How often is your data updated?

Our team is notified of all policy changes every hour—an average of 55 changes per hour—and then manually confirms and curates the required updates.

How do you classify the levels of restrictions on the map?

The map is divided into four levels of restrictions to help travellers find destinations that have few restrictions or to determine restrictions for a specific destination. Travel is open: Open for travel. COVID-19 testing or quarantine is not required Test & travel: Open for travel with required COVID-19 testing. Test & quarantine: Open for travel with required COVID-19 testing and quarantine. Entry is restricted: Travel is open for returning citizens and those meeting strict requirements.

Can travellers see restrictions by destination and by return route?

Users can quickly switch between departure and return restrictions to get the full picture of what’s required.

Are entry restrictions based on nationality or point of origin?

As travel begins to resume, restrictions are often based on a traveller's point of origin instead of their nationality.

An interactive map shows where you can travel right now depending on your location and vaccination status

  • As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues, people want to know where they can travel right now.
  • A new map from Sherpa shows where you can travel based on your destination and vaccination status.
  • Travelers can enter their departure and arrival locations to see what restrictions apply to them.

Insider Today

As more people around the world receive the COVID-19 vaccine , and with travel restrictions constantly shifting, many are wondering where they can travel right now.

To help travelers figure out where they can and can't travel, travel company Sherpa created an interactive map tool that shows travelers where they can go based on their departure location and vaccination status.

How to use Sherpa's interactive map

Travelers can use Sherpa's map in several different ways.

To view travel restrictions by country, users can hover over a country on the map. This prompts a pop-up box with an overview of the country's current policies for inbound travelers.

For easy reference, countries are color-coded according to the number and type of restrictions they have in place, ranging from "travel is open" to "entry is restricted."

Travelers can also hide certain destinations on the map based on their restrictions levels by clicking on the "Filters" box in the top right-hand corner and selecting specific restriction levels.

To check restrictions for a specific trip, users can select their departure and arrival destinations in the top left-hand corner.

After entering in departure and arrival destinations, a pop-up box appears detailing travel restrictions, documents you must have for your trip, as well as details and exemptions, like having to pass a temperature screening at the airport or wear face masks in public. Sherpa also links out to official government websites and forms.

For example, if you're looking to visit Barbados from the United States before May 8, the map shows that you will need to quarantine for five days upon arrival at an approved hotel or villa. It links out to an update from Visit Barbados detailing changes that will take place after May 8.

You can use Sherpa's interactive map on its website.

Goodbye restrictions, hello requirements

As the world continues to open up to more international travel, we think the time is right to update some language in our product. we want users to share our belief that travel is something to be enjoyed again—not something that’s inherently restricted. that’s why we’re removing the word “restrictions” from our product, and replacing it with “requirements”..

Sherpa° was founded to inform travellers about eVisas and to streamline the process of getting one. When COVID-19 took hold around the world, we pivoted to providing our airline and travel company partners with information on COVID-19 restrictions. At the time, travel was unarguably restricted—new travel restrictions were placed on practically every one of the world’s travel corridors. In many cases, travel was simply not permitted.

Of course, this remains the case on many corridors today. But for much of the world, travel is now a possibility for anyone that has the means to travel. On certain routes, travellers still need to comply with certain requirements, such as proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test result. And the world’s governments continue to introduce new eVisa and Electronic Travel Authorization requirements, such as ETIAS and the UK eTA .

As our product evolves, we want to introduce new categories of information to our search results that make it even easier for travellers to cross borders, such as non-COVID-19 vaccination requirements and passport validity requirements.

Travel has changed, but thankfully it’s making a strong comeback. So it’s goodbye to restrictions, and hello to requirements. Partners and users can expect to see this new language updated in our product from the end of June 2022.

At sherpa° we’re passionate about freedom of movement. Our mission is to help travelers move freely around the world and to shift the way the world's leading travel providers approach border crossings. Through unmatched industry knowledge and expertise, we help our partners—from airlines to cruise lines to online travel agencies—open new ancillary revenue streams to help them reduce costs and operational risk while enhancing the customer journey and growing consumer confidence in travel.

More than simply providing a product or service, we're moving travel forward. Away from stress and confusion, and towards ease and connection. So travelers can move freely wherever life takes them. This is the future of international travel. Contact us today to find out how our suite of solutions can help grow your business.

How To Travel With Your Pet Responsibly

A s recently as a decade or so ago, I feel like it was the norm for people to kennel their pets or, ideally, find a petsitter when they went away on vacation. Nowadays, I see Instagram reels of adventuresome cats hiking the backcountry with their owners unabashedly. And, hotels are increasingly adopting a “pets welcome” policy, so no one looks at me funny when I say I want to bring my dogs along on a trip.

While my animal cohorts and I might stick to the car simply for the sake of ease, plenty of people are flying with their fur friends, or bringing them aboard trains and (in rare instances) boats. And, although inviting along your four-legged family members can greatly enrich your trip, it also involves careful consideration, thorough preparation and overall great responsibility for each stage of the journey.

We’ve looked at studies and questioned pet experts to help illuminate some of the most common and complex issues that come with the decision to include a pet in your travel party—whether that’s camping during a domestic road trip or flying across international borders. After all, your animal companion’s health and happiness are just as important as the major logistical factors you’ll face during the trip-planning process.

Pre-Trip Health Checks

On a very basic level, you should schedule a visit to your veterinarian before hitting the road or taking flight, just to ensure that they are healthy and current on their core vaccines. Depending upon the hazards that are present in your destination, you may wish to consider other inoculations, such as Leptospirosis, Lyme, Canine Influenza Virus Rattlesnake vaccines, says Nicole Savageau, a distinguished veterinarian with the national, in-home service,  The Vets . You should also consistently administer any preventive medications, such as those for flea, tick and heartworm (transmitted by mosquito bite) prevention.

Be sure to carry your pets’ documentation, including vaccination records and medical history, with you during your trip. It’s also wise to research 24-hour emergency animal hospitals at your destination and have the information at the ready, because medical emergencies always seem to strike at the most inopportune times and, if something does happen, it’s difficult to remain clear-headed at that moment.

You can find listings of Veterinarians & Pet Emergency Hospitals in the United Stateson the American Animal Hospital Association website . With the rest of your pet’s paperwork, be sure to keep the National Animal Poison Control’s number (888-426-4435) handy, in case your pet should ingest something potentially toxic.

Booking Pet Travel

If you’re flying, you’ll need to make an airline reservation for your four-legged friend when you make one for yourself, since only a limited number of pets can be transported per flight. According to Gayle Martz, CEO and President of the  Sherpa Pet Trading Company , and creator of the award-winning airline-approved "Sherpa" soft-sided pet carrier, you should also do your research to determine whether there are any special restrictions for pets that are flying in the passenger cabin.

Just as important as contacting your airline or rail provider about their pet-related requirements and restrictions is reaching out to your intended accommodations—hotel, vacation rental property or campsite—about their pet policies. While plenty are billed as pet-friendly, there are varying degrees of pet-friendliness.

Many will have breed or weight restrictions, or charge additional fees or deposits for guests who plan on bringing their animal companions along during their stay. Some properties go out of their way to make pets welcome, with special amenities, menus, etc. available that cater specially to furry family members.

Pet Travel Requirements

What requirements need to be fulfilled for companion animals to travel across state borders or internationally? Such prerequisites are set by the destinations to which you’re traveling, but sometimes airlines have their own requirements that must be met, so be sure to check with your carrier, as well. When it comes to meeting such conditions, pet parents should realize that preparation (often well in advance) and proper timing is of the essence.

Why? Because a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“health certificate”) which must be obtained from and signed by a federally accredited veterinarian, are only valid for a certain amount of time. Again, this largely depends upon your destination’s requirements, but the window is typically within 10 days of border crossing. You may also need additional documentation from your veterinarian attesting that your pet is up-to-date on required vaccinations.

USDA endorsement of the certificate can also be a provision for international travel. For more in-depth information on this subject, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) resources on  Animal Travel and Transport, and  Basic Timeline for Interstate and International Travel with Animals .

Note that the state of Hawaii and many foreign countries also have quarantine requirements for animals, meaning you’ll be separated from your pet and they will be kept in isolation for a pre-determined period. This can be an important consideration when it comes to deciding whether or not to bring a pet along on your trip. For information about the various pet travel requirements of your destination country, you should contact the Consulate or Embassy in that country and learn about their regulations.

Proper Identification

It happens. Animals panic and escape from their carriers or handlers. In unfamiliar surroundings, they have no way of making their way back to their owners after they recover from whatever may have spooked them. Making sure that your pet travels in a secure, airline-approved carrier when flying, or remains on a leash while they’re out and about is a fundamental part of ensuring their safety. Even so, they should be wearing up-to-date ID and licensing tags, and really should be microchipped, as well.

When it comes to microchipping, the steps aren’t necessarily straightforward, so make sure that you’re getting the right sort implanted and—this is critical, but frequently overlooked—register the chip number using your current contact information. Without this step, a microchip is useless because it doesn’t work as a GPS locator as many owners seem to believe. The chip itself only transmits a unique number, detectable by a special scanner, and only once it is entered into a database and registered to the owner’s information does it become useful. If you’ve adopted a previously owned pet, contact the microchip company to re-register the chip with your information. Old and outdated owner contact information is equally useless.

It's also important to pay attention to the type of microchip you’re having implanted. The usual kind that are used in the U.S. may not help you if your pet get lost abroad. In fact, some countries will require that pets receive an International Standards Organization (ISO)-certified microchip just to enter their borders. Luckily, these days, many of the biggest pet microchip manufacturing companies are ensuring that their products are ISO-certified, and can therefore be scanned and recognized in other nations.

Prioritize Your Pet's Wellbeing

Bringing your fur baby along on a getaway won’t be much fun for anyone if they are stressed out, and physically, mentally or emotionally off-kilter. Besides considering their basic health and safety, you’ll need to plan ahead to ensure their broader wellbeing by bringing along the things they need to feel safe and comfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.

First, says Martz, you can prepare your pet for being in their carrier well ahead of your trip by getting them comfortable around it. “At the very least, get the carrier a month before your trip, and work with your pet on creating a pleasant experience for them when they are in the carrier. Plan a few easy, short trips with them traveling in the carrier to places like a dog park so they get excited to go into the carrier.” You’ll be surprised to see how, once acclimated, they take to the enclosed space. Once established as a safe space, dogs tend to view it as their “den”, an instinctual throwback that hearkens back to their wolf ancestors.

This is especially important if you are traveling by air, Martz points out, “The best pet onboard is one that no one knows is there. The pet must remain underneath the seat for the duration of the flight, so it is important that they are comfortable in their carrier.”

You’ll also want to bring treats, toys (not the squeaky variety, or you’ll annoy fellow passengers), a portable water bottle and collapsible water bowl, as well as a small blanket or item of clothing that smells like you or their home environment. Dogs’ and cats’ sense of smell is far more dominant in their perceptions of the world than ours, and this will help your pet feel more at ease.

Martz also advises that you prepare for potential accidents (potty emergencies or motion sickness) by bringing extra towels and ensuring that your pet’s carrier has an absorbent liner. You can line the bottom with disposable potty pads made to absorb urine and lined with a waterproof plastic film or opt for a washable variety. She also recommends, “Avoid feeding your dog a large meal within six hours of traveling to reduce the chances of motion sickness.”

A final piece of advice applies to human-animal interactions is any given situation, whether you’re at home, strolling the neighborhood or off on vacation. “It is important to remain calm,” Martz says, whatever circumstances you find yourself facing. “Pets are sensitive to their owner's emotions. Staying calm and relaxed can help reduce your pet's stress levels.”

Visiting Europe, Biden Will Find Both Solidarity and Isolation

The president arrived in France for a visit meant to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion and showcase Western unity. But even as he rallies American allies in defense of Ukraine, he will defy them on the war in Gaza.

President Biden in a suit and tie with a French official as others line up in front of him in tarmac.

By Michael D. Shear and Peter Baker

Michael D. Shear and Peter Baker are both in Paris covering President Biden’s trip.

As President Biden visits France this week, he will be rallying European leaders to his side and showcasing the resolve he has helped to foster on behalf of Ukraine.

But he will also be defying the very same leaders and standing virtually alone among Western democracies still firmly in support of Israel as it wages war in Gaza.

Mr. Biden arrived in Paris on Wednesday morning for a trip aimed at celebrating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. It is his first visit to Europe since the Oct. 7 terrorist attack led by Hamas, which killed 1,200 people in Israel and triggered a military retaliation that has killed about 36,000 people in Gaza. Next week he will return to Europe for a summit in Italy with the leaders of the Group of 7 nations, and three weeks after that he will host the 75th anniversary summit of NATO nations in Washington.

The series of meetings will put Mr. Biden in a position he has not experienced since becoming president: He will be embraced and isolated at the same time by the same group of allies he has courted for nearly four years. For a president who has emphasized his support for America’s traditional alliances, it represents a challenge that will test his diplomatic skills in unfamiliar ways.

“Gaza undermines the moral clarity of the argument they want to make about Ukraine,” said Peter Beinart, a professor of journalism and politics at the City University of New York and a longtime analyst of Middle East affairs who has been critical of Israel’s government. “The Gaza war makes that story a lot less compelling to a lot of people.”

Ivo Daalder, who was an ambassador to NATO under President Barack Obama, acknowledged the tension in Mr. Biden’s approach.

“Yes, it seems to be slightly contradictory to be making one argument on Russia and another argument on Israel,” said Mr. Daalder, who now serves as president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. “But the situations are different. One was attacked, and the other did the attacking. It’s pretty big.”

The European allies, with a couple of notable exceptions, have been strongly aligned with Washington for more than two years in the multinational campaign to defeat Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, broadly matching American investments in the war with their own commitments to Kyiv. But the Europeans have grown increasingly critical of how Israel is conducting its operation in Gaza over the past nine months, even as the Biden administration has rejected efforts by the chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court to seek arrest warrants for Israeli leaders on war crime charges.

The disparate priorities will play out at an event on Thursday meant to showcase Western unity and resolve. The D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944, will be celebrated as a high-water mark of the alliance that defeated Nazi Germany. President Emmanuel Macron of France will host leaders of the World War II partner countries, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, representing the two nations that joined the United States in staging the climactic amphibious invasion.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, representing the vanquished enemy, will also attend in a show of Europe’s reconciliation. Not present, however, will be President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, despite the Soviet Union’s alliance with the West during the war. Mr. Macron’s government initially invited lower-level Russian representatives to participate but rescinded the offer after objections stemming from Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine.

By contrast, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine will attend the ceremony, an opportunity for him to press Western leaders for more aid. White House officials said on Tuesday that Mr. Biden would meet with Mr. Zelensky while in France and then again during the G7 gathering in Italy.

John F. Kirby, a White House spokesman, said Mr. Biden knew that not every nation agrees with his policies. “Disagreements with allies and partners is not something new to President Biden,” Mr. Kirby said, “any more than unity and cooperation and collaboration, which he also fosters across a range of issues.”

The meetings between Mr. Biden and the allies come at a critical moment in both Europe and the Middle East. Ukraine is trying to fend off an escalating Russian offensive that threatens to break through its eastern defenses in a decisive way after two years of grinding combat. Hundreds of miles away, Israel and Hamas are both under pressure to agree to a cease-fire deal that could be the final chance for a path toward a more sustainable peace in the region.

Mr. Biden on Friday outlined such a cease-fire agreement that would eventually lead to the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a “permanent” end to the war. By advancing a deal that Europeans can support, the president may have found a way to minimize differences when he is in Paris.

The Group of 7 nations, including the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, issued a statement on Monday endorsing the deal that Mr. Biden outlined and calling on Hamas to accept it. Mr. Biden characterized the deal as a proposal put forward by Israel but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not explicitly endorsed or rejected it publicly as he navigates his own domestic politics and seeks advantage in any renewed negotiations with Hamas.

At the same time, Mr. Biden addressed another difficult issue before the trip by authorizing Ukraine for the first time to use U.S.-provided weapons against targets inside Russia for self-defense in limited circumstances, something France, Britain, Germany, Poland and other allies had already embraced .

“The only way out of such a dilemma is to push ahead on both problems — help Ukraine do better or win and get Israel on a path to peace,” said Dan Fried, a retired diplomat now at the Atlantic Council in Washington. “Hence the decision to lift some restrictions on Ukraine’s use of U.S. arms and to push a complex and ambitious peace plan” in Gaza.

Still, the differences remain real and stark. Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized an independent Palestinian state last week, just days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. Most European governments have endorsed the war crimes action against Israel at the International Criminal Court. “France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations,” the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement .

France has not acted to recognize a Palestinian state but did vote in the United Nations in May to support including Palestine as a full member of the organization. Britain, which is no longer a part of the European Union, abstained from that vote.

Critics of Mr. Biden said he has no one to blame for his diplomatic challenges in Europe but himself for an inconsistent approach to international crises.

“The contradiction, I think, is in American policy,” said Peter Rough, the director of the Center on Europe and Eurasia at the Hudson Institute and a former aide to President George W. Bush. “In Ukraine, he’s backing Ukraine against the Russian-Iranian alliance, while in Gaza he is managing Israel, even limiting it, as it confronts an Iranian proxy.”

From the other side of the spectrum, some foreign policy veterans said Mr. Biden has brought troubles upon himself by being too supportive of Israel.

“I am not at all sure that Biden has made the right choices on Israel-Gaza, although I acknowledge that he’s in a tough spot, as is our country,” said Eric Rubin, a longtime U.S. diplomat and the former president of the American Foreign Service Association. “Israel has lost the sympathy of most other countries and their citizens, and we won’t see it get it back in our lifetimes, I fear.”

But at the end of the day, some diplomats said, France and the other allies ultimately defer to the United States when it comes to such issues. And even though he will find them on different pages, Mr. Biden enjoys a constructive relationship with his peers, unlike his predecessor, and possible successor, Donald J. Trump, who berated European allies over their disagreements and left them dreading his potential return to office.

“The United States still plays the indispensable role,” said Mr. Daalder. “Everybody is looking to us to figure out how do we deal with Russia, how do we deal with China, and frankly even how do we deal with Israel. We’re still looked at by our friends and by our adversaries as the ones who will determine the outcome.”
