What you need to know before visiting Cambodia: health care, currency, and culture

Cambodia is considered one of the friendliest countries in Southeast Asia . Thanks to an unbreakable spirit and infectious optimism, the Khmers have prevailed. No visitor comes away without a measure of admiration and affection for the inhabitants of this enigmatic kingdom.

General health is more of an issue here than in many other parts of Southeast Asia, due to a lack of international-standard medical-treatment facilities, a prevalence of tropical diseases, and poor sanitation. Once you venture into rural areas you are on your own, although most provinces have a reasonable clinic for minor health problems.

Cambodia is generally a very safe country to visit, but occasional crimes and scams do happen so it is best to minimize the risks where possible. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning once again, this guide can help you plan the essentials for your trip.

Cambodia's use of currency can be confusing

Cambodia’s official currency is the riel (4000r = US$1). The US dollar is used as a parallel currency and accepted everywhere, although small change may arrive in riel. Just to confuse matters, in towns bordering Thailand Thai baht (B) is also accepted.

Get yourself a  krama  as soon as you arrive

Purchase a krama , a traditional Cambodian checked scarf, as soon as you arrive – it's a multipurpose travel towel that the locals use in a multitude of ways. The primary use is protection from the sun, dust, and wind, but you can also use it as a quick cover-up sarong-style, to towel yourself down after a dip in the pool, and as a makeshift pillow. Essentially the list is as long as your imagination and it takes up virtually no space in your backpack compared to the multiple equivalent products it dupes.

Pack lightweight gear and casual clothes for Cambodia

Lightweight and loose-fitting clothes are the best plan in Cambodia, including cottons and linens to combat the humidity. Cambodia is not a particularly dressy place unless you're spending time at high-end bars and clubs in  Phnom Penh or Siem Reap , so smart clothes are rarely a necessity. If heading to the upland northeast in November to March, pack a warm top for the cool nights.

What to pack

  • Lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect the sun
  • Comfortable sandals or shoes
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Powerful sunscreen and long-lasting deodorant
  • Earplugs to block out the noise
  • Unlocked mobile phone for use with a Cambodian SIM card (roaming charges are very expensive, it’s worth buying a cheap SIM upon arrival)
  • A light raincoat if traveling in the wet season.

There is some important etiquette to keep in mind

Cambodian people are very gracious hosts, but there are some important spiritual and social conventions to observe.

Always be respectful at a Buddhist site

When visiting temples, cover up to the knees and elbows, and remove shoes and any head covering when entering temple buildings. Sit with your feet tucked behind you to avoid pointing them at Buddha images. It's also good to leave a small donation. Women should never touch a monk or his offering bowl – the Buddhist faith believes it is contrary to a monk's sacred vows to be in close proximity to a woman that isn't a relative.

Use the local greeting when meeting new people

Called the sompiah , the local greeting in Cambodia involves putting your hands together in a prayer-like manner. Use this when introduced to new Khmer friends. When beckoning someone over, always wave towards yourself with the palm down.

A woman is looking at a bracelet that's for sale on a marketstall table

Bargaining is expected in markets and for transportation

It's important to haggle in markets in Cambodia, otherwise, the stallholder may "shave your head" (local vernacular for "rip you off"). Negotiation is also the rule when arranging share taxis, pickups, and local transportation like tuk tuks if ordering in person and not via a ride-hailing app. The Khmers are not ruthless hagglers, so a persuasive smile and a little friendly quibbling are usually enough to get a price that's acceptable to both you and the seller.

It's important to dress modestly

Avoid wearing swimsuits or scant clothing around towns in Cambodia, even in beach destinations. Wear a sarong or krama to cover up.

Tipping is appreciated

Tipping is not essential but is commonplace in establishments catering to tourists such as hotels and restaurants, and it is standard practice to tip tour guides and drivers on organized tours.

Local health care in Cambodia is basic

Do not visit Cambodia without medical insurance. Hospitals are very basic in the provinces and anyone who has a serious injury or illness while in Cambodia may require emergency evacuation to Bangkok. If you fall seriously ill in Cambodia you should head to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, as these are the only places in the country with decent emergency treatment.

Pharmacies in the larger towns are remarkably well stocked and you don’t need a prescription to get your hands on anything from antibiotics to antimalarials.

When it comes to tap water, play it safe and avoid it where possible. Bottled water is widely available in Cambodia and many hotels and guesthouses have refill tanks. Ice is generally fine to use, as it is produced in bottled water factories around the country, a legacy of the French colonial period.

An empty sandy beach at night, lit by the lights from beachside bars.

Elephant rides are not recommended

Though not yet illegal in Cambodia, elephant rides have been repeatedly called out by animal welfare groups as cruel and painful for the animal – some private companies are finally rethinking the practice . Do your research to ensure any animal sanctuary you'd like to visit is ethical and prioritizes the welfare of the inhabitants.

Stay safe in Cambodia with these top tips

The most common crime is bag or mobile-phone snatching, usually perpetrated by thieves on motorcycles. Smartphones are a particular target, so avoid using your phone on the side of the street, especially at night. Walking or riding alone late at night is not ideal, as there have been several incidents of solo women travelers being assaulted in isolated areas, usually after dark.

Most scams are fairly harmless, involving a bit of commission here and there for local drivers. There have been one or two reports of police set-ups in Phnom Penh, involving planted drugs, but these seem very rare and usually involve business owners. Beware the Filipino blackjack scam – don't get involved in any gambling with seemingly friendly folks unless you want to part with plenty of cash.

There is quite a lot of fake medication floating about the region, so only buy prescription drugs from reliable pharmacies or clinics. Be very careful if being offered chemical drugs on the street in Cambodia, as not only are they illegal but may be laced with all sorts of dangerous toxic substances.

Due to the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in some rural areas, it is essential to stick to marked paths. Keep a close eye on small children in rural areas to make sure they don't stray and do not go off road if you're cycling.

Roads have improved massively in recent years, but conditions can vary widely from the dry to the wet season. Although motorcycles are a popular way to get around in Cambodia, do not attempt it if you're not an experienced driver. The tangled traffic in the big towns and cities is no place for a novice.

Run through this pre-departure checklist before you go

  • Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months or you won't be allowed into Cambodia
  • Arrange any recommended inoculations at a travel-health clinic
  • Purchase travel insurance with decent health coverage
  • Double-check to see if you need to arrange a visa before arrival

Cambodia’s relocation of people from UNESCO site raises concerns

Chhem Hay, 37, decided to move to Run Ta Ek village in Siem Reap province, Cambodia, in June 2023. Photo / AP

It’s been more than a year since Yem Srey Pin moved with her family from the village where she was born on Cambodia’s Angkor UNESCO World Heritage site to Run Ta Ek, a dusty new settlement about 25 kilometres away.

A tattered Cambodian flag flaps gently in the scorching midday sun on her corner lot, its depiction of the Angkor Wat temple barely still visible, while her brother scoops water from a clay cistern onto a neighbour’s cow that he tends during the day.

Hers is one of about 5,000 families relocated from the sprawling archaeological site, one of Southeast Asia’s top tourist draws, by Cambodian authorities in an ongoing program that Amnesty International has condemned as a “gross violation of international human rights law.” Another 5,000 families are still due to be moved.

The allegations have drawn strong expressions of concern from UNESCO and a spirited rebuttal from Cambodian authorities, who say they’re doing nothing more than protecting the heritage land from illegal squatters.

Yem Srey Pin’s single-room home, its reused corrugated steel siding perforated by rust and old nail holes, is a far cry better than the makeshift tent she lived in with her husband and five children when they first arrived, which did little to protect from the monsoon rains and blew down in the winds.

And their 600-square-meter (6,500-square-foot) property is significantly bigger than the 90-square-meter (1,000-square-foot) plot they occupied illegally in the village of Khvean on the Angkor site.

But the 35-year-old is also in debt from building the new house. Her husband finds less construction work nearby and his wages are lower, and there are no wild fruits or vegetables she can forage, nor rice paddies where she can collect crabs to sell at her mother’s stand.

“After more than a year here I haven’t been able to save any money and I haven’t earned anything,” she said, as her 12-year-old son rocked her 8-month-old daughter in a hammock in front of a fan to take the edge off midday heat nearing 40 degrees Celsius.

“Living here is just hand to mouth because the income we do have goes to pay for the rice, food and my children’s school.”

The Angkor site is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world, spread across some 400 square kilometres (155 square miles) in northwestern Cambodia. It contains the ruins of Khmer Empire capitals from the 9th to 15th centuries, including the temple of Angkor Wat , featured on several Cambodian banknotes, such as the 2,000 riel note depicting rice farmers working fields around the temple, as well as the country’s flag.

UNESCO calls it one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia , and it is critical to Cambodia’s tourism industry.

When it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1992, it was named a “living heritage site” whose local population observed ancestral traditions and cultural practices that have disappeared elsewhere.

Still, UNESCO at the time noted that Angkor was under “dual pressures” from some 100,000 inhabitants in 112 historic settlements who “constantly try to expand their dwelling areas,” and from encroachment from the nearby town of Siem Reap.

Cambodia’s answer was a plan to entice the 10,000 families illegally squatting in the area to resettle at Run Ta Ek and another site, as well as to encourage some from the 112 historic settlements to relocate as their families grow in size.

“People got married, they had children, so the nu

mber of people were on the rise, including those coming illegally,” said Long Kosal, deputy director general and spokesperson for the Cambodian agency known as APSARA that’s responsible for managing the Angkor site.

“What we did was that we provided an option.”

Cambodia began moving people to Run Ta Ek in 2022, giving those who volunteered to leave their homes in the Angkor area plots of land, a two-month supply of canned food and rice, a tarp and 30 sheets of corrugated metal to use to build a home. Benefits also included a Poor Card, essentially a state welfare program giving them around 310,000 riel (about $130) monthly for 10 years.

In a November report, Amnesty questioned how voluntary the relocations actually were, saying many people they interviewed were threatened or coerced into moving and that the relocations were more “forced evictions in disguise.”

The rights group cited a speech from former Prime Minister Hun Sen in which he said people “must either leave the Angkor site soon and receive some form of compensation or be evicted at a later time and receive nothing.”

Amnesty also noted Hun Sen’s track record, saying that under his long-time rule Cambodian authorities had been responsible for several forced evictions elsewhere that it alleged “constituted gross violations of human rights.” It said Run Ta Ek — with dirt roads, insufficient drainage, poor sanitation and other issues — did not fulfil international obligations under human rights treaties to provide people adequate housing.

That has now changed: Homes with outhouses have been built, roads paved, and sewers installed. Primitive hand pumps made of blue PVC piping provide water, and electricity has been run in.

There’s a school, a health center, a temple; bus routes were added, and a market area was built but is not yet operating, Long Kosal said.

Hun Sen’s successor, his son Hun Manet , travelled to Run Ta Ek in December to meet with residents and highlight infrastructure improvements in an attempt to allay the growing international concerns surrounding Cambodia’s most important tourist site.

He reiterated his father’s contention that if the squatters are not removed, the site risks being delisted by UNESCO — something UNESCO has never threatened.

Amnesty itself concedes life has gotten better for the residents of Run Ta Ek, but maintains there are major concerns.

Families have had to take on heavy debt to build even their basic houses, there is little work to be found, and the village — without any significant tree cover — is swelteringly hot during the day and has little shelter from winds or monsoon rains, said Montse Ferrer, the head of Amnesty’s research team investigating the Angkor Wat resettlements.

“People no longer have income,” she said in an interview in Geneva. “They had a clear source of income at the time — tourism — but also other sources of income linked to the location at Angkor. They are now at least 30 minutes away from the site and can no longer access these sources.”

Following Amnesty’s scathing report, UNESCO moved up the timeline for Cambodia’s submission of its own report on the state of conservation at the Angkor site, specifically asking for the allegations to be addressed.

In that report, submitted to UNESCO in March, Cambodia said it had not violated any international laws with the relocations, saying it was only moving people involved in the “illegal occupation of heritage land” and that in Run Ta Ek many were now property owners for the first time in their lives.

UNESCO said it would not comment on the situation until it has been able to analyze Cambodia’s response, but referred The Associated Press to previous comments from Lazare Eloundou Assomo, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center.

Speaking after Amnesty released its report, he stressed the agency had “always categorically rejected the use of forced evictions as a tool for management of World Heritage listed sites.”

“Since the Cambodian authorities announced their population relocation program in 2022, UNESCO has repeatedly and publicly recalled the importance of full respect for human rights,” he said.

Ferrer said Cambodia’s response avoids addressing many of the issues raised by Amnesty, and that UNESCO — even though it says it has little ability to change national policies — has not yet used the significant leverage it does have.

“They could decide that the site is in danger, which they haven’t. They can advise the World Heritage Committee, which is the ultimate body that can decide to take specific action against the state of Cambodia,” she said. “It can also conduct its own investigation and make public recommendations about what the state can be doing.”

Run Ta Ek resident Chhem Hay decided in June to take the opportunity to move from the village where she’d lived since she was a young teenager to the new settlement, enticed by the prospect of owning her own land, and a larger property than she’d ever had.

Her situation has improved since the austere early days living with her husband and teenage daughter in a tent on a dirt lot surviving on rice and prahok — a fermented fish paste that is an inexpensive staple for many Cambodians — paid for by charity handouts from Buddhist monks.

“I didn’t dare eat anything much,” she said. “I tried to save money to buy bricks and sand.”

She was able to get a bank loan for US$1,000 for the materials for a house, and now lives in a single-room brick structure built by her construction-worker husband and other family.

The income from the government Poor Card is enough for the monthly payments on the high-interest 2-year loan, which will have cost her almost double the principle when it’s paid off. She has four chickens and some newly hatched chicks, though had to kill six others to feed the men building her house.

But the 37-year-old lost her work as a garbage collector in her village, and her husband has to drive in to Siem Reap for construction work, setting out at 5 am to make it on time and spending about a third of his 35,000 riel ($14.60) daily income on gas for his motorbike.

She’s looking forward to the day when the village market is opened, and hopes the government will establish a factory or similar business that will provide jobs.

“I don’t know what will happen at the moment,” she said, standing in her doorway. “I’m just living day by day.”

For residents like Chhem Hay, Cambodia plans to offer vocational training, but does not envision further financial compensation, Long Kosal said.

“Once you have education, once you have a vocational skill, you can find a job easily,” he said. “Where you just remain there waiting for support, then you’re not going to go anywhere. You’re not going to make it.”

Meanwhile, villagers say many have already given up on Run Ta Ek, putting padlocks on their new homes and moving away — presumably back closer to Siem Reap and the Angkor site where it is easier to make a living.

Yem Srey Pin said even though Run Ta Ek has slowly improved since she arrived in February 2023, and her new home will be paid off fairly soon, she’d rather return to her village if it were possible.

But the village of Khvean is already slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, with grass growing through the foundations of houses, all that remains of the former homes. A hair curler, tattered blue playing cards and a trampled baseball cap lying on the ground are among the last vestiges of the lives left behind.

With almost all of the village’s 400 families moving out, aside from a few who work at a neighbouring military facility, Yem Srey Pin says there’s nothing left for her there, even if APSARA would let her return.

“I can’t live in my old village alone,” she said.

SIEM REAP, Cambodia (AP) — A baby monkey struggles and squirms as it tries to escape the man holding it by the neck over a concrete cistern, repeatedly dousing it with water.

In another video clip, a person plays with the genitals of a juvenile male macaque sitting on a limestone block from an ancient temple to get it excited for the camera.

The abuse of monkeys at the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwestern Cambodia is not always so graphic, but authorities say it is a growing problem as people look for new ways to draw online viewers to generate cash.

“The monkey should be living in the wild, where they are supposed to be living, but the monkey nowadays is being treated like a domestic pet,” said Long Kosal, spokesperson for APSARA, the Cambodian office that oversees the Angkor archaeological site .

“They’re making the content to earn money by having the viewers on YouTube, so this is a very big issue for us.”

APSARA has few tools itself to stop the YouTubers from filming in general, but has opened an investigation with the Ministry of Agriculture to collect evidence for legal action against the most serious abusers — who are rarely on camera themselves, Long Kosal said.

“If we can build a case, they will be arrested for sure,” he said. “Any animal abuser will be seriously punished by law in Cambodia.”

YouTube, Facebook and other sites remove the videos with graphic content, but scores of other clips of cute monkeys jumping and playing remain, generating thousands of views and subscribers.

Just making those videos involves very close interaction with the monkeys, however, which authorities and animal-rights activists say creates a host of other problems, both for the macaques and people visiting one of Southeast Asia’s most popular tourist sites .

On a recent day outside Angkor’s famous 12th-century Bayon Temple, at least a dozen YouTubers, all young men, crowded around a small group of long-tailed macaques, pushing in close to get shots of a mother with a baby on her back and tracking her everywhere she moved.

The wild monkeys feasted on bananas tossed to them by YouTubers and drank from plastic bottles of water. One young macaque briefly amused itself with half-eaten neon-green popsicle discarded at the side of the path, before dropping it to move on to a banana.

A blue-shirted APSARA warden looked on but those filming were unfazed, illustrating the main problem: Simply taking video of monkeys is OK, even though feeding them is frowned upon. At the same time, it’s making them dependent upon handouts , and the close interaction with humans means they’re increasingly becoming aggressive toward tourists.

“The tourists carry their food, and they would snatch the food ,” Long Kosal said, flipping through multiple photos on his phone of recent injuries caused by the macaques. “If the tourists resist, they bite and this is very dangerous.”

The search for food from tourists also draws the monkeys from the surrounding jungle in to the ancient sites, where they pull away pieces of the temples and cause other damage, he added.

Tourist Cadi Hutchings made sure to keep her distance from the monkeys, after being warned by her tour guide of the increasing risk of being bitten.

“What they want is your food, but you also need to appreciate that there needs to be a boundary between human intervention in nature,” the 23-year-old from Wales said. “It’s obviously a great thing that so many tourists come because it’s such a lovely place, but at the same time, you have to be careful that with more and more people … the monkeys don’t get too acclimatized.”

Many other tourists, however, stopped to take their own photos and videos — some holding out bananas to draw them closer — before heading to the nearby temple site.

YouTuber Ium Daro, who started filming Angkor monkeys about three months ago, followed a mother and a baby along a dirt path with his iPhone held on a selfie stick to get in close.

The 41-year-old said he hadn’t seen any monkeys physically abused, and that he didn’t see a problem with what he and the others were doing to make a living.

“The monkeys here are friendly,” he said. “After we take their pictures we give them food, so it is like we pay them for them giving us the chance to take their picture.”

As he spoke, a young macaque scrambled up the leg of an onlooker, trying — unsuccessfully — to grab a plastic bottle of water out of his pocket.

One YouTuber said he had started filming monkeys during the COVID-19 pandemic after the numbers of tourists plummeted, making it impossible to earn a living as a tuk-tuk driver.

Daro said he was looking for a way to supplement his income as a rice vendor, and that he’s too new at it to have realized many returns.

Many, like Phut Phu, work as salaried employees of YouTube page operators.

The 24-year-old said he started filming monkeys 2 1/2 years ago when he was looking for a job in the open air to help him deal with a lung problem.

He’s generally at it daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., earning $200 a month — equivalent to a Cambodian minimum-wage job — and said he hoped authorities wouldn’t try and put an end to it.

“I need these monkeys,” he said, holding a Nikon Coolpix camera with an extreme zoom that his employer provided, the same model most of the YouTubers were using.

With the difficulties involved in identifying and catching those responsible for the physical abuse of the monkeys, coupled with the draw of easy money through YouTube videos, Long Kosal said APSARA’s task is a tough one.

“This is the problem for us,” he said. “We need to find solid reasons which we can use against them not to make content by abusing the monkeys.”

For Nick Marx, director of wildlife rescue and care for the Wildlife Alliance — which implements conservation programs across Southeast Asia and is involved in releasing wildlife back into Angkor — the answer is simple, though perhaps equally as elusive.

“The biggest problem is these (videos) are generated to make money,” he said in an interview from Phnom Penh. “If people that don’t like this kind of thing would stop watching them, that would really help solve the problem of abuse.”

Travel Pro Samantha Brown's Favorite Countries She's Ever Visited

I f you love to travel, you're probably familiar with host and speaker Samantha Brown. As a young adult, she dreamed of becoming an actress and studied musical theater in college. During auditions after graduation, she landed her first gig at the Travel Channel with little interest (at least initially) in turning the field into a career.

Well, things quickly changed, and she is now best known for her decades-long presence on television, mainly on the Travel Channel and PBS. Over the years, she has been the voice and face of shows such as Great Vacation Homes, Passport to Europe and Latin America, Green Getaways, and most recently, Places to Love. A household name around the U.S., Brown is famous for digging below the surface of destinations and getting to the heart of what makes a place so special. She doesn't merely show you the top attractions and restaurants but shares the point of view of people who live there and always threads the history of a country into her stories. Millions of viewers turn to her shows and blog every year for advice on everything from  the best solo travel destinations to  staying comfy while flying . But if you're curious about her absolute favorite (and highly recommended) countries, keep reading! At the end, we reveal the top place she's ever visited.

Brown is a big fan of Asia, having explored it for her show Samantha Brown's Asia, and often features the region on her blog. In an interview with  CBS Boston  in 2019, she revealed her top choice on the continent, saying, "If you have the time, go the furthest you can," and stating Cambodia as her favorite Southeast Asian country. She cites two main reasons for her choice; the people and the fantastic cultural sites to visit.

She likens Cambodians to the Irish regarding friendliness and openness to talking to strangers. This isn't always the case abroad, especially if there's a language barrier. However, Brown says that's not a problem in Cambodia, where you'll more often than not be greeted with a smile. Additionally, if you want to enjoy amazing wonders, the country does not disappoint. Home to world-famous Angkor Wat (arrive early to beat crowds), it's a history-lovers dream. However, that's not the only site worth visiting. Don't miss Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm in the jungle, and the Royal Palace. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is another must-visit, to acquaint yourself with the recent history and better understand the country. And while neighboring Thailand and Vietnam might receive all the attention when it comes to beaches, those in Cambodia are just as nice and often less crowded.

During "Passport to Europe's" run on the Travel Channel, Brown had the privilege of extensively exploring Italy. Thus, it's no surprise the country makes her list of favorites. The mouth-watering cuisine is famed across the globe, there are works of art and historical sites you've read about for years, and, of course, the locals are super friendly (a theme in the countries Brown labels as her preferred locations). She loves Rome, Venice, and Florence, but so does everyone else. This is part of the reason her top pick for an Italian destination is none of the above, but rather, Bologna.

In the Emilia-Romagna region, you'll eat well, but without the sky-high prices of the larger cities. Bologna is also slightly off the well-worn tourist trail in Italy and, per Brown , won't have hordes of crowds found in other towns or along the coast. Yet, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty to keep travelers busy. Check out the astounding Gothic Basilica of San Petronio, the Contemporary Art Museum, and the History Museum to better acquaint yourself with the city's past. Additionally, the Abbazia di Santo Stefano is a maze of buildings and different churches that will delight visitors of all ages. And if you notice a high number of Lamborghinis, that's because Bologna is a hub city for the car manufacturer. You can even visit the Lamborghini museum just outside of town!

Similar to the U.S., Canada is a massive country, which means diverse landscapes, activities, and cultures for travelers. That's why it's a top pick for Brown, a well-rounded traveler who appreciates a mix of remote nature reprise and bustling cities with plenty of cultural offers. On her  blog , she chose Montreal as her top cultural city of 2023. The city is full of museums and offerings, such as the Biodôme in Jean Drapeau Parc or the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. However, if you prefer to be out in nature, you can just wander up to Mont Royal, a great outdoor playground in the heart of the city.

Another Canadian province that Brown loves is Newfoundland. A bit more isolated than others, it's a unique place to visit that she says is a combination of Iceland, Ireland, France, Denmark, and Norway, but without any of the crowds, better prices, and fantastic wildlife. Whether you want to relax with a coffee along the beaches of either coast, eat your way through major cities like Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto, or learn about native culture further north, Canada is a great place to do all of the above. As a bonus, a trip to Canada doesn't necessarily require a flight (depending on how far you live from the border or cross-border train line) and can thus  be a more sustainable travel option.

Another destination Brown explored during "Samantha's Browns Asia" airtime, Malaysia is a beautiful country to visit. The Southeast Asian country may not be as flashy or frequented as South Korea or Japan, but that makes it such a great place for a trip. The Perhentian Islands are fabulous if you love to snorkel or laze on the beach, while the Taman Negara National Park houses the lush rainforest and is perfect for hiking and treetop walks. And don't miss Bako National Park, where you'll be able to spot a variety of monkeys.

But Malaysia isn't just for outdoors enthusiasts. In her post on fantastic cultural cities, Brown lists Kular Lumpur as a great multifaceted metropolis. You can shop till you drop at the numerous malls, which also serve as a break from heat and humidity (perhaps the only downside to a trip here, as that's the standard climate throughout the year). The city hosts a blend of many cultures due to its rich history. You'll hear and see various dialects of Malay, Chinese, Tamil, and English on a daily basis. This also means the food is deliciously diverse, from nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk with peanuts, shrimp paste, hard-boiled eggs, and anchovies) to satay (spice meat on a stick) and the rojak salad, as well as many other to-die-for dishes.

Another city that made Brown's list of great cultural urban centers is Budapest. Long a favorite among travelers around the world, the capital of Hungary is bursting with things to do. What she points out is something that many don't realize: Budapest is actually two different cities, "Buda" and "Pest," between which the Danube River runs. Over the years, the two areas grew and blended into the small city we love to visit today. Brown points out that Buda is where many of the most famous landmarks and sites are located, and she recommends at least a day exploring that side.

However, she says to get a true sense of everything Budapest has to offer, travelers need to check out Pest, which is full of great cafes and nightlife. This is also where Brown recommends booking your accommodation. Outside of the capital, other great destinations in Hungary include Lake Balaton (especially in the summer), the Aggtelek Cave, Szentendre (a cute northern town with amazing architecture), and the former Roman stronghold, Pécs.

South Korea

Samantha Brown is a massive advocate of South Korea. She mentions on her blog that "Of all the cultural cities on this list, Seoul has to be one of the most impressive." She explains that her reasoning for this comment is that just a little over half a century ago, the city was essentially in ruins post-Japanese and American occupations. Today, it's an impressive city that stands with the likes of New York, Singapore, and Tokyo. Massive skyscrapers tower above, the transit system and other technology are far more advanced than much of the U.S., and everything runs efficiently.

Hidden among the hustle and bustle are coffee shops that rival those in Melbourne, Seattle, and Bangkok, as well as great little bars and BBQ spots. But remember, Korea isn't just Seoul; in fact, the best place to go during fall (when most tourists flock to Japan) is Naejangsan National Park in the south of the country. If you're looking to relax, head to Busan for its beaches and then continue to Jeju Island.

United States

The U.S. makes Brown's list for its sheer size — many of her favorite destinations in other categories are in her home country. From some of the best beaches in the world to stunning nature and thrilling cities, there's something for everyone. In one episode of Places to Love , Brown explores Big Sky, Montana, during the winter and discovers what a tremendous cold-weather destination the ski town makes. Besides the slopes, you can toboggan, try snowshoeing, or hole up in one of the numerous cafes or eateries.

And she isn't just a fan of nature during the winter, as Brown also enjoys hiking and discovering nature during warmer months. North Carolina is one of her favorite outdoor destinations , as is the stunning North Cascades National Park in Washington State. It's less frequented and a bit wilder than many others; it's even closed during the colder months. Additionally, it is no shock that in a country that loves road trips as much as the U.S., her favorite driving destinations are here. Brown highly recommends the quintessential California road trip and a fall drive through the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. Finally, some Midwestern cities that she surprisingly fell in love with include Madison and Kansas City.

Japan is a place that is much-loved by travelers from all walks of life. So, of course, Samantha Brown is an enthusiast. In the same interview where she refers to Cambodia as her favorite Southeast Asian country, she also says Japan is a favorite international trip. There are the overwhelming (in the best way possible) cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, which could each be standalone trips. The more tropical islands around Okinawa and in the south feel more akin to Bali or Fiji than a modern metropolis, perfect for those who want a bit of relaxation and sun during their adventure.

Visitors are also often surprised by what a great winter destination Japan makes. For skiing, your best bet is Niseko in the north, which is cheaper than most ski towns in the U.S. and Europe. However, if you're not a fan of the slopes, don't fret. You can still enjoy steaming outdoor onsens during the frigid time of the year and catch the adorable snow monkeys in Jigokudani Monkey Park.

"This is a place where ancient landscapes still inspire a modern culture and way of life and where you'll find everything from historic castles to charming towns full of thatched cottages," — says Brown's  blog post on Limerick, County Clare, Ireland. This beautiful part of western Ireland is a great place to visit for a well-rounded vacation. It's where rolling green hills give way to the crashing Atlantic Ocean, and the countryside is dotted with castles.

Textiles and local artisans are also a big thing here, as the knit products are all locally made and the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one. Pottery is also popular throughout the county, much of which is reminiscent of tools and creations from ancient times. Outside Limerick, Brown has a long list of recommended places to visit (and love, per her famous show and tagline). There's Lough Gur, a lake shaped like a horseshoe with megaliths dating back centuries, while the charming Adare Manor is well worth a stop. The castle has amazing afternoon tea and on-site falcons and owls with whom you can try your hand at falconry. The Roadside Tavern makes the perfect stop for a bite along the scenic Wild Atlantic Way, and you can check out the smokehouse, where many menu items for the restaurant are made.

In a  Forbes article from 2024, Brown lists her favorite places to escape winter blues. One island not so far away from the U.S. that made the list? Jamaica! The temperatures remain in the 70s and 80s throughout the year, even between December and February. This is considered the "clear" season in a country that can, surprisingly, have some pretty cloudy days. Winter is also the dry season, which is fantastic if you plan to partake in outdoor activities or just enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

As for what to do on the island, there's no shortage of options. The Blue Mountains in the eastern part of Jamaica, just 8 miles north of Kingston, are great for hiking. If you want to surf, you have numerous beaches to choose from, or you can zipline over the rainforest. If you're a fan of reggae music, you'll be right at home in Jamaica, where it can be heard all day. And don't miss the Bob Marley and Peter Tosh Museums, both located in Kingston.

Vienna is one of Brown's favorite selections for cultural cities for a plethora of reasons. There's so much to do and see, but you could also have a tremendous trip just wandering the city and taking in the eclectic mix of architecture. Since Vienna has served as a capital and outpost for various empires over the centuries, there's an interesting mix of Neo-Gothic, Baroque, and modern buildings, but it all works together to create one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Make sure to catch a Lipizzaner horse show at the Spanish Riding School, browse the Museum Quarter (don't miss the Sigmund Freud Museum), and relax at a typical Viennese cafe.

Outside of the capital, Austria has even more to offer visitors. You can hike or ski in the Alps near the picturesque city of Innsbruck, then take in views of the adorable Hallstatt and other lakes. And if you fell in love with Lipizzaners back in Vienna, make sure to stop by the Piber stud farm in the southeast of the country. If you visit during certain times of the year, you might just be lucky enough to see the foals. Finally, not far from Piber is Graz, a rainbow-colored UNESCO World Heritage city with a perfectly preserved old center.

New Zealand

We've covered so many amazing destinations thus far that it's hard to believe there would be a single favorite on the list. However, Brown recently revealed her all-time favorite country in an interview with Wonderlust . If you're familiar with Brown's work and her preferences for destinations, it often comes down to one thing; diversity. She loves to stroll through big cities with long histories, such as Budapest, Bologna, and Seoul, and take in all the sites. But she is also a nature enthusiast and loves places where she can do outdoor activities.

So, New Zealand makes a lot of sense. Big cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch have everything you'd want in a metropolis: great cafes (the country is known for incredible coffee), museums, art performances, and plenty of friendly people to chat with. However, it's no secret outside of urban centers, New Zealand is a playground for those who love mountains, the ocean, and everything in between. Brown has a long list of recommendations, but highlights include Awaroa on the south island for a fantastic beach, Lake Taupo for water sports, and hiking in Waimangu Volcanic Valley. And don't miss the adorable kiwi birds; you can visit a reserve like the National Kiwi Hatchery in Rainbow Springs or stay the night on Rotoroa Island and go on a kiwi-spotting trek.
