1. Brewery Tour with Three "Kölsch" Tastings

Earning top spot on our list, we love this brewery tour for how authentic it is. Don't expect a formal, structured trip. A bit like a pub crawl, they will take you to the best brewhouses and, just like a local , you'll have to find your own seats and order your Kölsch!

Thanks to our hilarious guide , we learned the quirky ways to ordering and drinking Kölsch in Köln, as well as brewing traditions that make Kölsch a national gem.

Another highlight is the chance to visit both traditional and new breweries . For example, we went to Brauhaus Sion, which has been around for a long time, and also checked out newer places like Früh am Dom.

The pricing is very affordable for a wholesome two-hour guided tour peppered generously with anecdotes and fun facts.

And it isn't solely about indulging in three different varieties of Kölsch beers. It's also  about having front-row seats to Cologne's charming brauhaus traditions and rituals !

For example, are you aware that Kölsch will keep coming to your table until you either cover your glass with a coaster, or find yourself under the table?

Whether you're a laid-back tourist or a passionate beer enthusiast, this tour in Cologne promises an exciting evening for all!

  • Glimpse into Kölsch beer & brewhouse culture unique to the region
  • Drinking Kölsch!
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund
  • Reserve now & pay later: Keep your travel plans flexible
  • Live tour guide available in German, English
  • Limited availability, may be difficult to secure a spot on the tour
  • Does not actually include a tour of the beer-making process, which according to reviewers is a disappointment
  • Peak hours may make it challenging to get a seat at the brewery

2. Guided Brewhouse Walking Tour in Cologne

If you're short on time during your visit to Cologne and have just one evening to explore four of the city's finest Kölsch breweries, all highly recommended by locals , then this tour is tailor-made for you.

You'll get to experience both traditional breweries (that have been around for centuries) and newer breweries . It's a great way to enjoy the history and culture of Cologne while savoring delicious Kölsch beer. Mind you, these pubs brew their own Kölsch beer, and we could taste the difference!

We had some standout moments during the tour, including our visits to Brauerei zur Malzmühle , a charming 150-year-old family brewery with a nostalgic atmosphere. And Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch , set within a historic 1600s beer hall , offering an authentic Brauhaus experience.

However, the true high point at each brewery was learning about the unique drinking customs here. We were captivated by the guide's infectious enthusiasm for Cologne's beer culture , and could see why many locals refuse to drink anything other than Kölsch beer!

"We as a family had a great time! Highly recommend. The 2 hours went by fast. We hung around and had more beers afterwards."

- Robert  ( see more reviews )

Note that there’s only room for 15 participants per group which ensures personalized attention from the guide —an added bonus.

So if you’re headed to Germany soon—or even if you live there—I wholeheartedly recommend the Guided Brewhouse Walking Tour in Cologne!

  • Explore 4 top-rated breweries in Cologne and taste each of their beers!
  • Highly-raved for guides who are well-versed in Cologne history, brewing traditions and Kölsch culture.
  • The tour is available in German, English, Spanish, ensuring that all visitors can fully enjoy the experience.
  • The meeting point is centrally located and easily accessible by public transportation.
  • Limited variety of beer styles, as the tour focuses exclusively on kölsch
  • Potential for overcrowding and difficulty in finding seating at each brewhouse
  • Visiting four breweries within 2 hours may leave less time for each stop, not suited for those who prefer a more relaxed experience

3. Brewery Tour with Beer Tasting and Halven Hahn

For a true blue Kölsch tasting experience , a Halve Hahn is a must! This classic Cologne pub snack consists of a slice of rye bread (usually a Roggenbrötchen) that's topped with Gouda cheese, and seasoned with a onions, butter, mustard, and paprika.

The flavors of cheese and butter complement the crisp taste of Kölsch - making them a popular pairing!

That's why " Brewery Tour with Beer Tasting and Halven Hahn " is third on our list. You'll visit four breweries and taste their fresh Kölsch beer, and sample a traditional Halve Hahn – completing your authentic Kölsch tasting tour !

But what really entertained us most on this tour was our guide, a cheeky and funny fellow . He delighted all of us with captivating tales about the breweries, Cologne lifestyle, and amusing anecdotes about the different "versions" of Kölsch. Time really flew by thanks to him!

And the price for this is a steal . Unlike many brewery tours that require you to pay for your own food and drinks, your tour price includes the cost of all four glasses of Kölsch and Halven Hahn. Super value for money!

"Harry led us through the old town with wit and charm and inspired us with all sorts of insider knowledge about Cologne's Kölsch culture. We couldn't have spent our afternoon better. Thank you!"

- Aylin  ( see more reviews )

  • Visit 4 different breweries
  • Tour price includes 1 Kölsch (or soft drink) per brewery
  • Learn interesting anecdotes about Cologne's history in a lighthearted and humorous manner
  • Indulge in the delicious traditional "Halve Hahn" sandwich at one of the breweries
  • Tour is only available in German.
  • Limited availability of tour dates and times

4. Guided Walking Tour to 3 Old Town Breweries

If you want to combine a brewery tour with an exploration of the city , look no further. This combined city tour takes you around Cologne's picturesque Old Town, while indulging in the famous Kölsch beer at three traditional breweries.

If you're lucky, you'll get our tour guide Markus! He's not only entertaining but also incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Cologne.

Thanks to him, our tour of the city and its breweries became an unforgettable experience. It was clear the brewery owners were familiar with him, and they gave us a warm welcome.

"Very good, a great, competent, funny tour guide Markus. A lot of interesting things given for the best!!!!! Would book him again, I can only recommend."

- Ute  ( see more reviews )

For the price, I'd say this is one of the most value-for-money options . The tour price includes the cost of the tour guide plus three glasses of Kölsch beer - super affordable if you consider that most brewery tours require you to pay for your own beer.

Note that party goers are not allowed ; ensuring a peaceful atmosphere where every participant can truly enjoy their time on this guided walking tour .

Not surprisingly, this is a highly popular option (rated 4.9/5 stars) and often sold out . So book early - free cancellation is available up to 24 hours ahead!

5. Belgian Quarter and Kiosk Tour with 2 Kölsch

Germans have a deep affection for their kiosks, affectionately known as 'Büdchen', which are small, neighborhood convenience stores that have become cultural treasures. And there are several located in the quirky Belgian Quarter, which is where this eclectic tour takes place.

This enclave is known for its vibrant street art , fashion stores, vintage shops, and quirky stores selling everything from antiques to vinyl records.

Throughout our two-hour guided walking tour, we stopped at a few iconic Büdchen corner kiosks. As we savored traditional Kölsch beer, our guide described the the importance of these unassuming kiosks to everyday German life.

We also saw the iconic 13th century Hahnentor, wandered into shops along Brüsseler Platz, and admired the street art on Aachener Street. Unlike some city tours, we didn't feel rushed during the tour, and had sufficient time for photos and chatting with our guide and locals.

Overall, if you're looking for an alternative tour that combines art, culture, Kölsch beer, and community, this is the one for you!

  • Off-beat guided tour of Cologne's Belgian Quarter is something different from the usual tours
  • Experience the joy of 'kiosk hopping' and discovering the subtle differences in their offerings.

6. Old Town Walking Tour with Brewery and Kölsch Beer

On this tour , participants enjoy up to four free shots , and complimentary admission to some of the most popular bars and pubs in Cologne.

In fact, you're guaranteed a night filled with fun, dancing, and delightful company!

What to Expect on a Brewery Tour

Beer tasting.

On a brewery tour, you'll get the opportunity to participate in beer tasting, an experience that will take your appreciation for this beverage to another level.

You can savor varied samples of Kölsch beers, each having its distinct character and flavor profile.

There's even a chance to try all three beer samples on one tour! Here at the Brewery Tour with Three "Kölsch" Tastings, beer tastings are conducted professionally with each sip delivering loads of information about the city's rich beer brewing history.

You might discover unusual flavors you love or learn how subtle changes in ingredients or brewing process can dramatically alter a brew’s taste.

My personal favorite is the Guided Brewhouse Walking Tour in Cologne - it offers an exceptional blend of tasting and learning experiences that leave no stone unturned for any craft-beer enthusiasts visiting Cologne!

Brewery history and process

Cologne proudly boasts a brewing heritage that dates back centuries. The city had a thriving brewery scene as early as the 1300s, with at least six monastery breweries in operation. [ 1 ]

Fast forward to 1396 and we see the Guild of Brewers shaping up, standing as the oldest trade organization in this vibrant city. [ 2 ]

Your guide will shed light on how Kölsch brewing techniques vary from one brewery to another within the city. Each brewer may have their own twist on tradition, resulting in subtle differences in flavor and character.

You'll learn what makes Kölsch distinct in the world of beer - from the unique process of how this beer is crafted, to the choice of ingredients.

Local food pairings

As part of your brewery tour in Cologne, you may have the chance to enjoy delicious local food pairings .

Kölsch beer is often served with traditional German foods like bratwurst and Halve Hahn with nutty cheeses.

Some breweries even offer lighter desserts such as apricot cake as a pairing option for Kölsch beer.

Unique beer tasting experiences

During your brewery tour in Cologne, you can look forward to tasting a variety of beers. That's because there's about 25 different types, produced by over a dozen breweries scattered across the city!

Your tour will usually offer you the chance to sample different Kölsch beer styles, so you can compare the flavors and appreciate the craft behind them.

Each brewery puts its own twist on Kölsch, resulting in subtle but intriguing differences in taste.

Some may lean towards a crisper and more refreshing profile, while others might offer a slightly maltier or hoppier character.

Exploring these nuances can be lots of fun, especially for those who enjoy the art of beer tasting!

Tips for a Successful Brewery Tour

Make reservations in advance.

As there are only 13 breweries in Cologne, demand for tour slots often exceed supply.

So it's important to make reservations in advance. By pre-booking your spot, you can guarantee availability and sometimes even secure a better deal!

Whether it's through prior reservation or making arrangements beforehand, confirming your spot ahead of time is essential.

This way, you won't have to worry about missing out on the experience and can focus on enjoying the unique beer tastings and learning about brewery history and processes.

So don't forget to reserve your spot early and get ready for an unforgettable brewery tour in Cologne.

Dress comfortably

For a successful brewery tour, it's important to dress comfortably. Brewery visits are generally laid-back and casual, so you'll want to wear clothes that allow you to move freely and enjoy the experience.

Choose casual dressing, like jeans or shorts, paired with a comfortable top.

Closed-toe shoes are recommended, as some breweries have safety guidelines that require them. For women, skip the heels and choose booties instead - they're trendy and still provide comfort while exploring the brewery.

Remember, the key is to be relaxed and ready to sip some delicious brews!

Pace yourself

During a brewery tour in Cologne, it's important to pace yourself. With so many delicious beers to try and interesting facts to learn about, it can be easy to get carried away.

Be aware of how much alcohol you're drinking. Even though the individual servings may be small, and Kölsch tends to taste light, they can add up, especially if you're trying multiple varieties.

Anyway, by taking your time and enjoying each tasting, you'll be able to fully appreciate the flavors and experience of the different brews.

So take small sips, engage in conversations with fellow beer enthusiasts, and soak up the atmosphere of each brewery stop along the way.

Bring a designated driver or use public transportation

If you're planning to go on a brewery tour in Cologne, it's important to think about how you'll get around safely.

If you have a car, it's best to bring a designated driver who can abstain from drinking and ensure everyone gets home safely.

Another option is to use public transportation, which is convenient and reliable in Cologne. Plus, if you get the KolnCard , public transportation is free in Cologne!

So whether you have a friend willing to be the designated driver or you rely on the city's efficient public transport system, make sure you have a plan in place so that everyone can fully enjoy the experience without worrying about getting home safely afterwards.

Why Cologne is Known for its Breweries

Cologne has a long and proud tradition of brewing beer, dating back centuries . The city's history of brewing can be traced to the Middle Ages when monasteries and local breweries produced beer for both local consumption and trade.

And it's particularly famous for a unique beer style called Kölsch.

This is a top-fermented, pale, and clear beer with a crisp, clean taste. It's served in small, cylindrical glasses and is known for its refreshing quality.

Locals are fiercely proud about their Kölsch. It has a protected status, which means that only beer brewed in and around Cologne can be called Kölsch.

This is partly why traditional breweries, known as "Brauhäuser" or brewpubs, play a significant role. These breweries often serve as gathering places for locals and tourists alike, offering not only beer but also traditional Cologne cuisine.

Brewing is not just a business in Cologne; it's part of the city's cultural identity and plays an important role in its heritage.

Conclusion: Top Cologne Brewery Tours

So, don't miss out on exploring the breweries in Cologne during your visit! Not only can you enjoy a range of beers, you'll also be taking part in a vibrant brewing culture that has been cherished for centuries.

Whether you choose the Brewery Tour with Three "Kölsch" Tastings or the Guided Brewhouse Walking Tour , you're in for a very special Cologne experience!

6 Best Beer Halls and Brauhaus Breweries in Cologne

by Art of Touring | Jun 20, 2022 | Cologne | 1 comment

cologne pub tour

Like many cities in Germany, Cologne residents are passionate about their beer. The local brew is called Kölsch, and it is beloved by the citizens of Cologne. You’ll find locals and tourists alike sipping down .2L glasses of Kölsch at one of the many brauhaus pubs around the city. Also known as brewhouses or beer halls, a German brauhaus is a traditional drinking establishment primarily offering locally brewed beer and German food.

With so many amazing beer hall options available in Cologne, visitors often ask: what is the best Cologne Brauhaus?

In this post, we sit down with Alex, one of our Cologne tour guides, to get a local’s perspective on where to find the best beer halls in Cologne. Alex leads a number of Art of Touring’s guided walking tours , including one of our most popular tours – the Kölsch Beer Tour .

From the outset, it should be said that each Cologne resident has their own firmly held opinions when it comes to Kölsch. This post summarizes Alex’s personal opinion on the best brauhauses, but if you speak to a different resident during your visit to Cologne, you’re likely to hear other suggestions. People here love to share their thoughts on all things Kölsch, brauhaus and beer!

In case you aren’t familiar with the beer you’ll be drinking at the beer halls in Cologne, Kölsch is a clear, light, and crisp lager that is typically served in small glasses. Perfect for drinking all year round, but especially on warm summer days. In order to be properly called a Kölsch, German regulations stipulate that the brewery must be within 30 miles of the Cologne Cathedral and must brew the beer according to the Reinheitsgebot, or German purity law. Kölsch is the only beer in Germany to have a special protected geographical status.

Peters Brauhaus

Cologne’s busy Old Town (Altstadt in German) is full of brauhauses, especially from well-known Kölsch brands like Früh and Gaffel. While these macro breweries are certainly fun and lively, they can get crowded with groups of tourists or rowdy families before a football match. For a more local brauhaus experience that feels off-the-beaten path, check out Peter’s Brauhaus. Located only a stone’s throw away from the Dom Cathedral, Peters achieves the best atmosphere of any brauhaus in central Cologne.

Peter’s Brewery is one of the smaller Kölsch producers in Cologne, so it can be more challenging to find their beer in a store or outside the brauhaus. Nonetheless, the Kölsch at Peter’s is smooth and crisp, always coming fresh from the tap. According to Alex, Peter’s Brauhaus is “Cologne’s best classic German Brauhaus”. Its popularity with locals is well earned! The drinking experience is backed by a quality food offer and friendlier than normal service. A word of warning: it can get incredibly busy, especially on the weekend, so booking in advance is advised.

Brauerei Päffgen

Many of the Kölsch breweries in Cologne have moved their brewing operations outside of the city center to warehouses or suburban locations. Not at Brauerei Päffgen though! Päffgen still brews in the same original location as when the brewery started in 1883. Founded by the current owner’s grandfather and great-grandfather, Päffgen is the oldest house brewery in Cologne.

Along with its interesting history, Päffgen is one of Alex’s favorite brands of Kölsch. The wooden beer barrels are taken directly from the brewery’s cold storage to the tavern with the help of a small pulley. That means, the beer comes straight from the aging barrel to your table without utilizing any carbonic acid or other additives in the Kölsch. It is one of the purest Kölsch beers you can find!

The tucked away location and lack of expensive marketing campaigns means that Päffgen isn’t touristy. This is a local secret! The design of the brauhaus is unique with an open-air courtyard out back which looks into the brewery itself. Visitors might notice customers taking advantage of the brewery’s “take away” service. Locals will come into the brewery to collect the beer in barrels, which is the only way Päffgen sells its beer outside of the brauhaus. There are no bottles in sight!

Haus Unklebach

With a massive patio in front of the brauhaus, Haus Unklebach is in the running to be Cologne’s best outdoor drinking experience. The beer garden is set back from the street and decorated with bright red and white flowers, Cologne’s city colors. Serving Reissdorf, a good solid Kölsch, the atmosphere and ambiance at Haus Unkelbach is always really fun and lively.

It is beloved by the neighborhood residents and you’ll always see groups of friends meeting or families gathering. Haus Unklebach also has great food. The menu features German classics prepared with high quality ingredients. Alex recommends the onion soup. It is a heavy dish, laden with cheese and cheese-covered croutons, but he says “it is really tasty and comforting”.

Haus Unklebach is also known for having the best Karnival party of any Brauhaus in Cologne. On Karneval days, you can get there at 9.00am and there will already be a massive queue waiting for the doors to open at 11.00am. A stage is built in the beer garden and some of Cologne’s best bands are invited to entertain the crowd. “It is a really special experience”, says Alex.

Brauerei zur Malzmühle

Along with Päffgen mentioned above, Malzmühle is one of the only two breweries which continues to produce beer in the old city of Cologne. It is the second oldest brewery in Cologne, with its brauhaus still sitting in the original brewery location just south of Heumarkt Square. The Brauerei zur Malzmühle opened over 160 years ago. It remains a genuine family brewery, managed today by the fifth generation of the Schwartz family.

Although Malzmühle can be a little bit loud with visitors, the quality of the beer makes a stop at this brauhaus well worth it. Alex believes that Brauerei zur Malzmühle is in the running to be the best Kölsch in Cologne! Malzmühle also offers a range of beers alongside their standard Kölsch, including a Malt beer – a sweet beer with 2.5% Alcohol which tastes really good. Along with the beer, there is great “Cologne Tapas” plate which includes classic snack dishes native to Cologne, including Leberwurst (liver sausage), Mettwurst (raw ground pork), delicious Frikadeller (meatballs), and traditional Blutwurst (black pudding).

Haus Töller

Southwest of Cologne’s city center near Barbarossaplatz lies Haus Töller. This establishment is a Cologne institution with a very long history. It is now in its 6th generation, and the building itself survived the war – a rarity in Cologne.  The Haus Töller Brauhaus sells one of Alex’s favored Kölsch brands, Päffgen Kölsch. He says, “the pub itself is also brilliant”.

What’s more, the waiters (known as Körbes) are really passionate about their beer and the culture which surrounds it. You can feel the Cologne spirit in a place like Haus Töller. Alex’s recalls a time when a Körbes offered to show his group around the brauhaus after hours. Once all of the other patrons left, the waiter took the time to describe the architecture and historical artifacts found around the beer hall. This unique experience really brought the history to life!

This Cologne institution is usually closed for one or two months in the summer. Check the website for availability before your visit.

Johann Schäfer

If you’re looking for a break from Kölsch beer but still want a brauhaus experience in Cologne, check out Johann Schäfer. This micro brewery in Cologne’s Südstadt neighborhood offers a varying selection of beer, including a house brewed Pils and Hell, alongside a selection of Kölsch. Alex loves going to this brauhaus for something different, adding that it is a good “alternative beer experience for people visiting Cologne.”

The building in which the brauhaus is located has a long connection to the family of the brewery’s founder – Manfred Schäfer. His great grandfather ran a blacksmith shop in the same hall where the brewery is today. If you look closely, you will still find large metal rings embedded in the old masonry wall where the horses were tied while shoes were adhered to their hooves.

The brauhaus has a buzzy atmosphere of young people and locals, found well outside the normal Cologne beer hall circuit. Additionally, the food at Johann Schäfer is absolutely delicious. Their motto is to “have fun eating” which you certainly will when you enjoy their regionally and seasonally inspired cuisine. If you’re looking for a more alfresco drinking and eating experience in Cologne, Johann Schäfer has a second location on the Rhine River. It is one of Cologne’s best beer gardens!

Cologne Brewery Tour | A Guide to Cologne Kolsch (incl. map!)

Planning a trip to Cologne ? No tour of Köln (as it’s known in Germany) is complete without a Cologne Brewery Tour . On it you will experience a traditional Köln brauhaus and down a glass of kölsch beer (or beers!) at iconic breweries like Früh am Dom in the old town. Luckily, since we spent 2 years living in the city and undoubtedly drank quite a lot of the golden stuff (you’re welcome!), we have the lowdown on the best Köln brauhaus beer tour. Which as a bonus you can do as a walking tour. What a great way to see the city!

What are the must visit spots on your Cologne Brewery Tour?

These are definitely the top breweries that you must include on your brewery tour when in Cologne!

Brauhaus Sion

Früh am dom, gaffel am dom, peter’s brauhaus, do you need a guide for a brewery tour.

Even though you don’t need much German to order a beer and if you follow the map and itinerary we’ve put together it’s a relatively simple tour to do.

However, to get the best expereince on a brewery tour it’s well worth looking into the beer tour that Get your Guide has – it’s a really highly-rated.

About Köln Brauhäuser

There’s more to Cologne than the towering Cologne cathedral and the breweries (Brauhäuser or brew house) are dotted across the compact city centre. Many of the breweries opened their doors to the public in the early 19 th century and, while they have evolved into some of the best bars in Cologne, they haven’t lost their traditional charm.

What’s great about them is that they are all located in a 2 kilometre radius, making it easy to visit (and stumble) between them. We often think of going between them as one of the best walking tours of Cologne. But do make sure you make a full day of your tour, as hoping between these brauhaus is not going to be a short affair. Maybe set aside 5 hrs for the duration of the tour…

If you do want to visit more sights, you could always read our One Day in Cologne City Guide. Where we recommend what else to do in the city, some great restaurants to try and a great hotel or two.

About Köbes

The blue-jacketed waiters of the brauhaus are a unique sight in Germany. Dressed in a traditional uniform and usually carrying a full ‘crown’, which is a round tray with many slots for beer glasses, the köbes bring the atmosphere to the room. That said, they can sometimes be a little ‘rude’ – take this as the German directness rather than being impolite!

cologne pub tour

About Kolsch

Ask any Cologne resident and they’ll tell you very proudly that kölsch beer is the world’s best type of beer. But kölsch beer doesn’t only refer to the golden nectar itself (found only in Cologne) but “kolsch style”, the culture of Cologne, and is tied up in the city. The beer is served in a slightly odd beer glass type , a small yet tall kolsch glass called a “stange” which holds only 200ml of beer. This means the beer is always fresh and drinking it is quick – so watch your speed! Since the beer is specially fermented it contains less sugar and malt than other beer, so it’s quite light to drink.

Kolsch cuisine

Like most German fare, Cologne brewery food is pretty hearty and portions are heavy – so go hungry! Famous dishes include Himmel un Äd (heaven and earth) – a dish of liver sausage with mashed potatoes and apple sauce, Halve Hahn – half a rye bread roll with mature cheese and mustard and our ultimate favourite, Schweinhaxe; essentially a roasted pork knuckle served with mash and sauerkraut.

Your Cologne brewery tour map

Read on for more about each of the Köln brauhaus highlights, or use this map to plan your journey!

The oldest brauhaus in Cologne,  Sion first brewed in 1318. The kolsch brewery was unfortunately completed destroyed in the Second World War but was rebuilt on its original spot. It hosts a lot of fun events so try to check their calendar before you head over!

Location:  Unter Taschenmacher 5-7, 50667 Cologne

Opening hours: 11.30am to midnight

The most famous of all the brauhaus spots, the Fruh brewery in Cologne near the Cathedral is more than 100 years old. The kolsch beer is not brewed onsite but it’s still delicious! Früh am dom is a huge brewery and offers different rooms for your taste – the main restaurant, the belfry (a newer addition), the conservatory, the sauna (named for its lack of windows) and the “Wappensaal”, our favourite room.

cologne pub tour

Location: Am Hof 12-18, 50667 Cologne

Opening hours: 11.30 am to midnight (weekdays) 9:00 am to midnight (weekends)

Once visited by former US president, Bill Clinton, the Brauerei zur Malzmühle is another established brewery, located in the Heumarkt area. This is a genuine family brewery, run by the fifth generation of local family, Schwartz, and the kolsch beer is brewed on the premises so it has an authentic feel.

Location: Heumarkt 6, 50667 Cologne

Opening hours: 11.30 am to midnight (Mon – Thurs) 11.30 am to 1.30 am (Fri & Sat) and 11.30 am – 11.00 pm (Sun)

Like its counterparts, Fruh and Sion, Gaffel am Dom is one of the largest names in the Köln brauhaus scene and has also successfully commercialised its kolsch beer, which is found in supermarkets across the country. It’s a lively pub with typical pub food on offer.

cologne pub tour

Location: Bahnhofsvorpl. 1, 50667 Cologne

Opening hours: 11.00 am to midnight (Sun – Thurs) 11.00 am to 2.00 am (Fri & Sat)

This is our absolute favourite brewery in the entire city of Cologne and definitely one not to be missed. We love Peter’s Brauhaus because of the atmosphere, the varied local menu but mainly because we believe it’s the best kolsch available in the city surrounds!

Tip: The Brewhouse Plate is a good lunch option since it offers two small pork schnitzels with fried bacon potatoes and a side salad. Plenty to line the stomach!!

Peters Brauhaus, Köln

Location: Mühlengasse 1, 50667 Cologne

Opening hours: 11.00 am to midnight (Sun – Thurs) 11.00 am to 12.30 am (Fri & Sat)

A few more breweries that are further afield, but worth the walk:

  • Bei d`r Tant (At my Aunts): Cäcilienstraße 28, 50667 Cologne
  • Em Krützche (At the wayside shrine): Am Frankenturm 1-3, 50667 Cologne
  • Brauhaus Päffgen: Friesenstraße 64-66, 50670 Köln
  • Brauhaus Gilden: Clevischer Ring 121, 51063 Cologne

Drinking up the atmosphere: Cologne’s best brewery pubs

Brewing really good beer is a art. Centuries-old breweries have helped kölsch attain a worldwide reputation. You can still find it there in original settings but some of the younger breweries serve outstanding, innovative beers too.

Johann Schäfer – a historical pub with modern cuisine

The Johann Schäfer brewery pub oozes history. 100 years ago, horses were brought here to have their hooves shod; later it was home to a haulage firm. Now they brew an excellent pils, Südstadt-Pils , here. Guests can also enjoy modern seasonal cuisine , expertly prepared using regional ingredients and with plenty of options for vegans.

Elsaßstraße 6, 50677 Cologne

Brauhaus Pütz – keeping it in the family

cologne pub tour

Authentic Mühlen-Kölsch is still brewed to an old family recipe . At Brauhaus Pütz , they serve it from the tapping area, which is situated in the middle of the pub so patrons can watch the köbe s (Rhineland breweries’ special brand of waiter) in action as they fill up the glasses.

Engelbertstraße 67, 50674 Cologne

Brauhaus Päffgen – hand-crafted beer and Cologne cuisine

Brauhaus Päffgen

Cologne’s oldest craft brewery still resides at its original address at 64 Friesengasse – 125 years after it was founded. Contrary to modern convention, Päffgen still brew their beer by hand and you can savour the results at their brewery pub, where they also serve local specialities. The beer garden is popular in the warm weather and is fitted with a retractable roof, turning it into a “winter garden” in the colder months.

Friesenstraße 64-66, 50670 Cologne

Braustelle – small on size, big on creativity

Braustelle

Cologne’s tiniest brewery is in the colourful Ehrenfeld district. At Braustelle , they’ve been producing innovative craft beers like Pink Panther (a mildly hopped ale with hibiscus flowers) or Schwarze Sieben (a bitter, black stout containing lashings of roasted malt) since 2001. The food menu offers German classics such as knödel dumplings and frikadelle burgers as well as lighter dishes like avocado wraps and salads.

Christianstraße 2, 50825 Cologne

Hellers – great beer in green surroundings, whatever the season

Hellers Brauhaus

At Brauhaus Hellers in the heart of Cologne’s popular Kwartier Latäng neighbourhood, the beer is certified organic. For a large dose of gemutlichkeit , grab a table in the “winter garden”. It’s full of lush greenery all year round and has a small fountain burbling away in the background. In the warmer weather, kölsch enthusiasts can enjoy a glass of their favourite tipple coupled with lake views at the Hellers beer garden in the city’s Volksgarten park.

Hellers Brauhaus: Roonstr. 33, 50674 Cologne Hellers Volksgarten: Volksgartenstrasse 27, 50677 Cologne

Brauhaus Früh – a brew with a view

Brauhaus Früh am Dom

Where’s the best place to enjoy a good kölsch ? Where there’s a view of the cathedral, obviously! That’s why Brauhaus Früh was established right opposite the majestic landmark back in 1904. In the cellar with its medieval vaulted ceiling , on the first floor overlooking the Heinzelmännchen fountain and beer garden or, in the summer, from the roofed courtyard terrace – wherever you sit, if you appreciate great kölsch , you’ll feel right at home here.

Am Hof 12-18, 50667 Cologne

Peters Brauhaus – friendly, cheerful and delicious

Peters Brauhaus

The first brewery at 1 Mühlengasse opened back in the 16th century. The building, known as Brügelmannhaus , saw a lot over the years before becoming Peters Brauhaus in 1994. Peters ‘ slogan consists of three simple words: Freundlich. Fröhlich. Lecker. (friendly, cheerful and delicious). Their menu features traditional Cologne dishes along with vegetarian and vegan options plus, needless to say, home-brewed Peters kölsch .

14 Best Cologne Tours

With more than 2,000 years of history, it’s no wonder the German city of Cologne is known as a cultural hub in both Germany and all of Europe.

Cologne’s location along the Rhine River, combined with medieval architecture, including the iconic Cologne Cathedral, makes the city appealing to the eye.

A beautiful riverside district and historic Old Town area are just the beginning. The city is home to dozens of museums, hundreds of art galleries, and one of the oldest and biggest universities on the continent.

With a population of just over one million people, Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany. The city’s residents are known for their upbeat, live-in-the-moment lifestyle. Cologne has more pubs than any other city in the country.

A number of festivals also take place in Cologne throughout the year, including The Cologne Carnival, Ringfest, and the Christmas Market.

Below are 14 of the best tours in Cologne.

1. Tour Cologne with a Local

Cologne, Germany

The second best way to get familiar with any city is to leave the confines of your hotel and explore on your own. The top way to get familiar with a new city is to explore with someone who lives there and has all the insider tips and tricks to get around more easily; they will know the best places to eat, drink, and experience the history and culture.

Meet your local guide at your hotel and start your walking tour with an introduction to your immediate surroundings. Share your interests with your guide so they’re able to customize the tour to suit you.

Spend the next several hours seeing top attractions and hearing about the history of the city and what it’s like to live there. End the tour feeling confident that you have all the information to make your stay in Cologne the best it can be.

2. Take a Virtual trip Back in Time

cologne pub tour

While you won’t actually travel back in time at TimeRide Cologne, this virtual reality experience is the closest thing to it.

Don a pair of VR glasses and get ready to be taken back to the earlier part of the 20th century to see Cologne how it was then.

For 45 minutes, you’ll take a ride through Old Town and see an accurate depiction of the city in the year 1900, tram and lively street scenes included.

Visit a cinema where you’ll watch a short movie about Cologne’s past and present and see 3D pictures of iconic landmarks.

'Jeremy Clarkson's pub is the highlight of our holiday'

cologne pub tour

Nestled in the picturesque Oxfordshire countryside, there are a huge number of historical pubs to enjoy a quiet pint. But only one of them had hundreds of people flocking to it from all over the country on Friday.

Jeremy Clarkson's latest venture already seems to be a huge success - so what is it like at The Farmer's Dog and why are so many people excited?

The Cotswolds have long been a destination in their own right, but visitors travelled from near and far for the chance to experience Jeremy Clarkson’s newest business.

Hundreds of cars, lined bumper-to-bumper as they were directed into an Oxfordshire field, filled with tourists hailing from Newcastle, Essex, the Channel Islands and beyond.

Many of them were lured to Oxfordshire after watching Prime Video's reality show Clarkson's Farm, eager to discover what the former Top Gear presenter had in store for them in Asthall.

'It’s become a bit of a social phenomenon'

A blonde woman is smiling standing next to her male partner, who is also smiling.

The bright sunshine certainly helped bring out the crowds on the opening day. Coming off the A40, the roof and stone walls were already peeking out of the trees.

It was only when directly outside that scale of the operation became apparent. The queue to get into the bar snaked around the pub, giving those waiting plenty of time to take in the rolling Oxfordshire hills and Windrush Valley.

In the line there were plenty of people eager to get their fill of all things Clarkson. This was the second attraction of the day for holidaymakers Kirsty and Steve from Brighton, having already visited the Diddly Squat Farm Shop, about 10 miles away, first thing.

They travelled to area as they’re "obsessed" with the series: “We binged all three seasons in a few weeks, and we decided we wanted to visit.”

Further along the line were Hannah and her partner. For them, the visit was a celebration, as Hannah had just finished a week of radiotherapy treatment at the Churchill Hospital in nearby Oxford.

She said: “We just thought we’d come and treat ourselves and see Jeremy and the gang.”

Toby was travelling home to Essex from the Forest of Dean with his family and they wanted to pop in en route.

He said he was “curious” and thought the whole thing has “become a bit of a social phenomenon".

One of the key reasons he likes the Clarkson’s Farm programme is because he feels it is “educating people on how farming actually works”.

A man who is a metal sculptor stands in his workshop in front of a metal sculpture of a tree that he has made as a gift for Jeremy Clarkson and his partner Lisa.

Fans of the first Jeremy Clarkson show on Prime - The Grand Tour - will see a regular sight with that shows tent now a marquee in the garden.

Just next door, metal sculptor Christopher Townsend watched from his workshop as hundreds of cars streamed into the overflow car park.

“This is usually quite a quiet spot,” he said, “just me, my two neighbours and the occasional farmer popping in for a cup of tea, so it’s all a bit different.”

He’s positive about the change and said he welcomed Jeremy Clarkson and his TV production crew in his workshop over the summer, as the pub was being renovated.

His celebrity neighbours have even inspired Christopher creatively, as he’s forged them a metal sculpture called ‘The Farmer’s Tree’, with names of the show’s stars - including animals - etched into its leaves. He plans to gift it to them soon.

He hopes the crowds flocking to the pub may help his own business, but does have longer-term concerns about parking, which was an issue at Diddly Squat Farm Shop.

“It seems like because of Diddly Squat they’ve done the homework, but who knows.”

‘Everybody’s talking about it’

A man who is a local resident is standing in his village of Minster Lovell.

In the nearby village of Minster Lovell, it was hard to find people who weren’t enthusiastic about the pub’s opening.

“Everyone seems to like the idea”, said musician Des. “It’s just good there’s another venue open, there’s so many pubs that have closed down.”

“Good luck to the bloke”, said villager Adrian. He felt the pub would be a positive addition to the local area and could be “a bit of business for the local farmers”.

Online, some residents have expressed concerns about potential traffic problems for the area, as the pub is located on the busy A40 road.

One Facebook user said: "I do worry about traffic though. I popped by the farm shop at the weekend. It was utter chaos."

Another wrote: "Might need three lanes on the A40 for the queuing cars and parked cars."

For the pub's inaugural day however, visitors had little criticism. Many praised the organisation, with event staff deployed to direct cars into a large overflow carpark.

Ahead of the opening, Mr Clarkson posted on X (formerly Twitter) spelling out his thanks to Oxfordshire County Council for their help with traffic and parking, which allowed him to open the pub so soon after buying it.

Since migrating from entertaining petrolheads to showing the world the troubles faced by British farmers, millions have seen a different side to Clarkson, who has been long renowned for his outspoken persona and controversies, such as comments about Meghan Markle or being dropped from Top Gear .

On Clarkson's Farm, he has shown an interest in doing what he can to make his holding ecologically sound and was visibly upset when piglets were inadvertently killed by their mother.

But despite the success of the show, running the farm has been anything but a simple endeavour.

There have been well documented disputes with West Oxfordshire District Council over his development of a farm shop, a short-lived restaurant on the site and the car park saga .

Two people opposed to some of the developments even received death threats .

There of course have been the more standard farm-related problems too, such as razor thin margins, the impact of terrible weather on crops and the difficulties of dealing with livestock.

PA Media Jeremy Clarkson stands outside his new pub surrounded by crowds.

Despite the problems though, Clarkson's Farm has been praised for showing the public the reality of British farming.

"The show has made people more aware of what farmers go through," Andy Barr, a pig farmer , previously told the BBC.

"A lot of it I think is true. It shows a lot of the stress."

Mr Clarkson has even found himself credited as the reason for a huge rise in membership of Norfolk Federation of Young Farmers, such is the appeal of the programme.

The opening of The Farmer's Dog may make a fascinating chapter on Clarkson's Farm on Prime Video but as many publicans up and down the UK will testify, the pub trade has become a notoriously difficult one in recent years.

Jeremy Clarkson himself has already noted the challenges ahead, not least as he intends to only serve food and drink from Britain in the pub.

Admitting he "hasn't made a business plan" he claimed it is more expensive to sell pork from his own pigs in the pub than it is to buy from abroad.

However, a video posted by Mr Clarkson to 8m Instagram followers showed a busy bar with plenty of people queuing for drinks, with pints starting at £5.50.

A steady stream of visitors lined the paths leading to The Farmer’s Dog throughout the day.

When they returned to their cars, many had arms full of Clarkson products.
