to paddle out. There are plenty of other fun things to do, including people-watching on the boardwalk, body boarding, and cruising your 4x4 on the sand. Beach driving is permitted between 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. between May 1 and October 31 and between sunrise and sunset from November 1 through April 30.

If you're hoping to bring your favorite furry family member, head to the north side of the jetty. The dog beach is located in Smyrna Dunes Park. While New Smyrna is a world-class beach, a word of warning: It has been named the most dangerous for swimming in the U.S . due to a number of shark attacks that have occurred in the area. That said, you're more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than you are by a shark.

Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe

If you haven't heard of Cape San Blas, you're not alone and that's not a bad thing. This underrated Florida beach is tucked offshore between Saint Joseph Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, a mere 48 miles south of Panama City. A hidden gem on the Panhandle, its slightly out-of-the-way locale makes this a relaxing escape for Florida beachgoers. Often referred to as a "forgotten" beach, this is an ideal place to visit for a romantic holiday. What's more amorous than lounging on a quiet beach in the middle of nowhere surrounded by water? 

Cape San Blas is home to T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park , where you'll find 20 miles of sand peppered with tall dunes on the Gulf side and edged by marshland on the Saint Joseph Bay side. Whether you're hoping to stroll hand-in-hand along the beach, kayak through the waves, or snorkel offshore, you'll find enough activities to stay busy. The park is also home to a campground with 14 primitive campsites but be warned, this is a become-one-with-nature, rustic kind of camping. In other words, there are no facilities. If you're hoping for something a bit more glam, or at least a room with air conditioning and a toilet, try one of the park's eight vacation cabins.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin

Caldesi Island State Park is yet another Gulf Coast beauty you'll never want to leave. Set on a barrier island just west of Dunedin and under three miles from one of America's best beaches , Clearwater Beach (more on that later), it's easy to reach this serene spot — as long as you travel by boat, that is. Those who don't have a private boat at their disposal can book a ferry ride ($16 per adult and $9 per child aged 6 to 12) from Honeymoon Island State Park. Visitors are allowed to stay on the island for four hours, but there are no facilities on site, so pack accordingly (extra sunblock, water, and snacks are a must).

Prepare to be wowed by the endless activities on offer at this best state park. More than three miles of water trails lead kayakers and canoers through lush mangrove tunnels bursting with wildlife. The beach is idyllic and unspoiled. If you're quiet and look hard enough, you may even spot a gopher tortoise. They like to burrow behind the sand dunes.

Despite being tranquil and remote, Caladesi Island State Park offers all the amenities and activities tourists might look for in a Florida beach vacation. There are showers, restrooms, change rooms, concessions, picnic tables, and even a playground here. There's also a historic homestead on the island, which can be reached by following the nature trail.

Fort Myers Beach, Fort Myers

Despite being named after a Gulf Coast city, Fort Myers beach lies on a barrier isle named Estero Island, over 15 miles south of downtown. A tranquil place for a day trip, this beach spans over seven miles of the island, offering up plenty of space to lounge, build sandcastles, practice body boarding, or swim in the azure waves of the Gulf of Mexico. Kayaking, windsurfing, beachcombing, and fishing are also popular things to do. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, like the aptly named  Eats at the Beach  that offers affordable take-out meals you can enjoy on the sand. Parking can be found throughout the area and costs $5 an hour.

Sadly, Fort Myers Beach sustained damage from Hurricane Ian in September of 2022. While tourists should expect to find some of the 29 beach access points under repair, the beach is open and primed for visitors. Those hoping to watch the sunset or fish from the Fort Myers Beach Pier, however, will have to wait (possibly for years) as it was almost completely destroyed by the storm.

Pensacola Beach, Pensacola

While not exactly an unknown beach, this Gulf Coast gem is still an underrated, budget-friendly beach to visit in Florida. And it's so lovely that you'll want to spend days lounging upon its sugar-white sand. Pensacola Beach is actually a collection of beaches that span 18 miles of coastline. They are hugged by the type of water you'd expect to find in more tropical destinations like the Caribbean — crystal clear and turquoise, the Gulf is extra inviting at this pretty locale. Located near the western tip of the barrier island of Santa Rosa, the beaches are easily reached by crossing the bridge from nearby Pensacola. 

Although Pensacola Beach and its sandy shores tend to fly under the tourist radar, this is a fun and entertaining place to visit with the family. It is filled with exciting things to do. You can fish off Fort Pickens Fishing Pier, head out on a boat cruise, or play all day in the Adventure Park at Laguna's Beach Bar and Grill . 

Bringing your four-legged family member? Fantastic! They're welcome to spend time in two designated dog areas on this vast beach. You'll find these at lot 21E and lot 28B. Another perk of hanging out at Pensacola Beach is the free, open-air trolley that runs from 4 p.m. to midnight between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 

Sombrero Beach, Marathon

Sombrero Beach is an ideal place to visit for families and couples looking for an affordable Florida beach vacation. A secret closely guarded by locals, this secluded spot lies in the middle of the Florida Keys, almost equidistant from Key West and Islamorada. With fewer crowds than more popular beaches in Florida, travelers are welcome to enjoy a game of beach volleyball, hike to the Sombrero Key Lighthouse, or nap in the shade of a palm tree during their visit. Speaking of shade, there's plenty of it at this Atlantic Coast beach, which is a definite plus on super hot days. Once free to enjoy, parking now costs $5 an hour for the first two hours and $2 an hour after that. That's still pretty budget-friendly for a day at the beach. 

If visiting between April and October, be warned that certain areas of the beach may be temporarily off-limits. This is turtle nesting season, and the threatened sea creatures often lay their eggs here at night. Don't worry, the clearly marked nesting areas typically encompass less than 10% of the beach.

Melbourne Beach, Melbourne

An easy day trip from Orlando, Melbourne Beach lies on the Space Coast, just 75 miles southeast of the theme park haven. It's not an exaggeration to describe this immaculate beach as "breathtaking." Melbourne Beach features picture-perfect, turquoise waters that caress its white sands. The beach is popular among both families and watersports enthusiasts, and you'll find plenty of snorkelers, paddleboarders, kayakers, and anglers taking advantage of this dreamy stretch of coast. However, the beach rarely feels crowded.

Being an underrated beach means you won't have to elbow your way through crowds to pitch your beach umbrella, which makes this a very relaxing place to visit. If you're hoping to stay active, book a boat cruise, take a surfing lesson, or head out on a guided kayak tour. You can also help ensure a budget-friendly trip by staying at one of Melbourne's charming B&Bs or skipping the beachfront rental to stay near Melbourne's historic downtown area. 

Cocoa Beach, Cocoa Beach

If traffic cooperates, it will take less than half an hour to drive south from the exciting attractions at Kennedy Space Center to blissful — and affordable — Cocoa Beach. While not exactly an under-the-radar destination, the beach is a fantastic place to visit. From swimming to parasailing to flyboarding and kiteboarding, there's literally something for everyone. 

However, learning to surf is one of the best things to do in Cocoa Beach. Nicknamed the "Surf Capital of the East Coast," there are multiple surf schools to choose from. At the original  Ron Jon Surf Shop , instructors will teach you to surf while selling (and renting) all the gear you'll need. You'll also be learning on the same waves as surfing legend Kelly Slater, who grew up in the area. Beyond surfing, Cocoa Beach is still a fun place to visit and one of the most budget-friendly beach towns on the East Coast.

Sunset Beach, Tarpon Springs

While there are quite a few beaches in Tarpon Springs, Sunset Beach is one of the most amorous locales. Less crowded than the more populated Howard Park Beach, this serene spot boasts impressive views from its west-facing, Gulf Coast position. Unsurprisingly, watching the sunset is one of the most popular things to do on this romantic stretch of sand. Pack a picnic, bring your loved one, and settle in for Mother Nature's wonderful display. A backdrop of waves lapping the shore only serves to enhance the romance. If you really want to make a good impression, time your visit for one of the free monthly concerts, which typically coincide with full moons.

Tarpon Springs has been dubbed one of the most affordable Florida beach towns, which means you can save by staying and dining locally while visiting their stunning beach. The town also boasts a high Greek population, so you know the food is going to be divine. In addition, the area is known as the "Sponge Capital of the World," and you can find some pretty interesting sponges for sale, not to mention unique opportunities to head out on a sponge diving expedition with St. Nicholas Boat Line . 

Panama City Beach, Panama City

When you think of Panama City Beach, you may think of spring breakers chanting "PCB" with ensuing collegiate-level chaos. However, there's a lot to love about Panama City Beach, including 27 miles of clean, soft sand nestled against the Gulf of Mexico, and there's a wide variety of beaches to enjoy. Families visiting  Camp Helen State Park will be especially happy at this tranquil spot. Surrounded by water, the park features the calm beaches of the Gulf and the placid freshwaters of Lake Powell, which is Florida's largest coastal dune lake. There are no lifeguards on hand, though, so be extra vigilant. At $4 per vehicle or $2 per pedestrian or cyclist, this is a cheap beach to visit.

St. Andrews State Park is also home to a fabulous, mile-and-a-half-long beach that lies between two large bodies of water — the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrews Bay. Popular activities include snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, swimming, and hiking along the dunes. There's a campsite on the grounds for those who'd like to spend a night or two under the stars. Pitch a tent or better yet, reserve a night of glamping in an eco-tent. These include a queen-sized bed, fan, water views, and a twin-sized cot.

Another spring break destination, Daytona Beach has gotten a bad rap. As a result, this beach has become underrated over the years. This is actually a good thing for tourists looking for an enjoyable seaside break outside of that crazy season. Packed with fun, and cheap, things to do, this is a budget-friendly beach to visit in Florida for families. Kids will appreciate the amusement park (a.k.a. Screamer's Park), as well as the ice cream parlors and pizza joints that line the Daytona Beach Boardwalk. 

There's also enough sand available, so even when the strand is somewhat busy, the beach doesn't seem overrun. Considering the beach sprawls across 23 miles on a barrier island sandwiched between the Halifax River and the Atlantic Ocean, there is no lack of water-based excitement to be had. After a day of paddleboarding, body surfing, or fishing from the pier, the area also offers over 60 miles of hiking and biking trails to explore inland. 

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fort Lauderdale

Where Fort Lauderdale is bustling and loud, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is lowkey and adorable. Less than eight miles north of Fort Lauderdale, this less sought-after beach area is more than worthy of a visit. Anglin's Square is the most colorful entrance to the beach, flanked by restaurants like TacoCraft Taqueria & Tequila Bar and 4D Gelateria . Unfortunately, the historic Anglin's Pier was damaged by hurricanes and is currently closed as of this writing, though efforts are being made to repair and reopen it. 

Walk about five minutes from Anglin's Square north to El Prado Park, and you'll find a quieter section of beach highlighted by bright azure water and a shade-providing Beach Pavilion. The brightly painted Adirondack chairs are an ideal place to sit and people-watch. Once on the sand, stake out a good spot and hit the waves. The beach is a fun place to go swimming, snorkeling, or paddleboarding away from the larger crowds south. 

Clearwater Beach, Clearwater

Clearwater Beach lies on a barrier island just west of the town of Clearwater on Florida's Gulf Coast. In addition to easy access to the Gulf's warm, emerald water, the beach lies close to multiple affordable hotels and exciting attractions, which include a picturesque fishing pier and the Clearwater Aquarium . Amenities abound at this beautiful Florida beach, making it easy to enjoy a meal of uber-fresh seafood, cool off with a pint, then rent a beach chair and build sandcastles in the clean, soft sand. No wonder this beach has been deemed one of the best beaches in the South.

1. Tavernier

Located in the Florida Keys , between Key Largo and Islamorada, Tavernier is one of most underrated places in the keys! Yet, this cute small town in Florida has a lot to offer!

2. Matlacha

Matlacha (pronounced Mat-la-shay) is one of the most colourful towns in Florida. 

This little fishing town is surrounded by beautiful barrier islands such as Pine Island. It’s a lovely place to spend a few days. It’s a very interesting and unique place with a boho feel. Quite unusual for a fishing town! It’s also a great place for people who want to step back in time. Matlacha has this Old Florida vibe!

• Kayaking: if you like water activities, consider going on a kayaking or stand-up paddling trip. You can either stay around Matlacha or go further in the Mangroves. It’s very pretty and good fun.
• Visiting Leoma Lovegrove Gallery & Gardens: If you love colourful places and art, this is the place for you! Leoma Lovegrove is an artist who created an incredible gallery in Matlacha. It’s very colourful and cool. You can take many beautiful photos there. On some levels, we can think of it as the Wynwood of Matlacha!
• Discovering the Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve.

3. Crystal River

Located a couple of hours north of Tampa , Crystal River is well known for being home to hundreds of manatees between January and March. Winter is the best time of the year to visit Crystal River but regardless of when you decide to come, you will enjoy this cute small town in Florida.

Here are a few things you can do:

• Swimming with the manatees. This is only possible between January and March. I recommend calling the visitor centre beforehand and ask them how many manatees they currently have. • Walking around the 3 sisters spring. This is where the manatees stay. If you are visiting in winter, you will see them from the boardwalk. It’s an easy 30 minutes walk. The water is insanely green/blue and clear. With or without manatees, it’s a cool place to see. Please note that you can’t go swimming from the path. If you want to swim there, you will need to get to the springs by boat or kayak.
• Going kayaking on the river and in the springs.
• Visiting Homosassa Springs and Weeki Wachee. These are two very popular attractions near Crystal River. You can easily go to either (or both) on a day trip. It’s beautiful and very unique.

4. Key Biscayne

Key Biscayne is definitely one of the most unique small towns in Florida. Why? I hear you asking? Well, mainly because of its location. Key Biscayne is located in Miami, between Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

It’s the ideal destination for people who want to stay away from the crowds and enjoy a bit of small-town vibe while still being close to the big city. 

Here are some cool things to do in Key Biscayne:

• Cycling in Virginia Key: the best way to explore Virginia key is by bike. It’s very pleasant and you will discover incredibly beautiful views!
• Exploring Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park: this is one of the most underrated state parks in Florida but that doesn’t mean you will get bored! It’s a paradise for people who love water-based activities. Snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, paddling… you can do it all. Please note that there is an $8 entrance fee per vehicle.
• Cape Florida Lighthouse: this is the oldest structure in Miami. It was built in 1825 and has survived numerous hurricanes since! If you are into history, visiting Cape Florida Lighthouse is a must-do.
• Going for a walk in Crandon Park.

Although it is called “city”, Everglades City is the smallest Florida town in this article! There are only 400 people living there!

This charming fishing town is located in the heart of the Everglades National Park. Delicious food, fascinating history, unique landscapes… it has it all!

A lot of visitors overlook the Everglades during their trip to Florida. This is a mistake you should not be making! The Everglades are absolutely fascinating and if you choose to stay in Everglades city, you will be in for a very authentic experience.

• Visiting Chokoloskee Island. From Everglades City, you can easily drive to the island. There is a bridge. It’s an excellent place to go fishing, kayaking and walking.

• Going on a ranger-led activity in the Everglades. You will find several visitor centres in the Everglades including one in Everglades City and Shark Valley. They offer all sorts of ranger-led activities including guided walks, cycling tours and kayaking tours. 7. Pass-a-Grille

Pass-a-Grille is a small beach town located between St Pete and Fort De Soto.

Located near Tampa, Brooksville is a historic town with beautiful houses and buildings.

10. Apalachicola

Located in Northern Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico, Apalachicola is a small town of 2,400 inhabitants.

11. Palm Beach

You’ve probably heard about Palm Beach. 

Yes, it’s true, the area including Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, and Palm Springs is a major destination. 

It even has its own international airport. But the truth is that Palm Beach is actually the best small town in Florida. 

Situated on the barrier island, its population is fewer than 10,000, but there’s a lot to do and see. Here are a few of them:

• Spend the day on the beach: The beaches are incredible with crystal blue waters and soft sugary sand. 
• Check out Worth Avenue: When it’s time to eat or shop, head to Worth Avenue. Stretching from Lake Worth east to the Atlantic you’ll find places like 
• Step back in time at the Breakers: This historic beachfront hotel has been welcoming guests for nearly 100 years. But you don’t need to be a guest to enjoy all it has to offer like eating at the various restaurants, perusing the shops, getting a spa treatment or just strolling the grounds. 

12. Micanopy 

Located on the north shore of Tuscawilla Lake in Alachua County,  Micanopy is just 12 miles south of Gainesville on US-441. 

It’s home to about 650 people making it one of the smallest Florida towns on the list. 

Known as the “Town that Time Forgot”, Micanopy is a super cool place to visit. 

As if stuck in time, the weathered buildings are a reminder of the town’s prosperous past. Here are a few things to do in Micanopy: 

• Look for bison and wild horses at Paynes Prairie Preserve Park: With more than 23,000 acres to explore, you can hike, bike, camp and see the local wildlife from the park’s observation towers. 
• Learn about the past at the Micanopy Historical Museum and Archives: For a bit of local history, the Micanopy Historical Museum is a great place to start. There are artefacts from all sorts of things like a 1906 wedding dress. 
• Check out the Micanopy Historic Cemetery: For an alternative perspective of Micanopy take a stroll in the historic cemetery. You’ll see graves spanning 180 years, some dating back to 1826.

13. Anna Maria Island

When you combine pristine beaches with a cozy small town feel, it’s absolute paradise (aka: Anna Maria Island).  

You can reach Anna Maria in about an hour by car. Coming from Tampa head south on I-75 then west towards the Gulf of Mexico on US-41 then FL-64. 

Here are some great things to do on Anna Maria Island: 

• Spend the day on the beach: With 7 miles of gorgeous beach, there’s no better place to be. It doesn’t hurt that the beaches are also filled with amazingly soft white sand and turquoise-blue water. 
• Get out on the water: Anna Maria Island has tons of companies that will help get you out on the water. You can do just about anything like go charter fishing, dolphin watching, and even take a tour while paddling a kayak. 

Explore the coast on horseback: If you’ve ever wanted to gallop along the sandy beaches with the waves? Anna Maria Island is the place to do it. More than one company in town will help you get on horseback.

14. Seaside

Seaside is definitely one of the coolest small towns in Florida. Like Matlacha, it’s a very colourful beach town.

It was used as a filming location in the 1998 movie The Truman Show and guess what! The actual town is as surreal as in the movie! Of course, the names of the streets were changed but it is truly a fairytale town!

Looking for some activities? Here you go!

• Take beautiful photos with the pastel-coloured houses. Seaside is what we would call an Instagrammable place. There are many photo opportunities and you will love looking for amazing photo spots. If you want to bring back amazing souvenirs, consider hiring a local photographer.

15. Celebration, FL

If you are visiting the theme parks and want to stay in a smaller town instead of the bustling Orlando and Kissimmee, Celebration FL will be an excellent option.

There are less than 10,000 people living here and it can get a bit busy during spring break but it’s still quite a small town.

It’s very colourful, people are friendly and you will be very close to Disney World and Universal Studios. It was founded by Walt Disney Company which is why it kind of looks like a theme park but they’ve used architectural designs from other historical towns in the US.

Here are some examples of things to do in Celebration, FL: 

• Eating out. Celebration is home to many amazing restaurants. Make sure to book a table somewhere as you will be in for a treat.
• Roaming around downtown. Downtown Celebration is only made of a few streets. It’s easy to explore it on foot and you will find many beautiful buildings.
• Ziplining. If you like outdoor activities, you should consider going on a tree top adventure. Prices here.

All 50 states ranked from worst to best, according to a 45-year-old blogger who has been to each one multiple times

• Travel blogger Lee Abbamonte, 45, has visited all the states in America at least three times. 
• In March, Abbamonte ranked all 50 US states based on his personal preferences.
• He described the states that felt forgettable and the ones he considers can't-miss destinations.

Not everyone can say they've seen almost every inch of the United States. But Lee Abbamonte , a 45-year-old travel blogger, can.

Abbamonte, who formerly worked in finance in NYC, said he was inspired to dedicate his life to travel after many of his coworkers were killed on 9/11.

Since then, he's visited every country in the world, the North and South Poles, and all 50 states . There's an entire group — the All Fifty States Club — dedicated to the feat. Still, it's an achievement relatively few can say they've accomplished.

Even fewer can say they've done what Abbamonte has, which is to visit each state at least 3 times.

The US Travel Association predicted that domestic travel in 2024 will finally exceed 2019 levels after a slow pandemic recovery, with a total of 2.45 billion trips.

Recently, Abbamonte shared his ranking of the US states on Instagram , based on his love of the outdoors, sports, and personal preferences.

Abbamonte said he knows his list is subjective. He has a soft spot for states where he's lived — including New York, California, and Connecticut — and prefers places with a lot of natural beauty.

Here is his ranking of all 50 states from least favorite to favorite, including what Abbamonte considers the highs and lows of each one.

50. North Dakota

North Dakota is at the bottom of Abbamonte's list because he feels that it's the least accessible state, in part because of a lack of direct flights to major cities in other states.

Given his love of diverse topographies, he also doesn't appreciate its flatness.

"It's really spread out," Abbamonte said. "So to drive anywhere, it takes like two or three hours just within your own state."

He is, however, a fan of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located in the state's Badlands.

Abbamonte said Kansas, like North Dakota, is flat and spread out.

Kansas would have ranked higher on his list if the more vibrant Kansas City were located there, he said. But that city is actually located in Missouri.

Abbamonte is a sports fan so, in his view, the state's highlight is the basketball arena on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, which he says is "the best" in the US.

48. Kentucky

According to Abbamonte, you must be a fan of two things to enjoy visiting Kentucky : horses and fishing.

The University of Kentucky found the state was home to over 200,000 equine species as of 2022, including horses, donkeys, and ponies. Meanwhile, the Northern Kentucky Tribune reported that the 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation found millions of locals and tourists spent a total of $11.2 billion fishing, hunting, and wildlife-watching in Kentucky that year.

Abbamonte said that he knows full well that many people enjoy those activities, but he doesn't.

47. Louisiana

Abbamonte said the vibrancy of New Orleans played a role in Louisiana's spot on his ranking.

"If Louisiana didn't have New Orleans, it would be number 50," he said. "But New Orleans elevates it."

He also said Louisiana would have ranked closer to the top of the list if he had made culinary appeal more of a factor in his decisions.

"If it were based on food, Louisiana would be my top 10 — if not top five — because I love Cajun food," Abbamonte said.

46. Nebraska

The best part of Nebraska, in Abbamonte's view, is that the state's largest city, Omaha, is home to the World Series of college baseball.

His least favorite aspect of Nebraska is how unvaried and flat its topography is.

45. Mississippi

For Abbamonte, the highlight of the Magnolia State is the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which lines the Gulf of Mexico.

While he also enjoyed visiting Mississippi's college towns, including Oxford , he said he didn't find the rest of the state particularly vibrant.

"There's really not much going on," he said.

44. Oklahoma

Abbamonte said that even though Oklahoma is low on his list of favorite states, he thinks it could climb the ranks in the future.

"I don't have anything specifically awesome to say about Oklahoma, but I don't have anything specifically bad to say about it either," Abbamonte told Business Insider.

" Oklahoma City and Tulsa are kind of growing cities," he added. In 2023, the state's Department of Commerce said Oklahoma had the "third fastest-growing economy" in the US, naming jobs and population increases as key causes.

"It's kind of an up-and-coming state," Abbamonte said. "I withhold judgment until my next time back — whenever that might be."

Abbamonte said that his favorite part of visiting Iowa was attending the Field of Dreams baseball game there, calling it the coolest sporting event he'll ever attend.

Held once in 2021 and once in 2022, the two regular-season games between Major League Baseball teams took place in a ballpark right next to the Iowa cornfield popularized by the 1989 movie "Field of Dreams." (There was no 2023 game due to construction on the site, a local TV station reported , and 2024's matchup might be set for Alabama.)

"They had the Yankees and the White Sox play a couple of years ago," he said. "I was there and it was just spectacular."

One downside of Iowa, for Abbamonte, was that the state is very flat, with a lot of cornfields.

42. Arkansas

Abbamonte admitted that while he's been to Arkansas' capital, Little Rock, he hasn't yet explored parts of the state that people rave about, including Northwest Arkansas and the Ozark Mountains.

"I don't have much good to say about Arkansas," he said. "Even the capital, it just doesn't do it for me. It's just not a state that I love being in."

41. Alabama

Abbamonte listed three major things he appreciates about Alabama: college football, the Alabama Gulf Coast, and the state's incredible civil rights sites.

He called visiting Selma, Alabama , "a highly emotional experience," and said another highlight was visiting the Rosa Parks museum and memorial in Montgomery.

"It's one of those things that makes you say to yourself, 'I can't believe this happened in my country — and only about 60 years ago,'" Abbamonte said.

However, he said that Alabama, which has previously been the state with the most fast-food restaurants per capita , lacks cities with must-visit restaurants and activities.

"Birmingham and Mobile are two of the biggest cities — and Huntsville ," he said. "They're just not great places."

40. Indiana

Abbamonte said his favorite thing about Indiana was the state's college basketball culture, and his least favorite thing was his experience in Gary, Indiana .

Located on the southernmost shores of Lake Michigan, Gary is known for is steel mills.

"It's just not a nice place," Abbamonte said. "I don't even think anyone who's ever been to Gary, Indiana, would say anything good about it."

39. Missouri

Abbamonte heralded barbecue as the best thing about Missouri.

It's the first thing he eats when visiting the state.

"Both Kansas City and St. Louis have excellent barbecue and they're [quite] different from each other," he told Business Insider.

However, Abbamonte added, St. Louis didn't impress him as a city, and the relatively high crime rates there were a bit of a turn-off.

A 2023 WalletHub report that evaluated 41 indicators of safety from traffic deaths to assaults ranked St. Louis the least safe city in the US.

38. West Virginia

Abbamonte said West Virginia's "beautiful nature" was one of his favorite parts of the state. Another highlight was Greenbrier Resort , a historic luxury hotel in White Sulphur Springs.

However, he said, that getting to West Virginia can be a little tough because there's no major airport in the state.

"It's only regional airports, so you have to connect in cities like DC, Philadelphia, Chicago — wherever it might be — to get in and out," Abbamonte said. "It's not the most accessible place."

Abbamonte said visiting the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton was one of the highlights of his time in Ohio. However, he described the experience in the state overall as slightly more "dull" or "bland" compared to coastal cities he's more familiar with.

"I don't find any of the cities great, like Cincinnati , Columbus, or Cleveland ," he said. "It's just kind of vanilla to me, but that's just from my New York and LA perspective."

36. South Dakota

In Abbamonte's view, Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, and the Badlands are the best parts of visiting South Dakota .

"The bad part about South Dakota is that outside that, there's not much," he said.

35. New Hampshire

Abbamonte said the natural beauty of New Hampshire — including stunning fall foliage and delightful summers — sets it apart.

However, he added, the state's cold winters kept him from ranking it among his favorites.

34. Delaware

"The best thing is Dewey Beach," Abbamonte told Business Insider.

With wide stretches of sand fronting the Atlantic Ocean, Dewey Beach is frequented by partygoers and families alike.

Abbamonte said one downside is the major highway surrounding Delaware's biggest city, Wilmington.

"The worst thing is if you're driving on I-95 for about five miles or so, every cop in the state of Delaware is there giving speeding tickets," Abbamonte said. "It's so annoying."

33. Pennsylvania

"I don't love Philadelphia . I don't love Pittsburgh. I'll say the best thing about Pennsylvania for me is it's the home of the Little League World Series in a place called Williamsport," Abbamonte told Business Insider.

He also said that one thing he noticed about Pennsylvania was a stark lack of "continuity" between the state's cities and rural stretches.

"If you go out to western Pennsylvania, it's completely different than Philadelphia," Abbamonte said.

32. Illinois

Abbamonte called Chicago a "great city" and said Lake Michigan is another great reason to visit Illinois.

But he said he felt that there was not as much going on outside Chicago, making it a less-than-desirable state to visit.

"The Maine coast is one of the best in the country," Abbamonte told Business Insider.

However, he added, once he ventured away from the bustling waterfront, he didn't find as much going on in the middle of the state.

30. Wyoming

The mountain town of Jackson , plus Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks, were among Abbamonte's favorite parts of Wyoming.

However, he said that the least-populated state often felt that way — empty.

"It's just a lot of vast distances — not a lot of people, not a lot going on," said Abbamonte, adding, "The national parks are awesome, and Jackson Hole is one of my favorite places in the country."

While the majority of the state could feel deserted, he said, some national parks — especially Yellowstone — seemed overcrowded.

29. Tennessee

Tennessee's capital, Nashville , and the stunning landscapes of the Smoky Mountains are among Abbamonte's favorite things about Tennessee.

However, he said that some of the state's smaller tourist destinations — including Pigeon Forge, home of Dollywood , and Gatlinburg, with its Las Vegas-style wedding and romance industry — feel a little "cheesy" for his personal tastes.

"These kind of cheeseball touristy towns?" he said. "That's just not my taste. A lot of people would like that."

28. New Jersey

Abbamonte's favorite thing about New Jersey is the Jersey Shore , which has ample beaches, boardwalks, and recreational activities.

But, he said, "the smell in North Jersey along the New Jersey Turnpike" is the worst thing about the state.

27. Wisconsin

Abbamonte said his favorite thing about visiting Wisconsin was the immense amount of state pride that locals expressed.

"People from Wisconsin love them some Wisconsin," he said, especially the cheeseheads, a nickname for fans of the Green Bay Packers football team.

However, Abbamonte said the state's "brutal" winters may be the worst part about living or visiting there.

26. Rhode Island

Rhode Island's coast and islands are among the best parts of the state, Abbamonte said. Another highlight, he added, is the incredible Italian cuisine in Providence, the state capital.

However, he also said the smallest state in the US is a little bit forgettable.

25. Vermont

Abbamonte said the stunning natural landscapes — Lake Champlain, for one — make Vermont a beautiful state to visit in spring, summer, and fall.

However, he added, Vermont's frigid winters are a downside.

Abbamonte wasn't charmed by any of Texas' major cities and especially disliked the traffic in Houston.

But he said he loves Big Bend National Park near the border with Mexico.

23. New Mexico

Abbamonte called New Mexico "an absolutely beautiful state."

"They call it the land of enchantment, and you know, that's kind of like what it is," he said.

Abbamonte said that Roswell , the site of what many consider to be America's first UFO controversy, could feel a little "cheesy with the alien stuff."

22. Georgia

Abbamonte gave points to Georgia for being the site of the iconic Masters golf tournament in Augusta and for the state's beautiful islands, including Sea Island and Tybee Island.

However, he said, he wasn't a huge fan of Atlanta's congestion.

"The traffic in Atlanta is just so enragingly slow and awful," Abbamonte said.

21. Minnesota

Abbamonte called Minnesota "absolutely stunning," adding that Lake Superior is "just spectacular."

"They call it the land of 10,000 lakes . There's a lot of water there, and it's all very beautiful," he said. "The worst thing for me would surely be the winters."

20. Michigan

Abbamonte said his favorite thing about Michigan is the Upper Peninsula, which he called "beautiful."

He wasn't a fan of Detroit, which he said is one of his least favorite cities in the US.

19. Virginia

Northern Virginia — with its wide range of restaurants, shopping, and recreational activities — is a good alternative to Washington DC, Abbamonte said.

The state capital, Richmond, was a Confederate capital, which he felt was part of a darker history that was hard to ignore.

Abbamonte said the best thing about Idaho is Sun Valley , a beautiful ski resort town also known for its annual "summer camp for billionaires." He also loves the state's gorges and the scenery along the Snake River.

However, Abbamonte added, some of Idaho's most beautiful pockets and resorts can be hard to get to.

"It's not the most accessible place unless you're flying private, basically," he said.

17. Maryland

As a graduate of the University of Maryland, Abbamonte said he's a "big fan" of the state. He said that the best thing about Maryland is the local cuisine, primarily blue crabs, and the worst thing about Maryland is the Beltway traffic.

"The Beltway kind of circles Washington DC," he said. "Anyone who lives there or has driven it knows what I'm talking about."

16. South Carolina

Abbamonte said he felt South Carolina and North Carolina were somewhat similar.

In his view, the best thing about South Carolina is its coastline, lined with beach towns. The accessibility of its resorts and golf courses is another plus.

15. Connecticut

Abbamonte, who grew up in Connecticut, said the city of New Haven has the "best pizza in the country."

His only issue with Connecticut is that he recalls it not being the "most exciting" place to spend his childhood. "I couldn't wait to leave," he said, although he said he started to appreciate it more when he got older.

14. Massachusetts

Massachusetts' coastline and its islands, including Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, are its best features, Abbamonte said.

He also said that he can admit that Boston is a "great city" — even though he's spent many years based in its famous rival city, New York.

His least favorite part about Massachusetts is the Boston accent. "Not a fan," he pronounced.

13. Florida

For Abbamonte, the Sunshine State is all about good weather and pretty scenery, especially in the Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Park.

He said he has nothing bad to say about Florida , except that areas that are geographically close to each other can feel very different.

"Florida is almost like a checkerboard," Abbamonte said. "You go a town over, and then it's almost a different world."

12. North Carolina

Abbamonte said his favorite part of North Carolina is the Outer Banks, a series of islands filled with state parks and beautiful beaches fronting the Atlantic Ocean.

He added that he prefers North Carolina's major cities, including Raleigh, Asheville, and Charlotte, to its smaller towns and countryside.

11. New York

Abbamonte, who's lived in New York City for over two decades, has a soft spot for the state, too.

New York state's diversity of landscapes and activities are its main lure, he said.

"It's almost like a mini-California because it really has just about everything," Abbamonte explained. "It doesn't have deserts, but it has mountains and waterfalls and, obviously, a world-class city."

His only issue with New York is that some parts can be expensive.

Alaska's national parks, its glaciers, its fjords, and Denali — the highest peak in North America, formerly called Mount McKinley — are all reasons Abbamonte is such a big fan of the 49th state.

"It's like another world," he said, adding that he also has a soft spot for the state's capital, Juneau.

If he had to pick a downside, he added, it's how dark it is in Alaska six months out of the year.

"But to visit, especially in the summer, it's like a dream," he said.

Montana is similar to Alaska, Abbamonte said, because they both have stunning vistas and many outdoor activities.

Certain parts of western and northern Montana are particularly special, he added. "It might be the most beautiful part of America," he said.

His least favorite aspect about the state is how "isolating" it can feel because it's not as densely populated as other parts of the US.

8. Washington

Abbamonte said Seattle is the "most beautiful city, surely in America and maybe anywhere." In the summer, he added, Mount Rainier can be visible from the city, which is "a stunner."

Besides Seattle, Abbamonte loves how Washington state reminds him of Canada. "You feel like you're in Canada, but you're in America," he said.

How often it rains is the only downside of the state, in Abbamonte's view.

"The Oregon coast is one of the most underrated beautiful places in America," Abbamonte said.

An avid golfer, he's also a fan of the Bandon Dunes golf club and resort.

His only issue with Oregon, like Washington, is how rainy it can get. "The downfall there is definitely the weather," he said.

Abbamonte placed Nevada so high in his ranking of all 50 US states for one major reason: Lake Tahoe.

"It's just absolutely fantastic" — no matter the season, he said.

When it comes to Las Vegas, he thinks any traveler can find something they'll enjoy. "If you don't like Vegas," he added, "you're the problem — because there's something for everybody in Las Vegas." Just avoid the occasional "unsavory activities and people.""

Abbamonte loves Hawaii so much that he's tried to visit each year since 2004.

"The weather is perfect and there's great hiking, there's great golfing," said Abbamonte, adding that he also enjoys Polynesian culture.

His only issue with Hawaii is its distance from the continental United States. "Even from California, it's a five- to six-hour flight," he said. "It's a hassle to get there."

Arizona is often appreciated for its desert vistas and the Grand Canyon, but Abbamonte said Arizona has even more to offer, including skiing in Flagstaff and some national parks near its border with Mexico.

Abbamonte also said the sunsets are among the best of "anywhere in the US."

His only issue with the state is how hot it can get in the summer, adding "especially Phoenix in the summer, the average temperature can get up into the 120s."

Abbamonte said the best part of Utah is that it is "pure nature." Some of the state's national parks are his favorites in the US, including Zion, Arches, and Canyonlands.

His least favorite aspect of Utah, however, is that it can feel "old-school."

2. Colorado

Abbamonte loves mountains, so it's no surprise that Colorado ranks close to the top of his list.

"Colorado is just all about the mountains. I'm not even a skier, but I like going to ski towns and doing everything else but skiing. I also like going to ski towns in the summer because I love hiking," he said.

The only downside to the state he could think of is the relatively prominent homelessness in Denver.

"That's a problem there, without question," he said.

1. California

Abbamonte moved to Los Angeles three years ago after spending most of his adult life in NYC.

His new home state delights him in myriad ways, he added.

"It has beaches, it has mountains, it has deserts, it has islands, it has great cities, it has good cities," he said, adding there is something for everyone in California — "no matter what you like."

If he had to pick a con, it would be how expensive the state can be.
